Well, it's about time.Boxee announced today that Netflix streaming is finally available to owners of the company's Boxee Box. In order to access Netflix streaming, users will need to either wait for the automatic update to take effect within the next 24 hours or manually update their set-top boxes."Netflix support was the most common request we had on our blog comments, forum posts, tweets, etc.," Boxee CEO Avner Ronen said in a blog post accompanying the announcement. "We heard you loud and clear. We were bummed that we could not make it happen earlier, but are very excited to have it out today."When the Boxee Box first launched in November, the company said that it would make Netflix available by the end of 2010. After hitting some snags, it promised that Netflix was "still on track" for a launch at the end of January. Earlier this month, Boxee said in a blog post that it wasn't able to hit its self-imposed deadline because it had "not yet satisfied Netflix's security requirements."Luckily, that wait is finally over. But now Boxee has some catching up to do. Netflix streaming has been running for quite some time on several of the device's competitors, including the Apple TV, Roku set-top boxes, and the Logitech Revue, among others.

0 Vote(s)

The sun may be in youriPhone battery's future.Yesterday, Apple received Patent No. 7,868,582 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for powering electronics partially with solar power. The patent, which was originally filed in 2009, describes a system of using a solar panel for charging different portable devices, including a notebook computer, tablet, phone, or other handheld gadget.A diagram from Apple's new patent.(Credit:Screen capture by Martin LaMonica/CNET)It specifically deals with converting the power from a solar panel to meet the power requirements of electronics. The system includes a voltage converter that ensures the available solar power can be converted and used to recharge batteries. The solar panel could either be embedded in the device or be removable, according to the patent.Although Apple has not yet released any solar-powered gadgets, it's clear that the company is interested in letting people use sunlight to charge when they can't get to an AC outlet. It's the fourth patent that Apple has received related to solar power, according to Patently Apple. There are already a number of third-party solar chargers designed for Apple equipment. Solar charger makers say that Apple products are particularly demanding in terms of the quality of power needed to effectively use solar panels.Apple has taken a number of steps to make its product more environmentally friendly by phasing out toxic chemicals and using recyclable aluminum in its products. Last year, it also released a line of rechargeable batteries that it says will last longer and are more energy efficient than others.

0 Vote(s)

Now you can figure out which side of the mall Bloomingdale&39's is on. Wait a minute...(Credit:Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Malls are, by their very nature, quite large, and while that lends itself well to a diversified retail experience, it can also be overwhelming, if you're visiting one for the first time (like in a new city) and don't know the layout. To that end, Bing now maps out which stores are inside of malls instead of just placing a map marker on the building itself. Similar to satellite imagery when viewing Bing Maps on a mobile device or in the Bing Maps beta, the mall layer pops up only when you're at a certain zoom level. You can then click on any of the listed stores to get information like its address and telephone number. In a post on Bing's Maps blog, Bing Maps product manager Brian Hendricks says the new system should make it easier for people to figure out where to park and speed up the Holiday shopping process. Oddly enough, this level of detail is not yet available on the mobile version of Bing Maps, which would obviously be quite helpful, if you decide you want to head to a mall while away from a computer. In a statement e-mailed to CNET, Microsoft said this new layer is just the first step of the feature and that adding it to mobile devices is a "priority." So far, the feature has been launched for just a handful of malls, with the majority being located in Washington state, as well as two in New York and one in Boston. Here's hoping that the next big update adds a StreetSide view to let you virtually wander around the inside of malls.

0 Vote(s)

If connected to a smart grid, the OPower software can provide detailed information on energy usage and then generate recommendations on how to reduce specific items, such as air conditioning load.OPower, a company that offers home energy efficiency recommendations to consumers through utilities, has brought in $50 million in venture capital. The Arlington, Va.-based company said yesterday that the round was led by Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers and Accel Partners, with existing investor New Enterprise Associates also participating. Since its founding in 2007, OPower has raised $65.5 million. With the money, OPower plans to hire more people and build out its Web-based software system to introduce more features to consumers and utilities next year, said CEO Dan Yates. There have been dozens of companies trying to build a business around giving consumers tools to save energy, with many designing home energy monitors. OPower has made a name for itself by first offering paper reports that tell consumers how their energy use compares with households like theirs. People can also go to a utility-hosted Web site to view their energy data and recommendations for efficiency. Next year, the company plans to improve its software in an effort to increase consumer energy savings, Yates said. Right now, the average energy reduction is on the order of 2 or 3 percent, which when aggregated over many homes is significant to utilities that have an incentive to improve customers' efficiency.OPower also intends to build out its software service to give utilities more tools for communicating with consumers as utilities introduce smart meters and demand-response programs, Yates said. The company is now working with 45 utilities in the U.S.

