It didn't take long for Samsung to strike back at Apple, with the company yesterday filing lawsuits of its own in three different countries. If you're scratching your head about what's at stake and where things are being filed, or if you're looking for a breakdown of the issues, intellectual-property watcher Florian Mueller has put together a handy chart (similar to the one he created for Microsoft and Motorola's legal spat), which does a good job of breaking down exactly what courts are involved and the specific claims from both parties. The chart (embedded below) tracks specific issues mentioned in Apple's suit, which was filed at the end of last week. The Samsung suits, filed in Germany, Japan, and South Korea, don't have specific information about the patents and other IP items, but Mueller expands on the assertions made in those suits, and on what products are affected, on the final page of the document:Apple vs Samsung 11.04.22(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script")' scribd.type = "text/javascript"' scribd.async = true' scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"' var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]' s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s)' })()'The outcome of this battle is of particular interest given the two companies' ties to each other. Apple uses components from Samsung in a number of its products, including its phones and computers. The two companies also compete fiercely in both those categories.During Apple's second fiscal quarter earnings call with analysts on Wednesday, Apple COO Tim Cook noted that the company was Samsung's largest customer and that Samsung was "a very valued component supplier for us." Nonetheless, Cook said Apple has a different opinion of the company's mobile business."We felt the mobile communications business of Samsung had crossed the line, and after trying for some time to work through the issue, we decided we needed to rely on the courts," Cook said during the call.Shortly following Apple's suit last week, Samsung fired back, saying the company would "respond actively to this legal action taken against us through appropriate legal measures to protect our intellectual property." This first set of suits could be just the start of that response.

0 Vote(s)

Squeezebox Controller running on the iPhone.(Credit:Logitech)Logitech has finally launched its Squeezebox Controller app for iOS-based devices, it announced in a blog post yesterday. The Squeezebox Controller for theiPad,iPhone, andiPod Touch connects to users' Squeezebox player over their home wireless network. Users can choose music, customize tracks, and search for content from the app. According to Logitech, all the features available to users in their players are included in the app. The launch of the Squeezebox Controller app for iOS-based devices comes a month after the company launched the program in the Android Market. Like the iOS option, Logitech's Android app gives users total control over the company's line of Squeezebox devices. Logitech offers a range of Squeezebox players, including the Radio and Duet, which allow users to stream music content throughout the home. They also include access to Pandora, Slacker, and other music-streaming services. The Squeezebox Radio is a favorite of the CNET Reviews team. In 2009, the device earned four of five stars, receiving high marks for the amount of content available and user-friendliness. It retails for $179.99, though savvy shoppers can get it for less online.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Square)Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey's new company, Square, givesiPhone,iPad, andiPod Touch owners the capability to accept credit card payments and charges a small percentage of each transaction only. No monthly or annual fees. No hardware expenses. And now, you can get a Square reader at an Apple Store or from Apple's Web site. This is obviously a huge step for the start-up that has been offering a mobile payment solution for independent contractors and small businesses for almost a year now via its Web site. Square's device is a small card reader plugs into the headphone jack on your iOS (or Android) device. The app is free. The reader is free. It's a great deal for small businesses that can't afford traditional credit card machines or the monthly and yearly upkeep fees that many companies still charge. I have been using Square for the last several months with ease and to great response. Square keeps its iOS app updated and running soundly and offers tremendous online support for the product, and now that its availability will be increasing, Square should see nothing but continued success. Read more about Square from fellow CNET writer Rick Broida here. You can already order your Square from the Apple Store online (the $9.95 price tag includes a $10 credit for Square fees, evening out the hardware cost) and will soon be able to pick one up in every Apple Store in the country. Currently Square is only available in the U.S. Do you have a small business that would benefit (or already has) from Square Let me know in the comments (and include links if you've got them)!

0 Vote(s)

The efficiency gauge on the Volt&39's instrument panel can help drivers maximize fuel economy.(Credit:GM)Most Chevrolet Volt owners probably apply the same driving habits long practiced by hybrid owners, such as braking and accelerating gently, to conserve energy and maximize battery power. But they may not know that small, seemingly inconsequential choices, like how they choose to warm the Volt's interior on a chilly day, can also makes a difference in how far they can go on battery power alone.Chevy Volt vehicle line director Tony Posawatz has lots of practice eeking the most out of his Volt's 16 kWh battery, and says that even during Michigan's cold winter months he's achieved high mileage using battery power alone. While he won't share his actual fuel economy numbers, he did share a few of his battery-power maximizing tips. By taking advantage of the Volt's technology features, driving in Low gear, and being smart about when and how they acclimate their vehicle cabins, drivers can get better gas mileage and go further on a charged battery before switching to extended-range mode.Chevy Volt driving tips to increase fuel economy:1. Use the Volt's instrument panel Efficiency Gauge for driving style guidance, and remember to gently apply the accelerator and the brake whenever possible.2. Use the heated seat feature and Eco mode in cold weather to reduce battery load. Blowing hot air to raise the cabin temperature and warm occupants uses a lot of energy, however, heated seats are the most energy-efficient way to warm the driver.3. Warm or cool thecar using your OnStar MyLink mobile app. Remotely warming or cooling the Volt's cabin while it's still plugged in and connected to the grid saves the battery power for driving.4. Use Low gear. The "L" shifter position can help you engage in more aggressive motor braking, which recaptures more energy for the battery when coasting to a stop, during stop-and-go traffic, driving down hills, and even while driving aggressively.5. Use the waste heat from the engine when in extended range mode to heat the cabin, but remember to turn it down when in EV mode6. Keep the car plugged in for automatic battery conditioning (and low cost off-peak electricity).7. Practice ABC (Always Be Charging). Download charging station locator apps, and keep note of public and private places, such as your friends houses, that have accessible power outlets. Get as many charges in as you can. 8.
Spotify is considering a plan to further cut back the amount of free music it offers to users and is expected to impose new limits perhaps as soon as this week, sources with knowledge of the plans told CNET. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek(Credit:Ian Phillips-McLaren)Spotify, the online music service that has attracted more than 10 million users in Europe in part by offering free-of-charge access to millions of songs, may cap the number of times users can listen to the same song and limit the total number of hours that existing users would have access to its free service, the sources said. Last May, Spotify capped access to free music for the first time. As part of an offering called Spotify Open, new users were given 20 hours of free song listening per month. If they wanted more they had to upgrade to Spotify Unlimited, which offers all-you-can-eat listening for a monthly fee. Whatever changes Spotify makes would go into effect sometime in May, said the sources. A Spotify spokesman was not immediately available for comment. Spotify is perhaps best known in the United States as the music company that has had trouble launching in this country. The company has penned U.S. licensing deals with two of the four major record companies but can't seem to lock down music rights from Universal Music and Warner. Related links&149' Spotify wouldn't offer as much free music here &149' Hey iTunes, here comes Google Music, Spotify&149' Don't expect Spotify in U.S. this holiday seasonIf and when it does launch here, managers have already agreed to limit the amount of free music it offers, sources told CNET in February. The limits on free music appear to be designed to push people into paying for music. Ad-supported music services have struggled to generate profits and prove their business model. Even Pandora, the online radio service that started out paying the bills primarily through ad sales, has placed caps on free music. Still more ad-supported services flamed out and shut their doors, including Ruckus, SpiralFrog, and Imeem. For all of Spotify's notoriety and big European following, the company has not been able to show that it's able to generate big revenue or profits.

