This illustration from the GAO report shows the topography of a smart grid.(Credit:GAO)Echoing concerns of security experts, a new report from the Government Accountability Office warns that smart-grid systems are being deployed without built-in security features. Certain smart meters have not been designed with a strong security architecture and lack important security features like event logging and forensics capabilities used to detect and analyze cyberattacks, while smart-grid home area networks that manage electricity usage of appliances also lack adequate built-in security, according to the report (PDF) released last week by the GAO, the auditing and investigative arm of the U.S. Congress. "Without securely designed smart-grid systems, utilities will be at risk of not having the capacity to detect and analyze attacks, which increases the risk that attacks will succeed and utilities will be unable to prevent them from recurring," said the report. The report also took aim at the self-regulatory nature of the industry, saying utilities are focusing on complying with minimum regulatory requirements rather than having adequate security to prevent cyberattacks. The National Institute of Standards and Technology "does not have a definitive plan and schedule, including specific milestones, for updating and maintaining its cybersecurity guidelines to address key missing elements," the report concluded. One of the important elements NIST has failed to address is the risk of attacks that use both cyber and physical means, the report said. "Furthermore, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has not established an approach coordinated with other regulators to monitor the extent to which industry is following the smart-grid standards it adopts," the report said. "The voluntary standards and guidelines developed through the NIST and FERC processes offer promise. However, a voluntary approach poses some risks when applied to smart-grid investments, particularly given the fragmented nature of regulatory authority over the electricity industry." In comments on the report that were included as an appendix, the Department of Commerce--which oversees NIST--says NIST "agrees that the risk of combined cyber-physical attacks on the smart grid is an area that needs to be more fully explored in the future." Meanwhile, FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff said in comments included in an appendix to the report that he will ask his staff to evaluate ways to improve coordination among regulators and assess whether challenges identified in the report should be addressed in FERC's cybersecurity efforts, but will need to work within the commission's statutory authority. The goal of the smart grid is to improve reliability and efficiency by incorporating information technology systems into power lines and customer meters for monitoring power distribution and usage without having to send operators into the field.
(Credit:Air Force Research Laboratory)PlayStations have seen plenty of army action with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops. Now they're doing real-life military duty as part of the Condor Cluster, a U.S. Air Force supercomputer whose off-the-shelf components include more than 1,700Sony PS3 processors. The computer--which will undertake a range of tasks including synthetic aperture radar enhancement, image enhancement, and pattern recognition research--also incorporates 168 separate graphical processing units. It's capable of computing about 500 trillion calculations per second, which makes it some 50,000 times faster than the average laptop. As such, the Condor can read a whopping 20 pages of information per second. Even when 20 percent to 30 percent of the characters on a page are removed, the computer can recover all of the sentences and words with about 99.9 percent accuracy, according to the official Web site of the U.S. Air Force. Affordability was a key motivator in the decision to use PS3 processors. "The total cost of the Condor system was approximately $2 million, which is a cost savings of between 10 and 20 times for the equivalent capability," said Mark Barnell, director of the Air Force Research Laboratory's high-power computing division. He said the Condor isn't made to compete with the world's largest general-purpose supercomputers, but is meant for highly specific military tasks. "The biggest thing for us was [that] the particular applications and the hardware we chose to build this computer with purposely match those applications well," he said.Initial projects scheduled for the Department of Defense mega-machine, housed in Rome, N.Y., will include neuromorphic artificial intelligence research, in which programmers will "teach" the computer to read symbols, letters, words, and sentences so it can fill in human gaps and correct human errors. The military has for several years now turned to video games to recruit and train personnel. The U.S. Army Experience Center in Philadelphia, now shuttered, also incorporated hardware, sporting computers preloaded with military video games, game controllers, and video displays that described military bases and career options. The Condor Cluster, however, marks an unusual twist in the relationship between the Armed Forces and the game industry. The Air Force says it believes the Condor Cluster currently holds the spot as the 35th- or 36th-fastest computer in the world, a standing that could improve even more with pending updates.

0 Vote(s)

Google Voice could be very interesting to current Google Apps users.(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)Google Apps customers are about to get a lot more options as part of their accounts, including one very interesting feature: Google Voice. Google plans to announce today that it's adding several other Google services--more than 60 different Google services in total--to Google Apps accounts maintained by businesses and educational customers, which already include Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Sites. On a sour note, Google doesn't plan on extending its service-level agreements with Google Apps customers to cover the new services, and all customers will have to transfer their accounts to a new system to make way for the new applications. Still, the move will allow Google's business customers to experiment with the new services, and the addition of Google Voice might be the most intriguing to smaller businesses that aren't crazy about paying regular landline fees. Customers will have access to a control panel where they can turn features on and off as needed for their organizations. Google also will announce plans to rebrand the Apps suite of products. Instead of Google Apps Standard and Premium editions, the company will now call its free option Google Apps, and the paid-support option Google Apps for Business. It will still separately offer Google Apps for Government and Google Apps for Education for those particular types of customers.

