The logo for Tiny Speck's Glitch, which went into beta last week after more than a year of development by a team led by Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield and fellow Flickr veterans Serguei Mourachov, Cal Henderson, and Eric Costello.(Credit:Tiny Speck)This is your chance to enter the world of the giants.Last week, Glitch, the new online game from Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield's company Tiny Speck went into beta. A whimsical playground that lets users meander through a complex, stylized virtual world, Glitch might someday be a place populated by millions of people looking for a little more than your standard Facebook game. But for now, anyone wanting to play the game has to wait in a line of thousands of people queued up for the Glitch beta. Not you, though. At least, not if you're one of the first 111 people to follow this link. This is a free pass to get into the game and avoid the lengthy wait.Soon enough, Glitch will be available to the whole world, but for now, there's a velvet rope in front of the entryway, and CNET is offering you the chance to hear the bouncer say "come on in." But only if you're quick. After 111 people click that link, the slots will be gone. So don't wait.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Microsoft has opened the tap on its cloud-based Office 365 and is now offering the service as a public beta for anyone to try out.Available in 38 countries and in 17 languages, the new beta follows several months of limited testing among a couple thousand businesses that were able to kick the tires on the service. After the public beta, Office 365 will officially launch later this year.Unveiled last October, Office 365 is Microsoft's attempt to offer businesses a cloud-based alternative to some of its traditional desktop and server products. The service combines Office Web Apps with hosted versions of Exchange and SharePoint as well as Microsoft's Lync product, which provides the online communication and collaboration piece. As such, Office 365 is designed to offer a gamut of features, including document creation and sharing, e-mail, IM, online meetings, and public Web sites. Microsoft is also including protection in the form of its enterprise ForeFront security client and is promising a 99.9 percent uptime for the entire service.Once it officially launches, Office 365 will be offered as two different plans depending on the size of the company. Smaller businesses with 25 or fewer employees can pay $6 per person per month to receive Office Web Apps and the hosted versions of Exchange and SharePoint. Larger enterprises will have to choose one of four different plans at a cost of anywhere from $10 to $27 per person per month. In addition to targeting the business world, Microsoft is reaching out to the educational market with five different plans geared toward faculty, staff, and students. Also now available as a beta is the Office 365 Marketplace. Designed to supplement Office 365, the marketplace tries to help businesses find apps and services offered by different Microsoft partners.CNET reporter Josh Lowensohn took Office 365 for a spin last November to evaluate the service's pros and cons. He found that everything worked as advertised, but that, as things stood at the time, "Google Apps this is not."

0 Vote(s)

Amazon scored tops in customer service out of 143 different companies, according to the Temkin Group.Based on a survey of 6,000 different consumers in January, the 2011 Temkin Experience Ratings rated companies across a variety of industries based on recent dealings with customers. The survey looked at interactions online, in person, and over the phone, and asked consumers how their needs were met, how easy it was to do what they needed to do, and how they felt about the overall experience.Retail chains did well in the survey, with Amazon followed by Costco, Lowe's, and Sam's Club for the top five spots. With an experience rating of 81 percent out of 100, Amazon did especially well in meeting the needs of those customers surveyed and offering a positive experience overall.(Credit:Temkin Group)But other industries didn't fare as well.Noting that only nine companies took home a rating of "excellent," the Temkin Group singled out PC makers in general as scoring poorly in the customer experience. Apple, which typically gets high marks for customer service, scored only 60 percent, which in Temkin's analysis put it in the bottom half of all companies rated. But even in Temkin's report, Apple did rank the highest in its industry, leaving other PC manufacturers, such as Acer, Dell, Gateway, HP, and Lenovo, further down the list.Wireless carriers, Internet service providers, and TV providers also were among those low in the rankings, according to Temkin. Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and AT&T all wound up in the bottom half of all companies as did Time Warner and Cablevision. Cable TV giant Comcast was second to last among all 143 companies, while TV providers as a whole were at the very bottom of the list, just below health care providers.Overall, only 16 percent of all the companies ranked received an "excellent" or "good" rating with the rest graded as "okay," "poor," or "very poor." A phone call to the Temkin Group to shed more light on its findings was not returned in time for publication of this post, however, the company explains some of the methodology behind rankings at its Web site.Related links&149' Secrets of Apple's customer success&149' Survey: T-Mobile tops in customer satisfaction&149' Survey: Facebook fails at customer satisfaction

0 Vote(s)

Robert Bailis(Credit:Yale University)Boeing's two-year study of jatropha-curcas agriculture in Brazil has found that location choice and strong seeds are the key to maximizing the crop's benefits, the company said today. The jatropha-curcas plant has been under close scrutiny in recent years by scientists and companies because its olives yield an oil that can be made into an alternative jet fuel. The weedy plant can grow in adverse soil conditions. And in addition to yielding oil, it provides, like most plants, the secondary benefit of removing carbon from the atmosphere. Many have been trying to compare the carbon footprint of producing petroleum-based jet fuel vs. producing jatropha-based jet fuel, which includes both the farming and processing.Robert Bailis, an assistant professor, and Jennifer Baka, a doctoral student, of Yale University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies led the research. They concentrated on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that were reduced in a given area as a result of jatropha farming and fuel production. The also looked at the socioeconomic impact of producing the crop and its fuel. Jennifer Baka(Credit:Yale University)Theirs was a real-world study that collected data from jatropha farms and processing plants in Brazil, and included interviews with the farmers and processors. The farms ranged in size from 10 hectares to thousands of hectares."This analysis presents a comparison of life-cycle [greenhouse gas] emissions from synthetic paraffinic kerosene (SPK) produced as jet fuel substitute from jatropha curcas feedstock cultivated in Brazil against a reference scenario of conventional jet fuel," the report stated.Bailis and Baka found that the type of land on which the jatropha plant grew had a direct correlation to its carbon footprint in comparison with petroleum-based jet fuel. When planted on lands that were already fallow or degraded by use, the jatropha crop reduced greenhouse gas emissions by over 60 percent of the area's baseline levels when compared against production of petroleum-based jet fuel. However, in woodland areas that had been home to trees and shrubs and were cleared for the sole purpose of cultivating and processing jatropha, the emissions ratio actually increased.Bailis and Baka also found that some farmers struggled due to poor resources."A second important finding is that early jatropha projects suffered from a lack of developed seed strains, which led to poor crop yields," the report said. The results pointing to the importance of careful choice of land and seed may seem obvious. But this is one of the first studies conducted in Latin America that uses hard data and interviews, as opposed to estimates and computer modeling, and applies it to the sustainability criteria developed by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels, according to Boeing.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Toshiba)One of our favorite laptops in recent memory (and giving rise to one of the most popular laptop reviews we published last year) was the Toshiba R705. This slim 13-inch laptop packed in tons of features and decent performance, all for around $800, and was one of the best Windows-based alternatives for those who like the general size and shape of MacBooks but need a Windows machine. But with the first few rounds of laptops featuring Intel's second-gen Core i-series processors hitting stores, the R700 series is a bit behind the times. Toshiba has mentioned the next version, the R800, a few times, but specs, prices, and actual availability information have been sketchy. Now detailed specs and prices are up on Toshiba's Web site (we spotted these via Engadget), and they run from the $889 Intel Core i3-2310M Portege R835-P50X to the $930 R835-P56X, which has a Core i5-2410M processor. All four models have 640GB hard drives and USB 3.0 ports. We were actually able to add one of the four R835 models to a shopping cart on the Toshiba site, with a shipping time of 1 to 2 days, but that appears to be a site error, as Toshiba says the U.S. versions of the R800 laptops haven't been officially announced yet. We screen-grabbed the page in case it gets pulled, so check out the different R835 models and their specs and prices below.

