A BitTorrent file-sharing case could soon have more than 23,000 defendants.Back in March, Judge Robert Wilkins of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia allowed Nu Image, a production company and the plaintiff in the case against "Does 1 to 6,500," to start seeking out contact information, including full name and address, related to IP addresses it had already collected. Those IP addresses, Nu Image said at the time, were "Doe Defendants" who had allegedly pirated copies of last year's "The Expendables" using the BitTorrent protocol. Sylvester Stallone directed and starred in the film' LA-based Nu Image was involved in its production.Last week, Nu Image filed another court document that included more than 23,000 IP addresses of people who allegedly pirated the film. If folks who use those IP addresses are sued as part of the case, it could become the biggest BitTorrent-related lawsuit thus far. This case, filed earlier this year, is one of many that have been or are currently under way against alleged copyright infringers across the U.S. For example, Lime Wire, a former go-to place for file sharers, was finally taken down last year after a protracted court battle with the Recording Industry Association of America. Currently, a jury is mulling how much Lime Wire founder Mark Gorton will pay in damages. The jury is allowed to level a fine of $7 million to $1.4 billion. But whether Nu Image will be allowed to use the personal information it gathers from the thousands of IP addresses it has collected is up for debate. Just last week, U.S. District Court Judge Harold Baker ruled in a separate case that IP addresses cannot adequately identify an individual.Baker pointed out that a person can easily use another individual's Internet connection to engage in illegal activity. His point is well-taken. Last month, federal agents entered a Buffalo, N.Y., man's home, accused him of downloading child pornography, and seized his computers. Three days later, they returned his equipment and acknowledged that he was, in fact, innocent. A 25-year-old neighbor was arrested soon thereafter for allegedly using the innocent man's Wi-Fi to download child pornography.Regardless, Nu Image is forging ahead. According to Wired, which first reported the story, more than 23,000 alleged file sharers will "soon" be notified that they are being sued for allegedly downloading copies of "The Expendables."The plaintiff's attorney did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

This was the message displayed after U.S. authorities seized the domains of the online poker sites. Several founders of the three largest Internet poker companies doing business in the U.S. have been arrested as part of an indictment that includes charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and other online gambling-related offenses, the U.S. Attorney's office said today. The three offshore companies--PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker--are accused of circumventing a 2006 U.S. law that prohibits financial institutions from handling transactions for online gambling sites. Prosecutors say they allegedly tricked U.S. banks and credit card issuers into processing billions of dollars in transactions that appeared to be legitimate sales on hundreds of fake online retail sites purportedly selling jewelry and golf balls. One-third of the money allegedly went directly to the poker companies as revenue through a fee charged to players on each poker hand played, according to the indictment, which was unsealed today in U.S. District Court in New York. After U.S. banks and financial institutions detected fraudulent bank accounts and shut them down, the defendants allegedly paid a few small, financially troubled banks money as investments in return for processing the payments, according to the indictment. The deals allegedly included a $10 million investment in a private Utah bank that gave the poker companies more than a 30 percent ownership stake, prosecutors said. The indictment and civil lawsuit seek at least $3 billion in money laundering penalties and forfeiture from the defendants. The federal court issued a restraining order on about 76 bank accounts in 14 countries and seized five Internet domain names allegedly used for operating the illegal games. Two of the 11 defendants were arrested this morning in Utah and Nevada and authorities are looking for the others, some who may be in other countries, authorities said. Restraining orders were issued against more than 75 bank accounts allegedly used by the defendants and their payment processors. Five Internet domain names used to host the games were seized by federal authorities. Representatives from the poker companies named in the indictment could not be reached for comment. The Web sites displayed messages saying "This domain has been seized by the FBI pursuant to an arrest warrant." "These defendants concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme, alternately tricking some U.S. banks and effectively bribing others to assure the continued flow of billions in illegal gambling profits. Moreover, as we allege, in their zeal to circumvent the gambling laws, the defendants also engaged in massive money laundering and bank fraud," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. Foreign firms that choose to operate in the United States are not free to flout the laws they don't like simply because they can't bear to be parted from their profits." Updated 4:50 p.m. PTto clarify that the law prohibits financial institutions from conducting transactions for online gambling sites.

