It seems only last week that a teacher of young minds was threatened with legal action for mocking one of her class on Facebook.Because it was only last week. Yes, this Chicago elementary school educator was upbraided for allegedly laughing at a little girl's Jolly Rancher hair. But now there is news that another teacher--this time in Paterson, N.J.-- has been suspended for allegedly calling her first-grade class "future criminals" on Facebook. Some might think this less of an insult than, for example, calling them "future cast members of Jersey Shore."However, in a story by the Record of New Jersey, we learn that a "significant number" of parents read her Facebook musings Wednesday and were not amused.(Credit:Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)School Board President Theodore Best told the Record: "The reason why she was suspended was because the incident created serious problems at the school that impeded the functioning of the building."Who can argue against the functioning of buildings But you might still be wondering what else this teacher is alleged to have written. Well, all she is said to have declared is that she was tired of being a "warden" to these "future criminals." I know that there will be many who will weigh in with a theory about whether you can spot a future arsonist or larcenist at age 6. But the teacher's lawyer, Nancy Oxfeld, told The New York Times that this suspension smacked of overly extended noses: "My feeling is that if you're concerned about children, you're concerned about what goes on in the classroom, not about policing your employee's private comments to others."This would have been so clear and simple in the days before the web of Facebook. It seems, though, that this teacher was one of the very many who aren't entirely au fait with their privacy settings. However, perhaps postings such as these are slightly indicative of a desperate education system that is cracking like a Southwest Airlines 737.In February, for example, a Pennsylvania teacher was suspended after blogging that her students were "whiny, simpering grade-grubber with an unrealistically high perception of own ability level."Are these indiscreet teachers among the less able in their profession Or might they be those whose frustration boils to such a temperature that they choose a modern--if injudicious--medium in which to express themselves

0 Vote(s)

Certification testing of Honeywell Phase 3 Display Units on Boeing 737NG aircraft revealed the potential for interference from Wi-Fi for those specific displays. Honeywell emphasizes that there have been &34'no blanking incidents of in-service aircraft with the Wi-Fi system installed,&34' according to the publication Flight Global.(Credit:Boeing) There's nothing the world likes more than a good radiation scare. Mobile phone health panics are quiet at the moment--which could be permanent, like the microwave oven cancer flap that went into spontaneous remission and stayed there. Instead, the burgeoning world of in-flight entertainment beckons as the next fear factory.Take this story from the generally sensible Flight Global publication: "Wi-Fi interference with Honeywell avionics prompts Boeing action." Sounds quite scary, especially since it's a report on a problem uncovered during certification for Aircell's Gogo, an in-flight passenger Internet system. In-flight Internet is the next big thing: will it lead to fiery deathNo--well, not unless you're playing some online shoot-em-up. The report gives the lie to the headline: the problem was found during testing at "elevated power levels" and results in one particular variant of a cockpit display panel temporarily blanking out. It came back within an acceptable time period.Which is how and why you do these tests. Like airframe and engine testing, you push parameters to well beyond operating limits to see if anything goes pop. What the tests have not shown is that there's any real-life problem. At normal power levels, there's no problem. Using any other variant of the display panel: no problem. The actual Wi-Fi system itself: no problem. Honeywell, which makes the over-sensitive display panel, is working on a fix (slap a cap on it, chaps) and meanwhile, Boeing has put the certification process on hold until everything's OK.And the article is clear on this. It's just that the headline writers couldn't resist a bit of hyperbole. There are plenty of chances for stories about avionics being too sensitive to the aircraft's own two-way radios, or ground radar signals, or whatever. But nobody would write them, because outside the specialist engineering press they're not really stories at all.Even within the RF design community, they only have currency as war stories--how we used an unusually well-trained sniffer herring to track that 2.5GHz spur down to an out-of-spec resistor. That sort of thing. So, don't panic. Read the story, not just the headline. The worst that'll happen is you'll have to wait a little longer before you get to read your spam at 35,000 feet.
Developers looking to create apps for the newest Honeycomb version of Android can now grab the final SDK from Google.Honeycomb&39's logo(Credit:Google)The search giant released the software development kit for Android 3.0 yesterday, offering several new features that developers can incorporate into their mobile apps with the goal of publishing them directly to Google's Android Market. This final version follows the interim one that Google rolled out last month.Honeycomb is the first Android OS designed specifically to take advantage oftablets and their larger-than-smartphone displays. As such, much of the functionality offered in the SDK can help developers tap into the new user interface.Using the SDK, developers can create widgets that appear on the home screen and take advantage of Honeycomb's holographic look. The SDK offers several types of widgets, including search boxes, a calendar, a pop-up menu, a date/time picker, and even a 3D stack which people can flip through for different content.Developers can also now create "richer" types of notifications that include a title, large and small icons, and other properties to send updates to users, Google said. They can also tap into a new systemwide clipboard that will let people copy and paste content from one app to another. Another feature allows developers to add drag-and-drop functionality to help people better manage their files. And with Google eyeing the enterprise market, the final SDK can help those who develop device administrator apps incorporate stronger policies for data encryption and passwords.Beyond the core SDK, Google has enhanced its SDK Tools and ADT Plugin for Eclipse, which developers can also use to create apps.Designed to work with the SDK, the SDK Tools help developers build and debug their apps. Updates to the latest ADT Plugin include a new palette with access to different categories, better ways to zoom in and out of the screen, and more accurate rendering so developers can more easily see how their apps will look and fit on the screen space available. As the first tablet sporting the new Honeycomb OS, the Motorola Xoom is set to reach consumers tomorrow, starting at $600 with a two-contract at Verizon. Samsung is also readying a Honeycomb-driven 10.1-inch version of its Galaxy Tab tablet due to reach Europe and Asia this spring.

