(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)Last year, Infiniti released the M56x, its top sedan loaded with a big displacement V-8. Thatcar offered the power one would expect from a luxury sedan, but the engine was caveman technology. This year, Infiniti shows it can do high-tech motive power equal to the level of tech in its cabins. The M35h hybrid couples Infiniti's tried and true V-6 with a next-generation hybrid power system using lithium ion batteries. The M35h drives exceptionally well, running in EV mode over a wide range of speeds. The hybrid system boosts power substantially over that of the gas engine alone. Although fuel economy doesn't reach the highs of a Toyota Prius, it is exceptional for a luxury sedan. Add to that Infiniti's innovative driver assistance features, and the car is one high-tech roller.Read our review of the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid.

0 Vote(s)

The new Related tab is at the top right.(Credit:AndroidCentral)Google quietly ushered in another new Android Market feature today with the integration of a "related" tab. Designed to aid in application and game discovery, the tab lists apps that are related to the title that you're currently viewing. For example, when browsing Google Sky Map, related titles include astronomy, lunar, and satellite titles. Depending on carrier or handset, the tab may be called "similar" instead of "related."The feature is just the latest in a series of small moves that will add up to a much improved Android Market experience. For example, last month saw the implementation of additional graphics, YouTube videos, recent change logs, and content ratings. The next release of Android, Gingerbread or OS 2.3, is widely expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks. The redesigned Market is among the many rumored changes that Gingerbreaf should bring to the platform. Judging by the new features and options, users will have plenty at their disposal to learn more about apps and discover content that may have been otherwise missed. The related tabs has not been formally announced by Google, so it's hard to say exactly what version(s) of Android is required. My instinct tells me it is for 2.2 and above, as that's the going trend with recent apps from Google. Maps and Gmail have both seen updates that require Froyo in order to take advantage of the new features.

0 Vote(s)

Anonymous, a group of online hackers that frequently take up politically charged causes such as bringing down the websites for Visa and other credit card companies, hasreleased a massive batch of internal Bank of America emails. It looks like the hacker group, which frequents online message board 4chan, made good on a promise Wikileaks founder Julian Assange made several months ago. Anonymous sided with Assange when several sites and services like PayPal cut ties with Wikileaks&'enigmaticfounder amid concerns about the legality of the site. Assange and Wikileaks indicated that they planned to publish the documents in December. But that was then a4" before Assange was arrested on suspicion of sexual offenses in December. Wikileaks began making headlines after it released 251,000 secret U.S. state department documents. The site created a stir among world governments, who have denounced the sitea4a4s actions, and it wasbooted by its domain name service provider EveryDNS. Assange and the sie also had theiraccounts suspended fromAmazona4a4s S3 and EC2 online cloud hosting services andPayPal.Anonymous&' host site for the internal emails has received enough traffic to bring it to its knees. VentureBeat reporters were unable to access the site shortly after the documents were posted. Errors indicated that the site had crashed due to a traffic overload a4" which kind of ironic after Anonymous coordinated massive direct denial of service (DDoS) attacks on other sites that are designed to send inordinate amounts of traffic and overload servers. The documents indicate that Bank of America improperly foreclosed on several homes during the height of the financial crisis in 2008 that began one of the worst recessions since the great depression. The report came from a former employee with Balboa Insurance a4" a risk management and insurance firm. The employee reportedly corresponded with Bank of America employees and was told to falsify loan numbers on documents to force Bank of America to foreclose on homeowners.Previous Story: Japanese earthquake rocks online gamesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Anonymous, Julian Assange, leaked emailsCompanies: 4chan, Bank of America, WikiLeaks Tags: Anonymous, Julian Assange, leaked