The all-new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, which the aviation giant formally unveiled last month, is expected to take its first flight this Sunday, March 20.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)Boeing announced today that its all-new 747-8 Intercontinental, the longest passenger plane in its history, is expected to take its first flight on Sunday.Earlier in the day, the aviation giant said that the plane--which it unveiled in a huge ceremony just last month--had passed what is called final gauntlet testing, which "simulates flight conditions to test systems and ensure flight readiness," Boeing said in a release, adding that as part of the testing process, its test pilots "put the airplane through its paces."Over the next few days, then, the plane will be subjected to "final flight readiness reviews, receipt of documentation from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and taxi testing," Boeing said. If all goes well, and if the weather permits, the plane should take to the sky sometime after 10 a.m. on Sunday.Boeing's next-gen 747-8 Intercontinental unveiled (photos) Should that happen, Boeing will have gotten the new plane from unveiling to first flight in just over a month, a great deal faster than it did with its other major new commercial airplane program, the 787 Dreamliner, which was unveiled on July 8, 2007--07/08/07--and didn't take its first flight until December 15, 2009. The cargo version of the 747-8 made its initial flight on February 8, 2010.Boeing bills the new 747-8 as the next-generation of its most iconic plane and as the most fuel- and cost-efficient passenger aircraft it has produced. One major highlight is its new wing design. Created using "the latest in computational fluid dynamics validated in the world's most sophisticated wind tunnels," Boeing said, the wings offer improved aerodynamics and larger fuel capacity while also allowing the plane to be as fast as, or faster than, any other passenger aircraft in the world. The new wing design sports "fly-by-wire spoilers and ailerons that make it possible to incorporate a flight control feature known as a maneuver load-alleviation system," Boeing said. "Pioneered on the 787 Dreamliner, it changes the lift distribution over the wing during non-normal flight conditions, reducing the load on its outboard portion." This means a smaller wing structure that is 1,400 pounds lighter than that used on the 747-current-generation 747-400, while not compromising structural integrity.Boeing is aggressively touting the plane's economic and green credentials: it is the only passenger plane in the 400- to 500-seat market, its four General Electric GEnx 2B engines use 16 percent less fuel per seat than those on the 747-400 and 11 percent less than does Airbus' giant A380.This is all possible, Boeing said, because of its use of advanced materials in the construction and design of the plane, as well as its use of the GEnx engines, and the form factor and materials of its wings. Most of the plane is made from new aluminum alloys, while it also incorporates graphite composites in the rudder, spoilers, flaps, and other areas. As designed, the 747-8 Intercontinental will carry 467 passengers in a three-class configuration, and has a range of 8,000 nautical miles. The freighter version of the 747-8 can fly up to 4,390 nautical miles. The Intercontinental has a wing span of 224 feet, 7 inches, and is 250 feet, 2 inches long. Its tail towers to 63 feet, 6 inches high. And its four GEnx-2B67 engines produce 66,500 pounds of thrust. The passenger plane's top cruising speed is Mach 0.86, while the freighter can fly at Mach 0.845.Please stay tuned for CNET's coverage of the 747-8 Intercontinental's first flight this Sunday, weather permitting.

0 Vote(s)

This blog has always had love at its heart. So I know that, at this time of year, those of you who work too hard--or merely drink too much--might be feeling lonely, lost and fearing that you will never again experience the joys of asking someone's name in the morning.I therefore give you Virtual Dating Assistants. This is a company that does all the online dating for you. Well, most of it.Virtual Dating Assistants makes heady promises on its Web site. For example: "We do it. You date. Online dating, simplified."Please allow me to show you just what "simplified" feels like. For the lowest price of $360 a month, VIDA will scour between one and three online dating sites--yes, like Match.com--and do all sorts of things that make you look better than you really are. They will write your profile. They will choose your photos. They will digitally retouch them. Yes, really. They will correspond with all potential candidates. They will, indeed, create their own jokes. And they will even manage your winks.Wink management is one of the most underrated aspects of online adoration. A wink in the wrong place at the wrong time can cause vast conniptions.(Credit:Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)Should love be even more important to you--say, $1,440-a-month important--VIDA will give you an executive briefing before you go on your date. It will give you a professional photo session so that you can decide whether you look better from the right or left side (very important if the first date is in a romantic booth in a restaurant). This so-called "executive package" even offers you something that sounds frightfully alluring: date concierge services. I know that phrase, for those of you who regularly stay in the world's finer hotels, will conjure all sorts of magical thoughts.I assume that Virtual Dating Associates uses the acronym "VIDA," rather than the more obvious "VDA", because it felt the latter might inspire certain thoughts of imperfect consequences in its services. However, VIDA founder Scott Valdez, seems very confident in the power of his persuasion. He told The Wall Street Journal that, in New York, it takes a mere five of his company's expertly argued e-mails to get to the dating stage. (Apparently, in smaller places, it takes a whopping seven.)Online dating is such a deep well of disappointments. People don't look like their pictures. They don't even vaguely resemble their alleged ages. Their idea of "sense of humor" tends to revolve around the collected works of Senator Harry Reid.So why not let someone else do the digging while you merely do the picking Surely the best way to counteract love's blindness is with your own online seeing-eye dog.

