Maxwell Technologies already makes an array of ultracapacitors used to aid in powering everything from cars to camera flashes.(Credit:Maxwell Technologies)Maxwell Technologies has won a $1.7 million contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop an ultracapacity energy-storage device for powering portable electronics for the military, the company announced today.Under the DARPA contract, Maxwell will work with researchers from the University of Massachusetts and the U.S. Navy to create a hybrid ultracap, a device that can act as a "capacity module, advanced battery pack and power management electronics" tool yet be light and small enough to be easily transported by soldiers in the field. The device also must be extremely long-lasting, enabling military personnel to run all of their electronics equipment off one energy source during an extended mission."To ensure that field military personnel are energy self-sufficient during extended missions, they typically carry primary and spare batteries weighing more than 60 pounds to power a growing assortment of portable electronic equipment," Maxwell said in a statement.Maxwell Technologies&39' PC10 series of ultracapacitors are used in portable electronics for small power boosts.(Credit:Maxwell Technologies)Maxwell already makes large-scale ultracapaciters used in vehicles with stop-start technology. Carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen, for example, has begun using them as a way to offer "fail-safe" restarting in its stop-start vehicles. The ultracapacitors have greater lifecycles than batteries and can be completely recharged in minutes. Maxwell's Boostcap ultracapaciter is used in buses and trams, for example, to capture power during regenerative breaking and then act as a power booster during acceleration. Maxwell also makes the PC10, a small capacitor used with batteries for devices like digital cameras and tabletop credit-card readers.Hybrid ultracap is a term coined by researchers and companies in recent years that refers to a single energy-storage device that uses both an ultracapaciter and batteries to store and quickly distribute energy to electronic devices. Hybrid ultracaps could be considered the Toughbook-equivalent of battery packs as they can be made smaller than typical battery packs and operate under more extreme temperatures, while still offering the quick recharge and discharge capability of ultracapacitors. One of Maxwell's rivals, Ioxus, has announced it is developing a hybrid ultracap that combines ultracapacity with a lithium-ion battery that's roughly the size of a C cell battery. EnerG2 is also employing ultracapacitor technology to develop grid-storage devices.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft could be looking to give touch screens more of a tactile feel.A patent filed by the software giant in 2009 and published last week details a light-induced shape-memory polymer display screen. In a nutshell, that means a touch screen that has a real texture and tactile feedback to it, making people feel as if they're touching an actual object.Invented by Erez Kikin-Gil, the screen would be coated with polymers that could change or hold their shape when different wavelengths of ultraviolet light hit the pixels from underneath, according to an article in New Scientist. The screen could be set up to not only display images but also specific interfaces, such as a virtual keyboard, with users receiving tactile feedback from each key pressed. The technology will initially find its way onto large screens such as Microsoft's Surface, rather than in phones or tablets, according to the patent.