0 Vote(s)

GE plans to manufacture 400 megawatts worth annually of thin-film solar cells made with cadmium telluride.(Credit:GE)General Electric plans to build a thin-film solar factory in the U.S. that will produce solar cells that have an efficiency of 12.8 percent, the company announced today. In conjunction with this news, GE also announced that it has acquired PrimeStar Solar, a company GE has had a stake in since 2008.The thin-film solar cells to be manufactured using cadmium telluride were developed by PrimeStar through a cooperative research program with Department of Energy's National Center for Photovoltaics. The cells were given a 12.8 percent efficiency rating, through a verification process conducted by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).Even though others have achieved higher efficiencies in the lab, that 12.8 percent efficiency rating is significant in the world of thin-film solar technology manufacturing. Cells made from silicon can convert sunlight to electricity with a 15 percent to 20 percent efficiency, but are much more expensive to manufacture and considered a completely different class of solar cell. Thin-film solar cells made with copper, indium, gallium, and selenide (CIGS) have reached 15.7 percent efficiency in the lab. Related links &149' GE re-enters solar business with thin-film 'system' &149' Solar CIGS reach 15.7 percent efficiency &149' Report: U.S. solar $6 billion industry in 2010A better comparison would be with First Solar, the company that will be GE's leading competitor. First Solar has been producing thin-film solar cells using cadmium telluride for years, and has said those manufactured cells have an 11.2 percent efficiency"Milestones like these are pivotal as the United States looks to drive widespread adoption of solar technologies," Ryne Raffaelle, director of the National Center for Photovoltaics at NREL, said in a statement.GE said that its new plant, when complete, will be able to produce 400 megawatts worth of thin-film solar cells per year and employ 400 people. That would make it one of the largest thin-film solar manufacturing presences in the U.S.The company didn't give specifics on where the facility will be sited, or when it will go into operation. GE said it plans to announce the location shortly, from among a number of locations being considered.First Solar announced in March that it's building a 250-megawatt plant in Arizona to complement its existing Ohio plant, which will bring its total U.S. manufacturing capacity to 500 megawatts annually by 2012.A few companies, including GE and Abound Solar, have bet on cadmium telluride rather than CIGS. That could be because it is easier to source those two materials instead of the four that go into CIGS. Cadmium and tellurium are often byproducts of mining operations. The U.S. solar market grew 67 percent between 2009 and 2010 and is now a $6 billion market, according to a recent report from Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and GTM Research. The report saw growth potential in the space as more and more utilities seek to build installations for themselves, or source solar electricity for their portfolio. Worldwide demand for solar is also expected to grow to a $113.6 billion industry by 2020, according to a recent report from Clean Edge.GE has long said that it wants to be a major player in the space, announcing in 2009 that it would have a thin-film manufacturing plant in the U.S. by 2011.

0 Vote(s)

According to sources close to the situation, Intel Capital and Advance Publications will lead a $30 million investment round in Kno, the high-profile studenttablet start-up.In addition to the funding from its venture capital arm, Intel itself will take over the hardware design business of Kno, which will now focus on its software to manage the devices that are aimed at the college market.Intel will not manufacture tablets, but take its hardware blueprints and share them with their OEM partners. Its current investors will also participate in the round, said sources, but Intel Capital and Advance, the owner of the Conde Nast publishing empire, make up a big part of the funding.Sources said Intel Capital's investment is $20 million and Advance and others make up the rest of the new funding.BoomTown reported in February that the much-funded and high-profile Silicon Valley start-up aimed at making tablet computers focused on students-was considering selling off the entire hardware part of the business.Sources said Kno execs have recently decided that the quicker-than-expected uptake in tablet production by a multitude of powerful device makers had made its efforts to package a seamless offering less critical.Instead, the company will focus on offering its robust software and services to students on theApple iPad, as well as upcoming tablets based on Google's Android mobile operating system and others. The move is a dramatic shift for the company, which had not shipped significant numbers of the student-focused touch-screen device as it has long touted. In fact, Kno said in November that it would ship a $599 and $899 version of the tablet by the end of the year. The lower price was for its single-screen device, while the clamshell double-screen version was more expensive. And, although it has been reported no pre-orders were fulfilled, Kno did indeed ship several hundred of them, built by China's Foxconn, before stopping doing so earlier this year. Many have been dubious about Kno's ambitious hardware efforts. That's because marketing a new and complex product like the Kno takes a lot of effort and cash, especially since the market for mobile and portable computing products is increasingly competitive and includes Apple, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Google, Amazon, Dell, and many others.Kno recently raised another $46 million in funding to add to a $10 million round, and sources said that the Santa Clara, Calif., company was considering going back out to raise even more. Its current backers include prominent venture players like Andreessen Horowitz and First Round Capital, along with investors Mike Maples and Ron Conway.Sources said the shift to deliver textbooks and other student-related delivery systems would be a better path for all that investment money, since Kno has established a wide range of partnerships with colleges and universities. In addition, Kno co-founder Osman Rashid has a lot of experience in the digital education market. He was also the co-founder of Chegg, the textbook rental business that is reportedly aiming for an IPO soon.BusinessWeek is also reporting that Intel Capital was making the investment, but the post did not mention Advance's involvement or that Intel itself was taking over the hardware design business for Kno.Story Copyright (c) 2011 AllThingsD.

March 31 is World Backup Day.(Credit:Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET)Hello, world! Today it's your Backup Day. World Backup Day is a new idea promoted by a small team of Redditors, and it's a good idea. You can never be too careful when it comes to backing up.By the way, this is about your data, and not calling your buddies over for help in a hostile situation, which is not really my area of expertise. So let's talk backups!Basically it means putting your data in multiple places so that if something happens to one place (let's say you forget your laptop on the top of yourcar and subsequently back over it), that important PowerPoint presentation you've been working on isn't lost. Backing up is much easier than you might think. For example, if you've been working on an important essay, you can just e-mail it once in a while to your mom or to yourself. Just make sure you use an online free e-mail service, such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, or all of them. This goes for photos as well. If you remember to e-mail them to your mom when you have new ones (and she'll probably appreciate that very much), chances are she'll save them for you on her computer, and even if not, they are still in the Sent Items folder of your online e-mail account in case you have lost the originals.Obviously, e-mailing can only handle a relatively small amount of data and you'll have to remember to do that manually. If you have many files that need backing up, you'll want something more robust. This is when a backup plan is necessary.Online backupSimilar to e-mailing, an online backup plan provides you with a certain amount of storage space that you can access over the Internet, aka "the cloud." And no, your data is not flying in the sky, it's stored and managed on one or multiple servers located in different parts of the world. There are many online backup services, such as Amazon S3, McAfee, Mozy, or even Comcast. Most of these services offer a certain amount of storage space, like 2GB, for free. While 2GB doesn't seem like much, that's enough to hold about 500 songs or thousands of pages of Word documents, definitely more than enough to store your essays for the finals. In honor of World Backup Day, an online backup company called CrashPlan even offers a few lucky Twitter followers a free year's subscription. The advantages of online backup are that it's convenient and generally safe from disasters. However, it depends heavily on your connection to the Internet. For example, say you have a connection that offers 12Mbps upload speed. That would take about 20 minutes to back up the free 2GB of data. Existing very fast Internet connections at home (which most of us don't have) offer around 2Mbps upload speed at most. If you have lots of photos, songs, and even homemade movies that you need to keep safe, maybe it's better to think of something else.Local backupThis means you back up data on an external storage device, such as an external hard drive or a USB thumbdrive. The good news is that these devices are progressively getting larger in capacity, smaller in size, and cheaper in price. Examples of these are the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultraportable, Western Digital My Passport Studio , Clickfree C2N, and even the supercompact Lexar Echo MX backup drive. If you want something that can even survive disaster, such as fire or flood, the Solo Fireproof Waterproof hard drive from IoSafe is a good choice. Most of these drives come with free backup software to help you back up important data on a regular basis. Or you can use the operating system's built-in backup utilities to get the job done.Mac OS has the renowned Time Machine, andWindows 7 has Backup and Restore. You can make backups of the entire system by using software like Acronis' True Image, which enables you to quickly restore the whole system, not just important files, in the case of hard drive failure. Local backup is fast and can handle lots of data' however, generally you can only back up one computer at a time. If you have multiple computers at home and want to manage backups in one place, it's a good idea to think about network backup. Network backup This means you have one computer as a backup destination for all other computers. The best way to do this is by using a NAS server. Backing up is one of the main features of any NAS server, in addition to media streaming and so on. Using a NAS server, you can even store data directly on the server itself and access it from your computer. For backup purposes, it's good to get a NAS server that has multiple hard drives set up in a fault-tolerant RAID configuration, such as RAID 1 or RAID 5. Examples of these NAS servers are the Synology DS410, DS1511+, and DS411slim' Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4' and Seagate BlackArmor 440. A NAS server is generally a much bigger investment than an external hard drive, but in return it offers a lot more features and keeps your desk from getting cluttered with devices. Best practicesWith all the options above, the best practice when it comes to backing up is using all of them, when possible, and doing that regularly. If you have a NAS server, it's still a good idea to back up important data on a disaster-proof external hard drive or with an online service or both. For this reason, most NAS servers offer the option of automatically sending a portion of their data to the cloud. And all of them have USB ports to host an external storage device as a data backup destination. If you have a mobile device such as a smartphone, make sure you sync it with your computer regularly. If you have an iPhone, then a backup device such as the Iomega SuperHero is handy to have. It also doesn't hurt to keep e-mailing your mom. So there you go. Those are a few options you can choose for backing up your data. Remember that this is just a reminder. Backups need to be done regularly, not just today. For important documents, for example, you could back them up each time major changes have been made. April Fools' Day is around the corner, but today, treat this as serious business and back up your important data.

