In the quest for better browser speed, Mozilla has begun work on newFirefox engines for running JavaScript programs and displaying graphics. The new JavaScript engine, including a compiler called IonMonkey, is designed to run Web-based programs faster and to impose less disruption during the pesky memory-scrubbing process called garbage collection. And the graphics engine, called Azure, is intended to get along better with Windows' graphics interfaces while still working with those ofMac OS X and Linux.Says Joe Drew, who's working on Azure:Firefox 4's graphics performance is great...We're not content with "great," though, and our investigations into how to make drawing even faster have revealed that some of our choices in Gecko's graphics engine aren't optimal for performance.Naturally, Azure is designed to improve the performance. It also lays the groundwork for future work in separating Mozilla processes into different memory compartments, a long-running project called Electrolysis. The compartmentalization has the potential to improve security and performance, but it requires extensive retooling of basic parts of the browser. The browser market has become hotly competitive, with Google's Chrome stealing away share of usage once held by Mozilla's Firefox and IE9 finally giving Microsoft a competitive browser again. Responding to the challenge, Mozilla has put Firefox on a Chrome-esque development fast track to try to get new features into people's hands faster. The next version, Firefox 5, is due June 21, according to release manager Christian Legnitto. But don't expect the JavaScript and graphics changes to arrive that soon."IonMonkey is currently in the design stages--David Anderson and I are studying the compiler literature and the competition and doing experiments to find out just what features IonMonkey needs. Coding is about to start," said David Mandelin, a Mozilla JavaScript engine programmer. Compilers handle the essential task of translating the programs a human wrote into the instructions a computer understands. The new JavaScript engine also is due to get a new debugging interface. That's potentially important: JavaScript programs are steadily increasing in sophistication and size, and tracking down why something isn't working is crucial for programmer productivity. And, more to the point, all the browser makers are trying furiously to court Web developers with features to make their lives easier. Web developers are the ones who ensure a Web site or Web application works on multiple browsers and takes advantages of new features.

0 Vote(s)

A rendering of Innowattech piezoelectric sensors installed under a highway.(Credit:Innowattech)It might seem a little ironic, but automotive traffic could be the next source of green energy. A bill for a pilot program that will harness road vibration and convert it to energy passed 6-1 in the California State Assembly's Natural Resources Committee yesterday. It will move to the Assembly Transportation Committee for voting next week. California Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) first introduced bill AB 306 in February. Piezoelectric generation captures energy thatcars, trains, or people generate as they move across surfaces and cause vibrations. These vibrations can be harnessed and converted to energy using piezoelectric materials underneath surfaces. Electricity stored in roadside batteries could power traffic signs and signals, or on a larger scale, be fed directly into the power grid. A .6 mile single-lane stretch of roadway can generate up to 44 megawatts of electricity in a year, enough to power 30,800 homes. And one of the good things about this energy strategy is that rush hour typically coincides with peak energy usage.Israel is already using piezoelectric generation on its highways, and Italy has plans to install the technology in a stretch of the Venice-to-Trieste Autostrada. Funding for this test project in Northern and Southern California would come from existing funds already set aside by California's Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program. Although a spokesperson familiar with the bill said the sensors built by Israeli technology company Innowattech or Michigan-based PowerLeap are inexpensive, no figures on the technology or installation cost could be given. However, a $50 billion backlog of road maintenance means there is ample opportunity to install piezoelectric sensors without needing to dig up roads. Determining whether or not it's cost effective to replace broken sensors before regularly schedule road maintenance is one of the pilot program's objectives.
A Solar Junction wafer of high-efficiency solar cells. Each individual chip can produce about 20 watts.(Credit:Solar Junction)Solar Junction, a Silicon Valley solar start-up, said today that its solar cell has been measured at a peak efficiency of 43.5 percent, topping previous records. The San Jose, Calif.-based company said that the efficiency mark was verified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Measurement and Characterization Laboratory. To achieve the 43.5 percent mark, Solar Junction designed a multijunction cell made of multiple layers of photovoltaic material. Each layer is optimized to convert a different portion of the light spectrum to electrical energy. To boost the amount of sunlight that goes into the very small, 5.5-millimeter square cells, light is concentrated with mirrors. The 43.5 percent efficiency was reached at a concentration of 400 suns and maintained that level up to 1,000 suns, Solar Junction said.Multijunction solar cells with concentrated sunlight have been used for decades in spacecraft and to make electricity in desert areas. Solar Junction intends to supply its cells to companies which manufacture concentrating solar photovoltaic (CPV) collectors, such as Amonix and Concentrix Solar, for utility-scale solar projects. The company expects that its multijunction cells, which are layered onto a gallium arsenide substrate, will continue to improve in efficiency, which will make CPV more attractive to utility-scale solar developers. Competing technologies are less efficient flat solar panels or concentrating solar thermal technology. The 4-year-old company is seeking a Department of Energy loan guarantee to expand its production to 250 megawatts per year and to start shipping commercial cells within a year.

0 Vote(s)

Monday we brought you more details on the upcoming HTC Droid Incredible 2, and now it appears that the smartphone will land at Verizon Wireless on April 28. According to a tipster, there's a 99 percent chance that the upgrade to theDroid Incredible will go on sale two weeks from today "barring any unforeseen complications." We still don't know pricing, but we suspect that it will cost in the $199 range with service. We also got to peruse the marketing flier, which confirms that the handset will offer a 1GHz processor, a front-facing camera for video conferencing, and dual CDMA/GSM support for roaming to more than 200 countries. The candy bar design looks pretty standard, though it should sport a slim profile and a sizable touch screen. Thanks, VZW_Rep

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft will release 17 bulletins next week to fix 64 vulnerabilities across a swath of products including Windows, Office, and Internet Explorer, the company said in its Patch Tuesday preview. Of the bulletins, nine are rated "critical" and eight are "important," the company said in a TechNet blog post today. In addition to all versions of Windows' IE6, IE7, andIE8' numerous versions of Office for Windows and theMac, affected software includes Visual Studio .NET and Visual C++, according to the advisory. "This month we'll be closing some issues that Microsoft has already previously spoken to, including the SMB Browser (Critical) issue publicly disclosed Feb. 15. Microsoft assessed the situation and reported that although the vulnerability could theoretically allow Remote Code Execution, that was extremely unlikely. To this day, we have seen no evidence of attacks," the company said in its blog post. "We are also planning a fix for the MHTML vulnerability in Windows, rated Important," the post said. "We alerted people to this issue with Security Advisory 2501696 (including a Fix-It that fully protected customers once downloaded) back in late January. In March, we updated the advisory to let people know we were aware of limited, targeted attacks." The release represents a large number of bulletins and vulnerabilities addressed at one time for Microsoft. The company issued 17 bulletins in December and plugged a record 49 holes in October. "Microsoft is planning to release 17 bulletins and a whopping 64 CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) this month, a new CVE record," said Andrew Storms, director of security for nCircle. "That seems like a huge number of bugs but it's actually about what we expected. Ever since the middle of last year Microsoft's bulletin releases generally hit double digits every other month."