0 Vote(s)

This illustration, based on GeoEye satellite photo viewed through Google Earth, shows the locations of the six Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors. The reactors are about 140 miles northeast of Tokyo.(Credit:Photo from Google and GeoEye' graphic by Stephen Shankland/CNET)Problems are cascading at a Japanese power plant, where explosions and fires are making it dangerous for workers to try to keep new overheating problems in check. The Fukushima Daiichi plant on the northeast coast of Japan, with six reactors, was damaged by last week's magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunamis. When the natural disaster struck, reactors 1, 2, and 3 were running and units 4, 5, and 6 were shut down for a regular inspection. The first overt problems appeared at the three operating reactors, where heat remains an issue even though control rods were automatically inserted to stop the nuclear reaction when the quake struck. Now, though, troubles are spreading to the other reactors, leading to an unusual but aborted attempt to cool nuclear fuel by dumping water from a helicopter today. And those troubles are spreading to the workers and potentially to others, because fires and hot-gas venting release radiation to the environment. Overheating can lead to a meltdown, in which the nuclear fuel gets so hot it melts, possibly breaching containment mechanisms. Here's how the problem escalated, according to accounts from the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco), which runs the plant, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which oversees nuclear issues for the United Nations. On Friday, the earthquake and tsunami knocked out the site's main electrical power supply and backup generators, making it hard to cool the nuclear fuel rods in the reactors and the cooling ponds nearby. On Saturday, an explosion from a buildup of hydrogen gas damaged the building around reactor 1. The explosion didn't breach the containment vessel around the reactor itself within the building, however. On Monday, a second similar explosion occurred at reactor 3. To try to keep the reactors cool, the operators started pumping seawater into the reactors, a last-ditch measure. On Tuesday, the water level in reactor 2 couldn't be kept up, and it too suffered an explosion even though workers had begun pumping seawater into it on Monday. This explosion, at 6:14 a.m. local time, was more serious: it damaged the reactor's primary containment vessel.Bad went to worse at 8:54 a.m., when a two-hour fire began at reactor 4. "The spent fuel storage pond at the unit 4 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is on fire and radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere," the IAEA said. The reactor's fuel had been unloaded during the inspection and stored in the fuel pond. There had been much smaller releases of radiation from earlier events, for example when workers vented air to relieve pressure, but this fire was much more serious. At one point on Tuesday, the radiation level was at a dose of 400 millisieverts per hour between reactors 3 and 4, the IAEA said. For comparison, the annual dose limit for workers in Japan is 50 millisieverts per year. An emergency level permitted 100 millisieverts per year, but that's been raised to 250 millisieverts per year, according to information from Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. A chest X-ray has a dose of about 0.2 millisieverts, and the average person gets a dose of about 2.4 millisieverts per year from natural sources such as radon and cosmic rays, according to the IAEA.By early this morning, radiation levels had dropped to a dose rate of 0.6 millisieverts per hour. An evacuation of residents within 20 kilometers of the Fukushima Daiichi plant already had begun, and it was finished Tuesday. With the new events, the Japanese government also advised people living within 30 kilometers to stay indoors. At the plant itself, most workers were evacuated. The New York Times shows the harrowing lives the remaining 50 employees lead trying to deal with the power plant's problems, though their plight eased somewhat when dropping radiation levels permitted 50 people to return.Today, workers focused attention on reactor 3, which is fueled with a combination of plutonium and uranium oxides. The reactor was emitting steam, leading authorities to believe the containment vessel had ruptured. To try to cool fuel at the spent-fuel pools at reactors 3 and 4, personnel in a military helicopter tried dropping water from a helicopter, according to mediareports. That didn't work, apparently because of concerns about flying the helicopter in the radioactive steam. (Al Jazeera English has footage of the helicopter cooling attempt. See the video embedded below.) Another plan is to spray water from ground positions onto the hot spots.Reactor 4 doesn't appear to be the only one that's got problems despite being shut down. The water level at reactor 5 also is dropping, down to a level 201cm above the top of the stored fuel rods by 9 p.m. local time Tuesday, the IAEA said. That was a 40cm drop from five hours earlier. To deal with the situation, plant operators planned to use a diesel generator at reactor 6 to pump in new water. Reactors 5 and 6 were still loaded with fuel during the inspection. The situation has undermined a renaissance of the nuclear energy industry. And with the world's eyes upon the nuclear plant's crisis, a new tone came to Tepco's ordinarily terse, bare-facts reports. In one report Wednesday, Tepco said:"We are aware of and sincerely apologize for the great distress and inconvenience this incident has caused to not just those inhabitants residing in the immediate vicinity but also society at large."

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)According to new research, Apple will sell between 3.5 million and 3.7 million Macs in the fiscal quarter ending in this month. The data comes from market research firm NPD and was sent to clients by Piper Jaffray senior research analyst Gene Munster. Interpreting the data, Munster says he believes Apple will finish the quarter at the lower end of expectations. For January and February, Apple is trending up 16 percent over the year-ago quarter. That would put Apple at about 3.6 million Macs for the quarter. The street consensus is for Macs to be up in the 22 percent range year over year. The 16 percent gain would put Apple within, but at the low end, of Munster's expectations of 15 percent to 25 percent. Munster notes that there may have been a pause in sales as Apple readied to release the new MacBook Pros in February. That would also lead to a rise in sales for March, which are not yet reflected in the numbers.iPad sales are also falling in line with expectations, according to Munster. Currently theiPod is tracking down 11 percent over last year, meeting his range of being down between 5 percent to 10 percent. The NPD data suggests Apple will sell between 9.8 million and 10.3 million iPods this quarter. Munster said he believes the street expectations are around 10.2 million iPods for the quarter.

0 Vote(s)

On Tuesday, six buses leaving from five cities around the U.S. will carry 150 people to the SXSW Interactive conference in Austin, Texas. This is image courtesy of the Startup Bus project--in which participants have 48 hours to create the best start-up they can engineer.(Credit:Startup Bus)It sounds like the beginning of a joke: a couple dozen coders and geek entrepreneurs step off a shiny, high-tech bus at a barbecue joint in Texas. But a joke it's not. It's a scenario that will likely play out this week on the Startup Bus, which is, yes, a group of a couple dozen coders and geek entrepreneurs riding a shiny, high-tech bus through the Lone Star State from their hometowns to the South by Southwest Interactive conference (SXSW Interactive) in Austin, Texas, part of the broader SXSW music and film festival. This is no ordinary bus trip though. These coders and would-be Mark Zuckerbergs are taking part in a high-paced competition: broken up into small teams once they board the bus on Tuesday, they will have the 48 hours of their drive to try to come up with the best, and most viable, tech start-up. And there's not just one bus, either. Indeed, "buspreneurs" will be loading up their laptops and Red Bull in cities across the country: New York, Miami, Cleveland, Chicago, and two from San Francisco. All told, there will be 150 buspreneurs, and all have the same marching orders--code and design like crazy, play well with others, and build a start-up from the ground up. In two sleepless days. The best team will claim glory and possible future funding when everyone hits Austin.I've been invited to get on board a San Francisco bus, so for the next two days, I'll have pen and paper, camera, andiPad in hand, and I'll be blogging regularly from the road, bringing you the color of what it's like to travel halfway across the country with a coach full of buspreneurs, all of whom will be hacking and coding in the hopes of being crowned the best of the best. Before those who will be vying for that title were selected, they first had to fill out an application--and even be vouched for first. They were tasked with telling the organizers "why you think you're the most scrappy hacker, do-er, thinker, designer, or connector, and how that's going to help you go toe-to-toe with some of the best minds in start-ups."A tall order, indeed.Play with the Silicon Valley big boysThe Startup Bus is the brainchild of Australian entrepreneur Elias Bizannes. Having moved to San Francisco to try to play with Silicon Valley's big boys after having been a big fish in the small pond of Down Under tech business, Bizannes created the Startup Bus and took his first group of buspreneurs to Austin last year. "It's about developing the people in a contained environment that mimics a real start-up situation with constraints," Bizannes said, "to get people to focus on what's important...For Startup Bus, we're trying to develop the entrepreneurial potential of people by helping them develop their experience, network, skills, and confidence. What we are really trying to do is build a community where the Startup Bus experience is simply the initiation rite into that community...a closed community where job and partnership opportunities can be shared, co-founders can be met, and ideas can be shared--in an environment where everyone can be vetted, trusted, and accessible."And this is no lark. Out of the mess of empty soda cans, chip bags, and coffee cups that hit Austin last year, some real start-up success emerged. Bizannes said one team's start-up ended up getting $1 million in funding, while the team that was chosen as the winner on last year's bus was offered a spot in The Capital Factory's early stage start-up acceleration and mentorship program. With last year's fruitful first effort, Bizannes knew he had to step it up a notch for SXSW 2011. And that's why he, along with the help of a team of "conductors," has put together the fleet of buses coming from five cities this year. All told, there were more than 1,000 applicants, out of which 150 were eventually given slots on board. "People were selected at the discretion of the conductors for their bus," explained Brandon Leonardo, who is running one of the San Francisco buses. "Conductors went through every application and selected the ones that looked promising. The application was just a wide-open text field, which let applicants express themselves however they wanted. Some applicants wrote one-liners, and others wrote essays. One wrote his application as a functioning Python program."Continued Leonardo, "Why people were selected is more difficult to answer. Each conductor has their own biases about what makes a great buspreneur, so each bus will reflect that and have its own flavor. For San Francisco...there wasn't a specific 'person' we were looking for. We just looked for people who were awesome. We have everyone from executives at tech-companies all the way to college students riding the bus. We definitely tried to get the right mix of developers, designers, and business people though."And there's a meta element to all this as well. Once the buses hit the pavement, a Startup Bus stock market game will begin. Though that part of the project is still in development, Bizannes explained to me that "It's a game where all the start-ups are listed on a stock market and their share price increases through a combination of milestones that the teams achieve and actions that players--i.e. people not on the bus--perform.What that indicates, of course, is that in addition to having a few reporters scattered among the buses, the Startup Bus organizers have arranged to ensure that just about everything that happens onboard is posted online--be it a blog post by a team member, a tweet, a video, or a photo--and geotagged so that the viewing public can follow along more or less in real time. 'The cards are dealt on the bus'As a part of the project, albeit not someone who will join one of the teams, I've been on some of the e-mail lists that have sprung up around Startup Bus in recent days. Lest anyone think that these hackers are waiting until they get on the bus and are assigned to teams before digging into the work at hand, you should know that these are people who wasted no time in diving in with all kinds of ideas about the types of applications they would like to spend their time on the bus working on.Ideas ranged from tools to help frequent fliers to systems for analyzing the sentiment or mood of conference audience members to a TV channel that would only broadcast videos shared by friends, and more. Whether any of these ideas will be the teams' focus won't be known until the doors shut and the wheels roll. But as an observer, I feel confident that those on my bus won't wait until we clear the San Francisco city limits before the work begins. Their excitement and commitment to the project and soon-to-be teammates was nearly bursting out of my in-box."The cards are dealt on the bus," wrote Jonas Huckestein, one of the conductors, to the e-mail list. "Last year, quite a few of the pitched ideas were completely spontaneous. The best part about this mailing list is that everyone can get really pumped up about the [trip]. Even the people that aren't participating [in pre-trip discussions] are hopefully getting psyched already."Please stay tuned for complete coverage of the San Francisco Startup Bus, which will surely be the best of them all. Go team!Update at 7:50 a.m. PT: In the end, six buses left from five cities.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Microsoft)Contrary to last month when Microsoft plugged 22 holes on Patch Tuesday, only four holes will be fixed in the company's monthly security update roundup next week. There will be three bulletins, one of them rated "critical" for Microsoft Windows and the other two rated "important" and affecting Windows and Office, according to the preview advisory released today. While they are few in number, they are not to be ignored. They all involve remote code execution, which means an attacker could force code to run on a target's machine and could lead to a complete takeover of the computer. "The upcoming Patch Tuesday includes a fix for a DLL (dynamic-link library) hijacking vulnerability in the Microsoft Groove application," said HD Moore, chief security officer at Rapid7 and chief architect at Metasploit. "This was one of the hundreds of flaws discovered last year by both Rapid7 and another security firm. I am glad to see that Microsoft is making progress on these vulnerabilities and continuing to fix affected applications."