0 Vote(s)

An app developed by the UK Resuscitation Council may help doctors in emergency cardiac arrest situations, according to a study in the April issue of the journal Anaesthesia.Dr. Daniel Low developed the free iResus application.(Credit:Dr. Daniel Low 2011)Researchers recruited 31 doctors (average age 27.5 years) who had taken advanced life-support training in the past four years to investigate whether the free app, called iResus, can improve test scores in simulated cardiac emergencies. The doctors were divided into two groups--those who used iResus during the simulation and those who did not. Their knowledge and skills were evaluated using the CASTest scoring system during the simulated cardiac arrest emergency. Those who used the app averaged 84.5 out of 100 (ranging from 75.5 to 92.5), and those who did not averaged 72 (ranging from 61 to 87).It should not be surprising that the app, which uses adult and pediatric algorithms to provide prompts, performed better than mere human memory. This is why reference books exist, and the app is akin to a lightweight and interactive reference book that's compatible withiPhone,iPod Touch, andiPad. But the researchers at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, U.K., warn that the app needs to be put to the test in actual clinical settings before its usefulness is fully confirmed. For now, more than 60,000 copies of the app have been downloaded, according to Dr. Daniel Low, the consultant anesthetist who developed the application, in a news release. "A health care professional recently told us that they had used it when they were involved in an out-of-hospital pediatric emergency," he adds. "Being able to refer to pediatric drug doses they were unfamiliar with helped them to save a child's life."

0 Vote(s)

Access bookmarks and browsing history with the &quot'awesome screen&quot' on Firefox for Android.(Credit:Mozilla)Firefox for Mobile (download) is just one step away from its first Android release, as Mozilla announced the browser's release candidate today.&nbsp'Pending final testing, the mobile version of the popularFirefox browser will soon be available in full force on Android smartphones (the release candidate will be available beginning today in the Android Market). Firefox 4 will also work on the Maemo platform (download).I sat down with Mozilla to take a look at the upcoming changes and enhancements. I've always liked Mozilla's mobile design, which hides the nuts and bolts like setting and tabs in the "gutters" on either side of the browsing screen and can be reached by swiping right or left. The layout does expand the screen's real estate, but it also makes some features harder to access.A new default start screen puts some of those features back into focus with quick links to previously viewed Web pages, suggested Firefox add-ons, and most-recent tabs you've opened on other computers, the latter courtesy of Firefox Sync. The awesome bar--the combined address and search fields--has also received a little more awesomeness' it now pulls down as a screen to reveal your bookmarks, browsing history, and desktop tabs from Sync. Typing a few letters pulls up suggestions. In terms of usability, however, I was most impressed with improvements made to the browser's speed. Mozilla takes a risk releasing nightly and in-production builds, and Firefox in the past has not had the performance capabilities that the browser needs to be competitive. It can have all the cool and useful add-ons it wants, but if it's not fast, nobody will use it. Mozilla knows it, and the browsing speeds during our demo were heartening. We'll have more detailed benchmarks when the full release hits.In addition to smoother, faster browsing, I played with pinch and zoom and a new, yet very familiar fit-to-zoom gesture wherein double-tapping the screen zooms the content in to a full-width column. It's an easy way to focus in on one article on a Web site's splash page, for example.Copy/paste is an option for text fields, but not yet for content within a Web site. Hopefully that's a technical conundrum that Mozilla will be able to tackle in future versions. Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo will work ontablets as well as smartphones. On the technical side, it runs off the same engine (Gecko 2.0) driving the desktop version of Firefox 4, which is also due this week, and it supports HTML5.Again, this is the release candidate and not the full version, though we expect the full version to follow very soon.

0 Vote(s)

The first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental touches down at Boeing Field in Seattle on Sunday. The plane completed its maiden flight about four-and-a-half hours after taking off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)SEATTLE--With the beautiful snow-covered mountains of Washington state behind it, Boeing's 747-8 Intercontinental made its first-ever landing today, four-and-a-half hours after taking off on its maiden flight. The flight went about as well as could be expected, 747 chief pilot Mark Feuerstein said in a brief press conference at Boeing Field here, minutes after the plane touched down at 2:25 p.m. PT.Flawless first landing for Boeing's 747-8 Intercontinental (photos) The plane, with its unique red, orange, and white livery, took off at 9:58 a.m. PT from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., and headed immediately toward the Olympic Peninsula, Feuerstein told the crowd gathered for the landing celebration, and then ultimately out to the tip of Washington state. Along the way, he and co-pilot Paul Stemer took the plane, which is Boeing's longest, fastest, and in theory, most fuel- and cost-efficient ever, up to 20,000 feet and to 250 knots. They also flew it as slow as 105 knots during some of the approaches to stall tests. During the flight, they worked on a series of tests, including simple approaches to stalls, a couple of directional stability tests, and some functional checks of the airplane's systems. And, Feuerstein reported, everything went well, and the plane is "actually ready to go fly right now."Although Boeing made the first flight of the 747-8 freighter on February 8, 2010, it waited until today to put the passenger version of the plane in the air. But Feuerstein said that, from the pilot's perspective, the wait was worth it. During the interim, Boeing implemented many changes and upgrades to the five 747-8 freighters in its test fleet. But while each of those planes has had a slightly different set of updates, the Intercontinental has benefited from all the various changes made as part of the freighter program. "The changes we've made on the freighter have been rolled into this airplane," Feuerstein said of the Intercontinental. "All those changes have been rolled into one airplane."Boeing's 747-8 Intercontinental flies skyward (photos) One test that he and Stemer put the Intercontinental through today was what he called a "steady heading side slip," which involves putting "the rudder all the way to the floor, and keeping the airplane tracking in the same direction by rolling the airplane," Feuerstein said. Essentially, that means they were flying the plane "sideways, but in a straight line." The idea is that seeing how it performs in such a test "tells us a lot about how it behaves...fortunately, it didn't surprise us at all."Now that the first flight of the Intercontinental has been completed, Boeing plans on conducting about 600 hours of flight testing throughout the summer and fall, said Elizabeth Lund, the vice president and general manager of the 747 program. Then, sometime in the fourth quarter, she added, Boeing hopes to make its first customer delivery of the plane.

0 Vote(s)

Smoke rises from a stricken reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan.(Credit:Associated Press video, screenshot by Edward Moyer/CNET)The estimated death toll from Japan's crippling earthquake and tsunami was revised to more than 10,000 today as officials worked to prevent a nuclear disaster."The earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear incident have been the biggest crisis Japan has encountered in the 65 years since the end of World War II," Prime Minister Naoto Kan told a news conference today. "We're under scrutiny on whether we, the Japanese people, can overcome this crisis."Some 200 bodies were recovered today, and the official death toll from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami stood at 1,217 as of Sunday evening, Japanese police told The Chosunilbo, but that number is expected to climb to between 20,000 and 30,000. In one town alone, only 15,000 out of 75,000 were able to evacuate' the rest remain missing.Hoping to prevent a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, officials began venting the containment of reactor unit 3 through a controlled release of vapor intended to lower pressure inside the reactor structure, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported. Residents near the plant some 170 miles northeast of Tokyo evacuated the area after a quake-triggered power outage left a cooling system unable to supply water to cool the reactor. The original 2-mile evacuation radius has expanded to 12.5 miles and involves some 210,000 residents. The earthquake, which today was upgraded to a 9.0 magnitude from 8.9, left almost 2 million households without power in the freezing north and about 1.4 million without running water, the government said. Meanwhile, the benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average dropped 494 points, or 4.8 percent, to 9,760.45 as the market opened Monday--the first business day after the twin disasters. The Bank of Japan said Monday it would inject 7 trillion yen ($86 billion) into the financial system to help stabilize the market.

0 Vote(s)

Lime Wire has settled a copyright lawsuit brought against it by several music publishers.Yesterday's settlement puts to rest the copyright infringement suit filed in June against Lime Wire by more than 30 different music publishers, including the publishing arms of EMI Group, Sony, and Vivendi SA.The former file-sharing site and its founder Mark Gorton were sued last year by a bevy of music publishers and record companies over charges that the LimeWire service enabled its users to illegally download copyrighted songs. That suit followed a previous court ruling in a case involving the Recording Industry Association of America that found Lime Wire liable for copyright infringement. Lime Wire fought to stay alive but was eventually forced to shut down last year by the court.Details of the settlement weren't revealed, but both the company and Gorton were able to have all claims against them dismissed, according to Reuters. Commenting on the settlement, a spokesperson from the National Music Publishers Association issued the following statement sent to CNET:"We are pleased that this litigation is over. The parties worked hard to achieve a settlement that is a good result for all involved."That still leaves open a separate suit filed in December against Lime Wire by 23 different record companies, including Arista, Atlantic, Capitol Records, Motown, Sony BMG, Virgin, and Warner Brothers. That suit is set to go court on May 2.