0 Vote(s)

Federal prosecutors are looking into whether mobile application makers, advertisers, and mobile app store owners are violating the law when it comes to transmitting users' personal data. But what's it all mean for average consumersThe music service Pandora disclosed in a U.S. Securities Exchange Commission filing recently that it has been subpoenaed by a grand jury to provide information about how its mobile app collects data. The investigation appears to be prompted by a report published by The Wall Street Journal in December that evaluated 101 popular mobile apps. The newspaper said in that article that more than half the applications tested disclosed consumers' personal information without their consent or knowledge. The story also prompted at least two civil lawsuits against several application companies including Pandora as well as Apple and some ad network aggregators. To get a better understanding of what this means for users, CNET put together this FAQ.What is this federal investigation aboutIn December, The Wall Street Journal published a story stating that more than half of the 101 mobile apps it tested share information about users without their consent. Civil lawsuits have been filed against several application companies and Apple, which runs and approves apps for its App Store. The federal investigation is likely looking further into these allegations to see if the law has been broken. Specifically, the government is investigating whether app developers have violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, according to an unnamed source who spoke to The Wall Street Journal in a story published Monday. This law was created to prosecute computer hackers who go after information stored on a computer. What information is shared in mobile applicationsDepending on the application, there is a lot of information that can be shared. Some of this information is provided by the consumer and with the consent of the user. But some of it is being sent from mobile devices without the user even knowing or realizing it.For example, people using an app like FourSquare realize that their location is being tracked. That's the purpose of the application. Users of Pandora also know that their musical tastes are being tracked. Again, that's the purpose of the application. And many people assume and tacitly accept that this information is shared with advertisers. This is why people receive coupons for certain places they visit on FourSquare or why people hear or see certain advertisements on Pandora. But what many users might not realize is that there is some information that is being transmitted from their phones that they don't realize is being shared. And some of this information can also be used to identify them. For example, in The Wall Street Journal test, the paper said the most widely shared detail was the unique ID number assigned to every phone. These IDs are set by phone makers, carriers, or operating system developers to track devices. And they usually are not able to be deleted or blocked. For example, Apple uses a unique device identifier called a UDID, which is similar to a serial number that belongs to each iOS device. According to the test that the WSJ conducted, this number was often transmitted to advertising companies to track usage. In one of the civil lawsuits filed against Apple after the WSJ story was published, the plaintiff alleges that this UDID can be used by third parties to know which apps you download, how frequently you use those apps, and for how long. Also, when this information is gathered and compared with other data collected, the suit alleges that third parties can extrapolate a person's gender, location, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views. All of this can be obtained without the user ever providing consent or having knowledge that the information has been transmitted and shared with third parties.Does Apple have a policy against thisYes, Apple certifies all of its apps for its App Store. And the company's policy is thatiPhone andiPad apps "cannot transmit data about a user without obtaining the user's prior permission and providing the user with access to information about how and where the data will be used." But according to the WSJ story and the lawsuits filed against Apple, this rule isn't always followed by application developers. Apple has declined to comment on this. What aboutGoogle Android phones Are they vulnerable as wellYes, every phone has a unique identifier that is used and this information could be transmitted to third parties, which could extrapolate information based on this identifier. So far Google hasn't been named in any of the civil lawsuits. But an unnamed source in another recent Wall Street Journal article about the federal investigation said Google has been asked to provide information. A Google spokesperson did not return phone calls or e-mails seeking comment on this topic. Google is different from Apple in the sense that it doesn't certify or test applications for submission into the Android Market. So the company says it's up to the application developer to handle the user information appropriately. That said, Google does require that Android apps notify users, before they download the app, about what information on the device the app will access. For example, if an app will access the camera, memory, contact list, or a number of things on the device. Users then have the option to not install the app.But if some of this information is being given up by users with their consent and permission, why is this a problemWhat makes all of this somewhat troubling is that even if a user provides permission for the app to use its location or other information, neither Apple nor Google require app developers to disclose whether or not they send that information onto third parties, such as advertisers. Also, consumers are often not notified if their unique device identifier is being used by advertisers. How can I keep apps from getting at my informationOn iOS devices:Applications that want to make use of your location are required to first get your approval. This comes as a pop-up notification the first time the application asks. If you do not want an app to have your location, you can deny this message. Apple's iOS also keeps track of each time the location is being used with an arrow in the device's status bar at the top of the screen. As for other types of data, that's where some of the controversy lies. The majority of app makers put third-party tracking tools as part of the underlying code of their application, meaning there's no on-off switch. One solution that users have come up with is jailbreaking their device to get low-level system access, then installing programs that can provide a system-wide block for third-party trackers. For those with a jailbroken iOS device, there's PrivaCy, a free settings option that includes toggles to turn on and off the anonymous usage statistics sent to companies like Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media. This gives users a granular control over which of these networks apps can talk to. For Android users:Unlike on iOS, there's no app that lets you turn particular data collectors on or off across all apps. However there's a $2 app called Privacy Blocker that can go through your applications and find which are transmitting certain kinds of data. The program is then able to let users toggle, or make edits to those bits of information, such as changing a listed phone number or name fields. The next time that application checks in, it will be transmitting the data the users has come up with. For BlackBerry users:The BlackBerry Analytics service, which some application makers use to collect anonymous usage data, can be opted out of. This must be done on an application by application basis. Instructions for how to turn it off can be found on the BlackBerry support forums, linked here.

0 Vote(s)

The plane made its first flight on December 15, 2009, and is slated for first customer delivery some time later this year. But there's still something thrilling about seeing one of the next-generation planes doing tests like this up close.Still, today's mainly about the new 747.

Part of the tradition of an Apple product release is the teardown. Usually within hours of the first sales, pictures begin to emerge from the odd people who delight in taking the new gadgets apart to see what's going on inside. The days following Friday's release of the iPad 2 have been no different. I've seen two different teardowns already. But the teardown that Wall Street and the investment community is waiting on is the one from the market research firm IHS iSuppli, whose team spent all day Saturday in a furious effort to dissemble a 32-gigabyteiPad 2 and estimate the cost that Apple paid for every component. They gave me an exclusive early look at their findings. The point is to form a partial picture of the gross profit margin on every unit, a figure that Apple generally keeps to itself. This information is useful to investors and analysts who then factor the findings in with other assumptions they use to predict how much of a profit Apple is going to report over the next few quarters. The headline of iSuppli's teardown researcher is always the estimated bill-of-materials cost, which is the sum cost that it thinks Apple has paid for all the hardware inside the iPad 2. It doesn't take into account the cost to develop software, or other things like packaging, shipping and distribution, or manufacturing. In this case the estimates are for the 32-gigabyte, 3G version of the iPad which sells for $729, and there are two estimates, one for the AT&T version--$326.60, and one for the Verizon Wireless version--$323.35. Some of the wireless chips used in the AT&T version are a little more expensive or require an extra part. For example, on the Verizon version, GPS is integrated with the Qualcomm-made wireless baseband chip. On the AT&T version, an extra GPS chip had to be added along with the Broadcom-made Bluteooth and Wi-Fi chips, adding an extra cost of $1.50 per unit. The baseband wireless chips were naturally different because AT&T and Verizon use different wireless technologies. Intel, the new owner of the former wireless chip division of Infineon, supplied the main wireless chip in the AT&T version, with supporting chips coming from TriQuint Semiconductor and Skyworks for a combined cost of $18.70.Qualcomm supplied the main wireless chip Verizon version, with supporting chips coming from Skyworks, Avago Technologies, and Murata for a combined cost of $16.35. While there had been some speculation that Apple had used a Qualcomm chip in both versions, it turned out not to be the case.Aside from the wireless chips, the components are otherwise identical across both versions. Both sport Apple's A5 chip, and iSuppli says that Samsung is still manufacturing it for Apple at a cost of $14. While there had been some talk in recent weeks that Apple was moving its chip manufacturing contract to Tawain Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., there's no evidence that it has made such a move, at least not yet.The most expensive component by far is the touch-sensitive display, coming at $127. iSuppli says that the LCD portion the unit they tore apart was built by LG Display, but Apple is known to use other sources for displays, including Samsung, and possibly ChiMei Innolux. The glass assembly covering the display is thought to come from TPK or WinTek. iSuppli says costs on the display are going up because manufacturing yields on LCDs have been lower. Apple is also thought to be using a more expensive glue to improve the efficiency to the process of bonding a new thinner type of Gorilla glass to the display.Samsung supplied Apple with the NAND flash memory used in the iSuppli sample, holding on to a relationship that goes back several years to the days of the firstiPod nano, though Toshiba is also known to supply Apple with flash. It is the world biggest consumer of flash memory after all. Elpida supplied the DRAM memory. iSuppli estimates the combined cost of memory, both flash and DRAM plus a Micron-made MCP memory chip at $65.70.Then there's a set of components seen in the iPad 1 remained the same in the iPad 2. STMicroelectronics supplied the gyroscope and the accelerometer, and AKM Semiconductor supplied the electronic compass. Broadcom supplied touch interface chips, while Texas Instruments supplied a touch screen driver chip. Analog Devices supplied a capacitive touch controller. Finally there's the two cameras. iSuppli hasn't yet named the suppliers there, though the usual candidate is Aptina, the former camera unit of Micron, though it's possible that Apple sources them from more than one place.iSuppli's estimates are a lot higher than the findings of another teardown shop, UBM Techinsights. The Wall Street Journal reported that UBM's cost estimate is about $270, but that estimate was made before it conducted its actual teardown, and didn't change once it had.

