BrightSource has been tapped to build its LPT 550 solar thermal &39'power tower&39' system for the island of Crete, Greece.(Credit:BrightSource)The Greek island of Crete is planning for a 38-megawatt solar plant an BrightSource has been tapped to help build it.Oakland, Calif.-based BrightSource has signed a deal with Nur Energie, the U.K. company developing the solar project, to use its LPT 550 energy system, the solar manufacturer announced today. When complete and running at full capacity, the plant is expected to generate enough electricity for 13,000 homes.BrightSource is known for its signature solar "power tower" technology that employs hundreds of sun-worshipping heliostats. The solar-tracking mirrors reflect solar rays on a common tower containing a boiler. The liquid inside the tower's boiler is heated to produce a high temperature steam. The steam power is used to drive a turbine-powered generator to make electricity. The company seems to be taking a proactive approach to addressing water concerns.BrightSource's 392-megawatt Ivanpah Solar Project slated for construction this fall on public lands in Southern California's Mojave Desert has come up against environmental concerns over water use. The company received approval from the Bureau of Land Management to build on public lands and approvals from the California Public Utilities Commission for its power purchase agreements, but conservationists voiced concerns over water use. In response, BrightSource pointed out that using a dry air-cooling system, as opposed to a water cooling system, its system uses less water than a conventional solar project might, and the Ivanpah project is expected to use only 100 acre-feet of water per year, according to BrightSource. With this project, BrightSource has put that information out front and center."In order to conserve precious desert water, LPT 550 uses air-cooling to convert the steam back into water, resulting in a 95 percent reduction in water usage compared to conventional wet-cooling in competing technologies. The water is then returned to the boiler in an environmentally-friendly closed process," the company said in a statement.

0 Vote(s)

Bing is putting social gaming into search results pages, letting users play a title without ever having to visit its specialty Bing Games site, or the publisher's hosted game page on social networks like Facebook. The first social title to be offered with this functionality is Happy Island from social gaming company Crowdstar. When a Bing user searches for the game in Bing, the full playable title will show up as an embedded result on the top of the page using technology from Sibblingz. Users can then play through the first few levels before being asked to log-in with their Facebook credentials.Bing's big push lately has been to speed up user tasks--be it hunting for a movie time, music lyrics, or images. What Microsoft has done to increase that speed is to change how the results from these kinds of searches get displayed, so that you can get into deeper threads of information before you ever arrive on destination sites. During the company's Bing Search Summit earlier this week, Microsoft said it was up to more than 400 of these specialty "visual search experiences." Microsoft has not said whether additional social titles from other developers will get the same kind of top-level search treatment the company introduced as part of a platform update earlier this year. But based on the company's relationship with developer Crowdstar, and the two companies' efforts with the recently-launched Microsoft Game Hub, it's safe to assume others will be on the way.Correction at 9:10 a.m. PDT: Playing games from inside of Bing's search result pages was launched as part of a platform update back in June. The implementation of Happy Island is the first social gaming title to be offered in this capacity.
Tim Kendall, Facebook&'s Director of Monetization, has left the company. This is particularly noteworthy because Kendall first joined Facebook nearly five years ago, in June 2006. He architected all of the company&'s early monetization strategies, although in recent years there have been a handful of high level hires, mostly from Google, that have come in as peers or above him.One of those more recent hires, David Fischer, sent an email out announcing his departure, saying &'' it is safe to say we would not be where we are today without Tim:&''Team,As some of you may know, Tim Kendall recently announced, in his characteristically modest way, he is leaving Facebook. Tomorrow is officially Tima4a4s last day.Over more than four years at Facebook, Tim has had an incredible impact on the company, and in particular on the development of the ads business. Starting back in 2006, Tim wrote the blueprint for our monetization strategy. (You might be wondering how I know this given I haven&'t been here that long, but trust me on this a4" Tim gave me a copy of the document when I started and strongly &''advised&'' me to read it. It was good advice.). In all seriousness, it is safe to say we would not be where we are today without Tim. Tim recognized early on not only that advertising could be social, but that it should be social on Facebook. What began as a4Asponsored stories,a4 social advertising has transformed the marketing business. And again, Facebook has Tim to thank. Tim is truly a renaissance man. All of us who have worked with him have seen his strong intellect, quiet intensity, and complete focus on the mission at hand, with little tolerance for distractions or bureaucracy. He balances that with a more lively side that seems to come out after dark and has been displayed over the years at fine Palo Alto establishments like Rudy&'s and the Old Pro. We will greatly miss all sides of Tim.It&'s a bittersweet honor to be the messenger of news like this. It&'s never fun to say goodbye to a beloved and valuable player like Tim, but I&'m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Tim, and to continue to advance the work that Tim started and led for us for such a big part of our company&'s history. So please join me in thanking Tim Kendall for everything he has done for Facebook as a company, and for many of us personally. We will all be watching closely to see what Tim does next and what innovations he brings to light after a well deserved break. All the best to Tim in his next adventure.Cheers,DavidWhat&'s next for Tim We&'re guessing Pirate or Gentleman Hacker, but no word back from him yet. Maybe he&'ll just buy a small central american country with his Facebook stock proceeds and settle down. We do hear that both Zynga and Twitter may be recruiting him aggressively&8230'CrunchBase InformationTim KendallFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
