(Credit:Carnegie Mellon University)As part of a bid to claim the Google Lunar X Prize, Carnegie Mellon University and Astrobotic Technology have completed structural assembly work on a lunar lander designed to deliver a roving robot to the surface of the moon in 2014. Taking off from Cape Canaveral, the lander will ride on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which had a successful maiden flight last year, on its four-day journey to the moon. Red Rover will explore the Apollo 11 landing site.(Credit:Astrobotic)The craft will attempt a pinpoint landing, which would be a significant achievement. After deploying, the solar-powered, four-wheeled Red Rover will beam HD video in 3D to Earth as it explores the moon's Sea of Tranquility. The Astrobotic-CMU team wants to reach the Apollo 11 landing site, which hasn't been seen directly in 40 years (though NASA has imaged it), and film it in HD. The $30 million Lunar X Prize is aimed at fostering the first private launch that sends a robot to the moon. It has to travel some 500 yards and send video, images, and data to Earth. The 5-foot-tall, half-ton aluminum lander has solar panels that can provide 500 watts of power, rechargeable batteries, eight thrusters, and four fuel tanks carrying almost 2 tons of propellant. It will be able to carry the 173-pound Red Rover, which is mostly covered with solar panels under its camera mast, as well as 242 pounds of commercial payload. The lander is set to be tested for structural integrity at a Boeing facility in El Segundo, Calif. Check out some pics of the assembly here. Below is a video showing what Red Rover might look like as it negotiates the lunar terrain during its two weeks on the moon. What will it find at Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's old hangout

0 Vote(s)

The new and improved Volkswagen Beetle.(Credit:Volkswagen)The Volkswagen Beetle enjoys a long and storied history. And now, it's moving into its third generation. The Volkswagen Beetle is arguably one of the most recognizablecars on the road. First launched in the U.S. in 1949, the car was a staple in the country for 30 years. Over that span, Volkswagen sold nearly 5 million Beetles in the U.S. alone. After being discontinued, the Beetle was brought back in 1998. Through 2010, the New Beetle's sales topped 477,000 units in the U.S. All told, more than 22.5 million Beetles (first- and second-generation) have been built. The latest Beetle, which Volkswagen is calling its third-generation model, features a new design that might surprise those who have grown accustomed to its iconic look. According to Volkswagen, the third-generation Beetle is "substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline." In fact, the 2012 Beetle is 3.3 inches wider than its predecessor and half an inch shorter in height. The body is also 6 inches longer. In addition, the Beetle comes with a panoramic top that's 80 percent larger than the previous option, and offers both a "turbo-charged TDI Clean Diesel and turbo-charged gasoline engines." The Clean Diesel engine, the company says, is the most fuel-efficient option ever available in a Beetle, offering 40 miles per gallon on the highway and 29 miles per gallon in the city.On the tech side, consumers should find quite a bit to like. The 2012 Beetle comes standard with eight speakers. If customers opt for the premium VIII audio system, they will get an integrated CD changer, along with an SD card slot and touch screen. In addition, customers can opt for the first time to get navigation in the Beetle. For better sound, customers can choose the Fender Premium Audio System, which delivers "an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power," Volkswagen said. For the first time, Volkswagen is also bringing keyless access to the Beetle, letting owners open the doors and start the engine without requiring an ignition key.The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle is scheduled to launch in the U.S. in September or October. Volkswagen has yet to reveal pricing.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)Since the launch of iOS 4.3, severaliPhone users have complained their batteries are draining much faster. I haven't personally noticed a difference, but for those of you who have, you'll happy to know that iOS 4.3.1 unexpectedly launched today. (It was rumored earlier this week that it might launch in two weeks).Though there aren't many details about the release besides minor security and maintenance updates, it is likely that this early launch for the iOS means that Apple is trying to smooth out the bugs and hopefully take care of battery drain quickly. Please let us know in the comments if you've experienced issues with iOS 4.3 and whether you noticed a difference in this latest update. This week's apps include a well-designed barcode scanner and a game that challenges you to race through traffic on a motorcycle.Browse through your scanning history and tap to find places to purchase products.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Shop Savvy Premium Barcode Scanner (99 cents) is certainly not the only barcode reader in the iTunes App Store, but it offers some unique features to make it a handy shopping companion when checking prices. Like other apps in the category, ShopSavvy lets you use your iPhone camera to "scan" a barcode then view the item and prices from various locations. The interface is set up to be as simple as possible, but it offers nice touches such as the ability to initiate a scan by swiping upward on the product display screen. After a barcode scan, you're presented with an image of the item and given places to shop for it online, at nearby stores (Shop Savvy uses your location), online reviews of the product, and the ability to share your findings via e-mail, Twitter, or Facebook. Shop Savvy keeps your search history so you can go back and find things you wanted to buy, but you also have the ability to categorize your items in lists that are neatly arranged in folders you create.Overall, Shop Savvy is a great barcode scanner with a slick interface that's easy to use. If you're out making a big purchase and want to check prices in other locations, this app is a great thing to have on your iPhone.Even in the early part of the game you&39'll need to watch out for signaling drivers.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Lane Splitter (99 cents) is a fun distance game that challenges you to weave through traffic at high speed on a motorcycle. The graphics are crystal clear on the iPhone 4, with well detailedcars and interesting scenery as you blow by on your motorcycle. The idea is that you're late to your wedding, and you must speed through traffic wearing your tux in order to make it on time. The game uses the iPhone accelerometer for steering and touching the screen gives you a burst of speed that results in a wheelie and less control--perfect for getting out of the way when cars merge into your lane as long as you're careful.Lane Splitter starts out fairly easy with only a few cars to avoid that mostly stay in their lanes. As you progress, the game gets faster and you'll see more cars signaling lane changes forcing you to act quickly to keep going. Later in the game, you'll encounter traffic jams and get bonus points for slipping between cars (lane-splitting). I was able to get quite far after only a few tries, but a look at the leaderboards (accessed within the game) told me I have a long way to go.Overall, with smooth, good-looking graphics, excellent accelerometer controls, and changing traffic conditions as you race, Lane Splitter makes for a fun time-waster.What's your favorite iPhone app Do you have a better shopping companion app than Shop Savvy What's your best distance on Lane Splitter Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

