Nintendo&39's DS is losing market share to iOS and Android.(Credit:Flurry Analytics)Nintendo is facing increased pressure from smartphones andtablets in the gaming arena.According to a new report from research firm Flurry Analytics, Nintendo's share of the portable gaming market in the U.S. slipped from 70 percent in 2009 to 57 percent in 2010. Sony'sPlayStation Portable, meanwhile, saw its market share figures drop from 11 percent to 9 percent year over year. The big winners in 2010, according to Flurry, were iOS- and Android-based devices, which nabbed 34 percent of the portable gaming market. In 2009, Apple's iOS had just 19 percent market share.Flurry's findings further cement the reality of Nintendo's somewhat tenuous position in portable gaming. Although its DS was still wildly popular last year and its brand-new 3DS has seen strong initial sales, gamers are increasingly turning to their smartphones to play casual titles like Angry Birds. Moreover, with $39.99 3DS games on store shelves, some folks are finding it difficult to choose those titles over the free or sometimes $1 or $2 games available in Apple's App Store and the Android Market. Those worrisome market factors have already caught the attention of Nintendo. In October, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that he believes Apple and its App Store are a bigger threat to Nintendo's business right now than Microsoft's Xbox 360, which has been slowly gaining on Nintendo'sWii. "Do I think that in the near term [Apple] can hurt us more than Microsoft" Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said to Forbes in an interview last year. "Absolutely." Though iOS and Android devices are taking a bite out of the portable gaming market, they have a long way to go to catch up to consoles, Flurry found. The company said that console games made up 76 percent of all gaming software revenue in the U.S. last year, up from the 71 percent market share they nabbed in 2009. Portable gaming devices, like the DS and PSP captured 16 percent market share, while iOS and Android were only able to muster 8 percent market share. All told, consumers in the U.S. spent $10.7 billion on games last year. iOS and Android game revenue was $800 million.

0 Vote(s)

President Barack Obama set an ambitious goal today to cut U.S. oil imports by a third over 10 years, focusing on a source of anxiety for Americans as high gasoline prices threaten economic recovery. Obama outlined his strategy in a speech after spending days explaining U.S.-led military action in Libya, where fighting, accompanied by unrest elsewhere in the Arab world, has helped push U.S. gasoline prices toward $4 a gallon.President Obama outlines his plans to cut oil imports.(Credit:CBSNews.com/Screenshot by CNET) "There are no quick fixes. And we will keep on being a victim to shifts in the oil market until we get serious about a long-term policy for secure, affordable energy," Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery. The president says the country, which relies on imported oil for roughly half of its daily needs, must increase its energy independence to improve national security. But previous presidents have made similar promises on energy security and failed. And any new policy initiatives can expect tough opposition from Republicans who control the House of Representatives and see high energy prices as a vote-winner in the 2012 presidential and congressional elections. "Today, I'm setting a new goal: one that is reasonable, achievable, and necessary," Obama said. "When I was elected to this office, America imported 11 million barrels of oil a day. By a little more than a decade from now, we will have cut that by one third."Related links &149' Missing in green tech: Long attention span &149' Wind, solar, biofuels to double by 2020, report says &149' Republican wins to hurt Obama's clean-energy plans Republicans have mocked the idea of Obama curbing oil imports a week after visiting Brazil, where he said the United States wanted to be a good customer for its oil exports. Obama laid out four areas to help reach his target of curbing U.S. dependence on foreign oil: lifting domestic energy production, encouraging the use of more natural gas in vehicles like city buses, making cars and trucks more efficient, and encouraging biofuels. "We cannot keep going from shock to trance on the issue of energy security, rushing to propose action when gas prices rise, then hitting the snooze button when they fall again," he said. Analysts and experts said Obama's goal is ambitious. "All U.S. presidents since the early 1970s have outlined ambitious plans to reduce their reliance on imported oil," said John Sfakianakis, chief economist at the Banque Saudi Fransi. Truly reforming U.S. energy use would involve sweeping changes, including possible fuel taxes to encourage Americans to change their habits, analysts said. While polls show Americans have mixed feelings about getting entangled in a third Muslim country, with the United States still engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are clearly worried by high gas prices before the summer driving season.
Intel on Thursday plans to roll out Light Peak, a high-speed connection technology that Apple is also likely to adopt, according to an industry source familiar with the details of the event.Intel released a statement to the media today saying that on Thursday in San Francisco it will "host a...press briefing to discuss a new technology that is about to appear on the market." There will also be a media event held the same day at the Intel campus in Santa Clara, Calif., where the chipmaker will conduct technology and product demonstrations. Maybe not coincidentally, Apple is expected to roll out new MacBook Pros--and possibly other products--on Thursday. Intel has been working on Light Peak for years and recently said the initial version would be based on copper, as time-to-market realities necessitate more conventional technology. Light Peak is significantly faster than even USB 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously. Connection speeds will not be affected by the transition to copper, according to Intel. In the future, Light Peak may scale to 100 gigabits per second, according to Intel. As CNET reported earlier, the technology is expected to find its way into Apple products. When Intel initially demonstrated Light Peak at its developer conference in 2009 it used a machine running Apple'sMac OS X. "Light Peak also has the ability to run multiple protocols simultaneously over a single cable, enabling the technology to connect devices such as peripherals, displays, disk drives, docking stations, and more," according to a statement on Intel's Light Peak Web page. "The multi-protocol capability...will enable new usage models like flexible system designs and thinner form factors, media creation and connectivity, faster media transfer and cable simplification." For more details on Light Peak, see CNET interview with Jason Ziller, an Intel manager heading up Light Peak work at the chipmaker and Intel's overview of the technology.