0 Vote(s)

Researchers competing for $15,000 awards were able to successfully attackInternet Explorer 8 on Windows 7, Safari onMac OS X, theiPhone 4, and the BlackBerry Torch 9800 in an annual hacker contest at the CanSecWest security conference this week. For a variety of reasons, no efforts were made to attack Chrome, Firefox, Android or Windows Phone 7, the organizer of the Pwn2Own contest told CNET today. (Credit:CNET) One team of experts that had an exploit prepared to try against Windows 7 had to withdraw because of travel issues, according to Aaron Portnoy, manager of security research for HP DV Labs and lead for the ZDI (Zero Day Initiative) program that sponsors Pwn2Own. Windows 7 also was going to be a target for George Hotz, who goes by the hacker name "Geohot," but he withdrew to focus on his legal defense, Portnoy said. Hotz has been sued by Sony for allegedly violating copyright laws by distributing tools that jailbreak the PlayStation 3, which allows home brew and pirated applications to be played on the console. Another contestant who was going to target Safari, Android, and iPhone withdrew at the request of his company, Portnoy said, declining to identify the contestant or his employer or to speculate why. And Duo Security researcher Jon Oberheide said he blew his chances at exploiting Android in the contest by incorrectly assuming that a bug he recently found and reported to Google directly was ineligible for the event. The team that successfully exploited the BlackBerry also was planning to attack Chrome, but spent their time on exploits for other targets, he said. Portnoy said he believed they would have been able to exploit Chrome because he "can attest to their skill." On Wednesday, Chaouki Bekrar of French security company Vupen was able to attack Safari by using a drive-by download. Ireland-based researcher Stephen Fewer of Harmony Security exploited several bugs to defeat the memory protections in IE8, as well as bypass DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) on a laptop running Windows 7. Fewer's IE exploit was the most impressive of the contest, according to Portnoy. "He had three different vulnerabilities he used in tandem to exploit IE and break out of IE's protected mode, which is Microsoft's equivalent to sandbox architecture," he said. "It was a unique technique he discovered." Meanwhile, Internet Explorer 9 does not contain the bug Fewer used in the contest, according to Microsoft. A fix for IE8 is being worked on, Jerry Bryant, a group manager with the Microsoft Security Response Center, told Computerworld. Yesterday, three researchers--Willem Pinckaers, Vincenzo Iozzo, and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann--used three bugs to exploit the BlackBerry browser and run their attack code on the device. Charlie Miller, who successfully defeated Safari on the Mac the past three years, used a new exploit he created with colleague Dion Blazakis to run code on the iPhone after surfing to a Web page hosting malicious code. Miller, a researcher at Independent Security Evaluators, noted that the iOS 4.3 software Apple released on Wednesday includes ASLR, which would somewhat mitigate his exploit. "The vulnerability I found is still in there, but it would be harder to write for it today than it would have been a few days ago," he said in a phone interview. Through the Zero Day Initiative the Pwn2Own winners share the exploits with the companies whose software is affected so they can be patched. Researchers who hold exploits they weren't able to try in the contest can also report them through the disclosure program and get paid. "It was nice to see that some of the platforms that didn't go down last year went down this year, like the BlackBerry," Portnoy said. "Media and public perception makes it seem that these devices are impenetrable if they weren't hacked at the contest," which is not the case. In addition to cash prizes, winners in the contest receive laptops or smartphones, depending on the platform they target. Google also had said it would pay $20,000 to anyone who successfully attacked Google code as part of the Chrome contest. CanSecWest was held in Vancouver, Canada, this week.

0 Vote(s)

Breach costs and ranking by type of breach, 2009 and 2010.(Credit:Ponemon/Symantec) Negligence is the biggest cause of data breaches at corporations, but criminal attacks are growing fastest, a study released today concludes. The average cost of a data breach for a victimized organization increased to $7.2 million, and the average cost per record came to $214, up $10 from the previous year, according to the 2010 Annual Study: U.S. Cost of a Data Breach, which was conducted by the Ponemon Institute and based on data supplied by 51 U.S. companies across 15 different industry sectors. The costs associated with a breach involve detecting the incident, investigation, forensics, customer notification, paying for identity-protection services for victims, business disruption, and productivity losses, said Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute. A record can contain only one piece of information on an individual or multiple pieces of data, including social security number, contact information, driver's license number, purchasing habits, and account number, he said. Malicious or criminal attacks are the most expensive and make up the fastest-growing category, with 31 percent of all breaches involving malice or crime. Negligence was the most common threat, with 41 percent of all breaches, according to the study, which was sponsored by Symantec. The most expensive breach reported in the study was $35.3 million, and the least expensive was $780,000. The companies have devised an online Data Breach Calculator for helping estimate how likely a breach is and how much a breach would cost based on an organization's size, industry, location, and security practices.

0 Vote(s)

Trend Micro has created an Online Guardian that it says will help parents monitor and control the online activity of their children. Debuting today, Online Guardian for Parents continues the revamp of Trend Micro's home consumer security line that started last fall with its cloud-based Titanium security suites. In fact, Online Guardian leverages the same cloud-based, proprietary database called Smart Protection to extend rapid-response protection to Web site monitoring.Trend Micro&39's new Online Guardian dashboard.(Credit:Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET)In addition to standard parental control features such as URL filtering, instant message monitoring, identity data protection, an online time manager, a Web-based control panel, and per-child user profiles, Online Manager's social networking guards separate it from the current competition like Norton Online Family and NetNanny. Parents can use Online Manager to monitor pictures and video viewed on YouTube and Flickr, but the program's best social networking tools come from its Facebook app.Parents can use the Online Guardian Facebook app to monitor public wall posts, including photos and videos, as well as private, nonpublic posts, and get reports on mobile device Facebook activity. However, because the Facebook monitoring depends on an app, it is possible for the Facebook user to simply disable the app, which will then prevent reporting. "The child can uninstall the app," admitted Laura Martinez, Online Guardian's product manager at Trend Micro, but she cautioned that there are several safeguards that will keep parents in the loop. "Online Guardian's browser logging will keep track of browsing history, and the Guardian will automatically notify parents if there's been no Facebook activity detected for seven days." She agreed that it's an imperfect solution, and said that it likely will be addressed in future versions. For right now, Trend Micro Online Guardian remains a desktop app, with its dashboard only accessible on mobile devices via the browser. Martinez said that the first revision to the program will introduceiPhone and Android dashboard apps, although there's no word yet on how Online Guardian will mesh with Trend Micro Mobile Security, the company's Android app, which already offers limited parental control features. Online Guardian is available as an unrestricted 30-day trial, after which a one-year license retails for $49.95, the same price as Norton Online Family, and $10 more than NetNanny.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Amazon)AT&T will sell the 6-inch, 3G version of the Amazon Kindle in company-owned stores starting Sunday, it announced today. The carrier will be selling the e-reader for $189, the same price it's available for on Amazon.com and in other retail outlets. Customers who opt to buy the Kindle at AT&T stores won't find any special arrangements with the carrier, so consider this just another place where Kindle seekers can pick up the e-reader. AT&T's decision to start selling the Kindle on its store shelves makes for a rather interesting dynamic in its stores. Soon, the Kindle will be sitting next to the iBooks-equipped iPad in AT&T stores, enabling those looking for an e-reader to try out both devices before they make their choice.Amazon's Kindle 3G connects to the Web via Wi-Fi or over AT&T's 3G network for free. It allows users to download books, periodicals, and other content wirelessly, and is capable of storing up to 3,500 books. According to AT&T, the Amazon Kindle Store now has over 810,000 books for customers to choose from.Amazon revealed in December that its third-generation Kindle is the bestselling product of all time on its Web site, surpassing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)." On Christmas Day, "more people turned on new Kindles for the first time, downloaded more Kindle Buy Once, Read Everywhere apps, and purchased more Kindle books than on any other day in history," Amazon said at the time. The company did not release sales figures however. The Kindle was also the top-selling device on Amazon between November 14 and December 19, besting the 8GBiPod Touch, according to the company.AT&T joins Target and Best Buy in the growing number of retailers that sell the Kindle on store shelves.

