3D glasses are a double-edged sword for TV manufacturers. According to NPD's 3D 360&176' Monitor, an aversion to wearing glasses is the second most popular reason consumers give for not wanting to purchase a3D TV. But for those who do buy 3D TVs, glasses represent one of the best accessory sale opportunities TV manufacturers have had since the flat-panel mount. Ring up a family pack of four glasses and you can easily reach the price of what some manufacturers charge for a flat-panel 2D television by itself.(Credit:CNET) Indeed, rather than treat glasses as a throwaway, Samsung recently revamped its 3D glasses, cramming an impressive amount of technology into a wearable product 25 percent lighter than its predecessor. The electronics giant has added a circular frame that now easily grasps around various head sizes, enables a brighter 3D picture, accommodates prescriptions, switches to Bluetooth, and adds a charging gauge, all while keeping the price to about $100 per pair. But what if there were a way to sell an accessory to go with those accessories Samsung is taking a crack at just that, introducing a product at CES and showing it once again at the IFA Global Press Conference in Alicante, Spain. It's a $200 black "top hat" charger--so nicknamed for its cylindrical shape centered atop a base plate about a third of the way from its bottom--that enables owners to inductively charge up to four pairs of Samsung's new, lighter-weight 3D glasses. The high-tech spectacles surround the glossy cylinder, one atop the next, in a spiraling statue of tolerated technology.Related links&149' What turns people off from buying 3D TV&149' Samsung 3D TVs to include two pairs of glasses, additional pairs drop to $50 each&149' 3D TV FAQ In function if not in design, the accessory clearly takes a cue from charging stations for video game controllers by companies such as Nyko and Energizer--a genuine aid to the avid button masher. But does it really address a consumer need According to NPD's 3D 360&176' Monitor, the need to recharge glasses was not one of the top obstacles among those calling glasses a somewhat or serious drawback. Indeed, the 3D home video industry would be lucky to have the "problem" of being overrun with so much content that glasses would always need to be at the ready, much less the 70 hours of viewing the glasses can last before being recharged. The charger also draws attention to the active-shutter glasses needing to be recharged just as we are starting to see passive-glasses systems come to market that never need to be charged. While it may help eliminate the frustration that could result from finding a dead battery, consumers ultimately want a 3D experience that doesn't require glasses, offers an excellent viewing angle, and is supported by great movies of many genres, not just a staple of animated kids' fare. That would be quite the hat trick.

0 Vote(s)

How would you feel about putting your head in the arms of this robot(Credit:Restoration Robotics)If you've tried every potion available to stop your hair loss, you might consider getting a robot to harvest your remaining locks for hair transplant surgery. The FDA has given clearance to the Artas System, a machine that uses "image-guided robotics to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting," according to maker Restoration Robotics. First the patient sits in the Artas chair, and his hair is cut to about 1 millimeter. A camera-equipped robotic arm under the control of a doctor then initiates "small dermal punches" while harvesting individual follicles. The follicles are later manually transplanted. They develop blood supplies and gradually produce their own hair over months. No sutures or bandages were required in the prototype (PDF) of Artas, and the company expected to improve extraction rates to 750 to 1,000 follicular units per hour. The robot technique is apparently quicker and less invasive than strip harvesting, a popular method in which a band of hairy skin is transplanted to a balding area. It requires fewer staff, too. Artas works on patients with male pattern baldness who have straight brown or black hair, according to the company. If your hair is blond or red, you're out of luck. But considering the progress of robot-assisted surgery, I bet it won't be long before all hair types can be extracted and implanted by robots alone. Now when will we start seeing robot barbers

0 Vote(s)

Citing a need to protect consumers' personal information online, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is calling for a meeting with executives from Apple and Google to get more details on what the companies are doing with location information collected from consumer devices. In a statement posted to Madigan's site and picked up by Reuters, letters from Madigan have been sent to both companies asking about what data is being kept and for how long. The attorney general also seeks to find out what that data is being used for. "I want to know whether consumers have been informed of what is being tracked and stored by Apple and Google and whether those tracking and storage features can be disabled," Madigan said in a statement. "It's important that these companies ensure that their users' private information is protected."Madigan's efforts join those of other politicians and government groups who want to know more about what companies are doing with location information. Shortly following the onset last week of the iOS location controversy, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) sent a letter to Apple chiding the company for not encrypting location information that was stored locally on iPhones, as well as in iOS device backups. Congressman Ed Markey, who along with Rep. Joe Barton inquired about location privacy to Apple last year, followed suit, sending another letter (PDF) asking the company to explain what the data was being used for. There's also a lawsuit by two Apple customers, filed today in Tampa, Fla. that claims Apple's tracking is a privacy invasion and an act of computer fraud.Interest in location privacy has picked up last week in light of a database file of timestamped location information found to be stored on certain iOS devices from Apple. The tracking file was a well-known feature in the forensics and law enforcement community, but Apple has now come under fire for not answering questions about why it's there, and why there's not a way to turn the feature off.Google has also become a target of interest for what it does with user location data retrieved from its Android mobile operating system, which already makes use of user location to better its services, such as providing more accurate traffic data to its Maps product. It remains to be seen whether companies like Microsoft, Research in Motion, and Nokia do similar things with user location data.Within Madigan's letters, which can be read in full below, the AG asks whether third parties are given location information, as well as if users on both platforms can opt out of the storage of the location data. In Apple's case, the question is posed as "why didn't Apple provide customers with an opportunity to opt-out of the storage of this data" Madigan also asks Apple if there's a "mechanism whereby Apple customers can delete the information that has been stored," which is of special interest given some of the only tools that allow that have been targeted at those with jailbroken iPhones and iPads. Madigan's office is giving both companies until May 6 to respond.
LHS experiments are assembled underground. Here, a silicon tracking detector--a cousin to an ordinary digital camera sensor--is inserted into one of the LHC&39's two general-purpose experiments, the CMS.(Credit:Michael Hoch/CERN)The Large Hadron Collider has surpassed a record set by Fermilab's rival particle accelerator for what's called luminosity, a milestone that improves the odds that the gargantuan scientific experiment will produce new physics discoveries. The LHC operators yesterday packed more bunches of protons into the beam, increasing the likelihood of collisions and therefore of the detection of very rare outcomes from those collisions."Beam intensity is key to the success of the LHC, so this is a very important step," said General Rolf Heuer, director of the CERN facility that operates the LHC, in a statement. "Higher intensity means more data, and more data means greater discovery potential."It also means a better chance that the LHC will be the center of excitement in scientific circles, not the older, less powerful, but still significant Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab in Illinois. Last month, Fermilab reported enough progress in tracking down physicists' favorite unknown fundamental particle, the Higgs boson, to declare the Tevatron the "frontrunner" in the search. The Higgs boson is thought to be instrumental in endowing particles with mass. The LHC particle accelerator, an underground ring with a 27-kilometer circumference beneath Switzerland and France near Geneva, actually has two beams of protons traveling in opposite directions. The collective energy in each direction is 3.5 tera-electron-volts, or TeV, but because the beams travel in opposite directions, the energy adds up to 7 TeV. That's only half of the LHC's ultimate planned energy level of 14TeV, but it's enough that researchers think they'll be able to find new physical phenomena.Inside the Large Hadron Collider (photos) And finding new physics is important for the facility. It postponed a shutdown to upgrade the facility to the higher energy level, betting that there were good odds that the lower level would produce fruitful results. The Higgs boson--or rather a possible collection of them--is just one focus of the facility' the thousands of physicists at the LHC also hope to investigate subjects including the quark-gluon plasma, supersymmetry in among fundamental particles, and dark matter. To perform the research, the LHC accelerates protons (and sometimes lead ions) so they're tremendously energetic, then smashes them into each other to reproduce, for a fleeting moment, a little bit of what the universe was like in its earliest fractions of a second after the Big Bang.A proton must travel very close to the speed of light to attain energy of 3.5TeV. But even then, it's only got the energy of a flying mosquito. The LHC makes up for this apparent feebleness with numbers, though: It's designed to have enough protons that the total energy in the collider will be that of a 20,000-ton aircraft carrier traveling at 12 knots, according to James Gillies and Mike Lamont, writing on a CERN blog today.Reaching 3.5TeV is only one challenge. Squeezing more protons into each beam is also crucial, and LHC operators have been gradually increasing that number. Each beam consists not of a continuous stream of protons, but rather a series of bunches with about 100 billion protons each. Yesterday, the LHC got the number of bunches up to 480, which is what led to the record. Ultimately, the LHC is designed to accommodate 2,808 bunches. Each bunch is only a few centimeters long and--to maximize the odds that protons will actually collide--is compressed to the width of a human hair at the zones in the ring where collisions take place. With 100 billion protons in that volume, it may sound pretty crowded, but it's not. If protons were the size of marbles, a bunch would be as long as the distance from Earth to Uranus and the width as long a the distance from Earth to the Moon. Each marble would be more than 500 miles apart. Thus, LHC operators want to squeeze more bunches into each beam. They also want to run the beam for as long as possible to collect data from as many collisions as possible. Much of the existing LHC work has alternated between operational priorities to get the machine working properly and research priorities to actually investigate physics, but the LHC is about to embark on months-long run solely devoted to physics."There's a great deal of excitement at CERN today and a tangible feeling that we're on the threshold of new discovery," said Sergio Bertolucci, CERN's director for research and scientific computing.

