If Clippy isn&39't buried here, who--or what--is(Credit:Screenshot of Microsoft promo video by Edward Moyer/CNET Center for Investigative Reporting)In a mysterious turn of events worthy of Elvis Presley, "Clippy," everyone's least favorite talking paper clip cum animated software assistant, appears to be the star of a new Microsoft initiative--despite the fact that he's supposedly been dead since 2004.GeekWire's Todd Bishop spied the fastener in what he reports is--gasp!--Microsoft's new training tool for Office, a game called Ribbon Hero 2. Clippy even appears to get top billing--the game's official name, Bishop reports, is Ribbon Hero 2: Clippy's Second Chance (a title that's sure to send shivers down the spine of many an Office user). It's not the first time the aroma of conspiracy has wafted around the cloying length of wire. A month after Clippy's supposed 2001 ousting from Microsoft's flagship software suite (and his supposed move to jobs as a cab driver and a UPS deliveryman), a duo of crack CNET investigative journalists revealed that the fastener had somehow made his way into Office XP.Just last year, a promotional video for Office 2010 showed what appeared to be Clippy's grave site, replete with a deceased date of 2004.It's not clear why Microsoft would stage the paper clip's death, but it's equally unclear how said clip would manage to return from the grave. As evidence of Clippy's continued existence, Bishop points to the video below, supposedly the work of Microsoft, and to this blog item by one "Doug Thomas," supposedly an employee of the software giant. We offer them for your own examination and speculation, while we investigate the issue further.Another question that arises is: If Clippy is in fact alive, who--or what--was buried in his place Most unclear of all, however, may be the question: Why on Earth would Microsoft let Clippy--let alone an undead Clippy--helm a training video for OfficePerhaps our readers can help clear things up by offering their theories in the comments section below.
Fujifilm FinePix X100 (photos) View the full galleryThe Fujifilm FinePix X100 isn't news. In fact, it's been tradeshowed, previewed, twittered and generally overexposed (if you'll pardon the expression) for months now. And yet, until today, we haven't had US pricing or availability for it. The wait is over: it'll be available in March, and you'll be shelling out $1,195.95 for it. Yup, $1,200.The irony of this post is that despite Fujifilm's buzz-generation machine, I haven't yet actually covered the camera, save the photos fromCES linked here. So I'll rectify that right now. From a market standpoint, the X100 is a bit of an oddball. In spirit, it seems closest to the Leica X1, another expensive rangefinder-style compact using an APS-C-size sensor. But the X1, while it doesn't seem to be officially discontinued, is out of stock at a lot of outlets and no replacement has been announced. I don't know whether that's a commentary on the X1's $2,000 price tag or the size of the market for a product like this.I do think the potential X100 user may also overlap with those attracted to less expensive cameras like the Olympus E-P2 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2: they're rangefinderish-style cameras with a relatively large sensor that you can slap a nice prime lens on.For reference, here are some specs on the cameras:&nbsp'Fujifilm FinePix X100Leica X1Olympus PEN E-P2Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2Sensor (effective resolution)12-megapixel CMOS12.2-megapixel CMOS12.3-megapixel Live MOS12.1-megapixel Live MOSAPS-C (n/a)APS-C (n/a)17.3mm x 13mm17.3 x 13.0mmFocal-length multiplier1.5x1.5x2x2xSensitivity rangeISO 100 (expanded)/ 200 - ISO 6400/ 12,800 (expanded)ISO 100 - ISO 3,200ISO 100 - ISO 3,200 ISO 100 - ISO 6,400 Continuous shootingn/a3fpsn/a 3fps 12 JPEG/ 10 raw 3.2fps unlimited JPEG/7 raw Viewfinder magnification/ effective magnificationElectronic/Optical hybrid n/a 1.44 million dots 0.5x/90 percent coverage OVFNoneElectronic 100 percent 1.44 million dots1.15x/0.58x Optional Electronic n/aAutofocusn/a contrast AF11-area contrast AF11-area contrast AF23-area contrast AFShutter speed30-1/4,000 sec.' bulb30-1/2,000 sec.60-1/4,000 sec' bulb to 30 minutes 60-1/4,000 sec' bulb to 4 minutes' 1/160 x-syncMeteringn/an/a324 area144 zoneImage stabilizationNoneNoneSensor shiftOpticalVideo1280x720 n/aNone720/30p Motion JPEG AVI 1080/60i/50i @ 17, 13 Mbps 720/60p @17, 13 Mbps AVCHD or Motion JPEG QuickTime MOV Audion/an/aStereo' mic inputMonoLCD size2.8-inch fixed 460,000 dots 2.7-inch fixed230,000 dots3-inch fixed230,000 dots 3-inch fixed touch screen 460,000 dots Battery life (CIPA rating)n/a260 shots &nbsp' 300 shots Dimensions (inches, WHD)5.0 x 2.9 x 2.14.9 x 2.3 x 1.3&nbsp' 4.7 x 2.8 x 1.4 Body operating weight (ounces)n/a11.1 (est)12.211 (est)Mfr. The viewfinder toggles between a optical (like a point-and-shoot's, but higher quality with an information overlay) and electronic, which is nice to have. The large sensor is definitely an attraction, with its potential for better-than-average low-light quality, especially compared to the smaller Four Thirds sensors. And yes, the design is cool, though many of the controls are laid out like it's just a big 'ol point-and-shoot.

