Comcast today said its proposed deal to acquire control of General Electric's NBC Universal won't get regulatory approval by the end of the year, as the company had hoped. The cable giant issued a statement saying that even though the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice have made "substantial progress toward approval," it simply doesn't have enough time this year to complete the transaction, which was announced at the end of 2009. "Because of the lead time required to prepare for a close, it now appears that we will not be able to close the transaction with GE relating to NBC Universal by year-end," Sena Fitzmaurice, a spokeswoman for Comcast, said in a statement. "We have notified our transition teams that there will not be a December 31 closing."Comcast believes that the review process is on track for the deal to close in January 2011. Reuters reported that NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker, who will leave the company, once the deal is complete, sent a memo to staff on Wednesday reiterating Comcast's hope that the deal will close in January. The company announced its plans to buy NBC Universal from General Electric a year ago this month. The deal would create a media giant worth about $37 billion, combining Comcast's cable channels and NBC's television, movie, and theme park assets.Regulators have been examining the deal for months, paying particular attention to the companies' online-video distribution, program access, and program carriage, according to Reuters. Regulators and opponents of the merger are concerned that the combination of Comcast and NBC could stifle the nascent online-video market. NBC Universal is part-owner of the video site Hulu, along with News Corp. and Walt Disney.Regulators are also concerned that Comcast could abuse its power by using new channels it has acquired from NBC Universal to gain an unfair advantage in program negotiations with pay-TV subscribers. NBC Universal includes networks such as USA, Bravo, and MSNBC. Some of Comcast's competitors and rivals have pushed regulators to impose conditions on the merger. Earlier this month, Level 3, a tier 1 backbone provider that connects to Comcast to deliver video and other traffic to Comcast customers, asked the FCC to impose Net neutrality conditions on the merger. Level 3, which had been negotiating with Comcast, said the cable operator is trying to force it to pay for delivering video traffic on its network. Comcast has said Level 3's claims are unfounded and that the issue is a simple peering dispute. Under terms of the acquisition, Comcast will control 51 percent of NBC Universal, once the deal is complete.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Nintendo)While we haven't really been impressed with gaming's presence at the last few CES shows, there does seem to be some evidence that 2011 might be different. Given the news that Nintendo will be making an appearance in Las Vegas, we're anxious to see if the company will be offering a more in-depth look at the next portable gaming system to hit around springtime, the 3DS. There is also a growing buzz surrounding what's arguably 3D's best platform: video games. Expect to see more 3D HDTV manufacturers showcasing their products' prowess while hooked up to aPlayStation 3 most likely using the highly anticipated Killzone 3 as eye candy. Of course we're expecting the usual round of new accessories from third-party manufacturers like Turtle Beach, Nyko, and Mad Catz, all of which should now be ready to introduce products compatible with the Microsoft Kinect and PlayStation Move as well. We're also hoping to see updates to our Best of CES 2010 winner, the Alienware M11x. Will new high-powered compact gaming rigs show their faces next month 2010 seemed to be the year that the gaming headset broke out, so we'll be shocked if a handful of new entries in that market aren't introduced at the big show. Historically speaking, CES isn't the prime venue for conventional video game unveilings, but considering the odds of the 3DS being in town, what we're expecting in regard to 3D, and the impressive showing made by download-only titles last year, CES 2011 might have a few tricks up its sleeve to delight gamers after all.

0 Vote(s)

Just two months after the announcement of Google Instant, Google is unveiling another big change to its main search product: Through a feature called Google Instant Previews, users will be able to see screenshots of each search result.Raj Krishnan, a product manager on Google Web search, said today&'s news is connected to Google Instant (which displays and refines search results as you type your query) because both features help users find the search result they&'re looking for more quickly. There&'s a lot of information about a webpage that&'s hard to convey with a link and a few snippets of text, he said. With a screenshot, you can see where your search terms fall on the page, whether multiple terms show up close together, and whether a page contains charts, lists, images, and so on. If your search term has multiple meanings, a screenshot can also help you see whether a webpage matches the meaning you had in mind &8212' whether it&'s a page about Apple the computer product versus apple the fruit, for example. And you get a general feel for what kind of webpage you&'re looking at, whether it&'s a cleanly designed, professional website, or something poorly laid out and overwhelming. One of Google&'s goals for Instant Previews was to make the process as fast as possible, Krishnan said. It should take less than a tenth of a second to load each preview. Users bring up a preview by clicking on the magnifying glass next to a result, then they can hover over any magnifying glass to see a preview of that result. With the fast load times, it should feel &''instantaneous&'' as they scroll between the previews of multiple search results, Krishnan said. In the background, Google has added these webpage snapshots to its index of the Web, although it can also fetch new screenshots that seem relevant during your actual search.Early tests showed that people who users with Instant Previews are 5 percent happier with the search result they click on, which Krishnan said is a big improvement.Google wants to add Instant Previews to its mobile search results too, he said, but the interface will need a significant redesign since there&'s less screen space to work with and you don&'t have a hovering mouse.I imagine these previews could also make Google&'s big moneymaker &8212' the advertising that runs alongside its search results &8212' more valuable. When I asked about adding Instant Previews to ads, Krishnan said, &''Yes, it is something we&'re exploring, but there are no set dates that I can talk about.&''It&'s impressive how much Google&'s search results have changed in just the last couple of months, especially since there was a period a few years ago when search barely seemed to be changing at all. The Instant Previews feature seems particularly noteworthy since Google has been notoriously protective about its search results and has resisted adding anything that might clutter up the page. Whenever you ask about competition, company executives like to say that they&'re more focused on improving their own products in response to user needs, but it&'s probably no coincidence that Google&'s making big improvements as it feels pressure from Microsoft&'s Bing.Google plans to roll out the Instant Previews features globally over the next few days. Users in right-to-left languages like Hebrew and Farsi will have to wait a little longer.Next Story: Review: Microsoft&'s Kinect motion-sensing game system isn&'t as good as we hoped Previous Story: 6 tips on finding the right mentorPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Google Instant PreviewsCompanies: GooglePeople: Raj Krishnan Tags: Google Instant PreviewsCompanies: GooglePeople: Raj KrishnanAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Two weeks ago, Google launched Hotpot, a new site related to Google Places that makes it easy (and sort of fun) to rate your favorite venues and see what your friends have recently liked. The tech press seemed to take notice of the site for two reasons: first, it&'s got a nice design and is more fun than you&'d expect. And second, Hotpot is a pretty strange name. Now, it didn&'t take long to figure out that this was a reference to the group-oriented Chinese meal hot pot, but many people have never heard of that, and Google didn&'t really go out of its way to explain the choice. Now, two weeks after it left some people scratching their heads, it&'s posted an explanation to its Places blog that gives a bit more background:Hot pot, the dish, is about community. You and your friends huddle together and add ingredients to a pot of boiling broth, creating a delicious soup to be enjoyed by all. Sometimes you take your own food from the pot, and sometimes you taste what your friends have added. This shared experience of gathering around a fire to cook and eat communally is a fundamental illustration of how wea4a4ve come together to enjoy food from the earliest days of humanity.Of course, none of this could possibly be related to Facebook&'s acquisition of Hot Potato, whose founder/CEO Justin Shaffer is now head of Facebook Places. Which obviously competes directly with Google Places.Stay tuned for Google Places&' next product, 3square, named after the cafe/bakery founded by Hans Rckenwagner in Venice, California.CrunchBase InformationGoogle PlacesInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