0 Vote(s)

Private company research firm CB Insights today released a report that shows venture investment remains strong with $6.5 billion in funding taking place in the fourth quarter of 2010, a gain of roughly 12 percent over the third quarter of 2010.Overall, 2010 saw $23.7 billion of funding into 2,792 deals representing 14 percent growth in funding and 13 percent growth in deals over 2009. Fourth quarter 2010 venture financing(Credit:CB Insights)The report noted a few highlights:New York outpaced Massachusetts for total number of deals in 2010 and is on a distinctly upward trend for the second half of the year while Massachusetts slowed down.11 percent of deals were seed-stage investments (typically less than $1 million), consistent with the third quarter of 2010The Internet sector accounted for 37 percent of the total deals for the quarterCalifornia remained uncontested venture capital champion. The state saw 14 percent growth in deals on a sequential basis over third quarter 2010. Sixty percent of the state's funding went to Internet and health care companies. Over the last few weeks, I've spent a lot of time meeting with venture capitalists and newly funded companies. Initially, it felt as if there was a bit of a bubble around financing new Internet companies, and while there are certainly have been some outrageous amounts raised (ahem, Groupon), the general premise is that the Internet has enabled so many new ideas and business models most investors are looking to put a stake in the ground in every category. And, unlike the last funding bubble, a lot more companies have revenue on which to base their valuations as well as more predictable revenue streams. There are also less "me-too" companies which tend to pop-up when a category gets hot such as invitation sale sites and group coupons. There are always copycats, but those with even a bit of differentiation have more viable business models than those are simply clones e.g. Pets.com and Petstore.com of questionable business ideas in the first place. The real question in many of these Internet companies is how much they are innovating in terms of technology versus just evolving a business model to the Internet age. And, to the extent that the business model is changing, how defensible of a position is it when you are just making a process better, rather than creating true intellectual property.

0 Vote(s)

To that end, this isn't a bad phone for making calls. However, its feature set tends toward the anorexic. Mobile e-mail and IM are surprise options, but ZTE has overlooked basics like Bluetooth and a volume rocker, two important fundamentals for a phone best-suited for callers. Still, it's a good buy for some people.Read more, listen to call quality, and see photos of the phone's very nice design in our hands-on review.

