Anonymous warns about attack on Federal Reserve in a YouTube video.(Credit:Anonymous)The Anonymous hacker group says it plans to target the Federal Reserve starting tomorrow, most likely with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack designed to shut down the agency's Web site.In a YouTube video, the group is calling for public protests until Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke steps down. The campaign, dubbed Operation Empire State Rebellion, is timed to coincide with Flag Day in the U.S., which is June 14 and commemorates the adoption of the national flag in 1777. The group, which has made a name for itself organizing random anonymous Internet users and getting them to turn their computers against targets in DoS attacks, is critical of the Federal Reserve's involvement in the global financial crisis and what it says is the politicization of the global banking industry. A spokesperson from the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C., did not immediately provide comment today. This weekend, Anonymous took down the site of the Spanish national police in retaliation for the arrest last week of three people allegedly connected with the group. Last week, Anonymous also hit a Turkish government site. Other Anonymous official targets have been Iran and Egypt, but the group is probably best known for its DDoS attack on Sony in early April and attacks against PayPal, Visa and MasterCard sites last year after those companies stopped allowing WikiLeaks to receive contributions through their sites. Meanwhile, someone broke into the network of the International Monetary Fund recently and stole data, although Anonymous is not believed to be responsible for that attack. It's possible that the IMF breach was a result of an employee getting infected by a malicious e-mail, since the agency reportedly is now warning employees not to open e-mails and video links without first authenticating the source. Separately, the LulzSec group was busy posting what it said was source code and passwords it got from hacking Bethesda Softworks, a subsidiary of gaming company ZeniMax Media, as well as data that appeared to come from a U.S. Senate database.
Verizon Wireless Xperia Play hands-on (photos) ORLANDO, Fla.--Sony Ericsson didn't offer any new phones at CTIA 2011, but we did get the chance to handle the official Verizon Wireless version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. What's more, Sony Ericsson also revealed that the gaming Android phone will land in the United States either late next month or in early May.In fact, Verizon Wireless may be the first carrier in the world to get the Xperia Play. Rogers in Canada may beat it with a release of the GSM handset on April 14, but either way it means that North America will get the Xperia Play before Europe and Asia. That's quite a change from previous Sony Ericsson devices. And did we mention this is the first Sony Ericsson CDMA device in yearsExcept for the carrier branding, Verizon's Xperia Play is unchanged from the global handset we saw at Mobile World Congress. Inside, however, you will see some modifications. Verizon has stocked the phone with the Android Kindle app, Skype Mobile for voice, and a few of its own services like VZ Navigator and the V Cast App Store. That's a decent assortment, fortunately, and it doesn't reek of bloatware. Verizon's handset will come with six gaming titles: Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Star Battalion, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Madden NFL '11, The Sims 3, and Tetris. Users will be able to purchase games form either the Android Market or Big Red's V Cast App Store. The selection of titles should be the same, Sony Ericsson says, with the only difference being the method of payment. While charges from the latter option will appear on your Verizon bill, you'll need to pay separately for Android Market purchases. We should get a review unit in the coming weeks. And, of course, we'll let you know the official release date and price when Verizon spills the details.

0 Vote(s)

Stomp.io, an online service that brings together people looking to meet up at &''kooky&'' events, announced that it is launching today at the Launch conference in San Francisco.&''It&'s like Jackass, but for nerds,&'' said All Things D&'s Kara Swisher, referring to MTV&'s offbeat stunt show. The service is like Meetup meets Groupon. Anyone can post a crazy event a4"like squirrel fishing, where a bunch of people will meet, attach nuts to strings and drive squirrels nuts. Users then sign up for the event and let the craziness commence.Stomp.io will also offer deals for some of the more crazy events to attract more users. The more events a user goes to, the more points and badges they can earn.Stomp.io also has an iPhone and an Android application that lets users upload photos and rate Stomp meetups. The application learns over time which meetups the person likes and begins to tailor the application to show those types of meetups. The iPhone application then creates a scrapbook of all the photos Stomp users have taken at meetups.&''Stomp isna4a4t about finding fun things to do a4" ita4a4s about the people we do it with,&'' said Stomp.io co-founderNick Tommarello. &''It&'s an adventure-oriented MeetUp.&''The sweet spot for the application is the bunch of crazy college graduates that have a lot of disposable income and time, but aren&'t restricted by all the crazy responsibilities that parents have, Plante said. It&'s a group that is looking to spend money on experiences rather than buying things a4" but don&'t quite have the excuse to the stupid things it did in college.Next Story: FTW syncs your saved games across devices Previous Story: Screener.co gives stock trader tools to Joe BlowPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: daily deals, meetupsCompanies: Groupon, Meetup, Stomp.io Tags: daily deals, meetupsCompanies: Groupon, Meetup, Stomp.ioMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Top mobile device company executives obviously overestimated their ability to positively spin responses to hard-hitting questions from Wall Street Journal tech columnist Walt Mossberg, who moderated a panel discussion about new mobile device trends at the CTIA Wireless 2011 conference today in Orlando.Far from the light, casual conversation expected from an industry driven event, Mossberg took full advantage of having business leaders from five of the largest mobile device maker on stage at the same time. The discussion covered tablets replacing laptops and desktops in enterprise and how design plays a role in mobile device success as well as long-standing trends in the industry that show no sign of changing in the future.a4ACan we ever get to the point where we get rid of the carrier subsidies&8230'a4 Mossberg asked, remarking that a subsidy-free smart phone would eliminate carrier contracts, early termination fees and the like.Mossberg didna4a4t buy the response from Research In Motion SVP of Business and Platform Marketing Jeff McDowell who laid blame on the carriers, which use subsidies as a valuable marketing tactic (something that isn&'t likely to go away). Conveniently, McDowell omitted key details about his companya4a4s relationship with those wireless carriers, who are estimated to pay almost two-thirds of the total cost depending on the device model.a4AOur main channel of market for the smart phones is the carriers. Thata4a4s a strategic decision that was made many years ago. For us to change that decision would be tough to do overnight,a4 to which Mossberg replied a4AAll right, Ia4a4ll give you two, three nights.a4McDowell got hammered yet again over RIMa4a4s Playbook tablet &8212' or more specifically the devicea4a4s Bridge technology that allows data syncing between Blackberry smart phones and created specifically for their most dedicated customers.a4ASo when I write my column, I can tell my audience not to bother if they arena4a4t huge blackberry usersa4 Mossberg said, later acknowledging that the Playbook offered a full experience and that the Bridge technology was simply complimentary to those owning a Blackberry.Samsung Chief Product &amp' Technology Officer Omar Khan also got drilled. He seemed well aware of Mossberg actively dismantling any spin, but continued touting the companya4a4s new Galaxy 10.1-inch and 8.9-inch tablets as comparable to Motorolaa4a4s Atrix smartphone/netbook combo when paired with keyboard accessories.a4ALots of devices have keyboard docks, this is something different,a4 Mossberg said, which Khan agreed with and added that any innovation is good for the entire industry. The huge potential for growth from Galaxy-branded accessories Khan spoke of was met with a question from Mossberg about whether it opens them up to the same kind of flack that Apple gets for being closed off from third-party manufacturers unless they work directly with Samsung. Rather than address whether it was a concern, Khan began explaining how they invited Belkin on stage with them during an event in Barcelona to announce the Galaxy 2, but was quickly cut off.&''Steve Jobs brings people on stage, too. And they still get all that flack,&'' Mossberg said. &''Everything you&'ve said can be said about Apple, too.&''Thanks to Sprint, which is sponsoring VentureBeat&'s coverage from this week&'s CTIA conference.
