(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)SAN FRANCISCO--As it does every year, Apple started setting up for its Worldwide Developers Conference days in advance of its kickoff, offering a glimpse at what will greet attendees next week. Signage put up by the company today inside the lobby of San Francisco's Moscone Center doesn't unveil anything we didn't already know from a press release issued earlier this week, but offers the first look at the logos for iCloud and iOS 5.iCloud was first mentioned and named by the company on Tuesday, along with word that Apple CEO Steve Jobs would be doing the keynote address. iCloud's rectangular, app-like appearance on the banner suggests it will exist separately of iTunes, and potentially fit in with the company's existing lineup of MobileMe services to which it bears a resemblance. As for the iOS 5 logo, it's nearly identical to the one for iOS 4, short of having a 5 instead of a 4. That could simply be a branding choice rather than an indication it will be an modest update from the current version. Along with iCloud and iOS 5, Lion is given a spot at the very front of the pack. Apple first introduced the upcoming version of theMac OS at an event back in October, and is likely to offer a price and release date at Monday's keynote.
In a successful end-of-the-year push, the South Korean phonemaker Samsung says it sold 10 million Galaxy S smartphones globally in 2010. The announcement means that the Galaxy S is the first Android phone (or, rather, a family of phones) to pass the 10 million mark.Samsung announced in late December that the company had sold 9.3 million Galaxy S phones, so it is no surprise that the company managed to reach its goal by the end of the year. According to Samsung Hub, the company has sold 1.4 million phones per month, or roughly 40,000 smartphones per day.Of the ten million smartphones, Samsung sold 4 million units in North America, 2.5 million units in Europe and 2 million devices in the Korean market. While making a milestone for Google&'s operating system, the Galaxy S has not&8211'yet&8211'usurped Apple&'s iPhone, which sold 14.1 million units worldwide in the quarter that ended in September. Apple still makes for stiff competition, as the company said in late December that it expects to ship 20 to 21 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2011, upping its original plans by 1-2 million units. But for Samsung, the phone maker that is set on becoming the number one mobile manufacturer in the world, this is good news indeed.Next Story: VentureBeat&'s top 10 tech trends of 2011 (vote for your favorite) Previous Story: 7 ways to get a VC you don&'t know to mentor youPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Samsung Galaxy SCompanies: Apple, Google, Samsung Tags: Android, Samsung Galaxy SCompanies: Apple, Google, SamsungVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
Amazon has officially launched its own app store with 3,800 Android apps in what will be a fierce battle with Apple. The new store is considered a potent competitor in the mobile apps space, with Amazon bidding to create the equivalent of Applea4a4s iTunes for Googlea4a4s Android mobile operating system. One sign that Amazon is coming out swinging: it is making Angry Birds Rio, the new version of the hot mobile game that got its start on the Apple App Store, available for free on the Amazon Appstore.Apple came out swinging as well, filing a trademark infringement suit yesterday over Amazona4a4s use of the word a4AAppstorea4 which is so similar to Applea4a4s a4AApp Store.a4 There are lots of other Android app stores out there, and Google itself operates the Android Market, but no other rival has such deep roots in e-commerce as Amazon. The Amazon Appstore can be downloaded to a user&'s handset. The store will support hundreds of mobile operators and hardware manufacturers. Amazon has been recruiting app makers for months. But it has only about 1 percent of the total number of apps on Applea4a4s store, which is nearly three years old.Amazona4a4s Appstore will let shoppers buy apps alongside other digital content like music, eBooks, and games. Participants include Gameloft, Handmark and Glu Mobile, which have been among the most successful app makers on the iPhone.Calling all mobile executives: This April 25-26, VentureBeat is hosting its inaugural VentureBeat Mobile Summit, where we&'ll debate the five key business and policy challenges facing the mobile industry today. Participants will develop concrete, actionable solutions that will shape the future of the mobile industry. The invitation-only event, located at the scenic and relaxing Cavallo Point Resort in Sausalito, Calif., is limited to 180 mobile executives, investors and policymakers. We&'ve pretty much finalized the invite list, but have a few spots left.