0 Vote(s)

Hewlett-Packard has officially killed the Envy 13, a MacBook Air rival that follows the Dell Adamo into the dustbin of luxury laptop history. HP Envy 13: like the 13-inch MacBook Air and Dell Adamo 13, it has an all-metal chassis.(Credit:Hewlett-Packard)After moving the Envy 13 into the fire sale bin over the last few months, the laptop is officially defunct. This follows the demise of the Dell Adamo. "We don't offer the Envy 13 anymore...the Envy 14 basically replaced [it]," an HP spokeswoman said today. But the Envy 14 is hardly what the 13 was: at under 4 pounds, it weighed about two pounds less than the 14 and was a svelte 0.8 inches thick, compared to the 14's prosaic 1.16 inches. (Like the MacBook Air and Dell Adamo, the Envy 13 did not integrate an optical drive.) For those unfamiliar with the Envy 13, it was an obvious response to Apple's aluminum MacBook line and specifically the MacBook Air. (This was confirmed by an HP representative I spoke to at a trade show I was attending when the Envy 13 was released.) In fact, the 13 was the marquee model in the original Envy lineup announced back in September of 2009, when HP sang its praises. "The Envy 13's strong performance is delivered in a small frame--less than an inch thin and weighing 3.74 pounds. The exterior's aluminum and magnesium construction provides durability in a sleek design," HP said at the time. And it was probably the only top-tier ultra-slim luxury laptop to use a high-performance standalone, aka "discrete," graphics chip: an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330, which gave it stellar graphics performance compared to its peers. Even the Air used (and still uses) an integrated graphics solution from Nvidia. (For all of you graphics silicon aficionados who might take exception to that statement, the Nvidia GeForce 9400M, used in the prior version of the Air, and the GeForce 320M, used in the 2010 Air, are integrated into an Nvidia chipset, i.e., they are not discrete graphics chips.) Where the Envy 13 fell down was the use of a standard 5400RPM hard-disk drive. Though better than the prior MacBook Air's slower 4200RPM hard disk model, it was a mismatch for that form factor that ultimately, like the Dell Adamo and 2010 MacBook Air, would standardize on solid-state drives. There were Intel 80GB and 160GB solid-state drive options for the Envy 13, but these drove the price into the stratosphere (a common failing of first-generation ultraportables). The Envy's original starting price was $1,699 and it quickly jumped to more than $2,000 by adding an SSD. Over the past few months, HP had been selling the Envy 13 for $999, with a $450 instant rebate. That model included an Intel 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo Processor (SL9300), 3GB of memory, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 Graphics with 512MB of dedicated memory, Beats audio, a 250GB (5400RPM) hard-disk drive, an external SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW drive with double layer support, andWindows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. But that may have been too little, too late. Like the Dell Adamo, the first-generation of ultraportables were just too pricey for many consumers to justify. Here's a spec-to-spec comparison with the MacBook Air that I did back in November of 2009.

0 Vote(s)

Nvidia's CEO added his two cents to an increasingly popular theory on laptop design: that is, the MacBook Air as a template for all future designs. The Toshiba AC110, based on an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, hints at what&39's to come.(Credit:Toshiba)In case you're wondering where the laptop is headed--circa 2014--Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang offered what could be considered a highly educated guess in response to a question I posed to him in a phone interview today. "You'll have trouble finding one that doesn't look like the MacBook Air," he said. "I think the Macbook Air is a good mental image of what a clamshell laptop will look like." "They'll be thin because you won't need any heat pipes, the fan, and extra batteries to lug around," according to Huang. Nvidia chips have played an important role in the MacBook Air. Apple chose Nvidia graphics silicon beginning with the second-generation Air. And its role eclipsed that of Intel in the 2010 MBA (third generation): Nvidia's GeForce 320M graphics processor is the only major logic chip to see a significant upgrade in the Air (Intel's silicon changed very little from second- to third-generation). But Huang's vision for the future laptop goes beyond today's Air. It is rooted in devices running on power-sipping ARM chips, of which Nvidia is now a major supplier totablet makers like Motorola, Samsung, and LG. And by 2014, ARM laptops will likely be running a full-blown version of Windows--if that's even necessary in light of the burgeoning popularity Google's Android, which runs almost predominantly on ARM. Speaking of Android, if the present is prelude to what's to come, the Toshiba AC110 represents the future of extremely thin and light laptops thanks to its use of an ARM-based Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. And don't think will they will be slow. Nvidia is already hawking a third-generation quad-core Tegra processor that should make it into tablets this year.

0 Vote(s)

Well, it's about time.Boxee announced today that Netflix streaming is finally available to owners of the company's Boxee Box. In order to access Netflix streaming, users will need to either wait for the automatic update to take effect within the next 24 hours or manually update their set-top boxes."Netflix support was the most common request we had on our blog comments, forum posts, tweets, etc.," Boxee CEO Avner Ronen said in a blog post accompanying the announcement. "We heard you loud and clear. We were bummed that we could not make it happen earlier, but are very excited to have it out today."When the Boxee Box first launched in November, the company said that it would make Netflix available by the end of 2010. After hitting some snags, it promised that Netflix was "still on track" for a launch at the end of January. Earlier this month, Boxee said in a blog post that it wasn't able to hit its self-imposed deadline because it had "not yet satisfied Netflix's security requirements."Luckily, that wait is finally over. But now Boxee has some catching up to do. Netflix streaming has been running for quite some time on several of the device's competitors, including the Apple TV, Roku set-top boxes, and the Logitech Revue, among others.

0 Vote(s)

Fifty fish in Microsoft&39's virtual aquarium moved relatively swiftly in this early version of IE9 running with hardware acceleration on Windows Phone 7.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)BARCELONA--Apple gets plenty of praise for advancingmobile browsers with itsiPhone's version ofSafari, but an audience greeted its performance with some laughter as Microsoft compared it to an upcoming version of IE9 for Windows Phone 7.Joe Belfiore, a Microsoft corporate vice president, showed off the browser here at the Mobile World Congress show during a keynote speech by Chief Executive Steve Ballmer. Specifically, Belfiore showed it running a Microsoft fishtank demonstration that's been in widespread use since the hardware acceleration work began in earnest among personal computer browser makers last year. And he got a laugh from out of the audience when he compared the 50 fish in the IE9 virtual fishtak on an unnamed HTC phone. They flitted rapidly on IE9 but barely moved on Safari."The Safari Web browser is not taking advantage of hardware acceleration so you really get a sense for how dramatic the difference is when we use the full-power capability of the device," he said.Belfiore neglected to emphasize that the version of IE9 he was pitting against Safari isn't due until toward the end of 2011 with an update to Windows Phone 7, and it's quite likely Safari will look different then, presumably running on new iPhone hardware.Like IE9 for Windows on PCs, the mobile version includes hardware acceleration in some domains and supports HTML5, a next-generation standard for Web pages. Belfiore also showed the mobile browser using HTML5's ability to show built-in video, in this case with a demonstration version of an IMDb movie site.Microsoft, lagging Apple's iOS and Google's Android in the smartphone market, is trying furiously to become a contender with Windows Phone 7. Released in November, a minor upgrade is due in weeks bringing copy and paste abilities and some better application performance, said Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Windows Phone 7. The IE9 for mobile devices will arrive later in 2011 in a major release, an upgrade pace not as rapid as Google's.Windows Phone customers could well be pleased with IE9--indeed, they'd better be, because it's unlikely they'll get an alternative. That's because Microsoft requires third-party apps to be written in Silverlight or XNA, and browsers today typically aren't."If you can write a browser in Silverlight or XNA, you could submit it to the market," Sullivan said. "We have no policy" to specifically bar other browsers, he added.Opera and Firefox are available on Android, though only in beta thus far, because Google released a native development kit (NDK) that lets programmers write to lower-level interfaces. Is it possible that Microsoft might take that route Not likely, he said."We have no plans" for an NDC, Sullivan said. "We think our development platform and tools are a key strength of the platform."

