New Norton betas include the ability to rate a download's stability based on the file behavior on the computers of other Norton users and full Google Chrome support, setting the tone for the premium security suite updates due later this year.Released today by Symantec, Norton Internet Security 2012 beta (download) and Norton AntiVirus 2012 beta (download) also include a new start-up manager that debuted earlier this year in Norton 360, changes to Symantec's SONAR technology, and a new autofix feature for curing installation woes quickly.Norton Internet Security 2012 beta makes minor changes to a strong product.(Credit:Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET)The changes are not ground-breaking, but do appear to be able to keep Norton on top of its game. The Chrome support is a long-request feature for the world's third-most popular browser, and extends Norton Safe Web toolbar features such as search result evaluation, link scanning, and Norton's ID Safe to Chrome users. The two engine changes in the Norton 2012 betas aren't exposed in any new interface modules, yet they are important. Insight 3.0, and its component Download Insight 2.0 feature, have been improved. As mentioned above, Download Insight now looks at downloaded files for security and stability. It won't stop you from downloading a file that's known to cause instability, but it will warn you and provide an option to stop the download. This is a fairly well-designed feature, and can tell the difference between operating systems. This means that if a file is known to be stable onWindows 7 but unstable on Windows XP, only Windows XP users will see the warning.Norton Internet Security 2012 beta offers more nuanced download ratings, and will warn you when a download is known to cause system instability.(Credit:Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET)Meanwhile, improvements in SONAR 4.0 include upgraded behavioral protection, which monitors running programs for suspicious behavior and will stop them if it detects any. One of the bigger changes in SONAR is that it now scores DLL file separately, allowing for more nuanced detection. There have been some interface tweaks in the betas, adding bright green to a formerly yellow-and-black interface. While not a major redesign, the green does serve to better highlight key features, such as your security status. Norton's online storage vault also catches up to the competition this year, integrating a cloud sync feature, and the Norton Power Eraser for last-ditch fixes has been integrated with the Norton bootable recovery tool, so you won't have to download them separately. While CNET Labs won't benchmark the Norton 2012 betas until the final versions are released, Symantec itself says that it is seeing substantial, double-digit benchmarking improvements over 2011's strong times.Let us know your thoughts on Norton's 2012 betas in the comments below.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)Since Apple has still not announced how manyiPad 2s it's sold since the device went on sale last Friday, analysts and onlookers alike have tried to scrap together numbers from line counts, anecdotal stock reports, and order numbers. That last part of the strategy may no longer work, however. Citing sources familiar with Apple's ordering system, Apple Insider reports that Apple has tweaked its Web ordering tools to randomize order numbers so that users can't figure out how many units the company has moved between two different points in time.During the first iPad launch, forum users on Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board shared Web order numbers with one another and put them into a spreadsheet, eventually discovering that they were in a specific order. Putting them in line and with time codes, the group was able to determine that Apple was selling around 25,000 per hour, well ahead of company's official announcement a day and a half later. Along with the randomization claim, Apple Insider says Apple's early opening at its retail stores yesterday to cope with long lines was actually using stock delivered the day before. That move, the blog's source says, was to keep mistakes from being made in the rush to get freshly-delivered iPad 2 units to buyers. So far analysts have estimated that on its first day of iPad 2 sales, Apple sold to frenzied buyers anywhere from half a million of the devices, all the way to 1 million, compared to the 300,000 it sold on the first day of sales for the first-generation iPad. Last year the company revealed its first day sales just two days after the device went on sale.

0 Vote(s)

A song written for a video game has won one of music&'s top awards, the Grammy, for the first time in history.Baba Yetu, which appeared in Sid Meier&'s Civilization IV, won the Grammy for best instrumental arrangement with an accompanying vocalist. The song was composed by Christopher Tin and also appears on Civilization IV&'s official trailer and music video. The song beat other songs like Imagine off The Imagine Project, a collection of jazz songs. The song is featured in Tin&'s debut album, Calling all Dawns. But it was originally scored and recorded as the official song for Civilization IV, one of Sid Meier&'s top-selling games. The Civilization series features some of the most well-known and highly rated real-time strategy games of all time. Civilization IV received a score of 94 out of 100 across 50 reviews according to Metacritic, a site that aggregates game, music and movie reviews. It&'s a feather the video game industry has been trying to put in its cap for a long time. Recent video games, such as Assassin&'s Creed 2 and Mass Effect, feature a more sophisticated set of composers and epic scores. For example, Clint Mansell, the composer of movies like Requiem for a Dream and Moon, is composing the score of Bioware&'s latest epic Mass Effect 3.But music from video games has, at best, quietly kept pace with its more widely known movie soundtrack brethren. Perhaps it&'s because game music has always had the stigma of being nothing more than chiptunes a4" songs designed to be played on weaker computers that often has a very choppy and techie feel to it. But those lines