GE will change the gas used when pouring in foam insulation for refrigerator products, a move which will reduce greenhouse gases from production significantly.(Credit:Screen capture by Martin LaMonica/CNET)General Electric's latest green-technology initiative will be found in unlikely place: the inside of a refrigerator. The industrial giant tomorrow will announce that it has changed its refrigerator manufacturing to use a gas that dramatically reduces the amount of greenhouse gases emitted. GE will host an event at a Decatur, Ala., plant where the atmosphere-friendly gas has first been introduced into GE's refrigerators. The gas, called cyclopentane, is used as a blowing agent for the foam insulation poured into refrigeration products during manufacture. GE said it will spend about $16 million to convert its Decatur facility, part of a larger investment in the facility, to use cyclopentane instead of HFC 134a, a refrigerant which traps heat in the atmosphere. By switching over, GE will eliminate the same amount of greenhouse gases that 78,000cars emit in a year, representing a 99 percent reduction, according to GE. The calculations were made using EPA data for the global-warming potential of different gases and were done in conjunction with consulting company GreenOrder, a GE representative said. GE Appliances is making the switch to live up to the company's Ecomagination initiative to develop green-technology products and reduce the company's environmental footprint, said Paul Surowiec, the general manager for refrigeration at GE Appliances and Lighting. The company took a "clean sheet" approach to making refrigeration products to consider the performance as well as the environmental attributes from production to disposal, he said."There certainly were pockets before but we've seen a significant increase in the desire of consumers to hold us accountable for environmental stewardship," Surowiec said. "We were looking for optimization from an environment and energy perspective and this one hit home."During operation, the blowing agent will improve the effectiveness of the insulation slightly, he added. GE earlier this year said it will participate in an EPA program to dispose of refrigerators so that ozone-depleting and greenhouse gases are captured when they are recycled. The company plans to introduce cyclopentane to its other refrigeration products manufactured in the U.S. by 2014.

0 Vote(s)

The U.S. Supreme Court today pressed lawyers representing Microsoft about changing existing patent law as the software giant argued to overturn lower court rulings that it infringed on patents held by i4i, a tiny Toronto company. The case has become one of the most important in patent law in years. Microsoft is hoping to create a precedent that would make it harder for companies with patent claims to prove infringement. Several large technology companies, including Apple, Google, Facebook, and Cisco, have filed friend-of-the-court briefs supporting Microsoft's arguments. At the same time, i4i's case has drawn support from big pharmaceutical companies, venture capitalists, universities, and the U.S. government.U.S. Supreme Court(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)As the heart of the case is the degree to which companies accused of infringing have to prove that a patent is invalid. In the i4i case, the district court ruled that Microsoft had to provide "clear and convincing evidence" that i4i's patent--covering the way XML, or Extensible Markup Language, is used in Microsoft Word--is invalid. Microsoft wants the court to lower the standard, requiring defendants to offer only a "preponderance of the evidence" to invalidate a patent.A jury ruled in 2009 that Microsoft infringed on i4i's patent, awarding i4i $200 million. Microsoft lost a subsequent appeal. In November, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case.Just as Microsoft lawyer Thomas Hungar began presenting its arguments, Justices Antonin Scalia, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and Elena Kagen pressed him on the legal precedent in a 1934 case that seemed to mandate using a higher evidentiary standard. "The language of that opinion is extremely broad," Kagan said, according to a transcript. "And if you read that opinion, no one would gather from that opinion the kinds of limits that you're suggesting on it.Ginsburg, too, seemed to read the earlier ruling as requiring a higher standard of evidence than Microsoft proposes. "An infringer who assails the validity of a patent...bears a heavy burden of persuasion and fails unless his evidence has more than a dubious preponderance," Ginsburg saidHungar argued that subsequent case law "rejected the proposition that there is a heightened standard." Indeed, Hungar argued that requiring juries to consider such detail in complex patent litigation strains the bounds of logic."The fundamental problem is imposing this heightened standard on the jury that has no moorings in the statute and no moorings in common sense," Hungar argued. For its case, i4i argued that Congress has long understood the case law that requires the higher evidentiary standard and has chosen to allow case law to dictate patent protection, something i4i's lawyer Seth Waxman called "active acquiescence.""This is not a statute that Congress enacted and then forgot about," Waxman argued. Congress "has been very active in this field, it is well aware of the clear and convincing evidence standard, and it has done nothing whatsoever to change it, [or] any effort to consider making such a sweeping change in long-standing doctrine."Waxman was pressed less than Hungar, with some questions from Justices Scalia, Ginsburg, and Sonia Sotomayor focused on jury instruction in the case. The case was heard by eight justices, with Chief Justice John Roberts not taking part because he owns more than $100,000 worth of Microsoft stock. The court will likely rule on the matter by the end of June.Microsoft v. i4i US Supreme Court transcript(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script")' scribd.type = "text/javascript"' scribd.async = true' scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"' var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]' s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s)' })()'

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:TrapCall)After 201 days under review in the Apple's iTunes App approval process, the new TrapCall found an awkward news day to emerge onto the market. The TrapCall app from Teltech Systems goes hand in hand with the $5-per-month service of the same name. Users who receive calls from any blocked number can tap the sleep button on their iPhones twice to decline the call and pass it over to TrapCall. The service runs the declined number and sends the user a text message with the name, telephone number, and address of the mystery caller. With Apple's approval, TrapCall is now available foriPhone, BlackBerry, and Android. TelTech claims its service and app are unique. The most obvious question vexing the app (a good band name) is, if the owner of the blocked number chose to keep their identity a secret, is the app a violation of that privacyIt certainly doesn't help when--just as TrapCall finally got its moment in the sun yesterday--darkness fell on other popular apps like Pandora as federal prosecutors in New Jersey announced an investigation into how honest developers were in what information they were gathering about users--and what they were doing with that data.Related links&149' New service unmasks anonymous cell callers&149' Pandora gets subpoena in grand jury app probe&149' Facebook app privacy: It's complicatedTrapCall has other features, such as sending blocked callers a message that your phone number is no longer in use. That might deter more telemarketers, but do you really want to engage in that kind of misrepresentation Cell phone users have long been able to shield their originating number from display by dialing *67 before placing a call. However, cell calls placed to 800-numbers have been immune to this technique because the toll-free number is paying to receive the call. TrapCall takes advantage of that arrangement. How steep in saucy irony is this entire approval notice when one considers the timing After more than six months of dithering by Apple on whether to approve TrapCall, the very day it breaks free--surrounded by news stories about how long it took to emerge--the national media stocks up on stories about how invasive apps can be to citizen privacy. If there weren't conspiracy theorists among the TelTech Systems ranks a day or two ago, there probably are now.(Via Cult of Mac)

