After record solar-plant approval in 2010, the California Energy Commission believes its "big push" in solar-thermal projects is over. This past year represented a "sea change" as regulators ended a 20-year dry spell and fast-tracked solar-thermal plant approval, spokesman Adam Gottlieb told Reuters yesterday, helping drive the state's and nation's broader renewable-energy goals. But because so many developers were rushing to meet a December 31 deadline for federal incentives, CEC staff are expecting a slower year in 2011. In hindsight, the rush was overdone, given that Congress has now extended that deadline for federal funding by another year.In 2010, the California Energy Commission approved nine solar-thermal plants, which are solar plants that concentrate heat before converting it into electricity. More commonplace photovoltaic plants, which require approval on a local level rather than from the CEC, typically use panels that convert sunlight directly into electricity.A solar thermal plant using parabolic troughs. (Credit:Acciona)Before 2010, regulators hadn't approved any solar-thermal plants in California since a series of plants known as the Solar Energy Generating Systems, built mostly in the 1980s. The last SEGS plant was built in 1990 and has a total capacity of 80 megawatts--enough to power 24,000 homes. The CEC has just two solar-thermal projects under review. The 250-megawatt Ridgecrest plant, under development in Kern County by Solar Millennium's Solar Trust, would eventually power at least 75,000 homes. Solar Trust is conducting a two-year study of the rare Mohave Ground Squirrel at the site before proceeding with its application. The second is under development by the city of Palmdale, north of Los Angeles. It would combine natural gas-fired turbine technology with solar technology, eventually generating 570 megawatts of power.Developers of many of the nine plants approved in 2010 haven't yet started construction as they wait to firm up financing.CEC staff believe there is still "significant interest from developers in solar-thermal projects," spokeswoman Sandy Louey said. But so far, none has filed applications for new projects with the CEC.Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved.

0 Vote(s)

An illustration of the &39'PaintPot&39' tutorial application written with Google App Inventor for Android.(Credit:Google)Anyone can now be an Android app designer.Google's App Inventor, which was previously available to people only on request, is now free for anyone who wants to create their own Android smartphone apps. Part of the Google Labs playground, App Inventor offers you a programming environment to create those apps but doesn't require that you have any programming skills.By following online tutorials and visually building an app step by step, early adopters of App Inventor have already been able to create some clever programs, according to a Google blog, including vocabulary apps for kids, a bus scheduler, and even a marriage proposal cloaked within a Harry Potter quiz. The apps themselves are built on a personal computer but then synced with the phone, so budding designers can see how their creations look and work on the mobile device. The apps can be as simple or as complex as the developers can and are able to make them. Google also encourages people to share their experiences and any questions about building an Android app through the program's discussion forum. What's it like to design an app with App Inventor You can find out from CNET reporter Ian Morris, who wrote about his own attempt to build one.

0 Vote(s)

Every leader enjoys moments of revelation. In the case of Chinese Politburo Standing Committee member Li Changchun, it seems that his came the moment he googled himself and discovered that some people might not appreciate him as he would have wished.A New York Times report intimates that WikiLeaks cables reveal that Li was rather taken aback that he could put his own name in that helpful Google search box and, within a mere breath-length, up would pop entries that were not uniformly supportive of his politics or being. The cables reportedly go on to suggest that once Li further googled not merely his own name but that of members of his family, he ordered three Chinese telecommunications companies to cease working with Google and went on to exert further pressures on the company. (Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)Naturally, many will conclude that the seemingly uncontrollable essence of the Web is something that a controlled system such as China's finds threatening to its core. Google's eventual departure from China suggests that the principles of free search and free speech cannot co-exist with the principles of strong central control. But if one tries to look at Li Chanchun's alleged Google Shock in something more than mere political terms, perhaps it also offers one of the human truths of leadership.Leaders of any organization rise to their positions not merely because they want to win power. They rise because they want to enjoy the feeling that some might call admiration and others might even extend to embrace the idea of love. For all the accusations of, for example, prickliness, hubris, arrogance, self-regard, callousness, venality, greed, and myopia that might be leveled at everyone from Steve Jobs to Bill Gates to Bill Clinton to Vladimir Putin, these people are often the last to know, or even to consider, that someone might actively dislike them. When they are confronted by the realization, not one of them likes it. Not one of them blows it off without a single human emotion. They feel something. Something they really don't like.If the WikiLeaked cables are accurate, they might well reflect the notion not merely that when a Chinese leader googled himself, he saw a threat to political hegemony. They might also offer an image of a human being who had rarely, if ever, confronted criticism to his face. The written word is, apparently, going out of style. We are living, supposedly, in a world of images that affect, images that need to be manipulated in order to change their effect. But there is still something jarring, something that makes people mad, about reading harsh words written in their own direction. That's why baseball managers never read the papers. Never. Really.

