Cisco Systems designed a surveillance system to help the Chinese government track and ultimately suppress members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement, according to a lawsuit the group filed against the network equipment maker. The lawsuit, which was filed Thursday in Federal District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose, alleges Cisco supplied and helped maintain a surveillance system known as the "Golden Shield" that allowed the Chinese government to track and censor the group's Internet activities. As a result of Cisco's technology, Falun Gong members suffered false imprisonment, torture, and wrongful death, according the lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of the religious group by the Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Law Foundation. The 52-page lawsuit names Chairman and CEO John Chambers and two other executives as defendants and seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages and enjoin Cisco from further unlawful activity.A Cisco spokesperson said there was "no basis" for the allegations in the lawsuit and that the company intended to defend the lawsuit "vigorously.""Cisco does not operate networks in China or elsewhere, nor does Cisco customize our products in any way that would facilitate censorship or repression," the representative said in a statement, adding that the company sells the same equipment in China that it sells in other nations in compliance with U.S. government regulations. Falun Gong is described in the lawsuit as a peaceful religious movement of about 70 million to 100 million followers that was founded in 1992 and utilizes the Internet as its primary point of congregation for religious activities. However, the Chinese government began to view the group as a political threat and developed a plan for purging the Falun Gong from the country in 1999, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, alleges that Golden Shield--described in Cisco marketing materials as Policenet--resulted in the arrest of as many as 5,000 Falun Gong members. Cisco "competed aggressively" for the contracts to design the Golden Shield system "with full knowledge that it was to be used for the suppression of the Falun Gong religion," according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit was brought on behalf of 11 plaintiffs who are described as suffering torture and sometimes death at the hands of the Chinese government. The lawsuit listed eight of the plaintiffs anonymously to avoid "retaliation and further human rights abuses." Three plaintiffs are identified by name: Ivy He, of Canada' Liu Guifu, of New York state' and Charles Lee, an American citizen who traveled to China in 2003 and was detained at the airport and tortured until his 2006 release.Updated at 11:35 p.m. to include Cisco statement.

0 Vote(s)

Pantech Caper is a basic messenger for Verizon&39's prepaid service. (Credit:Pantech)Even though Pantech didn't officially make an appearance atCTIA 2011, we did discover a new Pantech handset showcased at the PCD booth. The Pantech Caper is meant for Verizon Wireless's prepaid service, and has a suitably basic spec sheet. The messaging phone has a 2.2-inch display, and a slate-style form factor that places the QWERTY keyboard right on the front. Features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and the usual messaging features. We're still mostly in the dark about pricing and availability, but we've heard it's been out on sale for a few weeks now at major retail centers like Wal-Mart for around $60. We'll get the official details as soon as we can.

0 Vote(s)

There seems currently to be a debate about whether we should all have one identity online (as Mark Zuckerberg would prefer) or whether we should be able to protect ourselves with a certain anonymity.Perhaps rapper and headphone creator and salesman 50 Cent might be in the former camp. For he seems to have concealed nothing of himself on his Twitter feed when he heard about the Japanese earthquake.First, he offered: "Wave will hit 8am them crazy white boys gonna try to go surfing."Not content with that amusement he followed up with: "Look this is very serious people I had to evacuate all my hoe's from LA, Hawaii and Japan. I had to do it. Lol."While you continue to lol, might I tell you that he then thought about this humor and tweeted: "Nah this is nuts but what can anyone do about it. Let's pray for anyone who has lost someone."(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)So that's alright then. Or perhaps not. For then he felt compelled to tweet a further explanation of his state of mind: "Some of my tweets are ignorant I do it for shock value. Hate it or love it. I'm cool either way 50cent."Are you cool either way Or is it a little too Kenneth Cool for you I mean, Kenneth Cole. The famed shoe store owner, on hearing about the uprising in Egypt, tweeted that Egypt must be in uproar about his new collection. Cole later apologized and removed the tweet. 50 Cent, not so much. It's just lil' ole' Fitty having a little fun, he wants you to believe. And perhaps he knows his audience well. Perhaps he understands just how much his followers enjoy a little shock value. But 50 Cent is not the only person who believes the Japanese earthquake is funny. ESPN reports that Cappie Pondexter, a WNBA player for the New York Liberty. has already apologized for offering this tweeted observation about the Japanese disaster: "What if God was tired of the way they treated their own people in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes."Before her more than 9,000 followers could respond with their own philosophy of life, Pondexter reportedly posted another tweet: "u just never knw! They did pearl harbor so u can't expect anything less."Personally, I expect nothing at all. However, Pondexter removed the tweets. In explanation, she reportedly offered: "I didn't realize that my words could be interpreted in the manner which they were."Realization is often a difficult thing. In Pondexter's case, her tweets might cost her some money (her team reportedly has had a conversation with her on the subject of her posts.) 50 Cent's tweets still stand proud, unremoved. He seems to feel this is water off a rapper's back. Some will, no doubt, find nothing wrong with these tweets. Some will condemn what they see as the manifest ignorance these posts demonstrate. Others, though, might at least feel that, thanks to the very public spontaneity of Twitter, they have come a little closer to the essence of their beloved celebrities.(Oh, and this just in, comedian Gilbert Gottfriend has been fired as the voice of the AFLAC duck for, yes, tweeting jokes about the Japanese quake.)

0 Vote(s)

A squabble occurred between Microsoft and the Finnish game house Rovio, maker of the incredibly popular mobile game Angry Birds. Microsoft used the Angry Birds logo when launching its mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7, without Rovio&'s consent, which didn&'t go down well with the company. But now, Rovio has confirmed a Windows Phone 7 version of the hit game.Bygones, rightIn truth, it makes a whole lot of sense for Rovio to let go whatever grievances it may have from the incident. The company is all about saturating the market with their game across all devices, cellphones, tablets and game consoles alike. It has been very aggressive in bringing its hit game to any and all platforms, and it also nabbed a tie-in with an animated movie. In addition to the Microsoft deal, Rovio says it is developing a 3D version of the game, but it hasn&'t yet announced any release dates. Rovio has confirmed the game will be available in 3D for Nintendo 3DS, but other devices are yet unconfirmed. The 3D versions should be coming along at a nice pace, though, since Rovio acquired 3D gaming company Pixelgene back in 2006.And for Microsoft, this comes as another sweet bit of news after announcing a major deal with Finnish cellphone maker Nokia. Not only will Windows Phone 7 have huge distribution on devices due to an alliance with a strong manufacturer, it will also have access to one of the hottest mobile games.Rovio hasn&'t yet announced when it will release the Windows Phone 7 version of the game.Calling all developers: We want to write up your app for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight!