0 Vote(s)

&34'He&39's gettin&39' killed out there!&34'&34'No, he&39's gettin&39' mad!&34'(Credit:Screenshot by Rick Broida)I've always been a fan of the Fight Night series of console games, so I couldn't wait to strap on the virtual mitts for EA's new Fight Night Champion foriPhone. After going a few rounds with Ali, Tyson, and 18 other boxing legends, I can safely say this: the game lives up to the Fight Night name.Which is to say, it's fun but flawed. Fortunately, it's roughly a 90/10 split between the two. Anyone familiar with the console versions is sure to have a ball with this one.The app probably comes closest (in gameplay, not graphics) to Fight Night 4. It gives you 20 famous boxers (and two from "the console storyline," to quote EA) to fight as and against, but you can also create your own character and build a career. This is no arcade-style boxing game a la Beast Boxing 3D--there's real depth here. Your character actually ages and faces eventual retirement. As with its console counterparts, half the battle in Fight Night Champion is learning the controls. EA did a commendable job leveraging the touch screen, with actions that logically correspond to moves: tap to jab, swipe sideways to throw a hook, swipe up for an uppercut, tap and hold both thumbs to block, and so on.But there's a lot to remember, so give yourself some time to learn everything. It took me three or four matches before I felt like I'd mastered the controls. And even now there's one area that gives me trouble: movement. You move your boxer by tilting your iPhone, and I find it really hard to multitask that alongside the various screen controls. As for the actual gameplay, it's fast and furious, though I do have one gripe: when you block or slip a punch, there seems to be some lag before you can answer it. What's the point of good defense if you can't take advantage of itAlso, the game crashed the first time I ran it. After resetting my iPhone, it worked--but this time with no audio. (Awesome crowd noises and ringside commentary accompany each bout.) Eventually it ran properly, but obviously EA has some bugs to iron out.I wasn't able to test Fight Night Champion's multiplayer modes, which support head-to-head boxing over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. (Note: multiplayer requires a third- or fourth-geniPod or iPhone.) In an ideal world, EA would add online multiplayer, as all the Fight Night games are best when played against other humans.A few minor gripes aside, this is my favorite iPhone fighting game to date. All that's missing is aniPad version.

0 Vote(s)

If you see this on your Mac, beware.(Credit:Sophos)A new Trojan has cropped up and it's targetingMac OS X users, one security firm says.According to Sophos, the Trojan, called "BlackHole RAT" by its author and "MusMinim" by the security firm, is a variant of the Remote Access Trojan on Windows. The author of the Trojan says the malware is not yet completed, but it already does some annoying things.Overall, Sophos believes that the prevalence of the Trojan is relatively low. The malware can be removed by using antivirus software. If a Mac becomes infected, the Trojan places text files on the desktop, puts the computer to sleep, commands it to restart or shutdown, and runs "arbitrary shell commands," Sophos says. It also loads a phishing window to get users to input their administrator password. When a full-screen window pops up forcing users to restart their computer, a rather disconcerting message is displayed."I am a Trojan Horse, so I have infected your Mac Computer," says the text in the Trojan, according to Sophos. "I know, most people think Macs can't be infected, but look, you ARE Infected! I have full controll (sic) over your Computer and I can do everything I want, and you can do nothing to prevent it."So, Im a very new Virus, under Development, so there will be much more functions when I'm finished," the text continues. The text in the Trojan will surely fuel the long-running debate over whether Mac OS X really is more secure than Windows. Those in the Apple camp point to the numerous Windows security issues that have broken out over the years, compared to the few on Mac OS X, to try and prove that Apple's platform is more secure. Those in the Windows camp believe security is a money game, and malicious hackers have more revenue to generate by targeting all the Windows users in the world, rather than the smaller number of Mac OS X users. It's simply that hackers have ignored Mac OS X, they say.Sophos says that BlackHole RAT infects computers through downloads over the Web. It might also find its way to the user's Mac through "a vulnerability in your browser, plugins, and other applications."

