Google is arousing the anger of rival search providers who argue that the company is intentionally and unfairly ranking content from its own specialized search services above their own.The complaint centers on searches for specialized or local content, such as travel services, health sites, and reviews of local restaurants and businesses. In the past, users searching on Google for such content were typically directed to specialized search providers, companies like TripAdvisor.com, WebMD.com, and Citysearch.com.But as Google has increasingly ramped up its own specialized search services, these companies believe the search giant is stacking the deck by purposely ranking its own content above theirs, a complaint cited in a story out today by The Wall Street Journal. This means that a search for health services would more likely point a user to a site like Google Health over WebMD or a search for a mortage would direct someone to one of Google's own mortgage-related pages ahead of a site like Bankrate.com.Google was quick to defend its local and specialized search methods in a blog post today, shortly after the Journal article appeared. The company said it tries to provide people with answers as quickly as possible, which sometimes means a link to a business and other times a map or list of review sites. The recent complaints may have been fueled by new Google features, such as its Place Pages, which launched earlier this year. The service is designed to direct users to local business listings. But pins that appear next to the businesses displayed on a map link more prominently to their own Web sites or to more detailed Google Place Pages ahead of business review sites offered by rival search providers, according to the Journal. Two weeks ago, the European Commission announced that it was launching an antitrust investigation against Google over this same issue. Based on complaints from three specialized search providers, the probe will look into whether the search giant is unfairly manipulating results for both paid and unpaid searches to favor its own services.Ultimately at stake is a greater chunk of ad revenue, which Google stands to capture at the expense of the specialized search providers."Google does seem to be chasing us and I don't like it one bit," TripAdvisor Chief Executive Officer Stephen Kaufer told the Journal, who added that he's been working with Google for a couple of months to try to improve the situation. In defense of its Place Pages, the company said that the service offers people an easy way to compare different places and find sites with local information. Google added that it's heard from users, businesses, and Webmasters alike who find Place pages useful. And in a not-so-subtle nod to the complaints from its rivals, the company noted in its blog that Google was built for users, not for Web sites.

0 Vote(s)

Though it's in hot water with the U.S. government, WikiLeaks is being supported by online activists fighting to keep the site alive.WikiLeaks is being propped up by a barrage of mirror sites created by activists following moves by Amazon to stop hosting its site and Domain Name System provider EveryDNS.net to cut off its DNS services, according to The New York Times. Such mirrors can replicate an entire Web site, ensuring that all content and documents remain online and accessible even if WikiLeaks' own site is taken down. But some of WikiLeaks supporters are adopting a more hostile tone. On Saturday PayPal restricted access to WikiLeaks' account to prevent fund raisers from donating money to help the site. In return, the PayPal blog page that announced the decision to shut off WikiLeaks' account was taken offline for around eight hours last night by a distributed denial- of-service (DDoS) attack.Experts at Panda Labs pointed to a statement from the "hacktivist" group Anonymous, which said that the PayPal blog would be the target of its first DDoS counterattack on behalf of WikiLeaks. Panda also cited comments from a Twitter account named AnonyWatcher, which released several statements related to the attack. The offensive against PayPal could be a sign of bigger things yet to come. A poster on a file upload site has issued a rallying cry for further action on Anonymous' DDoS campaigns.Twitter has also come under criticism from some who believe the microblogging site may be censoring trends devoted to WikiLeaks. Twitter trends reveal the most popular topics being tweeted. But Web site blogs such as OSNews, OSDir, Safety First, and StudentActivism.net have reported findings that terms such as wikileaks and Assange have not been trending nearly as heavily as they should given the amount of news and discussions surrounding WikiLeaks. In response to such criticism, someone identifying himself as Twitter engineer Josh Elman e-mailed Angus Johnston of the StudentActivism.net site to defend his company saying that "Twitter hasn't modified trends in any way to help or prevent WikiLeaks from trending."Trying to explain the absence of WikiLeaks in the top trends, Elman said that topics related to WikiLeaks are showing up in the company's trends dashboard, but aren't hitting the top ten. "While I personally feel this is a very important topic, that doesn't