0 Vote(s)

Whether you're buying for yourself or for someone else, a cell phone can make a great gift for the holiday season. Parents can guilt their children into calling home more, young adults can graduate to their first smartphone, and cell phone newbies can finally take up the technology. Before you go to the store and take advantage of those Black Friday deals, however, there are a few points to remember. Shopping for a cell phone is a little more complicated than buying other gadgets, as you also have to consider a service provider. But fear not' CNET is here to help with everything you need to know about buying a new cell phone. And for more information, check out our cell phone buying guide and our Quick Guide to cell phone carriers.Read the latest CNET cell phone reviewsSee CNET's top cell phone picks in several categories(Credit:Image by Dino Salee/CNET)The first stepChoosing a carrier is just as important, and sometimes more important, than choosing a phone. Many shoppers will be able to skip this step because their recipient has asked for a specific device or they just don't want to switch providers. If that describes you, remember these points before forking over your cash:Service rebates will require you to sign a new contract and extend your service with the carrier, usually for two years. U.S. Cellular recently ended this practice through its Belief Project, but that's an exception. As always, you'll be subject to an early-termination fee if you end the contract before it's up. Most carriers are now prorating the fees so that the amount decreases over time.Alternatively, you can avoid a contract entirely with a prepaid phone. Most carriers limit how often a customer can claim service rebates so be sure to check if you're eligible. Keep in mind that you might have to pay an upgrade fee as well.Considering a carrierIf you're selecting a carrier, you have other points to consider. Service and coverage reliability are top priorities, but selecting the right plan for you is essential as well. We'll start with the carrier's network.Ultimately, you should base your decision on which carrier offers the best reception in your area. Because evaluating cell phone coverage requires experience with the network in a wide variety of physical locations, CNET does not rate wireless carriers, but we've partnered with Root Wireless to create a tool for determining the best carrier for your neighborhood, commute, or workplace. Word of mouth is important as well, so ask your neighbors, friends, and colleagues which carrier they use and if they're satisfied. Think also about which cellular technology a carrier uses. T-Mobile and AT&T use something called GSM, whereas Sprint, Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular, MetroPCS, and most smaller carrier use an incompatible technology called CDMA. CDMA coverage is very strong in the United States, particularly in rural areas, but GSM service has a larger global footprint and GSM phones use the convenient SIM cards. As a result, GSM is better for someone who travels abroad frequently and likes to swap phones. The Samsung Have is so simple, it doesn&39't even have a camera.Next, you'll need to think about which service plan is right for you. If you're going with a traditional monthly plan, you'll have quite a few options available. Many plans are based around your allotment of anytime minutes, which are for calls placed during peak periods (typically run Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.). As a general rule, the more anytime minutes you have, the more expensive your plan. Alternatively, most carriers now offer unlimited plans that let you use as many minutes as you want. These plans will be the priciest, so consider your budget wisely.Other options to consider are shared or family plans, which allow you to share your monthly airtime allowance with additional lines for family members and the aforementioned prepaid phones, for which you pay for an allotted amount of service up front. When you've used all of your minutes, you have the opportunity to buy more service. And like we said earlier, prepaid plans don't require you to sign a contract. In addition to the bullet points we mentioned in the previous section, we'd advise you to think about the following before signing on any dotted line: With a keyboard, lots of messaging options, a camera, and a media player, the LG Octane is a great feature phone.(Credit:Josh P. Miller/CNET)Ask about the carrier's grace period for trying a service. Typically lasting a month, a grace period will allow you to return the phone if you're unsatisfied with the service. You will have pay for the calls you made during that time, but you won't be subject to additional fees.Know how many minutes you have (both peak and off peak) and when off-peak hours begin and end. In addition, know where you can track your usage.Be aware of all extra fees (activation, international calling, overtime, 411, and so on). Also, remember that taxes will increase the cost of your monthly bill.If you're going to use text messaging or multimedia messaging on a regular basis, it's best to get a message bundle or a data plan. Otherwise, you'll be charged on a per-use basis. For e-mail or Web browsing, a data plan is a must, and most carriers now require them when using a smartphone. If you're a parent purchasing a phone for a teenager or a younger