0 Vote(s)

The CEO of computer maker Acer has stepped down after disagreeing with the company's board of directors over the future of the company, Acer said in a statement today.Gianfranco Lanci, former CEO of Acer(Credit:Acer)Gianfranco Lanci, who had been chief executive at Acer since 2008, disagreed with the board over the company's ongoing strategy, according to the statement from the Taiwan-based company."On the company's future development, Lanci held different views from a majority of the board members and could not reach a consensus following several months' of dialogue," the statement read." [Both sides] placed different levels of importance on scale, growth, customer value creation, brand position enhancement, resource allocation and methods of implementation." JT Wang, chairman of the board of directors, will take over as CEO until a permanent replacement can be found. "The personal computer remains the core of our business," Wang said in a statement. "We have built up a strong foundation and will continue to expand within, especially in the commercial PC segment. In addition, we are stepping into the new mobile device market, where we will invest cautiously and aim to become one of the leading players."Wang's statement may offer some insight into the disagreement Lanci had with the rest of the board. Lanci has been a strong proponent of Acer delving more aggressively into the mobile market with handsets andtablets. Tablets in particular represent a product category with high-growth potential. Companies such as Samsung, Motorola, and Apple are already in the market with products of their own. Acer also introduced its first tablet PCs last month. The company is expected to launch several new models later this year.Acer recently reported that sales had fallen 10 percent in the first quarter of 2011. Analysts had expected the company's sale to drop only 3 percent, according to the BBC.

0 Vote(s)

Cybercriminals are increasingly moving from stealing just personal data to capturing trade secrets and other corporate intellectual capital that they can easily sell through the underground market, according to a new report from McAfee and the SAIC.In today's release of a new study, "Underground Economies: Intellectual Capital and Sensitive Corporate Data Now the Latest Cybercrime Currency" (PDF), McAfee and the Science Applications International Corporate find that the theft of trade secrets, marketing plans, R&amp'D data, and even source code is on the rise, especially as such information is often unprotected.Based on a global survey of IT professionals, the report uncovered a number of findings.A quarter of the companies surveyed said a data breach or just the threat of one has put a halt on plans for a merger or new product launch. Among those that actually suffered a data breach, only half of them took the necessary steps to prevent it from happening again.Among companies that have been hit by cyberattacks, only about 3 in 10 have reported all such breaches, while 6 in 10 picked and chose which ones they reported. Along those lines, many organizations specifically look to store their data in countries where the laws are more lax over reporting data breaches to customers.Hit by the recent economy downturn, many companies have been looking at cheaper ways of processing and storing their information abroad despite the potential risks, the report said. Across the world, China, Russia, and Pakistan are thought to be the least secure areas for storing critical data, while the U.S., U.K., and Germany are perceived to the safest. Currently, companies in the U.S., China, and India spend about $1 million a week to secure their sensitive data outside their own countries, the report said. The information technology industry itself continues to be challenged trying to secure the wave of iPhones, iPads, and Android devices that employees are increasingly using on the job for sharing data, the report found. "Cybercriminals have shifted their focus from physical assets to data-driven properties, such as trade secrets or product planning documents," said Simon Hunt, vice president and chief technology officer for endpoint security at McAfee. "We've seen significant attacks targeting this type of information. Sophisticated attacks such as Operation Aurora, and even unsophisticated attacks like Night Dragon, have infiltrated some of the of the largest, and seemingly most protected corporations in the world. Criminals are targeting corporate intellectual capital and they are often succeeding."To generate the report, McAfee and the SAIC worked with Vanson Bourne to survey more than 1,000 senior IT decision makers across the U.S., U.K, Japan, China, India, Brazil, and the Middle East during November and December of last year. This latest report is a follow-up to a 2008 report entitled "Unsecured Economies," which at the time found that cybercrime was costing companies more than $1 trillion globally.

0 Vote(s)

WWDC will be held between June 6 and June 10.(Credit:Apple)Apple will be holding its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at Moscone West in San Francisco between June 6 and June 10, the company announced today. As in previous years, the five-day conference will be a place for developers to learn more about Apple's operating systems, iOS andMac OS X. The company plans to hold over 100 "technical sessions" for developers, as well as provide "code-level assistance." But it's Mac OS and iOS that will take center stage, Apple said."At this year's conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said in a statement. "If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss."Schiller's comments all but confirm that Apple will also be talking quite a bit about Mac OS X Lion, the upcoming release in the company's desktop operating system. It unveiled the platform last year and promised to launch the operating system this summer. Lion will ship with Apple's Mac App Store built-in. It will also feature a new option called Mission Control, which shows users what's running on the Mac at any given time. Another new feature, LaunchPad, displays all the available apps on the system in a single pane.Apple also has said that it plans to bring some features of iOS, the operating system on theiPhone andiPad, to the Mac OS--for instance, multitouch gestures. Although Apple's announcement does not mention a keynote address, it shouldn't surprise anyone if Apple holds one. Historically, WWDC has been the event where Apple announces its next iPhone and iOS version. However, there's no telling who might be speaking. Apple CEO Steve Jobs is on a medical leave of absence and has left day-to-day operations in the hands of COO Tim Cook. That said, Jobs did speak earlier this month at an event unveiling the iPad 2. Last week, Apple announced the promotion of Craig Federighi to run the Mac OS X group, replacing Bertrand Serlet.

0 Vote(s)

Facebook has agreed to acquire Snaptu, an Israeli start-up that makes apps for feature phones, for an estimated $70 million.Facebook recently worked with the mobile development firm to build an app for lower-end cell phones that will be accessible free of data charges in a handful of overseas markets. The company says its app provides a smartphone-like experience to more than 2,500 devices. The deal was announced today by Snaptu in a company blog: Earlier this year, we announced the launch of a new Facebook mobile application to give people a great mobile experience on a broad range of feature phones. The Facebook for Feature Phones app currently works on more than 2,500 devices. We soon decided that working as part of the Facebook team offered the best opportunity to keep accelerating the pace of our product development. And joining Facebook means we can make an even bigger impact on the world.Facebook confirmed the acquisition but declined to reveal financial details. "Snaptu is a start-up run by a highly innovative collection of engineers and entrepreneurs, who we already work closely with to offer a Facebook mobile application for feature phones," Facebook said in a statement today. "As part of Facebook, Snaptu's team and technology will enable us to deliver an even better Facebook mobile experience on feature phones more quickly." The acquisition is expected to close in a few weeks and has been estimated by the Israeli media to be worth about $70 million. While smartphones command the most attention in the mobile sector, feature phones still dominate sales. Of the 417 million mobile phones sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2010, smartphones accounted for 19.3 percent of sales, or about 81 million units, according to market researcher Gartner.Snaptu was founded in 2007 with principal backing from Sequoia Capital and Carmel Ventures.Updated at 10:55 a.m.: with Facebook statement.