0 Vote(s)

Apple's iPad 2 is thinner, lighter, and faster than the original, but is it different enough from last year's model to entice new customersThat's the big question. Apple sold more than 15 million iPads in 2010. But this week, when Apple introduced the newiPad 2, some people are disappointed that latest version was still missing key features and isn't much different from its predecessor. The device goes on sale in the U.S. on March 11. In this week's Ask Maggie, I help one reader decide if he should spend the extra cash on the iPad 2, or if he should take advantage of the reduced price on last year's model. I also explain the best options for getting 3G service on an iPad while traveling abroad. And I clear up a reader's question about getting 3G service for an iPad using a carrier other than AT&amp'T or Verizon Wireless. Ask Maggie is a weekly advice column that answers readers' wireless and broadband questions. If you've got a question, please send me an e-mail at maggie dot reardon at cbs dot com. And please put "Ask Maggie" in the subject header.iPad vs. iPad 2Dear Maggie,Great article regarding the iPad 2 launch! In your opinion, do you think that the new iPad is worth $100 more than the discounted existing iPad Especially for someone who doesn't use the cameraThanks so much,DavidDear David,This is a terrific question. It's one that I am considering myself. And I'll admit I am torn. The obvious reason to buy the first iPad over the iPad 2 is the cost. Apple just reduced the price of the older version of the iPad by $100, as you mentioned in your question. This means the least expensive 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad is now $399 instead of $499. And if you get a refurbished iPad through Apple's site, the price goes down $349. (If you're willing to get a used iPad elsewhere, you may even be able to get a cheaper price as many people will be looking to upgrade.)In terms of the design and function of the iPad 2, it's not much different from the older iPad. It's about 33 percent thinner and lighter. And as you mentioned it comes with front-facing and back-facing cameras that can be used for video conferencing. The older iPad doesn't have cameras. The new version of the iPad does use a faster dual-core processor and it has upgraded graphics inside that will supposedly make the graphics nine times faster. But so far I haven't heard many people complaining that the iPad is slow.If you don't need or want the video chat capability, and the weight or size of the older iPad doesn't bother you, I can see why you'd consider getting it instead of the iPad 2. I'm pretty cheap. And the $499 price tag of the cheapest iPad is a lot of money for me to spend on a gadget that is more of a "want" than a "need." So I definitely understand where you are coming from. To get a different perspective on this situation, I talked to my CNET colleague Josh Lowensohn, who covers Apple. Josh argues there are a number of reasons to get the newer iPad. The first reason he raised has to do with making sure your device is compatible with future applications. He believes new apps developed for the iPad will make use of the newer hardware, which means that these apps may not work at all on the older iPad. He said something similar happened when Apple improved the guts of theiPhone. There are certain application functions that can run on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 that can't run on the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. This app compatibility issue may be even more important when the next version of iOS comes out. Josh said that iOS 5 could add something to the software code that will allow new multi-core threaded apps to make use of both processor cores at once, which could result in some very interesting applications. "There's also the issue of load time," he said. "Who wouldn't want an iPad that can load apps, and switch between them faster"Josh also pointed out that Apple has a nasty habit of leaving out older hardware from future software updates. Apple did this when it moved to iOS 4 from iOS 3. So Josh's advice to you is this: "If he doesn't think he's going to buy another iPad on a yearly basis, then it would make more sense to invest a little bit more now to make sure you're not completely left out when the next version comes out."The bottom line really comes down to how much you're willing to spend on atablet now. If as Josh said, you want to keep this device for a while, you might want to think of this more as an investment and consider ponying up the extra $100 for the iPad 2. But if you're priority is to get the lowest possible price on a tablet, the original iPad, either new or refurbished, may be a good option for you. iPad 3G roaming in EuropeDear Maggie,Thanks for your informative articles and columns on mobile technology. I have a question about using the new iPad 2 in Europe. Is it possible to roam in Europe with the GSM iPad2 Can you recommend some sources for either renting or purchasing those odd-sized SIMS for internet/data access Thanks,EricDear Eric, It is possible to roam with your iPad 2 while traveling in Europe, but it's only possible for the AT&amp'T 3G version of the iPad or iPad 2 and not the Verizon Wireless version of the iPad 2. (Verizon uses a network technology called CDMA, which is not compatible with other carrier networks in Europe.)AT&amp'T offers an international roaming plan for its tablets. But it's pricey.20MB for 30 days at $24.9950MB for 30 days at $59.99100MB for 30 days at $119.99200MB for 30days at $199.99 If this is too expensive for you, then you could buy a prepaid SIM card when you get to destination. The iPad and iPad 2 are unlocked, so you can simply pop out the 3G SIM card from AT&amp'T and put in another SIM card from a foreign carrier. But there are a couple of things you have to keep in mind. First, the iPad, like the iPhone 4, uses a Micro SIM card. These are smaller than typical SIM cards used in most GSM cellphones. So you have two options in choosing a prepaid plan from a foreign carrier. You can either find a carrier that offers Micro SIM cards or you can get a Micro SIM cutter and cut a regular SIM card down to the size of the Micro SIM. The next issue you'll have to tackle is looking for and deciding on which prepaid data plan to get. The plans vary widely depending on the carrier and the country you are in. And if you are traveling to more than one country, it's further complicated by the fact that carriers charge lots of money when you use data across borders. For example, in Italy you have two options for a prepaid SIM card and the service is either either metered based on how much data you use or it's limited by time and the amount of data you use is unlimited. These options are probably less expensive than roaming using AT&amp'T's service, but it can be a huge hassle. I think your best option is to use Wi-Fi where ever you can while traveling. http://michael.tyson.id.au/mobile-broadband/Alternatives to 3G iPad accessDear Maggie,Thank you for your coverage of the iPad 2. With the USB camera adapter, is it possible to use a T-Mobile Rocket or Sprint 3G/4G USB U600 to gain Internet access through their networks Thank you again for all your hard work. Best Regards,LandistigDear Landistig,I applaud your creative thinking. But unfortunately, that won't work. The iPad Camera Connection Kit is designed only to transfer images and video from the iPhone or a digital camera onto the iPad. If you want 3G wireless service on your iPad you either have to buy the AT&amp'T version of the iPad or iPad 2 or the Verizon Wireless version of the iPad 2.If you want to use 3G service from another carrier to connect your iPad to the Internet, you can use a Mi-Fi device that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot. Sprint offers the Spring Overdrive, which is device that creates a mobile hot spot and connects to Sprint's 3G/4G network. In fact, Verizon has been selling its Mi-Fi solution with the original iPad for several months. The 2010 iPad only connects directly to a 3G wireless service in the U.S. using AT&amp'T's network.

0 Vote(s)

The new solar carport at Mennen Arena in Morris County, N.J., is part of the Morris Model solar financing plan.(Credit:Tioga Energy)In the last eight months, Morris County, N.J., has undergone a significant energy change of which many of its residents are probably not even aware. The partners involved call it the "Morris Model." It's a new financing model that allows municipalities to partner with solar-energy companies to incorporate solar energy into their energy portfolio for little outlay. In June the Morris County Improvement Authority (MCIA) announced it was entering into this Morris Model financing plan with Tioga Energy and SunDurance Energy to install about 3-megawatts worth of solar panels by offering up something it already had: property.Yesterday, the MCIA and Tioga Energy announced Morris County's solar installation was complete and, so far, a financial success. While there are many property-for-discount-energy programs going on, this one is unique. The William G. Mennen Sports Arena gets 30 percent of its electricity from its newly installed solar panels.(Credit:Tioga Energy)Specifically, the MCIA issued $22.3 million in low-interest government bonds to cover the cost of the initial installation. Tioga Energy--the solar-energy company that owns and operates the systems, and sells the solar electricity back to the municipality--used federal income tax incentives unavailable to municipalities, and New Jersey's Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SREC) program to cover more of the costs. As part of the agreement, Tioga Energy then passed the money it earned from the incentives and SRECs on to Morris County in the form of discounted electricity. SunDurance Energy, working in conjunction with Tioga Energy, designed and installed the solar-energy system configurations for each property. The pilot program's swift eight-month completion is a test case that could offer a win-win solution for both cash-strapped municipalities and solar-energy companies looking for business. Keep in mind, however, that this Morris Model would only work in states with SREC programs. The county also had the benefit of being home to a local sports complex with lots of roof and parking space on which 1.6 megawatts of the 3.1-megawatts worth of solar panels could be installed. In states with legislated Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), energy companies and utilities are required to either use a certain percentage of alternative energy or buy SRECs to make up the difference. According to the terms of New Jersey's SREC program, Tioga Energy earns one SREC for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours of solar electricity it generates, and is then able to sell those SRECs. The money it makes from the sale of the SRECs is being passed on to Morris County via savings on its electricity bills through a 15-year power purchase agreement.MCIA says the electricity generated from this program costs 35 percent less than what its local utility is charging them for electricity. To date Morris County now has 3.1 megawatts of solar power, has solar panels installed on 19 properties (16 of them schools and government buildings) and has saved $3.8 million in electricity costs, according to the MCIA.Most interesting to New Jersey natives may be that one of the properties being used for solar paneling by the county is the William G. Mennen Sports Arena, Morris County's 2,500-seat arena which includes three ice rinks, and an outdoor rugby field. In addition to the Mennen Arena roof, a solar carport now covers Mennen Arena's 500-space parking lot. Together, the roof and carport solar panels totaling 1.6 megawatts, generate 30 percent of the arena's electricity.