child, you may want to consider limiting features, such as picture messaging, data use, and downloads. Some carriers even offer Web-based programs where you can track your child's location when they're using their phone. And on the other end of the age scale, some carriers offer handsets designed for senior users. Ask your carrier for more information.Get only what you need. Don't be pressured into purchasing more services if you won't use them. And if you can't get direct answers to your questions, go somewhere else.Carriers now offer a variety of free calling minutes to a select group of phone numbers. These can include calls to other cell phones on the same carrier, calls to cell phones on any carrier, or calls to a select set of phone numbers--even landlines. Check your carrier for specifics. You can buy at a carrier's retail store or Web site, but also you should check third-party retailers like Radio Shack and Best Buy. Going this route can offer a couple of advantages. Not only may prices be different, but you might find alternative models not directly sold by a carrier. Just make sure your carrier will support the phone you want. Also, though third-party retail stores aren't owned by a carrier, they can partner with providers to offer the activations services and rebates. If you're prone to losing your phone, consider an extended warranty in case your handset is lost, stolen, or damaged. Some carriers also offer roadside assistance services in case you need help while driving. The T-Mobile G2 is a full-fledged smartphone with just about every feature you&39'd want. It&39's powered by the Andorid operating system.(Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)Picking a phoneMany shoppers will have a specific phone in mind when leaving for the store. But if you still need to decide, the choice need not be as daunting as it might sound. It helps to break it down into a few simple points, which is what we've done here: Design: Most handsets are either flip phones or candy bar models, though swivel and slider models exist as well. Each design has its advantages and disadvantages, so decide which is best for you. Also, see how the phone feels in your hand. Is it comfortable to hold You might want a rugged phone with a durable shell if you work outside, for example.Style: You're going to be carrying this thing around all the time, so consider whether you just like how it looks. It's all subjective here.Display: Is it big and bright enough for you Can you read the text without straining And if it's a touch screen, is the interface quick and responsiveButtons and controls: Think about their size and placement Are they big enough, and how do they feel beneath your finger Also, are they easy to use If you're a frequent messenger or e-mailer, try a phone with a full keyboard. Some handsets have physical keyboards and others use a "virtual" keyboard on the touch screen. If you don't know which you prefer, try them both out.Menus: Take a dive into the menus. Can you understand themFeatures:The list is immense, but as with a calling plan, get only what you need. If you just want to make calls and use the phone for emergencies, a basic model--quite a few still exist--may be your best bet. If you're more geared toward messaging and some media use, perhaps you'd enjoy a feature phone. And if you want to download apps, access multiple e-mail accounts, use a full music player, get PDA features, browse the wireless Web, and download apps, then go with a smartphone.Operating system: If you're looking for a smartphone, the operating system will be a huge decision factor. Palm WebOS, Symbian, RIM BlackBerry, Apple iOS, Google Android, and Windows Phone 7 operating systems each have their unique characteristics. Our Cell phone product finder offers more information.Call performance: Make a call to a friend to experience the audio quality. If they don't have working display phones in a store, ask a sales rep to use one. If they don't have them, go somewhere else. But even before you leave the house, CNET now includes audio samples in our cell phone reviews.Data and media performance: Check out the Web browser to see how fast it loads. Speeds will vary by the handset and the quality of your carrier's data network. Music quality and camera quality are points to consider as well. You can evaluate photos from many current phones in CNET's camera phone image gallery.Battery life: Smartphones and handsets with large touch screens will have less battery life than simpler models. You can check a manufacturer's rated battery life before buying, but real-world use may differ so check out CNET's reviews and our battery life charts for actual tested times.Other optionsIf you have a GSM carrier, you also might consider buying an unlocked phone, which are available only from third-party retailers. Unlocked phones differ from locked phones in that they have no settings that tie them to one operator. As such, you can change carriers simply by changing the phone's SIM card, which can be an attractive option for international travelers. Just keep in mind that if you buy an unlocked phone, you won't be eligible for any carrier-sponsored rebates. For stocking suffers you can choose from a variety of accessories like Bluetooth headsets, cases, wired headsets, belt clips, and screen protectors. Whatever you buy, just makes sure it's compatible with your chosen phone.