mean it's as widespread across the Twitter user base," Elman told Johnston by e-mail.WikiLeaks, which has been in trouble with the U.S. government before, has come under intense fire lately over its release of classified and in some cases embarrassing U.S. State Department documents. While activists have been spurred to fight for the site, government officials have been up in arms, with several calling for WikiLeaks to be classified as a terrorist group. And what of WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange The U.S. government is demanding his head on a platter over the leaks of sensitive information, while Sweden still wants him on charges of sex crimes. But he may yet find refuge in his own country of Australia. The country's attorney general Robert McClelland said today that Assange would be allowed back in Australia and would be accorded the same protections given to any other citizen, according to CNN.In making the offer public, McClelland was responding to comments from Assange last week that Australia would not only prevent him from returning home, but that the nation was working with the U.S. government to attack WikiLeaks.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft representatives said today in an interview the Kinect interface was left unprotected by design.(Credit:Microsoft )Microsoft representatives appearing on National Public Radio's "Science Friday" today said that the company's Kinect motion-controller was left open by "design," despite earlier comments by the company that it did not "condone" Kinect's hacking.A tweet by the "Science Friday" staff read "(Xbox director of incubation) Alex Kipman says Kinect interface was left unprotected 'by design.' [And Microsoft's] Shannon Loftis says she's 'inspired' by community finding new uses." But earlier this month, in response to a $3,000 challenge by the open-source hardware outfit Adafruit Industries to come up with a hardware hack of the Kinect, Microsoft had said it did not "condone" such behavior. Now, Adafruit is clearly feeling vindicated by the apparent turn of events. "Congrats to everyone in the open source community," Adafruit wrote on its blog. "In about one week we turned [Microsoft's contention that it would stop hacking of the Kinect by working] 'closely with law enforcement' to 'inspired' by community finding new uses for Kinect."This post will be updated as soon as possible with comment from Microsoft.

0 Vote(s)

Mozilla touts its influence numerically.(Credit:Mozilla)Mozilla, maker of theFirefox Web browser, saw its 2009 revenue increase 34 percent from $78 million the year before to $104 million. The organization's source of money continues to be from search partnerships, it said in its 2009 annual report, released today. The top billing goes to Google, no doubt, though Mozilla didn't break out a specific percentage and instead lumped the search giant's revenue in with Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon, and eBay.Mozilla's contract with Google, renewed in 2008 and running through 2011, returns a portion of Google search-ad revenue to the browser maker. Mozilla drives search traffic to Google through its built-in search box. And though Google now has its own Chrome browser to promote, Mozilla indicated it's happy with the financial idea in general."We believe that search providers will remain a solid generator of revenue for Mozilla for the foreseeable future," Mozilla said in a FAQ.Expenses--employees and computer equipment, mostly--also increased, from $49 million in 2009 to $61 million in 2009. Mozilla, though isn't a business (read about its tanglings with the Internal Revenue Service in the auditor's report PDF), but rather an organization with a mission: "Mozilla exists to build individual empowerment, control, and opportunity into the fabric of the Internet," Chairman Mitchell Baker said. She added this assessment:Mozilla is the underdog in our efforts to build participation and empowerment into the Internet. It's a big challenge to build our values into layers of the Internet where the commercial giants of our age are battling it out. Mozilla has always faced this kind of challenge. We started in an era when everyone "knew" our goals were impossible because Microsoft was invincible. Today, Mozilla is stronger than ever. Our opportunity to bring openness and choice to new aspects of the online experience is unprecedented.More specifically, Mozilla said there are now more than 400 million Firefox users, 140 million of them daily, and that it's expanding with initiatives such as mobile Firefox.

0 Vote(s)

If you&'re an engineer on the West Coast looking to join a hot startups, here&'s a good reason to prepare your resume. According to a company blog post, popular mobile check-in application Foursquare has decided to put together a full team of engineers in its new West Coast office.Foursquare is going from basically squatting at the Square office in San Francisco to claiming additional space for a larger team of engineers, who are needed in part to handle the company&'s monthly user growth of 30 percent.Co-founder and chief executive Dennis Crowley told VentureBeat, &''We&'re looking to fill 10-15 spots, but we&'re not racing to fill them.