0 Vote(s)

TiVo has scored an important victory in its patent battle with EchoStar. In a 7-5 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled (PDF) yesterday that EchoStar did, in fact, violate TiVo's "multimedia time warping system" patent that allows consumers to record one show, while watching another. The decision paves the way for TiVo to finally force EchoStar to disable any infringing devices in consumers' homes.TiVo's battle with EchoStar started in 2004, when the DVR company first brought to light its belief that its patent was infringed. In 2006, a Texas court granted TiVo $73.9 million in damages after finding that EchoStar violated its patent. In 2009, a U.S. District Court judge bumped that figure to $200 million.Last year, EchoStar brought its case to the U.S. Court of Appeals, which ruled in favor of TiVo in a 2-1 decision. EchoStar then asked for an en banc opinion, requiring all 12 judges to rule on the case. It was granted, and EchoStar received its answer yesterday. But the fight isn't necessarily over. In a statement released yesterday, EchoStar said that it intends to bring its case to the U.S. Supreme Court and "seek a stay of the injunction while doing so."For its part, TiVo is pleased. The company anticipates disabling the devices in question and receiving damages related to the case."We look forward to the permanent injunction against EchoStar and Dish Network finally being enforced with respect to the DVRs they must now disable," TiVo said in a statement. "This ruling also paves the way for TiVo to receive substantial damages and contempt sanctions regarding the DVRs that EchoStar and Dish Network failed to disable."EchoStar was formerly Dish Network's parent company. The satellite provider, which has been included in this case, was spun off in 2007.EchoStar noted yesterday that many of the allegedly infringing devices have been taken out of customers' homes. The company said that if it can't secure a stay, it will "work as quickly as possible to upgrade the remaining customers to our current-generation DVRs, as these are not an issue in the ruling." TiVo shares were up more than $2 to close at $10.84 yesterday, following news of the ruling.

0 Vote(s)

The Samsung Replenish is Sprint&39's first eco-friendly Android smartphone.(Credit:Bonnie Cha/CNET)NEW YORK--Earth Day is fast approaching (April 22), and though you might not think it, there are somegreen tech gadgets out there. Take, for example, the Samsung Replenish. It's Sprint's first eco-friendly Android smartphone, and the carrier just happened to be in town yesterday to show off the handset at an EcoFocus media event, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to check it out.First, what makes the Replenish environmentally friendly Well, 82 percent of the handset is made from recyclable materials and the casing is 34.6 percent post-consumer recycled plastic content. This really doesn't affect the quality of the build, as we found the phone to feel pretty solid in the hand and not too plasticky. At 4.8 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick and 4.1 ounces, it's a good size and easy to carry around. I don't think it's going to win any beauty contests, but, hey, being green can be sexy, right The Replenish is like the Motorola Droid Pro in that it combines a touch screen with a physical QWERTY keyboard. The display measures 2.8 inches diagonally and has a QVGA 240x320-pixel resolution. After testing some of the higher-end devices, it's a bit of a shock going to such a low-res screen, but the display is still clear and bright enough to get the job done. The touch screen felt responsive and though it's on the smaller side, at least you don't have to worry about pecking out messages on an onscreen keyboard. The keyboard is a little cramped compared with the ones on the Droid Pro and BlackBerry devices, so it may take a little time to adjust and find your rhythm. The buttons are raised well above the surface so they're easy to press, and they provide nice, tactile feedback--not too squishy. In addition to the keyboard, there are four physical buttons just below the display for the home, back, menu, and search shortcuts. One other interesting design feature is the optional solar battery cover. This $29 accessory, made by a company called Naturacell, lets you charge your phone using solar energy. A small sun icon will appear in the upper right corner of your screen to let you know that it's charging (see slide 4 in the photo gallery below for a closer look). The Samsung Replenish also offers support for the newest addition to Sprint ID, the Green ID pack. The custom skin provides access to environmental news sites, green tips, and other resources. Having an interest in the environment, I actually found the Green ID pack to be really cool. I particularly liked the apps that showed you the closest recycling centers and local farmers markets. I'd have to have the phone for longer than a few minutes to really see if I'd use the features of Green ID daily or if I'd get over the novelty and remove it, but I like the option. Aside from the eco-friendly goodness, the smartphone runs Android 2.2 and has a 2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, and a 600MHz ARM processor. The Samsung Replenish will be available on May 8 for a very affordable $49.99 with a two-year contract, and Sprint is waiving the monthly $10 premium data add-on fee. The Replenish will come with an energy-efficient charger and its packaging will be fully recyclable. Though it may not be everybody's cup of tea, it's not a bad option, whether you're looking for a budget-friendly smartphone or looking to help the environment.See also:Best carriers for recycling your phoneMore eco-friendly phonesCNET's green tech guideSamsung Replenish hands-on (photos)

0 Vote(s)

A map showing location-tracking information from the iPhone.(Credit:O&39'Reilly Radar)Apple iPhones and 3G iPads running iOS 4 might be tracking their owners' movements, a new report from O'Reilly Radar claims.Alasdair Allan, senior research fellow in astronomy at the University of Exeter, and writer Pete Warden say they have found evidence that theiPhone, 3GiPad, and backups on users' computers contain detailed location information, including latitude, longitude, and time stamps, that show where the mobile devices have been. In addition, the information is "unencrypted and unprotected, and it's on any machine you've synched with your iOS device," they claim. The information is reportedly stored in a file called "consolidated.db." The writers claim that the information, which isn't "always exact," started being collected around the time of the launch of iOS 4 last year. They say that they have found "tens of thousands of data points in this file" that, they believe, were collected via cell-tower triangulation. The fact that the iPhone or 3G iPad can be tracked isn't all that surprising. Apple currently offers a free app, Find My iPhone, that lets users track their smartphone from another device. The service is also available to iPad andiPod Touch owners. However, the claims made by Allan and Warden are a bit different. For one, in their findings, users don't know that they're being tracked. Moreover, exactly why that information is reportedly being tracked is unknown at this point. And as they rightly noted, "cell phone companies have always had this data, but it takes a court order to access it." Although the alleged findings will raise some red flags in the privacy and security community, it's worth noting that the information the writers allegedly came across is not being leaked out over the Web. People who are concerned that their iPhone or iPad is tracking their locations can find out with the help of an application Allan and Warden released, named iPhone Tracker. The open-source application maps all the points of location information saved in the user's devices. I ran the application on my computer to find out if my iPhone has been tracking me. It returned a detailed map showing the many places I've been with my smartphone. Allan and Warden plan to discuss their findings in more detail later today at the Where 2.0 conference in Santa Clara, Calif. Apple did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

