Facebook pages opposing the Nicole Santos hack sprang up on the site in the wake of the hoax. Facebook has fixed a bug that allowed malware to take over accounts and spread overnight, but the "Nicole Santos" hoax has turned into a viral sensation. The hoax was evident on pages littered with wall posts that use profanity and urge people to "vote for Nicole Santos." The posts say that the only way to remove them is to disable them by clicking a "remove this app" link below the post. Doing so allows the malicious code to access your Facebook account and post the hoax to your friends' pages. "This spam was spread by a vulnerability in our code and we worked quickly to resolve this matter," Facebook said in a statement today. "The bug caused a small number of spam comments to be posted to users' walls, and we are in the process of cleaning up any spam it may have caused." Basically, the vulnerability allowed people to post malicious code in comments and they were treated as URLs and allowed to spread. The bug improperly allowed a specific category of URLs (javascript: URLs), according to Facebook. The company is removing the posts from users' pages, but the malware continues to spread when people click on the links. Users should not click on the links or on any links that are circulating that require people to "'Verify you account to prevent spam,' as this may be how the hack gains access to your Facebook wall in the first place," reports The Next Web. "Simply block the friend sending it to you as their account is now compromised. Once the problem has been fixed by Facebook you can re-enable them." The Facebook hoax has already taken on a life all its own. "Nicole Santos" was a trending topic on Twitter and a bunch of anti-Nicole Santos Facebook pages were created. Someone began selling a "Vote for Nicole Santos" shirt on e-commerce site Etsy. And a comedian created a rap music video called "You Just Got Hacked: A Nicole Santos Musical Parody." Which all leads us to the question of who is Nicole Santos

0 Vote(s)

Hardware acceleration has become the holy grail of browser development in the past year, as the technology to increase browser performance by tapping graphics cards to help with Web site rendering has advanced from the theoretical to the practical. Despite Opera being a longtime developer and advocate of hardware acceleration standards, and the first major browser maker to demonstrate hardware acceleration in use, no publicly released version of Opera included the technology--until today.Opera 11.50 (direct download) is a rough alpha, unstable, not for daily use, and limited to Windows computers, but it does have hardware acceleration. This means that JavaScript-based 3D rendering can be viewed using Opera, which basically means that highly complex, non-Flash-based in-site animation will be supported by the browser.A screenshot of WebGL implementation in action on Opera 11.50 alpha.(Credit:Opera)Opera promised in a blog post that its hardware acceleration will differ from its competitors. Unlike Internet Explorer 9's hardware acceleration--which is limited toWindows 7 and Vista, orFirefox 4's, which is fully available on Windows 7 and Vista but limited on Windows XP,Mac, and Linux--the way that Opera has built its hardware acceleration allows it to be used in full on any computer with the hardware to support it. This means that not only will Opera's hardware acceleration support Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Linux, but that Web-enabled televisions and devices such as smartphones will also be able to use it. Opera says that any device that uses the OpenGL ES 2 standard will work with it.The current implementation of hardware acceleration in Opera 11.50 alpha is limited to OpenGL support. A Direct3D backend is planned for future versions and before 11.50 gets pushed to the public. You can see if your installation of Opera 11.50 alpha has the OpenGL hardware acceleration working by typing opera:about into the location bar, and looking to see if the "Vega backend" entry lists "OpenGL". If it says "Software," then your computer graphics card doesn't support OpenGL 2.x hardware acceleration.