have been blurring since the game industry began attracting more widely known composers like Jesper Kyd, the mastermind behind the Assassin&'s Creed soundtrack, and Nobuo Uematsu, music composer for the Final Fantasy series.Since then, game soundtracks have grown in popularity. Most video game soundtracks are available for download on iTunes and other online music stores. There&'s even a touring orchestral concert designed specifically for video game music called Video Games Live. Many gaming conventions, like Penny Arcade Expo, also feature live performances of video game tracks.Chalk up another big win for the video game industry. While the industry has been pretty comparable with the movie industry in terms of scale, it hasn&'t yet received the same recognition the movie industry regularly garners for its musical prowess.Previous Story: Adobe: More than 84M smartphones and tablets support AIRPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Baba Yetu, Civilization, Civilization IV, Grammies, GrammyPeople: Christopher Tin, Sid Meier Tags: Baba Yetu, Civilization, Civilization IV, Grammies, GrammyPeople: Christopher Tin, Sid MeierMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
It looks like early reports about social gaming giant Zyngaa4a4s new funding round were a little conservative.Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Zynga was raising $250 million at a valuation of $7 &8211' $9 billion. Now both The New York Times and All Things Digital report that the funding round is almost completed, and that it gives Zynga a $10 billion valuation. The reports differ on the funding amount, with The Times saying that it will be $250 million while All Things Digital says ita4a4s $500 million.Zyngaa4a4s 2010 revenue was estimated to be $850 million, so the company is being valued at more than 10 times that amount. VentureBeata4a4s Dean Takahashi said the rumored $7 billion valuation was a4Aastoundinga4 but that Zynga has attracted enormous investor interest since it cracked the free-to-play gaming model, where the games are free but players pay for virtual goods. It also helps that Zynga has moved past its first big hit, FarmVille, with its new game CityVille becoming the fastest-growing game ever. Plus, ita4a4s getting serious about international expansion and mobile gaming (in the latter case through the acquisition of Words With Friends-maker Newtoy). The other big-name social networking companies are seeing similarly elevated valuations, with Facebook valued at $50 billion after earning about $2 billion in revenue last year, and Twitter valued at $3.7 billion despite only recently getting serious about revenue.Zyngaa4a4s new funding, like Facebook&'s, is seen as a likely prelude to an initial public offering. Potential investors reportedly include Morgan Stanley, T. Rowe Price, and Fidelity Investments.(Zynga founder and chief executive Mark Pincus is pictured above.)Previous Story: Subscriptions put Apple in antitrust spotlight againPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CityVille, social games, Words With FriendsCompanies: Fidelity Investments, Morgan Stanley, T.
Electric cars are getting blinged out. We&'ve written before about how major automakers like Nissan, Ford and GM are plowing forth with electric car and hybrid offerings. Nissan, in particular, wants to grab 20 percent of the global electric cars market. But luxury automakers are getting into the game, too. Could it mean competition for luxury electric car startups like Tesla and FiskerBig news on this came from BMW recently. First, the company is launching an entire eco-friendly sub-brand of its cars, called &''i.&'' The lineup includes the i3 all-electric city car and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. It is also piloting 1,000 ActiveE electrified BMW coupes, testing out a car sharing service and just said it would launch a $100 million venture capital fund to invest in transportation-related services. It has already backed My City Way, which makes a smartphone application that helps users find nearby services like bathrooms and restaurants.Rolls Royce also plans to trot out a plug-in hybrid, the Phantom 102EX, which the company&'s chief executive called the &''first battery electric vehicle for the ultra-luxury segment.&''Mercedes-Benz has also been dabbling with green cars. It has been leasing fuel-cell powered vehicles (the F-Cell) and recently showed a very sexy electric sports car at an auto show in Detroit. SLS AMG (pictured, above) goes from zero to 62 in 3.8 seconds, is due out in 2013 and will likely cost around $307,000.While Nissan is best known in the electric car world for its all-electric Leaf hatchback that went on sale in December, it&'s also launching a sporty electric car. The Esflow, pictured on the right, can do zero to 62 miles per hour in less than five seconds and the company is promising 150 miles of range on a fully charged battery.Of course, the Tesla Roadster has been available for a few years now, and the company has a lot of fans. Fisker is also launching a sports car plug-in hybrid, the Karma, with a $95,500 price tag. The car has gone through several rounds of delays and price increases over the past few years, and arguably no longer has first-mover advantages in the luxury plug-in hybrid segment.Who do you think will be next in the luxury electric car game Will there be an electric Ferrari coming out any time soon How about a hybrid Hummer Better yet &8230' a hybrid Hummer limoNext Story: OnLive will give you a free console if you buy a game Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Geothermal wins $96.8M loan guarantee, Ethanol could suffer in national budget cutsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: ActiveE, electric cars, electric vehicles, Esflow, f-cell, Karma, Leaf, Phantom 102EX, Roadster, SLS AMGCompanies: Bmw, Fisker, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Rolls Royce, Tesla Tags: ActiveE, electric cars, electric vehicles, Esflow, f-cell, Karma, Leaf, Phantom 102EX, Roadster, SLS AMGCompanies: Bmw, Fisker, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Rolls Royce, TeslaIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