0 Vote(s)

Although Rinspeed highlights bamboo in the car's name, only interior components are made from bamboo fibers, with a more conventional metal shell for the body. The BamBoo comes with a foldable two-wheel electric bike.(Credit:Rinspeed)In the past, Rinspeed has given us such wild concepts as the submersible sQuba and the iChange. In comparison, the BamBoo seems less ambitious, and even Rinspeed describes it as a "grown-up golf cart." Bamboo has become a favorite material for green construction because it replenishes itself quickly. An electric powertrain propels thecar, although Rinspeed offers no specifications for it. The press release also mentions an included two-wheel electric vehicle for that last mile. Think parking the BamBoo, then scooting around the narrow streets of a European town. The 2011 Geneva auto show takes place from March 3 through March 13.

0 Vote(s)

Security software manufacturer BitDefender today released some statistics gleaned from Safego, a Facebook application that it offers to users of the social-network to keep an eye on their vulnerability to malware. The big finding: 20 percent of Facebook users are exposed to malicious posts in their "news feeds" of friends' activity, generally defined as posts that, when clicked on, result in "the user's account being hijacked and in malware being automatically posted on the walls of the respective user's friends."The numbers were derived from Safego's analysis of news feed items viewed by the 14,000 Facebook users who have installed the app. Considering Facebook has 500 million users around the world, that's a small sample, but it's also a sample of users who, by virtue of installing the app in the first place, indicate that they're relatively security-minded. The "average" Facebook user may well be even more likely to see malicious posts, in theory.Over 60 percent of attacks come from notifications from malicious third-party applications on Facebook's developer platform, the study found. Within that, the most popular subset of "attack apps" (21.5 percent of total kinds of malware) were those that claim to perform a function that Facebook normally prohibits, like seeing who has viewed your profile and who has "unfriended" you. 15.4 percent lure in users with bonus items for Facebook games like free items in FarmVille' 11.2 percent offer bonus (yet bogus) Facebook features like free backgrounds and "dislike buttons," 7.1 percent promise new versions of well-known gaming titles like World of Warcraft' 5.4 percent claim to give away free cell phones' and 1.3 percent claim to offer a way to watch movies for free online.Beyond "app attacks," BitDefender found that an additional 16 percent of malware viewed on Facebook entices users to watch some kind of shocking video, like this one that claims to depict an anaconda coughing up a hippo, and that an additional 5 percent of attacks can be connected to viruses like Koobface. And this isn't all the malware that gets flung across the social network: The BitDefender app only analyzed what's visible in users' news feeds. Private Facebook messages, which were just upgraded and expanded to include many different points of entry last week, are also vulnerable to attack.Facebook says that it monitors activity routinely and keeps abreast of security concerns as quickly and expediently as possible, but as with anything else on the Web, dealing with malware is always a game of defense.