0 Vote(s)

Where most people see a pile of leftovers or yard waste, Paul Sewell sees a revenue stream, delivering energy and valuable nutrients.Sewell is the CEO of 3-year-old Harvest Power, a company formed to take recycling to the next level. Paper, metals, and plastics account for about 60 percent of municipal solid waste. The next hill to climb is waste that originally came from the ground: wood, yard trimmings, and now food scraps, which altogether are more than 30 percent of that waste stream. "We look at it as next-generation solar," said Sewell. "We're capturing sunlight in the form of biomass in a stable form. And we have the ability to use biological systems to get the maximum benefit out of it."Garbage to gold: Ways to get value from waste (Images) There are a growing number of experimental technologies being developed for turning organic waste back into something valuable, driven both by environmental and financial reasons. One method Harvest Power is pursuing, called anaerobic digestion, has been around for decades and is already used at wastewater treatment plants and farms, more so in Europe. Anaerobic digesters use microorganisms in an oxygen-starved tank to convert organic material into compost fertilizer and biogas. That gas, made mostly of methane, can be burned to make heat or electricity. Fuel cells can also use biogas instead of natural gas to generate electricity, something already being done at wastewater plants in California. At the consumer level, organic collection is largely limited to yard waste, which is converted into compost soil fertilizer. Now, a handful of municipalities, including San Francisco, are starting to expand into collecting food waste, diverting more waste from landfills or incinerators. "Recycling has kind of peaked. The only way we can reach our recycling goals is by adding more organics, so we're promoting it and working with industry," said Sumner Martinson, the composting program director at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The ability to generate a second product--renewable energy--from waste in addition to a soil fertilizer is another reason there's more interest. "If you can generate some energy and have some energy to sell to the grid, then it's economically more cost effective," Martinson said, adding that municipal composters can be big energy consumers.Tipping fees and sustainabilityIt's not hard to understand why energy entrepreneurs and municipalities are looking to turn more garbage into gold. In the U.S., there's a lot of it and it's expensive to remove, with many locations, particularly in dense population centers, trucking trash to other states. And decomposing material in landfills gives off methane, a potent greenhouse gas.In 2009, there were 243 million tons of municipal solid waste in the U.S., translating into an average of more than four pounds of waste per person per day, which is just a fraction of the waste from commercial and industrial sources, according to the EPA. Recyclers will pay for plastics, metals, and paper because they can sell that material, once separated, to mills which use it as raw material. The diversion of 82 million tons from landfills for recycling in 2009 is the equivalent of taking 33 millioncars off the road for a year, according to the EPA.But after growing rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, recycling rates have tapered off, standing now at about 33 percent. Services such as single-stream recycling can help boost those rates. But there is still a sizeable portion of household garbage, about 35 percent of the total pile, which comes in the form of wood, yard trimmings, and food scraps. Digging through a high-tech recycling center (photos) View the full galleryThe region around Vancouver, British Columbia, was looking at adding more incinerators or landfills, but met public opposition on both plans. In response, the 18 municipalities in the area formed an aggressive plan to reduce their waste disposal by 70 percent in 2015 and 80 percent by 2020 to avoid siting problems. They expanded to collecting food scraps, which includes pretty much everything from the kitchen--soiled paper, napkins, bones, meat, fruit, vegetables. Food scraps can be included with yard waste, which has been collected since the 1990s, in garbage bags with a special decal or paper yard waste bags. Now, they plan to go beyond composting, too.In a $12 million project, Harvest Power will start construction of an anaerobic digester that will produce both compost and capture usable energy. The gas from the decomposing material will be captured and used to make electricity to power the plant or piped into the natural gas pipeline, said Suzanne Bycraft, the manager of fleet and environmental programs from the City of Richmond in British Columbia which will host the facility. The digester speeds up natural decomposition, taking weeks rather than months.Reducing greenhouse gases from landfills for incinerators was a big reason for the investment in the anaerobic digester, but there's a financial incentive as well. Right now, the tipping fee rates are almost $100 per ton of municipal solid waste. Although cities need to pay a contractor to collect more material, Richmond saved about $350 million on disposal fees last year, said Bycraft."As the tipping fees increase, it becomes more and more economical to divert that material into a composting facility at a lower rate than a landfill," she said. "It's certainly a more sustainable approach and sustainability is becoming a priority in our region."Digging deeper stillFor decades, landfills have captured methane from decomposing organic material or operated incinerators, which Bycraft said are less polluting than they used to be. But a handful of waste-to-energy companies are eyeing municipal solid waste, and other forms of biomass, as cheap feedstock. For an idea of the possibilities, consider the activities of hauling giant Waste Management. The company has been operating dozens of waste-to-energy facilities for years. In Southern California, captured landfill gas is being converted into natural gas fuel for 300 of its collection vehicles. Over the past few years, it has invested in technology companies which promise better energy extraction and a more benign environmental footprint. Montreal-based Enerkem, for example, is in the process of building two commercial-scale facilities that use gasification to convert municipal solid waste or wood residue into a synthetic gas, which can then be turned into ethanol or other chemicals.Waste Management, along with oil refiner Valero Energy, last year invested in Terrabon, a company which also uses gasification but its end product is a gasoline replacement. Another waste company with another thermo-conversion technology planning a pilot project is S4 Solutions, a joint venture of Waste Management and InEnTec, which has a gasification process for making different gaseous fuels and chemicals.Whether these alternative waste-to-energy processes take hold remains to be seen. One of the big challenge is making them economically compelling and scaling them up, said Waste Management company representative Wes Muir.Harvest Power's Sewell says just getting energy through landfill gas capture and incineration is selling the value of the organic waste stream short. In addition to the embedded energy, people should also consider how the carbon and nutrients are being repurposed to improve soil quality."Call it my farming background, but we need soil. We forget that it supports our agricultural and food production system," he said.

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's Matt Cutts climbed Mount Kilimanjaro last year, and if he&39's part of your social landscape, content that he has authored or shared could now rank higher in your personalized Google results.(Credit:Google)Google's putting a little more attention into social cues when it comes to returning search results. Over the course of the day Google will start rolling out new social search features that more prominently display content that connections on social networks like Twitter have shared. Google's been doing that for a while, but in the slums of the search results page: all the way at the bottom. Now those results will appear interspersed with regular search results when you're signed into Google and someone on a social network that you have connected to your Google profile shares a link, with a note under the result telling you who shared the link and where. Twitter seems to be the big winner here, but any account linked to one's Google profile can be featured in results. Those results won't be displayed to all searchers: you'll see individual results when signed into Google based off of friends and connections within the Google world (Gmail, Chat, Google Buzz) who publicly share sites through those services or externally linked services like Twitter or LinkedIn. Google's also making it possible for users to privately link accounts to their Google Profiles. It's all part of Google's ongoing and mostly fruitless attempts to make social-media connections a greater part of its search results. One of Google's biggest priorities at the moment is finding a way to stay relevant as an information source as more and more people share information in social networks, and as more and more sites try to game Google's results. This is a long-term problem, but it's a problem nonetheless that is getting a lot of attention internally. One huge issue is the closed nature of Facebook, the king of the social-media world: Google's all-seeing Web crawlers can't penetrate Facebook's services and that has caused tension between the two companies. Google is expected to roll out more social services over the coming year, having discussed plans to add social layers to existing products as opposed to trying to build a network of its own. Past attempts at that--such as Orkut and Google Buzz--haven't made an impact.Updated 11:05 a.m. PST to clarify exactly who sees the social results.