The holiday selling season is about to kick off and, slow economy or not, tech gadgets are going to be high on the wish list for a lot of us. At VentureBeat, we like gifts that work, that are fun, and that are affordable. Many of these ideas for gifts aren&'t brand new. That&'s because new stuff breaks and costs a lot. You won&'t see web-connected 3D TVs that play apps on our list because that&'s too far on the bleeding edge now. They&'re just not safe purchases, given how fast the technology is changing and how much better and cheaper they&'re going to get with time. Our top picks were easy. Apple or Apple or Apple. Which Apple device, was the hard question. But the iPad captured everyone&'s imagination this year, as the device&'s unique design finally set fire to the tablet computer category. Some devices like the Apple iPod Touch and the iPod Shuffle are also great products, but we can&'t make our list full of nothing but Apple devices, can we Throughout the year, these devices got more and more useful as the apps multiplied and the content, such as Beatles songs, arrived in droves. What&'s the right way to shop these days Start online to find the best deals and prices. Skip the store warranty. Watch the prices go down. Of course, that won&'t work with some items on this list. Microsoft&'s Kinect motion-control system and the Sony PlayStation Move, for instance, are in short supply. You can find our last year&'s list here. Here&'s this year&'s list:1. iPad (Apple. $499 to $829). The iPad still has about 95 percent of the tablet computer market, even though it was introduced way back in March. As we suspected, games have turned out to be the most popular application on the iPad as well as the iPhone. The mesmerizing 9.7-inch screen is great for hand gesture controls, and the accelerometer control lets you tilt the screen to make things happen. Titles such as Angry Birds show that developers are producing apps that work great on the unique hardware platform that Apple created. But other apps, such as the New York Times and Flip Board, have made the iPad into a great media consumption device. The iPad isn&'t as versatile as a computer, but when you fire up an app on the iPhone, you can pretty much bet it&'s going to work and it&'s going to be easy to control. A lot of critics have called it too expensive. Apple should bring down the price and come out with new versions on a faster timetable. But the iPad comes with one big advantage: You can get a ton of free stuff, given the thousands of free apps available on it. From the New York Times to the loads of free games, the iPad is one of those devices that can wind up saving you a lot of money on content. Many of the paid apps are just 99 cents.2. iPhone 4 (Apple. $199 to $299, with two-year AT&amp'T service). Apple outdid itself and its competitors again by coming up with the best phone on the market (check out our iPhone 4 review). The high-resolution retina display delivers sharp images, and the combo camera and camcorder can capture great images to display on the device. It does video calls, multitasking, high-definition video, and the reception problem &8212' known as Antennagate &8212' has pretty much died down, as all you have to do is get a cheap rubber case to ensure your calls don&'t get dropped. The wide variety of apps &8212' nearly 300,000 of them &8212' make this phone more useful to people who want to have a combination of productive work and diverting entertainment in one device. Games, books, and location apps are taking off like wildfire with iPhone consumers. Apple is adding new functionality with its improved operating system. You can find games more easily with Game Center, browse through iAds, and organize your apps with ease.3. Kindle (Third Generation) (Amazon. $139, $179) The Kindle has long been a good gift idea, but it&'s even more compelling this year, since Amazon has dropped its price considerably with the introduction of the $139 WiFi-only model. The $179 model with 3G is still a steal compared to its $259 price this time last year. What&'s more, the third-generation Kindle offers many improvements over previous versions, including a higher contrast E-Ink screen and an impossibly thin profile. It&'s not hyperbole to say that the Kindle is even more portable than a small paperback. Amazon will soon add book lending to the device, so you&'ll be able to share books with friends easily. And the widespread availability of Kindle software across other platforms (iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, PC, and more) means that you&'ll always have access to your ebooks.4. Kinect (Microsoft. $149). Microsoft&'s motion-control system for the Xbox 360 is rough around the edges. It&'s not as good as we expected, but we are hard to please and it&'s a lot better than other competing products on the market. We&'ll wager