Enerkem today said that it raised $60 million from fuel refiner Valero and others to build plants that convert municipal waste to biofuels.Enerkem gasifies waste and then uses a catalyst to convert the sythetic gas to fuel or other chemicals.(Credit:Enerkem)The company said that investment from Valero could lead to a commercial agreement between them. Other companies to invest include existing investor Waste Management, Rho Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures, and Cycle Capital. There are a number of companies with methods for converting municipal garbage into fuels, but Enerkem is one of the farthest along. The company said the money will finance construction of future plants and its third ethanol plant in Pontotoc, Mississippi, which is slated to produce 20 million gallons a year. Enerkem started construction of a garbage-to-fuel plant in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, last year with a capacity of 1.3 million gallons a year.Rather than burn waste to get usable energy, Enerkem sorts recyclable material and then gasifies the remaining waste to make fuel. The waste is heated to the point where it breaks down into its component parts, creating what is called synthetic gas of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The gas is filtered and then, using a catalyst, is made into ethanol or other chemicals.A 10-million gallon Enerkem plant can convert 115,000 tons of non-recyclable trash per year.Several companies have pursued cellulosic ethanol, or making ethanol from non-food sources, such as wood chips, agricultural residue, or grasses, but most plans have not progressed as fast as expected. In addition to Enerkem, there are a number of other companies seeking to use municipal solid waste as a feedstock for fuel or power.

0 Vote(s)

Researchers have unveiled encouraging results of the first human randomized control trial of a procedure called therapeutic renal denervation to reduce and control hypertension in patients where medications aren't working. The announcement came at this week's Society of Interventional Radiology's 36th Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago.Hypertension drugs don&39't work in all patients.(Credit:HazPhotos/Flickr)While the study involved only 106 adults and was funded by the manufacturer of the catheter and generator, the procedure--which uses a catheter-based probe to emit high-frequency energy directly into the renal artery to deactivate nerves linked to high blood pressure--does appear to be effective. That's particularly notable because these patients are reported to have "resistant" hypertension that has not responded to drugs."Renal denervation, a minimally invasive, effective treatment, appears to be safe in the short term with a low incidence of local complications," says Marc Sapoval, professor of clinical radiology and chair of the cardiovascular radiology department at Hopital Europeen Georges-Pompidou in Paris. "After six months, 39 percent of patients receiving the endovascular denervation treatment had reached the recommended blood pressure level and, overall, 50 percent of patients showed a measurable benefit of the intervention."Sapoval explains that the renal sympathetic system, which comprises the nerves that carry signals between the kidney and the brain, plays a key role in regulating blood pressure levels. If blood pressure goes up, the heart has to work harder, so the patient's risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke also rises. In 2009, the first human trial (subscription required)--a small proof-of-concept study of 45 patients with resistant hypertension--also showed that renal denervation caused "substantial and sustained" reduction in blood pressure without serious adverse effects. For now, Sapoval's initial study group has been expanded to a multicenter, randomized controlled trial at 24 international sites. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will also be conducting a large trial involving more than 100 U.S.-based interventional radiology teams.

0 Vote(s)

Control4&39's Energy Management System (EMS) 100 will be used by Cisco in smart-grid deals.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)Cisco Systems has invested in Control4 and intends to use Control4's home automation software in large deals with utilities and cities. The deal, announced today, calls for Cisco to sell Control4 products, such as its home energy management dashboard, under the Cisco brand and to create closer ties between the two companies' products. Cisco invested an undisclosed amount but was the lead investor in a recent round of private funding in Salt Lake City-based Control4.Control4's software is like an operating system for connected devices in a home, including consumer electronics, home appliances, lights, and thermostats, said company CEO Will West. Having access to Cisco's sales force and relationships with cities and utilities will accelerate the move to the connected home and home automation, he said. High-end home media systems use Control4's software and touch-screen controllers to, for example, stream video and audio to different rooms. Its home energy management system, a small dashboard device tied to a utility meter, has been picked by some utilities as part of smart-grid programs.Cisco intends to tie Control4's software to its consumer products, such as its home networking gear, consumer videoconferencing, and voice over IP phones, said Paul Fulton, vice president and general manager of Cisco's prosumer business unit. Cisco also has an Internet-based development platform for writing applications for these connected devices. The goal is to have a full suite of products when selling home automation to utilities, helping consumers to improve efficiency by controlling and monitoring energy use. It also ties into Cisco's "smart and connected communities" strategy for urban development through which cities invest in a modern technology infrastructure, including broadband access and connected devices. Cisco already has its own home energy management system, similar to Control 4's Energy Management System 100. Fulton said that Cisco's product, which costs more, will continue to be offered to utilities. The deal between the two companies is not exclusive.