0 Vote(s)

In American politics, energy and the environment are rocky issues. So when President Obama called this week for the U.S. to run on 80 percent clean energy by 2035, he couched it in terms that this capitalistic, economically anxious nation know best: Money and jobs.In a press call yesterday, Energy Secretary Steven Chu reiterated Obama&'s message, giving sign of how the administration will position the president&'s clean energy plans politically.&''This is wealth creation,&'' Chu said.In his speech, Obama made no mention of climate change. Instead, he couched energy goals in terms of making America competitive globally in a market that attracted $243 billion in investment worldwide last year.Obama&'s plan entails eliminating oil subsidies, a measure that has failed in the past. Major energy legislation has also struggled, but Chu pushed for a uniting theme that sidestepped the skepticism on global warming and environmental impact.&''This is the future of our economic prosperity&8230'the driving reason can be any reason you choose,&'' Chu said, pointing to jobs, making money, saving money and saving the environment as a few of many motivators. The repositioning of alternative energy also touched on a keystone of American anxiety about competing globally as countries like China rise (and are investing in major ways in cleantech).&''Around the world, countries are moving aggressively to lead the clean energy race,&'' Chu said. &''We cannot take leadership and innovation for granted. This is a race.&''If the rebranding of clean energy as wealth and jobs creation goes off successfully, it could help push forward political support on measures that have been difficult to pass. Of course, execution is everything, but the state of the union speech has repositioned energy legislation into a more hopeful place than it was before.Next Story: Facebook denies phone rumors, hints at heavy integration with HTC Previous Story: Tesla to recycle electric car batteries in BelgiumPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: clean energy, cleantech, renewable portfolio standardsCompanies: DOEPeople: Barack Obama, Steven Chu Tags: clean energy, cleantech, renewable portfolio standardsCompanies: DOEPeople: Barack Obama, Steven ChuIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
Ubisoft, the third-largest video game publisher in the U.S. market, said today that it scored a big hit with the third installment of its Assassin&'s Creed series, shipping more than 6.5 million copies of the latest game. That means the French company&'s big bet on launching new versions of Assassin&'s Creed games every year has paid off.The success of the Assassin&'s Creed Brotherhood game reinforces the notion that blockbusters are ruling in games, just as they do in Hollywood. The company made the announcement as part of its third fiscal quarter earnings, which exceeded the company&'s expectations. The results show just how much a popular game such as Assassin&'s Creed Brotherhood can move the needle for companies such as Ubisoft, which have come to depend on blockbuster holiday releases.Ubisoft is launching a new Assassin&'s Creed title every November, directly challenging Activision Blizzard&'s Call of Duty games. Full told, the Assassin&'s Creed series has now sold more than 25 million copies, generating roughly $1.5 billion in retail revenues. At retail prices, Ubisoft&'s latest Assassin&'s Creed Brotherhood game generated an estimated $390 million in revenues. For the full quarter ended Dec. 31, Ubisoft had expected sales of 520 million euros ($701 million). Instead, the company generated sales of 600 million euros, or $809 million, up 21.2 percent from a year ago.The latest Assassin&'s Creed game was set in Rome during the Renaissance era. Gamers could wander through the vast city and complete missions related to the main story, where a clan of assassins squares off against another secret group. This year, the title included an innovative multiplayer system where gamers wandered through crowds, spotted targets, and killed them before slipping away back into the crowds. But Ubisoft has also taken some risks on new titles, such as the Michael Jackson: The Experience dance game. With Assassin&'s Creed, Ubisoft has more than 500 employees working on staggered schedules. The increase was also due to rapid sales of Ubisoft&'s dance games, even as some people thought music games were dead. Indeed, while Activision Blizzard laid off 500 employees last week and announced it would no longer make Guitar Hero games, Ubisoft said it shipped a combined 10.5 million dance games. That includes sales of Just Dance, Just Dance 2, Just Dance Kids, Michael Jackson: The Experience, and Dance on Broadway.Ubisoft also said that it sold more than 2 million Kinect games across the Your Shape: Fitness Evolved and Fighters Uncaged titles. That gives it roughly 18 percent of the U.S. Kinect market share and 21 percent share in in Europe. Microsoft&'s Kinect motion-sensing system debuted in November and shipped 8 million units in its first season.Ubisoft said its overall market share grew from 7.8 percent in Europe to 9.2 percent and from 5.4 percent to 7.3 percent in the U.S. market during 2010. For the full fiscal year, Ubisoft projects revenues of $1.38 billion and fourth quarter sales of $214 million. In the current fourth fiscal quarter, the company is planning to ship Assassin&'s Creed Brotherhood for the PC, Beyond Good and Evil HD on Xbox Live, and six titles for the Nintendo 3DS. The revenues for the fourth fiscal quarter will likely be lower than a year ago because of a light release schedule.Yves Guillemot, chief executive of Ubisoft, said the company plans to refocus on key franchises in the high-definition segment, meaning that it won&'t put as much emphasis on the Nintendo Wii. But it will also invest heavily in digital games, casual titles, the 3DS handheld coming from Nintendo in March, and Sony&'s NGP coming this fall.Guillemot also said that Ubisoft expects to launch another Assassin&'s Creed title in the year that ends March 31, 2012. Meanwhile, Ubisoft has added more than 100 employees to a new game studio in Toronto, Canada, headed by Jade Raymond, who headed the creation of the original Assassin&'s Creed game.Guillemot said that the dance genre of games &8212' which has become a much better experience with motion-sensing platforms &8212' will likely be sustainable for the next four or five years.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: BMW readies electric car, Obama pitches $8 billion for clean energy Previous Story: Will the iPhone Mini only stream media That&'s crazy talkPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Assassin&'s Creed, Assassin&'s Creed Brotherhood, Just Dance 2, Michael Jackson The ExperienceCompanies: Activision Blizzard, UbisoftPeople: Yves Guillemot Tags: Assassin&'s Creed, Assassin&'s Creed Brotherhood, Just Dance 2, Michael Jackson The ExperienceCompanies: Activision Blizzard, UbisoftPeople: Yves GuillemotDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