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CVRH Enterprises)Thanks to apps like Epicurious, How to Cook Everything, and Martha's Everyday Food, iPads make excellent kitchen companions.Just one problem: how do you protect your priceyiPad from the perils of the kitchen I'm talking messy ingredients, hot stoves, sticky-fingered kids, and the like.Simple: mount it underneath a cabinet. That not only gets it up off the counter (and out of harm's way), but also puts it closer to eye level so you're not constantly bending down to check your recipe. One of the easiest and most affordable options I've found is the Original Kitchen iPad Rack, a heavy-duty acrylic tray for under-cabinet iPad mounting. The price is $29.95, plus $7.95 for shipping. To use the rack, you need only install three white brackets--a job that takes 5 minutes at most. An included paper template makes it easy to mark where you'll drill your pilot holes for the screws. (The instructions don't mention drilling, but they should.) Once the brackets are installed, you simply hook the rack into them, then place your iPad on the rack. What's cool is that you can just as easily remove the rack when you don't need it, tossing it in a drawer or cupboard until next time. Another design amenity: the rack's lower lip is deep enough to accommodate your iPad even if it's in a thick case, and the whole thing is just long enough to hold your iPad in portrait orientation if you prefer. The product works really well, though I do have a couple gripes. First, the rack itself may be removable, but the brackets aren't--so you'll probably see them poking down from beneath your cabinets. They're a bit of an eyesore. If you can live with that, you may decide you want to use the rack in a second or even third location. CVRH Enterprises charges $8 for an extra set of brackets or $15 for two extra sets. Come on, guys. ReallyFinally, and this is another bracket-related complaint, the rack can't rotate. Why not switch to a wider, single bracket that can turn, say, 45 degrees in each direction That would make the rack a lot more versatile.Of course, it's pretty versatile already. Though it may not be perfect, at least by my definition, the Original Kitchen iPad Rack is a fine solution for people who are looking to keep their iPads safe and accessible in the kitchen.

0 Vote(s)

Cadillac calls its unique design language Art and Science.(Credit:Cadillac)Automotive design language (photos) In recent years, automotive designers have become very aware that strong design language reinforces a brand. BMW and Cadillac pushed hard in the last decade to create a common look to all models under each brand. The result was that, when you see a Cadillac on the street, you know that it is a Cadillac. No othercars look quite like it.Other companies quickly got on board. Automotive designers come up with phrases to help their teams focus when designing a new car or a model update. Design languages such as L-Finesse, Keen Edge, and Fluidic Sculpture encompass the contours of the sides of a car, the grille, exterior lighting, fenders, and rear. The phrases may sound a little flighty, but they often result in strong design themes, giving a brand unique character. We've put together photos that illustrate the design languages of major automotive brands with strong themes, along with a few notable design elements that distinguish specific car makes.Check out the language of automotive design.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)Google wasn't the first mobile platform provider to introduce an online app catalog, but its Android Market Web storeis the first to offer seamless over-the-air installation.Using the online Android Market is fairly straightforward. Apart from some initial hiccups everyone encountered when the Web store first launched, it takes just a few mouse clicks to wirelessly download both paid and free apps without craning over your smartphone screen or straining your peepers. However, those early frustrations are telling. Scrambling to test the online Market just after it launched, I had no problems selecting apps to download, but several of my first installation attempts failed before they succeeded. What to do if your online Market apps refuse to download is definitely a concern, particularly if you've just paid good money for an app.First, have a little patience. People downloading over a 2.5G EDGE connection, for instance, may not see downloads install as quickly as if they were on a Wi-Fi connection. That said, if the installation doesn't start within about 10 seconds, you may have a failed transfer on your hands. The good news is that your app selection is tied to the same Google account you use on your Android phone. When in doubt, going to the Settings menu on the Web store will show a list of past purchases. If your app is on that list, but not on your phone, you can download it afresh from the Market app on your phone--without being doubly charged. If your app isn't on the list, just try the installation again from the Web-based Market.

0 Vote(s)

Philipp Humm from T-Mobile with Jong-seok Park of LG taunt us all by waiving around their new toys' not (yet) letting us play :((Credit:LG and T-Mobile)Last month, we briefly covered the T-Mobile/LG G-Slate atCES. While information was trickling in then, it seems the flood gates of info will soon be opened for all to willingly dive into.On Wednesday, T-Mobile and LG released new information on its G-Slatetablet. As previously revealed the G-Slate will run on Google's "optimized for tablets" OS, Honeycomb, aka Android 3.0. As exciting as Honeycomb is, it won't be exclusive to the G-Slate and the device will need more than a new UI to get us excited. Here's a list of its attempt:8.9-inch "3D capable" multi-touch display1 GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor32GB of internal memoryBuilt-in gyroscopeBuilt-in accelerometerAmbient light sensorVideo chat over WiFi or 4G network.720p on device playback1080p playback on external display via HDMIFlash supportThe G-Slate will also feature a rear-facing 3D stereoscopic camera-array, which looks to be made up of two cameras, operating in tandem to produce the 3D effect. This will allow users to record 1080p 3D videos and view 3D content on the device or an external display. Unfortunately, viewing 3D on the G-Slate will require glasses (booo!)' the red and blue variety (double booo!). Both cameras are used in tandem to produce the 3D effect.(Credit:Phandroid)In addition, the G-Slate will feature a five megapixel camera with LED flash, plus a front-facing two megapixel camera. LG and T-Mobile expect a release this spring, so look for more coverage in the coming weeks.

0 Vote(s)

Few things in air travel are as polarizing as cell phone use on commercial flights. Though many people quake at the thought of being sealed in a metal tube next to a loud talker, others aren't quite as concerned with peace and quiet. Similarly, while some travelers savor the idea of being out of touch for a few hours, others can't bear the thought of going more than a few minutes without checking their e-mail or updating their Facebook status. In the United States, at least, such a debate is moot since the Federal Aviation Administration shows no sings of budging from its firm "no phones" rule in the sky. But outside our airspace, some international airlines have introduced cell phone use while aloft. The services are available only on select flights, and exactly what you can do with your phone will vary, but more airlines are warming to the idea. Most restrict use to "silent" activities like texting and e-mail, but four airlines--Emirates, Saudi Arabian, TAM, and Malaysia--allow you to make voice calls. Takeoff and landing are still times when your handset must be powered off, but calling Mom is now an option if you're flying to Dubai, Riyadh, Sao Paulo, or Kuala Lumpur. And in case you're keeping score, Emirates is the only airline to install showers on certain aircraft. The technology, which doesn't use standard cell towers, is provided through two companies, AeroMobile and OnAir (Aircraft manufacturer Airbus is a partner in the latter company). In OnAir's case, a "leaky cable" inside the plane broadcasts the cellular signal in the cabin and also converts your communications into a satellite signal. And don't worry about possible interference, as neither company's technology will interfere with navigational systems. Of course, whether that interference even happens is a whole other debate.Keep in mind that in an era when airlines charge for food and pillows, using your phone won't come cheap. For voice calls you should count on paying at least $3 per minute. Data charges will vary, but count on them being pricey as well.