0 Vote(s)

Nokia stalwart Symbian isn't quite making its exit yet even though the world's largest phone maker is switching to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 as its primary smartphone platform. The Nokia E7 smartphone(Credit:Nokia) "Just because we're changing our direction in terms of smartphone platform, it doesn't mean that the existing platform is completely broken," said Vlasta Berka, general manager for Nokia Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei, at the launch of the E7 smartphone in Singapore today. "We still have obligations to our users, developers, business partners, and customers." According to Nokia, there are currently 200 million Symbian users around the world. The Finnish outfit said it expects to sell about 150 million Symbian devices going forward. "Symbian is here to stay. Symbian will still be around, but it's just going to go somewhere around the corner," Berka added. The latest E7 smartphone features a 4-inch AMOLED display, physical QWERTY keyboard, 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, 16GB of onboard memory and a suite of enterprise solutions. It retails at S$989 ($774) in Singapore. Berka also tried to allay fears that Nokia will cease support for the Symbian platform. He said over 50 improvements, from visual to performance enhancements, will be rolled out for the rest of this year. Last week, Nokia's Chief Executive Stephen Elop noted that the Qt development environment that is used for Symbian devices would not be usable onWindows Phone 7 applications. He said this was to ensure that differing platforms don't confuse developers or consumers. According to Gartner, Symbian's market share dropped from 46.9 percent in 2009 to 37.6 percent in 2010.
Nokia and Microsoft plan a &34'third ecosystem,&34' an alliance that touches all parts of the mobile phone business.(Credit:Nokia)Microsoft and Nokia announced a broad mobile phone partnership today that joins two powerful but lagging companies into mutually reliant allies in the mobile phone market. As expected, Nokia plans to use Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system as part of a plan to recover from competitive failings detailed in Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop's "burning platform" memo. But it's deeper than just an agreement to install the OS on Nokia's phones. Instead, the companies call it an attempt to build a "third ecosystem," acknowledging that competing with Apple's iOS and Google's Android involves a partnership that must encompass phones, developers, mobile services, partnerships with carriers, and app stores to distribute software.Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, left, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer explained their company&39's new tight alliance for mobile phones at an analyst and strategy meeting in London.(Credit:screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET)"There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them. There will be challenges. We will overcome them. Success requires speed. We will be swift," Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a boldly worded open letter. "Together, we see the opportunity, and we have the will, the resources and the drive to succeed."The companies will cooperate tightly under an agreement the companies just describe so far as proposed, not final. Under the deal,Windows Phone 7 would become Nokia's "principal" operating system, and Nokia would help Microsoft develop it and ensure a broad range of phones using it are available globally.Nokia will use many Microsoft online services, many of which trail Google rivals, such as Bing for search and maps and AdCenter for advertisements. When it comes to the sales part of the ecosystem, each company brings something to the deal. Microsoft phones will be able to link up with Nokia's agreements for carrier billing--a popular option in parts of the world where credit cards are less common. And Nokia will fold its own app store into the Microsoft Marketplace.Elop the optimistIn a press conference today, Elop and Ballmer touted the alliance as good for both companies' aspirations."A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, but an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty," Elop said, quoting England's historic prime minister Winston Churchill as he spoke in London. "I am an optimist."It's not immediately clear what needs to be done to make the deal final' details "specific details of the deal are being worked out," the companies said.Nokia, once the dominant power of the mobile phone industry, has ceded the smartphone initiative to Apple'siPhone and Google's Android, and Elop believes Nokia's own Symbian and MeeGo operating systems aren't competitive. Microsoft has tried for years to penetrate the mobile phone market, and although it now has a credible option with Windows Phone 7, it trails Android when it comes to developer interest and the breadth of phones available. The two companies can expect their combined might will be more convincing for software authors debating whether they need to bring their apps to yet another ecosystem. But it's not yet clear how the alliance will extend to another hot new market, tablets, where Microsoft prefers Windows instead of the Windows Phone operating system. In contrast, iOS and Android developers enjoy the same mobile operating system on phones and tablets. An end for Symbian, MeeGoThe partnership means a gradual end for both Symbian and MeeGo, Nokia's mainstream and next-generation smartphone operating systems, respectively. Symbian will be gradually phased out in favor of Windows Phone, though Nokia expects to ship 150 million more Symbian phones in the meantime. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop(Credit:Nokia) And although Nokia will ship a single MeeGo-based smartphone later this year, Elop consigned it to near-oblivion by calling it merely "an opportunity to learn." MeeGo engineers will "change focus into exploration" of future devices and user services.Nokia seriously considered using Google's Android operating system, but feared it would ultimately be a boon for Google and a bane for Nokia, Elop said."We would have difficulties differentiating within that ecosystem," Elop said. Joining the Android world would make it even bigger, "with prices, profits, and everything being pushed down, and value moving to Google."Nokia cost-cuttingAlong with Nokia's new operating system strategy come major internal changes. Leadership in the United States, a large market now awakened to smartphones but where Nokia trails particularly badly, is being replaced. Bureaucracy will be cut. Research and development costs will be cut but R&D will become more productive. And there will be substantial layoffs, in Finland and elsewhere, Elop said, though the company will not move headquarters anywhere else."Already evolving rapidly at Nokia is a change in attitude and behavior" that shows "the fighting spirit of Nokia worldwide and the fighting spirit of the Finnish people," Elop said. In communicating with employees about the change, including an company-wide message earlier this morning, he added, "We've been vocal and transparent about the challenge. I think it's having a positive effect."Nokia will pay Microsoft royalties for use of its operating system, but apparently money will likely flow the other way, too, Ballmer and Elop said."We have different forms of value transfer in different directions," Elop said. "We have new opportunities that come from advertising and new forms of monetization.""We the ability to activate users and put them in a position to be more effective in what we call local commerce," added Ballmer. "Nokia has not just got mapping but other assets that we will import, if you will. There are a set of financial considerations for that as well." Nokia is touting its Microsoft alliance on its Web page.(Credit:Nokia) Elop and Ballmer detailed their proposal immediately before the vast Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, where a large number of new Android phones and tablets can be expected. It's uncertain what effect the alliance will have. Microsoft has had strong operating system partnerships with multiple competing PC makers, but the Nokia alliance, with mutually developed products and shared road maps, appears much deeper than the average relationship Microsoft has with hardware makers. That could encourage those who've made strong Android commitments--HTC, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics, Samsung, and more--to double down. After all, they're all enjoying a period of relative freedom with Nokia in its present relatively uncompetitive state, and strongly pushing Windows Phone products arguably would be abetting the enemy.Although the alliance is nonexclusive, Nokia clearly is becoming the premier Windows Phone partner. "There are things we are planning to do with Nokia that are unique," Ballmer said. The announcement was accompanied by a YouTube video featuring Microsoft and Nokia's chief executives praising the deal."Today, Nokia and Microsoft intend to enter into a strategic alliance," Elop said in the video, a precursor of a turnaround plan he's set to detail later today at an analyst conference in London. "Together, we will bring consumers a new mobile experience, with stellar hardware, innovative software, and great services. We will create opportunities beyond anything that currently exists."Ballmer said the partnership "brings the brands mobile consumers want, like Bing, Office, and of course Xbox Live." Updated several times, most recently at 3:18 a.m. PT with further details of the partnership..

0 Vote(s)

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology in Darmstadt, Germany, have found a way to steal passwords found in theApple iPhone's keychain services within six minutes. In order to steal passwords, the researchers said, the attacker must have have the actual, physical iPhone in hand--this isn't a remote maneuver. First, the attacker has to jailbreak the iPhone, and from there then must install an SSH server on the smartphone to be able to run unrestricted programs. The researchers also created a "keychain access script" that they then copied to the iPhone. After executing that script, they found that they were able to decrypt and see some passwords saved in the keychain.Over the past year, several iPhone exploits have been revealed by researchers around the world, including some that attack vulnerabilities in the mobile Safari browser. But at least so far, the issues have affected users who jailbreak their own devices. Even in the Fraunhofer Institute's case, a non-jailbroken iPhone will not reveal keychain passwords. Jailbreaking is the process of bypassing the restrictions that Apple sets up to keep users from tinkering with the device's underlying system software.Researchers said that this latest issue has to do with how iOS handles encryption--namely, that "encryption is independent of the personal password to protect access to the device properly." In other words, even if a user protects access to the iPhone--or any other iOS-based device--with a passcode, it won't be enough to stop hackers from using this method to access saved passwords in the keychain. It should be noted that the proof-of-concept maneuver would not reveal passwords for Web sites. Services like Gmail, AOL Mail, Yahoo Mail, and others with "protected" passwords "were available to the script only after entering the passcode to unlock the device, which by assumption, should not be possible for an attacker," the researchers noted. But the folks at Fraunhofer Institute don't necessarily believe that iPhone owners should assume that they will be safe if they don't jailbreak their iPhones. In their scenario, the researchers assumed that the iPhone was stolen and the person who took it knew how to jailbreak the device and create and run scripts. They said in their evaluation of their proof-of-concept that the difficulty level of exploiting the vulnerability is "low.""Owners of a lost or stolen iOS device should therefore quickly initiate a change of all stored passwords," the researchers wrote in their report. "Additionally, this should be also done for accounts notstored on the device but which might have equal or similar passwords, as an attacker might try out revealed passwords against the full list of known accounts."Malicious hackers are increasingly turning towardsthe mobile market to target unsuspecting victims.Earlier this week, security firm McAfee revealed that mobile malware threats were up 46 percent last year. The company said that it expects "cybercriminal activity" in the mobile market to surge in 2011.