this sells well because there are an awful lot of consumers who don&'t care about Kinect&'s weaknesses, which include inaccuracy, weak games (sold separately), and a limited power of recognition. For kids, it&'s a magical device that lets them use their bodies to control a game on the TV screen. If you can suspend disbelief and tolerate the inaccuracy, it&'s a pretty fun experience. We get a kick out of watching people play the system for the first time. They don&'t mind making fools of themselves in front of their family and friends. In that sense, Kinect is inspiring wonder in consumers who were fascinated with Nintendo&'s Wii motion-sensing console in 2006. Since Kinect is a software-upgradeable platform, Microsoft has a lot of time to iron out the bugs and then issue software fixes for them later. Also, game developers are likely going to learn how to make great games that compensate for the limitations of the technology. That reduces the risk of buying the system now. For now, this is the closest thing to the gesture-controlled computer that Tom Cruise used in the film Minority Report. For Microsoft, that is high praise. Usually, Microsoft&'s devices come nowhere near Apple&'s in terms of creating magical experiences. This device may be very hard to find by the end of the holidays, given the high demand for it.5. OnLive MicroConsole (OnLive. $99). This system is one of the biggest bargains you&'ll come across. Bundled with a wireless controller with fast reaction times, the MicroConsole is disruptive for the game consoles. By attaching it to your TV and the web, you can use it to play high-end video games on a high-definition screen with 1080p resolution. The MicroConsole taps OnLive&'s games-on-demand servers. Those servers compute the game images and send them down at high speed over broadband connections to the device, which displays them on the screen. Normally, the game consoles do all of the heavy-duty computing. But with server games, the distribution system is all digital. A lot of critics said the technology wasn&'t feasible. But OnLive has blown past everyone&'s expectations and delivered a high-quality console experience, as you can see in this video. You can boot up the system and start playing a game in about 15 seconds. The box is tiny, and it&'s silent. The only hitch right now is that there are 35 games, and you can&'t play the hot game of the season, Call of Duty Black Ops, on the Onlive system. You also need a 5-megabit-per-second broadband connection to play HD games on a 40-inch TV. Better content will come, and when that happens, consumers and console makers will finally realize just how disruptive the OnLive system will be.6. Roku XD (Roku. $80) Roku&'s latest generation devices are cheaper and more capable than anything the company has produced before &8212' giving you little reason not to pick one up if you still need a way to watch Netflix streaming video on your TV. The XD is the mid-range offering in Roku&'s lineup, but there&'s also the cheaper $60 Roku HD, or the top-end $100 Roku XDR. We like the XD because it gives you pretty much all the features you would need, and it&'s a much better value than the $100 Apple TV. It offers a better Netflix experience than the Apple TV, as well as other services like Hulu Plus that Apple doesn&'t offer yet. While you don&'t have the convenience of iTunes purchases on the Roku, you have easy access to TV shows and movies via Amazon&'s video on demand store.7. MacBook Air (Apple. $999 to $1,599) Much like the iPad, this device blurs the line between work and play. But it has a lot of the features that the iPad ought to have, such as universal serial bus (USB 2.0) ports and full browsers. It&'s great for entertainment because it has the full Mac OS operating system and all of its applications. It can also run Microsoft Office and other productivity apps. The device uses flash memory instead of a hard drive. That means you can turn it on instantly and it&'s fast. You can switch back and forth between fun and work without having to reboot or wait a long time. That speed is a requirement for any device that purports to straddle the line between work and play. The MacBook Air comes with either an 11.6-inch screen or a 13.3-inch model. It&'s only 0.68 inches thick at the thickest part and just 0.11 inches at its thinnest. It weighs 2.9 pounds, but it&'s made out of solid aluminum so it&'s sturdy. The size matters because you can carry it around and it won&'t give you a backache. The FaceTime video phone app lets you call people with an iPhone 4 and chat with live video. It&'s beautiful enough that people will stop and ask you about it. So it can&'t be bad for your social life either.8. Sony PlayStation Move (Sony. $49 and up). The PlayStation Move is Sony&'s big bet on motion controls. Based on our interview with motion-control guru Richard