0 Vote(s)

Lenovo is expected to announce a new model tomorrow in its highly regarded ThinkPad X series of ultraportable laptops that offers a USB 3.0 port, a uniquely sized 12.5-inch screen, and long battery life, as CNET reported earlier today. The X220 appears to be a variation on the previously announced Lenovo IdeaPad U260 theme. That IdeaPad, like the ThinkPad X220, is 3 pounds and offers a 1366x768 resolution 12.5-inch screen. But there are some significant differences, the most salient being the ThinkPad's use of dual-core Core i7, i5, and i3 Sandy Bridge processors and a USB 3.0 port option. USB 3.0 delivers data transfer speeds "up to 10 times that of USB 2.0," according to Lenovo. Other differences include better battery life, the option for Intel 80GB and 160GB solid-state drives, and configurations with built-in 3G. The ThinkPad X220 has a uniquely sized 12.5-inch screen, packs Sandy Bridge processors, and a USB 3.0 port in one model.(Credit:Lenovo)Let's take a closer look at the Sandy Bridge processors, as they likely presage future versions of the MacBook Air and other ultraportables from top-tier vendors. The top-line X220 comes with the 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 2620M processor and a USB 3.0 port. Other models use Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i3 chips, including the i5-2540M (2.5GHz), the i5-2410M(2.3GHz), and i3-2310M (2.1GHz). Lenovo's claims for battery life are stunning. With a standard 9-cell battery, the X220 boasts up to 15 hours battery life. This jumps to up to 24 hours by adding a ThinkPad Battery 19+ external battery, according to Lenovo documentation. An "Instant Resume" function is also standard. This maintains wireless connections during sleep mode for up to 99 minutes, "eliminating the need to login and reconnect between meetings," said Lenovo. Other features include an SD card slot, an Express Card slot, Display Port connector, and Intel integrated HD graphics. The ThinkPad X220 will be available starting in April. Pricing starts at $899.

0 Vote(s)

Best Buy today launched a buy-back program designed to quash the fear of technology obsolescence. In the process, tech buyers can find a way to repurpose or recycle their electronic gadgets. When Best Buy customers purchase the service with their products, they can return their product and get paid for a fraction of its purchase price, depending on how long the consumer had it. If it doesn't have any resale value, the PC, TV, or smartphone will be either stripped down for parts or recycled in the U.S., as part of Best Buy's existing programs, said George Sherman, the senior vice president of services at the company. The cost of the buy-back program for laptops, Netbooks, ortablets is $69.99. For smartphones that cost less than $350, it's $39.99, and $59.99 for smartphones that cost more than $350, Sherman said. Best Buy could extend the program to game machines or other electronics, depending on consumer reaction, he saidA customer can get up to 50 percent of the purchase price within six months, up to 40 percent for six to 12 months, up to 30 percent for one year to 18 months, and up to 20 percent for 18 months to two years. For TVs, people have up to four years to get 10 percent. The primary goal of the buy-back program is to encourage consumers, particularly early technology adopters, to spend on new products rather than wait, Sherman said. But having another channel to return electronics goods could increase used product take-back rates. Best Buy projects that it will increase the number of electronics it takes back in stores by about 15 percent to 160 million pounds in this fiscal year, Sherman said.

0 Vote(s)

Google gave all of its employees raises earlier this week, but it saved the best raises for its senior management team. Four of Google's seven named executive officers--Patrick Pichette, Nikesh Arora, Alan Eustace, and Jonathan Rosenberg--are getting 30 percent raises for 2011, bringing each of their base salaries to $650,000 from $500,000, Google announced in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission late Friday. Earlier in the week, Google gave everybody else a 10 percent raise, along with a $1,000 bonus, as it tries to hang on to employees amid a talent war in Silicon Valley. Those executives are also getting hefty restricted-stock awards, with Pichette and Arora receiving $20 million, Eustace getting $10 million, and Rosenberg getting $5 million in grants and options. The numbers are interesting, considering that TechCrunch reported this week that a single Google "staff engineer" was given a restricted-stock award of $3.5 million as an incentive to remain with the search company and pass up an offer from Facebook. The Google ruling triumvirate--CEO Eric Schmidt, and co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page--will continue to accept a salary of $1 and did not take any additional stock rewards. Not that they really need it: together, the three control more than half of Google's outstanding stock, with Brin and Page supplementing their incomes this year by selling off shares in a diversification strategy.