0 Vote(s)

Customers registered to buy a Nissan Leaf electriccar will take delivery before summer is over, the carmaker said yesterday.Nissan delivered fewer than 20 Leaf cars in the first month of sales in December and another 89 in January. The company has had to assuage customers who thought they would be riding in an electric car by now.Nissan's U.S. sales chief Brian Carolin said yesterday that increased production in Japan will clear the bottleneck."We're now in the process of ramping up. Production is going to be peaking up in March and April, so we're pretty confident we are going to satisfy all of the orders we are going to get" by the end of summer.Nissan took 20,000 reservations for the Leaf as of last September. To secure a reservation, each customer put up a refundable $99 depositNissan Leaf(Credit:Nissan)So far, about 40 percent of those with reservations have carried through and bought a car, which would imply the sale of about 8,000 cars.Carolin said that 40 percent purchase rate is likely to drop, but he cannot be sure. The number of people showing initial interest is as high as 270,000, Carolin said.Once the preorders are taken care of, a similar sign-up process will take place. But Carolin said he doesn't know when that will happen. So far, almost all of the Leaf cars sold have been delivered in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, he said. Nissan will expand sales after getting a foothold in the West."With a car so novel, we want to make sure that these people are happy and become advocates for the brand," he told Reuters on the sidelines of the National Automobile Dealers Association annual convention. The Leaf gets up to 100 miles on a full charge, according to California regulators. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says its range is 73 miles.Carolin said there are too few in the hands of customers to determine the result of real-life driving. The Chevy Volt is out-selling Leaf by a wide margin so far, but Carolin said the Leaf and the Volt are not competing against one another because they are vastly different vehicles, although many consumers compare the two."We don't have a tailpipe," he said, referring to the fact that Volt is more like a plug-in hybrid than a fully electric car. "I don't see that we are in a race with Volt."Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited.
Investment in clean-technology companies rose in the U.S. last year, garnering $3.98 billion in venture capital, according to a report released yesterday by the accounting firm Ernst &amp' Young. The change represents an 8 percent increase in investment overall, but there was also a major shift in when companies received funding. "The share of investment dollars going to second rounds increased from 18% in 2009 to 26% in 2010. Later stage deals received $2.37 billion or 62% of the money invested in this period," according to the report. Of that $4 billion, $1.32 billion went to energy and electricity generation'$1.58 billion went to solar' and $1.24 billion went to "industry products and services," which Ernst &amp' Young says includes agriculture, construction, consumer products, materials, and transportation. The $1.58 billion in solar investment for 2010 represented a 77 percent increase compared with the previous year. The report notes that the change in investment in U.S. clean-tech projects overall is related to three major factors."In comparison to the early days of clean tech, the 2010 US VC investment results reflect a turning point in the industry due to improving credit and capital markets, the deployment of stimulus spending and increasing corporate clean tech adoption," Jay Spencer, Americas Cleantech Director at Ernst &amp' Young, said in a statement. The report also broke down its investment analysis by area of the country. California got the most clean-tech funding out of any state. California together with the Pacific Northwest, and the Mountain region collectively scored about $2.8 billion in clean-tech venture capital funding in 2010. The Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and South meanwhile eked out a collective total of about $626 million. As for the future of clean-tech investing, the Ernst & Young report noted two possible boons that might affect the coming year. California's landmark law requiring utilities to generate 33 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020 remains in effect, and the federal government's $858 billion tax cut bill extended renewable-energy projects grants for another year.

0 Vote(s)

Windows Live Messenger working with Facebook(Credit:Microsoft)Windows Live Messenger is seeing its integration with Facebook chat grow rapidly.Microsoft announced yesterday in a blog post that close to 18 million people have "connected" Facebook chat to Messenger since August, when it became possible to do so. And those folks have now accumulated more than 2.8 billion minutes of Facebook chat. All told, there have been 440 million chat sessions between Messenger and Facebook in less than six months, Microsoft said.Microsoft, which owns a small slice of Facebook, became the first instant-messaging provider to allow its users to chat with friends on Facebook from a third-party platform with the launch of the feature in mid-August. Just three months later, Microsoft announced that 1.5 billion minutes of Facebook chatting had taken place with Windows Live Messenger.Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger app for Facebook currently has in excess of 15.77 million monthly active users. According to third-party app tracking service AppData, the number of daily active users is a little closer to 13 million, making it the No. 3 top app on the social network, third only to Zynga's Cityville and Farmville.Microsoft doesn't cater only to Facebook users. The company also announced yesterday that connections between Messenger and LinkedIn have doubled since the platform's last update, while MySpace and YouTube connections have grown nearly 50 percent.Updated at 9:51 a.m. PTto include more details.

0 Vote(s)

AT&T has officially opened its first Foundry facility aimed at increasing innovation in the mobile market. One of three such planned facilities around the globe, this one is in Plano, Texas, the company announced today. The center will facilitate the company and mobile developers working together to "speed the pace of innovation to consumers and enterprises," the carrier said. The center is opening with expected development in rich media, HTML5, and location-based applications, among other areas.Ultimately, AT&T's goal with its innovation centers is to get projects that might improve the use of mobile technology to the market three times faster than they would normally get there, AT&T's chief technology officer John Donovan said in a statement. Working at AT&T's innovation center could be a boon for developers. A description of the program on AT&T's Web site says developers need only to "bring the idea." AT&T, on the other hand, will deliver resources to help developers bring that idea to the market. The wireless carrier said that developers will have "access to AT&T network capabilities and test beds, in addition to technology experts and project coaches." The center is also "an LTE test environment," the company said.Verizon also has an LTE Innovation Center. The company's center, which is located in Waltham, Massachusetts, is open for designers and developers that want to use Verizon's high-speed network to bring connectivity to devices that otherwise wouldn't have it. The Web site for Verizon's center specifically cites the use of 4G connectivity in vehicles, medical devices, and home appliances.Like Verizon's program, AT&T requires developers to apply to use the centers. The company holds "speed date" reviews of proposals to determine if an idea would be a good fit for what it's trying to accomplish with its service. AT&T said it has already held several dates with developers and plans to "hold 400 of the fast-pitch sessions in locations across the globe this year."AT&T's desire to be picky makes sense--the Foundry innovation centers aren't cheap. The carrier said today that total investment in the centers is $70 million.Sometime this spring, AT&T expects it will open its next innovation center in Ra'anana, Israel. A Palo Alto, Calif., center is scheduled to open in the fall.

0 Vote(s)

Energy-efficiency company Comverge is getting less picky about whether the hardware it works with is an electric vehicle or an air conditioner.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)The company today is expected to announce that the latest version of its software can work with the OnStar vehicle communications system and wireless thermostats that control air conditioners from Carrier.Comverge's specialty is demand response, where its software can turn down power use at multiple locations during peak times. Lowering energy use on the grid is an effective way for utilities to meet energy demand without having to turn on costly and polluting peak-time power plants. Consumers who sign on for utility demand response programs get some sort of rebate or lower electricity rate. Right now, much of Comverge's residential business is based around air conditioner controllers, small devices that can connect to Comverge's data centers and control an air conditioner. To lighten the load on the grid at peak times, a controller cycles the air conditioner compressor to raise the temperature one or two degrees, explained Comverge CEO R. Blake Young. Pool pumps are another commonly controlled device. The latest version of its IntelliSource software can work with Zigbee-compatible wireless thermostats, which work with Carrier air conditioners. Similarly, the company will show at the DistribuTech utility conference that its software can tie into the OnStar system for managing when an electric vehicle is charged. The Chevy Volt is onecar that will use OnStar to get utility rate information and let consumers manage charge times. The software has also been enhanced to better tie into utilities' back-end software systems. For example, it has better tools for verifying and measuring demand-side power reductions.Inside a power grid control room (photos) Grid operators and utilities are increasingly using demand response as a way to plan for grid capacity. Rather than build new power plants to add generation as overall demand grows, utilities contract with demand-response providers and reduce demand when needed."This past year we saw more events over more consecutive days than we've seen over the history of the programs we've run," Blake said. "The peaks are happening more often for longer periods of time, so we've become a very critical part of the entire energy mix."Comverge manages thousands of megawatts now, with about 60 percent in the residential area, but last year saw rapid growth in the commercial and industrial area, Blake said.