Nokia has canceled the U.S. release of a new smartphone that was supposed to be exclusive to AT&T, CNET has confirmed. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news today, but a source close to the situation, who didn't want to be named, confirmed Nokia had pulled the plug on the launch of the new smartphone on AT&T's network. A leaked image of the Nokia X7 from CNET U.K.(Credit:CNET U.K.)The X7 smartphone hasn't been officially announced yet, but details of the device have been leaked online. The X7, which is still expected to launch outside the U.S. on other carriers, is a touch-screen smartphone designed for mobile gaming that is expected to sport the Symbian 3 software. It's expected to sport an 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash on the back of the device and come with four external speakers. Nokia was expected to announce the new phone with AT&T next month in conjunction with the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The X7 would have marked the first smartphone that Nokia launched exclusively on a U.S. carrier since the company's new CEO Stephen Elop took over in September. Elop, a veteran of Microsoft, replaced Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who had spent 30 years with Nokia. An AT&T representative declined to comment on the situation. And Nokia issued this statement via a spokesman:"We do not comment on market rumor and speculation, or ongoing discussions with our operator partners about what plans we may have together in this market. That said, it is well publicized that we are working hard to regain leadership in the U.S. market and we are in active discussions with our operator partners on that strategy. We look forward to bringing meaningful solutions to market together with our operator partners and when we have something to announce, we will do so."It's not clear why Nokia decided to cancel the U.S. launch of the new smartphone. Nokia has struggled to gain market share in the U.S. market, especially in the fast growing smartphone market. And it has steadily been losing worldwide market share to competitors such as Apple, Research In Motion, and now a slew of competitors selling phones running theGoogle Android operating system.Nokia still had about 32.7 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in the third quarter of 2010, according to market research firm IDC, but this is down from 38.3 percent a year ago. Meanwhile, competitors, such as Apple, Samsung and HTC have all gained market share worldwide. In the U.S., Nokia doesn't even rank in the top five for smartphone makers. For years, the company, which is based in Finland, has talked about the need to break into the U.S. market. One of its biggest problems is finding a U.S. carrier to help subsidize the cost of its devices. Nokia launched the N8 in 2009, but it did not launch the phone with a carrier partner. Instead, consumers can buy the phone at the full retail price of $469. The fact that is has lacked a key carrier partner in the U.S. has hampered sales. This is why a deal with a U.S. carrier is crucial to Nokia's success. And since Nokia only makes phones for GSM networks, AT&T is the biggest potential partner in the U.S. market. So why would Nokia cancel the sale of the X7 on AT&TThe Wall Street Journal's source claims that Nokia canceled the launch of the new smartphone because it didn't feel that AT&T would provide enough of a subsidy to consumers buying the device. U.S. consumers have come to rely on massive carrier subsidies to help defray the cost of owning sophisticated smartphones. Consumers generally expect to pay between $150 and $200 for the latest and greatest smartphones in exchange for signing a two-year contract with the carrier. But the true retail value of these phones is much more than the $200 most people are willing to pay. For example, AT&T sells the 16GBiPhone 4 for $199 with a two-year contract. And it sells the phone for $599 without the contract. That's a subsidy of $400 per device. But CNET's source implied that there could be another reason Nokia doesn't want to launch this particular phone in the U.S.--a lack of confidence in its operating system. The company has already announced plans to move toward the MeeGo operating system on future smartphones. The Symbian 3 software is an update to an operating system that has been a part of Nokia's cell phone family for years. Unlike its competitors, Nokia has resisted embracing other mobile operating systems, such as the fast growing Android.Instead, the company announced last summer a strategy to use a completely different operating system called MeeGo for advanced smartphones and other devices. MeeGo was born in 2010 from the combination of two other Linux efforts: Nokia's Maemo effort and Intel's Moblin. The MeeGo OS is expected to power a range of devices, including pocketable mobile computers, Netbooks, tablets, connected TVs, and in-vehicle infotainment systems. But development of the software has been delayed. Initially, Nokia hinted that the software would be available in 2010. But in October, Elop suggested on an earnings call that MeeGo wouldn't be available until 2011. While Nokia has said it will also keep developing for and including Symbian on certain devices, the operating system does appear to be fading from importance. Even other companies using the Symbian OS seem to phasing it out of new products in lieu of Android. Sony Ericsson is the only major cell phone maker using Symbian other than Nokia. And like its cell phone competitors, such as Motorola, HTC, LG, and Samsung, Sony Ericsson is starting to use Android on its newest smartphones. In fact, the company's Xperia X10 runs Android, and it's expected the new Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone will also run Android. What does all this mean for Nokia and its decision to not launch the Symbian-based X7 in the U.S. on AT&T It's very likely the company is reassessing its U.S. smartphone strategy. Perhaps the company is reevaluating whether it should spend the effort and money to market a product that is using a somewhat outdated platform. Elop has only been at Nokia's helm a few short months, and he has yet to detail his plans for the U.S. market. The Wall Street Journal suggests Nokia might divulge more of its U.S. smartphone strategy on its upcoming quarterly conference call scheduled for January 27. So stay tuned for more on this story as Nokia makes its plans public.Updated 4:46 p.m. PT: This story has been updated with confirmation from CNET sources as well as with additional background information information.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft&39's Costa Mesa, Calif. store is currently under construction, and due to open this spring.(Credit:Microsoft)Microsoft plans to open its third retail store in the state of California later this year. The South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif., will be the latest location to get a Microsoft retail store, and will join Microsoft's other Californian efforts in San Diego and Mission Viejo, the company announced on its Twitter account earlier today. As for the timing, Microsoft is saying only that the new store's doors will open in the spring.Outside of California, Microsoft has retail stores in Scottsdale, Ariz.' Lone Tree, Colo.' Bloomington, Minn.' Oak Brook, Ill.' and one that recently opened in Bellevue, Wash. As ZDnet's Mary Jo Foley notes, Microsoft has not yet ventured toward the East Coast, but may be heading to New York City sometime later this year as part of a six-store retail expansion. Microsoft opened up its first retail store in Scottsdale, Ariz., near the end of 2009. Since then the company has opened up six more, positioning the stores as places where users can come and get their hands on the latest Microsoft products and services--both on the company's own hardware, and from its partners. Microsoft also offers tech support, training, classes, and computers with a set of pre-installed software and settings as part of its Signature effort.Comparisons of Microsoft's efforts to Apple's have been made by many, though not in scale. Apple now has more than 300 stores open around the world, including one in South Coast Plaza.

0 Vote(s)

Device attaches to windshield and connects to car&39's electrical system(Credit:Inthinc)A 2009 study (PDF) from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that truck drivers who were texting were 23 times more at risk of a "crash or near crash event" than "nondistracted driving." As reported by CNET's Jennifer Guevin, the study also found that "texting took a driver's focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds--enough time...to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph." Teenage drivers are especially vulnerable. In addition to being less experienced drivers, they are more likely to text than adults. A Federal Communications Commission consumer advisory on texting while driving quotes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as reporting that driver distraction was the cause of 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008, resulting in 5,800 fatalities and 515,000 injuries. The American Automobile Association says that "taking your eyes off of the road for two seconds doubles your risk of getting into a crash."Inthinc, a Salt Lake City company, was at the Consumer Electronics Show with a solution for parents and companies whose employees have company issued phones. The product, which is called Tiwi and costs $299 plus a $29.95 monthly subscription fee, can disable a cell phone for calling or texting, according to CEO Todd Follmer. It can also report the person's speed, whether they're engaged in aggressive driving, and even if they're using their seat belt. Parents or employers can check in via an Internet portal.
The new i-Disk Rex100 could be the tiniest USB 3.0 flash drive in the world that offers 128GB of storage.(Credit:Pretec)LAS VEGAS--It seems that portable hard drives get progressively smaller asCES 2011 continues.Yesterday, Verbatim introduced the USB 3.0 External SSD that beat the recently reviewed LaCie FastKey both in terms of storage space and portability. Now, as the show is nearing its end, Pretec, a company known more as a maker of system memory, unveiled an ultracompact USB 3.0 flash drive of its own, the i-Disk Rex100. Measuring 2.9 inches by 0.7 inch by 0.2 inch, the i-Disk Rex100 is arguably the tiniest flash drive in the world that offers 128GB of storage space. The drive supports USB 3.0, which translates into much better performance compared with USB 2.0 flash drives. It shares the same design as the LaCie FastKey, taking the shape of a thumbdrive, but about is 40 percent smaller. The i-Disk Rex100 is available later this month in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities. The price has not yet been announced, but like all SSD-based external hard drives, it won't be cheap.Other than the i-Disk100, Pretec also unveiled the i-Disk300, a superthin SSD-based USB 3.0 external drive that offers up to 128GB of storage, and the first USB 3.0 flash card reader, the Pretec P240.
The Wabian-2R robot can jump, but so far only virtually.(Credit:Atsuo Takanishi Lab/Waseda University)Bipedal robots taking pogo-like leaps may be the future of moon exploration, according to an idea the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency intends to test in practice. The moon's gravity is roughly one-sixth that on Earth, which has made it hard for astronauts to maintain their balance as they tried to keep their feet on the planet's surface while walking around. The phenomenon is perhaps best associated in the popular mind with footage taken in 1969 of astronaut Neil Armstrong taking gravity-defying leaps on the moon. But JAXA, which is among the Japanese agencies that wants to send humanoid robot explorers to the moon in lieu of humans, believes the "pogo jumping" style would be the best way for the machines to carry out future explorations. Atsuo Takanishi of Tokyo's Waseda University is developing a software simulation of the Wabian-2R to test how a bipedal robot would fare under moon-like conditions. He recently presented his findings to the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics in Tianjin, China. According to NewScientist, "the team chose to simulate the dynamics of a virtual robot jumping on the spot, like a punk rocker pogo dancing" because the robot's legs would need sufficient thrust to jump and also would need to absorb rapid deceleration upon landing. "They found that while the robot can leap to a height of 1.5 meters, such leaps put stresses on the robot's legs that make it more likely to fall over. Leaping to 0.8 meters improved stability but reduced the robot's maximum running speed. Future simulations will determine the precise trade-off between speed and stability." The Space Oriented Higashiosaka Leading Association (SOHLA), a satellite-manufacturing consortium in the Osaka, Japan, area, has vowed to put bipedal humanoid bots on the moon in the next five years. SOHLA is now developing a prototype astro-bot called "Maido-kun" that it hopes will follow in the steps of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. SOHLA has already worked with JAXA and Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization. This article originally appeared on CBSNews.com.