0 Vote(s)

Artist&39's rendering of Lincoln Financial Field once the green renovation is complete.(Credit:Philadelphia Eagles)The Philadelphia Eagles stadium will run on self-generated energy as of September 2011.The football franchise made the announcement today at a press conference Webcast from Lincoln Financial Field that was attended by Eagles owners Jeffrey and Christina Lurie, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell, and SolarBlue CEO Lee Maher. The Eagles franchise believes Lincoln Financial Field will be the first major stadium in the world to convert completely to self-generated energy. The team has partnered with renewable energy company SolarBlue, who is now "the official energy provider of the Philadelphia Eagles," according to the Eagles Web site.SolarBlue will install and operate the entire system, which will consist of 80 spiral small-wind turbines around the perimeter of the stadium roof, 2,500 solar panels on the stadium's facade and canopies, and a 7.6-megawatt dual-fuel co-generation plant adjacent to the stadium that will run on biodiesel fuel and natural gas, SolarBlue CEO Lee Maher announced. The split for energy generation will be 70/15/15, with 70 percent of the stadium's energy being generated by the biodiesel/natural gas co-generation plant, and solar and wind systems each producing 15 percent.Per the terms of the deal, SolarBlue will invest an estimated $30 million to convert the stadium into a self-generating facility. In exchange, the Eagles have signed a 20-year contract in which it will pay SolarBlue for the electricity at an agreed annual price. The Eagles estimate that the deal will save the franchise $60 million in energy costs over the next 20 years. Philadelphia Eagles owners Jeffrey and Christina Lurie sign &34'The Philadelphia Eagles Declaration of Energy Independence&34' during Thursday&39's press conference.(Credit:Philadelphia Eagles)After the 20-year mark, the Eagles will then be free to use its self-generated electricity and sell any excess back to the electric grid. It's estimated the stadium will generate approximately 1.039 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power about 26,000 homes, according to SolarBlue."On behalf of our entire organization in partnership with our energy supplier SolarBlue, and the support of our friends and fans, we are proud to make the major commitment to power Lincoln Financial Field with renewable energy and encourage other sports franchises to join us," said Jeffrey Lurie, Eagles co-owner and CEO."Philadelphia was the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Well, today we are making our own declaration of energy independence. We believe it's imperative to be able to develop scalable and economical renewable energy sourcing," said Lurie who, along with his wife, signed a giant prop Philadelphia Eagles Declaration of Energy Independence."It is most exciting to not only have the greenest city in America but also the greenest stadium in the world right here in Philadelphia. The Eagles have shown time and again their commitment to going green," said Mayor Nutter. While it's debatable exactly which city in the U.S. in the most green, Nutter has become known for his "Greenest City in America" campaign in Philadelphia, in which the city plans to be the greenest city in the U.S. by 2015.While the Philadelphia Eagles are the first NFL team to go completely self-generating, they are not the first team to incorporate green technology into their facilities. In September, the New York Jets announced they would install 3,000 solar panels at their training facility in New Jersey. And NFL fans may soon see changes at other stadiums as well."The leadership being demonstrated here, our other clubs are watching. I think they may follow suit because they want to be responsible and do the right things in their communities. I think this will initiate a movement, and hopefully we will see more of this around the NFL," said Goodell.Fans who sit in the nosebleed sections of the stadium need not worry that the wind turbines will interfere with their game enjoyment. Extensive testing was done at the stadium, and the spiral wind turbines chosen are quiet, and will not interfere with nearby bird wildlife, according to Eagles co-owner Christina Lurie. In conjunction with Thursday's announcement, the Eagles homepage featured a video of what Lincoln Financial Field will look like outfitted for self-generation, as well as several other "Go Green" programs sponsored by the team. A Go Green calculator, for example, lets fans determine how much energy they might save by changing some of their habits.

0 Vote(s)

I used to think that Android fanboys worked themselves into the biggest tizzy when you suggest their favorite device of the week may not be the absolute bee&'s knees. I was wrong. Flash fanboys are much worse. They&'re worse not only because they go absolutely ape-shit if you disrespect their platform, but also because at the end of the day at least Android fans have a leg to stand on. At least their object of love is ultimately pretty good and has a bright future. Flash Yeah&8230'Adobe&'s CTO paints a rosy picture of the platform. But that&'s his job. The reality is what many of us see with our own eyes: Flash is a massive pain point in our day to day computing. If it&'s not crashing our browsers left and right, it&'s causing our computers to cook our thighs (or worse). If it&'s not draining our batteries 33 percent faster, it&'s opening gaping security holes.Let&'s look at just the most recent headlines. Yesterday, Apple&nbsp'released the latest OS X update, 10.6.5. A huge portion of the update was dedicated to security updates. Of those, a full 42 percent were security patches&nbsp'related&nbsp'to Flash. &nbsp'Should anyone be surprised that Apple has decided to no longer bundle it with OS XMeanwhile, Flash is now fully baked into Google&'s Chrome browser. If you read the update notes or bug reports on the various channels, you&'ll see that a massive number are related to Flash. What about Flash on other devices It&'s the killer feature of the new Samsung Galaxy Tab, right Wrong. Even the most glowing reviews of the new tablet rip its Flash support.Meanwhile, on the smartphone side of things, Adobe just released an update for Flash for Android likely ahead of the 2.3 roll-out. Does it fix any of the performance issues Nope. I&'m using it right now. Playback is still jittery as hell.So you&'ll forgive me if when Kevin Lynch announces all these great-sounding things about Flash that are just around the corner, I&'m highly skeptical. How long have we been promised Flash on mobile devices 5 years It&'s still not where it needs to be. Hell, it&'s not where it needs to be on the desktop. The fact of the matter is that if everything was peachy keen in the state of Flash, Adobe wouldn&'t have anything to worry about. Apple could go on the offensive against them, but it wouldn&'t matter. Nothing would change. But things are changing. And Adobe is scared to death. But all of these reports across various sectors must be wrong. Flash is just great. People are screaming about how wonderful it is. It&'s a pure coincidence that they all happen to be Flash developers.[img via&nbsp'stock.ly]CrunchBase InformationAdobe FlashInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Back in October, we came across a mysterious site called Google Demo Slam a couple days before it actually launched. It turned out to be a fun site featuring demos of different Google products where you can watch two demos side by side and vote for the best one. Some of the demos are by Google engineers, but anyone can submit their own and vie to become a Google Demo Slam champ. Below are a few of the best demos on the site so far. The first one is four guys pretending to be Mount Rushmore and doing such a good job that they fool Google Goggles into identifying them as the real thing. The second shows two women using Google Translate to get their computer to order Indian food in Hindi. The third one demonstrates how to give yourself a haircut using Google Chat and two computers. And the fourth one recreates a road trip on Route 66 with Google Street View, a couple couches, and a projector. Some of these videos have already been viewed more than 100,000 times. It&'s amazing what a little game mechanics can do to get people to watch and create product demos for your company.Mount Rushmore (Google Goggles) Extra Spicy (Google Translate) Haircut (Google Video Chat) Road Trip (Google Street View)