0 Vote(s)

Movie rental company Redbox is trying to improve its standing in the mobile market. The company announced today that it has launched a new Android application that will allow its customers to look through available titles, find one of its kiosks around the U.S., and reserve films from the app. In addition, it updated itsiPhone app to make the software more responsive to users when they rent movies. The app also now supports box art.Redbox's iPhone app has performed well. The free application has been downloaded over 2 million times since its launch in December 2009, the company said.Redbox, which is owned by Coinstar, offers DVD and Blu-ray rentals at 26,000 kiosks around the United States. The company recently came off a difficult fourth quarter, missing revenue and profit forecasts due to the impact rental delays had on its operation."Overall, the performance of the Redbox business during the fourth quarter was not in line with our forecast," Coinstar CEO Paul Davis said in a statement at the time. "This was Redbox's first holiday season with 28-day delayed titles, and we underestimated the impact that the delay would have on demand during the fourth quarter."Redbox is currently required to wait 28 days before it can rent content from Warner Bros., Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Twentieth Century Fox. Those delays helped studios increase sales during the fourth quarter and prompted the rental firm to miss its forecasted rentals by a whopping 14 million units. In addition to service improvements in the mobile business, Redbox recently updated its Web site to aid customers in picking films they want to watch. Customers are able to reserve up to five films at a time before they head down to their local kiosk to pick them up.Redbox's iPhone app and Android app are available for free in the App Store and Android Market, respectively.

0 Vote(s)

Tendril is trying to make the smart grid smarter about people. The company announced today the release of Energize, an application that seeks to improve energy efficiency with a simple user interface and techniques borrowed from the field of behavioral science.Grounded Power has tested out its home energy application via municipal utilities in Massachusetts. (Credit:Tendril)The product combines Tendril's software for managing home energy with tools that Tendril gained from its acquisition last year of Grounded Power, a small company with experience in smoking cessation efforts and other programs that rely on social psychology. There are dozens of companies that make dashboards to give consumers a real-time display of their energy use via the Web or a dedicated device. These dashboards are meant to help consumers save energy, but experts say that successful efficiency programs depend heavily on what information is presented to consumers and how.The Energize application seeks to get consumers actively involved by setting energy efficiency goals, measuring them, and then sharing them with others. The application can be accessed from Internet-connected devices such as smartphones or dedicated displays, or presented with paper reports. Opower is another company that has successfully used behavioral psychology, data analytics, and Web-based tools to improve utility efficiency programs. The announcement from Tendril, one of the most established smart-grid companies, was made at the DistribuTech utility conference. A number of consumer-oriented smart-grid programs are aimed at reducing peak-time power use and increasing customer efficiency.Late last week, Tendril announced a deal with Whirlpool in which the latter plans to make connected, or smart, appliances that can be managed by Tendril's Connect software.

0 Vote(s)

iOS devices were the most popular new devices activated using Good Technology&39's enterprise software, according to a study the company released today.(Credit:Good Technology)Apple has said many times that theiPhone andiPad are gaining popularity with enterprise-level businesses. We've heard most recently that the iPad is either being used or tested for use at "more than 80 percent" of Fortune 100 companies, according to Apple COO Tim Cook. Today, a company that makes enterprise software is providing additional evidence that corporate customers are warming to the iPad, with details on which industries are embracing it already.Good Technology makes enterprise software for mobile devices (Good For Enterprise), and over the last year has been tracking which devices its clients put its software on. Using data gleaned from more than 2,000 clients, Good found that during the fourth quarter of 2010, more than 65 percent of all activations using its software were on iOS devices--which means iPhones and iPads. iPad activations grew from 14 percent of all new devices to 22 percent of all new devices during that same time period. The most activated devices Good saw during the quarter were, in order, iPhone 4, iPad, iPhone 3GS, Motorola Droid X, andMotorola Droid 2. Overall, Android phones remained about a third of new devices activated during the quarter, roughly the same as the previous three months, according to the study. For the first time, there were no Windows Mobile or Symbian devices in the top 10 most activated new devices, Good found. It should be noted that Windows Phone 7 is not included since Good doesn't support that platform yet, and all BlackBerry software is run off the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, so Good does not have access to data regarding activations of RIM's smart phone devices. We also get some detail on where the iPad is being used. Good found that the industry its customers are most using the iPad in are financial services, followed by health care, legal/professional services, high tech, government/public sector, and wholesale/retail.Apple obviously has a head start in tablets since the iPad has been available since April 2010, but in the coming year it should have some competition. There are several Android tablets expected to be released this year, as well as WebOS tablets from Hewlett-Packard, which is a heavyweight when it comes to enterprise customers. But the biggest challenge for tablet adoption in enterprise is likely to come from RIM, which, as previously mentioned, won't be included in Good's numbers. The PlayBook is expected to go on sale this year as a companion device to the BlackBerry, which has been long-entrenched in the corporate world.

0 Vote(s)

Stylish yet unique, with a premium sound, generous extras, and a down-to-earth price, the Sound Platform came out of nowhere to deliver a product few others can match. So this year, in spite of being torn in a dozen different directions to covertablets atCES, I made time to visit SoundFreaq to see what they're cooking. For their sophmore product, SoundFreaq is going smaller, more portable, and more affordable. The SFQ-02 Sound Step is a 2.1 speaker dock, due out this summer for $149. It doesn't have the tiny, retro knobs of the original, but core features such as A2DP Bluetooth streaming,iPod/iPhone/iPad support, FM radio, remote control, and UQ3 audio enhancement are all still here. The Sound Step boasts some advantages over its predecessor, as well. For one, it includes a built-in lithium-ion battery, offering up around 6 hours of cord-free music. There's a video output, making it a suitable little soundbar to keep near your TV. And finally, the dock connection has been raised up, making it possible to dock an iPad (even one that's wrapped in a case). To see the SFQ-02 Sound Step in all its minimal glory, head over to our photo gallery.SoundFreaq SFQ-02 Sound Step (photos)

0 Vote(s)

The report, which surveyed 17,619 households over the six months that ended in June, also showed a 2 point rise of cell-phone-only households among late-twentysomethings compared with the previous six months.Looking at other age groups, around 40 percent of people 18 to 24 and 30 to 34 live in cell phone-only households. After the age of 35, that figures drops off until age 65 when only 5 percent of the people are in households with cell phones only.Meanwhile, almost 40 percent of households with children under 3 rely on cell phones alone.Overall, the CDC found that 26 percent of U.S. homes used only wireless phones, while another 16 percent received all or almost all their calls on a cell phone even though they still have landlines. The findings in general and among the various age groups are significant because they show that cell-phone-only households aren't prevalent just among younger, single people, according to Stephen Blumberg, the report's author. Blumberg told the Associated Press the numbers suggest that young adults who use cell phones alone continue that habit as they have families."It's a sign that wireless-only is no longer strictly tied to a lifestyle of being young and restless," Blumberg told the AP.