iPads are out-trading all iPods combined as part of eBay&39's trade-in program. (click to see the full infographic)(Credit:eBay)New data put out by eBay this morning shows that consumers are trading in more than double the number of iPads than iPods as part of the company's gadget trade-in program. The tidbit accompanied news that eBay is giving Apple owners a bigger trade-in value for broken iPhones, iPads, and iPods. As part of the promotion, which coincides with Earth Day, those who trade in their nonworking gadgets can get up to $150 for a brokeniPad, $100 for aniPhone, and $50 for aniPod. eBay is also doling out a $5 gift card, and a matching $5 donation to Global Green USA to those who make a trade-in before April 30. To go along with the promotion, eBay has published an infographic, similar to the one it did for iPad 2 sales from last month that breaks down how Apple gadgets have been trading as part of the program's release in October. Based on eBay's data, iPhones continue to be the top traded-in item among Apple gadgets, fetching 71.3 percent of trade-ins. Coming at a distant second are iPads at 20.5 percent, and iPods at 8.5 percent. According to a company representative, a big reason for the iPad's more than 2-to-1 lead over all iPod models combined has been the push for iPad trade-ins both at the program's launch, and around the release of the iPad 2 last month. Just ahead of the iPad 2's launch, the company announced that more than 38,000 iPad offers had made for those looking to trade in the original model. Interestingly enough iPad models with 3G have been a far more popular trade-in compared to Wi-Fi-only models. eBay reports that 64.8 percent of the iPad models traded in sport 3G antennas. Of the iPhone models, the iPhone 3G leads trade-ins at 41.3 percent, followed by the 3GS at 36.8 percent. Just 14.7 percent of iPhone trade-ins are the iPhone 4, which eBay will pay up to $380 for if it's the top capacity model, and in working condition. Unsurprisingly, the iPod Touch leads the way among all iPod models, followed by the Nano, Classic, and Shuffle. eBay's Instant Sale program differs from its auction services by giving gadget owners a way to trade in items for cash. Users describe the quality of their item, and eBay picks up the shipping cost, as well as the job of wiping whatever data is on it. So far eBay says that 3.3 million trade-in offers have been made since the program's launch. Along with Apple devices, the program also accepts other electronics, though the company says iPhones, iPods, and iPads have been the majority of trade-ins.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Microsoft has opened the tap on its cloud-based Office 365 and is now offering the service as a public beta for anyone to try out.Available in 38 countries and in 17 languages, the new beta follows several months of limited testing among a couple thousand businesses that were able to kick the tires on the service. After the public beta, Office 365 will officially launch later this year.Unveiled last October, Office 365 is Microsoft's attempt to offer businesses a cloud-based alternative to some of its traditional desktop and server products. The service combines Office Web Apps with hosted versions of Exchange and SharePoint as well as Microsoft's Lync product, which provides the online communication and collaboration piece. As such, Office 365 is designed to offer a gamut of features, including document creation and sharing, e-mail, IM, online meetings, and public Web sites. Microsoft is also including protection in the form of its enterprise ForeFront security client and is promising a 99.9 percent uptime for the entire service.Once it officially launches, Office 365 will be offered as two different plans depending on the size of the company. Smaller businesses with 25 or fewer employees can pay $6 per person per month to receive Office Web Apps and the hosted versions of Exchange and SharePoint. Larger enterprises will have to choose one of four different plans at a cost of anywhere from $10 to $27 per person per month. In addition to targeting the business world, Microsoft is reaching out to the educational market with five different plans geared toward faculty, staff, and students. Also now available as a beta is the Office 365 Marketplace. Designed to supplement Office 365, the marketplace tries to help businesses find apps and services offered by different Microsoft partners.CNET reporter Josh Lowensohn took Office 365 for a spin last November to evaluate the service's pros and cons. He found that everything worked as advertised, but that, as things stood at the time, "Google Apps this is not."

0 Vote(s)

A school in Tuicun Village in Tibet where Suntech donated solar panels.(Credit:Suntech)Suntech Power, the China-based solar manufacturing giant, plans to build a 10-megawatt plant in Tibet. The plant will be located in the Tibetan village of Chek Kang, which is located in Sangri County, Shannan Prefecture, Suntech announced yesterday.Last month, the Chinese government announced it was building a 10-megawatt solar plant in Shigatse, Tibet's second largest city, which is also home to the huge Tashilhunpo Monastery built in the 15th century.Suntech will not only provide the solar photovoltaics for the Chek Kang project but also oversee its engineering and construction, a Suntech representative said in an e-mail.The plant is expected to supply 20,000-megawatt hours of electricity per year when completed. Suntech will manage the plant and sell the electricity to the Zangzhong grid for middle Tibet, according to the Suntech rep. Both solar projects are intended to ease local power shortages.Tibet has been relying on a hydroelectric power that has been unable to keep up with demand due to the area's increased development and to recent droughts.Tibet has been a source of international tension for China since it took over the country and sent the Dalai Lama into exile in 1959. Since then, the area has come under scrutiny regarding human rights, religious freedom, and an Internet firewall imposed on Tibet by the Chinese government. The Suntech project was announced the day after the Dalai Lama and Tibet's parliament-in-exile began month-long elections around the world to choose their next leader. The Dalai Lama announced in early March that he had decided to retire from his political role, though he will remain his people's spiritual leader.Tibetans in Tibet and Nepal have been banned from participating in the elections, according to several news sources.

0 Vote(s)

Police have arrested 184 people accused of participating in what authorities are calling the largest global pedophile network ever uncovered--and more arrests are expected, Europol said today.Authorities infiltrated an Internet child pornography forum that was the center of the network and had as many as 70,000 members at one time, Europol said in a statement. About 670 suspects and 230 children have been identified in the investigation, officials said, adding that the children have been "safeguarded." The Web site, which has been taken down, was traced to a server in Holland in 2009. Europol got a copy of it and rebuilt it offline to conduct a forensic investigation and gather digital traces that would lead back to the members. The site operated as a "discussion only" forum to protect members from prosecution. People would make contact on the site and then use e-mail to exchange photos and videos, which has been found on seized computers, according to Europol. The scale of the operation "broke new ground," Peter Davies, a U.K. police chief who leads that country's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, told The Wall Street Journal. "These offenders felt anonymous, but everything they did online was tracked using the digital footprint."

0 Vote(s)

The first iAd--an ad created on Apple's mobile-advertising platform--showed up on the device today, with more on the way.The first company to put out an iAd is Unilever, maker of Dove Men+Care. The company is working with the National Collegiate Athletic Association to give users an up-close view of three of its stars.Earvin "Magic" Johnson, John Thompson III, and Bobby Hurley will be highlighted in a new series of video ads called "Journey to Comfort." Clearly the timing of the iAds and the partnership with the NCAA come at a good time, as March Madness kicks off.In addition to watching videos, Unilever added Trivia Timeout to its iAd, where users will be asked to answer NCAA-themed questions. Fans can also access the Game Day Fan Zone where they can view daily game schedules. The Unilever iAd is the first on the iPad, but Apple confirmed for CNET that more iAds would be launching in the coming weeks.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:James Martin/CNET)As theiPad juggernaut continues with today's launch of the iPad 2, can any othertablet maker truly compete with AppleThe odds seem to be against it, at least according to the results of a survey released yesterday by ChangeWave Research. Questioning more than 3,000 consumers last month, ChangeWave found that 27 percent of them plan to buy a tablet, 2 percentage points more than a similar poll found last November.Among those eyeing a tablet, 82 percent said they'll opt for an iPad. That number compares with 4 percent looking into a Motorola Xoom, 3 percent considering Research In Motion's upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook, 3 percent for Samsung's Galaxy Tab, and 8 percent for an assorted array of other tablets. It's important to note that the survey was conducted before the Xoom was released and before Apple announced the iPad 2, so we don't know if or how the responses would be different now. But another point in Apple's favor is the wave of already happy iPad users.Among current iPad owners polled by ChangeWave, 70 percent said they're very satisfied with the tablet and another 25 percent said they're somewhat satisfied. Only 2 percent admitted to being somewhat unsatisfied, while apparently no one said they were very unsatisfied with the device.Curious to see if the iPad was cannibalizing sales away from other devices, ChangeWave asked if there were other gadgets consumers initially planned to buy or that they canceled in favor of an iPad.A total of 11 percent of those polled pointed to laptops, while 10 percent named Netbooks as devices they rejected in favor of an iPad. E-book readers also were hit, with 17 percent of the consumers saying they opted for an iPad instead of an Amazon Kindle. Another 9 percent collectively decided against other e-readers, including the Sony Reader and Barnes & Noble's Nook. The impact of the iPad on e-readers has been debated since Apple's tablet launched almost a year ago. One survey conducted in July found that the iPad was putting pressure on sales of e-readers as well as portable game consoles. But among the range of device makers struggling to compete with the iPad, Amazon is one company that could give Apple a run for its money, according to research firm Forrester. Under this scenario, however, Amazon would compete not with the Kindle but rather with its own branded tablet. In a blog posted yesterday, Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps pointed to some reasons why rival tablets have struggled against the iPad.Calling the Xoom, PlayBook, HP TouchPad, and other tablets "solid products with fatally flawed product strategies," Epps said that these devices are too expensive compared with the iPad and don't offer potential customers the user-friendly experience of popping into an Apple store. Those are two reasons why Forrester predicts Apple will grab 80 percent of the U.S. tablet market this year.Instead, Epps believes Amazon could design and sell a low-cost tablet running Android or Linux with access to its own online store as well as its upcoming Android app store. In doing so, Amazon would be able to skirt past Apple's guidelines on publishers and other app developers who sell content both through the Apple App Store and through their own stores.Further, Forrester's research shows that consumers want not only cheaper tablets but also ones not tied to expensive data plans from mobile carriers. Amazon could sell such a tablet at or below cost, says Epps, and make its profit by selling content, same as it does with the Kindle. Finally, Amazon has the brand, content, and channel to tie together a tablet, according to Epps. The analyst cited a survey that found consumers would be more comfortable buying a tablet from a familiar online retailer such as Amazon as opposed to a mobile carrier. And Amazon already sells e-books, videos, games, and other content ripe for digital consumption.Amazon itself has been looking into launching devices beyond just the Kindle, though no word yet on just what those devices might be.