0 Vote(s)

Apple was granted a set of patents earlier this week, but while those were practical, even prosaic in their content, this new one is simply baffling. I&'m thinking that the many talented engineers at that company are coming up with more ideas than Apple can actually execute, but are too cool to ignore.Today&'s &''grab bag&'' patent is for an autostereoscopic 3D display that tracks the user&'s position in space and adjusts the display accordingly. It&'s a monstrously complex way of doing things, but if you don&'t want to wear glasses, this is what you get.The invention involves a Kinect-esque motion and position sensor that would determine the position of the user &mdash' specifically, the position of his eyes. The display surface would be a &''programmable mirror&'' governed by a &''angularly-responsive reflective surface function.&'' As you can tell, it&'s rather a technical patent, and although I have my doubts about the precision of the motion and eye detection, the principle seems sound if such a display surface exists. My question is really more of a &''why Apple&'' I mean, I can hardly think of an application for this technology, interesting though it is, in any imaginable consumer tech of the next few years. Sure, the Kinect demonstrates some similar advanced functions, and 3D content is only going to increase and improve, but this system is extremely complex and would be quite expensive. There are few situations in which this device seems practical &mdash' allowing for freedom of movement is nice, but of course you must keep both eyes toward the display, and reconciling different viewers so that interaction in the space is possible would be extremely tricky. At all events, it&'s good that there&'s serious thought going into the next generation of displays. 3D TVs aren&'t blowing anyone away, since there&'s very little compelling 3D content and the glasses are annoying. What the next step will be, no one can say, but a pseudo-holographic eye-tracking display is a good a guess as any.[via The Register]