0 Vote(s)

HP Chairman Ray Lane.(Credit:Hewlett Packard)Just a few months removed from the Mark Hurd scandal, Hewlett-Packard's board of directors is getting a makeover.HP said today that it is replacing four board members and adding an additional seat. Out are Joel Hyatt, John Joyce, Robert Ryan, and Lucille Salhany. In are newcomers Shumeet Banerji, CEO of Booz & Company' Gary Reiner, former CIO at GE' Patricia Russo, former CEO of Alcatel-Lucent' Dominique Senequier, CEO of AXA Private Equity' and Meg Whitman, former president and CEO of eBay and recent California gubernatorial candidate. That brings the HP board seat count to 13, up from 12.All five new directors also will stand for re-election at HP's next annual meeting in March."The addition of these new directors will further diversify the outstanding talents and wide-ranging experience that our directors already bring to HP," Ray Lane, HP's non-executive chairman of the board of directors, said in a statement.Lane also thanked the four retiring members, noting that they "worked tirelessly and effectively to navigate HP through a difficult leadership change in the last six months."Former lead independent director of the board Ryan called it "a great privilege to serve on the HP board and see this outstanding company build on its legacy as a technology leader and innovator." He also expressed confidence in new CEO Leo Apotheker and Lane. "HP has a strong leadership team in place to continue moving the company forward," he said. The timing of the replacement seems tied to an investigation HP is ready to start into the circumstances surrounding former CEO Hurd's resignation from the company. Hurd, who is now president of HP rival Oracle, resigned as chief executive in August after sexual harassment allegations led to an inquiry that found he had misreported his expenses to the company.Last night, it was reported that HP wants this investigation to be "independent" and led by a committee of outside attorneys and board members who joined the Silicon Valley giant after Hurd's departure. As of last night, that meant only two board members qualified: Apotheker and Lane. The new slate of directors would mean all of them could qualify to participate in the investigation. The remaining six incumbents would not: Marc Andreessen, Lawrence T. Babbio Jr., Sari M. Baldauf, Rajiv L. Gupta, John H. Hammergren, and G. Kennedy Thompson.Adding a handful of new faces is also a way for Apotheker, who's still in the process of making himself at home at HP, to add a some new blood and perhaps sever some old alliances. Until today, some of the directors were approaching a decade on the board. Salhany was named a director in 2002, Ryan in 2004, and Joyce and Hyatt in 2007. The longest-serving remaining incumbents have been on the board since 2005, when Hurd first came to HP. In an interview on CNBC today, Lane said the departures were "voluntary" and unrelated to Hurd's ousting last summer. The new board members won't have much time to get comfortable in their new seats before jumping into action. Besides its own investigation, HP is facing shareholder lawsuits over the severance package Hurd received upon his departure. The Securities and Exchange Commission is also poking around, asking questions about Hurd's alleged revelation of an impending purchase of Electronic Data Systems to a former contractor months before it was announced to the public. This post was updated several times, most recently at 2:34 p.m. PT.

0 Vote(s)

He can remember it for you wholesale: The new Dick droid has conversational memory.(Credit:Hanson Robotics)For a long-lost android, Philip K. Dick looks pretty good--like he's been living it up in Margaritaville. The acclaimed author of science fiction classics "The Man in the High Castle" and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" died in 1982, but this is his second resurrection in robot form. Hardware for the android was completed last year, and software is still being developed. It's the handiwork of Hanson Robotics, led by Texas-based roboticist David Hanson. He and collaborators first showed off the talking robot head at NextFest back in 2005. It later vanished. The author lived in Orange County, last known location of the lost robot head. (Credit:Wikipedia)"It was tragic when the first robot was lost--it broke my heart," Hanson said in an interview with Crave. "It was a tool for realizing sentient, compassionate machines."He's embarrassed to admit that he forgot the head on a San Francisco-bound plane. Before it disappeared for good, it was on a flight bound for Orange County, Calif.--Dick's home. Maybe that wasn't a mere coincidence. After all, the head had some artificial intelligence. Built at a cost of some $50,000, the new replicant is even smarter. It can carry on conversations with users in a more convincing, complex fashion. Judging by the video below, though, it doesn't look like it could pass a Voight-Kampff test. Still, it can remember what has been said instead of just responding to words with a quote from Dick's works. "It has better awareness and it's able to make logical deductions about itself and its internal state," Hanson said. "There are more AI features now." The bearded bot was rebuilt in collaboration with Dutch public broadcaster VPRO, which produced a documentary last year entitled "The Owl in Daylight" after an unfinished novel by the author, whose works are behind iconic science fiction films such as "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall." The new bust incorporates 32 low-power electric motors and skin called Frubber that is more expressive and lifelike. The redux Dick uses the same technology that went into Hanson's Einstein head, which has graced the top of a Korean humanoid robot and learned facial expressions at the University of California at San Diego. Hanson says he wants to get the reborn Dick android to walk, but meanwhile he's using it as a tool for AI and cognitive sciences research, undertaken in collaboration with staff at his firm and university scientists. He's working on scientific papers related to the project. "We've dedicated the robot to research with a nonprofit called the Apollo Mind Initiative, which is dedicated to the idea of achieving greater than human level genius in the next 10 years." More human than human, indeed.

0 Vote(s)

If you happen to have your preciousiPhone stolen from you in the broadness of daylight, you might wish that you might be helped in your quest for justice by something fast and airborne. One distressed iPhone owner in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, enjoyed just such fortune after her was iPhone stolen in a hospital.According to the Age, the alleged perpetrator, a 16-year-old, sped away with the iPhone on a bike. Which was, coincidentally, also allegedly purloined illegally from its owner.Steal one, and the flying squad may give chase.(Credit:CC Gonzalo Baeza Hernandez/Flickr)It just so happened that the police had a helicopter flying around in the vicinity. The Age doesn't record what the chopper might have been doing up there. Perhaps there just isn't enough crime in Melbourne, so the pilot flew out for a stroll and a little lunch. However, once he was told that the iPhone was equipped with a GPS app, the pilot gave flying chase.I imagine it is a little easier chasing a boy on a bike than a former USC running back in a Ford Bronco. So it is unsurprising the teen hopped off the bike and onto a tram.Sadly for him, but happily for the iPhone owner, the police are very well aware of tram routes, and he was arrested. Ill luck, like trams, often comes in multiples. So who can be astonished that police also reportedly found a little marijuana on his personI see a future in which little remote-controlled planes, armed with Spider-Man-like webs, will be sent into the sky every time a miscreant dares to thieve away the lifeblood that is an iPhone.

0 Vote(s)

If you think mobile applications are popular now, a new report predicts you haven't seen anything yet. This year, consumers worldwide will have downloaded 10.9 billion mobile apps, according to a report from IDC released today. But that figure will pale in comparison to how many apps users download in 2014.By that time, IDC believes 76.9 billion mobile apps will be downloaded in a single year. Given that popularity, IDC said that mobile-app revenue around the world could surpass $35 billion in 2014, up from an estimated $4.9 billion this year.Going forward, IDC said that it believes "appification" of a user's personal and professional life will only continue."Mobile app developers will 'appify' just about every interaction you can think of in your physical and digital worlds," Scott Ellison, vice president of IDC's Mobile and Wireless research, said in a statement. "The extension of mobile apps to every aspect of our personal and business lives will be one of the hallmarks of the new decade with enormous opportunities for virtually every business sector."Evidently, Angry Birds creator Rovio sees that potential for future growth, as well. The company announced last week that it would be launching a new in-app payment system next year, called Bad Piggy Bank. It didn't divulge how it would share revenue with developers, but the company said that it would provide users with a one-tap purchase system that requires no credit card or registration. Instead, the consumer will be charged for the purchase on their monthly phone bill.Earlier this year, mobile-app store GetJar commissioned a study that offered up another rosy picture of the future of the mobile-apps business. The company found that total downloads could reach 50 billion in 2012, while revenue could climb to $17.5 billion that year.

0 Vote(s)

The Daily Show app looks great on the iPhone, but it&39's even better on an iPad, where it takes full advantage of the extra screen estate.(Credit:Screenshot by Rick Broida)I'm a huge, huge fan of "The Daily Show." It's the single funniest thing on TV, and Jon Stewart is perhaps the smartest guy ever to sit behind a talk-show desk. (The less said about his interviewing skills, however, the better.)Needless to say, it didn't take a lot of arm-twisting for me to grab the new The Daily Show app--especially considering that it's being offered free just for today. (I'm not sure what the price will be as of tomorrow, but we can look for clues in The Colbert Report's The Word, which costs $1.99.)&nbsp'The app offers a lot for rabid fans like me, starting with a shareable quote of the day (and accompanying show segment) for roughly the last eight weeks' worth of shows.Tap the Topics button and you'll see a spinning word cloud (or an alphabetical list if you switch views), with each item leading to handfuls--if not buckets--of clips related to that topic. These appear to date back as far as December, 2009--not the full archives by any stretch, but still plenty of stuff to watch.Thankfully, all videos are commercial-free, at least for the moment. All you see is a brief Capital One graphic before each clip. The Schedule button shows upcoming guests for at least the next few days, and the times each episode will re-air on Comedy Central the following day. (Wow, each one repeats four times. Who needs a DVR) You can set reminders (15, 30, or 60 minutes) for any selected airing. Finally, there's the Tweets button, which shows not only TheDailyShow and JonStewart hashtags, but also the tweets for the show itself and four correspondents (Aasif Mandvi, Olivia Munn, John Hodgman, and Kristen Schaal). What's missing Unfortunately, the one thing fans undoubtedly want most: full episodes. Great as it is to have access to complete segments (as opposed to, say, 30-second clips), it's not the same as being able to watch an episode start-to-finish.Maybe that will come. In the meantime, The Daily Show app is still a must-have for "The Daily Show" fans, and today's the day to get it--while it's free.