0 Vote(s)

The RCB-X is powered by an alternative fuel blend of 50 percent algae-based and 50 percent NATO F-76 fuels.(Credit:U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Gregory N. Juday)NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.--U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus can measure the cost of transporting oil to combat missions in dollars and in lives. Mabus gave the keynote talk today at the ARPA-E Summit here, where he announced an agreement between the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy to create energy storage systems geared at providing reliable power and reducing fossil fuel use.His talk followed speeches by Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and representative Steve Israel of New York, who both highlighted the importance to national security of fossil fuel alternatives.Navy Secretary Ray Mabus(Credit:MC2 Kevin S. O&39'Brien/U.S. Navy)The Navy has a program, launched in fall 2009 and called the "Great Green Fleet," to convert 50 percent of its energy to fossil fuel alternatives by 2020 and to have half of the Navy's thousands of bases become net energy zero consumers. It's a reference to the "Great White Fleet," the nickname used under President Theodore Roosevelt for a battle fleet which circled the globe almost 100 years ago."Every time we make changes to improve the efficiencies of our engines or systems or we use alternative sources of power, we get better and we make people safer," Mabus said.In the agreement between the Departments of Defense and Energy, the Navy plans to take advantage of grid storage technologies developed in the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The cost of the project would be $25 million and start in fiscal year 2012.The first project will seek to develop hybrid storage systems with higher energy density than what's available in batteries today. Mabus said the technology could lead to mobile storage units for charging military equipment at bases or be used to reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. The second project will look at using storage for providing reliable power in conjunction with renewable energy systems at Navy buildings. The Navy operates 72,500 buildings across 3.3 million acres of land.A base in Afghanistan is already using solar panels to partially power its base, which has reduced the amount of diesel fuel it uses for generators. Military personnel are also using solar panels that roll up and fit into their packs, saving foot patrols from carrying 700 pounds of batteries to charge radios and electronics. In Afghanistan, fuel is the largest cost to operations and a huge logistical challenge that involves delivering the fuel across an ocean and multiple countries, Mabus said. For every $1 per barrel that the price of fuel goes up, the Navy spends $31 million more for fuel. When the price of oil went up $30 per barrel a few years ago, the Navy paid an additional $1 billion to power its aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles. Beyond those "strategic and economic" arguments for changing to less fossil fuel, Mabus said the military loses lives transporting fuel to bases. "The single thing we spend the most effort on getting to Afghanistan is fuel," he said. "The Army did a study and found that out of every 24 fuel convoys we use, a soldier or marine is killed or wounded guarding that convoy. That's a high price to pay for fuel."The need for steady and reliable power are on the rise, too, given the military's growing dependence on digital technologies. In Vietnam, a Marine patrol had two radios, compared with 30 or 50 today. The Navy is already testing biofuel replacements for its aircraft and other equipment, either made by growing plants and converting them to fuel or through "electrofuels" that use genetically engineered organisms that make fuel from water, carbon dioxide, and another energy source, such as hydrogen or electricity. The Defense Department's pursuit of fossil fuel alternatives was called into question by a RAND report in January that said alternative fuels for aviation offered "no direct benefit" from a military perspective over fossil fuels.Mabus didn't address the report specifically but said that all major energy transitions in the history of the Navy were considered too expensive and too risky by military top brass, including the move from sail to coal. He said that the Navy would never allow oil-producing countries in volatile regions to produce its ships and aircraft, but the military does give them a say in whether the Navy's equipment will work."Our dependence on fossil fuels creates strategic, operational, and tactical vulnerabilies for our forces and makes them too susceptible to price and supply shocks caused by instability or natural disasters in volatile areas of the world where most of our fossil fuel is produced," he said.

0 Vote(s)

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.--Energy Secretary Steven Chu is drawing on U.S. history in research and development to advocate for policies to encourage clean energy technology innovation for the future. Chu gave the keynote speech at the ARPA-E Summit here today, saying once again that the U.S. is in a race with China, the European Union, and other countries to create energy products expected to grow in demand. He started out by showing a graph of the rise and fall of oil prices over time, saying that people cannot accurately say where oil prices be in a few years time. Oil recently rose past $100 a barrel, and the U.S. spends about $1 billion a day importing oil."What do we do Do we hope for the best and plan for an economy at $40 a barrel" he said. "I suggest taking a longer-term, more measured approach to the problem."Secretary Chu at ARPA-E Summit 2011.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)Beyond the question of volatile fossil fuel prices, Chu argued that there is big spike in demand for accessible clean energy around the world. "Our strategy should not be hoping for the best...Let's plan for where the world is going to be," he said.He listed a number of areas in which China is taking the lead in cleaner technologies. It has, for instance, deployed high-voltage direct-current transmission lines in which only 7 percent of the energy is lost over 1,200 miles. The comparable loss on the U.S. grid would be 80 percent, he said.Meanwhile, China, France, and Japan also have invested in high-speed rail infrastructure. In finance, the U.S. lags other countries on project financing and public market financing in clean energy, although it leads in venture investing. China has passed the U.S. and other countries in roboticized, high-tech manufacturing as well, he said. The strategy at the Energy Department for promoting clean energy is to bring down the cost to lower than that of fossil fuels, Chu said. "We believe in certain instances it can be competitive with fossil fuels. Whether it's 10 years from today or 50 years from today is the question," he said. "If we get clean energies cost-competitive with fossil fuels, it's a very different world."He touted a number of research programs touching many areas, such as building efficiency, efficient air conditioning, and biofuels. In batteries, he said the Argonne National Laboratory made an advance on lithium ion batteries to improve the safety, life, and energy density of batteries. That technology has been licensed by General Motors and is expected to be used in the second generation of the Chevy Volt.Lithium ion batteries were invented in the U.S., supported by Energy Department research, but the products were commercialized in Japan. Now Japan and Korea dominate the lithium ion battery industry. But as the Argonne battery example shows, technologies can be invented and rapidly commercialized in the U.S, Chu said. "Just because we lost the lead doesn't mean we can't get it back," he said. "We still have the opportunity to lead the world in clean energy and capture the jobs of the 21st century, but time is running out. It is a race and the train is leaving the station."

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft's Internet Explorer saw a boost in market share during February, while Mozilla'sFirefox dropped, according to new numbers released by the Central Intelligence Agency and analytics firm Netmarketshare. The shift can be attributed to a re-balancing of Internet users by location, which gave China a healthy boost, while taking away market share percentage from countries that had originally weighed in heavier, such as the United States and part of Western Europe."In February, the C.I.A. released new data on how many internet users per country there are. It shows a large increase in the global percentage of Chinese users and a decrease in the global percentage of users from the U.S., U.K, Germany, France and other developed countries," the report said. "These geographic shifts in internet usage have an significant impact on the global usage share numbers starting in February."For IE, that impact amounts to 63.26 percent on Windows machines, up from 62.40 percent the previous month. Meanwhile,IE8 jumped up 1.03 percent, with IE9 gaining a modest .10 percent, and the IE9 beta topping 2.09 percent ofWindows 7 machines. As for Firefox, the browser dropped by a little more than 1 percent to fall at 21.74 percent of total Internet use.Alongside the numbers, Microsoft announced that the release candidate of IE9 had been downloaded 11 million times since its release in early February. A Microsoft representative told CNET that number includes upgrades from the beta and Web downloads. Combined with previous download numbers of the IE9 beta, the total tally is 36 million, which Microsoft says tops combined downloads of the IE8 beta, and its release candidate.Net Marketshare said that country-level reporting has been unaffected by the change, and that the adjustment will correct inaccuracies with its reports. The company also reported that the new CIA numbers had impacted Mac and iOS Internet use reporting, causing slight dips despite neither platform losing users.