0 Vote(s)

Zachery Bir, on his Urbanape blog, explains how he used aniPhone 4 with the new Personal Hotspot feature in iOS 4.3 to add GPS to his Wi-Fi-onlyiPad. A tweet from Bir earlier in the day caused some skepticism when he posted:(Credit:Urbanape)From a technological standpoint, I must admit I was a bit skeptical as well. When deciding on which iPad 2 to get, I debated many of the same pros and cons as other customers wondering if the $130 upgrade to enable 3G on an iPad was worth the money.Ultimately, I decided to put the extra money toward more storage and I settled on a black, 32Gb, Wi-Fi-only iPad 2. Upon seeing a post from Daring Fireball's John Gruber about Bir's findings, I feel as though my decision may well be completely justified. Sharing your Personal Hotspot with a Wi-Fi-only iPad may enable GPS functionality.(Credit:Apple)Using an iPhone 4 and the Personal Hotspot feature, Bir reported, it seemed as though his iPad was able to maintain an uninterrupted GPS connection when traveling. Of course, this could be triangulating location awareness capabilities, but it doesn't seem likely that technology would be able to keep up with a moving vehicle uninterrupted. For the time being, connecting a Wi-Fi-only iPad (Bir's was a first-generation iPad) to an iPhone 4's Personal Hotspot seems to add a GPS or GPS-like capability. The true test, as noted in the comments on Bir's post, may be to drive where no other Wi-Fi signals are available and see if the location adjustments hold true. One commenter claims to have done so with negative results.More evidence that this could be a working solution can be found in a TabletMonsters.com post.In any case, when deciding whether or not to get an iPad with 3G, having an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3 on hand can certainly be a deciding factor in your decision, thanks to the Personal Hotspot feature. What was your deciding factor in choosing a 3G-enabled iPad or not Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

LogMeIn Ignition iPad app&39's new File Manager feature lets you access data from a remote computer.(Credit:Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET)If you have been using the LogMeIn Ignition application as a cool way to run Windows 7 on the iPad, you now can do even more with it. LogMeIn revealed today that it has just finished an update to the LogMeIn Ignition app for theiPad that adds a major new feature called File Manager. Basically, now, in addition to allowing you to control a remote computer over the Internet using an iPad, the app also enables you to view and transfer files back and forth between the iPad and the remote computer.I tried out the new version of the app and it worked very well. Once logged in, you have the options of controlling the remote computer or accessing its data. When the latter is picked, you're able to view the entire contents of the computer's entire hard drive or drives, including even hidden files and folders. Files and folders are organized somewhat like photo albums, and supported files (namely those for which the reader apps are installed on the iPad, such as photo, text, or PDFs) can be opened directly from the remote computer. You can also copy and move files between the iPad and the remote computer.(Credit:Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET)You can also copy files and even folders from the remote computer onto the iPad. To do this, you can just Tab to the file or folder to select it, then tap on the copy (or move) button. Multiple files or folders can be copied, moved, or deleted at a time. When a single file or folder is selected, you also have the option to rename it. Once a file or folder has been copied to the iPad, you can then copy or move it to another remote computer. Folders can also be updated with the original versions on the remote computer.Unfortunately, you can't transfer files originally stored on the iPad, such as photos in its photo library, to the remote computer' nor can you put photos or videos from the remote computer into the iPad's libraries. This means each time you want to view files that you have copied from a remote computer, you'll need to run the LogMeIn Ignition app.To make up for this, the app enables you to work with multiple computers at a time, including transfering files and folders directly among them, and you can switch between different computers via different windows, similar to switching between Web sites when usingSafari. So far this could be the biggest improvement of the app: now you can not only control the remote computer but also use it as something of a "cloud" data server for the iPad. Apart from the File Manager, the update also brings back the "Wake on LAN" function that was taken away with the previous update. With Wake on LAN you can turn the remote computer on via the Internet, eliminating the need to keep it running all the time.According to LogMeIn, the update is now going through Apple's approval process and will soon be available to existing customers via Apple's App Store as a free update. The LogMeIn service can be used for free (there are also subscriptions with more features) via a Web browser. The LogMeIn Ignition app, which allows access from the iPad, on the other hand costs $30. The app and the update also work with theiPhone and iPod Touch, via both cellular and Wi-Fi connections. With this update, the LogMeIn Ignition app is now worth its rather hefty price tag.

0 Vote(s)

Using Wi-Fi over a wired connection at home could bring your speeds down about 30 percent, suggests a new study out today by broadband research firm Epitiro.Tracking the broadband connections of sample users in the U.S., U.K., Italy, and Spain, Epitiro found that on average people lost around 30 percent of their download speed using Wi-Fi over wired. Further, Wi-Fi users ran into a 10 to 20 percent increase in latencies, or delays, when downloading content. Why such a disparity in performance Many Wi-Fi routers use the same default communications channel, which can create interference with neighboring networks. To solve that issue, Epitiro advises Wi-Fi users to try a different channel to see if performance improves, a process explained in Step 6 of this Microsoft document on improving your wireless network. But Epitiro also points out that Wi-Fi performance can be degraded by physical items, such as walls and furniture, and bump into interference from other wireless devices using the same frequency, such as cordless phones, TV remotes, and even baby monitors. The Microsoft document also offers suggestions on resolving interference problems as well as other issues. The good news is that actual Web page download times between Wi-Fi and wired connections were just about the same, according to Epitiro's findings, indicating that they're less affected by changes in line speed. One handy Web site that can show you your broadband speeds is Speedtest.net. Running the site's performance tests will measure your download and upload speeds and tell you how they compare with those of other users. To compile its data, Epitiro checked and compared the performance of 14,001 users across the four countries, with 56 percent hopping onto the Internet via Wi-Fi and 44 percent through wired Ethernet connections. The study was conducted from November 2010 to February 2011.