emailsCompanies: 4chan, Bank of America, WikiLeaksMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Hewlett-Packard will be bringing Palm&'s WebOS mobile operating system to PCs sometime later this year, said Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP&'s personal systems group.Details are almost non-existent about what this move by HP will actually look like. But Apple made a similar move, bringing some features from its mobile operating system iOS to its desktop operating system. Lion, for example, features additional multi-touch gestures and some other features present on Apple&'s iPhone operating system. The move makes sense, given that HP has a number of touch-enabled desktop computers and an app store for touch-based applications on desktops. Bradley said additional details would come throughout the year. The announcement came at the end of HP&'s presentation in San Francisco today, where the company unveiled two new smartphones and an impressive WebOS-powered tablet.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: Electric car charger Coulomb gets new CEO, Gevo&'s biofuels shares rise Previous Story: HPa4a4s WebOS TouchPad reveals iPada4a4s multitasking weaknessesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: HP Pre 3, HP Veer, Palm Pre, TouchPad, webOSCompanies: HP, PalmPeople: Todd Bradley Tags: HP Pre 3, HP Veer, Palm Pre, TouchPad, webOSCompanies: HP, PalmPeople: Todd BradleyMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
It was inevitable, developer Jesse Stay has built a waya4s&''Like&'' tweets on the Twitter homepage. The winner of Kynetx&'s Facebook App contest, Stay&'s browser plugin uses Facebook&'s iframe code to give you the option to &''Like&'' in addition to &''Retweet,&''"Favorite,&'' and &''Reply to&'' Tweets on Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox. Just install the extension and the buttons show up when you hover over the tweet in your stream. Well if Twitter wasn&'t going to do it &8230'&''Liked&'' tweets will also get posted to your Facebook profile and are a defacto way to share your favorite posts on Twitter with your social graph. Stay plans on further customizing Twitter to integrate with Facebook through plugins and is working on a &''post to Facebook&'' checkbox below Twitter status update box as well as Twitter and Facebook profile pic synchronization.Around 65 million people currently &''Like&'' stuff online daily. As the universal Internet &''Like&'' button evolved out of the Facebook status update, it&'s inevitable that the &''Like&'' disease would somehow spread to Twitter status updates as well, especially since the end result is more traffic for everyone involved. You can download the plugins here.CrunchBase InformationTwitterFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Something is up on the Facebook vs. Google data reciprocity front. It looks like Facebook is removing Gmail from the list of third party email providers on a4s&''Find Friends&'', whereas we were seeing direct link downloads to Gmail contacts still offered as an option just a couple of days ago.It gets stranger. Some new users who sign up with their Gmail accounts can still see the option to add friends from Gmail, but when I tried to import contacts I got the below &''Everyone on this contact list is already on Facebook or has already been invited&'' message. In other words it didn&'t work.Signing up with a non-Gmail account eliminates the option entirely even though you still have the capability to manually download and upload your contact files.

Andy Sjarif has an almost weird, man-crush on Google. No matter what crazy things Eric Schmidt may promise shareholders, Sjarif is in no doubt that the great and mighty Google can achieve them. Self-driving cars Trips to the moon Wind farms All in a day&'s work at the Googleplex. Google with its execution, its Ph.Ds and its algorithms is Sjarif&'s mahaguru. But &8211' all that said &8211' he still wants to slaughter them in the Indonesian market. To that end, his company Sitti has indexed more than 20 terabytes of data' comprising 12 million articles, 12 million Twitter accounts, 800 million pages of websites and blogs, 10 million Facebook conversations, 20 thousand words of slang and 2.7 billion Google search terms&8211' all in Bahasa Indonesia and all to make mathematical sense of Bahasa language context, so that it can match ads to content better than Google.Google has been supporting an Indonesian language version of Chrome for a few months, but it only launched Adwords and announced it was ready to serve the market October 8&8230' about a week aftera4sSitti just launched a trial of its contextual ad engine consisting of that consisted of 2,700 individual ads for 529 brands.a4sIt must be doing something right' not only did Google come into the market almost immediately but, the day after the campaign launched, Google bought the keyword in Bahasa for &''Sitti.