0 Vote(s)

Rubin showed off the unreleased prototype tablet at the opening session of D: Dive Into Mobile in San Francisco today, the same day that the company announced plans to ship Gingerbread, Android version 2.3. Honeycomb and the Motorola tablet will arrive at some point next year, Rubin said, showing off the Google Maps application and eliciting more than one "oooh" from the crowd of mobile professionals. He declined to provide any further details about the tablet. Rubin was grilled on many Android-related topics by hosts Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher of D: All Things Digital. He was granted a few minutes to show off the Nexus S, the new phone announced by Google this morning that will run Gingerbread on a Google-specified and Samsung-built smartphone. When pressed on Google's Nexus strategy in general, which has evolved in starts and fits throughout 2010, Rubin admitted "we bit off a little more than we could chew" when it came to trying to promote theNexus One as a start-of-the-art Google-designed phone and the centerpiece of a smartphone-buying strategy that was intended to match intriguing phones with the carrier of one's choice, which is a popular approach in the U.K., he said. However, U.S. carriers were less supportive of the idea. Google dropped the idea of the Web-only store for the Nexus S, scaling back its ambitions and working with Best Buy to distribute the phone, which is available either unlocked or with a two-year contract for T-Mobile's network. The carriers have a fair amount of control over how Android is presented to consumers, but that was always Google's intention, Rubin said. Google has been criticized for allowing carriers to clutter up the Android interface with pet apps that Mossberg charitably referred to as "craplets," but Rubin said the carriers are starting to understand those practices alienate consumers, and he implied that Android carriers are rethinking that strategy. Still, "those guys would be commoditized if I forced them to all look the same," Rubin said. One of the reasons Android has done as well as it has is because carriers and handset makers want an alternative to Apple'siPhone or Research In Motion's BlackBerry, but they don't want to turn into the HP, Dell, and Acer of the PC world, beholden to Microsoft and Intel for innovation and left with no other way to distinguish themselves from the competition other than price. Despite the rancor that often characterizes the once-close relationship between Google and Apple, Rubin took time to praise Apple for what he said Apple has done right, namely services like the App Store, and even going so far as to acknowledge that its developer program is relatively "open," a word that Google's Vic Gundotra and CEO Eric Schmidt never use in referring to Apple in its approach toward third-party software development. A true Googler, Rubin went on to point out that Google is more "open" in its approach to how it allows outsiders to review the source code of Android in addition to unrestricted development. Still, it was a bit surprising to hear a senior Google executive use the word "open" with respect to Apple. In further discussion about the competition, Rubin said Microsoft'sWindows Phone 7 was "a good 1.0 product," but he said if he was asked for advice, he would implore them to find a better way to allow the differentiation he referred to earlier among its hardware partners. The problem for companies like Microsoft, Nokia, and even RIM is that much of their code is simply old, dating back from a time before the smartphone revolution was fully realized by Apple's iPhone, he said. Rubin was very coy about discussions that Google may or may not have had with Nokia about the possibility of the world's largest smartphone vendor adopting Android under its new leadership, after an outgoing Nokia executive compared the strategy of using Android to that of young boys urinating in their pants to stay warm in cold weather. When pressed, Rubin declined to comment on any specific negotiations in either Finland or Mountain View, refusing to confirm or deny that talks had been held. Later, Rubin admitted that Android could do a better job when it comes to usability, lending weight to the notion that Android is an engineer's operating system as opposed to one designed for tech novices. He promised that future releases such as Honeycomb would do a better job of exposing vital functions to users without requiring them to navigate through a sea of menus. "You'll see the fruits of that investment in the tablets first, and then the phones," Rubin said. "We're aware of the problem and we're going to do better." Updated 9:20 p.m. PT throughout with additional information from the event.

0 Vote(s)

The official Star Wars site has complete instructions on making the DIY R2-D2 version of the dreidel from paper. Hopefully, Darth Vader won't steal your chocolate gelt while the Droidel's got your eyes. The first day of Hanukkah is always special, especially when you gather with family and friends to light the menorah with your...iPhone Yep, in yet another case of "there's an app for that," developer Matthew Parrott believes hisiPhone app iMenorah is perfect "for the Jew far from home." The app, which costs $2.99 (oy vey!) lets you virtually light eight candles with a digital shamash. A voice on the app sings blessings, including the Shehechiyanu, a prayer recited on special occasions. Unfortunately, the app vocals sound a little stale, but iMenorah appears to present about the most realistic-looking menorah in the App Store.
Microsoft's new smartphone platform is off to what could be considered a slower start than expected in North America. That's according to The Street, which has released a report saying that the company sold some 40,000 units on its first day on the market. That number does not come from Microsoft, which has not yet released sales numbers and refused to comment to both The Street and CNET, but rather a source in a market research firm. Windows Phone 7, which is the follow-up to Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, hit shelves in the U.S. and Canada on Monday. Before that, WP7 devices had come to stores in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in late October.CNET hoofed it to two major carrier stores in San Francisco on launch day and came back with the impression that both the inventory and sales of the launch devices had been quite low, though the scene had been different in other cities and retail locations, where some stores were selling out. Early sales numbers from other phone platform launches include Apple's estimated 500,000 iPhones being snatched up during its launch weekend in 2007, and a million and a half G1 Android phones (the first Android device on the market) being bought up by T-Mobile subscribers in the phone's first six months. Those numbers have since improved with later device launches on the same platform such as theiPhone 3G and 3GS which both hit a million units in their first weekend on sale, as well as the iPhone 4, which sold 1.7 million units in its first weekend. Google too recently pegged Android activations as being north of 200,000 a day.Despite the reported low sales, reviews of many of the launch devices, as well as theWindows Phone 7 OS itself have been quite positive.

0 Vote(s)

Google CEO Eric Schmidt told all Google employees they can expect a 10 percent raise in the new year.(Credit:Google)In an apparent move to stave off defections to competitors, Google announced it is giving all its employees a $1,000 cash bonus and a raise of 10 percent, according to a source familiar with the matter. The raises, which take affect January 1, 2011, apply to all 25,000 employees at the Internet giant, according to an e-mail to employees penned by Google CEO Eric Schmidt and first revealed by Business Insider. "We want to make sure that you feel rewarded for your hard work," Schmidt wrote. "We want to continue to attract the best people to Google." In addition to the raise and bonus, Google will move a portion of employees' bonuses into their base salaries, ensuring that they received the entire amount, Schmidt said in his e-mail:CONFIDENTIAL: INTERNAL ONLY GOOGLERS ONLY (FULL TIME AND PART TIME EMPLOYEES)I'm pleased to share some very, very good news with Googlers worldwide. But first let me say, on behalf of everyone on the management team, that we believe we have the best employees in the world. Period. The brightest, most capable group of this size ever assembled. It's why I'm excited to come to work every day--and I'm sure you feel the same way. We want to make sure that you feel rewarded for your hard work, and we want to continue to attract the best people to Google. So that is why we've decided...to give all of you a 10% raise, effective January 1st. This salary increase is global and across the board--everyone gets a raise, no matter their level, to recognize the contribution that each and every one of you makes to Google. There's more. We've heard from your feedback on Googlegeist and other surveys that salary is more important to you than any other component of pay (i.e., bonus and equity). To address that, we're moving a portion of your bonus into your base salary, so now it's income you can count on, every time you get your paycheck. That's also effective January 1st. You'll be receiving an email shortly with further details about these changes to your compensation. And one last thing...today we're announcing that everyone will get a holiday cash bonus, too.Googlers, you are what makes this company great, and our goal here is to recognize you for your contribution, in a way that's meaningful to you. Thank you for all that you do, and for making Google a place where magic happens.EricA Google spokesperson said retaining employees was key to the company but did not elaborate. "While we don't typically comment on internal matters, we do believe that competitive compensation plans are important to the future of the company," the spokesperson said. The move comes as Google grapples with a wave of high-profile defections to Facebook. Last month, Lars Rasmussen, one of the lead engineers behind Google Maps and Google Wave, announced he had left the Internet search giant for Facebook. Rasmussen told the Sydney Morning Herald that Facebook's offer was "much more compelling both financially and in terms of the work there."At his new employer, Rasmussen joins former Googlers Bret Taylor, Facebook's chief technology officer, who was part of the Google Maps team, and Carl Sjogreen, now a product manager at Facebook, who was also involved with Google Maps.
Mark your calendars, Facebook masses. November 17 is National Unfriend Day, as declared by late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. "Friendship is a sacred thing, and I believe Facebook is cheapening it," he says. "I go on this Facebook and I see people with thousands of what they call friends, which is impossible--you can't have a thousand friends." So Kimmel suggests examining your list of Facebook friends and only keeping the real friends (you know, as in people who've actually breathed the same air as you). Good idea, Mr. Kimmel. According to Robin Dunbar, a professor of anthropology at Oxford University, our brains can't keep up with more than 150 friends anyhow. So, why not Go ahead and use National Unfriend Day as an excuse to "clean up" your friends list guilt-free.It&39's not you, it&39's your annoying status updates. I promise.(Credit:Karmaloop.com)But before you go on an unfriending rampage, consider the following advice: 1. Keep watch on your frenemies. These days, it seems like the immediate response to being insulted or betrayed is, "OMG I'm going to delete them from Facebook." But don't forget this saying: Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. If life is a battlefield, then for some, Facebook is the front line. Take advantage of it. You don't have to interact with your enemies (er, frenemies), but you can use the News Feed to keep tabs on them.2. Value their information. Facebook isn't only about maintaining friendships. Consider other ways in which your potential unfriendees interact with Facebook. Do they post interesting or helpful links Are they an expert in a field that's relevant to your work Remember that most people have something valuable to offer, so consider a person's knowledge, skill set, and connections before unfriending. 3. Consider privacy settings. If you're inclined to unfriend someone to protect your privacy, there are other ways to hide your information without deleting someone. You can choose to hide your wall, photos, status updates, or other content from just a few people--or entire groups of people. Also very useful is the ability to control specific posts. Check out this Facebook privacy guide for a clear explanation. Thank you, Facebook. 4. Control your news feed. Some people are obnoxious status updaters who simply clog your News Feed and put a damper on your Facebook experience with gems like, "I'm so sad. Why do I always get this upset *tear*'" "Damnit! I forgot to put sugar in my coffee'" or "OMG, I just bought the best stuff ever! Neener." Sure, their behavior may warrant an unfriending, but you have another option: Hide them from your News Feed. Next time they post something like, "Dontcha wish ur gurlfriend was hawt like me" mouse over the update, and an "X" button will appear. Click the X and select "Hide all by _______". Their posts will no longer appear in your timeline. If you change your mind (or they change their habits), you can undo this setting. 5. Define your "friends." Ask yourself, "How do I want to use Facebook" Set some guidelines, like whether or not you'll add work friends, acquaintances, business contacts, blog readers, and so on. Or maybe you'll only add people you're really friends with. Whatever you decide, stick with it--not only will it help prevent future unfriending, it'll also remind you who you've given permission to view your content.6. Don't add them in the first place. Unless it's the rare "friends at first sight," don't send a friend request to someone after meeting them for the first time. It's an obvious I'm-adding-you-because-we-officially-met-and-now-I-can-Facebook-stalk-you move. You may find that you and this person never meet again, or your "friendship" fizzles due to your premature friend request that forcefully bypassed the real-life steps necessary to build a real friendship. Admit it, you only wanted to look at their photos. 7. The friend-purging status update. In the spirit of National Unfriend Day, you've decided to delete those unworthy of your profile. Well done. Now, sign off Facebook and be satisfied with your actions. Don't send the following message to the friends who made the cut: "If you're seeing this status update that means I like you enough to still be my friend!!!!!" Again, don't do it. It's arrogant.