0 Vote(s)

The product, appropriately dubbed the Official PlayStation App, will enable people to access the PlayStation Network to see their trophies and check on their friends' status, as well as see news related to Sony's gaming ecosystem. The app will also include a social feature for users to share information on Facebook, Twitter, or through e-mail. There was no mention of gameplay in the announcement, which surfaced on PlayStation's European blog. The free app will be available to those running iOS 4 or Android 1.6 and higher. Sony didn't offer a release date on the app but did say it will be initially available in the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. A U.S. launch was not mentioned, and a company representative did not immediately respond to request for comment. Sony isn't alone in trying to capitalize on the mobile space. Xbox Live functionality is available on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. The app allows people to communicate with their Xbox Live friends, as well as play titles on their devices. Along the way, gamers can earn achievements and improve their Gamerscore from their smartphones.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)A news item this week over at AppleInsider uncovered a troubling practice by a developer at the iTunes App Store. Apparently, users who downloaded a free massive multiplayer online game from a Chinese developer complained of unauthorized in-app purchases, running up the bills on their iTunes accounts. One user reported the situation to Apple resulting in him getting a refund for the fraudulent purchases and Apple promising to investigate the claims.Even with a closed system like iTunes, apparently it is still possible for dishonest people to find a way to steal our money. Let's hope that Apple gets to the bottom of this case and finds a way to prevent these unauthorized purchases in the future. Until there's more news about this problem, be sure to regularly check your iTunes receipts (sent to the e-mail address attached to your iTunes account) for strange charges and report the issue to Apple if you have any problems. This week's apps include a unique location-based social network app and an arcade golf game where you flick to win.Locate Wi-Fi hot spots and view a map to find the nearest location.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)GeoGroups (Free) is a location-based social network service (like popular app Foursquare) but adds a few new wrinkles to make it both unique and useful. Like other apps in this genre, GeoGroups uses youriPhone's GPS capabilities to locate both commercial- and user-entered stores, cafes, pubs, and landmarks relative to your current location. You also can create your own group based around anything--not just stores and coffee shops, but the popular bench by the lake in your favorite park, for example. In other words, you can create a location anywhere for other users to discover so they can join the group and add their own content.GeoGroups has all the features of similar location-based social network apps such as map views, directions to locations, and the ability to "check in" once you arrive. You also can snap pictures of locations to add to a post, send the post to Facebook, or send location info to another GeoGroups user or friend via e-mail. Particularly handy is the ability to create a private group (with friends or family members, for example) that tracks your locations in real time. You can even set up the real-time tracking to turn off after a specified amount of time so it's OK if you forget to turn it off.GeoGroups offers 500 public groups (and counting) so you can get started right away and check out popular fishing spots, Wi-Fi hot spots, lighthouses, and waterfalls, as examples. With the ability to create your own locations, the possibilities are truly endless. Overall, if you've been thinking about diving into the world of location-based social network services, GeoGroups offers tons of content and lots of flexibility that will make it useful to just about anyone.During Quickshot games, you really need to hit that middle circle because you get an extra time bonus.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Flick Golf ($2.99) is a unique arcadelike take on golf, focusing on single shots and ball control to score points at one-stroke holes. Those looking for a complete golf game should look elsewhere, but Flick Golf has plenty to offer as a quick pick-up-and-play arcade game. Beautiful graphics make the courses of one-shot holes a joy to behold, and you'll be playing in landscapes from sunny California to wind-swept Scotland. Choose between two game types including World Tour, where you play nine-shot tournaments to try to advance to the next course' or Quickshot, where you'll try to score as many points as you can in 90 seconds.True to its name, Flick Golf requires that you flick or swipe the screen upward through the ball to send your ball to the green. While in the air, you can swipe to add spin and actually change the direction of the ball before it hits the ground. Scoring is measured by where you land the ball in the target (a scoring area with concentric circles around the hole). You also get bonus points for how much spin you used to get the ball to your target and whether you hit the pin with your shot.As you progress through the game, you'll be challenged by difficult courses with gail-force winds you'll need to account for every time you take a shot. Fortunately, the ability to spin the ball while it's in the air will save your less than perfect shots, but a good shot makes it easier to get high-scoring hole-in-one shots. So far I have only hit one perfect shot (a "swish" shot directly into the hole) so even with all the ball control, there is plenty of challenge in this game.Overall, Flick Golf is a great pick-up-and-play arcade golf game with beautiful graphics, precise controls, and plenty of challenge when you just want to waste a little time. You can also buy Flick Golf for iPad ($4.99).What's your favorite iPhone app Do you like the added flexibility for locations in GeoGroups Have you hit a perfect shot in Flick Golf Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

A Russian court has dropped piracy charges against environmental group Baikal Wave due to drastic changes made to Microsoft's licensing program for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) back in October, according to The New York Times. The case, which centered on the legitimacy of Microsoft software the group had been using, resulted partly in the launch of a new, unilateral software licensing program by Microsoft that would give NGOs free and unrestricted access to various Microsoft software. That program was also designed to keep similar investigations from happening in Russia, where software piracy had been used as a means to begin a larger investigation, as well as in other parts of the world.Microsoft's licensing changes, as well as a push by the company for the case to be dropped, helped lead to the end of the case, according to the Times. Though interestingly enough, the group had to contact the police officials in Russian province Irkutsk, which had been responsible for the confiscation of Baikal Wave's dozen computers, in order to find out that the investigation had ceased. In a related post on Microsoft's On the Issues blog, Nancy Anderson, deputy general counsel and corporate VP for Microsoft's worldwide sales group, said that unilateral software licenses for NGOs and media groups are now immediately available in 12 different countries, with more to be added to that list in the future. "We are also making it available in countries where we had already planned to extend the existing program and have been working through the last steps in doing so," Anderson said. "In preparing this software license we consulted with a number of organizations in multiple markets, including Russian civil society groups, to identify and address any open issues and help ensure smooth and efficient implementation of the licensing program."Anderson said that Microsoft is "actively communicating the facts of the license to government officials" in the 12 countries, as well as offering legal assistance to the organizations that are using it, and an easy way to provide records of that license. "As part of this program, we will provide direct evidence, whenever it is needed, that NGOs and small, independent media in these 12 countries are covered by this software license," she said.Microsoft's unilateral license runs through January 1, 2012, after which groups that are taking advantage of it will need to move to Microsoft's standard NGO donation program.

0 Vote(s)

Popular microblogging platform Tumblr is still suffering from an outage that started yesterday."We're working quickly to recover from a major issue in one of our database clusters," Tumblr wrote on its Twitter page about 21 hours ago. "We're incredibly sorry for the inconvenience."Tumblr hasn't provided any information about how the company's database cluster was affected, and has only promised to "be back shortly." In a follow-up tweet released earlier today, Tumblr said that it is working through "a slow and painful recovery." It promised to share information about the outage on the company's blog when the site is back up.That recovery might finally be complete. The company sent out another tweet after the original version of this story was published, saying that "the recovering database cluster is online and healthy." It said that it would be "incrementally opening up access to blogs while monitoring performance."However, that hasn't stopped Tumblr users from taking to Twitter to express their displeasure.Currently, hundreds of Twitter users are commenting on the outage every minute with some wondering if Tumblr "died or something." Many others seem frustrated, saying that the outage, which has been "nearly 24 hours," according to one user, "better be fixed" soon.Tumblr has not responded to a request for comment on the nature of the outage or how much longer the service will be down.We will update this story as we learn more.Updated at 2:53 p.m. PTto include details on Tumblr announcing incremental access to the site.