0 Vote(s)

Craigslist has closed down its adult services ads on a worldwide basis, just four months after shutting down the listings in the U.S. due to prostitution complaints. The classifieds web site, started by entrepreneur Craig Newmark (pictured), came under intense pressure because many of the ads were thinly veiled prostitution solicitations. In September, Craiglist took down the adult services listings in the U.S. In doing so, it replaced the listings with the word, &''censored.&''Opponents of the sexually-charged listings claimed victory. Evidently, it&'s hard for companies that want to be recognized as legitimate to have any kind of association with something unsavory. That&'s why companies such as PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and Amazon have also dropped WikiLeaks, which has come under fire for releasing diplomatic secrets.Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal confirmed that the adult services section is shut everywhere and he said,&nbsp' &''This worldwide shutdown of erotic services sections on Craigslist is a victory in the fight against sexual exploitation of women and children and human trafficking connected to prostitution.&''Blumenthal fought the removal of the adult services from Craigslist after Boston University medical student Philip Markoff was accused of killing Julissa Brisman in April. Police said the killer found the woman through her Craigslist ad. Craigslist has not offered comment yet.Newmark was ambushed in an Aug. 13 interview by CNN reporter Amber Lyon, who asked him what Craigslist was doing to protect young girls who advertised in the adult services section of the site. She told him that a number of child protection advocates have told her that Craigslist is the a4AWal-mart of child sex trafficking.a4 Under further questioning, Newmark stared at her and referred Lyon to the companya4a4s blog.Lyon put Newmark on the spot, saying he was the a4ACraig in Craigslista4 and was responsible. In a subsequent blog post, Newmark said that Jim Buckmaster, chief executive, has been running the site for the last 10 years and that his role is as a customer service rep. Newmark said he should have just referred Lyon to Buckmaster, but, instead, he froze on camera and looked a4Auncaring.a4 CNN aired the piece dozens of times. Buckmaster, meanwhile, lashed out at Lyonand wrote how Craigslist was trying to do the right thing, manually screening ads in its adult services site since May 2009. It has also pointed out how similar ads on eBay go unnoticed.[photo credit: disinfo]Next Story: Facebook&'s Zuckerberg meets with China&'s tech leaders Previous Story: Skype outage affects tens of millionsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Adult ServicesCompanies: craigslistPeople: Craig Newmark, Richard Blumenthal Tags: Adult ServicesCompanies: craigslistPeople: Craig Newmark, Richard BlumenthalDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
This post is sponsored by Dell. As always, VentureBeat is adamant about maintaining editorial objectivity. Dell had no involvement in the content of this or other posts. If you&'re tackling your company&'s computing needs, you&'re going to have to look to the clouds. But which onesYou&'ve likely heard of cloud computing &8211'shared computing resources available over the &''cloud,&'' or the Internet. But it turns out there&'s more than one way to cloud. When most people talk about the cloud, they mean a public cloud &8212' big server farms maintained by companies like Rackspace and Amazon.com available to and shared by a wide range of customers. They typically sell storage, bandwidth, and computing power at rates cheaper than most businesses could obtain on their own by maintaining their own computing infrastructure. There are also cloud applications, like Salesforce.com&'s customer-relationship management service, which provide both the software and the computing power needed to run it as a package deal. These, too, are a specialized form of public cloud. The cost savings are compelling: Why own when you can rent But cloud computing requires a shift in how programmers design and develop applications, however. That&'s a burden for businesses both large and small. Add to that lingering concerns over security and availability, and it&'s easy to understand why not everyone&'s rushing to the public cloud.Security concerns with the public cloud are mostly a myth, said Jason Hoffman, founder and chief technology officer of cloud-computing provider Joyent. But most major companies will probably still always have security standards that will prevent them from moving their business into the public cloud. Many businesses don&'t want to ship sensitive information off to public cloud servers, especially if they&'re in regulated industries. And for time-sensitive tasks like, say, computerized trading, firms may not want to give up the edge they get from running their own servers. That doesn&'t mean companies can&'t embrace cloud computing. The notion that the cloud is &''all or nothing&'' is a myth, Amazon.com CTO Werner Vogels, a big public-cloud proponent, said earlier this year. Some businesses are beginning to set up their own cloud-like pools of computing resources, called private clouds. They use the same kind of over-the-Internet architectures as public clouds, but they&'re reserved for the use of the organization and can be firewalled off from the public Internet for a higher level of security and performance. The best-of-both-worlds mix, where businesses use private clouds for their most important computing tasks and public clouds for occasional peaks of demand or less-sensitive tasks, like serving up images on a website, is the hybrid cloud. And it could be the way forward for businesses that aren&'t ready to sail all the way to the cloud.Startups and big software companies are gearing up for the hybrid-cloud opportunity. Eucalyptus Systems, a startup which recently raised $20 million, is making tools that help businesses adapt their applications to run on hybrid clouds. Microsoft and SAP are increasingly talking about hybrid clouds, where their software is available for installation on customer-owned servers and also provided as a service over the Internet.Odds are that the public cloud will be the infrastructure that inevitably wins out, especially as the strength of their security gets tested and proven to the satisfaction of customers and regulators. But hybrid clouds could win in the short-term, as a way to get businesses started on cloud architectures. And in some ways they live up to the ultimate promise of cloud computing &8212' that it doesn&'t matter where our servers are physically located. Public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud &8212' as long as it&'s in the cloud, and we&'re getting more efficient, we&'re headed in the right direction.Next Story: AdMob investor backs mobile ad startup MoPub Previous Story: Online game distributor OnLive plans to stream movies next yearPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cloud computing, cloud infrastructure, hybrid cloud, private cloud, public cloud, software as a serviceCompanies: Amazon.com, Dell, Eucalyptus Systems, Joyent, RackspacePeople: Jason Hoffman, Werner Vogels Tags: cloud computing, cloud infrastructure, hybrid cloud, private cloud, public cloud, software as a serviceCompanies: Amazon.com, Dell, Eucalyptus Systems, Joyent, RackspacePeople: Jason Hoffman, Werner VogelsMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.