0 Vote(s)

The iPad is the most desired piece of tech among 6- to 12-year-olds.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)If your kids are begging for tech, the iPad might just top their holiday wish-list.According to Nielsen, which conducted a survey in October to see which tech products American kids want through the beginning of next year, Apple's tablet sat at the top of a 17-item list, with 31 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 12 saying they want to get their hands on the device.A computer andApple's iPod Touch tied for second, with 29 percent of children saying they wanted those products. Nintendo's DS took the fourth spot with 25 percent of kids eyeing the portable gaming device.Sony'sPlayStation 3, any (non-iPhone) smartphone, and a mobile phone all tied for fifth place with 21 percent of kids having interest in those products this year. TheApple iPhone, a television, and the as-yet released Nintendo 3DS rounded out the top 10, each with 20 percent of children's interest. An e-reader was the least popular gift this year, ranking 17th, with just 11 percent of kids saying they wanted one. Nielsen also found out what youths 13 and up are coveting. Among that group, a computer led the way with 20 percent desiring a PC or Mac. A television and a (non-iPhone) smartphone tied for the second spot with 19 percent. Apple's iPad, a Blu-ray player, and an e-reader took the next three spots with 18 percent, 17 percent, and 15 percent of teens showing interest, respectively. The Nintendo Wii ranked seventh among teens with 15 percent saying they wanted one. It was followed by the iPhone and PlayStation 3, each with votes from 13 percent of teens. Sony's PlayStation Portable was the least-desired tech product among teenagers, ranking 17th, with just 5 percent of showing interest in it. Nielsen's study follows a similar survey released last month by the Duracell Toy Report. According to that survey, nearly 40 percent of kids between the ages of 5 and 16 want an iPhone 4, iPod Touch, or iPad this holiday season.

