(Credit:CNET)Obviously, the big Apple news this week was the announcement of theiPad 2 (watch our First Look video here). Just as most people expected, the new device offers front- and rear-facing cameras, a faster processor, and FaceTime capabilities, and even has a slightly different design than the original. The iPad 2 will be available on both the AT&T and Verizon networks March 11 and comes in both white and black, and there are several different models and price points to choose from.Even though I mentioned in an earlier post that I probably wouldn't buy the new iPad 2, now that I've seen it, I can't help but try to think of ways to afford it. I'm thinking of selling my original iPad, or maybe I'll try to use my tax refund to foot the bill, but I bet I'm not the only one making these calculations. My question to you is: did any of you plan on not buying the new iPad, but, after the unveiling, couldn't help but change your mind Let me know in the comments. This week's apps are both games. The first challenges you to escape the fiery clutches of a volcano, and in the second you direct a band of heroes to battle fearsome foes.Volcano Escape has good-looking graphics, but suffers from a couple of minor issues.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Volcano Escape (99 cents) is an arcade platformer type of game where your challenge is to see how high you can climb as you escape the rising lava of a volcano. The control system includes onscreen joysticks for movement and firing your weapon, and you have a jump button in the upper right for jumping ever higher, away from the rising lava. As you climb, you'll encounter bad guys you need to shoot so they can't take away from your health (you get three hearts to start off). You'll also be able to collect boxes that give you power-ups like shields and jet packs. Collecting boxes also lets you unlock new characters to play. If you can manage to stay away from the rising lava and clear your path of baddies, you'll be on your way to new high scores.Volcano Escape is a game that I really want to like, but it definitely has a few problems. On myiPhone 4, the gameplay is a bit choppy' at one point, I even force-quit all my apps and rebooted my iPhone, which still didn't work. It's also difficult to tell where the level of the lava is on your first several games, making it a surprise sometimes when you die. The jump button is also problematic because it's above the shooting controls, and I'd often end up pressing the wrong button. If they fix these issues, it would be easy to recommend this game, but you may want to wait before paying any money.Overall, Volcano Escape is a pretty fun game in spite of its problems. It's a shame that the good-looking graphics and game concept seem to be undermined by a few minor problems. Once they fix a few of the issues or allow for more control customization, this game will be great for anyone who wants an easy-to-pick-up time waster.Managing four characters in the heat of battle is no easy task.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Battleheart ($2.99) takes the RPG battle mechanic of fighting in a party of characters and distills it down to the basics for great single-player action. A quick early tutorial shows you how to move two characters and how to use their skills (a sword-wielding fighter and a healing cleric), but later you can hire more characters of different classes to balance out your four-character party. As you progress through the game, your character management skills are put to the test, and you'll definitely have moments of panic trying to get each character to perform exactly the way you want.As you complete battles in Battleheart, you'll earn money you can use to hire new character classes and buy new and more powerful items. After every five levels of experience gain, you'll also be able to add class-specific skills you can use in battles. The rogue character has a backstab ability you can unlock, for example. The game can be a little frustrating in certain parts. In some instances your characters end up stacked on top of each other during battle, which often leads to selecting the wrong character--an infuriating problem, especially if you're trying to keep a wounded character alive. Fortunately this problem doesn't occur too often, and you'll mostly have time to move characters out of the way as long as they are not near death.Overall, Battleheart does a great job of challenging you to work out your strategy for party-based combat. With several unique character classes, tons of skills to unlock, and items you can upgrade for more power, Battleheart has plenty of replay value for the strategy-loving gamer. What's your favorite iPhone app Do you think I'm being too hard on Volcano Escape How do you like having control over an entire party of classic RPG characters Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

The home page of Primadesk, which is launching this week at Demo Spring, and which offers control over diverse content in the cloud.(Credit:Primadesk)As more and more applications move to the cloud, our hard drives are falling by the wayside. And that's probably a good thing. But in the process, we're no longer able to easily manage all of our content. And that's a problem. At least, that's the position of Primadesk, a start-up that is unveiling its new offering at Demo Spring in Palm Desert, Calif., this week. And the company thinks it has a solution: its Primadesk app aims to give us back our control over all our content, even if it's stored in a wide variety of cloud-based applications. The idea is pretty simple: the Primadesk app provides single sign-on access to most popular Web-based services and lets users quickly and easily locate and manage content stored in them, including dragging and dropping files, photos, and documents between them. Essentially, Primadesk is a personal cloud search engine that also comes with