SAN FRANCISCO--Google touted Android's spread across the world today, saying growth of the mobile operating system and applications is accelerating. It's all bragging at the Google I/O conference, of course, but the numbers from Hugo Barra, director of Android product management, are real:&149' There have been 100 million Android device activations.&149' A total of 310 Android devices have gone on sale.&149' There are 36 phone makers, 215 carriers, and 450,000 Android developers.&149' The phones are available in 112 countries.&149' It took two years to reach the first billion application installs.
Elevation sketch of the eco-monastery set to open in Lumbini, Nepal this April.(Credit:LumbiniWorld.org)Lumbini, the UNESCO World Heritage Site so marked for being the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, will soon also be home to an "eco-monastery."The Lumbini Udyana Mahachaitya World Center for Peace and Unity (LUM), which began construction in 2006, opens this April in Nepal. It will be the largest Buddhist temple and meditation hall in Lumbini, but aims to leave the smallest carbon footprint. The lighting system for the 48,600-square-foot structure will rely entirely on solar panels to generate electricity for its lighting, as well as incorporating the use of natural light in its design. It has cavity walls for increased thermal insulation and was designed so that it can rely on natural passive airflow systems to regulate heating and cooling.Floorplan for the main building complex of the Lumbini center.(Credit:United Trungram Buddhist Fellowship)But the temple is not entirely green. The LUM center is being built to withstand earthquakes of up to 7.7 on the Richter scale, it was constructed using stone and brick masonry, as well as concrete, a material known for its release of carbon gases when manufactured. The building itself, however, was constructed in large part without the use of electricity. That was mainly due to frequent power outages in the area, necessitating workers to even carry "heavy buckets of wet cement to the top of the structure's dome," according to Dharmakaya, the organization leading the building effort."This is an effort to save the ancient arts and wisdom, to highlight the importance of our gentleness to the earth, and to promote a sense of peace and unity for all," Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche, the high-ranking lama leading the project."Architecturally, unlike many other monasteries, this one will be a modern hybrid monastery. It is a chaitya based on the ancient Indian work of Shariputra's stupa found at Nalanda University, and also incorporates Nepalese architecture, which is then beautified by Tibetan artworks," Rinpoche said.Rinpoche, a Harvard graduate, is known for being one of the first lamas to earn a Western Ph.D.

0 Vote(s)

Mozilla has begun to wind down work on the next generation of itsFirefox browser. In today's release of Firefox 4 beta 12, there are few improvements that will be instantly noticed by most users. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, what has changed are under-the-hood improvements to how Firefox 4 handles Flash and more stable overall performance. One visual change has been to move hover-over links to the bottom of the window, rather than place them in the location bar as was done in the previous beta. Along with the changes to Flash handling and stability, Mozilla said in its release notes for Firefox 4 beta 12 that the browser now has better integration of add-ons with hardware acceleration support. The company hopes that this beta will be the last, according to an updated roadmap. The release of the twelfth beta indicates that all the hard-blocker bugs, the highest-priority problems with the in-development browser, have been fixed. Barring major problems with the remaining bugs, users can expect a release candidate soon.