As we&'re all well aware, Facebook doesn&'t offer an iPad app. Well, maybe we&'re not all so aware of that. Because Friendly, an unofficial app made by Oecoway, has been a massive hit on the platform. In fact, it has over 500,000 active users, co-founder&nbsp'Cyril Moutran tells us. And that&'s pretty amazing considering that they have been charging for the app. But you can probably expect that number to explode even further, as they&'ve decided to make the app free.To be clear, there will still be a $0.99 version of Friendly, but the only difference from the new free version is that it won&'t have ads. Undoubtedly, most users won&'t care about that and will opt for the free version. And the app will rack up even more downloads because 1) again, Facebook doesn&'t have an official app and 2) Friendly is a very solid way to use Facebook on the device.&''We&'re making Friendly for Facebook free, because we want to expand our user base and put Friendly for Facebook in as many peoplea4a4s hands as possible,&'' Moutran says. The service essentially takes the touch-optimized version of Facebook&'s site and wraps it in their own native app wrapper. But this allows them to add more functionality, such as the ability to change fonts and colors. Plus you can browse the web within it and quickly share back to Facebook. You can also easily manage multiple Facebook accounts from the app.The app also brings a native app look, feel, and performance to Facebook. That may not sound like much, but given the usage numbers, it definitely can&'t be overlooked. But while Friendly is very good, let&'s be honest: if Facebook had their own app, most people would likely use that. People currently searching for &''Facebook&'' on the iPad only have the third-party options a4" and this has tricked some people. And considering that many of these apps are paid apps, that has cost people money a4" something which Facebook can&'t like too much.So did Facebook pressure Friendly to go free It doesn&'t seem that way.&nbsp'Moutran says that Facebook has been very supportive of what they&'ve been doing. &''The Facebook Platform team in particular deserves kudos for their around the clock dedication at providing help and guidance to developers on iOS SDK,&'' he says.Maybe we should take Friendly going free as a sign that an official app is coming That also doesn&'t seem all that likely given Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg&'s recent words about the possibility. While Moutran declined to talk about their revenue numbers, if you simply take the 500,000 user number and multiply it by the one dollar the app had sold for, you get $500,000 (before Apple takes their 30 percent cut). Of course, Moutran did say the 500,000 is active users, so it&'s possible the app has been downloaded quite a bit more, bringing Oecoway even more money. Now they&'ll likely have to replace a lot of that money with ad revenue. Will it add up Who knows, but this move will undoubtedly bring them a lot more users.&''Wea4a4re really excited because Friendly for Facebook has been an extremely successful paid application. Ita4a4s held the top overall spot for paid applications for more than 40 days, and ita4a4s been the top paid social media iPad app since we launched version 1.0. But we want as many people as possible to be able to experience Friendly for Facebook so thata4a4s why we are making it free,&''&nbsp'Moutran reiterates. That&'s great news for Facebook users and iPad lovers alike. You can find the free version of Friendly here. And the paid version here.CrunchBase InformationFacebookiPadInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