a file-management function. Enter a search term, such as "Paris" and you get results showing all your Gmails, Flickr photos, Google Docs files, and so on that mention the City of Light. And while CEO Srinivasa Venkataraman, formerly the CEO of AppStream, acknowledges that there are other services, such as Greplin and CloudMagic, that make it possible to search for personal content in the cloud, he argued that only Primadesk also offers the ability to manage all that content once you find it.The special sauce of the app is that Primadesk has figured out how to let you grab a file from one service--say, a Flickr photo--and drag it to another--say, Facebook. Or a document from a Web-based word processor into Gmail. And you can both copy to and pull from your hard drive as well. In addition, the app automatically backs up previous states of cloud content onto your hard drive, meaning that if you've backed up and then deleted, say, a Facebook message, Primadesk will have it for you. And it does so at a folder level, allowing you to see previous states of Facebook, Gmail, Flickr, and so on, regardless of what you've done with them online.Another benefit, Venkataraman said, is that Primadesk has an e-mail management feature that lets you consolidate all your e-mail, whether cloud-based or not, in one place. As messages flow in, you can see them presented in one place, with notations about which account they're associated with. And from the Primadesk app, you can do all the normal e-mail operations--send, reply, reply all, forward, and so on--from any of your accounts. One thing Primadesk can't do yet, Venkataraman said, is add metadata to content. So even though you can easily upload photos to Flickr or Facebook from your hard drive or another Web application, you can't automatically add tags. That may come later, he said. For now, Primadesk is expected to be free for basic usage, with a monthly charge for certain advanced features. The company hasn't said which features will be in which category, however. Venkataraman suggested that the cost may be in the $5 a month range for the premium features. And the company is also expecting that it will earn money by working with enterprise customers, for whom it will offer a full-featured version of the service. And while many of us may worry that handing over control of our personal content to a third party could be dangerous, Venkataraman says that he and the company's CTO both come from a security background.

0 Vote(s)

Solar road panels are layers of photovoltaic cells, heating elements, and wireless LED lights encased in durable glass that provides asphalt-like traction.(Credit:Solar Roadways)With a multiday, multiregion storm impacting 100 million people over the next couple of days, solar roads that melt snow and ice seem less like a far-fetched pipe dream and more like an obvious investment. Engineers on opposite sides of the country are working to make that happen. Solar Roadways in Boise, Idaho, received a contract from the Federal Highway Administration to build a solar road panel prototype, which was completed early last year. The 12x12-square-foot road designed by engineer and CEO Scott Brusaw is made out of panels encased in strong and durable glass with the traction of asphalt and that won't cause glare. Each encased panel generates 7.6 kilowatt hours of electricity per day, and can be connected to smart grids to power homes and business. Wireless LED lights embedded in the glass create road signs and weight-sensitive crosswalks. They also contain heating elements that can melt snow and ice. The technology to make snow plowing obsolete is similar to what's already used in automobile windshields. Heating elements in the glass melt existing snow or ice and prevent accumulation from developing. By preventing snow-related auto accidents and improving road access for emergency responders, the technology would save a lot of lives. It could also save cities a lot of money. As a rule of thumb, snow removal costs about $1 million per inch in New York City each season, and back-to-back snow storms have emptied the city's $38 million snow removal budget. But offsetting the cost of building solar roads by trading in snow plows is a drop in the bucket. It would take more than 10 billion solar panels to cover the more than 3 million miles of roadway and 25,000 square miles of driveways and parking lots in the U.S. At $6,900 a panel, wholesale replacing of old asphalt with new solar road panels is a nonstarter. And then there's the question of efficacy. Will solar-powered heating elements be able to work through a long winter night Or what about the ability to work during extended periods of thick cloud cover during storms With the prototype completed, Brusaw is working to test his technology in a parking lot or stretch of road in Idaho. But in the future, the former military engineer envisions the world's entire highway infrastructure being made of solar roadways. Roads at night will be powered by energy generated by roads on the other side of the globe where the sun is still shining. Until then, a cheaper snow-melting road model is also being developed by Rajib Mallick, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His model heats roads without using photovoltaic panels or cells. Mallick and his colleagues are designing a system of heat-absorbing roadways with embedded pipes filled with freeze-resistant fluid. The fluid is heated in warm weather and stored in insulated chambers. The fluid is sent through the roadway pipes during cold weather. Mallick estimates that it will cost $12,500 for every 164 feet of pipe and should be able to make up for its costs after six months. Both methods will come much too late to help deal with the current storm blanketing half the U.S. Until these concepts become reality, most drivers will have to rely on the old-fashioned technology of snow plows, shovels, and elbow grease.