0 Vote(s)

Michelangelo's "David" has seen better days. He's spent centuries on his feet. He's tired, yet he cannot take a seat. Now some are wondering whether engineering work that's taking place beneath him might cause the Renaissance icon to quite simply collapse with exhaustion. The Telegraph reports that construction of a high-speed railway being built beneath Florence might cause one vibration too many for David. The paper quotes Fernando de Simone, a specialist in subterranean engineering, as saying: "The tunnel will pass about 600 meters (2,000 feet) from the statue of David, the ankles of which, it is well known, are riddled with microfissures. If it's not moved before digging begins, there is a serious risk that it will collapse."Is he cracking up(Credit:CC Jay8085/Flickr)"David" is, apparently, not made of stern stuff. The marble used by Michelangelo was not of the finest quality. Moreover, the 17-foot-high "David" has been at something of an angle for quite a while, putting additional pressure on his left side.An Italian art critic, Vittorio Sgarbi, reportedly believes that the rail project should simply be diverted elsewhere, which shows an interesting and cultured sense of priorities. However, for now authorities seem to be content merely to monitor the effects of the engineering work. Florence has had its fair share of smaller earthquakes, and thus far "David" seems to have withstood everything. But perhaps it might be better to find him a more peaceful home in his old age.Perhaps the Italians could move him somewhere to the south of Italy, where the tourist economy certainly needs boosting, as does its image--given that many see it as a place in which nefarious activities abound. One can only hope that a sensible solution is reached before, one difficult night, someone has to pick up the pieces.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)Starting March 11, when iOS 4.3 launches, users will be able to stream content from third-party apps on theiPhone,iPad, oriPod Touch to an Apple TV. But so far, the scope of support for the functionality is very much up in the air. Music-video site Vevo is one of the few companies to acknowledge that it's ready to take advantage of the new AirPlay functionality. The company added support for the feature on Wednesday to its iPad and iPhone apps. But unlike Vevo, Netflix doesn't see the benefit of adding support for Apple's new feature, and won't offer it in its iPhone or iPad apps, GigaOm reported yesterday. Netflix Vice President of Corporate Communications Steve Swasey pointed out to GigaOm that "Netflix is already available on Apple TV." Rightfully so, Netflix believes that adding AirPlay support to its mobile apps is rather useless, since Apple TV owners can access its content from the set-top box without the need for other devices. However, Apple's upcoming AirPlay functionality could be a boon for other app developers that want to bring their content to the Apple TV. The only question now is whether those developers will follow Vevo's lead and see value in it. At this point, it seems many companies are still trying to decide if the functionality is right for them. One of those companies, according to GigaOm, is HBO. Citing an unnamed source, the publication said HBO is considering the possibility of using the new functionality, though the source didn't provide any details. HBO support for AirPlay would be quite a surprise. The cable network is notoriously protective of its content and so far has been reluctant to see it made available anywhere else, especially on Netflix's streaming service. Over the past several months, HBO has commented several times on its issues with Netflix, saying the streaming company charges customers too little. Back in January, Jeff Cusson, HBO's senior vice president of corporate affairs, went so far as to say that the company "has no intention of making its content available for streaming" on Netflix. However, if HBO opts to stream content to the Apple TV through AirPlay, it could circumvent Netflix, effectively bringing its content to the television without having to ink a deal with the company it has taken such issue with. But HBO is just one of many companies' in the coming weeks look for more to announce their plans to either support or ignore AirPlay.
Would a cross-platform version of BlackBerry Messenger benefit RIM(Credit:BlackBerry.com)Research In Motion is said to be prepping cross-platform versions of its popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) application for release later this year. According to multiple sources close to Boy Genius Report (BGR), an Android version "is definitely a go" with an iOS counterpart also on the horizon. Android Atlas reached out to RIM to confirm the report, but spokeswoman Marisa Conway responded that "RIM's standard policy is to decline comment on rumors and speculation."One theory is that a stripped-down, lighter version of BBM will allow Android users to communicate across platforms with other clients, with RIM reserving additional features for the BlackBerry. Android and iOS users would presumably be able only to chat, while BlackBerry owners will still be able to share location and pictures with one another. It's unknown at this point whether or not the Android app would carry a cost, but BGR believes that the client would be free. One idea could be to offer the free version to all with a paid, full-featured client available that would add to RIM's bottom line. This could pan out to be a good move for RIM, providing a platform-agnostic service for mobile users. And instead of having zero presence on Android and iOS, it could come in and dominate a market it helped to establish. The BlackBerry Messenger has been around for a longer time and carries more weight than competitors such as Kik and WhatsApp. With both of these apps already amassing more than 1 million Android downloads each, RIM could potentially be looking at millions of its own.
When it comes to grading companies on their sustainability, some leading organizations fall short as far as transparency and methodology. That's according to a white paper released this week by SustainAbility.com, an organization that is both a think tank and a consulting firm for corporations looking to improve green standings and sustainability practices. (Credit:SustainAbility.com)SustainAbility.com issued a video Tuesday along with its report discussing how 21 of the leading eco-ratings organizations it investigated based on 13 criteria (see chart) appeared to be insufficiently evaluating the companies they target. Its partners include the United Nations Environment Programme and the Global Reporting Initiative , while its clients include Starbucks, Coca-Cola, and Shell. This latest paper was phase three of its "Rate the Raters" series, an investigation into corporate sustainability ratings geared at developing best practices. The series was sponsored in part by Ford Motor, Sara Lee, Autodesk, and ExxonMobil, among others. The Access to Medicine Index, CDP, Climate Counts, and FTSE4Good received kudos from the organization for their "strong public disclosure." But Sustainability said in its report that many of the ratings organizations investigated don't make their evaluation process for companies transparent, and because of this the public is less likely to trust their opinion. But it also made clear that one of the reasons why these ratings agencies fail to be transparent may be their own lack of confidence in what it says are often complicated points systems with a lack of sufficient quality control.(Credit:SustainAbility.com)The organization also advised that ratings evaluation focus less on a company's past history, and more on evaluating its current stance as a company. It also advocated company outreach in which ratings organizations give companies with poor ratings specific targeted goals on how they can improve the way their company operates.Keep in mind that the companies evaluated in phase three willingly participated in Sustainability.com's questionnaire and investigation of their ratings system.
Rapid recent solar and wind price falls are likely to bring new markets and mass adoption a step closer over the next decade and raise the prospects of mergers. The financial crisis coupled with a ramp-up in China, which now leads the world wind and solar manufacturing, have led to over-capacity and pressured prices in the past three years.Natural gas is the main fossil fuel rival and still wins on price after U.S. shale gas finds created a global glut. But wind and solar are now competitive in niche markets after prices of turbines fell by a fifth and solar panels by a half since 2007. New markets are emerging as they fall further."We see it as an extremely potent and powerful trend for the coming decade," said Rupesh Madlani, renewables and clean technology analyst at Barclays Capital, adding that the rate of adoption may take people by surprise. For renewable energy, 2010 was a year of contrasts. The global wind market shrank for the first time in two decades, with fewer turbines installed than in 2009, but the world added a record amount of solar power, reaping the benefit of generous incentives in Europe. The price of solar panels, or modules, is expected to fall another 10 percent to 25 percent in 2011.Modules prices would halve again in the next two to three years, predicted Madlani. But other analysts said that the longer outlook is clouded by conflicting pressures.Additional demand from new markets such as India, China, and the Middle East may counter an expected paring of subsidies in key markets such as Italy and Germany, they said.WindWind turbine prices are not expected to rise this year or next, given a continuing glut and aggressive pricing by smaller suppliers, even while rising steel prices add inflationary pressures.Price falls have coupled with technology development to increase competitiveness.A wind turbine can now generate electricity at a cost of about 6 to 8 U.S. cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), depending on construction and financing costs, compared with about 3 to 7 cents for gas and coal, say analysts.Denmark-based MAKE Consulting reported strong growth in turbine orders in 2010 for delivery over the next couple of years, up 48 percent on 2009."Prices have bottomed," at about 1 million euros per megawatt, said MAKE Consulting's Steen Broust Nielsen. In the windiest sites, in Scotland, Ireland, and Brazil, wind is already competitive with coal, said Jefferies bank analyst Gerard Reid."That's a very significant moment," he said. "But in the majority of countries, like Germany, you're nowhere near that."Wind turbines are quicker to install than large gas-fired, coal-fired, or nuclear power plants, which is a big plus in emerging markets, where growing, more affluent populations are demanding more electricity, said Barcap's Madlani. For the first time, China last year topped the world in cumulative installed capacity. An advantage of solar power is that it supplies electricity at the hottest time of the day, in line with peak demand for air conditioning and when electricity prices are highest.Even so, solar panels generate power at a cost of more than 15 U.S. cents per kWh even in the sunniest climates, making it competitive only in a very few retail power markets such as southern Italy and Hawaii. Elsewhere it depends on subsidies.Italy is expected to rein in its support for solar energy from 2012, with implications for global demand. "The pace of (global) price declines could accelerate," said Shyam Mehta, at GTM Research.Merger Those solar companies that weather the price storm could be set up for a mass market with strong returns, driving expectations of acquisitions by leading electronics and semiconductor companies."The number one company in the world holding solar patents is Samsung, but they're not sure how to jump into it," said Jefferies' Reid. "Semiconductor companies like Intel are also looking closely."In the wind market, a merger among existing niche players could create a global player to rival Vestas, GE, and Siemens.Buyers could include emerging eastern giants, or outsiders. China's Goldwind acquired Germany's Vensys in 2008, while diversified U.S. manufacturer United Technologies bought Clipper Windpower last year.Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited.
Hands on with Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (photos) BARCELONA, Spain--After months of rumors, a slew of leaks and one creepy commercial, Sony Ericsson's worst-kept secret is now a reality. On Sunday, the day before Mobile World Congress officially opens, Sony Ericsson finally took the wraps off of the Xperia Play.Long billed as the "PlayStation Phone," the Xperia Play is very much the handset that Sony Ericsson highlighted last week during the Super Bowl. In the United States, it will arrive as a Verizon Wireless exclusive later this spring. The four-inch (854x480 pixel resolution' 16.7 million colors) display is up to usual Sony Ericsson standards. Colors were bright and vibrant and graphics showed up well. From our brief hands-on experience, the display also appears to do the gaming features justice. Below the display are four physical controls for the usual Android functions (back, menu, home, and search). On the left spine you'll find a 3.5mm headset jack and a Micro-USB port, while the power control, a volume rocker, and shoulder gaming controls sit on the right spine.Sony Ericsson Xperia Play(Credit:Sony Ericsson)Of course, what the phone can do is the real story. At the top level, the Xperia Play runs on Gingerbread (Android 2.3), so you'll get the new text selection tool, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and new options in the Settings menu. And like on the Xperia Arc, you can pinch your fingers to see all five home screens on one page. As we said when the earlier handset made its debut atCES, it's very much like HTC's Leap feature.Slide up the face to reveal the gaming controls, which are very similar to those on aSony PlayStation DualShock controller. Instead of joysticks, however, you'll find two round touch pads. And as mentioned, the handset has only one set of shoulder buttons. Game downloads will be available from an online Sony Ericsson store. Once you purchase a game, individual icons for each title will sit in the phone's main menu. The Xperia Play also has a 5.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, a flash, image stabilization, geotagging, and video recording. Other features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a personal organizer, a speakerphone, Assisted-GPS, messaging and e-mail, 400MB of internal memory, Sony Ericsson's Timescape interface, a music player, and a full HTML browser with Flash Lite. It also supports the usual Google apps and you can download additional titles from the Android Market. We'll follow up shortly with a deeper dive. For now, check out our hands-on photos.