Marks, Sony didn&'t think that 3D motion cameras, such as those used in Kinect, were ready for prime time. Instead, Sony stuck with a wand-like device you hold in your hand. It has traditional buttons, but it also has a variety of tracking sensors &8212' a light bulb, an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a compass &8212' that give it pinpoint accuracy in tracking where your hand is moving. As such, it could prove to be much more accurate than either the Nintendo Wii or the Kinect. So far, Sony has a good combination of hardcore and casual games for the Move. But it lacks a killer application to really make the device sell. We&'re not sure if Sony stretched far enough to go beyond Nintendo and to match Microsoft with the Move. If you&'re a Sony fan, this could be your best purchase for the holidays. But Microsoft&'s Kinect will probably stretch the imagination farther with its no-controller motion-sensing system. With Move, you get a better experience if you hold two controllers in your hand, and you also have to have a PlayStation Eye camera. When you add up all of those costs, you could spend $130 or more on the whole system.9. Samsung Galaxy S (Samsung. $199 with two-year contract from AT&amp'T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint) Out of nowhere, Samsung unleashed some of the most compelling Android smartphones ever seen &8212' and it also had an ambitious plan to bring them to all major US carriers. Samsung&'s Galaxy S phones aren&'t the fastest or most fully featured Android phones out there, but they are a happy medium between mainstream Android handsets, and monstrously large phones like the Evo 4G. All of the Galaxy S phones feature a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, which is by far the brightest cellphone display available, and run Samsung&'s 1 gigahertz Hummingbird processor. If you&'re having trouble choosing an Android phone at the moment, it&'s hard to go wrong with any of the Galaxy S options. And yes, even iPhone 4 owners will be envious.10. Nook Color (Barnes and Noble. $249) Just when you thought Barnes and Noble&'s Nook e-reader was in serious trouble &8212' given the new Kindle&'s better display and cheaper price &8212' the company unleashed the shockingly inexpensive Nook Color, a device that appears to be part e-reader, part tablet, and all Android. The Nook Color drops the E-Ink display of the original and instead opts for a 7-inch touchscreen LCD display. It&'s half the price of the iPad, and more portable to boot. It&'s also a better option for younger kids, as it&'s far more rugged than Apple&'s tablet. It&'s not a genuine Android tablet, since it won&'t run Android apps, but B&amp'N says it will let developers create apps specifically for the Nook Color. We still prefer the Kindle for pure text reading, but if you&'re interested in electronic magazines, or a way to enjoy colorful children&'s e-books, the Nook Color is by far one of the best values this season.Front photo via Mat PackerNext Story: Crisis management by firing executives a4" and why thata4a4s futile Previous Story: Delicious founder raises $3M to put a4Athe useful back in social softwarea4PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Galaxy S, iOS, iPad, iPhone, iPhone 4, kindle, Kinect, Macbook Air, MicroConsole, Nook Color, OnLive, Playstation Move, Roku XD, smartphones, tablets, xbox 360Companies: Amazon, Apple, Barnes And Noble, Microsoft, OnLive, Roku, Samsung, Sony Tags: Android, Galaxy S, iOS, iPad, iPhone, iPhone 4, kindle, Kinect, Macbook Air, MicroConsole, Nook Color, OnLive, Playstation Move, Roku XD, smartphones, tablets, xbox 360Companies: Amazon, Apple, Barnes And Noble, Microsoft, OnLive, Roku, Samsung, SonyVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters. I realize this post may be the beginning of a slippery slope of relentless pitches from Scandinavians that ends up with someone breaking into my house to bring me a pitch and a latte. But what the hell I like lattes and TechCrunch was a site built on giving exposure to persistent, gutsy entrepreneurs building things because they wanted them to exist in the world and the series of very persistent pitches from Peter Sullivan of Vacation Relation epitomized that. So I did one better than a post and invited Sullivan on TechCrunchTV to talk about his company. Running on fumes from three days coding and no sleep, he didn&'t disappoint.Vacation Relation is another attempt to make travel social. While some other sites focus on connecting friends who happen to be in the same location, Vacation Relation focuses on connecting like-minded people who don&'t necessarily know each other but like to do the same things and are the same age, looking for cool people to hang out with all around the world. Asking a total stranger to be your friend was awkward in kindergarten and it&'s awkward