0 Vote(s)

Here at VentureBeat we receive a considerable number of bad pitches, both from PR firmsand from entrepreneurs themselves. To make life more tolerable for everyone, we have decided to provide some tips on how to ensure that your pitch is not one of them. Let&'s start with some typical examples of the bad pitch. The boring pitchIn most cases nobody cares that your company has a new CFO or has signed a partnership with another company nobody has heard of. At a minimum, you need to tell us why this news is significant. Better still consider more carefully what you decide to publicize and if it&'s really of interest to anyone outside your company. An interesting piece of news may get lost in your deluge of press releases. The rocket scientist pitchTech journalists are rarely experts in all areas of technology (or sometimes in any areas). If you send a pitch full of technical language about ultracapacitors, sodium silicide or hybrid TDM we may simply have no idea what you are talking about. Assume that we know nothing and first explain the basics of the technology and why it&'s important in order to set the context for your news. The never-ending pitchEntrepreneurs promoting their own companies are particularly prone to this one. Starting a company is a difficult and all-consuming business so it&'s not surprising that you want to tell us, in excruciating detail, how wonderful your product is and how much effort went into building it. The problem is if we if we are not immediately hooked after the first sentence, wewill already have hit delete. The buzzword bingo pitchPRs are more likely than entrepreneurs to indulge in the buzzword bingo pitch. If your pitch contains the words &''game-changing&'', &''disruptive&'', &''paradigm-shift&'' or &''innovative&'' you are guilty as charged. Assume that all pitches contain these words so if you want to stand out try to avoid them. The world of the tech journalist must seem like a mysterious one to the outsider. How to attract the attention of these ficklecreatures Having catalogued the many ways of doing a bad pitch, here are some pointers on how the tech journalist&'s mind works and how to pitch accordingly.Know your journalist(s)One of the easiest ways for your pitch to get attention is if you know the journalist personally or have dealt with him before. That&'s just human nature. We are always more likely to pay attention to pitches from people we know over those we don&'t.Mark Hendrickson&'s post on how to pitch to a tech blogger makes the excellent suggestion of building up a relationship with your target journalist well before you pitch to him, e.g. by commenting on or linking to his posts.Assuming that you are cold pitching, do some research. Don&'t pitcha storyon games to a journalist who doesn&'t cover games. Familiarize yourself with your target journalist&'s work. &''I enjoyed your article on x.. so thought you might be interested in y&'' is always a good tactic. People enjoy flattery even when they don&'t believe it.Be clear about the priorities of your target publication. Some sites prioritize being first to break a story above all else. Others are more interested in deep technical detail or analysis in addition to raw news.Individual journalists or publications will often have a preferred contact method. For VentureBeat, mail pitches to tips@venturebeat.com.Tell us what we want to know, quicklyThere are a few basic things we need to know. Make your subject line clear and try to cover these points in a paragraph or two.Be honest If you have already been covered in another publication, tell us, and then explain why we should still cover you in spite of this. If your news is embargoed for a specific time, tell us. There&'s no reason why we should have to drag that information out of you. We will probably also want to know if you are pitching to other publications at the same time. Deception may help get you coverage once but you won&'t get it second time. Build a long-term relationship, not a one night stand.Make it easy for usWe are lazy. Minimize our workload by supplying a press pack with some nice photos orinfographics. Write your press release or report so well that we can just cut and paste parts of it (yes, we do this sometimes). Another good tactic is a video such asZenRoboticshilariously off the wall &''movie trailer&''.Make your pitch more than an adSome of my favourite pitches tell a story which is of interest to a wider audience than the potential customers of, or investors in, your company. Good examples areSaplo&'stext analysis of happiness orAVG&'s study on kids and technology. A pitch which is playful and piquant will always attract attention.Tech journalists are like restaurant critics. We write about magical technology and fascinating people every day. Our palates may become jaded. Surprise and delight us and you are half way there.Mail your pitches to tips@venturebeat.com (received by all VB writers).Next Story: Yobongo launches chat app &8212' a tech fix for shy nerds Previous Story: The great white iPhone 4 hunt to end soonPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Coverage, media, pitch, press Tags: Coverage, media, pitch, pressCiara Byrne is a full time techie and part-time writer.