0 Vote(s)

There were some surprising tidbits in Amazon's quarterly earnings release today.Sales topped $10 billion for the first time. In spite of the threat thatApple's iPad presents for its Kindle e-book reader, Amazon announced that its Kindle e-book sales now top paperback book sales' they were already more popular than hardcover books. However, the 36 percent increase in revenue, unfortunately, still fell short of Wall Street's high expectations for the steadily growing e-commerce company.Sales reached $12.95 billion for 2010's holiday-heavy fourth quarter, up from $9.52 billion in the fourth quarter of the previous year. Amazon noted that this 36 percent increase would have been 37 percent had it not been for the $139 million shaved off it from unfavorable changes in foreign exchange rates. Operating income was $474 million, down slightly from $476 million in the fourth quarter of 2009.Amazon had expected that Kindle book sales would surpass paperback book sales in the second quarter of 2011 (the count excludes free Kindle titles), so the milestone was reached earlier than expected. Also in last year's final quarter, it sold three times as many Kindle books as hardcover books.

0 Vote(s)

The wireless charging Powermat is due in the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, and in other GM brand cars by mid-2012.(Credit:GM)Universal chargers for portable electronics will someday seem quaint when wireless charging technology becomes ubiquitous, and that may happen soonest in yourcar.General Motors has partnered with Powermat to incorporate its wireless charging mats into car interiors, both companies announced from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today.Starting with the Chevy Volt, drivers and passengers will be able to lay things like phones and MP3 players on the center console and have them wirelessly charge while they're sitting there.GM said consumers will be able to get the tech for the 2011 Chevy Volt, and that it will be available for other Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac brand cars by mid-2012.As part of the development deal, the automaker's venture capital subsidiary, GM Ventures, has invested $5 million in Powermat--no small matter in a very competitive environment. Several companies including Fujitsu, Palm, Pure Energy Solutions, ElectroHub, Green Plug and WiiPower have been introducing wireless charging technology using tiny portable mats for a single device, desktop mats for multiple devices, and wireless rechargeable batteries. All of them have had varied ways of dealing with the issue of compatibility.Wireless charging mats generally work by first using a receiver somewhere on a portable device that magnetically connects it to a charge point on a mat that is plugged in to an electricity source. Once fully charged that receiver sends a signal to the mat, which then halts further electricity from passing through to the device. In addition to the convenience of no wires, charging mats offer an energy-efficient alternative to chargers, which often continue to suck down electricity even after a device is fully charged. Many companies use receivers that snap on to the device to be charged, while others offer special rechargeable batteries that act as receivers to us in existing devices.Powermat tackles the universality issue by offering a receiver case or a flat back panel receiver that snaps on to the device, depending on the type of device to be charged. Currently, the company makes snap-on receivers for products made by Apple, Research In Motion, HTC, Motorola, and Nintendo.Powermat already sells a desktop charging mat and a folding portable charging mat. It's also developing something it calls the Powermat Netbook which is capable of charging a Netbook, as well as multiple portable devices at once.