0 Vote(s)

Welcome to Death/Star, a new show we are testing on TechCrunch TV. It&'s a product review show with a twist. My co-host, CrunchGear editor John Biggs, and I give our opinions on three hot products. In the inaugural episode we cover the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tablet, photo-sharing app Instagram, and the Boxee Box.To spice things up, we try to go beyond the traditional thumbs up/thumbs down to predict whether each product will end up in the graveyard (in which case we mark it for death) or become a bona fide hit (in which case we give it a star). Hence, the name: Death/Star. A surprise guest appears at the end and punks Biggs (the look on his face is classic). The idea behind the show is not to do full reviews. You can read our previous review posts for the Galaxy Tab, Instagram (see more posts), and Boxee Box (see also demo video and CEO Avner Ronen interview). It is to evaluate each product&'s chances for success and survival. The full 7-minute episode is above, but we also broke it up into three shorter video segments below for each of the products. We shot the show at one of AOL&'s video studios in New York City, and they helped us with the editing as well. Please tell us how you like the show in comments, what products you&'d like to see us review next time, and any suggestions for making it better.Samsung Galaxy Tab segmentInstagram segmentBoxee Box segmentCrunchBase InformationBoxeeInstagramSamsung ElectronicsInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

If Pablo Picasso or Belgian surrealist, Ren Magritte, were alive and on Facebook, their profiles would probably be a terrific work of art. Yes, that&'s right, Magritte is the one who did this painting. With a little inspiration from the Treachery of Images, I bet he&'d also write something along the lines of &''This is not a Facebook profile&'' or &''Ceci n&'est pas un profil Facebook&'' somewhere on his Facebook page.Yet, while Picasso and Magritte may not be around to wow us with a little contemporary Facebook art, the profile of French artista4sAlexandre Oudin is probably the next best thing. The Co-Director of La Bande Originale managed to maximize the new Facebook design released officially last week in order to express himself in a rather innovative and original way. While Facebook&'s simple blue and white layout is sometimes a little less funky than what one could find on other social platforms, like MySpace&'s over-the-top personalization options and whatnot, Oudin has clearly demonstrated that there are still creative ways to express yourself on Facebook.I wouldn&'t be surprised if his unique way of using notably the 5 images now displayed on the top of a profile page becomes a hit with other users or sets off a wave of other innovative profile picture displays. For anyone who wants to copy his style, all you have to do is block the other photos you&'re tagged in and upload photos to your profile pictures album that are the exact size (yes, down to the pixel) of the display on Facebook and voil !Check out some more cool, Alexandre Oudin-like designs featured on TechCrunch France. If anyone else out there has an artsy profile going on, feel free to send it my way.*Thanks to Moop Design for the tip !

0 Vote(s)

Seemingly out of nowhere, the content guide and copy protection specialist Rovi announced tonight that it intends to acquire digital media company Sonic Solutions, maker of the popular Roxio media creation software, for $720 million. The deal lands Rovi, formerly known as Macrovision, with a slew of consumer-level products and technologies &8212' something it&'s traditionally avoided. Thus far, Rovi has been known for focusing on the business end of media with offerings like programming guides for service providers, anti-piracy protection for content producers and a digital content solution for online stores and portals. In addition to Sonic Solution&'s Roxio software, the company also has RoxioNow, a cloud-based digital media service with over 10,000 movies and TV shows. In its press release, Rovi says that RoxioNow is expected to be in 30 million connected devices by June 2011. RoxioNow also drives Best Buy&'s digital video service, as well as other major retailers.Rovi will also gain access to the DivX digital video software and player, which Sonic Solutions acquired earlier this year. The company says that Divx&'s software has been downloaded 100 million times this year and 500 million times in total. DivX software is currently available on over 350 million consumer electronics devices. As GigaOm&'s Ryan Lawler points out, the acquisition may finally let Rovi bring its programming guide technology, dubbed TotalGuide, to consumer electronics devices. Rovi already announced that Blockbuster&'s on demand video service is using TotalGuide, but it has yet to announce any other customers. BlockBuster&'s service, it should be noted, is pretty much run by Sonic Solutions since it relies heavily on RoxioNow.Rovi changed its name from Macrovision last year &8212' a name that was commonly associated with digital rights management software and copyright protection technology for the past three decades.Previous Story: Google buys New York office building for $1.9BPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: digital video, Divx, Roxio, RoxioNowCompanies: Rovi, Sonic Solutions Tags: digital video, Divx, Roxio, RoxioNowCompanies: Rovi, Sonic SolutionsDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