0 Vote(s)

A new federal investigation is focusing on the legality of supply line leaks and their consequences on Wall Street. The poster boy for this would have to be Apple, around which an entire manufacturing and distribution channels has grown, and which is now too big to plug every leak &mdash' especially now that memetically propagating news magnifies every murmur into a clamor, for better or for worse. The subjects of the probe are some research firms that make it their business to know what&'s going on in, say, Shenzhen or Taiwan, where friends and industry experts dispense information that may or may not be confidential about such things as big new orders, equipment changes, and meetings with other companies. The feds say that at some point, these things must constitute insider trading. I say good luck drawing that particular line. It&'s funny watching various sectors react as their perimeters begin to come in conflict with the internet. Not only because that initial reaction usually simultaneously overreaches and underestimates, but because I relish that moment when an industry or person realizes exactly what a den of vipers they&'ve stepped into. I wish I could actually be in the room when they first understand the situation. The financial industry and its regulators demonstrate a strange mix of progressive and antiquated thinking. Not to get into political or big money issues here, but even the limited democratization of information currently underway could have serious implications, though there are channels of information deep enough and obscure enough that even 4chan might not be able to uncover them for quite some time.In the meantime, more public forms of &''inside&'' information are becoming public knowledge, and I think the feds are going to have a hell of a time laying down the law on what is confidential, what is privileged, what is within the bounds of journalistic anonymity, and so on. They&'re getting hit with the industrial equivalent of privacy concerns. For example, what role do confidentiality agreements signed in China by factory workers have in our laws What about temporary agreements when they do contract work for an American company Is a factory floor employee allowed to connect the dots by himself, with knowledge only of, say, what size the current iPad is and what size the unbranded display he&'s assembling is Is it the corporation&'s responsibility to compartmentalize and enforce secrecy, or is it each individual company&'s Whose is the liability when a truck delivers an iPad 2 to the wrong address, and some Hong Kong blogger picks up on itThe SEC and whoever else is involved here will have to make a huge number of judgment calls, and a large portion of them will be wrong. Not that I blame them, or that I could do much better myself. But I will say this: any government effort to make illegal the free passage of publicly available information will meet with failure. How can you forbid a research company from making use of anonymous information provided to an industry outlet like Digitimes They publish &''insider&'' information every day, and I check it every day, because that is valuable information for what I do. Is similar information made confidential simply by the fact that it hasn&'t been reported yetThere is a chance that citing such information in decisions to sell, buy, and so on will become illegal. Think about how stupid that is. Yet the regulators are caught between a rock and a hard place, and either the law must change or they must disregard the now-outdated law in light of (relatively) recent developments in technology and information markets. At the moment, however, it&'s still appears to be just a preliminary investigation, so there&'s no need to get too worked up about it. Still, be prepared for some strange and labyrinthine regulations concerning what information does and doesn&'t constitute a breach of confidentiality. And then watch every single party affected sidestep those regulations. &''Better luck next time&'' is all we&'ll be able to say.

0 Vote(s)

Nokia today announced that ita4a4s appointing marketing veteran Jerri DeVard as its new chief marketing officer and executive vice president.DeVard has worked in marketing for over 25 years. She served as senior vice president of marketing for Verizon from 2003 to 2007 and then started her own firm in New York, the DeVard Marketing Group, where she served clients like Microsoft. That connection probably made her a desirable choice as CMO with Nokiaa4a4s new CEO Stephen Elop, who previously served as the head of Microsofta4a4s business division. DeVard also served as Chief Marketing Officer for Citigroupa4a4s e-commerce business. Her new role will take effect on January 1, 2011, and she will report to Niklas Savander, EVP and head of Nokiaa4a4s Markets unit. DeVard will spearhead Nokiaa4a4s new Marketing and Communications organization, which will bring together its marketing, brand management and communications efforts.Therea4a4s honestly no mobile company I can think of right now that needs as much help with brand management in the US, so DeVard will certainly have her work cut out for her. While Nokia still sells more devices worldwide than any other company and is still very successful in Europe and emerging markets, its track record in the US has been abysmal for some time.
Samsung said two months ago that it expects to sell 10 million Galaxy S Android phones in 2010, and now it looks like the company is set to reach that goal. The Korean phone manufacturer announced earlier this week that it has sold 9.3 million Galaxy S phones worldwide, and that it will likely hit 10 million by the end of the month.Hitting that key sales number would make the Galaxy S the first Android phone to reach 10 million sales worldwide. Of course, Samsung is cheating a bit &8212' the Galaxy S is actually a family of Android phones built around the same basic specifications. For the most part, there are only minor differences between the Galaxy S family members &8212' although the Epic 4G on Sprint is an exception with its slide-out keyboard and front-facing camera.Samsung also announced that it has sold 2 million Galaxy S phones in Korea since it was released in late June &8212' making it the first smartphone in Korea to reach that benchmark. The Galaxy S even surpassed Apple&'s iPhone, which has sold 1.8 million units since it debuted in Korea in November 2009.Samsung&'s success is to be expected &8212' the Galaxy S phones are among the best Android options right now. They&'re so good that Google ended up using the phones as the basis for the Nexus S, which features the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display and 1-gigahertz Samsung Hummingbird processor.Via Information WeekPrevious Story: Rovi aims for consumer digital video with $720M Sonic Solutions buyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Galaxy S, smartphonesCompanies: Samsung Tags: Android, Galaxy S, smartphonesCompanies: SamsungDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