0 Vote(s)

The long-planned breakup of Motorola is now a reality. The two new companies both began trading this morning on the New York Stock Exchange, Motorola Mobility Holdings under the ticker "MMI" and Motorola Solutions as "MSI."Motorola Mobility gets the more consumer-focused lineup of mobile phones and set-top boxes, and it begins independent life riding a surge of success for the company's Android-based smartphones. In the third quarter of 2010, the unified Motorola posted an operating profit ($3 million) for its mobile devices unit for the first time in about four years, as the company shipped 9.1 million phones, including 3.8 million smartphones."We are pleased that Motorola Mobility has reached this important milestone. After more than two years of planning, today we begin operating as a financially strong, independent company trading on the New York Stock Exchange," Sanjay Jha, chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility, said in a statement.Motorola Solutions, meanwhile, will focus on enterprise and network business products. The plan to separate a then-struggling Motorola into two companies was made public in March 2008.

0 Vote(s)

Flat-screen TV maker Vizio is making the jump into the smartphone and tablet computer markets, tapping Google to take on the likes of Apple and Research In Motion. The company, which teased the move in an ad that ran before the Rose Bowl game yesterday (see below), is expected to reveal its wireless products tomorrow during a news conference before the Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas later this week, according to reports by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.Vizio's Via Phone will have a 4-inch screen and front- and rear-facing cameras, while the Via Tablet will sport an 8-inch screen high-resolution screen, Wi-Fi, and a front-facing camera, according to the reports. Both will reportedly be powered by Google's Android operating system and sold through Wal-Mart and Costco stores. Vizio representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Irvine, Calif.-based company, which is best known for its low-cost TVs and Blu-ray players, will face tough competition from Apple'siPhone andiPad and RIM's BlackBerrys and PlayBook tablet. Market research firm iSuppli expects tablet sales to more than triple from the 18 million units in 2010 to 61 million in 2011, but the Android market is crowded. Some 15 suppliers--including Acer, Dell, Cisco Systems, and Samsung--are expected to be selling Android-based tablets by mid-2011, according to industry tracker IMS Research.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Joe Aimonetti/CNET)The next major version of theiPad is said to bring some slight design changes that could impact how users interact with the device both in their hands and on flat surfaces.AppleInsider links to JapaneseMac blog MacOtakara, which is reporting that the next version of the iPad is getting a flat back to match that of the most recentiPod Touch, as well as a slight change in dimensions, cutting a reported 3mm off the length and width while retaining an identically sized screen. In other words, the next iPad could have a smaller bezel--the black area around the screen, and it won't teeter-totter or slide around when you press on something along the edges.MacOtakara says a more substantial change to the exterior will be the location of the speaker, which could be moved from the side of the unit to the back. Presumably, this could keep someone who is holding the device in either portrait or landscape mode less of a chance of blocking the speaker holes. MacOtakara also says this speaker would be wide range, which could offer more evenly distributed audio at off-angle viewing. One other small tweak MacOtakara is reporting is a change in the location to the iPad's ambient light sensor, which is moving from the front of the unit to the back. This would be a fairly large departure in location given where Apple keeps it on the current iPad, as well as on iPhones, iPods, iMacs, and its MacBook Pro and Air lines.MacOtakara also weighs in on the longstanding rumor that the next iPad will gain dual cameras and support for Apple's FaceTime video chat service, saying only that it's a possibility. These small tidbits join a slew of other rumored second-generation iPad details including dual support for GSM and CDMA, cameras that match the ones found in the iPhone 4, availability in time for Christmas (we can go ahead and cross that one of the list). In addition, an analyst report from this morning says the yet-to-be-announced device will be packing a dual-core processor.