0 Vote(s)

Update: Well it turns out the Nokia &''Plan B&'' investors were a hoax all along by one very bored engineer &''who really likes his iPhone.&'' Our hearts go out to all the Nokia fanatics who thought they had investor support.&8211'Nokiaa4a4s new partnership with Microsoft is an exciting, but risky, attempt to rejuvenate an ailing company. So of course, stubborn young Nokia stockholders &8212' who for some reason didna4a4t see any reason to complain as the company failed time and again to innovate over the last few years &8212' announced yesterday that they were protesting the move and called for the removal of Stephen Elop as CEO.Now, just a day after announcing their a4APlan Ba4 for Nokia, the shareholders are backing down from their revolutionary stance. The group said they were contacted by hundreds of individual Nokia shareholders (who owned anywhere from 10 to 400,000 Nokia shares) who were in support of their plan, but responses from institutional investors a4Awere not encouraging.a4In a blog post, the shareholders wrote: a4AThese institutions have a fiduciary responsibility to their customers and are legally bared from supporting radical initiatives like seating a bunch of kids on the board of directors. If they do not agree with Nokiaa4a4s plans, they are better off simply divesting and putting their money in other companies that better fit their investing strategy (which is exactly what they have been doing).a4They also noted that their Plan B scenario would take a long time to take effect, at which point Nokiaa4a4s remaining software talent will most likely be gone. The Plan B shareholders wanted Nokia to return to its homegrown software initiatives, which included focusing on MeeGo as its next-generation OS, and increasing the length of Symbiana4a4s life span. Herea4a4s the problem with that plan: Ita4a4s exactly what Nokia has been doing for the past few years &8212' and it hasna4a4t worked out well. The company has proven that it simply cana4a4t deliver innovative phones fast enough to compete with the likes of the iPhone or Android.Right now Nokia is a stumbling giant, and it needs the partnership with Microsoft to regain balance. Therea4a4s no reason Nokia wouldna4a4t be able to pursue its own software initiatives after a few years delivering Windows Phone 7 devices &8212' in fact, thata4a4s exactly what Elop has been hinting at. With MeeGo less of a focus, Nokia will be free to look at the next generation of mobile operating systems, instead of just trying to catch up to competitors.Next Story: Yes, there will be Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7 Previous Story: Video games aren&'t a waste of time!PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: meego, smartphones, Symbian, Windows Phone 7Companies: Microsoft, nokiaPeople: Stephen Elop Tags: meego, smartphones, Symbian, Windows Phone 7Companies: Microsoft, nokiaPeople: Stephen ElopDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
World of Warcraft Cataclysm broke all PC game records, selling more than 3.3 million copies on its first day of sales on Dec. 7.Blizzard Entertainment, a division of Activision Blizzard, said this expansion for its World of Warcraft online virtual world has proven to be the most successful of the three major expansions in terms of fastest sales out of the gate. In November, 2008, the second expansion, World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King, sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours. World of Warcraft has more than 12 million paying subscribers, making it the only game that can get such huge audience numbers despite charging a subscription fee. The first-day sales show that Blizzard&'s grip on hardcore online role-playing fans is getting tighter and tighter, resulting in guaranteed revenues of more than $1 billion from this one game alone. The first-day sales were bigger than the July launch of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, which sold 1.5 million copies in two days. Blizzard managed to beat its own record by launching simultaneously in more territories. On the first day, it released the game in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. It then released the game in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on Dec. 9.More than 10,000 stores throughout the world opened their doors at midnight for the launch. Some 15,000 fans attended official launch events staged by Blizzard. In the expansion, vast swaths of the realm of Azeroth have been destroyed by the return of a dragon god, Deathwing. Mike Morhaime, chief executive and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, said the company had to bring Azeroth to near destruction in this expansion, but it was worth it.What will the next Blizzard expansion be It&'s hard to come up with an encore for nearly destroying the virtual world. But if a recent document leak is to be believed, Blizzard plans to launch World of Warcraft in Brazil in the fourth quarter of 2011, plans to launch its fourth expansion in the second quarter of 2012, plans to launch the World of Warcraft trading card game in the third quarter of 2012, and will debut the World of Warcraft movie the fourth quarter of 2012. The fifth World of Warcraft expansion is due to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2013.There isn&'t much competition for World of Warcraft right now, but Trion Worlds will take it on in 2011 with its upcoming Rift: Planes of Telara.Previous Story: Google Latitude iPhone app lands to better stalk your friendsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: World of Warcraft: CataclysmCompanies: Activision Blizzard, Blizzard EntertainmentPeople: Mike Morhaime Tags: World of Warcraft: CataclysmCompanies: Activision Blizzard, Blizzard EntertainmentPeople: Mike MorhaimeDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Last spring, we did a preview post on Offermatic, a new deals site that we described as the &''freak love child Of Mint, Groupon and Blippy&''. Seven months later, that&'s still pretty accurate. And now you&'ve got a chance to try it out for yourself: Offermatic has launched to the public. The company is also announcing that it&'s closed aa4s$750,000 seed rounda4swith participation from Kleiner Perkins, Bessemer, and angel investors.Offermatic revolves around getting good deals at local merchants and from national chains, but it isn&'t just another deals site a4"a4sthere aren&'t any printed vouchers, and you never have to show a cashier a coupon. Instead, you link up your credit or debit card to the service, which then automatically analyzes your purchases and offers you deals based on your shopping history. It&'s a very interesting model, because it means that Offermatic can offer highly targeted deals based on the sort of things you are actually buying. Seeing a lot of movies lately Offermatic might send you 50% off on tickets from Fandango. Just did some shopping at the Home Depot They might send you a discounta4"a4sor a competitor like Lowes can pay to send you an offer and try to nab a customer from a rival. To help mitigate the creepiness factor associated with analyzing your credit card information, Offermatic has turned to Yodlee, the same financial service backend that powers Mint. The site says that it keeps all of your data synonymized, so while it does know your shopping history, it doesn&'t (in theory) know who you are. And none of your shopping history is ever shared a4" this isn&'t a social site.Once you&'ve signed up for the service, using it is pretty simple. Offermatic will periodically email you offers based on your recent transactions. If you spot one you like, you click a link, and your credit card will then have that offer automatically &8216'loaded&' on top of it. Then, when you make a purchase at whatever merchant or brand made the offer, your discount will automatically be applied to the transaction. There&'s still a very small amount of user effort involved (you have to click on the emails for the offers you&'re interested in), but it&'s pretty low friction. So far, the system has been working. Offermatic says that its tests show that top retailers are yielding a 14.5% conversion rate, which is far higher than usual.Offermatic is pretty unique at this point, but it&'s going to see increasing competition as other deal providers link transaction history and loyalty cards with special deals. For example, Foursquare recently did a deal with Vons that revolves around the Vons loyalty card' expect similar deals to come from Foursquare and other services in the future.