&'' See the screenshot, grabbed by Sjarif below.A few weeks later, Google sent a team to Indonesia and held dozens of job interviews. Sjarif claims a few candidates were told that Google was going to crush the small upstart. They are said to be hiring a local team of about a dozen employees in 2011.Of course, the timing could all be coincidence.a4sIndonesia is a hot market that, as I&'ve argued before,a4sonly a fool would completely ignore. But, if nothing else, it certainly makes Sitti look good to the locals. There&'s that nationalistic pride issue of Google making more than anyone else when it comes to Indonesian Web advertising, but not employing many locals and not paying much in local taxes. Sitti is undoubtably a gnat in the Google universe. But every once in a while, a gnat gets your attention and you swat at it, rightWhether he helped provoke it or not, Sjarif is thrilled Google is coming into the market, because he thinks it&'ll drive more professionalism, attention and revenues for the ecosystem as a whole. Google Adsense tailored for Indonesia means local Web companies can better bootstrap companies with Google ads, the way the early Web 2.0 wave of companies in the United States did. The two could co-exist the same way mass players like Google and more tailored ad networks like Federated Media did for US startups.Google brings heft to the market, but it will never get as deep into the nuances Bahasa indexing as Sitti is. Sitti cites the example of ZAO Begun in Russia, which Google tried to buy for $140 million before it was blocked by the Russian government, as evidence that language can be a powerful differentiator on the Web.More than a year ago, Sjarif tried to raise funding from Valley VCs and one very well-heeled one he asked me not to name said, &''It&'s not that your technology isn&'t hot, it&'s the fact that you&'re here. In the Valley, people would be fighting over you.&'' So Sitti raised money from a handful of local angels instead. They were offline moguls who didn&'t know a thing about the Web, but backed him anyway. This is a running theme among Jakarta Web companies I met this past trip. Knowing the big families is important as entrepreneurs shape a new industry in a country with infrastructure issues and little local venture capital. One of these angels called him the day after he committed the money and said, &''Andy, do two things for me. The first is don&'t die, because this is going to be big. Now, explain to me what you do.&''Indonesians complain about a lack of sophisticated Web expertise and mentorship, but it&'s one of the only emerging markets where I don&'t hear complaints about a dearth of angel money. Sitti&'s angels have given the company a long leash, deep pockets and helped open doors to the country&'s old media elite. Sjarif now turns down traditional venture firm money, bootstrapping the company&'s growth by giving big brands local media consulting advice for digital campaigns. &''I want to talk to VCs when I don&'t need their money,&'' he says. Smart plan. Venture money can come and go quickly in markets that don&'t have a track record of returns. But back to the product. Sjarif is so deep into how, when, where and what Indonesians say on the Web that he can tell you a lot about this phenomenon. He says three things drive the Indonesians love affair with Tweeting and Foursquare for instance: They&'re narcassists' they love to gossip about one another (more than celebrities, unlike the US) and they get bored during urban traffic jams. He says he can map the traffic flows in Jakarta based on the volume of Tweets he indexes at any given time. Here&'s a visualization Sitti did of part of my Bahasan Twitter connections, created in part to embarrass me at an event. In true polite Indonesian style there was little embarrassing on it, except for the fact that ARRINGTON is the biggest hub on this map. And, what the hell is Mashable even doing on there I might get fired for that if the big yellow dot ARRINGTON sees it. Interesting that @katharnavas in India is the same size dot as @arrington. Thanks for the links, whoever you are. The yellow dots are my connections' the red dots are connections to them or connections with smaller networks that have mentioned me' and the size of the dot indicates how frequently. And this is a relation of most common words associated with &''Sarah Lacy&'' into