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)Throughout 2010, CNETCar Tech editors drove thousands of miles reviewing over 80 cars. We punched addresses into the navigation systems, talked to the cars through voice command, listened to music from a variety of audio sources, and even made calls to see how well Bluetooth phone systems worked. We took the cars onto twisty roads, bumpy roads, up steep hills, into stop-and-go traffic, and sped long distances on freeways to get a sense of fuel economy, handling, ride quality, and acceleration. We tested lane departure systems, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and automated braking. Now, at the end of the year, we look back on all these cars to see which were the best. Our five top tech cars for 2010 have advanced power trains and suspensions, feature-rich navigation, top tier audio, and innovative driver assistance features.Although these top five are an impressive set of cars, there were many other worthy contenders throughout the year, and we had to call them out in their own categories. Take a look at the top performance cars, top everyday drivers, and top family haulers. And we couldn't help but look back at all the car shows we've been to during the year, and so we came up with a special category for top concept cars of 2010.Top tech cars of 2010 Top techie performance cars of 2010 (photos) Top everyday tech cars (photos) Top tech family haulers of 2010 (photos) Top concept cars of 2010 (photos)

0 Vote(s)

The race between enterprise-focused social networking services Chatter, run by Web-software giant Salesforce.com, and Yammer, a darling of the venture-capital set, goes on.Salesforce announced today that it will buy Web conferencing provider Dimdim for $31 million to bring real-time messaging and collaboration tools to its Facebook-style enterprise collaboration service Chatter.Dimdim provides its users with a cheap alternative for setting up online and remote meetings. That includes real-time messaging, screen sharing and other additional services. Most of its services have been popularized by consumer-oriented services like LinkedIn and Facebook.&''We really want to follow the Facebook model,&'' said Kendall Collins, chief marketing officer for Salesforce. &''Many of the technologies that Dimdim brings are similar to key aspects of what Facebook delivers.&''The actual Dimdim service will not shut down, and Salesforce will honor all existing contracts. They won&'t be accepting any new contracts as the technology is folded into Chatter.Salesforce doesn&'t plan on using Dimdim for its web conferencing service, despite that being Dimdim&'s specialty. Instead, the company plans to duct tape some of Dimdim&'s technology onto its Chatter service.&''Think about that green dot and knowing that people are online and you can communicate in real time, that&'s a critical aspect of what Dimdim delivers,&'' Collins said.Salesforce didn&'t disclose when the new features would go live on Chatter, but said that a working demo would be available at its 2011 Dreamforce conference in August later this year.Salesforce doesn&'t see it as a way to bring its social collaboration service up to speed with the rest of its competitors, Collins said, one of the company&'s largest competitors, has had real time chat and Skype integration for video conferencing for some time now.Chatter has so far been deployed by more than 60,000 companies. Salesforce&'s largest Chatter customer, Dell, has around 100,000 active users a4" while the rest of its paying customers have around 5,000 active users.Yammer has been deployed by more than 100,000 companies a4" and 80 percent of the largest companies in the world on the Fortune 500 list use the service. Yammer also recently picked up $25 million in funding to help expand its efforts.Chatter a4" originally a quite costly service, requiring users to be Salesforce customers or pay $15 per user per month a4" became free to use late last year in order to compete with the freemium collaboration services like Yammer. The move to a freemium model, which entices users with a free service and then charges for premium services, was a long time coming according to some of its investors. Salesforce also plans to release Chatter.com, an enterprise-style social network like Facebook, sometime this year. This is the third major acquisition by Salesforce in less than a month. Salesforce dropped a whopping $212 million on ruby-on-rails web application developer Heroku in December, and then spentundisclosed amount on email contact manager Etacts. That&'s almost half of the cash Salesforce had on hand at the end of its most recent operating quarter, according to the company&'s most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.Dimdim has raised $9 million in funding and is a graduate of the DEMO Fall 2007 conference. Dimdim was founded in March 2006 and is headquartered in Lowell, Mass. Its investors include Index Ventures, Nexus Venture Partners and Draper Richards.