So, it appears that the first Chrome OS netbooks are set to launch in the next few weeks. And it now appears that the first ones will be Google-branded versions, built by a third-party manufacturer. And you can be sure that Google is already testing these internally, as they do this for basically all of their products leading up to launch. And a few more hints about them may reside in the Chromium issue tracker. For several months, Google has been internally testing Chrome OS on a wide variety of netbooks. These have included Asus&nbsp'Eee machines, Lenovo machines, Dell machines, and a few others. How do I know Because they&'re often listed under &''Type of computer&'' in bug reports. But more interesting has been the numerous references to &''dogfood&'' machines. &''Dogfooding&'' is the name given to the process of internally testing your own product. Again, Google has been doing this for months. But a &''dogfood&'' machine could be anything. Perhaps it&'s just one of the brands mentioned above slightly modified. But recently, the number of bugs referencing &''dogfood&'' machines has seemed to give way to two new types of machines: &''Mario&'' and &''Andretti&''.For non-IndyCar fans, Andretti is basically the Michael Jordan of the sport. He&'s often referenced as the fastest driver on the planet. And that&'s important because Google has made it very clear that perhaps the main key to their Chrome OS netbooks is that they must be fast. They must boot in seconds. Basically, instantly. They must be like Mario Andretti.Obviously, it&'s just a guess. But given the number of references to &''Mario&'' and &''Andretti&'' machines, I&'m thinking these may be the nicknames that Google has given to their dogfood Chrome OS devices that they mean to release next month. The names didn&'t start appears in the logs until mid-October, and since then, references have increased in the reports.Further, more detailed reports list the OS version as &''Indy&'' (the platform is &''Chrome OS&''). Cute, Google. If my guess is right, the next question is if it will be &''Mario&'' or &''Andretti&'' that crosses the finish line next month and gets released Or perhaps both will Fasten your&nbsp'seat belts.[photo: flickr/Thomas Duchnicki]CrunchBase InformationGoogle Chrome OSInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

When searching for airfares online, travellers are typically required to know ahead of time exactly where theya4a4re going and when, and they must input those details in a specified way. Not so on Adioso, a site that uses natural language and allows for open-ended exploration. Now in beta, Australian Adioso is a4Aa travel search engine for spontaneous and adventurous travellers,a4 in the words of its creators. The sitea4a4s natural-language search interface allows users to conduct searches in which both the date and the destination can be flexible, such as a4ASan Francisco to NYC late October,a4 for example, or a4AAustin to anywhere under $200 next week.a4 They can also investigate trips to anywhere in a continent or region, such as a4ANew York to Europe.a4 Adioso provides a routing engine that interconnects flights from low-cost airlines, so it also allows budget-conscious consumers to identify the lowest-cost route between any two places, domestically or internationally.Judging by all the ongoing efforts to refine travel search, ita4a4s clear therea4a4s still plenty of opportunity for both generalized improvement and niche variation.
RediLearning, a Florida startup that delivers continuing education coursework online to nurses, therapists and other senior care health workers closed a $1.75 million round of funding from angel investors, SEC filings revealed today. The chief executive and co-founder of RediLearning, Michael Hemlepp, said that the company would use the capital to &''Create additional content and features for our proprietary learning management system, and hire at least ten more employees over the next year.&'' The company has 20 full-time employees today. Its courses are Flash-based, currently. Investors in RediLearning hail from the fields of health care IT and finance, and have funded several other early stage startups, the CEO said (though the investors declined to be named). RediLearning&'s customers are major chains and operators of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health, hospice and rehabilitation centers that have employees in all fifty states. Hemlepp said his customers use RediLearning primarily because &''It organizes all of the regulations that they have to deal with to maintain compliance, and makes sure all of the appropriate, accredited training coursework is assigned to the appropriate staff member. The system then automatically reports back to human resources, which really helps these companies play defense, or stay within the regulations.&'' The senior health care market is highly regulated nationally and differs state to state. The average RediLearning customer, the company claims, will save two-thirds of the money they&'d otherwise spend on regulated healthcare compliance training. These training costs typically represent the largest line item after payroll and benefits for senior health care companies.

0 Vote(s)