Apple&'s new tablet &8212' iPad 2 &8212' will ship by the end of February and be available for sale in April, according to DigiTimes&' sources from Foxconn Electronics in Shenzhen, China, which manufactures most of Apple&'s products.Sources who spoke to DigiTimes claimed that Apple has notified the factory plant to make initial shipments of 400,000 to 600,000 units within the next 100 days, pointing out that a postponement due to the device&'s firmware delayed production by a month. Additionally, they added that the company is likely to launch the device in April. The iPad&'s first iteration, which launched in April this year, has defined the tablet market and caused a wave of manufacturers such as LG and Samsung to follow up with similar touch-screen devices. Fans and on-lookers have been curious to see what could be in store for the second iteration of the device, which TechCrunch reports is likely to have a front-facing camera and aniPhone 4-like design.Providing shipment data on the original iPad, the sources told DigiTimes that Foxconn had shipped 6 million units of the iPad to the company in the third quarter of the year, bringing the total number of devices shipped in 2010 to around 16 million.Next Story: As Blizzard kicks off World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, it suffers a disastrous data leak Previous Story: Salesforce launching Chatter.com, an enterprise-style Facebook, early next yearPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPad, iPad 2, tablet, touch-screen tabletCompanies: Apple, Foxconn Tags: iPad, iPad 2, tablet, touch-screen tabletCompanies: Apple, FoxconnSid Yadav is a contributor to VentureBeat.
The latest WikiLeaks documents unveiled by the New York Times show a vast attempt to hack sites such as Google, driven by the Chinese leadership. The tale begins with a secret State Department cable, obtained and leaked by WikiLeaks, that shows Li Changchun, a member of China&'s top ruling body, the Politburo Standing Committee, becoming obsessed with Google&'s search engine and its ability to get around China&'s censorship. Li was shocked to discover that, when he Googled himself, he found results that criticized him. The cable, dated May 18, 2009, was one of many that showed how China&'s leaders were afraid of the threat posed by the internet to their control of China. The Chinese leaders also saw how they could hack into computers in the U.S. to obtain secrets. The cables say that the Chinese used cyber hacking to obtain a wide array of American government and military data. They hacked, for instance, the computers of diplomats involved in climate change talks with China. The Secretary of State office had to send a warning not to respond to &''spear phishing&'' attacks aimed at agency officials during June, 2009.One cable alleged that Li himself directed an attack &8212' or personally oversaw the campaign of attack &8212' on Google&'s servers. The cables also say that China&'s coercion of Google to comply with censorship laws occurred over years before Google finally decided to pull out of China last spring. During the attacks, hackers obtained the email accounts of Chinese dissidents and got access to Google&'s proprietary software code. The Chinese wanted to delete material not only on the Dalai Lama or the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. It also wanted Google to censor Google Earth satellite images that showed Chinese government facilities, out of fear terrorists could use them to plan attacks. One cable said that Liu Jieyi, an assistant minister of foreign affairs, warned the U.S. Embassy in Beijing that there would be a4Agrave consequencesa4 if terrorists exploited the imagery. The report also says that China&'s State Council Information Office concluded in a report last spring that, thanks to the pressure on Google and other surveillance, &''the web is fundamentally controllable.&'' One previously unknown attack in 2008, code-named Byzantine Candor, yielded more than 50 megabytes of emails and a complete list of user names and passwords from an American government agency. Chinese hackers in Shanghai &8212' linked to the People&'s Liberation Army &8212' used a document labeled &''salary increase &8212' survey and forecast&'' to lure unsuspecting targets into clicking on some kind of malware. The New York Times said it was not clear how the attacks were coordinated, as many appeared to rely on &''Chinese freelancers&'' and &''patriotic hackers&'' with the support of civilian or military authorities. The attacks on Google evidently involved multiple government leaders, the cables said. Google tried to negotiate with China and get the U.S. government to intercede on its behalf. Google ultimately stopped complying with censorship requests and stopped offering a censored version of its search engine in China earlier this year. It finally struck a deal with the Chinese by offering an intermediate landing page that mollified the Chinese government. Those are some of the highlights of the story, which is quite chilling for entrepreneurs wanting to do any kind of technology business with China.
For reasons inexplicable, a &''Today I Learned&'' thread on Reddit has turned into a treatise on how to make Google Translate beatbox for you, among other things. It must have taken some intense experimentation for Redditor Harrichr to get here but he somehow stumbled upon the following combination of steps.1) Go to Google Translate2) Set the translator to translate German to German3) Copy + paste the following into the translate box: pv zk pv pv zk pv zk kz zk pv pv pv zk pv zk zk pzk pzk pvzkpkzvpvzk kkkkkk bsch4) Click &''listen&''5) Be amazed :)Since the original post both the thread and meme have expanded into slight tweaks and variations, including Technocopter, Helicopter and Dubstep.a4sYCombinator user iamdave actually posted a guide to making your own beats:zk = suspended cymbalbschk = snarepv = brushbk = basstk = flam1vk = roll tapkt = flam2kttp = flam tapkrp = hi hat tappv = short rollth = better hi hatthp, ds = instant rimshot. While I&'m not 100% sure how exactly this is working, it seems like a peculiarity of the German translation setup in Google Translate is allowing for playing consonants in a way that sounds like drums. Or, more specifically, a delightful way that sounds like drums.Image: Datz.roCrunchBase InformationGoogleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

