(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)Scary things lurk in the closets and attics of laptop fans everywhere. With an average lifespan of three to five years, old obsolete models can gather dust for a long time, and can be as hard to get rid of as the annoying bloatware that probably came preloaded on those very same laptops. Old features we do and don't miss on modern laptops (photos) While spring cleaning, your two intrepid laptop reviewers dug up a pile of old laptops from circa 2001-2006--a motley collection straight out of Al Component's Vault. Fortunately, there are several good ways to recycle outdated electronics, from Best Buy's in-store drop-off program to periodic free electronics collection events hosted by NYC's Lower East Side Ecology Center. The City of New York lists resources for local electronics recycling here' check with your municipality for similar resources in your area. (And yes, most will even take things as shopworn as Scott's battle-damaged PowerBook G4.)Hey, got any old PS/2 mice(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)But before we remove the hard drives and send these old laptops into the great beyond, it's worth a look at the various features that have vanished from most modern laptops. Most of these are things we don't really miss, such as S-Video ports and locking screen latches, but there are a few things we wouldn't mind seeing make a comeback. Check out our list of retired laptop features here, and let us know what you miss--or don't miss--when comparing yesteryear's laptops to today's models.

0 Vote(s)

Availability of theiPad 2 at Apple Stores appears to be easing a bit, as some stores in Southern California are not selling out of stock before the doors open. At Apple stores on a typical day, lines form as early as 3 a.m.--or earlier. In response, stores open early and pass out claim tickets to those in line. But there are typically more people in line than there are available claim tickets. So, stores sell out before the doors open for regular business. The line extends to the vanishing point in the photo.(Credit:Brooke Crothers)For the first time on Tuesday morning, however, some stores in Los Angeles had enough inventory to sell an iPad to everyone in line then open their doors and still have stock to sell to walk-in customers. Two stores, one at The Grove in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and another in Simi Valley, briefly had stock during regular business hours, according to salespeople at those two stores. Alas, that doesn't mean that circumstances have changed for the chronically sold out iPad 2 everywhere in California. An Apple Store in San Francisco says it still sells out before doors open for regular business and that people were already in getting in line at around 2:30 p.m. PST on Tuesday for Wednesday sales, according to a store salesperson. After international sales begin this Friday, we should have a better idea next week if this is a fluke or if supply is actually stabilizing.

0 Vote(s)

The elusive whiteiPhone should finally surface this spring, at least according to someone who should know.(Credit:Apple)Responding to a question from 16-year-old Twitter user Eric Anderson asking how to get the white iPhone, Apple's vice president of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, tweeted yesterday that the phone would be available this spring. And in Schiller's opinion, the new phone is a "beauty."The tale of the white iPhone has been a long and mysterious one since last June's debut of the iPhone 4.Pointing to a delay caused by manufacturing problems, Apple initially said the white version would be available in July. When July came, Apple was forced to push the launch date until later in 2010, admitting that the white handset was proving more "challenging to manufacture than we originally expected." Then in October, Apple announced yet another postponement, this time pushing back the phone's appearance until this coming spring.Apple hasn't given any specific reasons for the ongoing series of delays, other than citing manufacturing challenges. Some sources claimed the issue has been due to light leaking out and affecting the camera, while others pointed to a mismatch in the color for the home button.Whatever the cause, Apple may have resolved the problem--consider the iPad 2, which debuted this weekend in both white and black.Schiller's tweet also comes on top of a report from an analyst with Concord Securities who said last week that Apple has solved the issues with the white iPhone, which he believes were due to a full-lamination problem that affected the coating of the phone. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo added that Apple is ramping up production this month to ship the white phone at the beginning of April.

0 Vote(s)