0 Vote(s)

LG&39's LW9500 TV, coming in 2011(Credit:LG)In advance of the Consumer Electronics Show next month, LG has released a teaser announcement vaguely detailing a couple of its new, high-end LED-based LCD TVs, the LW9500 and LW7700 series. The company is branding the new models under a new "Nano" moniker, which it says refers to improved local-dimming LED technology. According to the release: "An extremely thin film printed with a proprietary light dispersion pattern combined with a full array of LEDs disperses light more evenly across the screen, creating pictures that are brighter and more uniform than conventional edge-lit LED sets." The &34'nano film&34' that makes up the backlighting element of the LW9500 series.(Credit:John P. Falcone/CNET)We liked the company's local dimming models from 2010, namely the LX9500 and LE8500 series, although we complained about the unusual uniformity issues we saw, which manifested as bands of uneven lighting that were visible in some material. LG tells us that the newer sets address this issue specifically, so we're expecting them to be among the better LCD performers of 2011. Both of the new series have a similar thin-bezel design to the LX9500, putting maximum picture area into minimum cabinet, and have slimmed down the cabinet depth to "less than one inch" according to the company. The main difference between the two, as far as we can tell, is the presence of 480Hz refresh rate in the LW9500 models, while the LW7700 gets 240Hz (we don't expect to see much difference between the two based on this spec). Both can deliver 3D images and, unlike the 2010 LX9500, LG's sole 3D-compatible LCD from 2010, the 2011 sets incorporate numerous picture controls for 3D, as well as a 2D-to-3D conversion system. They'll also offer the company's revamped Internet TV platform. An LG LW9500 prototype, in the flesh.(Credit:John P. Falcone/CNET)Screen sizes range from 47 to 60 inches. Pricing and availability were not announced at press time. We expect further details at LG's CES press conference.Editors' note (7:00 p.m. PT): This post has been updated with new photos.

0 Vote(s)

Gawker&39's new look for 2011 (Credit:Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Web publisher Gawker Media plans to drastically change the way users interact with its network of sites with a redesign launching next year that lets users jump through stories and interactive advertising akin to using an RSS reader. The new design was unveiled earlier today by Gawker founder Nick Denton as being the "most significant change in the Gawker model since the launch of Gizmodo and Gawker in 2002," and something that "represents some convergence of blog, magazine and television." What that means to end users is that they'll be able to cycle through news stories from a right-hand navigation bar, without scrolling down the page like a typical site. One of the big reasons for this, Denton explained, is so that certain stories can remain pinned to the top, no matter what you're looking at, which works better with the company's high-volume publishing model.Denton noted that a large part of the change is centered on advertising, particularly balancing the cycle of breaking news content--some stories being big, and others small-- around advertisers that are choosy about where content appears. "We can't predict a surge in traffic' and often advertisers don't want to be associated with scandal, however enticing it is to readers," Denton said. "But the experience of Gawker, Deadspin and other sites shows that--once the dust has settled--advertisers flock to buzz and growth."As part of the redesign, one item that's already causing controversy is the use of video ads. These have now been integrated into the reading experience, so that readers must sit through a clip prior to reading a story. These are similar to the click-through ads found on many publishing sites (including CNET), but their placement within the site now more closely resembles content. The overall change is being attributed, in part, to the departure of two high-level Gawker sales employees, as reported by Business Insider. Gawker sales boss Chris Batty and salesman Michael Caesco have left the company due to what Denton referred to in a private employee e-mail as a "serious" divergence in strategy that "spilled over into unhealthy conflict between editorial and sales," according to the story. "However, of all media companies, Gawker Media is one that has built itself around audience growth, in the belief that advertising will follow," Denton said in the e-mail. "That isn't the only media strategy available' it just happens to be the one that we chose' and it is to that which everybody signs up when joining the company."

0 Vote(s)

Mega-famous Gorillaz front man and songwriter Damon Albarn has revealed that he has been recording the next Gorillaz album on hisiPad. Remember how the iPad is just a device for consumptionReported in music magazine NME on November 13, Albarn says, "I've made it on an iPad--I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad."The album, according to NME, could be released before Christmas this year.Albarn continued, saying, "I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record." Gorillaz fans are sure to be looking forward to this, but many techies will most likely take a look as well. The iPad has been touted as a great media consumption device, but critics have continued to knock its ability to be a productivity tool.Having a major recording artist produce an entire album on the iPad should hopefully sway some of those naysayers. What have you produced on your iPad Share your thoughts and links in the comments below!(Credit:Joe Aimonetti)