If you happen to have your preciousiPhone stolen from you in the broadness of daylight, you might wish that you might be helped in your quest for justice by something fast and airborne. One distressed iPhone owner in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, enjoyed just such fortune after her was iPhone stolen in a hospital.According to the Age, the alleged perpetrator, a 16-year-old, sped away with the iPhone on a bike. Which was, coincidentally, also allegedly purloined illegally from its owner.Steal one, and the flying squad may give chase.(Credit:CC Gonzalo Baeza Hernandez/Flickr)It just so happened that the police had a helicopter flying around in the vicinity. The Age doesn't record what the chopper might have been doing up there. Perhaps there just isn't enough crime in Melbourne, so the pilot flew out for a stroll and a little lunch. However, once he was told that the iPhone was equipped with a GPS app, the pilot gave flying chase.I imagine it is a little easier chasing a boy on a bike than a former USC running back in a Ford Bronco. So it is unsurprising the teen hopped off the bike and onto a tram.Sadly for him, but happily for the iPhone owner, the police are very well aware of tram routes, and he was arrested. Ill luck, like trams, often comes in multiples. So who can be astonished that police also reportedly found a little marijuana on his personI see a future in which little remote-controlled planes, armed with Spider-Man-like webs, will be sent into the sky every time a miscreant dares to thieve away the lifeblood that is an iPhone.

0 Vote(s)

Nokia, the world&'s largest mobile phone maker, dedicated a new office building in Silicon Valley today, and its leaders promised that good things are coming soon.Stephen Elop, the former Microsoft executive who in September was appointed chief executive of Nokia, is planning to make a major announcement during a speech to investors in London on Feb. 11. As its rivals move fast in the growing market for smartphones and tablets, Nokia doesn&'t want anyone to forget that it&'s still the biggest player and isn&'t going away.Nokia isn&'t saying exactly what he&'ll talk about, but it says the announcement is a strategic one. The New York Times says Nokia may throw its support behind Microsoft&'s Windows Phone 7 software. That would be a huge change, since Nokia has been committed to its Symbian operating system for a long time and has been developing the Meego smartphone and tablet software with Intel for some time. Rich Green (pictured) chief technology officer of Nokia, was at the Silicon Valley building dedication today and said in a brief conversation that he is very impressed with Nokia&'s willingness to embrace change and turn the ship around. Elop got tongues wagging on Jan. 27 when he said that Nokia was open to &''create and/or join other ecosystems.&''Green, a former Sun Microsystems software executive, joined the company eight months ago and is eager to help get it on track. It dominates the market for feature phones (the new Nokia office&'s lounge has a display of all of Nokia&'s phones, pictured), but in smartphones, it has stumbled. Apple&'s iPhone and the Google Android operating system, and its various hardware supporters, have proven to be formidable competition. The Finnish company&'s growth has slowed, and it replaced its CEO because of market share losses. In the fourth quarter, Nokia&'s share of the global smartphone market fell from 40 percent a year ago to 31 percent. Profit declined 21 percent. In the U.S. in the third quarter, Nokia&'s market share was a tiny 2 percent in the U.S., according to strategy analytics.Yet Nokia officials offered reminders that they have cool technologies such as Qt, (pronounced cute), which partners such as Netflix use to create TV-based web movie download applications. Qt, available for free, has won a loyal following for its ease-of-use as a tool for developers to create applications on a wide variety of web-based platforms. In Silicon Valley, Nokia&'s new office occupies about five floors of an office building in Sunnyvale, Calif., and it has a bunch of researchers in Palo Alto and Berkeley as well. At the event today, the company was courting all sorts of mobile developers, encouraging them to get to know the company and partner with it. Green wouldn&'t say what was happening on Feb. 11. But he said it will indeed be big news that will signal the direction of the company in the future.Previous Story: Verizon halts iPhone pre-orders due to huge demandPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: meego, Qt, smartphones, Symbian, tablets, Windows Phone 7Companies: Apple, Google, Microsoft, nokiaPeople: Rich Green, Stephen Elop Tags: meego, Qt, smartphones, Symbian, tablets, Windows Phone 7Companies: Apple, Google, Microsoft, nokiaPeople: Rich Green, Stephen ElopDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Canadian game startups can look forward to receiving private support from a Montreal incubator program announced at a video game finance conference in Toronto. The FounderFuel accelerator program by Montreal venture capital group Real Ventures will launch this summer, said Mark McLeod, a partner at FounderFuel. He addressed more than 200 game developers, executives and financiers attending the two-day GameON Finance conference. The effort shows that the Canadians are bent on embracing games as a way to create new startups and jobs through financing and incentives. In fact, the Canadians have launched an all-out effort to lure American game companies, giving incentives. Electronic Arts and THQ are among those building big game studios in Canada as a result. With FounderFuel, small companies can benefit from Canada&'s interest in games as well. The program lasts for 12 weeks. It offers funding up to $50,000 and mentorship to test the viability of ideas and teams chosen to participate in the accelerator, McLeod said. The planned incubator rounds out Real Ventures&' investment profile, which is focused on software-based Internet, mobile, digital media, social and casual gaming startups. So far, the young venture firm has invested in two startups, Fabric Technologies and email platform DokDok.Reached in Germany after the conference, McLeod confirmed that the accelerator would tap funds from Real Ventures&' existing $45 million seed fund.