LONDON/BRUSSELS--The European Union locked all accounts in its carbon market today, after a security breach, seeking to protect the battered reputation of the EU's main weapon against climate change. The United States, Japan, and Australia have all delayed implementing similar cap-and-trade programs, and the latest glitch to the EU system could detract further from carbon trading as a global policy. The trading scheme limits the carbon emissions of all big EU factories and power plants by issuing permits for each tonne of carbon emitted, which companies can then trade among themselves. The European Commission suspended much of its Emissions Trading Scheme, the hub of a 92-billion-euro ($124 billion) global market, following the suspected theft of about 7 million euros of emissions permits from the Czech Republic's carbon registry. This theft and a hacking attack on the Austrian registry on January 10 follows a raft of scandals to hit the market in the past two years, including VAT fraud, a phishing scam, and the resale of used carbon credits."All traders have left the market--this is serious," said one emissions trader.Europe's top climate official, Jos Delbeke, told Reuters that the market's integrity was not at risk, but European governments had failed in their duties."I am a bit speechless about the negligence some member states have been showing," he said."We have been hammering on the door of a number of member states alerting them to this issue," he added. "Seemingly half of the member states have not taken our message seriously."SuspensionThe European Commission's suspension of spot trades until January 26 allowed trade in futures and other derivatives to continue. This accounts for about 75 percent of the market, traders said. The Czech Republic, Greece, Estonia, and Poland closed their carbon-trading registries earlier today, joining Austria, which shut on Tuesday until further notice.France's BlueNext spot emissions exchange halted trade, citing problems with filtering out the stolen permits in circulation."There could be a psychological effect on prices but I do not see the market melting down in terms of prices unless everyone liquidates their positions through panic," said Emmanuel Fages at Societe Generale/Orbeo.Delbeke said his team would be busy in the week ahead repairing the system, and from 2013 the EU would move to a safer centralized registry that he hoped would benefit from tough market oversight."In the week that we are shutting down the market, we are asking member state by member state what they have done to protect themselves against the attacks and the thefts," he said. "We have to repair the system."The EU plans a major overhaul of the carbon market in 2013 including scrapping some disputed offsets.Missing permits Today a market participant, Blackstone Global Ventures, told Reuters 475,000 carbon permits had vanished from its account in the Czech Republic."We are treating them as stolen," Daniel Butler, the firm's broker, told Reuters. "We do know that the first delivery point for the EUAs (permits) was Estonia. After that we have no other information."The European Commission confirmed that Greece had closed its national registry, while the Poland and Estonia registries said theirs were also shut."It is too early to pin me down on any figure," said Delbeke, when asked the value of missing permits. "We are still in full investigation. We have not yet a coherent idea."Registries have been on alert since 1.6 million carbon permits went missing from the Romanian registry account of cement-maker Holcim in November."Suspending the Emissions Trading Scheme is the right thing to do, but it should only be the start," said Sanjeev Kumar of environment consultancy E3G. "They need to come down on this like a ton of bricks and that will help restore confidence." Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited.
While its official world debut isna4a4t pegged until the 2011 in just a few weeks, the ESFLOW electric sportscar concept has been revealed in the flesh&8211'or should we say aluminum and carbon fiber&8211'at a special media event in Frankfurt, Germany this week. The High Gear Media team was on hand to bring you these live shots of the striking concept, revealing it in the utmost detail and giving us a look at its futuristic interior for the first time. The Esflow is Nissana4a4s vision of what a zero-emission electric sports car could look like, and based on what wea4a4ve seen, we have to admit wea4a4re like it. Using technology pioneered in the Leaf, the new concept shows that driving can still be as much fun tomorrow as it is today. Most of itsspecs are already known' with a lightweight aluminum chassis, composite body and the same lithium-ion battery pack found in the Leaf, the Esflow promises a range of at least 150 miles per charge and exhilarating performance.Speaking of the battery pack, it&'s mounted low and with a mind for weight distribution, the better to preserve handling balance. Nissan says the rear-wheel drive Esflow will also do 0-62 mph in less than 5.0 seconds, which puts in on par with most of the topsportscars on the market today. So how close is the Esflow to a production reality Surprisingly close despite the funky look. Nissan says the concept is based on existing technology, but &''implemented in innovative ways.&'' Those wild curves, for instance, aren&'t steel, but composite, and they&'re wrapped over an aluminum chassis. And the powertrain, as mentioned, is a beefed up version of the setup found in the Leaf. The 2011 Geneva Motor Show kicks off on March 1.