0 Vote(s)

UpdatedSB Nation, a network of local sports blogs (thata4a4s what the a4ASBa4 stands for), has raised $10.5 million in new funding led by Khosla Ventures. After news of the funding was leaked to All Things Digital, chief executive Jim Bankoff confirmed it over email. The Washington, D.C.-based company has been around since 2003, when it was known as Athletic Nation. The companya4a4s big idea is that the audience for sports news is fragmented &8212' fans care less about general news than they do about their specific sport and team. So SB Nation has built out a massive network of focused sites &8212' the company says there are currently 289 blogs in the network. At the same time, it keeps costs down by just paying its contributors a monthly stipend, acccording to an Inc magazine profile of the company.Prior to joining SB Nation in 2008, Bankoff had plenty of experience in the blog world &8212' he was an executive at AOL, where he oversaw the acquisition of blog network Weblogs.SB Nation has been growing quickly. It sees 8 million unique visitors and 40 million pageviews per month, Inc reported. (Ia4a4ve asked Bankoff if he has updated traffic numbers, and Ia4a4ll update if I hear back.) And PaidContent says that the company has almost reached the break-even point.Previous investors Accel Partners and Comcast Interactive Capital both participated in the new round, which brings SB Nationa4a4s total funding to $23.5 million.Update: Bankoff just emailed me to say that SB Nation&'s Google Analytics numbers put SB Nation at 17 million monthly uniques, while Quantcast says 9 million. Either way, the company has had consistent growth, usually doubling or tripling its traffic every year.Next Story: Call of Duty Black Ops is a test for game studio coming out of the shadows Previous Story: Attention, flight-search startups: Priceline, Expedia say hotels are where it&'s atPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: blog networks, hyperlocal news, sportsCompanies: Accel Partners, Comcast Interactive Capital, Khosla Ventures, SB NationPeople: Jim Bankoff Tags: blog networks, hyperlocal news, sportsCompanies: Accel Partners, Comcast Interactive Capital, Khosla Ventures, SB NationPeople: Jim BankoffAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.

There&'s a lot of hoopla right now that Google&'s Chrome OS has been delayed and will miss the stated release date of &''this year&''. Much of this is based off of the comment that Google CEO Eric Schmidt made last week at Web 2.0 Summit, in which he said that Chrome OS would be available sometime in &''the next few months&''. So I asked Google today if they were still sticking with the &''later this year&''&nbsp'availability&nbsp'of Chrome OS a4" the answer I got An enthusiastic &''yep!&''But just in case, I decided to follow up and ask if that meant an actual shipping product was coming or some test version of the OS The answer there was much more murky. &''We&'re not going into details at this point,&'' is what I was told.Looking over the code issues in the Chromium OS forums, it looks as if work is still progressing to knock out a lot of late-stage bugs before the OS can be released. Many of these bugs are UI-related, but several seem much more serious, as well. That said, there are a few indications that a &''beta&'' release of the OS may be drawing near. As you can see here, there are only six bugs labeled as &''ReleaseBlock-Beta&''. And almost all of them are related to the UI of buying a 3G plan from a Chrome OS-powered netbook. There&'s also a &''ReleaseBlock-Nominate&'' list, which features 38 bugs. There are other indications that Google is removing certain features that contain &''show-stopping bugs&'' in order to get a beta out there. So, if I had to guess, I would bet that we&'ll see some sort of Chrome OS beta launch in December. But that will disappoint many people, as we were originally told that ChromeBooks (Chrome OS-powered netbooks) would be here in time for the holidays. Unless some vendors are willing to ship a very beta product, that&'s probably not going to happen. But maybe there is hope. All About Microsoft&'s Mary-Jo Foley says she talked to Google recently about the OS:I had a chance to ask the Googlers about Chrome OS &nbsp'recently, and was told that a preview version of Google OS is still going to hit this year and be available in test form on several new form factors.Of course, she also notes that &''Google, like Microsoft, is not going to have a viable iPad competitor available in time for holiday 2010.&'' But Google is already distancing itself from the talk that Chrome OS is meant for tablets. At the same Web 2.0 Summit talk which featured Schmidt&'s comments above, he also said that Chrome OS was meant for keyboards, while Android was meant for touch. That said, there&'s no denying that ChromeBooks and iPads are very likely to eventually go head to head in the market simply because both will likely cost around the same amount of money. And despite Schmidt&'s comments, Google has been thinking about Chrome OS in the tablet space as well.CrunchBase InformationGoogle Chrome OSInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
