LG introduced a few new accessories to go along with its big G2X announcement today. They include the HBM-905 mono Bluetooth headset, the HBS-700 stereo Bluetooth headset, and the WCP-700 wireless charging pad.LG HBM-905(Credit:LG)The HBM-905 appears to be the successor to the LG HBM-900 Bluetooth headset, with a similar long and skinny design. It features three microphones that promise solid audio quality along with background noise suppression. Other features include the usual ability to answer, end, and reject a call, last number redial, and a multipoint function that lets you connect to two devices simultaneously. It also has name alert, a text/SMS reader, and up to 4 hours of talk time. As for the HBS-700, it isn't really a big surprise as it came out a few months ago, but LG is just making a show of it forCTIA. It has a unique and very comfortable design, which isn't always the case with stereo Bluetooth headsets. Check out our review of the LG HBS-700 for more information about it.LG Wireless Charging Pad(Credit:LG)Last but not least is the LG WCP-700 wireless charging pad. As the name suggests, it lets you charge your phone without wires. It provides audible and tactile feedback so that you know when the handset is properly placed on the pad, and it has a multi-color LED charging status indicator. We're not sure if your phone needs to have a special case attached to it in order for it to work, and are confirming that with LG. LG has said that it should fully charge your phone in about two hours.LG has not provided any pricing or availability information for the HBM-905 and the WCP-700 charging pad just yet. The HBS-700 retails for around $69.99 and is available now.

0 Vote(s)

Several weeks after rumors began to spread that the beleaguered Yahoo was on the cusp of announcing a round of layoffs before the end of the year, the company has confirmed "personnel changes" of several hundred employees across its offices worldwide."Today's personnel changes are part of our ongoing strategy to best position Yahoo for revenue growth and margin expansion and to support our strategy to deliver differentiated products to the marketplace," a statement from the company confirming the layoffs explained. "We'll continue to hire on a global basis to support our key priorities. Yahoo is grateful for the important contributions made by the employees affected by this reduction. We are offering severance packages and outplacement services to these employees."AllThingsD reported on Monday night that the layoffs would be Tuesday and could affect up to 700 employees. The final carnage looks to be slightly less than that, about four percent of employees, or about 560 people in total.About three months after current CEO Carol Bartz took over from predecessor Jerry Yang, the company cut about 5 percent of its workforce. A month prior to Bartz's arrival, the company had cut about 10 percent, and another 1,000 early in 2008.

0 Vote(s)

Hypocrisy, sadly, is not confined to politicians. It is not confined to any of those who tell us what to do, like priests, policemen, or leather-clad librarians.Hypocrisy, you see, is one of humanity's most enduring and endearing traits.I mention this, because of the cheery case of Norwegian author Anne B. Ragde. Ragde has written books for children. She has written crime novels. She has won awards. And yet, like the rest of us pitiful, snarling humans, she may well speak out of several sides of her anatomy. You see, I am indebted to Torrent Freak for telling me that Ragde gave an interview to Norwegian newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv. In it, she described how concerned she was about e-book piracy."I have figured out that I've lost half a million kronor ($72,500) on piracy of my books, maybe more," she said.Warming to her theme, she added: "I cannot stand the thought of someone stealing something. I look at Norwegian musicians who have to do live concerts. We have nothing to live on other than the physical product."(Credit:CC BusyPrinting/Flickr)In my many dealings with Norwegians, I have found them to be scrupulously honest. They are extremely well behaved in bars, public baths, and on the beach. So I find myself pulsing with admiration that Ragde reportedly admitted that she did buy pirated purses because, well, Prada bags are frightfully expensive. They are. One imagines they only cost a few dollars to make and then you're expected to pay thousands for the privilege of being seen with them. However, you remember that part about Ragde's slight envy of musicians Well, apparently Ragde's son, Jo, decided to pipe up just at the moment that his mom might have wished he'd have put on hisiPod and hummed a little Gaga. For Jo Ragde reportedly offered: "You have a pirated MP3 collection. We copied the first 1,500 songs from one place and 300 from another."And so there we had a twist that any crime author would enjoy. Initially, Ragde apparently admitted the family enjoyed an iPod positively brimming with questionably obtained material. However, once her (and her son's) comments were promulgated further, she reportedly first suggested that Jo was the pirate. Then she declared that, this Christmas, she would delete the iPod's contents.I am concerned, though, that hers in an over-reaction.Why must humans continuously try to sell themselves as good when society is fully aware there doesn't exist a member of the species who can resist the temptation of free If you minimize the fear of getting caught, humans will steal yourcar, your lover and your music. Yes, they will even steal your books on occasion. Companies like Facebook and Google understand this very fully, which is why they give us something for free and make money from our quite hideous rush to the trough. And yet poor Ragde might be vilified because she reportedly exposed her innards in a blissfully honest manner. Oh, Ragde, you like writing books. You want to make money out of it. This is quite understandable.Perhaps I might suggest a line extension, something that might help sales You could create sung versions of your books. You could sing them yourself. And then you could offer these sung versions online.Of course, a sung version of your book might last eight or nine hours. But this might be the beginning of an entirely new genre: the modern literary opera. It's what the world's been waiting for. People will hum sung versions of crime novels at work. They will pay good money to hear the melodic death of, say, a drug dealer or a pimp. They will sing your detective's dialog in management meetings. They will pay good money for the privilege. I'm sure of it.