0 Vote(s)

Pacemaker patients who opt for magnetic resonance imaging risk serious complications, including damage to the pacemaker's parts or a change in the device's ability to consistently trigger a heartbeat (called pacing capture threshold). That is, until now.(Credit:Medtronic)The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has just approved Medtronic's Revo MRI SureScan pacemaker for use in the U.S.' in doing so, the SureScan has become the first and only pacemaker in the country approved as MR-Conditional.Minneapolis-based Medtronic says it will begin shipping the pacing system--which costs between $5,000 and $10,000--immediately."[This] is a major technological breakthrough for patients who need access to MRI," says Rod Gimbel of Cardiology Associates of East Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., in a news release. "Providing pacemaker patients with access to MRI allows detection and treatment of serious medical conditions such as stroke, cancer, and a wide variety of important neurologic and orthopedic conditions."Because MRI scanners can cause pacemakers to misinterpret MRI-generated electrical noise and withhold (or delivery unnecessary) pacing therapy, the Revo includes "SureScan" technology that sets the device into MRI mode, with hardware modifications to both the device and the leads that reduce hazards produced by MRIs.Since Medtronic's pacemakers are designed "to treat bradycardia (a slow, irregular, or interrupted heartbeat)," pacemaker patients tend to be a population that could benefit from MRI scans. Medtronic estimates that some 200,000 pacemaker patients in the U.S. who could use MRI scans for a variety of diagnoses forgo them due to the risks of pacemaker interference and complications. In 2009, the FDA alerted pacemaker patients to the Class I recall of certain Medtronic Kappa and Sigma pacemakers, which were found to at times fail due to a separation of wires connecting the electronic circuit to certain parts, including the battery. These pacemakers are no longer for sale.