Google.co.id&'s engine:It&'s certainly different than the words most related to me in an English-language search. It seems in Indonesia, haters don&'t gotta hate quite as much. Good to know. The company also did a visualization of topics on my personal blog and conversations over Twitter they&'ve indexed that relate to me.Sitti wasn&'t the only company I met trying to build a business out of social media sentiment in markets that were ignored by companies like Google up until recently. There are several companies in Asia generally seeking to make sense out of the wave of pages being created on the Web in Asian languages in order to turn all that traffic into actual cash. Since, most of those pages are being created over social media, it takes a company that can understand slang, context, and meaning in just 140 characters. And a lot of these companies put the Valley&'s self-proclaimed &''social media consultants&'' to shame with highly scientific and proprietary approaches. Two very different examples are Brandtology in Singapore and Scraplr in Indonesia. Brandtology promises toa4s make better sense of what social media is saying about a brand by hiring an army of smart college grads to sit and parse queries so the machines don&'t mis-read things like sarcasm and local slang. While, I&'m sympathetic to the idea that there are certain things an algorithm doesn&'t get, the economics of this company didn&'t quite sense, and didn&'t quite hold up the more questions I asked. How do you hire enough college-educated locals to filter all those keywords and still have a cost-effective solution The answer is it&'s not a free product. It costs between $1,000 and $10,000 a month depending on what percentage of keywords you want examined. Without paying extra, you don&'t really get better relevance. I&'m not sure that scales as the cost of talent rises.Scraplr takes a totally algorithmic approach, that is specifically tailored to Bahasa, not emerging market languages broadly. Because it takes a machine-only approach it has a freemium model. That means more people can see how good the site is, but making money will be a bigger challenge. There is probably room for all three, as long as they perform as advertised. Indonesia and social media are both black boxes the West is struggling to understand.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft is launching its Windows Phone 7 software today on nine new smartphones from Dell, HTC, and Samsung. One of the key features is the ability to access your Xbox Live account via the phone&'s menu.Xbox Live has its own hub within the phone&'s user interface. That&'s important because it differentiates Microsoft&'s Windows Phone 7 phones from all the others in the market now, including the iPhone. You tap on the Xbox Live icon and it takes you to your Xbox Live account avatar, or character, with your gamerscore number and gamertag name. You can view the library of games you have on the phone, including Xbox Live-enabled titles, as well as recommended &''spotlight&'' titles. In that respect, the Xbox Live feature is great for discovering new content. On top of that, you can download a new feature called Xbox Live Extras, which will let you edit your profile or change your avatar&'s clothes to anything else that you have in your avatar&'s closet on your Xbox Live account.
We&'ve heard rumors that some of you play an informal &''Guess what TechCrunch writer wrote the post based the headline&'' gamea4swith Twitter and your RSS readers. Now former TechCrunch developer Andy Brett (with some help from in-house rabble rouser Paul Carr) has done everyone a solid and built an entire site devoted to trying to figure who writes what. While you might think beating CrunchHunch is as easy as guessing MG for all the Apple stuff and me for all the misspelled stuff, you&'d be surprised. And speaking of surprises.CrunchBase InformationAndy BrettTechCrunchInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Last Wednesday, I got my hands on a new Meisterstck Le Grand Traveller pen. I havena4a4t touched my MacBook Pro since. Ita4a4s twelve months old. RIP.Stop. Take a deep breath. Before my opening paragraph gets you all worked up, consider what Ia4a4m saying here. Ia4a4m saying that my TechCrunch options just cashed out and Ia4a4ve just used some of the money to buy an awesome new pen. And ita4a4s beautiful. And I want to write a post all about how awesome and beautiful it is.No &8211' wait &8211' Ia4a4ve just looked back at that lede, and youa4a4re right. I am saying more than that. Ia4a4m saying that my new pen is so perfect in every way that my purchasing it spells the inevitable