0 Vote(s)

On this special edition of Reporters' Roundtable, CNET Chief Political Correspondent Declan McCullagh hosts a panel discussion on Journalism in the age of WikiLeaks. Sponsored by the The Society of Professional Journalists of Northern California, this discussion covers how WikiLeaks is forcing editors and reporters to rethink traditional journalistic practices. For example, The New York Times, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel were given a mere three weeks to decide how to handle more than 90,000 confidential documents on Afghanistan. Join us as we discuss the challenges journalists face given such information and as we consider the question of the role of professional news organizations when anyone can publish the kind of information that previously was the purview only of established news outlets. We have a great panel of six journalists in this discussion, including reporters and editors from the San Francisco Chronicle, Wired, and Fast Company.

0 Vote(s)

It seems that in-app purchase problems are starting to affect Google too. Reports surfaced Thursday that the company removed an app over a violation of "payment rules."(Credit:Google)Earlier this week, Google notified one of its developers that the developers' free app, Visual VoiceMail, was being pulled from the Android Market. The reason given was that the app violated a section of Google's developer agreement that covers pricing and payments, according to a report on GigaOM.While Google hasn't been clear about the exact violation, Jonathan Hollander of PhoneFusion, makers of Visual VoiceMail, believes the problem is that the app doesn't use Google Checkout for in-app purchases. Instead, PhoneFusion runs in-app purchases through its Web site.Google's developer agreement states that "all fees received by Developers for Products distributed via the Market must be processed by the Market's Payment Processor." In other words, developers must use Google Checkout."It looks like they're pulling an Apple but just for us," GigaOM quoted Hollander as saying. "There was no warning that they're going to enforce this, which makes it worse than Apple. Even if you disagree with Apple, they gave until June to remove their apps. Here, there's no choice."Google responded to GigaOM but would say only that it removes apps that violate its terms of service.Apple's new subscription service drew the ire of magazine and newspaper publishers when it was announced on February 15. Publishers don't like the fact that Apple is taking a 30 percent cut of revenue on customers it brings to publishers and that the company is not sharing customer information with them. Apple is giving consumers the option to share information with publishers, instead of forcing the issue.Just days after Apple's service was announced, rumors of an FTC investigation into the service began popping up, but a probe may have to be expanded if Google is found to be doing something similar.

0 Vote(s)

Agreed, human, I will operate the pod bay doors. (Credit:NASA)Robotkind got NASA to send one of their own into space today--an unassuming humanoid "robot butler" that will be in the perfect spot to destroy Earth from orbit. Sporting a terrifying mask, touting dumbbells, and tipping the scales at 330 pounds, Robonaut 2 has convinced just about everyone that despite its appearance it's not evil incarnate. NASA, GM unveil Robonaut 2 (photos) Before the macho droid lifted off in the Space Shuttle Discovery on the orbiter's final mission today at 1:53 p.m. PT, it tweeted innocently, "Excited to be a part of our nation's current & future space technology. Investments are critical to both our future in space and life on Earth." Notice how it didn't say "humanity's future." That's a dead giveaway. It's clearly referring to the Robopocalypse (and I'm not talking about the forthcoming novel by Daniel Wilson). It's no surprise that Robonaut 2, or R2, has pretty vague job aboard the International Space Station. The robot co-developed by General Motors is supposed to help the crew--and interact with it. It will be set up for certain tasks, handle tools and flip switches, working autonomously or by remote control. From its stationary platform, R2 will act as more of a technology demonstrator than a useful addition to the station, where it will live permanently. NASA wants to upgrade it in the future so it can work outside the ISS. The 3-foot-tall robot is constructed of steel and aluminum, and can hoist 20-pound loads in each of its 2-foot, 8-inch arms. Equipped with more than 350 sensors, it's controlled by 38 PowerPC processors and has four cameras and one infrared camera in its head. And all that cost $2.5 million Didn't the Death Star cost that much Clearly, R2's got some hidden technology, like planet-vaporizing laser eyes, under that slick visor. Nothing good will come of this, I tell ya.

0 Vote(s)

A suboptimal situation: snow-covered solar panels. The edge of the roof rake (on right) is covered with soft material to avoid damaging the panels.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)With many people in the U.S. bemoaning the punishing winter weather this year, solar-panel owners have their own special gripe: sun-blocking snow and ice. But at the same time, very cold temperatures have given some owners a power boost. A thick blanket of snow can slow a solar photovoltaic (PV) array's production to a trickle. That's something I discovered two years ago when a snowy winter led me to buy a modified snow rake to remove snow from my solar panels. It's now on my list of regular winter chores.Even with my diligence, this year has been particularly tough because of the frequency of the storms and the type of snow. Last week, New England had yet another dump of wet and sticky snow followed by icy rain, which made snow removal tricky. Patiently letting the sun melt the snow is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, say solar industry professionals. But many people manually remove snow in winter to maximize power output. Solar panels, it turns out, really like cold weather. At the opposite end of the country in the U.S. Southwest, frigid temperatures last week resulted in fantastically good production. The parents of my colleague Stephen Shankland have three high-end solar panels on their roof which produced just over 14.5 kilowatt-hours one day last week. That's well above the daily average for this time of year and more than my roof-full of 14 panels often does. With the temperatures in the region not getting above zero all day, the panels generated 2 kilowatt-hours for two hours in the middle of the day, which is extremely rare. It's also a good bang for your buck when you consider many homes have limited roof space with good sun.Although it may sound counter-intuitive, solar PV panels perform better in cold weather and similarly, performance degrades in high heat. Amy Beaudet, who has a solar array in Massachusetts, calculates that the maximum wattage of her array in Massachusetts is up to 25 percent higher in the winter than in the warmer months. The technical reason for the power increase is that the voltage of solar panels increases as temperatures go down, said Beaudet who does technical sales at renewable-energy e-commerce outlet AltE Store. The higher voltage (you can think of it as pressure), combined with the same current from the panels as during warm weather, results in higher wattage, she explained. The tilt of panels also figures in winter versus summer production. People who use solar panels in an off-grid situation typically angle the panels to better take advantage of the winter sun because of the shorter days, she said.Still learningBack at my house, snow removal has become a bit of a preoccupation for me on sunny days after it snows. And I'm planning on modifying my roof rake again to better ensure I don't damage the surface. With my 20-foot snow rake, I can only reach the bottom one third of the panels. So my strategy is to pull away what I can and wait for the sun to do its thing. Once more dark-colored panel is exposed, more current starts flowing and the rest of the panels heat up. Clumps of snow tend to slide down from the higher panels and I scrape those chunks off as they come. It's not unusual to hear a large thump from sliding snow on sunny days after a snow storm, something I try to remember when I walk beneath them so I don't get clobbered. The snow rake I bought at my local hardware store is made of aluminum. So to ensure that the hard head does not strike or scratch the solar panels (and generally keep metal away from electricity generation), I screwed on a strip of door weatherstripping to the edge of the rake head, which means that a strip of nylon is gliding along the panels. Now, I'm planning to screw soft pipe wrapping, the kind you insulate hot water heat pipes with, along the edge.Often, solar-panel owners use some sort of squeegee-like contraption to take snow off, said AltE Store's Beaudet. A friend of mine with newly installed panels bought a snow rake with a plastic head which allows him to push the snow off from inside the house. Another product called the Sno Knife, which has a flat plastic head designed to work in different types of snow, shouldn't damage glass-covered solar panels, according to the company. The story for solar hot water panels or tubes is very different. The copper inside solar hot water panels gathers heat relatively quickly and the snow tends to melt quickly, Beaudet said. One technical advance which is helping make shading of solar PV panels less disruptive is microinverters. Traditionally, an array of panels is wired together and connected to a single inverter, a box about the size of a PC that converts the direct current to household alternating current. One downside of this approach is that if one panel is shaded by leaves or snow, production of the entire string is compromised. Microinverters do the DC-to-AC conversion on each panel so if one panel is blocked, it doesn't affect the others. Of course, removing snow assumes you can actually get access to a roof. Often, people simply just wait for the sun and wind to do the work for you. And if it's icy, trying to scrape it off is not a great idea, said Beaudet. In my case, I popped in and out a few times on Friday in an attempt to speed up the melting with an occasional raking. I wanted to avoid a chunk of snow sliding down and freezing in place when the cold weather set in for the night. It worked: by the afternoon, the panels were cleared. Just in time for night fall--and the next forecasted storm.