0 Vote(s)

commentary Mark Hurd is now a Silicon Valley symbol for self-destructive behavior. On Friday, The Wall Street Journal and Fortune magazine published detailed reports on what prompted the HP board to ask then-CEO Hurd to resign in August. The stories paint a picture of a reckless man who was given the trust and support of HP's board only to repay that trust with betrayal. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, B-movie actress Jodie Fisher, who accused former HP CEO Mark Hurd of sexual harassment, also alleged Hurd touched her body in 'sexually suggestive ways.' The man whose face is obscured is not Mark Hurd. (Credit:Jodie Fisher&39's Facebook page. ) The reports should finally silence the critics who slammed HP's board after Hurd was forced out of HP, after five years as CEO. Up to now, we knew few details about what led up to Hurd's ouster, outside of the allegations that he lied on his expense report and was accused of sexually harassing Jodie Fisher, an HP contract employee and former actress. The Journal and Fortune stories flesh out many more details that seem to support the board's choice for firing Hurd. They really had no choice. But make up your own mind. Read the Fortune and Journal stories and put yourself in the shoes of HP's directors. Imagine one day that Hurd, your CEO, tells you he's been accused of sexual harassment and that he's innocent of all wrongdoing. Then he tells you the accuser is a former soft-core porn actress hired by him to greet important clients at company mixers and that he has flown her all over the country for two years on the company's dime. He has done all this even though she occupies a low-level public relations position at HP and has little prior experience. Imagine that the woman, Fisher, who once appeared nude in Playboy and in several B-movies, has accused the CEO of touching her body in sexually suggestive ways. You learn that Fisher has hired attorney Gloria Allred, famous for her ability to stir public outrage against those her clients accuse of misconduct. Then imagine that with the threat of scandal looming, investigators find evidence that he lied about some of his contacts with Fisher and that he didn't know about her past in racy films. Do you believe him when he denies having sex with her despite knowing he has met her twice alone in her hotel room, and on several other occasions for reasons not related to work Mark Hurd denied any wrongdoing in his dealings with Jodie Fisher and later lashed out at the HP board. Maybe you chuckle nervously when informed the former actress wasn't hired from among HP's legion of experienced PR reps or through an employment agency but was recruited by one of Hurd's underlings who saw her compete on a reality TV show. On the show, older women compete against younger women for the affections of a tennis pro. Is this a recruiting pool worthy of HP Maybe you start to get really nervous when you learn the actress has claimed the CEO told her about HP's plans to acquire Electronic Data Systems months before the deal was done. A question might flash into your mind as to whether the information was true and, if so, whether Fisher or someone connected to her traded stock as a result. Amid all this, you learn your CEO also filed false expense reports, some of them related to contacts with Fisher. Sooner or later, your mind is likely to drift back to another incident where Hurd's flexible ethics helped drag HP into the most reputation-blackening scandal in company history. In 2006, HP's chairwoman, Patricia Dunn, elected to plug news leaks coming from the company's boardroom by hiring detectives to ferret them out. She OKed the use of some dubious investigative practices, some of which are now illegal, to hunt down the leaks. Hurd acknowledged giving his approval to some of these practices as well as to the overall investigation. Dunn resigned and HP had to suffer through embarrassing public hearings on Capitol Hill. This is where you might ask yourself some basic and reasonable questions: Wouldn't a guy with any kind of judgment or moral compass have steered HP away from the lamebrain spying activities Shouldn't the CEO of the country's largest tech company have enough smarts to avoid the kind of relationship he had with Fisher Even if it were innocent, he put himself and his company into a compromising position. Then there are the expense reports, the tales about being unaware of Fisher's background, and the apparent attempts to cover up his relationship with her. Wouldn't you ask yourself, if this guy is capable of this kind of deceit, what else is he capable of doing In that situation, you might ask what would happen if you looked the other way and kept him on as CEO, and then he later committed some other, more harmful misdeed. You would know that this Fisher fiasco would come out and you'd be on the hook for not doing anything about him sooner. Don't you think all the people who lost their shirts on Enron stock wish the board there had done something sooner about founder Ken Lay In the late 1980s, years before the company collapsed, Lay prevented investors from learning about $100 million in losses. The board gave him another chance. Lay repaid them by leading Enron into one of the country's largest accounting frauds. Does a board have to wait for an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission or for a CEO to be indicted before determining he's not morally fit to run a company If so, isn't that the kind of inaction that boards have been criticized for in the past and the stuff that investor lawsuits are made ofI hope HP's board is an example to others. A company shouldn't let some guy with a string of positive quarters under his belt ignore the rules--for his sake, as well as the sake of investors.

0 Vote(s)

Japanese electronics giant and battery manufacturer Panasonic has invested $30 million in Tesla Motors, the U.S. automaker best-known for its all-electric luxury sportscar, both companies announced Thursday.Per the terms of the deal, Panasonic, which already has a working relationship with Tesla through their battery pack collaboration, purchased Tesla common stock at $21.15 per share, acquiring approximately a 2 percent stake in the company.Tesla and Panasonic had an existing relationship before today, signing a deal in January to develop lithium-ion battery packs for Tesla cars.(Credit:Tesla Motors)Tesla, which also builds power trains for use in electric vehicles in addition to manufacturing cars, has previously used battery components from a variety of companies. But the company announced Thursday that it "has selected Panasonic as its preferred lithium-ion battery cell supplier for its battery packs."The investment coincides with Panasonic's changing dynamic and vow to reshape itself around new core businesses. It's been expanding its battery business into EV batteries since 2008, is in the process of overhauling its lithium-ion battery cell research and production facilities, and announced in 2009 that it would invest $1 billion in developing products focused ongreen tech by 2012, including technology for home-energy monitoring systems. The deal is a feather in the cap of Tesla, a relatively new car company that has been slowly building a following and brand, but until August 2009 had not yet turned a profit."It is an honor and a powerful endorsement of our technology that Panasonic, the world's leading battery cell manufacturer, would choose to invest in and partner with Tesla," Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk said in a statement.Panasonic is not the only stalwart to put money into the start-up car company. Toyota invested $50 million in Tesla in June shortly after Tesla's initial public offering. The two companies signed a deal under which Tesla will produce two car models for the Japanese automaker, and to that end both have invested in a new Tesla factory in the U.S.Tesla's assembly plant, which opened in Fremont, Calif., last week, will produce those cars for Toyota as well cars for the Tesla brand. The new manufacturing plant was converted from a closed New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI) factory and will produce Tesla's Model S, an all-electric sedan that is expected to have a larger reach than the company's flagship model, the Tesla Roadster luxury sports car.Tesla has also expanded into making power trains for other automakers, signing a partnership with Daimler to make the power train for 1,000 of its Electric Smart EVs.Tesla opens doors to electric auto factory (photos)

0 Vote(s)