end of my MacBook. Whata4a4s more, I genuinely and unironically believe that the awesomeness of my pen is such that its halo effect will render your MacBook &8211' and those of everyone you hold dear &8211' useless as well. But, still, hear me out.In the next few hundred words Ia4a4ll explain all of the myriad reasons why my new Meisterstck Le Grand Traveller &8211' a snip at just shy of $800 (inc tax and ink) &8211' is superior in every way to my $1200 Mac Book Pro. And when youa4a4ve finished reading, Ia4a4m confident that you too will want to trade in your clunky old laptop for this masterpiece of German manufacturing. If you don&'t, Ia4a4ll eat my power cable. After all, I dona4a4t need it any more.I mean, seriously, did I mention how amazing my freaking pen isNow, I know what youa4a4re thinking. Youa4a4re thinking a4Abut the Meisterstck has been around since 1924 and it hasna4a4t killed the MacBook yeta4. Thata4a4s true, but until this week I hadna4a4t bought one. Now that I have, and now that Ia4a4ve written this post about it, surely we can all agree that ita4a4s only a matter of time before the streets are filled with the smell of burning aluminum and glass while former bloggers look on, describing the scenes in their diaries using shiny black fountain pens. But I&'m getting ahead of myself: leta4a4s make a side by side comparison&8230'My MacBook Pro is 14.35 wide and weighs 5.6lbs. The Meisterstck Le Grand How about 4.2 inches long and less than a pound in weight. Unbelievable. Of course much of that size difference is down to the lack of a hard drive or battery or any electronic parts in the Meisterstck, but that just adds to its awesomeness. Also, when my MacBook gets warm it sounds like a jetplane taking off &8211' my Meisterstck Ita4a4s literally silent, even when ita4a4s operating at full speed. No one believes me when I tell them that, but ita4a4s true. And how about battery life My MacBook manages a decent 3-4 hours on a full charge, but compare that to the Meisterstck: Ia4a4ve been carrying it around in my pocket for five days &8211' using it constantly &8211' and I havena4a4t had to plug it in once. Montblanc are killing it with this pen!But therea4a4s more! When you get your Meisterstck and remove the cap, you will find exactly zero keys inside. My MacBook has 78! In the Meisterstck all of those have been replaced with a single nib, capable of producing not just letters and numbers but also signs, shapes and runes. For a writer like me, thata4a4s gold! (Note: the nib is actually gold) To be honest, I feel a bit silly having carried around all those keys for so long &8211' the truth is, there are at least 10% that I havena4a4t ever used. I mean whata4a4s the a4A^a4 even forOk, so thata4a4s hardware: how about applications Of course, this is where the MacBook should have the edge: after all, with my MacBook Ia4a4m able to listen to music, write and send documents and use social media tools like Twitter. Surely my Meisterstck cana4a4t compete with all thatYou wanna betHere I am, not just listening to music, but ACTUALLY PLAYING IT&8230'.Twitter No problem! And how about writing and mailing documents, or publishing blog posts Well, ok, I admit thata4a4s a little slower with the Meisterstck. I started writing this column shortly after MG published his anthology of love poems to his new MacBook Air, and it would definitely have been funnier if Ia4a4d been able to publish sooner &8211' but first I had to write it longhand&8230'.&8230'..then mail it to AOL to be transcribed&8230'.&8230'.the wait for it to be published. But, as any MacBook Air user will tell you, sometimes you have to take a few technological steps backward in order to make a giant leap forward. And those leaps just go on and on: my Meisterstck has a pocket clip, a removable cap and a brass insert capable of holding two ink cartridges (along with the six spares kept in the leather carry pouch). I called Apple a few hours ago and asked if ANY ONE of these features was on their roadmap for the MacBook. They hung up on me, but I think we all know the answer! Yeah &8211' Rest In Pieces, MacBook! With my purchase of a Moleskine notebook three years ago, I put the wheels in motion to kill my MacBook. This week, by purchasing an awesome pen, I kicked off my final assault. There will be no survivors. Now if youa4a4ll excuse us, my pen and I are heading to Hawaii for a few days of a4Acouple timea4 away from all you lameos and your tired old a4Acrap booksa4. Try not to be too jealous when you see my pen gliding through the x-ray machine without me having to remove it from its case!See you in the future, suckers!

0 Vote(s)