0 Vote(s)

Will HTC&39's foray into the dual-core handset war start with the PyramidRumors of a dual-core Android smartphone from HTC began swirling today, thanks to information obtained by the blog AndroidAndMe.According to multiple sources, HTC should debut its first 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon handset in May. The handset, which carries the code-name Pyramid, is said to feature a 4.3-inch qHD display and support for HSPA+ connectivity. TmoNews has confirmed on its end that T-Mobile is expecting to offer the phone in the same time frame.Although the rest of the specs remain in the dark, AndroidAndMe speculates as to what the dual-core processor could provide in terms of support. Look for 1080p HD video recording, a 960x540 resolution on the display, and possibly a 16-megapixel camera.HTC will be at Mobile World Congress just two weeks from now where it will show off its latest models. While it's possible that the company could demonstrate dual-core technology on its handsets, I wouldn't hold my breath. With at least three months before its rumored launch, I would anticipate HTC waiting untilCTIA in March to show the device. On the other hand, the handset maker has a tendency to release various iterations of similar hardware across multiple carriers and regions. Perhaps the three recently leaked phones may shed some light on the hardware coming out of its camp in the first half of the year.

0 Vote(s)

According to Steve Jobs, the real battle betweeniPhone and Android phones didn't start until October.During a rare appearance on Apple's last earnings report, he admitted that Android "outshipped" Apple "as we were transitioning to iPhone 4." And he added that he was most interested in how sales of the two competing smartphone operating systems did during the final quarter of 2010.How did the iPhone 4 do vs. Android phones during the holiday shopping season (Credit:Apple )We get those results tomorrow afternoon. That's when Apple reports its fiscal first-quarter 2011 earnings, and that means accounting for its October, November, and December sales--prime holiday shopping time. Investors will also be clamoring for information about the health of Jobs, the company's CEO and alter ego. This morning, Apple revealed out of the blue that Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, would be taking a medical leave of absence. No date was given for his return, though Jobs is expected to have a say in strategic decisions, and in his absence, day-to-day operations will be handled by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who also filled in during Jobs' 2009 medical leave. The holiday sales period is crucial for any consumer goods company, but it's particularly important for the iPhone maker to see how it's doing compared to upstart mobile OS distributor Google and its free Android software. It's been proliferating across hundreds of devices and all major carriers, and over the summer began to show rapid gain in momentum. A report from ComScore last week showed Android just inched by iPhone, but remained behind Research In Motion in U.S. sales.Of course tomorrow isn't all about the iPhone. Apple observers are anxious to hear how theiPad did during its first holiday sales period and while it's still one of just a fewtablets for sale--something that will be very different come next December. Overall, financial analysts are expecting yet another great showing from Apple: on average they expect revenue of $24.38 billion and earnings per share of $5.38. Here's the breakdown, by major product category, of what to look for. iPhone: Bernstein Research thinks Apple will say it sold 15.2 million iPhones in its FYQ1, a 13 percent sequential increase over last year. Some of that increase at the end of the year can be attributed to AT&T allowing its customers to upgrade six months early without penalty starting in June. Many suspected it was a ploy to lock customers into new two-year contracts before the Verizon iPhone was announced last week.Last quarter's earnings call was infused with a little extra drama when Steve Jobs joined the conference call and promptly jumped on the comparisons being made between sales of the iPhone and Android phones. He pointed out that Android "outshipped us while we were transitioning to iPhone 4," meaning for July, August, and September sales, and that he was looking forward to seeing the results of the last quarter of the year. Tomorrow we'll find out. Obviously the biggest news so far for Apple this year is its introduction--at long last--of an iPhone able to work on Verizon's network. Now that we know Apple makes a CDMA iPhone, the next question is what other carriers that use that technology will be next to get it. KDDI in Japan is an example of a likely candidate.iPad: Though the iPad debuted in early April, the last three months of the year are likely to bear the best results for sales of the touch-screen tablet. Why Because Apple had some well-known problems with its supply of the iPad for Apple stores and other retail partners. Even during its last earnings call in October, Cook admitted that his inventory was still not beefed up to what is typical for Apple. UBS analyst Maynard Um is telling his investors that the most recent quarter for Apple was likely the first that the iPad was not experiencing those supply issues. As a result, UBS adjusted its expectations for iPad sales for the quarter, saying it expects 6 million iPads sold instead of the previous estimate of 5.5 million. The iPad was also available in more places during the holiday season: Apple stores, AT&T stores, plus Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy. Verizon also began selling the iPad bundled with a Wi-Fi hot spot in October, all factors which suggest good results tomorrow.Macs:There was only one new Mac released during the quarter, and UBS says it's expecting good results from it. Holiday sales of the MacBook Air, introduced right at the beginning of the holiday shopping season for $999 for the 11-inch model, was likely to attract shoppers, said UBS.Overall, the firm estimates 3.9 million Macs sold during the quarter, which would be 16 percent more than last holiday.iPod: Bernstein estimates Apple sold 19.3 million iPods, down 8 percent from holiday sales last year. That's despite a brand new iPod Touch with FaceTime and a "retina" display, but not much of a surprise: iPod sales have been dropping each quarter for more than a year. Come back here after 1:30 p.m. PT Tuesday to find out Apple's latest financial results.Updated at 6:14 a.m. PT: Added information about Steve Jobs' medical leave of absence.

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's proposed acquisition of travel software company ITA Software could face a DOJ review.(Credit:ITA)The U.S. Department of Justice is gearing up for a possible formal antitrust investigation into whether or not Google should be allowed to purchase travel software company ITA Software, according to a report.Bloomberg reported today that DOJ lawyers have been asked to start getting ready for a possible challenge to the deal, which was first announced last summer. Such a challenge has seemed inevitable, as following completion of the deal Google would be in a position to control software that powers the reservations systems for many of the online travel booking agencies. Google has said it plans to honor all existing agreements that ITA Software has signed with companies like Orbitz and Kayak, but a coalition of travel companies opposed to the deal isn't prepared to take Google at its word. The DOJ has been eyeing this one for several months, but work has taken on a degree of urgency because Google exercised its right to force the government to make a decision one way or another within 30 days of providing such notice, according to Bloomberg. Such uncertainty involving large transactions could be a real problem for Google in 2011, if companies like Groupon that would automatically trigger federal review decide it's not worth doing business with Google and having to endure a six-month period of limbo.