As VentureBeat suggested on Thursday, the entry of new shares onto the market today has caused Tesla&'s stock to drop. The stock is trading down 16 percent today now that the 180-day post-IPO lockup period has ended and insiders are free to sell their shares. The stock istrading at $25.30, down 16 percent from its Thursday close of $30.09. CapitalOne Southcoast todayplaced a &''sell&'' rating on the stock. The Silicon Valley electric car company&'s stock took an 8 percent tumble Thursday when Capstone analyst Carter Driscoll downgraded Tesla shares to a &''sell&'' with a price target of $22.Last week, Morgan Stanley estimated that the lockup&'s end would triple the amount of shares publicly available for trade on the market. Today, traders have already traded 5.8 million shares &8212' six times the stock&'s 50-day average daily volume of 902,532.Brian D. Pacampara of The Motley Fool echoed Driscoll in pointing out that Tesla faces tough competition from major automakers:&''I wouldn&'t be so quick to pounce on today&'s plunge. Double-digit declines over imagined insider dumping aren&'t worth getting worked up about, but when you consider that Tesla lacks any real scale to compete against green-focused giantsFordand Nissan, I knowI&'dbe selling at the first opportunity. With skepticism steadily growing on Wall Street about just how fast Tesla will be able to grow, Mr. Market might not be ready to support the flood of new shares.&''It&'s not like Mr. Market didn&'t have warning: 180-day lockups are standard parts of new public stock listings. In a10-Q SEC filing, Tesla disclosed that 75 million shares will be released by the lockup and that it currently has 93.25 million outstanding shares, Forbes noted. In the filing, the company anticipated the drop, too. The company acknowledged the potential price drop on Dec. 27, and that its stock price would be volatile:&''The stock market in general, and the market for technology companies in particular, has experienced extreme price and volume fluctuations that have often been unrelated or disproportionate to the operating performance of those companies. Broad market and industry factors may seriously affect the market price of companiesa4a4 stock, including ours, regardless of actual operating performance.&''That the stock can be unpredictable is true. Tesla&' stock has had a high of $36.42 and low of $14.98. Despite posting losses in the third quarter, the stock closed at a record $33. And its blockbuster IPO a4" a $17 June offering thatjumped 40.5 percent in the first day of trading a4"happened in the midst of a lackluster cleantech IPO season. And in a practically unheard-of aberration, the IPO bucked market trends with a successful debutthe same day the Nasdaq and S&amp'P had their worst days of the year.As we noted Thursday, there has been a tremendous amount of short interest on the stock, with buyers looking to bet against the stock outnumbering sellers six to one as of Nov. 30.Previous Story: Another strike against Google TV Logitech temporarily halting Revue productionPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: electric cars, electric vehiclesCompanies: CapitalOne Southcoast, Capstone, TeslaPeople: Carter Driscoll Tags: electric cars, electric vehiclesCompanies: CapitalOne Southcoast, Capstone, TeslaPeople: Carter DriscollIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
It looks like it&'s easy enough toforget about 24 hours of downtime.Lite blogging service Tumblr has raised $30 million in a recent round of funding that includes the likes of Sequoia Capital, according to a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filingconfirms some earlier rumors buzzing around that Sequoia was dropping some serious cash into the casual blogging service.Tumblr, despite having some growing pains and seeing frequent outages, has flown past other casual blogging services like Posterous. The site lets users create their own blogs from an existing library of templates and hosts those blogs for free.Activity on the network of Tumblr blogs skyrocketed over the first half of the year and reached about 1.7 billion page views in the month of August.Tumblr attracted around 42 million monthly visits to its hosted blog network globally (17 million of which come from the U.S.), while Posterous averages only around 7 million monthly visits on its hosted blogs, according to data from Quantcast. But Tumblr, which employs about 16 people, has been unable to provide service for hours at a time to its users because of high traffic. The site recently opened up an office in New York, and founder David Karp (pictured) said he plans to expand the team to 20 people.TheNew York, N.Y.-based company raisedmore than $10 million by April, with three rounds of funding led byUnion Square Ventures andSpark Capital. Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital participated in the most recent round as well. That brings Tumblr&'s total funding up to around $40.2 million a4" hopefully that&'s enough to keep the site from going down for another day.Next Story: White Collar Brawler delivers Web TV with a literal punch Previous Story: Apple secures future iPhone displays, joins Sharp for $1.2B LCD expansionPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: blogging, casual blogging, lite bloggingCompanies: Posterous, Tumblr Tags: blogging, casual blogging, lite bloggingCompanies: Posterous, TumblrMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