0 Vote(s)

The Empire State Building in conjunction with the Clinton Climate Initiative is attempting to set an example when it comes to energy retrofits and management.(Credit:Empire State Building Company)As more companies realize the savings involved in running large commercial buildings more efficiently when it comes to energy, sales of automated building energy management systems are poised to soar. The U.S. market for such systems will grow to $2.4 billion annually by 2016 compared to seeing $900 million in revenue for 2010, according to the "Building Energy Management Systems" report released today by Pike Research.Products include optimization software for a particular building's needs, as well as analytics that tap in to smart grids to predict peak supply and demand scenarios and adjust internal systems accordingly."Commercial building efficiency in general, and the building energy management systems market more specifically, are emerging as hot growth areas due to the strong return on investment that such deployments can bring to building owners and managers," Jevan Fox, research analyst at Pike Research, said in a statement. While the average homeowner might have to wait years to see a return on certain types of energy efficiency investments, large commercial buildings because of their scale see a quick return for relatively little outlay, according to Pike Research. The report also predicts that health care, university, and commercial facilities will be the three biggest areas of growth, and that as contracts for existing building management systems come up for review or renewal most companies will choose to switch to a BEMS.The report directly coincides with a Lux Research report released earlier this month that predicted a wave of acquisitions with regard to building management and IT.The Lux report predicted major building management companies will continue to acquire smaller companies with BEMS products, while tech heavyweights like Microsoft and IBM will develop their own systems and try to pick up business in the space.

0 Vote(s)

Like games Here&39's your chance to save a few bucks on six indie champs--and support a worthy cause in the process.(Credit:Screenshot by Rick Broida)'Tis the season to scoreiPhone,iPod, andiPad games on the cheap. First, Electronic Arts cut some 70 games to 99 cents each, a promotion that's likely to run through the holidays. Next, Gameloft and Namco got in on the 99-cent act, as CNET's Joe Aimonetti reported earlier today. Now, even indie developers are extending some 99-cent love, as evidenced by the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale. But in this case, there's more to it than just a price drop: the six participating developers plan to donate a third of the proceeds to charity. The games on sale include Canabalt, Drop7, Eliss, Osmos, Solipskier, and Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor. Not exactly well-known titles, admittedly, but each one has a user rating of at least four stars in the App Store. (Osmos is an App Store Hall-of-Famer, and both Drop7 and Spider appeared on several "top-10" lists.) Prior to the sale, which runs until Dec. 31, each game sold for $2-4 apiece. The developers will donate a third of the net proceeds (i.e. what's left after Apple takes its share) to Child's Play, which collects toys, games, books, and cash for kids in children's hospitals around the world. So in addition to scooping up some great games on the cheap, you can give a little extra cheer to sick kids. While you're at it, why not check out the Windows Holiday Bundle, which also supports a very worthwhile cause (Charity:Water). It's not iPhone-related, but it does give you $220 worth of goodies for just 19 bucks.

