Will the HTC Thunderbolt get simultaneous voice and data(Credit:Phandroid)Simultaneous voice and data won't be available on Verizon until this spring, at least that's the common knowledge shared by the CDMA Development Group. Yet we've been hearing rumors over the last several days--from Phandroid and Engadget, for instance--that the Android-powered HTC Thunderbolt will have this functionality on Verizon's 3G data network.HTC Thunderbolt for Verizon. The rumor is based on supposedly leaked internal documents destined for the sales team. Neither Verizon nor HTC were immediately available for comment, and Verizon has not officially stated it will adopt the technology change.According to photos, the Verizon sales sheet (dated January 25, 2011 and 1/31/2011) reads: There is functionality in the Thunderbolt that allows simultaneous voice and data while on the VZW 3G network, however, we cannot promise the experience will be one that is consistent with our brand. As a result, do not reference this functionality as a benefit during your conversations with customers.Simultaneous voice and data is a 3G feature that the competing GSM technology can currently lord over Verizon and Sprint's CDMA networks. The functionality is what allows you to check your e-mail and maps app without hanging up a call--and its one useful feature that will be missing from theVerizoniPhone at launch. It's not a stretch of the imagination that these documents are legitimate and voice and data will indeed be jointly available on the Thunderbolt. The smartphone we first saw atCES isn't due out until mid-year, which still fits into the spring timeline to flip on the voice-and-data switch for CDMA. It's a sure bet that, if true, Big Red's keeping the news hush-hush to mitigate any future disappointment at some jolting hiccups if the new technology doesn't initially run as smoothly as possible. Verizon does have a reputation, after all, to carefully and jealously maintain.

0 Vote(s)

LG angles for more customers.(Credit:Eric Franklin/CNET)LAS VEGAS--When LED backlighting and IPS panels are brought together, the results are impressive. Many LCD HDTVs take advantage of this melding of technologies to deliver crisp images to everyone watching them--no matter how wide the person's viewing angle--on a thin screen that draws relatively low power. This week atCES 2011, LG demoed the IPS6 series, a slim LED-based monitor with an IPS panel.LG showcased a useful demo demonstrating the advantages of IPS over TN.(Credit:Eric Franklin/CNET)As you can see in the photo above, IPS panels maintain their picture and color integrity even when viewed from extremely off angles, while TN panels do not. The only detail that gives us pause is the relativity low brightness compared with other IPS monitors. 250 cd/M2 is by no means a low number, but IPS displays usually hit at over the 300 cd/m2 range or more.Incoming specs:1920x1080 resolution250 cd/M2 brightness (125 cd/M2 in 3D)VGA, DVI, HDMI connections Six axis color controlsLook for more info in the coming months.

0 Vote(s)

News360 is one of 53 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Spring 2011 event taking place this week in Palm Desert, Calif.. These companies do pay a fee to present, but our coverage of them remains objective. Most readers of online news are either swamped by information, much it duplicated or irrelevant, or limit their reading to a few sources, thereby possibly missing out on important information. News360 attempts to improve the situationby providing personalized, &''cream of the crop&'', news stories on mobile devices.News360 aggregates more than a thousand different news sources and uses semantic text analysis to identify the meaning of an article, rather than just categorizing based on keywords. An entity extractor identifies the companies, people, brands and places in each story. More than 500,000 different entities can be identified. Articles from different sources which cover the same news are clustered together and sorted into different news categories. The platform then uses all this semantic metadata to deliver concise and targeted news feeds on mobile devices.News360can filter news by location or topic. The user can also create custom feeds based on the set of entities, or import this data from their Facebook profile, to get a single unified feed that shows news stories about all the topics which are of interest to that user.News360 uses a simple swipe interface that makes it easy to scroll through news on a mobile device. An object dossier creates summary pages around topics. Click on the word a4AApplea4 and the app explains what Apple is, thus removing the need to perform a web search while reading news. The News360 app is free and is available for iPhone and iPad and Windows 7. It has been downloaded more than 200,000 times and gets about 20,000 daily unique users. Its main competitors are services like Google News, Flipboard and Pulse News. The founders claim that News360 improves on those services since it doesn&'t require any configuration or feed selection but can still provide personalized news via a Facebook connection or local news via a Tripit account. It also covers all the points of coverage of every news story, thus giving a true 360 degree view.New360&'s team is experimenting with different monetization models including premium features, advertising and partnerships with content owners, but hasn&'t yet committed to any particular model.News360 was founded in 2010 in Moscow, has 20 employees and has received 5 million dollars on funding, some of which was provided by Russian VC firm Oradell.Previous Story: DEMO: MobileNation lets anyone become a mobile app developerPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: feeds, mobile, News, semanticCompanies: News360 Tags: feeds, mobile, News, semanticCompanies: News360Ciara Byrne is a full time techie and part-time writer.
