Israel is considering allowing Google's photo-snapping Street View service into the country, but the government is worried about the privacy and security implications.A team headed by Israeli Minister Dan Meridor on Monday met to discuss the pros and cons of Street View photographing neighborhoods across Israel, according to a press release. The controversial service is due to launch in Israel soon, the release said. The government sees benefits in Street View's ability to boost tourism and enhance the country's image. But there are clear concerns as well.In addition to the usual worries that Street View triggers over privacy, there's also the strong potential for terrorists to use the information to help plot attacks. Experts were invited to the Monday meeting to address fears over both privacy and public security. No details were released about the specific discussions. But the team is looking to its experts to help address some of the ongoing concerns even as Israel cooperates with Google to start up Street View."The ministerial team instructed the experts to work to protect vital public interests regarding this innovative project," the release said. "It was decided that cooperation with Google would continue in order to operate the service in Israel as soon as possible."Google so far is mum on any role Street View may play in Israel or any discussions it may have with the Israeli government. Responding to a request for comment, a Google spokesperson e-mailed CNET the following statement yesterday:"Street View is a popular feature of Google Maps which is already available in 27 countries. We aim to offer the benefits of street-level imagery to users all around the world, however, we have nothing specific to announce at this time."Street View has landed Google in hot water across a number of countries, many of which have complained that snapping photos of local people and streets is an invasion of privacy. Google stirred up more trouble last year when it revealed that Street View accidentally collected private data from unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)There are two stories that star the Samsung Galaxy Indulge. In one (the romance-adventure), the intrepid Indulge is MetroPCS' first smartphone foray into 4G territory. What's more, the humble Android 2.2 Froyo handset goes on to become the world's first commercially available LTE smartphone. Cue the crescendo! In the other (the dystopia,) the Indulge is a good-but-not-great Galaxy S phone that's costly even for a non-contract phone. At least, it isn't sensational when compared to its premium cousins like the Epic 4G. Our anti-hero's 4G also doesn't appear to be as fast in our (admittedly cursory) test. That could be the result of many factors--Metro's spectrum and infrastructure versus Sprint's, LTE versus WiMax, hardware versus hardware. That said, if we narrow our focus to MetrPCS' hardware lineup, the Indulge is a great choice for Metro customers seeking a speedy smartphone. Watch my video, learn the details, and peruse photos in the Indulge review.

0 Vote(s)

On stage at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona yesterday, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop (pictured right) announced that the companya4a4s first priority now, after partnering with Microsoft to use Windows Phone 7 on its devices, is to beat Android. The company also hinted that wea4a4ll see its Windows Phone 7 devices this year, and it confirmed the concept designs that were floating around the web a few days ago.Elop, who hails from Microsoft, discussed the nature of Nokiaa4a4s relationship with the software company. He said Nokia was considering becoming yet another Android phone manufacturer but that the prospect of being a premiere WP7 partner was more enticing. &''A decision to go with Windows Phone creates a very different dynamic. Windows Phone is a challenger. It becomes a three-horse race,a4 he said. The companya4a4s decision may have also been swayed by European cellular carriers, who feared the worst if Nokia adopted Android.Elop said Nokia will be paying Microsoft royalties to use Windows Phone 7 but that it will also save money by reducing its operating expense since it will no longer need to develop an entire OS on its own. Nokia will also contribute services to Windows Phone 7 that other manufacturers will be able to take advantage of, and he went on to say, a4AWe&'re contributing the fact that we&'re making Windows Phone a challenger.&''Microsoft will also add a4Asubstantial monetary valuea4 to Nokia because of its contributions to WP7, which Elop specifically said is measured in the billions, not millions. That could mean that Microsoft effectively outbid Google to convince Nokia to use its software. Elop also mentioned that Nokia will see a new source of revenue through advertising.Together with Nokiaa4a4s Jo Harlow, Elop also confronted some tough questions about Nokiaa4a4s new partnership. When asked about the widely reported employee walkout on Friday, Harlow seemed understanding of the emotional journey for Nokia engineers, especially with word that Elop plans to make thousands of job cuts. But optimistically, she points out that the deal is also exciting the US market, which hasna4a4t had much reason to care about Nokia products for the last few years. When asked if he was indeed the seventh largest Microsoft shareholder (a rumor sparked by his appearance on a shareholder chart with around $3 million worth of stock), Elop said those claims were not true. a4AThat would be a substantial amount of money that I dona4a4t have,a4 he said. Elop pointed out that he was legally prohibited from selling his shares when he first joined Nokia, but once that was lifted he began selling. Once talks began with Microsoft about partnering with Nokia, he was forced to stop selling once again. One brave audience member shouted out, a4AAre you a Trojan Horsea4 &8212' a reference to the fact that Microsoft was reportedly trying to buy Nokia last year, but with Elop in charge, he can now run the company to Microsofta4a4s benefit. Elop pointed out that the entire management team at Nokia was involved in the decision to move to Windows Phone 7 and that the final decision wasna4a4t made until last Thursday night.Via EngadgetCalling all developers: We want to write up your app for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight!
CrowdGather, a company that says it owns more than 65,000 online forums, has just completed a $7.85 million round of funding through a private placement.Chief executive Sanjay Sabnani said the money should help the startup continue acquiring more forums. He&'s open about the fact that his strategy isna4a4t focused on technology but rather is a a4Aroll upa4 of existing sites. With investments and valuations climbing in the startup world, Sabnani said he felt a little more urgency to raise the money so he can close some deals before theya4a4re out of his price range.Forums arena4a4t exactly a sexy topic right now &8212' in a recent interview with the New Tech Post site, Sabnani was asked, a4ABut havena4a4t social media sites subsumed the role of forumsa4 He discussed the question in-depth, but he also gave me a more succinct answer yesterday.a4AEveryone&'s trying to chip away at this &8212' Yelp with reviews, Facebook with chitchat, Quora with Q&amp'A,a4 Sabnani said. a4ABut if you&'re into coins, you want to go to a site called CoinTalk.a4For another example of forum sites growing and evolving, you can read my coverage of how Topix is refocusing on politics. The Woodland Hills, Calif. company launched in 2008, but it has been publicly-traded since April of that year. Sabnani said that with his connections at the time, it made more sense to raise money through the public markets rather than venture capital &8212' although that decision looked a little less smart after the market crash in the fall of 2008. In addition to funding acquisitions, Sabnani said the new capital will put CrowdGather in a better position as it applies to one of the national listings. (Sabnani wona4a4t say which one, but those listings include NASDAQ, the New York Stock Exchange, and an American Stock Exchange.)Next Story: Ubera4a4s car service comes to Palo Alto with new rates Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Solyndra&'s star fades, admits to mistakes' Khosla says new biofuel IPO comingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: forumsCompanies: CrowdGatherPeople: Sanjay Sabnani Tags: forumsCompanies: CrowdGatherPeople: Sanjay SabnaniAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