0 Vote(s)

Next week at the D Mobile technology conference, Real Networks will demonstrate its first new major consumer product in a long time, a cross-platform media management service. The as-yet unnamed product is in two parts: software that consumers run on their computers and mobile devices that will watch for new content they store on them' and a Web service that can collect that media and stream or load it to any of the devices the consumer owns.Real's new-since-January CEO Robert Kimball believes that this product will address a major pain point for consumers and bring Real back to the public eye after years of decline. But he was clear with me that Real's consumer-facing media player (remember that) accounts for less than a tenth of the company's business and that he doesn't expect a major boost from the new service. Currently, the bulk of Real's business is in its gaming platform, its licensing of technology, and, primarily (37 percent of revenues) the back-end and white-label service Real provides to wireless carriers. But even there, Real has a lot more potential than market: about 38 million mobile subscribers use Real-developed online services, out of a potential addressable market of 700 million people, Kimball says. Real Networks CEO Robert Kimball(Credit:Real Networks) Kimball says Real has no intention of competing with Apple to build a media store, even though it does provide media store technology and services to carriers that they pitch under their own brands. In fact, Kimball says, the media aggregation service will make iTunes and other media stores more valuable to consumers by enabling them to move their content around to all the devices they have, no matter what technology platforms they're using (except for all-Apple users' Kimball admits people who live completely in the Apple cocoon don't need an aggregator). The service will handle music, videos, and photos. It will respect digital rights and not enable streaming of protected content (in other words, movies and TV shows), but it will make it much easier to move music files and playlists between devices. The first version will focus on mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) and computers. Future versions may work with living-room devices like digital video recorders and game consoles. Also not in the launch version is support for users' subscriptions to streaming services like Netflix or Pandora. The service will work with media files you own, not rights to stream. Keeping in mind that we haven't yet had a demo of the product, it sounds like a reasonable and potentially useful product to help consumers tame their media archives, although with important gaps in coverage. It could, if Real sticks with it, bring the company back to public awareness. When I said to Kimball that there's a whole generation of technology users that have never heard of Real, he said, "I view that as a good thing, because we get a chance to make a first impression." It has in fact been that long since Real has been a major player (sorry) on the consumer's desktop. But without some potential for revenue generation (and by that I mean actually selling media, not pay-for-cloud-storage fees, which I don't think will add up), this is not going to move the needle much for Real's bottom line.Previously:RealNetworks plots cloud media management service early in 2011.RealNetworks: A tale of opportunities missed.

0 Vote(s)

AT&amp'T inadvertently confirms an upcoming Android smartphone.(Credit:Boy Genius Report)An AT&T Facebook account confirmed the existence of an upcoming Motorola handset yesterday, outing the Olympus for all to see.A Boy Genius Report reader asked the AT&T Share team whether he would be wise to wait on the Tegra-2-powered smartphone as he is eligible for an upgrade. The carrier's response, which was quickly pulled, was that the phone will be available in either December or January. Previous rumors suggested that the Olympus would arrive in early 2011, possibly in time for CES at the top of the year. I doubt that the phone will be readied by year's end, however, so expect to see it in January where it could make a bigger impact.Regardless of actual release date, it's refreshing to know that AT&T may be one of the first providers out of the gate with a next-generation Android handset. With a rumored screen size of around 4 inches and its dual cameras, the Motorola phone could easily be the carrier's top smartphone. Thus far, Motorola seems to be reserving its best Android handsets for Verizon's Droid lineup, leaving AT&T with devices like the Flipside and Flipout. And since we're on the subject, it's worth pointing out that Motorola is purported to be working on a very similar handset for Verizon. The Etna is expected to debut in February or March and is said to be 100 percent LTE compatible with Verizon's new network.

0 Vote(s)

Kinect, from Microsoft, has a wide range of uses. But Microsoft may not have imagined the motion-controller as a sex toy. Others have.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)You knew it was coming. It was inevitable. And, yes, I'm talking about Kinect sex. With almost any hot new tech toy, especially one with a heavy degree of interactivity--which Microsoft's motion-sensitive controller has in spades--someone is going to try to hack it and try to make it X-rated. The Kinect is no exception. To date, there are no overtly sexual Kinect games on the market, though the folks who put together Kinect MotionSwinger (pretty NSFW) would like you to believe--for a moment at least--otherwise. But that's nothing more than a joke concept for a Kinect sex game put together with some imagery from Second Life.Still, when it comes to finding ways to utilize new technology for, shall we say, lewd purposes, there are few people more qualified thank Kyle (qDot) Machulis, the dean of the underground sex-tech genre known as teledildonics. In a Sunday blog post titled "Kinect Sex--Because you knew I'd make this post sooner or later," Machulis finally brings his trained eye to the project that countless millions were surely waiting for him to get around to and evaluates the kink potential of the device Microsoft is hoping may breathe new life into itsXbox 360 video game console. The question, as Machulis delicately puts it, is "How can I [have sex]" using KinectAs he quickly points out, Kinect most likely wasn't designed for such a purpose, and though the device was made to recognize even minute movements by a person's body, it's geared to look for our larger limbs, like arms and legs."Microsoft put a ton of work into making the Kinect track the human body as a whole, so you can play games by jumping and running and generally acting the...fool and feel like you're in the game instead of just sad," Machulis wrote. "Genitalia, for the most part, are not a major geometric feature of the human body when taken in perspective of physical size....Neither are they normally used in the control of video games, be they rated [for all] or [for adults only]."Machulis said he experimented by waving a sex toy in front of a Kinect, and then by wagging his tongue around in front of it, and concluded that the graphics quality isn't very good, though the device was capable of picking up both the toy and his tongue. "In short, porn is about sex, but for many customers, it's also about being able to see the sex in a way that doesn't make you think, 'Wait, why does her arm detach completely when her [breast] is in front of it,'" Machulis wrote. "The pattern the Kinect uses to get depth data is made for picking up full bodies to control video games, and therefore isn't quite so good at picking up minutiae about those bodies."Yet, Machulis also points out that because the Kinect is both very good at picking up hand-based gestures and capable of identifying discrete body parts like "manbreasts" (see video below), there is the distinct possibility that the device could be used to digitize--albeit with less than ideal graphics quality--simulated sexual motions. Kinect Titty Tracker from Dan Wilcox on Vimeo."The Kinect alleviates the need for having hardware, because now as long as we have a shot of the 'action,' as it were, we can use that 'gesture' as a control," Machulis wrote. "Not only that, the gesture itself is the toy. Or you could employ a toy under the gesture."There are limits, of course. Without being too graphic, it seems that though presenting good quality imagery based on some hand-gesture-oriented sexual activity may currently be "out of the Kinect's normal operating procedure," Machulis suggested that "I'm sure we'll figure something out."More to the point, it appears Machulis is hoping that others who are into mashing up technology and sexuality will "prove me a sexual Luddite once again. At least I hope they will."

0 Vote(s)

The Sylvania LED designed for general lighting, which gives off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent and uses 12 watts.(Credit:Osram Sylvania)The battle to unseat the popular 60-watt incandescent bulbs with more efficient LEDs is moving to retail outlets.Osram Sylvania today said that home improvement store Lowes will carry Sylvania's general-purpose LED bulb, which gives off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb and uses 12 watts. The Ultra A-Line bulb will be available online this month and in all Lowe's stores by the second quarter of next year. The price will $39.98, according to Osram Sylvania. Home Depot is offering a 60-watt replacement LED from Philips for $39.97.LED bulbs in this category are significant because millions of 60-watt incandescents and equivalent compact florescent bulbs are sold every year. Also, these latest LEDs, which give off light more evenly the spotlight LEDs, are designed for general lighting, such as desk lamps and overhead fixtures. The Sylvania Ultra A-Line 12-watt LED, which is dimmable, gives off 810 lumens of light, slightly more than the competing bulb from Philips. The color temperature is 2,700 Kelvin, which means it will have yellow color similar to an incandescent. The color rendering index, a measurement of accuracy, is 90. The rated life is 25,000 hours.Osram Sylvania intends to make a brighter LED which would give off as much light as a 75-watt incandescent which will be available in 2011, according to a company representative.Lowe's already sells LEDs from Sylvania, including a 40-watt equivalent in the G25 globe shape for $30.87. In addition to making brighter lights, manufacturers are seeking to ramp up the volume of LED bulb production, which is expected to lower the price of general-purpose LED bulbs. Some lighting company executives forecast that within two years, LED bulbs in the 800 lumen category will cost less than $10. Updated at 10:06 a.m. PT with price and timing on follow-on bulb.