In the footsteps of Google, which posts a yearly zeitgeist of the most searched terms, Facebook and Twitter have decided to unpack some of their trends of the year from tweets and status updates. To measure trends in Facebook&'s status updates, data scientist Lars Backstrom looked at words or phrases in terms of the ones that grew most in status updates compared to last year. And the result &''Highs and lows of world events that started a global conversation, new uses of language online, and the sharing of popular culture between friends,&'' reveals Backstrom. In similar fashion, Twitterposted its own top ten trends. The complete trend lists, including breakdowns of categories, can be foundhere. As a comparison, both trend lists match up particularly well. The FIFA World Cup, Inception, Haiti earthquake, iPad, and Justin Bieber, seem to have found their way onto both. Missing surprisingly from Facebook&'s list are the Oil Spill and Pulpo Paul the Octopus, which may be due to the fact that they were largely termed in 2010 itself, and the equally surprising topper was &''HMU&'' &8212' short-hand acronym for &''hit me up.&''Worth noting is that while Facebook&'s list measured trends relative to their weight in 2009, Twitter&'s looked at 2010 alone. Also,Twitter maintains a trending list visible to all its users, which may more or less perpetuate the trends themselves. In contrast, Facebook&'s status updates are mostly implicit and spread naturally from user to user.Previous Story: Nook Color to become a real Android tablet with January updatePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 2010, data analysis, haiti, iPad, status updates, Trends, tweets, World Cup, zeitgeistCompanies: Facebook, TwitterPeople: Justin Bieber Tags: 2010, data analysis, haiti, iPad, status updates, Trends, tweets, World Cup, zeitgeistCompanies: Facebook, TwitterPeople: Justin BieberSid Yadav is a contributor to VentureBeat.
In a characteristically provocative op-ed in last Fridaya4a4s Wall Street Journal, Silicon Valley bomb thrower Andy Kessler said a4Ait&'s time to close the Federal Communications Commission.a4 Directly reacting to last weeka4a4s speech by FCC chairman Julius Genachowski which attempted to map out a compromise on the network neutrality issue, Kessler argued that any attempt to regulate the web will only stifle technological and business innovation. The irrepressible Kessler a4" whose provocative new book next year is entitled Eat People &8211' didna4a4t disappoint when I caught up with him on Skype yesterday. Describing the FCC as like a4Arotting cottage cheese in your fridge,&'' Kessler argued that the regulatory body is undermining the competitiveness of the American economy and should be gotten rid of immediately. But not everyone sees the world in such starkly Manichaean terms as Kessler. Richard Bennett a4" the distinguished broadband network architect and a fellow at the Information Technology and Information Foundation (ITIF) &8211' is both radically more nuanced and optimistic than Kessler about the value of the FCC and its latest network neutrality initiative. Indeed, when I skyped Bennett yesterday, he expressed hope that chairman Genachowskia4a4s compromise solution announced last week would eventually lead to a solution to the intractable network neutrality problem. This is the first part of a network neutrality double-header. Tomorrow, I talk to Gigi Sohn, Public Knowledgea4a4s Founder/CEO and Silicon Valley based author and commentator Larry Downes about Julius Genachowskia4a4s attempt to resolve the network neutrality dispute. However dry or obscure this issue sometimes appears, ita4a4s actually critical not only to the future of the Internet but also a4" as Andy Kessler reminds us &8211' to the overall competitiveness of the American economy.Andy Kessler: Get Rid of the FCCRichard Bennett: Keep the FCCCrunchBase InformationAndy KesslerRichard BennettInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