0 Vote(s)

Wea4a4re going to be seeing Nvidiaa4a4s dual-core Tegra 2 chip on a slew of devices this year, including Motorolaa4a4s Xoom tablet and LGa4a4s Optimus 2X phone. Now it looks like Nvidia has quad-core ambitions for the chipa4a4s next iteration, the Tegra 3, according to an internal slide revealed by Bright Side of News. The news means we can expect even more powerful phones and tablets later this year and that the line between mobile devices and traditional computers will be blurred even further.According to the slide, the tablet version of the Tegra 3 chip will run at speeds up to 1.5 gigahertz, support Blu-ray video and screen resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels (slightly higher than 1080p high-definition video). The notion of Blu-ray drives in tablets is silly, but the chipa4a4s support for it could mean that Nvidia envisions the Tegra 3 as something that can also be used in ultraportable laptops, all-in-one desktops or kiosks. Nvidia also touts an ultra low power mode that will prevent the CPU from being a battery hog.The phone version of the Tegra 3 will be available in quad or dual-core varieties and support displays up to 1366 by 768 pixels in resolution, something most often seen in laptops around 13 inches. I cana4a4t imagine why quad-core CPUs would be justified in a phone, but as a gadget geek ita4a4s still exciting to see hardware boundaries pushed. The same slide also reveals that Nvidia has a 3D version of the Tegra 2 on the horizon, which could be used to bring 3D capabilities to mobile devices.Tegra 3 devices will start appearing at the end of the year.Via EngadgetNext Story: Groupon and Foursquare founders: we didn&'t sell out because we&'re not done Previous Story: FunGoPlay launches virtual-world sports, real-world sports gear for kidsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CPU, quad core, smartphones, SoC, system-on-a-chip, tablets, Tegra 3Companies: Nvidia Tags: CPU, quad core, smartphones, SoC, system-on-a-chip, tablets, Tegra 3Companies: NvidiaDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
ReadyForZero, a Y Combinator-backed startup that looks to help card-carrying consumers reduce their credit card debt, announced that it is going live for everyone. The company launched just 6 months ago.The service lets card carriers connect their credit card accounts online and see just how deep in the hole they are, and offers ways to track and pay off that debt. Users register a certain date when they want to be debt free, or decide on how much they are willing to pay each month. ReadyForZero then sets up a payment schedule and offers a few extra tools to help pay off that debt a4" such as showing which cards to pay off first or offering loans.ReadyForZero works with a number of independent companies to securely access credit card information and doesn&'t store any of that information on its servers.&''Some of this stuff is actionable on your own, we can&'t force you to do it,&'' said ReadyForZero chief executive Rod Ebrahimi. &''But we can see whether you&'ve done it or not, and we&'re able to show [users] some tools they haven&'t considered.&''ReadyForZero works with Lending Club to give users a chance to take out loans with a lower interest rate than that on their cards. The loans help users save a little bit of extra cash by effectively cutting the interest rate on part of their debt. For example, a Bank of America credit card might have a 10 percent interest rate, but a Lending Club loan might only have a 5 percent interest rate a4" so the user shaves off a small amount of debt without doing anything really significant. The service automatically determines whether its users are able to qualify for Lending Club loans. ReadyForZero is also looking to work with other companies that offer loans and, eventually, the banks that are issuing credit cards themselves. Ebrahimi said the company might add certain milestones for each user that show when they qualify for newer low-interest loans.ReadyForZero currently makes its revenue by taking a small percentage of each loan. In the future, Ebrahimi said he wants ReadyForZero to serve as a barometer for someone&'s credit history a4" similar to a credit score a4" when they look to take out a loan by showing statistics and credit history within the service. That&'s another service that could also generate revenue, he said.Ebrahimi also wants to automate debt payments in ReadyForZero so users don&'t have to manually track their credit activity. That kind of service could generate revenue through a subscription model, though for the time being ReadyForZero will remain a free service, he said.&''We&'re only 6 months old, we&'re just sort of figuring this out on the fly as we go along,&'' he said.ReadyForZero has raised $260,000 from Y Combinator and a few angel investors like Dave McClure and Steve Chen. It was part of the Summer 2010 Y Combinator class and is manned by &''three guys in a garage,&'' Ebrahimi said.Next Story: Google shows off 3D graphics in new Android software for tablets Previous Story: Apple brings news subscriptions to the iPad, starting with The DailyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: credit cards, credit rating, debtCompanies: ReadyForZero, Y CombinatorPeople: Dave McClure, Rod Ebrahimi, Steve Chen Tags: credit cards, credit rating, debtCompanies: ReadyForZero, Y CombinatorPeople: Dave McClure, Rod Ebrahimi, Steve ChenMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