0 Vote(s)

Teardowns of Apple'sVerizoniPhone 4 reveal a Qualcomm "world mode" chip and redesigned antenna, among other modifications to the heretofore AT&T-only phone. Both iFixit and UBM TechInsights have taken apart the phone exposing more than a few non-trivial changes. Foremost of these changes is the Qualcomm MDM6600 chip--a first for an Apple phone. That is the same chip that's being used in the Droid Pro world phone, which enables the Droid to support both CDMA and GSM. But, for now, that capability in the iPhone remains a latent, untapped potential.Other Verizon iPhone 4 iFixit teardown highlights: Battery: the battery can be removed "fairly easily once you circumvent Apple's pesky Pentalobe screws," iFixit said. Antenna: an additional notch in the antenna enclosure on the right side of the phone is a result of the switch from GSM to CDMA. "Only time will tell if this new antenna design helps combat the reception problems plaguing the GSM iPhone 4," iFixit said. Display: the display assembly is different from the GSM iPhone 4. The mounting tabs are in different locations for the two display assemblies. Upshot: the two assemblies are not interchangeable.Rubber pads: Apple used custom-molded rubber pads between the chips and the EMI shields. "Presumably to conduct heat and quell any interference between analog and digital circuitry."Chips: Other high-profile silicon, in addition to the Qualcomm MDM6600, include Apple's A4 chip (of course) and Texas Instruments touchscreen controller (343S0499).Verizon iPhone 4: in the upper circuit board, the chip with the red outline is the Qualcomm MDM6600, the orange outlined chip is the Toshiba 16GB NAND Flash.(Credit:iFixit)The Verizon iPhone 4 earned a Repairability Score of 6 out of 10, iFixit said. Aside from the battery's annoying Pentalobe screws, "other components are connected mostly with regular screws, with limited use of tabs and adhesives." iFixit also notes that the SIM card and SIM tray were the only user-serviceable parts in the AT&T iPhone 4. "Sadly, now the Verizon iPhone does not contain any user-serviceable parts."

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Volkswagen)What with gasoline prices at the pump well past $3 a gallon--and edging ever higher--drivers understandably are pining for the day when technology will come to their rescue. If you're willing to wait a couple of years, Volkswagen may have what you're waiting for. At an auto show in Qatar this week, Volkswagen showed off a proof-of-conceptcar that will get 261 miles to the gallon. The XL1, a two cylinder, two-seater made from carbon fiber, is expected to go into production sometime in the next two years. If the auto's fuel efficiency lives up to the advance billing, VW likely will be able to say it makes the world's most economical car. This is a retooled design of a concept vehicle that the company initially showed at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show. At the time, VW said the car would get almost 170 miles per gallon. The idea got an early thumbs-up from Consumer Reports, which wrote that the the XL1 "demonstrates how far relatively conventional technology [takes] fuel economy. It will be interesting to see if Volkswagen is able to bring this car to market overseas and how successfully they can bring down the cost of producing the carbon-fiber body." Volkswagen is not the only automaker planning to make carbon fiber autos' so are BMW and Mercedes. You can find the full spec list for the XL1 here.(Credit:Volkswagen)This story originally appeared on CBSNews.com.

0 Vote(s)

Because the extension is installed by default when Skype's main software is installed, a "large number of Firefox users who have installed Skype have also installed the Skype Toolbar, knowingly or unknowingly," Mozilla said.Mozilla is in contact with Skype programmers and will restore the extension's privileges if the problems are addressed, the organization said.In a statement, Skype said it's resolving the problem."Based on our initial investigation, we know that downloading the new client will fix for most users any compatibility issues, and are working with Mozilla to ensure that there are no other compatibility issues. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused our users," the company said. The Skype toolbar extension, bundled with the Skype software for making audio and video calls over the Internet, highlights phone numbers in Web pages to make it easier to call them with Skype. Those who really like it can still run the toolbar, Mozilla said: "The blocklist entry will be a 'soft block,' where the extension is disabled and the user is notified of the block and given the option to re-enable it if they choose. It's also important to note that the Skype application itself will continue to work as it always has' only the Skype Toolbar within Firefox is being disabled."The extension has been the No. 1 or No. 2 cause of crashes for the current stable version of Firefox, according to comments in Mozilla's bug tracker. And the plug-in dramatically slows Firefox's processing of Web page elements through what's called the Document Object Model (DOM)--by a factor of 3 to 8 with a newer 5.x version and by a factor of 325 with the older 4.x version, Mozilla programmer Boris Zbarsky said. The effect of this is to make pages appear to load much more slowly.Earlier in January, a Skype representative acknowledged that the company knows about the issue. "Look out for an update in the near future," the representative said.Updated 6:57 a.m. PTwith Skype comment.

0 Vote(s)

Modern CEOs live on airplanes. But in stepping down from the CEO role to become executive chairman, Eric Schmidt's travel schedule is about to go into overdrive.Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt will do a lot of talking in his new role.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Google's bombshell announcement this afternoon that Schmidt, the company's second CEO but the first to provide "adult supervision" to Larry Page and Sergey Brin's world-changing creation, thrusts Schmidt into a role where he won't see the Googleplex very often. In ceding control of day-to-day operations to Page, Schmidt told financial analysts that he's preparing to focus on "the things I'm most interested in." In other words, meet Google's new schmoozer in chief. Schmidt will focus exclusively on spreading Google's message around the world, talking to customers, partners, governments, and businesses thinking about spending money on Google's products. To a certain extent, that's what he's been doing already, but being able to focus his considerable energies on external threats and opportunities might allow Google's ruling triumvirate to adapt to a world that has found them nearly atop the tech world. "For the last 10 years, we have all been equally involved in making decisions. This triumvirate approach has real benefits in terms of shared wisdom, and we will continue to discuss the big decisions among the three of us. But we have also agreed to clarify our individual roles so there's clear responsibility and accountability at the top of the company," Schmidt wrote in a blog post announcing the management moves. While Google continues to operate perhaps the finest cash machine ever created on the Internet, one of its main problems over the last few years is that it has been late to realize that the world no longer sees it as a scrappy multicolored Silicon Valley start-up focused on Web search. This is perhaps most evident in Washington, where Google has come under heavy scrutiny in recent years and has faced trouble completing key projects, such as its Google Books settlement with authors and publishers and its proposed acquisition of ITA Software, both of which currently lie in limbo. "An awful lot of the problems we've been having (in Washington) is that people don't understand what we really do," Schmidt said, admitting that Google let competitors and critics define the company in the absence of strong messages from Google. That's about to change, and Schmidt has an excellent place to start as a member of the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology and a prominent supporter of Democratic politicians for years.Google has also faced resistance from industries towards which it has directed its considerable intelligence, computing horsepower, and resources. One area where Google can use an image makeover is in Hollywood. Google is trying to acquire film and television content for Google TV and YouTube's streaming service. So far, it's been slow going: the major broadcast networks have all blocked their content from appearing on Google TV, and YouTube has yet to get much material from the big Hollywood studios. In music, Google spent much of 2010 laboring on a cloud music service, multiple sources have told CNET. Google must now secure licensing rights from the top four major music labels and numerous publishers. That can be a painful process, but one thing that the film studios and music labels understand and respect is star power and Schmidt is a marquee name in business. It's also not hard to imagine Schmidt going on tour with Dave Girouard, president of Google Enterprise, wooing some of the Fortune 500's biggest companies to move their enterprise IT software over to Google Apps. Schmidt has a pedigree in the enterprise technology world, serving as CTO at Sun Microsystems and CEO of Novell before taking the Google job, and can discuss the needs and wants of enterprise IT managers with the best of them. And he can also push: Schmidt's efforts to sell Java to the world were considered essential to the spread of that technology. One thing that will be interesting, however, is whether or not Schmidt can avoid a tendency to stick his foot in his mouth when it comes to discussing hot-button topics related to Google. He's been slammed many times in the past for suggesting people should watch what they do on the Internet, change their name to escape past deeds, and turn control of their lives over to computers. In many of those cases, Schmidt appeared to be joking, but in many he didn't. Any true schmoozer can't leave a listener confused as to how to interpret his words. As of April 4, however, Schmidt will be Google's public representative without having to worry about the nuts and bolts of Google's payroll or whether or not to approve a new social-networking project that involves implanting chips in the brains of volunteers. This is not a role that either co-founder, as brilliant as they are, is capable of taking on: Brin often appears on Google's behalf at product-oriented events, but a Page sighting is rare, and neither has much experience discussing Google's broader issues in public. Thursday's announcement felt almost like a high-school graduation, with proud parent Schmidt sending Page out into the world on his own for the first time, confident in his ability to make his way. It would be premature to judge Page's chances hours after the announcement' while it's true he's done this before, Google was a very different place in 2001 than it is in 2011. Has Schmidt done enough to prepare the brilliant but almost painfully shy Page for his spot leading one of the world's most important technology companies One thing will surely help: Schmidt will be able to take much of the public pressure off Page as he circles the globe spreading the gospel of Google.CNET's Greg Sandoval contributed to this report.See also:&149' Paging Larry: Google's new CEO has lots to do&149' CEO shake-up at Google: Page replaces Schmidt&149' Eric Schmidt's letter on stepping down as CEO