when you&'re in your 20s on a cruise with your family too.The hardest problem Vacation Relation will have to solve is getting enough people to sign up that people can actually find someone their own age who surfs and will be in Rio next week. The site uses Facebook&'s APIs to take out the pain of creating a new profile, user ID and password and make signing up as easy as possible. It is also partnering with a handful of tourism boards to send people to the site, focusing on places like Vegas and Spring Break hubs where people are more likely to want to mix and mingle. It&'s also creating a white-label solution for companies like cruise lines.Another challenge: Building a startup in Sweden. But it&'s not as hard as you&'d think, Sullivan argues. He moved from San Francisco to Sweden for the free education and &''hot women on bicycles,&'' but he&'s stayed to build this company there because of a lot of support and benefits the community has given him. Other countries worried about an entrepreneurial brain drain should pay attention.TipTweet

0 Vote(s)

Following on the heels of Vizio&'s surprising Android phone and tablet announcement, the company is also revealing that it&'s bringing Android to the living room with its new Google TV-powered VIA Plus HDTVs and Blu-ray players, and it&'s readying a new 3D line. What&'s most surprising about VIA Plus is that it doesn&'t look like Google TV at all. Judging from the screenshots we&'ve seen, it looks like Vizio has created a widget-based Skin for Google TV that resembles Yahoo&'s Connected TV apps (which the company uses for its older VIA HDTV line). VIA Plus will also allow consumers to pause and resume content across multiple devices, including VIA phones and tablets.HTC and other companies have developed different user interfaces for Android mobile devices, but this is the first time we&'ve seen how malleable the Android-powered Google TV platform can be. Both Sony and Logitech have already released Google TV products with its default user interface. We reported a few weeks ago that Google asked TV partners to delay showing off their products at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, so that leaves Vizio with one of the few GTV-related announcements.Additionally, Vizio is also introducing a line of &''Theater 3D&'' HDTV sets that range from 22 to 71-inches and feature support for passive 3D glasses. Unlike competing HDTV sets that require powered 3D glasses, Vizio&'s Theater 3D line will process 3D in the TV set, allowing consumers to use passive and unpowered 3D glasses like those used in most movie theaters. Passive glasses are cheaper than active 3D glasses, and I suspect we&'ll see even more TV manufacturers making use of them this year. Most of the Theater 3D HDTVs will feature Vizio&'s VIA app platform, which is powered by Yahoo&'s widgets. Two Theater 3D models (at 47 and 55-inches) will feature VIA Plus instead.Via Engadget 1, 2Next Story: Is mobile payments startup Square worth $200M Previous Story: Smart TV&'s sell big globally, not so much in the U.S.PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Google TV, HDTVs, TVs, Via, VIA PlusCompanies: Google, Vizio Tags: Android, Google TV, HDTVs, TVs, Via, VIA PlusCompanies: Google, VizioDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
AT&amp'T made a strong showing in its last quarter of 2010. The carrier announced its earnings today (PDF link) and revealed that it added 2.8 new wireless customers in the last quarter and sold 4.1 million iPhones.AT&amp'T saw revenues of $31.4 billion (up $653 million from last year) with 9.9 percent growth in wireless revenues and a 9.6 percent increase in wireless service revenues. Last quarter marked the first time ever that AT&amp'Ta4a4s wireless revenues exceeded its wired revenues. In total, AT&amp'T now has 95.3 million wireless subscribers. In comparison, Verizon reported earlier this week that it ended 2010 with 94.1 million wireless customers. The carrier also sold 442,000 tablets &8212' including the iPad and some Android tablets &8212' and added more than 1.5 million connected devices to its network. Wireless churn, or the number of subscribers switching to other carriers, was the lowest ever for a fourth quarter at 1.32 percent. We suspect that number to look very different the next time around for AT&amp'T, since ita4a4s losing exclusivity of the iPhone next month to Verizon.Next Story: Umair Haque on the tech industry&'s &''thin value problem&'' Previous Story: Deals &038' More: Plum District grabs $8.5M to save moms money, Korrio scores $3.3M to help sports leaguesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: earnings, iPad, iPhone, smartphones, tablets, wirelessCompanies: AT&amp'T Tags: earnings, iPad, iPhone, smartphones, tablets, wirelessCompanies: AT&amp'TDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