0 Vote(s)

Apple reported moments ago that it had a huge first fiscal quarter, with record revenues and earnings that blew away Wall Street estimates. The solid report suggests that the company is executing well across all of its PC, phone, and music player markets even as it runs into tougher opposition from supporters of Google&'s Android operating system. Today&'s report may be one of its most closely watched ever, since Apple said on Monday that CEO Steve Jobs is on medical leave once again. In after-hours trading, Apple&'s stock is up 2.08 percent (earlier today it fell 2.25 percent).Apple continues to be the biggest player in tablets with the iPad and in smartphones with the iPhone, but it&'s getting harder for the company to beat the collective sales of all its rivals.Revenues were $26.74 billion, up from $15.68 billion a year ago. Net income was $6 billion, up from $3.38 billion a year ago. Earnings per share were $6.43 a share, compared with $3.67 a year ago.Analysts were expecting revenue to come in at $24.38 billion, up 55 percent from a year ago. Earnings per share were expected to be $5.38 a share, compared to Apple&'s own guidance of $4.80 a share and revenue of $23 billion.Apple reported that it sold 4.13 million Macs, up 23 percent from a year ago. The Mac sales have now grown 19 quarters in a row, although overall market share relative to Windows PCs is still relatively low. Apple sold 16.24 million iPhones, up 86 percent, and it sold 19.45 million iPods, down 7 percent. The company sold 7.33 million iPads in the quarter. Analysts were expecting the number of iPhones sold in the quarter to hit around 15.6 million, with 17.75 million iPods sold, 4.08 Macs sold, and 6.15 iPads sold, according to Fortune magazine. Apple did not disclose how many Apple TV units it sold during the quarter.a4AWe had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales,a4 said Jobs in a statement. a4AWe are firing on all cylinders and wea4a4ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers cana4a4t wait to get their hands on.a4a4AWe couldna4a4t be happier with the performance of our business, generating $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter,a4 said Peter Oppenheimer, Applea4a4s CFO. a4ALooking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $22 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.90.a4In the earnings call, Oppenheimer said the company was &''extremely pleased&'' that each major category of products set sales records. The new MacBook Air (launched in October) fueled sales of the Mac, as did the new MacBook Pro. The company ended the quarter with three to four weeks of inventory. During the quarter, Apple launched its new Mac App Store, which saw 1 million downloads on the first day alone.iPod share is more than 70 percent in the U.S., according to NPD. During the quarter, the iPhone sales reportedly grew faster than the 70 percent for the overall smartphone market, according to IDC. Enterprise customers are embracing the iPhone, with 88 percent of the top Fortune 100 companies testing or deploying it. Enterprises continue to add the iPhone to the list of approved IT products for their employees, Oppenheimer said. About 2.5 million iPhones are in inventory now.iPad sales were sequentially up 3 million units, and the device is available in 46 countries now. Another 15 will come on board in January. Oppenheimer said 80 of the Fortune 100 companies are deploying the iPad, with customers including JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo. Channel inventory is up 525,000 units for the iPad, with four to six weeks of sales in inventory now. Apple has now sold 15 million iPads in its first three quarters.Tim Cook, chief operating officer, said that he is hopeful demand will be strong for the Verizon iPhone. He said Apple has a significant backlog of orders for the iPhone 4 and the company is trying to fill demand as fast as it can. He said the results of the company&'s investment in China over the past couple of years have been &''staggering.&'' Revenue from greater China was $2.6 billion for Apple, up four-fold from a year ago.&''We are not sitting still,&'' Cook said, regarding the company&'s various rivals. &''We have a first mover advantage. We have an incredible user experience. An enormous number of apps and a huge ecosystem. We are very confident on entering into a fight with anyone.&''Apple retail sales were $3.85 billion, up 95 percent from a year ago. iPad sales were very strong in the stores. The stores sold 851,000 Macs, up 24 percent from a year ago. Half were sold to customers who didn&'t have Macs before. Average international store sales are higher than U.S. average store sales, and the four stores in China are among the biggest of all. Retail margin was above $1 billion for the first time. Gross profit margin was 38.5 percent, up 250 basis points above Apple&'s estimate.Apple said Monday in a statement that Jobs, the iconic chief executive of Apple was leaving the company for an unspecified time for health reasons. Chief operating officer Tim Cook is running the companya4a4s day-to-day operations in the meantime. Jobs has taken leave for health reasons three times in the last several years. The latest announcement took a small toll on Apple&'s stock price this morning, knocking it down about 2 percent. The stock closed at $340.65 a share, down $7.83 (-2.25 percent) compared with $348.48 a share on Friday. As noted above, after-hours trading has the stock at $347.72, up 2.0 percent.Apple&'s market capitalization is still well above $300 billion, and its value is still well above that of companies such as Microsoft ($245 billion), Dell ($27 billion), and Hewlett-Packard ($101 billion).Apple still has plenty of room to grow. The company is shipping its Verizon iPhone this quarter. Apple&'s iPad 2 is expected to ship around April, and the company is expected to field a new iPhone 5 by the summer. The question is whether Android-based rivals such as Motorola, which is launching its Xoom tablet and Atrix 4G smartphone soon, will get to market with cool products in a more timely fashion. Getting to the faster network speeds of 4G, for instance, is crucial not only for Apple but for its rival as well.Apple stock was halted in after-hours trading. Apple now has $59.7 billion in cash, up $8.7 billion from the previous quarter. Apple executed long-term supply agreements with three vendors. It will make payments in big chunks for those contracts, including $650 million this quarter.[money image: Business Insider]Next Story: First cable channel, WealthTV, hits Roku.