0 Vote(s)

A commercial pilot project for carbon sequestration and large-scale algae biofuel manufacturing in Australia has been successfully completed, OriginOil announced today. The company partnered with Australian energy company MBD Energy through a licensing agreement that has allowed both companies to share intellectual property on proprietary algae-to-fuel conversion processes. The algae-to-fuel process in this case begins with an existing coal power plant.CO2, given off as a byproduct of MBD Energy's coal-fired power plants, is captured by micro-algae. The micro-algae convert that captured CO2 and use it to reproduce, creating higher amounts of algae, which can then be used as algae biomass for fuel. That part of the process was developed by MBD Energy. The algae biomass is then put through OriginOil's process. Its algae biomass is converted into oil that can be used for biofuel, while leaving behind concentrated algae biomass byproducts that can be used to make things like plastics.OriginOil has developed a one-step process in which the oil, water, and algae biomass separate out over time, making it easier and more cost-effective to retrieve, according to OriginOil. (Time-lapse video for OriginOil extraction process posted on Vimeo.) As a result of the project's success, MBD Energy, known for its coal mining, will now begin adding algae production to three of its power plants in Australia."According to MBD Energy, each of its power station projects has the potential to grow to 80-hectare commercial plants, each capable of producing 11 million liters of oil for plastics and transport fuel. MBD Energy estimates that, subject to performance and joint approvals, the projects have potential at full scale to consume more than half of each power station's flue-gas emissions," OriginOil said in a statement.OiriginOil says its ultimate goal is to transform algae "into a true competitor to petroleum."While the idea is innovative, these are certainly not the first companies to try making lemonade out of lemons with regard to coal. Fellow Australian companies, Linc Energy and Bio Clean Coal announced in 2007 that they were building a bioreactor prototype for converting coal power plant emissions into algae biomass that could be used as fuel. In 2008, Inventure Chemical and Seambiotic announced a partnership to develop algae biofuels from a coal-fired power plant. And Cambridge, Mass.-based GreenFuel Technologies also has a process for growing algae from pollution.

