President Obama on a computer in Northern Michigan University last month.(Credit:Pete Souza/The White House)Despite callingApple's iPad, among other modern-day entertainment gadgets, a conduit for distraction less than a year ago, U.S. President Barack Obama has been outed as an iPad owner himself. As The Wall Street Journal reports, Obama detailed that fact during a town hall meeting with Spanish-language network Univision, which took place earlier today. During an interview with Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, Obama said he does in fact have an iPad, and even tethers it to his high-security BlackBerry cell phone. Obama also noted that he owns his own computer, joking to Ramos and the audience about the idea of him having to borrow one from someone else:Ramos: Not long ago I was having a conversation with my son. He's only 12 years old, and he couldn't believe that I grew up in a world where there were no cell phones, no Internet, no computers. (Laughter.) So do you have your BlackBerry with you, or do you have aniPhone What do you haveObama: You know, I took my BlackBerry off for this show, because I didn't want it going off, and that would be really embarrassing. But usually I carry a BlackBerry around.Ramos: Do you have an iPadObama: I do have an iPad. Ramos: Your own [a] computerObama: I've got my own computer.Ramos: Very well. (Laughter.)Obama: I mean, Jorge, I'm the President of the United States. You think I've got a -- (laughter and applause) -- you think I've got to go borrow somebody's computer (Laughter.) Hey, man, can I borrow your computer (Laughter.) How about you You've got oneIn a commencement speech to students of Hampton University last May, Obama admitted to not knowing how to workApple's iPod or iPad, or Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation game consoles. Obama had also referred to the devices as turning information into a "distraction, a diversion," and "a form of entertainment" that kept people from empowering themselves. The flip-flop on that particular topic is certainly a testament to the iPad being more than an entertainment device, even if that's what Obama is using his for. Perhaps we'll soon have a list of Obama's favorite apps if he's as happy to share them as he was with his NCAA basketball tournament picks.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft will be formally launching the next version of its Internet Explorer browser, IE9, at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSWi) on Monday--an interesting place to launch, given that the Austin, Texas, geek fest is packed full of the hordes who have long since ditched Internet Explorer for the decidedly hipper pastures ofFirefox,Safari, or Chrome. The new browser, which had its first and only release candidate land in users' hands in early February, will fully launch to the public at 9 Pacific time that night. In a blog post, Internet Explorer senior director Ryan Gavin described the browser as offering up "a more beautiful web."On its release day, Microsoft is having a press briefing where Gavin said there are still "a few surprises left." Later that night, Microsoft will be throwing a party in Austin in celebration of the new browser, with hipster-friendly rock act Yeasayer headlining the event.Among the new features in IE9 is a refreshed look with the browser taking up less space than previous versions of IE, as well as a way to pin sites to the Windows task bar. Sites can then program their pages to act more like desktop applications with things like notifications, and theWindows 7 Jump List feature, which can hop users to specific parts of a Web page. IE9 also brings performance improvements, including faster start times and a new JavaScript engine called Chakra that Microsoft has proven to be faster at the WebKit SunSpider benchmark test than competitors like Chrome, Opera, Firefox, and Safari. On the security side, IE9 also adds support for "do not track" through lists that users can subscribe to, as well as a way to filter ActiveX content from pages. The new browser continues to be offered only to users of Windows Vista and Windows 7, leaving users of XP--which is the most popular OS at 45.3 percent of Windows users (according to W3schools)-- with IE8. For more on IE9, take a look at CNET Download.com's first look at its release candidate. CNET News's Josh Lowensohn contributed to this report.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Next New Networks)Video host YouTube today announced that it has acquired Web video production company Next New Networks.YouTube says the newly bought production team will be on the forefront of testing new YouTube technologies, as well as acting as an incubator for up and coming video talent."Within YouTube, Next New Networks will be a laboratory for experimentation and innovation with the team working in a hands on way with a wide variety of content partners and emerging talent to help them succeed on YouTube," Tom Pickett, YouTube's director of Global Content Operations, wrote on a company blog."We are thrilled with the new capability the team brings and the positive impact it will have making our YouTube partners more successful," he continued.Along with the acquisition news, Pickett also outlined the company's new "YouTube Next" program, which he described as "a new team tasked with super-charging creator development and accelerating partner growth and success." Those efforts, Pickett said, included outreach programs like meet-ups and community events alongside training and education programs.Reports that YouTube was eyeing Next New Networks as an acquisition target were first reported by The New York Timesin December, though new tidbits on the sale had all but dried up since then. Pricing details of the deal have not been disclosed.Other Google acquisitions that have been YouTube-related include annotations tool Omnisio in 2008, online video platform Episodic in April of last year, and sentiment analysis and recommendation engine Fflick just last month. Out of all those, this is by far one of the boldest moves in turning YouTube into an original content creator of its own, something competitors like Microsoft are said to be cooking up to challenge existing TV content networks for viewership on Internet-connected TVs and set top boxes.

0 Vote(s)