0 Vote(s)

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.--Engineers believe they have zeroed in on the root cause of cracks in the shuttle Discovery's external tank, NASA officials said today. Installation of a relatively simple modification to the tops of the structural ribs, or stringers, where the ship's liquid oxygen tank is supported by a massive flange should resolve the problem once and for all, officials say, setting the stage for another launch attempt February 24."We're on the road to bringing this tank to a hundred percent," said shuttle Program Manager John Shannon. "It's been two months of very vigorous activity, it took a lot of investigation to piece the different components of how this could be happening together, but I'm very confident we've finally got this figured out and we have a fix that's easy to implement and will be 100 percent effective."Engineers are preparing to install stiffeners on the shuttle Discovery&39's external tank that should prevent the formation of cracks like those discovered in the wake of a November 5 launch attempt. NASA managers hope to make another launch attempt February 24.(Credit:NASA)Discovery's late February launch window opens the day after the European Space Agency's unmanned Automated Transfer Vehicle, loaded with supplies and equipment, reaches the International Space Station. The ATV is scheduled for launch from French Guiana on February 15. Mission managers initially planned a docking on February 26, but ESA, NASA, and Russian managers have agreed to aim for a docking February 23 instead. Assuming the ATV takes off and docks on time, Discovery would be set for another launch attempt at 4:50:13 p.m. ET on February 24.If all goes well, NASA hopes to have the shuttle Endeavour ready for launch on its final mission by around April 18. But planning for that flight is somewhat uncertain. Commander Mark Kelly's wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot in the head Saturday in Tucson by a gunman who killed six and wounded 13 others. Giffords remains in critical condition. At a news briefing today to discuss the external tank investigation, Bill Gerstenmaier, director of space operations at NASA headquarters in Washington, declined to discuss Kelly's status, saying "out of respect to the family, we really are not ready to answer those questions today.""We're going to let Mark decide really kind of what he needs to do," Gerstenmaier said. "We'll let his personal situation take focus...and later when we know more about where [the Endeavour mission] sits and what our options are for Mark and his activities, we'll come talk to you at that time...Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and we're really thinking about Mark in everything we do."The external tank crack problem first surfaced during fueling for a November 5 launch attempt. Discovery's countdown was called off because of a gaseous hydrogen leak, a problem that was later resolved. But engineers also noticed a large crack in the external tank's foam insulation that developed during fueling. When the foam was removed later, four cracks were found in the "feet" of two adjacent ribs in a compartment that separates the tank's liquid oxygen and hydrogen sections. The cracks presumably developed when the liquid oxygen tank was loaded with super-cold propellant, causing the flange that supports it to contract, pulling the top few inches of the intertank stringers inward. Tank components are designed to cope with that stress without breaking, but for some reason cracks developed near the tops of two stringers in Discovery's tank.Engineers were immediately concerned, citing two potentially serious issues. Cracked stringers could result in foam insulation falling off during flight that could pose an impact threat to the shuttle's fragile heat shield. And if enough stringers failed, the structural integrity of the tank could be compromised.NASA launched a wide-ranging investigation to figure out the root cause of the cracks and what might be needed to correct the problem. A full-scale instrumented fueling test was carried out December 17 to precisely map out the stresses acting on the tank during fueling. Discovery then was moved off the pad and back to the Vehicle Assembly Building for additional inspections.Engineers then found four more cracks on the back side of the tank near the tops of three stringers, which could not be inspected at the launch pad. Like the first set of cracks, these were repaired by splicing in fresh stringer segments and attaching doublers for additional strength.Believing built-in stresses from assembly likely caused the cracks, engineers proposed installing doublers on stringers to either side of massive solid rocket booster attachment panels that experience the most stress during flight. But as it turned out, the issue was more complicated than first suspected. Engineers reviewing manufacturing records discovered that the aluminum-lithium alloy used in 78 of the 108 stringers in the intertank of Discovery's external tank came from a batch that had a mottled appearance, possibly the result of heat treatments during the alloy's formulation. Testing showed the material used in those stringers had just 65 percent of the expected fracture strength. On New Year's Eve, Shannon said, engineers successfully re-created a crack using the same mottled aluminum-lithium alloy in a test rig that subjected it to the same sorts of stress the tank experiences during fueling."We absolutely have root cause and we have been able to show that through tests," he said. "It's a combination of two factors. It's the low fracture toughness of the material...combined with some assembly stresses that were built up in different areas."We know that because when we loaded the tank [with propellant], we put high stress on all of those stringers that had that low fracture toughness and we only had cracks in 5 of what we believe were 78 stringers. In looking at those stringers that cracked, we're seeing the evidence of those assembly stresses that combined with that low fracture toughness to cause the problem. So we have root cause and we have a fix that we're completely confident will eliminate those root causes."The fix is installation of radius block plates all the way around the circumference of the upper intertank to beef up the under-strength stringers. The repair calls for engineers to remove the top few rivets holding the sides of each stringer in place. An aluminum plate--a radius block--is then placed over the stringer attachment "feet" and riveted into place. The idea is to lock the stringer flat against the side of the tank and make it less susceptible to the stresses that could cause fractures to develop.Shannon said engineers are carrying out tests and analyses to make sure the repairs do not introduce any unintended consequences."We're proving that out through tests, we're looking at the strain, we're looking at the stiffness and verifying in the tests that material that does not have a radius block does not behave any different than one that does have a radius block," he said. "We're going through and modeling that through the entire tank and verifying we're not going to do any harm. Right now, it looks really good."The repair work is expected to be completed by around January 23. After that, engineers will move Discovery back to pad 39A for work to ready the ship for launch.

0 Vote(s)

Device attaches to windshield and connects to car&39's electrical system(Credit:Inthinc)A 2009 study (PDF) from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that truck drivers who were texting were 23 times more at risk of a "crash or near crash event" than "nondistracted driving." As reported by CNET's Jennifer Guevin, the study also found that "texting took a driver's focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds--enough time...to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph." Teenage drivers are especially vulnerable. In addition to being less experienced drivers, they are more likely to text than adults. A Federal Communications Commission consumer advisory on texting while driving quotes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as reporting that driver distraction was the cause of 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008, resulting in 5,800 fatalities and 515,000 injuries. The American Automobile Association says that "taking your eyes off of the road for two seconds doubles your risk of getting into a crash."Inthinc, a Salt Lake City company, was at the Consumer Electronics Show with a solution for parents and companies whose employees have company issued phones. The product, which is called Tiwi and costs $299 plus a $29.95 monthly subscription fee, can disable a cell phone for calling or texting, according to CEO Todd Follmer. It can also report the person's speed, whether they're engaged in aggressive driving, and even if they're using their seat belt. Parents or employers can check in via an Internet portal.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally introduces the Ford Focus Electric.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Ford CEO Alan Mulally introduced the automaker's first-ever zero-emissions vehicle Friday in his keynote address at the 2011 CES convention in Las Vegas: The Focus Electric, a new version of the little sedan which Ford says offers better mileage than the Chevy Volt and charges twice as fast as the Nissan Leaf."This is our first ever gas-free, zero carbon dioxide emissionscar," Mulally said. "(It's) a great step forward in electrification, and part of an even more comprehensive plan for bringing affordable fuel efficiency technology to millions of people around our world."It was Mulally's third consecutive time giving a keynote talk at theCES trade show' this time, there was huge applause when Consumer Electronics Association president and CEO, announcing Mulally, mentioned the fact that Ford had made it through the recent economic crisis without a government bailout. The Focus Electric will launch later this year and is considered to be the flagship vehicle in a collection of electrified Ford cars that the company says will number five by 2012. The car has a top speed of 84 miles per hour, but Ford did not disclose the range that it can drive before needing a recharge.Focus vehicles for the U.S. market will be assembled in Ford's Michigan plant, "production powered in part by one of the largest solar energy generator systems in the state" according to a release.Ford executives hyped up the car's "holistic vehicle ownership experience," as Sherif Marakby, director of Ford's electrification programs and engineering, called it: an improved version of Ford's MyFord Touch console, with specialized SmartGauge display technology to help car owners drive more efficiently and see a "range view" to determine how far they are from a charging station' "value charging," a new partnership with Microsoft to calculate the most cost-efficient charging options by taking advantage of off-peak and discounted utility rates' and MyFord Mobile, a new mobile app that lets Focus Electric owners find charging stations (through a partnership with the AOL-owned MapQuest), determine the best charging times, unlock the car doors, and even post electric-driving achievements to social-networking sites.Ford says that it is working with utility companies to work on handling the demand that plug-in vehicles will place on the electrical grid, and that for customer convenience it expects that the number of public charging systems in US will rise from 1,800 (mostly in California) to 12,000. At-home charging stations will be serviced through a partnership with Best Buy's Geek Squad.More of Ford's green auto plans will be revealed later this month at the North American Auto Show, said Ford head of global product development Derrick Kuzak when he joined Mulally onstage in the keynote address. "But the new Focus just felt more at home at CES," he said.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)Some of the companies that manufacture parts forApple's iPad are anticipating the company may ship 65 million of the tablet devices in 2011, according to an article in today's DigiTimes. That number far outstrips current market estimates of about 45 million. As recently as this past summer, 25 million iPads in a year was considered a staggering number. The estimates come via LG Display and Samsung, two of the companies that Apple has enlisted to build the display technology for the iPad. Looking at the 65 million figure as well as the fact that LG shipped 1.5 million iPad panels in November and Samsung shipped 1.2 million that month, DigiTimes assessed that this reflects not just Apple's optimism about the growing popularity of tablets but also potentially the sense that Apple may be "overbooking" its orders of panels. The iPad debuted in April. Analysts have guessed that Apple's total 2010 iPad sales will turn out to be around 10 million, outpacing sales of the original iPhone.DigiTimes, which is based in Taiwan, has been keeping a close eye on iPad parts manufacturers of late, primarily because of the likelihood that details may emerge about the technical specifics of a rumored second-generation iPad that may be released before spring.