0 Vote(s)

If you thought you were safe from hearing more about Microsoft&'s ill-fated Kin phones, think again. Verizon is apparently gearing up to offer the phones a second chance on its network, except this time in a stripped-down feature phone capacity, according to a leaked Verizon road map revealed by mobile site PPC Geeks. As easy as it is to ridicule the Kin phones (even Microsoft employees hated them), they could actually make decent feature phones &8212' devices that sit between smartphones and &''dumbphones&''. The problem is that they should have been feature phones from the start. Instead, Verizon marketed them as smartphones and paired them with expensive data plans. Since phone buyers could pay the same $29.99 monthly data plan for a killer Android phone like the original Droid, it&'s no surprise the Kin phones died an early death. With feature phone data pricing, perhaps somewhere between $10 and $15 a month, the Kin phones can actually appeal to the youth demographic Microsoft completely misread the first time around. The phones will be losing the data-heavy &''Loop&'' feature &8212' which automatically uploaded users&' pictures and other media to a personalized website &8212' Engadget reports.Still, the phones will be able to take advantage of Microsoft&'s Zune Pass, which offers users unlimited access to music for $15 a month. At this point, the Kin phones are more like Windows Phone 7-lite, as they should have been from the start.Next Story: Shopping startup Retailigence stocks up with DFJ and Dave McClure Previous Story: A lean startup isna4a4t necessarily a small onePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: feature phones, Kin, Kin Two, Kine One, smartphones, Windows Phone 7Companies: Microsoft, Verizon, Verizon Wireless Tags: feature phones, Kin, Kin Two, Kine One, smartphones, Windows Phone 7Companies: Microsoft, Verizon, Verizon WirelessDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
photo a4s 2005 Peter Shanks | more info(via: Wylio)Eric Butler&'s Firefox browser extension Firesheep took the Internet cafe world by storm a couple weeks ago when we and others wrote about the controversial plugin that compromises your social networking connection data. While many people have come up with solutions that involve forcing sites to use HTTPS, Zscaler Security has just released a countermeasure called BlackSheep, whicha4sactually detects when Firesheep is hijacking your session.Firesheep accesses your Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and other logins through cookies &8212' Blacksheep subverts this by tricking Firesheep with a fake login cookie and alerting the user when Firesheep is detected, displaying the IP address of the person using it (see below), and warning the user to log off.BlackSheep is currently the only available solution that attempts to pit Firesheep against itself.a4s&''BlackSheep leverages much of the Firesheep code, but the twist is that rather than being used to hijack sessions, it instead detects when a session is being hijacked and alerts the user,&'' says BlackSheep developer Julien Sobrier. And because BlackSheep and Firesheep use much of the same code, you can&'t run them both in the same Firefox session. But why would you want to do thatYou can download BlackSheep here. And learn more about Firesheep in the video below.

0 Vote(s)

Stribe launched at our TechCrunch50 event last year as a way to easily add a social networking layer to any site. (A few months later, they won the LeWeb startup competition.) By July of this year, they were open for all to try out and use. But for some massive networks of sites, that wasn&'t good enough. They needed an API. So Stribe built one.Specifically, Guild Launch, an online community for massively multiplayer online games, needed a way to connect the more than 50,000 websites under their umbrella. So Stribe came up with a REST API that connects to Guild Launch&'s databases and allows users to connect to any of the sites with a single sign on.The result is that the entire Guild Launch community can talk to one another no matter which site they&'re actually on. That community counts more than 2 million people as members. And since they made the API, Stribe figured it would be worth it to open it up to all. So they&'re doing that.&nbsp'a4AWe are very excited to open our API and demonstrate how a gaming platform managing millions of users can take advantage of Stribe,&'' Stribe co-founder Kamel Zeroual says.He also notes that they&'re looking to get involved in the virtual goods market with their service.CrunchBase InformationStribeInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