0 Vote(s)

You may have heard of Fold-It, which involves different approaches to folding proteins, and EteRNA, which lets players propose new molecular structures for ribonucleic acids (RNA). While these are conceptual exercises that can influence future research, a new set of games out of Stanford takes these types of games one step further.Stanford researcher Ingmar Riedel-Kruse and his lab group have developed such games as Biotic Pinball, POND PONG, and a soccer game called Ciliaball that involve players actually interacting with living microorganisms."We hope that by playing games involving biology of a scale too small to see with the naked eye, people will realize how amazing these processes are and they'll get curious and want to know more," says Riedel-Kruse, an assistant professor of bioengineering. "The applications we can envision so far are on the one hand educational, for people to learn about biology, but we are also thinking perhaps we could have people running real experiments as they play these games."To determine whether they could design biotic games at all, the researchers stuck to more primitive, basic game concepts. They came up with eight games that fit into three categories: interaction with molecules, single cells, or colonies of single cells. The hardware is pretty straightforward. A small camera transmits live images of the paramecia as they swim about, responding to changes in the polarity of an electrical field applied to the fluid chamber by the player's laptop, with the "game board" superimposed on the image of the paramecia. A microprocessor tracks movement and keeps score. In some games, such as PAC-mecium, the player controls the polarity of a mild electrical field applied across the fluid chamber, which influences the direction the paramecia move. In Biotic Pinball, the player injects occasional whiffs of a chemical into the fluid, causing the paramecia to swim in certain directions. The molecular level game, called PolymerRace, involves the laboratory technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR), an automated process by which researchers make millions of copies of an organism's DNA in as few as two hours. The player is linked to the output of a PCR machine that is running different reactions simultaneously, and can bet on which reactions will be run fastest. The third type of game involves colonies of yeast cells. Players literally smell the colonies to try to distinguish between them based on bread-vinegar-like scents.Riedel-Kruse acknowledges that for some players there have been ethical issues, but stresses that these organisms lack brains and the capacity to feel pain: "We are talking about microbiology with these games, very primitive life forms...These games could be a good tool to stimulate discussions in schools on bioethical issues."The games are presented in a paper published this month in the 10th anniversary issue of Lab on a Chip.

0 Vote(s)

Brain battle: Two competitors try to push a ball around with their mental powers on Mindflex Duel. (Credit:Tim Hornyak/CNET)"Control, control. You must learn control."Yoda was right. But if you want to hone your Jedi chops without lifting X-wings out of a swamp, try duking it out with Mattel's head-to-head telekinesis game. The toy giant is updating its 2009 Mindflex novelty with Mindflex Duel, a competition in which concentration wins the day. Mindflex Duel comes with headsets, hoops, and balls. Lightsabers not included.(Credit:Mattel)Players don headsets equipped with EEG-like forehead sensors that measure brainwaves, and face off above a ball hovering on a stream of air. The harder they concentrate, the more each player can push the ball across the board to the opponent's end, winning the round. The original Mindflex is a solo game that comes with five obstacle courses to push the ball through. The sensors on the headset control fans in the unit that levitate the ball higher or lower. While you're still not directly controlling the ball in Mindflex Duel (you're controlling the fan power), the competitive aspect makes it more thrilling. I tried it out atCES 2011, going up against a guy who initially had problems getting the sensors to read his brainwaves, which made us wait while it tried to get a signal. Meanwhile, his head looked, well, relatively small. I had this one in the bag. "Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size do you" I should have listed to Yoda. The guy kicked my brain's butt. It was really tough to get a sense of the connection between concentrating and moving the ball to his side of the board. I thought the whole thing might be a crock (apparently, Germany's Der Spiegel was also dubious), but Mattel says it's real EEG science. I kept tensing my jaw muscles to move that ball, but to no avail. My opponent easily pushed it over to my side. His was the superior brain. OK, so my only hope of summoning a lightsaber while glued to a Wampa's cave is to buy the $99.99 Mindflex Duel when it comes out in August. It's now on preorder on Amazon. It comes with two headsets and a bunch of hoops and hurdles so you can design your own obstacles and play against or with opponents. Challenges include games like Basketblaster, in which players shoot as many baskets as they can in a given time. Will future versions include Fooling Stormtroopers and Choking Imperial Naysayers challenges One can only hope.