It&'s a very old trick, and arguably a mighty effective one. Ask people to set your website as their homepage, and it will become their entry point to the Web, the very first thing they&'ll see when they open their browser. Venturebeat noticed that Facebook started prompting visitors to set the site as their homepage before the weekend, by means of a bar at the top that actually shows some pictures and names of your Facebook friends.Others have reported to see the bar popping up as well, and reader Ryan Merket from Appbistro just checked in to tell us that he&'s seen it as well. You can see two other pop-up messages below, and you&'ll notice that they differ from the one embedded above. From the looks of it, Facebook is A/B testing this with a small subset of users, and trying out a variety of messages and pop-up layouts to figure out which one yields the best results. This is undeniably a significant move, particularly when it will roll out to the site&'s roughly 500 million active users in full. Keep in mind that Google and other search engines benefit greatly from being a genuine starting point to the rest of the Web, which is why so many people select such services to come up as soon as they open their Web browser.Being people&'s homepage is good for branding, great for &8216'stickiness&' and phenomenal for traffic. But for many people, social networking sites are slowly taking over at least part of the role of search engines, which is mainly to retrieve information. When you can tap your entire social graph for answers to your queries, sites like Facebook have the ability to push aside search engines like Google as the first site that springs to mind when people think about surfing the WWW to find information, connect to other people, communicate with friends, and so on.I can easily see why more and more people would eventually switch to Facebook as their homepage of choice, and actively prompting them to do so might be just what some Facebook users need to actually configure their browsers to do just that.Come to think of it, I&'m wondering why Facebook hasn&'t been doing this forever.Facebook&'s traffic is still very much not going anywhere but up, but the social network could still see a massive bump in total pageviews and time spent on the site if they can convince even just a tiny percentage of their total user base to set Facebook.com as their homepage. That said, you&'ve set TechCrunch as your homepage, rightCrunchBase InformationFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