We wrote about the Foursquare for websites OneTrueFan, at the startup&'s launch at TechCrunch Disrupt in September. After three months in Alpha, OneTrueFan is opening its doors and launching in beta.OneTrueFan is a service for web publishers that allows visitors to earn badges for interacting and sharing content on the site. The startup revolves around a game-format for visitors that allows you to see who is reading content in the site, compete for the most engagement and encourages you to share content within the service and on social networks. As users share via OneTrueFan, they can earn points, and special badges from publishers. Users can see a leaderboard of fellow users who have been sharing content on a particular site and can mouse over fellow contributors to see more information about how theya4a4ve been interacting with a site. All of this info can be seen on an interactive player bar at the bottom of a publishera4a4s website. With the beta launch, the OneTrueFan player bar has gotten a massive visual and UI upgrade. And publishers can now install OneTrueFan on their site (previously only visitors could use OneTrueFan through its browser add-on). The startup has also rolled out a news feed, which taps into your Twitter feed to give you a list of links you should visit based on what your contacts shared. Links are ordered based upon a combination of friends who have shared and visited the URL, strangers who have shared and visited the URL and how long ago the page was posted. Publishers will ultimately have access to a version of this news feed that lets them know in real-time what their fans are most interested in around the web. The appeal of OneTrueFan for publishers is that it goes beyond a check-in to creates an element of interactivity around sharing of their content. If the startup can gain enough publisher and user participation, it could be an interesting model for news sites, in particular. OneTrueFan is the brainchild of MyBlogLog&'s founders Eric Marcoullier and Todd Sampson. MyBlogLog was acquired by Yahoo in 2007 (although we found out today that Yahoo is shuttering the service) Unsurprisingly, some of OneTrueFan&'s interface is similar to MyBlogLog. OneTrueFan has raised $1.2 million in seed funding from Dave McClure, Jeff Clavier, First Round Capital, David Cohen and Bob Pasker.CrunchBase InformationOneTrueFanInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft&'s search engine, Bing, now has 27 percent of the search engine market and is quickly gaining on Google, according to Hitwise. Bing&'s share rose by 6 percent in the month of January alone. The bigger news, and perhaps the underlying reason for the rise: Microsoft&'s Bing might be the better search engine. Hitwise says that Google&'s &''success rate&'' is just 65 percent, compared with an 82 percent score for Bing. The success rate is the percentage of times users click on links yielded by searches.Google is still by far the most popular search engine, with 68 percent of the market. Hitwise measures 70 other search engines, which together share 4.6 percent of the market.ZDNet&'s Larry Dignan writes that &''Microsofta4a4s deal with Yahoo [to run Bing results in Yahoo searches] appears to be paying off.&'' In one sense, that&'s true: Without Yahoo, Bing&'s market share would be just 12.8 percent. But searches on Yahoo fell in January, from 15.2 percent of the total to 14.6 percent, while searches at Bing.com rose by 21 percent.I fully agree with Dignan, though, when he says that Bing is increasingly looking like a threat to Google.Next Story: Minicomputer pioneer and DEC founder Ken Olsen dies at 84 Previous Story: European mobile carriers hope Nokia avoids AndroidPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Bing, search enginesCompanies: Google, hitwise, Microsoft Tags: Bing, search enginesCompanies: Google, hitwise, MicrosoftDan Mitchell covers media and technology for VentureBeat, Fortune.com, and anyone else who will pay him.