&''What we don&'t know yet is whether we will run separate sessions for Web apps and games or one blended session,&'' McLeod said.Real Ventures launched its fund in October 2010, aimed at providing seed capital to startups that require less than $1 million &8212' especially those that need than $500,000 &8212' to go from concept to confirming a business model. The venture capital and private equity partnership evolved out of the $5 million Montreal Startup fund, initiated by a group of the city&'s entrepreneurs.Next Story: RIM begins limited production of BlackBerry PlayBook tablet Previous Story: Samsung sells 2M Galaxy Tabs, 80M phones, in record-breaking quarterPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: GameON Finance, incubator, video gamesCompanies: Real VenturesPeople: Mark McLeod Tags: GameON Finance, incubator, video gamesCompanies: Real VenturesPeople: Mark McLeod Have news to share Launching a startup Email: tips@venturebeat.comVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
Herea4a4s a good example of how going free can boost a mobile startupa4a4s profile. RunKeeper Pro, a popular fitness app that normally costs $9.99, announced its first free promotion yesterday and saw a huge spike in downloads &8212' this morning it climbed to number six on the Apple App Store charts, passing the a4Alitea4 version of iPhone game sensation Angry Birds.RunKeeper was created by Boston startup FitnessKeeper. Runners can use it to track their distance, time, pace, and more. The app wasna4a4t exactly obscure before this &8212' high-profile promotions include a partnership with location check-in app Foursquare as well as chief executive Jason Jacobsa4a4 decision to run the Boston Marathon dressed as an iPhone. Jacobs said RunKeeper Pro was downloaded 171,000 times yesterday, more than 10 times whata4a4s normal. The free promotion strategy is a common one. The goal is to get your app into the top-selling lists of the App Store, where the increased visibility will keep the downloads coming. In RunKeepera4a4s case, Jacobs said this was a good time for the promotion because people are feeling motivated around New Yeara4a4s to get fit.But how is FitnessKeeper going to make money from all these free downloads Jacobs told me:For where we are now, the most important thing for us heading into 2011 is building a big, engaged community that is actively using RunKeeper to help achieve their fitness goals. We do plan to monetize along the way, but our biggest objective is building a large, engaged userbase that is getting great results. The bigger and more engaged that userbase is, the more possibilities there will be down the road to monetize in interesting ways that bring even more value to these users.RunKeeper will be free until the end of January. You can find links to download the iPhone and Android versions here.FitnessKeeper has raised about $1.5 million in funding from Oa4a4Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Launch Capital, and others.Previous Story: MySpace layoffs: 550 fewer friends at the officePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: RunKeeper, RunKeeper ProCompanies: fitnesskeeperPeople: Jason Jacobs Tags: RunKeeper, RunKeeper ProCompanies: fitnesskeeperPeople: Jason JacobsAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
[Updated:RIM has responded with a vague statement, below]In an odd move of aggression, RIM has yanked the popular chat application Kik off its Blackberry phones, and has wiped its hands of anything to do with the young company. All with no reasonable explanation, according to Kik.The apparent aggressive move against a developer is strange, because RIM is trying to recover from the blow to its lead in the smartphone race &8212' and the actions against Kik may ruffle the feathers of the developer community RIM is trying to court. Both Applea4a4s iPhone and Googlea4a4s Android have gained popularity at RIMa4a4s expense, in part because RIM has been slow to offer an engaging interface with cool mobile applications.Perhaps more troubling, RIM appears to be wielding its strength against a small company that had worked with RIMa4a4s engineers closely over almost two years. RIM executives had even used Kik&'s beta version over the summer, and hadna4a4t expressed any concerns about it at that time, according to Kik chief executive Ted Livingston &8212' himself a former RIM employee. Moreover, RIM had invited Kik to be part of its developer event when RIM unveiled its Playbook tablet, and Kik had even vetted most of its press announcements with RIM to make sure the bigger company was content. Only when Kik became an overnight success &8212' seeing unprecedented growth in its first two weeks &8212' did RIM take action against it. Could it be because RIM now sees Kik as a competitor to RIMa4a4s own BlackBerry Messengera4ABang, they have a problem with it,a4 Livingston told me in a phone call, referring to the sudden about-face in attitude.