0 Vote(s)

In the new book The Birth of the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing photographer Edgar Turner gives aviation fans a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at the making of one of the most anticipated planes of all time.(Credit:Ed Turner/Boeing)commentary It's been eight years in the making so far, and has gone through any number of delays and problems, but Boeing's 787 Dreamliner is still one of the most-anticipated commercial airplanes in history. And with the plane's testing program under way for almost exactly a year, it is edging closer and closer to carrying its first passengers. Now, fans of the innovative plane--it is made from 50 percent composite material and is expected to offer carriers up to 20 percent savings on fuel--can get a fix unlike any offered before. With Edgar Turner's new book, "The Birth of the 787 Dreamliner," anyone interested in the 787--or in commercial aviation in general--can get a great look at what it takes not only to make a major new airplane, but to get a program like the 787 off the ground to begin with.In his book, Turner--a Boeing photographer with terrific access to the entire program--uses his pictures to showcase the entire eight years of development of the 787. He traveled to Boeing facilities throughout the world, as well as to supplier partners, in order to illustrate as much of the process of building the Dreamliner as possible. Divided into sections on the plane's unusual components, its assembly, and "The Dream," or the program's current era, the book offers an education into major aviation development and manufacturing. To be sure, the timing of the book's release is less than ideal, given that the 787's test program is currently grounded due to a recent on-board control panel fire. But while the 787 has had more than its share of problems and delays--from manufacturing issues to strikes to supply shortages, and more--it is still expected to be carrying its first commercial passengers sometime in 2011. And there's no doubt that the book is a very large and prominent promotional effort for the new plane. The 787 made its first flight on December 15, 2009, from Boeing's Paine Field, in Everett, Wash.Stunning photographyWhen you pick up Turner's book, the first thing that strikes you is its heft. This is a big, heavy book, and it comes with a matching price--$85, though it's available on Boeing's site for $49. But when you open the cover, it's the photographs that will transfix you.I would challenge anyone, aviation buff or not, to not get lost in this book. Turner's pictures are stunning, and his access is unlike anything I've seen before. While Boeing makes countless images available on its Web site, it doesn't offer anything like what is in Turner's book--though a few of the same pictures appear in the official 787 imagery. But it's images like those, which offer detailed and intricate looks at just about every element of the airplane, that will keep anyone turning the pages--and turning them slowly. That, plus, pictures of things like the 787's painting process, the Dreamliner Production Integration Center--where Boeing keeps real-time track of the plane's worldwide supply chain--the first flight, the loading of parts of the plane's fuselage on the specially-made 747 Dreamlifter, and much, much more are what make the book worth its price.I wish I could show you more pictures. But it seems the publisher wants you to buy the book for that.

0 Vote(s)

Who says Flash video has to monopolize your laptop and drain its battery at scary rate Aside from Steve Jobs, that isDivx, the video technology company whose software is in dozens of Blu-ray players and other devices, is releasing today a browser plug-in, DivX HiQ, that replaces the video engine in Adobe's own Flash player with what they say is its own, lighter, faster, better, stronger player. The pitch: now you can get a good video experience even on your underpowered old computer, or your Netbook.Once installed -- it comes as part of the DivX Plus Web Player, available on Download.com -- when you hit a video on a site that the player knows about, like YouTube, you get a second "play" button under the usual player. I tested the beta of HiQ on a few systems--a worn-out old ThinkPad, a 2-year-old MacBook, and a screaming fast desktop--and found the biggest gain on the ThinkPad. Videos played more smoothly, especially when I selected high-definition streams (720p or 1080p). I was able to play all videos in full-screen mode, too, something I haven't attempted on this PC for a while. I didn't notice much of a performance difference on my MacBook or my desktop PC. The DivX HiQ add-on gives you a supplementary Play button on selected sites. YouTube shown.(Credit:Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNET) DivX rep Ryan Taylor told me that his company's video decoding technology is just better, which means devices running it can do more video with less horsepower, leading to better-looking movies, better battery life, and cooler laps. The HiQ product can also use the graphics processor of the computer it's running on, to put the video decoding on the chip best designed to do it. Adobe, though, is currently beta-testing its own Flash Player 10.2, which also uses the graphical processing unit. Why Adobe is still, in 2010, in beta on GPU-accelerated video decoding is an open question' this feature should have been baked into the player at least a year ago. DivX's little freebie add-on is a bit of a marketing play. The download will come with an optional codec pack and a converter tool. But mostly, as Taylor says, "it identifies and links our brand the highest-quality playback possible." The company has not discussed this add-on with Adobe or with Apple. You can get DivX technology running on several tablet computers today, including the hot new Galaxy Tab. But it won't work as an end-run around Apple's Flash block for theiPhone oriPad. (It also won't work on sites that apply DRM to streams, like NetFlix or Hulu.) If you want to watch full-screen videos on your Netbook today, the DivX HiQ player is a good bet. I'd recommend it over the Flash 10.2 beta, since it's released code, and since as an add-on to your already-installed Flash player it can easily be ignored if it doesn't work better. But once Adobe pushes the 10.2 update out of beta, DivX will have to rely on the attraction of the other parts of the download bundle to get people to even know about it.

0 Vote(s)

The long saga of the Lime Wire company appears to be close to an ending. The maker of the popular LimeWire file-sharing software--a peer-to-peer setup along the lines of the original Napster--has announced that at the beginning of next year, it will cease business, as originally reported by Peter Kafka at All Things Digital.Owing to a copyright complaint filed against it in 2006 by the Recording Industry Association of America, Lime Wire had already been ordered, in October of this year, to shut down its P2P service. But, following Napster's example, it had previously opened a legitimate online music subscription service, featuring content from independent labels, and had said it was planning to set up a new service that would include content from the majors. It seems those efforts are both going the way of the P2P program."Given our current situation, plans to bring our separate, legal music service to market have been canceled. The beginning of 2011 will mark the closing of LimeWire's New York office and cessation of business by LimeWire," Kafka quoted the company as saying. The LimeWire Store also bears a notice informing visitors that no new subscribers are being accepted and that existing subscriptions will not be renewed.Kafka speculated that the company was trying to trim its assets prior to a court decision on how much it owes the major music labels as a result of the ruling in the RIAA case. That ruling found that Lime Group, parent of Lime Wire, and founder Mark Gorton committed copyright infringement, induced copyright infringement, and engaged in unfair competition. Gorton and the company have acknowledged making millions of dollars from the LimeWire software. Damages could be in the billions.

0 Vote(s)

General Electric has released an Energy Star-compliant LED light designed as a long-lasting and efficient replacement for a 40-watt incandescent bulb. The General Electric 9 Watt Energy Smart became available online for $50 earlier this week and will be available through GE's existing retail channel in January, according to the company. The A19-shape bulb uses 9 watts and is rated to last 25,000 hours, or 22 years at three hours of daily use. It gives off 471 lumens, has a white light at 3,000 Kelvin, and does not contain mercury or lead.GE said it is the first incandescent-shape LED bulb to meet the new Energy Star tests for this category.GE&39's Energy Smart LED A19 Lamp is a 40-watt incandescent equivalent which uses 9 watts. (Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)Both incumbent lighting companies and newcomers are introducing incandescent-shape LED bulbs, which are available online and now in big box retail stories. In terms of price, other LED bulb manufacturers are offering products that give off more light and are cheaper at retail. Lighting Science Group, for example, has a 40-watt equivalent available through Home Depot which now costs under $18. A GE representative said that retailers, which GE will name in coming weeks, will set the price of GE's Energy Smart bulb.GE is trying to distinguish its product with good light dispersal, saying the bulb works for lighting applications typically not well suited for LED lights, such as desk lamps and overhead lamps. LEDs give off light in one direction and some of early incandescent-shaped LED bulbs give off most light on one side, rather than evenly.GE's bulb has eight fins that run down the side of what looks like a thin bulb. That design allows it to disperse light more evenly and take away heat, which is important for the promised long life of LEDs.

0 Vote(s)

Online retailers rang up more than $1 billion in sales this past Cyber Monday, according to data released yesterday by ComScore.Adding up to a 16 percent gain in sales over the same day last year, Monday's cybershopping spree was the heaviest online spending day in history, said ComScore, and the first to cross the billion-dollar mark. Overall, the start of the holiday season has brought good cheer to online retailers. More than $13.5 billion was spent online from November 1 to 29, a gain of 13 percent from last year.(Credit:ComScore)The growth in Cyber Monday sales was driven more by higher spending per person than by an increase in shoppers. On average, consumers spent 12 percent more than they did last year, while the number of shoppers rose just 4 percent to 9 million. But promotions and discounts on the part of retailers have also helped cook up holiday sales so far."The online holiday shopping season has clearly gotten off to a very strong start, which is welcome news," ComScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a statement." At the same time, it's important to note that some of the early strength in consumer spending is almost certainly the result of retailers' heavier-than-normal promotional and discounting activity at this early point in the season. So, while we anticipate that there will be more billion-dollar spending days ahead as we get deeper into the season, only time will tell if overall consumer online spending remains at the elevated levels we've seen thus far."

0 Vote(s)