[Photo: antwerpenR]Next Story: Foursquare fights fake friends Previous Story: Privacy setting on Facebook financials to change in 2012PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Chatter, collaboration, enterprise, social networkingCompanies: salesforce, YammerPeople: Kendall Collins Tags: Chatter, collaboration, enterprise, social networkingCompanies: salesforce, YammerPeople: Kendall CollinsMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
At long last, Verizon has an iPhone. The carrier held a media event in New York today to announce that, after years of negotiations, it will make an iPhone available to its customers early next month. Before the announcement was made, Verizon President and COO Lowell McAdam hit the stage to discuss Verizon&'s network investment and what today&'s announcement will mean for consumers in the US. Given the improvements Verizon is offering with its LTE 4G network, he wishes they could call it &''6G.&''McAdam said Verizon and Apple have been working together for two years to make the Verizon iPhone a reality. He announced that the phone would be available next month.Apple COO Tim Cook then introduced the iPhone, which is pretty much the same as the current iPhone 4. Unfortunately for 4G hopefuls, it will be a CDMA phone &8212' so it won&'t run on Verizon&'s LTE 4G network. Cook said Apple has enormous respect for Verizon and the &''hard won loyalty from its customers.&'' That&'s something I can&'t imagine Apple saying about AT&amp'T.Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead then came on the stage to talk logistics. The company will start training its employees this week, and it will start improving its delivery systems to handle the increased volume of sales. &''We have designed this network to give the customer the optimum experience,&'' Mead said. The company has been testing thousands of iPhones on its network for months.&''We&'re ready for this launch,&'' he said. Indeed that seems to be the prevailing theme at the event. On February 3, existing Verizon customers will be able to pre-order the iPhone before others. It will be available to everyone on February 10. It will come with 3G hotspot capabilities, allowing up to five separate devices to share mobile internet. AT&amp'T, on the other hand, struggled to offer basic internet tethering for a single device on its network.Cook and Mead then joined the stage together to field some questions. When asked why they went for a CDMA iPhone instead of LTE, Cook said that LTE chipsets would force some design compromises that Apple wouldn&'t make. Additionally, Verizon customers want the phone now, instead of waiting for Apple to plug-in LTE.When asked if the phone was exclusive to Verizon, Cook said that Apple has a multi-year non-exclusive contract with Verizon. He wouldn&'t comment on what that meant exactly, but it sounds like the door is open for Sprint to eventually get an iPhone.Someone was brave enough to ask about CDMA&'s inability to run voice and data traffic at the same time. Mead said that the iPhone would work like any other CDMA device, meaning you won&'t be able to hold a voice call and use data services like you can on AT&amp'T&'s iPhone. While this may be a deal-breaker to some, it seems like a good tradeoff for the addition of mobile hotspot capabilities.Surprisingly, VentureBeat&'s Matt Lynley found that the announcement of the Verizon iPhone had little effect on the stocks of all companies involved. It will definitely have an effect on the amount of iPhones Apple ships though &8212' iSuppli predicts that they will increase by 12.1 million this year. But while it&'s certainly good for Apple, VentureBeat&'s Owen Thomas sees the Verizon iPhone as a sign of the end of the golden age for mobile carriers.Calling all developers: We want your apps for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight!
Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley, who ironically got lost on his way to Le Web, just broke some stats about the company on stage at the conference. Crowley said that despite the fact that many people have the perception that Foursquare is at 200 hires, the company is actually just about to hit 40 employees whereas a year ago it was just four people. These new hires have joined to accomodate recent growth: Foursquare hit over 5 million users last week and is at 2 million check-ins and 25K new users a day, Crowley confirmed onstage. Crowley also revealed that sers are split up geographically between 60% US and 40% international, with the average Foursquare user checks in 3-4 times day.In perhaps the largest reflection of growth, Foursquare just hired an engineer that only deals with statistics.Crowley also implied to Le Web founder Loic Lemur that he turned down an offer in the &''ballpark&'' of $140 million, most likely from Facebook or Yahoo. Pretty nifty for something that &''wasn&'t meant to be a company.&''CrunchBase InformationFoursquareInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Hewlett-Packard chief executive Leo Apotheker said today that HP will install both Microsoft Windows and its own WebOS operating system on desktop and laptop computers in the future.Apotheker said that HP plans to install a version of WebOS on its computers that are shipping after the end of the year. But that operating system will not replace Microsoft Windows, as some have speculated. Rather, Apotheker said the two operating systems will work seamlessly and you will be able to switch from one to the other in the future.&''Our relationship with Microsoft was strong, is strong, and will remain strong,&'' Apotheker said. But Apotheker said that only one operating system will ship on tablet computers in the future. As HP said on Feb. 9, it&'s planning to ship its HP Touch Pad tablet computers with WebOS. HP will also ship a Microsoft Windows-based tablet in the future, once Microsoft makes that software available. He said that HP&'s WebOS will offer a &''user experience that is world class&'' and that it is intuitive, easy to learn, does multitasking perfectly well, and devices will have a seamless experience.&''Next Story: Japan earthquake stalls Nissan electric car production Previous Story: HP promises profitable growth and returns for decades to comePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: webOS, WindowsCompanies: Hewlett Packard, HP, MicrosoftPeople: Lo Apotheker Tags: webOS, WindowsCompanies: Hewlett Packard, HP, MicrosoftPeople: Lo ApothekerDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
I thought all this us against Canada stuff was just for fun. But on a recent drive up to visit our friendly frozen neighbors to the north I was either on some kind of list, or just randomly chosen, for quite the interesting search procedure.Let&'s say you&'re a humble tech blogger driving to Canada to visit a startup. If you have your passport and don&'t have all your furniture in your car they ask a few nice questions about what you&'re doing, ask when you&'re leaving and if you have any alcohol or tobacco or large amounts of cash in the car. A minute later you&'re on your way, desperately trying to convert km/h to mph, wondering if your car insurance is valid up there and frustrated that your navigation system seems to think the world ends at our border. Quick meeting with the startup and then you flee back to the warm comforting arms of America. Not so on my most recent trip. As I got to the Canadian border booth guy a second Canadian person walked up and they talked quietly. He&'d barely looked at my passport before telling me to pull over to the search area. Ok, no problem, has to happen at some point. Then two border police asked me to get out of my car and step to a table and remove everything from my pockets. They went through everything in my wallet. Asked me over and over why I was visiting Canada. I was super pleasant and refrained from a variety of sarcastic responses. Then they said they were going to search my car. Ok, no problem. Nothing there I&'m worried about. &''Please walk to the main building sir while we do this.&'' &''Can I stay and watch.&''&''No. And please leave your cell phone here.&''&''Ah, no. I&'m taking my phone.&''&''Who do you want to call&''&''No one. But it&'s my phone. Look at it while I&'m here.&''&''Sir, please leave your phone and go inside the building.&''&''Can I just leave now please Don&'t really want to visit Canada any more.&''&''No. Please step inside the building.&''They were looking a little fidgety at this point. And since leaving Canada wasn&'t the option if I didn&'t comply, I went inside the building. I couldn&'t see what they were doing for the next 15 minutes, but they eventually came back in and gave me my passport and keys. I asked for my phone. The woman said someone else had it. I said that wasn&'t super helpful. She went away, and came back with my phone, which was now turned off.I&'m no constitutional law scholar, but this strikes me as something that would be illegal in the U.S., even for non-U.S. citizens. Searching and seizing is fine, but not letting the person watch while being searched and seized is just weird. If there are any Canadian lawyers out there familiar with the rules around border searches, please let me know if this is considered appropriate. If this is normal, we need to up the game with mandatory body cavity searches for all Canadian visitors.

0 Vote(s)