In the latest blow to Google&'s ever-expanding online ambitions, the European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, has opened an antitrust investigation into Google&'s practices in online advertising. According to allegations made by Microsoft&'s German subsidiary Ciao.de, British price comparison site Foundem, and French legal search specialist Ejustice, Google has discriminated against competitors by placing their links lower in search results than its own services, thus abusing its dominant position in online search.Google has allegedly lowered the ranking of competitive vertical search sites &8212' mostly price comparison sites &8212' in favor of its own in the main body of search results as they appear on a Google search results page. These results are &''natural&'', or unpaid search results as opposed to the paid ads which appear on the top and the right-hand side of the page.Vertical search sites specialize in a specific kind of search, like travel, health, or shopping. Some appear designed to game Google&'s algorithms and benefit from free traffic from the Web search engine rather than providing a genuine service to users, while others offer a legitimately helpful service. The EC is also looking into claims that Google has manipulated its internal a4Aquality scorea4, which determines the amount of money an advertiser has to pay for an ad that appears on Google&'s search results page. And finally, the Commission is investigating whether or not Google is also trying to stop websites from accepting rival ads, making the company sound like quite the online bully. While the EC has opened an investigation into the matter, it doesn&'t mean there is proof of any wrongdoing on Google&'s part&8211'yet. The EC states simply that it will a4Aconduct an in-depth investigation of the case as a matter of priority.a4According to various outlets such as the BBC, BusinessWeek, and the New York Times, Google responded with a statement saying that it has a4Aworked hard to do the right thing by our users and our industry.a4 Google said it has marked ads clearly and has allowed advertisers export their data from its service to other services easily. Google also said there is always a4Aroom for improvementa4, and the company will be working with the commission to a4Aaddress any concerns.a4There is no legal deadline for the investigation, meaning that it is likely to take months, if not years for the EC to reach a conclusion in what will be a highly complex case. The EU has a history of taking on giant companies before, hitting Microsoft with a fine of 497 million euros, or $794 million, in March 2004 over antitrust issues, and, more recently, the regulator fined Intel 1.08 billion euros, or $1.38 billion. It is apparent that the EU is not a pushover when dealing with multinational companies and therefore this could mean trouble for Google, should the company be found to be using anti-competitive practices.[Photo credit: Carlos Luna]Next Story: Could Mickey Mouse be the next video game star Previous Story: Correcting the course of your companya4a4s culturePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: antitrust, EU, European Commission, European Union, GoogleCompanies: Ciao.de, Ejustice, Foundem, Google, Microsoft Tags: antitrust, EU, European Commission, European Union, GoogleCompanies: Ciao.de, Ejustice, Foundem, Google, MicrosoftVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
Scvngr, the check-in application that asks users to complete activity challenges, just announced a strategic partnership with major drink distributor Coca Cola. The two have joined forces to give users who check-in to certain Simon Malls across United States the opportunity to earn points and rewards like gift cards and other Coke-branded merchandise.Starting Friday, November 26, Scvngr users who check-in at one of the malls will be prompted to complete the new Coke Secret Formula Challenges. Some of the challenges include tasks like having a friend snap a photo of you high-fiving a fellow mall patron (bonus points if your target is drinking a Coke) or snapping a photo of hiding locations throughout the mall (maybe that&'s where the Coke Secret Formula is hidden). The Scvngr partnership couldn&'t come at a more perfect time. Just hours ago, Foursqaure announced a partnership and new loyalty program pilot with Safeway and PepsiCo. The pilot will allow PepsiCo to engage Safeway loyalty card users at any Vons, a grocery store chain owned by Safeway. In a recent interview with chief executive and founder Seth Priebatsch, he argued that the future of location-based services lies in storytelling and experiences, not just check ins. The partnership with Coca Cola may be another step for Scvngr in that direction.Boston-based Scvngr, founded in 2008, has secured $4.8 million in funding and just recently reached more than 500,000 users.Next Story: A tour inside Silicon Valley&'s newest (freezing cold) secret data center Previous Story: Dell: The public cloud doesn&'t scare us!PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: challeneges, check-ins, location, location based services, location-based, partnerships, points, rewardsCompanies: Cocal Cola, Foursquare, Pepsi, Safeway, Scvngr Tags: challeneges, check-ins, location, location based services, location-based, partnerships, points, rewardsCompanies: Cocal Cola, Foursquare, Pepsi, Safeway, ScvngrCody Barbierri is a social and digital media consultant.