0 Vote(s)

Flock shifted gears from its Mozilla-powered core to Chromium 6 earlier this year, but only for Windows users. Today, the company released a Chromium 7-based version forMac users, as well as updating its Windows version to Chromium 7. Flock 3.5 is built on Chromium 7, but it&39's still behind the most recent version of the Chromium 8-based Google Chrome.(Credit:Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET)Available for Windows and Mac, Flock 3.5 adds LinkedIn support and include a refined login system. If you log in to a social-networking site that Flock supports the browser itself is automatically logged in to it, too. Updating to Chromium 7 also pushes Flock ahead of its social-networking competitor RockMelt, and the update includes all the security fixes and performance enhancements that Google Chrome received when it revved to version 7. Flock is still behind Chrome, which is now based on Chromium 8. The security fixes are substantial, so if you do use Flock 3 it's absolutely worth updating. Pre-existing users are expected to receive the update automatically, as Chrome users do.Flock is concurrently developing the original Mozilla Gecko-based Flock, now up to version 2.6.1 for Windows and Mac users. It supports more social networking services, but is noticeably slower as well. While the social networking browser isn't for everybody, both versions of Flock are in Facebook's top 10 list.

0 Vote(s)

As Research In Motion waits for its PlayBook tablet to counter incursions onto its enterprise turf by Apple'siPhone andiPad gadgets, some of RIM's enterprise sales force have apparently decided not to wait--they've defected to the competition.Stuart Weinberg of The Wall Street Journal did a little sniffing around on LinkedIn and discovered that in the last year and a half, at least five members of RIM's enterprise sales team have jumped ship and joined Steve Jobs and Co.Those onetime Researchers In Motion are:Geoff Perfect, former head of strategic sales at RIM, who, according to Weinberg's LinkedIn findings, has become head of enterprise iPhone sales at Apple'Joe Bartlett, a senior global sales manager at RIM, who's now pitching the iPhone and iPad to companies in New England'Steve Marshall, a global strategic account manager at RIM, who's now an iPhone sales rep for the Greater New York City area'Peter Decker, a global account manager at RIM, now also an iPhone sales rep for the Greater New York City area' andPaul Alvarez, another former global strategic account manager at RIM, who now works in enterprise iPad and iPhone sales in Canada. The sales team brain-drain presents another challenge for RIM, which has seen one of the main selling points for its BlackBerry related services--security-- chipped away at by the Apple products, as well as by Google's Android operating system.RIM is also watching as IT managers increasingly open their arms to the hugely popular iPhone and iPad, largely because so many of their fellow employees already own the devices. And too, Apple's gadgets enjoy the advantage of having more enterprise apps available to them, a crucial weapon in the fight for customers. It's true that heavy hitters like SAP have voiced their continued support for RIM--but at the same time, they're busily deploying the Apple devices. As noted in Weinberg's Journal article, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said last month that more than 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies are using or testing the iPhone. Will RIM's PlayBook tablet make a difference in this battle for the enterprise We'll have to wait until the new year to find out. The device is scheduled to appear in the U.S. in early 2011, with international availability set for the second quarter.

0 Vote(s)

The NEC MultiSync E231W provides quite a bit for $300.(Credit:Josh P. Miller/CNET)The Features score in CNET's monitor reviews is determined by asking one simple question: "What am I getting for the amount of money I'm paying"So, it should come as no surprise that a monitor that offers a lot for $300 would score highly in the Features subrating, and the NEC MultiSync E231W did just that.First off, the NEC includes the "quadfecta" of ergonomic options, featuring tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustment. It also includes a number of useful Eco options we first saw in the NEC MultiSync PA271W's OSD. No to mention an ambient light sensor and tons of preset modes. Still, including a lot of bells and whistles has no bearing on performance. To find out how the NEC performed, hit this link right here. The monitor hub will answer all other questions, monitor or otherwise. Well, maybe just monitors.

0 Vote(s)

A new startup called AdGrok says it wants to make life easy for businesses running ad campaigns through Googlea4a4s AdWords service.AdWords is a huge, lucrative system, said AdGrok co-founder Antonio Garcia-Martinez, but it can be hard to tell exactly how an ad campaign is performing &8212' especially if youa4a4re a small business that doesna4a4t understand search engine marketing. Garcia-Martinez said he wants to be the a4ATurboTax of search advertisinga4, namely the service that simplifies a complicated process for a wide variety of customers. The San Francisco company first announced its service last summer, but today ita4a4s coming out of beta testing and announcing its pricing model. The most attention-grabbing feature is probably the a4AGrokBara4, which lets customers look at any page on their website and see data about all the AdWords campaigns pointing to that page. (Garcia-Martinez said one of the rookie mistakes in search advertising is to direct all your ads towards your home page, rather than the specific page where a shopper can buy a product or register for your site or whatever.) Customers can see exactly how much theya4a4re paying for each campaign and how well ita4a4s performing. Then they can kill ads that arena4a4t working and create new ones. Garcia-Martinez said that if AdGrok is successful, customers will never have to interact with AdWords directly.Another cool feature involves integration with Shopify, a service that powers online stores. Sites that use Shopify can upload all of their inventory into AdGrok, create ad campaigns around each product, and then immediately end the campaign once theya4a4ve sold out of a specific item.Again, Garcia-Martinez said he hopes to serve the full spectrum of search engine marketing customers. If youa4a4re an agency running a mind-boggling number of campaigns, you might use a search marketing tool like Marin Software to manage all of them but still sign-up for AdGrok to get a quick, high-level view of how those campaigns are doing. On the other hand, if youa4a4re a small business that feels overwhelemed by AdWords, AdGrok can make the process manageable, and you can even hire the company to run your campaigns for you.AdGrok offers free and paid services &8212' the &''standard&'' package is $20 per month. The company was incubated at Y Combinator and has raised $470,000 from Chris Sacca, Russ Siegelman, Ben Narasin, and TriplePoint Capital.
Boxee Box owners (all two of you) rejoice! As promised, Boxee is bringing Vudua4a4s extensive library of streaming high-definition movies to its set-top box in an update today.Additionally, the company says Netflix support for the Boxee Box is still on track for the end of this month.Vudu offers 1080p high-definition films with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. Pricing starts at $2 for 2 nights of a standard definition film, while an HD version will cost a few bucks more. It has a library of over 4,400 HD films, so therea4a4s a good chance youa4a4ll be able to find a recent title on Vudu that isna4a4t available on Netflixa4a4s streaming service. New customers who sign up through the Boxee Box will receive a $5.99 Vudu credit. As we reported in October, Vudua4a4s service is also available on the downloadable version of Boxeea4a4s software, which you can deploy for free on any PC or Mac. Vudu is definitely taking a cue from Netflix, as its service is popping up in many devices &8212' ita4a4s available on HDTVs from Samsung, Toshiba, LG and more, and it hit Sonya4a4s Playstation 3 in November. The addition of new content providers like Vudu and Netflix will certainly go a long way towards making the Boxee Box, which is manufactured by D-Link, a more compelling product. The set-top box was finally released in November of last year for $199, even though Boxee first announced it in December of 2009. Hardware issues, including a switch from Nvidiaa4a4s Tegra chip to Intela4a4s Atom, likely led to the delayed release.By the time it was released, the Boxee Box faced competition from the new $99 Apple TV, not to mention the increasingly popular Roku set-top boxes, which retail between $60 and $100. And of course, there was Google TV, which wasna4a4t a runaway success by any means but managed to steal some attention away from Boxee. The Boxee Box update also includes a slew of bug fixes, all of which you can find at the Boxee blog.Next Story: Android Trojan Soundminer can a4Aheara4 credit card numbers Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: BP says renewable energy growth to beat oil, more of California&'s solar panels come from ChinaPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Boxee Box, HD, movies, rentals, streaming video, TVCompanies: Boxee, D Link, Netflix, Vudu Tags: Boxee Box, HD, movies, rentals, streaming video, TVCompanies: Boxee, D Link, Netflix, VuduDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