0 Vote(s)

If you had asked me earlier this year which company would introduce a dual-core phone first, I certainly wouldn&'t have guessed LG. But now that is indeed what we&'re getting: The Korean company today launched the Android-powered Optimus 2X, the first phone ever to sport a dual-core processor. The phone is a follow-up to LG&'s successful low-end Optimus One phones. The 2X features Nvidia&'s dual-core Tegra 2 processor running at 1 gigahertz, which promises to bring more horsepower to your phone than any single-core processor can provide. In a recent benchmark by Engadget, the 2X unsurprisingly blew past the Nexus One and Droid X in performance. It packs a 4-inch display, 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video conferencing. The phone will ship with Android 2.2, but LG says that it will be upgradeable to the newer 2.3 release. Notably, it can record 1080p high-definition video (most phones today are limited to 720p HD recording).I&'m personally not too keen on 1080p video recording on cellphones (even though it&'s coming from other manufacturers like Sony Ericsson). Cellphone camera sensors and lenses aren&'t sophisticated enough to take advantage of the added resolution in 1080p files, plus storage space is still something that needs to be conserved. The Optimus 2X, for example, packs 8 gigabytes of on-board storage, and you can also add extra storage up to 32 gigabytes. That&'s not a lot of space for 1080p video, a few minutes of which could take up a significant chunk of space. Considering that the difference between professionally made 720p and 1080p HD video is still tough to discern on TV screens under 50 inches, putting 1080p recording on phones just seems like overkill. The Optimus 2X also packs in a 1,500mAh battery, which is on-par with other high-powered Android smartphones. It&'s unclear how that battery will fair with the 2X&'s more power-hungry dual-core processor.LG says the Optimus 2X will land in Korea next month, and it will hit countries in Europe and Asia afterward &8212' markets where the company is likely more comfortable launching major products. There&'s no word yet on when it will be available in the US.Via EngadgetNext Story: Chumby Industries launches a web discovery app on Android devices Previous Story: Facebook gets serious about face recognitionPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, dual-core, Optimus, Optimus 2X, smartphones, Tegra 2Companies: Google, Lg, Nvidia Tags: Android, dual-core, Optimus, Optimus 2X, smartphones, Tegra 2Companies: Google, Lg, NvidiaDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Bridgelux, a manufacturer of LED lighting technology, has raised almost $21 million in its latest round of funding, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission today. The company specializes in making commercial lighting using light-emitting diodes (LEDs). That&'s the same technology that powers back-lighting for computer screens and televisions, but not traditional light sources like lamps and light fixtures. That&'s because the technology is pretty expensive, though much more energy-efficient than traditional bulbs.Bridgelux earlier released a LED-powered light source that cost $20, down from the typical cost of around $50 for LED light sources. That&'s still quite a bit higher than traditional incandescent light bulbs, though, which cost anywhere from $2 to $10 per bulb.To quell some concerns about how stable the technology is, Bridgelux decided to offer a five-year warranty on all of its light fixtures late last year, following a trend started by companies like SolarBridge and SolFocus to pick up some new customers that weren&'t quite convinced the technology was stable enough for every day consumers. It looks like the most recent round was led by existing investors Vantage Point Venture Partners and venture capital firm DCM, according to the filing. Bridgelux has 138 employees and is based in Livermore, Calif. The company closed a funding round worth around $34 million around the same time last year. The company is also backed by Chrysalix Energy and El Dorado ventures.Next Story: Top reasons to attend DEMO Spring 2011 Previous Story: What&'s good for GM is &8230' good for the environmentPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: LED LightingCompanies: BridgeLux Tags: LED LightingCompanies: BridgeLuxMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Today at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams sat down with host John Battelle. Battelle asked Williams about Twitter&'s relationship with Facebook. As you might expect, it&'s complicated, according to Williams.Battelle asked if Twitter was open to doing more integration with Facebook. &''Ia4sthink you&'d have to ask Mark [Zuckerberg] that. But you missed your opportunity,&'' Williams joked (Zuckerberg was interviewed on stage yesterday). Williams noted that Battelle also didn&'t ask Zuckerberg why they blocked Twitter&'s contact integration.Williams says that he&'d like Twitter users to be able to tap into Facebook to make their experience better. And he said he understands their position in that they see their social graph as their core asset. But he clearly doesn&'t think it&'s the right idea to block them. Facebook&'s reason is that they like to have formal relationships in place for deals with large companies. It&'s the same reason they blocked Apple&'s Ping service.&''We&'re talking to them often&''to see if there&'s a way to work together,&'' Williams said of Twitter. &''So far, neither side has figured out a way to do that other than what we&'re already doing,&'' he continued.Yep.
I know, I know. The indications were that the next version of Android, 2.3, was supposed to be out already. It has been nearly a week since an OHA member tweeted that the Nexus One would be getting the Gingerbread OTA update in &''the next few days&''. So far, nothing. But Google is doing their best to keep whetting everyones&' appetite.Yesterday, the search giant sent out a tweet from their mobile account (yes, the one they paid to promote on Twitter two days ago). The tweet read, &''Our cafes are baking something sweet&'', and contained a link to a TwitPic of dozens of gingerbread Android cookies. Cute Google, cute. It&'s been three weeks since Google put the giant Gingerbread Man on their lawn.By the way, the metadata on the picture shows that it was taken with a Nexus One (and not the mythical a4" and delayed a4" Nexus S). No word on if it was powered by Gingerbread.Perhaps Google is just timing the launch of Gingerbread to take some of the wind out of Facebook&'s sails.