0 Vote(s)

Although October video game sales slid 4 percent, according to market research firm NPD, at least one company is happy with its performance on the month.Microsoft announced late yesterday that for the fifth-consecutive month, itsXbox 360 led thePlayStation 3 andNintendo Wii in overall sales. The company said it sold 325,000 Xbox 360 units in October, representing a 30 percent year-over-year gain. So far this year, Microsoft has enjoyed 34 percent year-to-date growth. It is worth noting, however, that Nintendo's DS had the highest hardware unit sales on the month, though neither NPD nor Nintendo revealed to reporters how many units were sold. Microsoft also performed quite well in software. Although 2K Sports' NBA 2K11 led in overall game sales, Microsoft-published Fable III tallied 580,000 unit sales on the month, grabbing the second spot in October. Microsoft also said it sold 315,000 Halo: Reach units on the month. Microsoft's sales figures were made available by the company itself. Last month, NPD announced that it would no longer share hardware or game unit sales each month, as it once did. The onus is now on hardware and software makers to reveal unit sales if they wish to do so.

0 Vote(s)

An upcoming Intel Atom chip may blunt the growth of tablets based on the widely used ARM processor--with the possible exception of Apple, according to an analyst at UBS Investment Research. Uche Orji of UBS made the comments today in a research note upgrading Intel's stock to a "buy." Windows tablets based on Intel's "Oak Trail" Atom chips could have a larger market impact than expected, Orji wrote. "While tablet forecasts for 2011 in excess of 50m (50 million) are not unreasonable (our Atmel touch controller forecasts infers a tablet market size of 56m), none of these forecasts are likely to fully incorporate the scenario of a significant counter-attack from a new generation of notebooks and x86-based tablets that could ultimately limit the growth of ARM-based tablets (at least those that are non-Apple)," Orji wrote. Apple's A4 processor, used in theiPad, is based on an ARM design. Orji is referring to future ARM-based tablets that use, for example, Qualcomm's dual-core Snapdragon chip and Nvidia's dual-core Tegra processor. Dell&39's Inspiron Duo tablet-Netbook hybrid uses a dual-core Atom processor.(Credit:James Martin)Ashok Kumar, managing director and analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, took a different tack in a research note last week, saying that Qualcomm has "secured major tablet wins with its third generation dual-core Snapdragon, MSM 8660." (See video of Qualcomm executive talking about the 8660.)Orji also had good things to say about Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge chip technology, due to appear in PCs by early next year. "As Intel drives ultra-low voltage versions of Sandy Bridge into ultrathin notebooks and its Oak Trail platform (we expect mainly) intoWindows 7 and MeeGo tablets as well as ultrathin netbooks, we believe there could be enough excitement around x86 processors in new form factors that help to mitigate the tablet threat," he wrote.

0 Vote(s)

Shown is a map of high-speed railroads currently under construction in the U.S., as well as corridors under development, and proposed lines under study.(Credit:Federal Railroad Administration)The U.S. government awarded $2.4 billion in funding last week to 54 railroad projects across 23 states in the U.S.This latest round of funding is in addition to the $8 billion that was awarded in January as part of the comprehensive public works project to construct the "first nationwide program of high-speed intercity passenger rail service."The funds are going toward new railroad lines and stations, as well as efforts to update and refurbish existing ones to coalesce with the high-speed plan announced in January as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.In this round of funding, Florida received $800 million to build a high-speed railroad connecting Tampa and Orlando with train speeds reaching up to 168 mph at some points along the route, making the trip under an hour compared with 90 minutes bycar. The state's ultimate plan is to extend the line from Orland down to Miami, according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).Iowa received $230 million to hook into a new intercity passenger service that would connect Iowa City to Chicago and points in between.California, known for its heavy traffic congestion, received $901 million, of which $715 million will be spent on a new high-speed railroad across its Central Valley. The state's ultimate goal is to have a high-speed passenger service reaching speeds of 220 mph at some points between San Francisco and Los Angeles that would run 2 hours 40 minutes compared with 6 hours by car, according to FRA statistics.Michigan received $161 million to build a high-speed railroad from Detroit to Chicago.Projects that received money in the January round of funding included those in North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Washington, D.C.In addition to the tracks being laid, funds have also been allocated to study the feasibility of building high-speed railroads between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Las Vegas and Phoenix, Kansas City and Oklahoma City, and Atlanta and Charlotte, to name a few. Both U.S. and foreign companies have been eligible to apply for the high-speed railroad funds, but to qualify will have to "establish or expand their base of operations in the United States if they are hired to build America's next generation high-speed rail lines."Jobs expected to grow out of the vast initiative include those in railroad planning, engineering, manufacturing, track-laying, maintenance, and operations. The U.S. has come late to the game of high-speed rail. The FRA's promise of trains that "will reach speeds of" 168 mph or 220 mph at certain points during a single train ride seems timid compared to the high-speed trains with continuous running speeds of 200 mph outside the U.S.Japan and Europe have long been using high-speed railroads to move their people and have achieved much faster speeds. In 2003 Japan's Maglev train did 361 mph, though it's up for debate if it qualifies as the world's fastest train since its electromagnetic technology allows it to hover without actually touching its rails. In 2007, the French-made V150 ran 357 mph and also claimed title to the fastest train in the world.Private industry has also been turning to railroads in recent years with IBM and Siemens each developing technology that's going to be applied to high-speed railroads under development in China.

0 Vote(s)

The Halloween season my be winding down, but that doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of scary laptops out there. Of course, the vast majority of laptops we review are pretty decent examples of technology. After all, there are only a handful of common components used in most systems, and things such as speed and battery life are, if not standardized, at least largely predictable based on the list of what's inside the box. That said, we occasionally run into a laptop that just rubs us the wrong way. Maybe it's a key missing feature, or terrible design, or an unusable touch pad--or sometimes products simply don't work as advertised. We've compiled our own list of the scariest laptops of 2010, the models that either had one or more frightening flaws, or else were just dogs. Some of these are bargain basement budget systems, but don't think we're just picking on laptops that are cheap. We love inexpensive laptops, but not ones that cut so many corners that they're not a bargain at any price. Peruse our list below, and feel free to weigh in via the comments section with your own picks. Laptop nightmares: Scary systems with fatal flaws (photos)

0 Vote(s)

The six-member, all-veteran crew of the shuttle Discovery flew to Florida today to await their blastoff Monday on a space station resupply mission that will be the orbiter's 39th and final mission.Arriving at the Florida spaceport after staggered flights from Houston aboard T-38 jets, commander Steven Lindsey, pilot Eric Boe, Nicole Stott, Michael Barratt, and spacewalkers Timothy Kopra and Alvin Drew touched down this afternoon.Astronaut Nicole Stott speaks to reporters at the shuttle runway. Her crewmates, left to right: Michael Barratt, Timothy Kopra, Alvin Drew, pilot Eric Boe, and commander Steven Lindsey.(Credit:William Harwood)"Weather permitting, if all goes well, we'll have a nice November 1 on-time launch," Lindsey told reporters at the Shuttle Landing Facility. "We're looking forward to it."Discovery's countdown to launch is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Liftoff from pad 39A is targeted for 4:40:27 p.m. Monday, the moment Earth's rotation is estimated to carry the pad into the plane of the space station's orbit."We were able to talk to our friends on the space station this morning and they have spent a lot of time getting everything ready up there for us," Barratt said. "We have a huge collection of hardware up there and I think we'll exceed a million pounds for the first time during our docked mission. We just want to give a nod to the program office that put the space station together and runs it. We're really looking forward to getting up there and doing our part to add to it yet again."The primary goals of the flight are to deliver a 21-foot-long cargo storage module, the last pressurized compartment NASA plans to launch to the station. The permanent multipurpose logistics module, or PMM, is loaded with 6,536 pounds of cargo, including an experimental humanoid robot known as Robonaut 2.Another 1,500 pounds of supplies and equipment are mounted in the shuttle's crew cabin, and an external storage platform carrying a spare set of folding radiator panels is mounted in the ship's cargo bay. The 8,161-pound storage platform and the radiator panels will be mounted on the space station's power truss."It's really great to be back here, this place brings smiles to all of our faces for sure," said Stott. "We're bringing up some pretty cool stuff. We've got a permanent logistics module that we'll be attaching and we have the ELC-4, which is basically an external carrier that will have some large spare parts for the station. So we really look forward to being able to put the station in the best possible configuration for future missions."Discovery's launch window extends through November 7.NASA, GM unveil Robonaut 2 (photos)

0 Vote(s)