The Federal Communications Commission voted today to lay down a number of basic rules that ban Internet service providers from blocking specific content and help keep the web open. The new rules keep ISPs from blocking specific websites and other content. The rules also allow ISPs to throttle web connections if they believe their customers are using too much bandwidth, but require the ISPs to be &''reasonable&'' when doing so. Internet providers also have to have a greater level of transparency. But wireless telecommunications companies were exempt from the packet discrimination rules a4" which is a bit of a head scratcher. Mobile web use is growing rapidly and some actually rely on wireless networks for their Internet usage through mobile hot-spot devices. Without those rules in place, wireless companies are free to stop some smartphone users from taking advantage of their data plans by throttling download and upload speeds. Both Google and Verizon agreed that wireless web access requires a different set of tools and technology. The chief executives for both companies said too many rules would hamper a provider&'s ability to optimize its network, a suggestion FCC chairman Julius Genachowski (pictured left) was less than thrilled with. Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that both companies had been in discussions for over a year, and that they already had discussions with the FCC.Government officials have been arguing about net neutrality for some time now. The idea first came up when the FCC ordered Comcast to halt plans to slow Internet traffic for peer-to-peer file sharers. A federal appeals court said that the FCC had overstepped its authority. The vote happened right down party lines, with both Republicans on the committee voting against the new net neutrality rules.Back when President Barack Obama was campaigning for office, he made net neutrality a big part of his tech policy platform. But as wireless Internet use continues to grow, it&'s unclear whether the FCC will step in and begin regulating that space and lay out a new set of net neutrality rules for wireless providers.Previous Story: Call of Duty Black Ops sales top $1BPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: free web, net neutralityCompanies: FCC, Federal Communications Commission, Google, VerizonPeople: Eric Schmidt Tags: free web, net neutralityCompanies: FCC, Federal Communications Commission, Google, VerizonPeople: Eric SchmidtMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Fresh off one of the most legendary media meltdowns of all time, actor Charlie Sheen is now seeking a social media intern to manage his online shenanigans. It&'s a sign of how mainstream social media has become to every business &8212' even the personal brand maintenance on which Hollywood careers are built. And it&'s also a sign of how clever startups manage to turn every pop-culture trend into a business opportunity. The position is listed on Internships.com, a company founded by former MP3.com president Robin Richards. That startup appears eager to ride Sheen&'s publicity wave a4" as soon as the main site opens up, an advertisement for the Sheen internship shows up.Internships.com was founded in 2010 and claims to have more than 40,000 internship applications available across the United States. Companies like Marvel, Sony and Sirius XM also have applications on the site.Sheen a4" one of the highest-paid actors on television a4" was recently punted from his gig on TV show Two and a Half Men after reports of drug and alcohol abuse made headlines throughout the week. Sheen&'s philosophies were particularly popular on Twitter, the microblogging network on which he attracted a million subscribers in his first day. His pet phrases generated a number of trending topics on the service, which Twitter has recently started promoting heavily on its mobile app in an attempt to create new venues for advertising, which has only recently become a focus for the well-funded company.Applicants for the position should have tiger blood in their veins and must be all about winning, according to the site where the application is posted, in a nod to two of Sheen&'s favored twitticisms. The internship is naturally a full-time gig a4" eight weeks throughout the summer.&''The TigerBloodIntern is expected to be proactive, monitor the day-to-day activities on the major social media platforms, prepare for exciting online projects and increase Charliea4a4s base of followers,&'' according to the site, which titled the position in the form of a hashtag, an abbreviated format Twitter users favor for tagging a post with a particular topic. &''You will learn how to promote and develop the social media network of Hollywooda4a4s most trending celebrity.&''Social-media savvy folks who have a penchant for winning should be sure to apply before the deadline Friday.Next Story: YouTube buys video production startup Next New Networks Previous Story: Biofuels to anti-age your face.
Some of the most common complaints about Android are related to Android Market, the official Google storefront through which the vast majority of Android users get their Apps (yes, you can download from other sources, but most people don&'t). Most of the problems have revolved around international support (which the Android team has recently improved) but now there&'s another issue that&'s becoming a problem: downtime. For the last hour or so I haven&'t been able to download apps or updates from Android Market a4"a4severy time I try I get a &''Download Unsuccessful&'' error. Many other Twitter users are reporting similar problems. Some tweets have suggested that the downtime may be related to the upcoming PayPal support. It&'s possible this is only affecting a fraction of Android users a4" I&'ve reached out to Google for comment.Update, 3:15PM PST: The problems seem to have been resolved for me a4"a4swe&'re asking Google what the issue was and if it&'s been fixed.Update, 5:00PM PST: The Android developer twitter account just tweeted that the issue should be fixed:Market download issue seems resolved. Problem started around noon PDT, lasted a few hours. Sorry about that.To be fair, Apple&'s App Store isn&'t exactly perfect. I&'ve personally come across a frustrating error on my iPad a few times that says that my downloads have failed, only to have it work when I try downloading the same app a few minutes later. But Market is still clearly behind a4"a4sthe UI isn&'t as nice looking as the App Store&'s, there isn&'t support for in-app purchases, and for the most part developers aren&'t having as much success getting users to pay for their apps. Fortunately Google has a total Market revamp in the works that was previewed at Google I/O. But it&'s unclear how soon this is coming a4"a4swhen I asked Google if it would be part of the upcoming Gingerbread update, they declined to comment.

0 Vote(s)