0 Vote(s)

Zynga said moments ago that it has acquired Texas-based mobile game company Newtoy, the maker of games such as Words with Friends on the iPhone. The price was not disclosed. The move shows that Zynga, which is big on Facebook, is serious about becoming a big presence in mobile games too. Five months ago, Zynga launched FarmVille on the iPhone, and the game has since been downloaded more than 7 million times. Overall, Zynga mobile games have been downloaded 10 million times. That&'s small for Zynga, and the company wants its mobile side to grow faster. The San Francisco company has become the largest social game company, with more than 215 million monthly active users playing its games, mostly on Facebook. Earlier this week, it announced a groundbreaking deal with American Express, which will let its cardholders buy Zynga virtual goods with their frequent-purchase rewards.David Ko, senior vice president for mobile games at Zynga, said in a conference call that the company&'s goal is to take its games to every platform so users can play anytime, anywhere. So far, the company has acquired seven companies in seven months, but none were as focused on mobile as Newtoy.McKinney, Texas-based Newtoy will become the Zynga With Friends studio, headed by co-founders of Newtoy, brothers Paul and David Bettner. Paul Bettner will become general manager of the studio while David Bettner will become director. Words with Friends, a Scrabble-like game for the mobile market, has been downloaded more than 12 million times to date. Other big titles are Chess with Friends and We Rule. Newtoy has 23 employees and was founded in 2008. The Bettner brothers had previously made big-budget PC and console games, including Age of Empires and Halo Wars.Ko said Zynga would try to increase downloads for Newtoy titles through cross promotion with other Zynga games. The acquisition has also set up an interesting competition. In October, Japan&'s DeNA acquired iPhone game maker Ngmoco for $403 million. That price was something like 13 times revenues &8212' a very high price. But DeNA is on a billion-dollar run rate with its business on mobile phones in Japan, and it is intent on expanding to Western markets for social mobile games.Zynga has made global expansion a big priority as it searches for ways to become less dependent on Facebook. The company has to diversify its risks and expand to new markets. A couple of weeks ago, the company announced that it would launch its newest game, CityVille, in five different languages. CityVille went live last night.Zynga is a privately held company with more than 1,300 employees. It has seen extremely fast growth in nearly four years. The company has raised hundreds of millions of dollars from major investors such as DST, SoftBank, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp' Byers. Secondary trading on SharesPost (where employees sell their stock to cash out early) pegs Zyngaa4a4s value at $5.6 billion. Revenue for 2010 is expected to surpass $500 million, according to Inside Network. Roughly 10 million Americans play FarmVille every day.But the dependency on Facebook is a big risk for Zynga. In any given week, Zynga can lose 10 million users or gain that many. The company really took off in June, 2009, when it launched FarmVille, a casual farm simulation that users play for minutes a day. The players have been fickle' FarmVillea4a4s audience has shrunk from 83 million monthly unique visitors earlier this year to 53.7 million. Along the way, Zynga has been marketing its other games to FarmVille players. So even if those players stop playing FarmVille, they may move on to other Zynga games. The game is available for free, but users pay real money for virtual goods such as tractor fuel. The company has expanded to Japan, but it will be interesting to watch if it can come out on top there. There are a lot of big Japanese mobile social game companies, such as DeNA, which have entrenched positions. U.S. rivals such as CrowdStar are also moving into the Japanese market. To ensure success, Zynga raised money from SoftBank and created a joint venture, Zynga Japan, to accelerate its entry into the market.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: LEDs to become $1 billion market by 2014' one way to fight EV range anxiety Previous Story: Time Warner digital guru says Netflix will have to raise its pricesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: FarmvilleCompanies: Facebook, ZyngaPeople: Mark Pincus Tags: FarmvilleCompanies: Facebook, ZyngaPeople: Mark PincusDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
It&'s been a really bad day at Yahoo. Today, the company handed out over 500 pink slips to employees, laying off 4% of its workforce less than two weeks before Christmas. And now there&'s something seriously off with its image search: do a query for just about anything using Yahoo&'s web search, click an image result, and there&'s a good chance you&'ll be looking at some very graphic pornography. The photo that appears is a closeup shot of a man and a woman fornicating. I&'d post a blurred out photo, but the result would just be a giant blur. Suffice to say, there&'s no question that this is XXX-rated. To be clear, this only happens if you run a search using Yahoo&'s main &8216'Web&' search engine and then click on one of the integrated image results a4"a4sif you use the dedicated image search feature, it won&'t work. And it&'s not like this is a freak occurrence a4" I&'ve had the same photo show up for queries for &''puppy photos&'' &''car photos&'' and &''TechCrunch photos&''.This could be the work of a disgruntled former employee, or it could be the result of a bizarre glitch (less likely). We&'re reaching out to Yahoo to find out more.Update: This issue has been going on for at least 30 minutes now, which is far longer than I expected it to last. And it&'s a big deal a4"a4sit&'s affecting a lot of people. According to the counter on the image, as of 5:56 PM PST it has been viewed 192,082 times (though I don&'t know how high that count was before this evening). Update 2: Alright, as of 6:10 PM PST it looks like Yahoo has fixed this by removing all images typically displayed as part of its web search. Update 3: Here&'s Yahoo&'s statement:Yahoo! is experiencing issues with some of our image search results. We are working with Microsoft to correct the issue as quickly as possible. We understand that this may have caused some inconvenience and apologize to users who have been affectedThanks to the folks at Zurb for the tip.

0 Vote(s)