0 Vote(s)

Lookout Mobile Security, which just raised fresh capital to boost its fight against mobile malware, said it has identified the peskiest cell phone threat to date. The Android Trojan, dubbed Geinimi, has cropped up in China and is capable of taking a significant amount of personal data and sending it to remote servers. Lookout said Geinimi displays botnet-like qualities and is the most sophisticated wireless malware it has seen. Thus far, infected programs have only been seen on various Chinese app stores. "Geinimi is effectively being 'grafted' onto repackaged versions of legitimate applications, primarily games, and distributed in third-party Chinese Android app markets," Lookout said in a blog post on Wednesday. "The affected applications request extensive permissions over and above the set that is requested by their legitimate original versions." The security firm said it has already updated both the paid and free versions of its software to protect against Geinimi.Story Copyright (c) 2010 AllThingsD.
Tech, media, and telecom companies in emerging markets and those considered "digital innovators" are among the world's tops in providing value to their investors, according to a new study from the Boston Consulting Group.Out today, the report "Swimming Against the Tide: How Technology, Media, and Telecommunications Companies Can Prosper in the New Economic Reality" found that seven of the top 10 telecom performers, five of the top 10 media performers, and four of the top 10 technology performers are in India, Taiwan, Mexico, China, and other emerging markets. But global companies tuned into the digital revolution, such as Apple and Google, are also tops in rewarding their investors.Covering the period from 2005 through 2009, the report examined the total shareholder return (TSR) of 126 different companies throughout the world. Of these, 81 percent were found in emerging economies, adding up to 64 percent of the overall total, according to Boston Consulting. The top media performers included Tencent Holdings, Naspers, and Net Servicos de Comunicacao. Tops in telecom were America Movil, China Mobile, and Bharti Airtel. And the best performers in the technology sector were Apple, MediaTek, and Infosys Technologies.(Credit:Boston Consulting Group)"Emerging-market companies are spreading their wings to play larger roles on a global stage," David Dean, a senior partner at Boston Consulting and co-author of the study, said in a statement. "Many of these countries have moved beyond being primarily a source of cheap labor to become important centers of technical innovation."Overall, the tech, media, and telecom sectors posted mediocre performance, according to the consultancy. Where the sample of 712 companies in all industries yielded a 6.6 percent average annual TSR, the technology sector came closest (6.2 percent), followed by telecom (5.3 percent), and media companies (2.5 percent). The Boston Consulting Group based total shareholder return on six different factors: revenue growth, changes in profit margins, the valuation multiple (the value of the business), cash dividends, share repurchases, and debt repayments. Among these, revenue growth typically added up to 70 percent or 80 percent of the overall shareholder value among most companies, according to the report.

0 Vote(s)

WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange was granted bail today by a London judge, but prosecutors said they will appeal the decision. In a media-mobbed hearing today, a U.K. judge decided to release Assange on bail of 200,000 pounds, or about $317,000, on the condition that he surrender his passport, wear an electronic tracker, provide a U.K. address, and report to police daily.U.K. prosecutors, acting on behalf of the Swedish government, told the court that they will file a formal appeal within 48 hours. This follows some confusion about whether an appeal will take place, with an ABC News correspondent posting a note on Twitter saying no appeal would happen.Even if the appeal fails, it may take a few days for the money to be raised. Mark Stephens, an attorney at the London-based FSI law firm who is representing Assange, said, according to the U.K. Guardian: "The problem is that 200,000 [pounds] can't be paid in by check because checks take seven days to clear. We have to go around to find money in cash. Until this court is in possession of 200,000 [pounds], an innocent man stays in jail."Today's developments are the newest twists in a high-profile story that combines the Swedish case with Assange's central role in releasing information about U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and thousands of often-secret diplomatic cables.Assange was arrested last week in London by police acting on behalf of Swedish authorities that accused him of one count of unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation, and one count of rape, all alleged to have been committed in August 2010, according to British police. Sweden is seeking his extradition' Assange has denied the charges. The situation has produced a polarized reaction. WikiLeaks critics say the organization's actions harm U.S. security and undermine a legitimate need for diplomats to communicate confidentially. Supporters say WikiLeaks has helped shine necessary light on many countries' true motivations and behavior.A CNET legal analysis shows that Assange could be vulnerable to prosecution under the U.S. Espionage Act, which has previously been applied extraterritorially to a German citizen, even though he holds an Australian passport. An attorney for Assange said a grand jury is being formed in in Alexandria, Va., a possible mechanism for bringing such charges. Also today:&149' Activist filmmaker Michael Moore said he will contribute $20,000 toward Assange's bail. "I am publicly offering the assistance of my Web site, my servers, my domain names, and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving, as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars," Moore said.&149' The Sunlight Foundation's Ellen Miller and Mike Klein, the group's co-founders, denounced calls for the "persecution of Julian Assange" but stopped short of an outright endorsement of WikiLeaks' approach. "Some secrets about ongoing military operations and security activities should not be revealed to the public," they wrote. "Some debates over public policy can and should be done behind closed doors to allow for confidential negotiations, as long as there is public review."&149' Assange has been barred from receiving correspondence while in jail, according to a BBC report.&149' Rep.-elect Allen West (R-Fla.) has said, according to a radio interview posted on YouTube by ThinkProgress, that U.S. media outlets (and presumably blogs) writing about WikiLeaks should be muzzled: "Here is an individual that is not an American citizen, first and foremost, for whatever reason, you know, gotten his hands on classified American material and put it out there in the public domain. And I think that we also should be censoring the American news agencies which enabled him to be able to do this and then also supporting him and applauding him for the efforts. So that's kind of aiding and abetting of a serious crime. Because of the fact that he's a foreign citizen, this is espionage."&149' Columbia University's journalism school faculty is telling President Obama that prosecuting anyone involved in WikiLeaks "will set a dangerous precedent for reporters in any publication or medium, potentially chilling investigative journalism and other First Amendment-protected activity."&149' The invaluable Steven Aftergood notes that nobody seems to have any idea how many government employees and contractors hold security clearances. His ballpark estimate is 2.5 million. And this evening:&149' The Washington Post is running a simple but provocative cartoon titled "Prosecuting WikiLeaks."&149' Twitter-ing is allowed in the London court, according to chief magistrate Howard Riddle. Not all judges are that enlightened.&149' The Air Force is blocking personnel from visiting the Web sites of the New York Times and other publications that have reproduced some of the classified WikiLeaks cables, the Wall Street Journal reports. (CNET was the first to report last week that some federal government installations were blocking access to WikiLeaks and its mirrors.)&149' FoxNews.com is running an odd opinion article by psychiatrist Keith Ablow titled "Inside the Mind of Julian Assange." Representative excerpt: "Lots of secrets may have marred Julian Assange's development."&149' Arbor Networks has an intelligent description of the attempted denial of service attacks swirling around l'affaire Wikileaks. "Most of the attacks over the last week were both relatively small and unsophisticated," it says. "In short, other than than intense media scrutiny, the attacks were unremarkable."Last updated at 11 p.m. PT with information about the status of the appeal and additional news.

0 Vote(s)

Now every girl (or guy) who bought the Artoo version will have to get a friend to buy this one.
The Ion Twin Video mini camcorder can be had for $99.99 in online stores.(Credit:Ion)We saw an early mock-up of Ion's dual-lens Twin Video mini camcorder at last year's CES. Now, almost a year later, the product is finally shipping, and it doesn't really look like the mock-up. However, it still has two lenses that allow you to shoot rear and front video feeds with the touch of a button. What's the purpose of that Well, the idea is that the person shooting the video can easily--and smoothly--get in on the action. Ion's billing the Twin Video as perfect for "blogging, interviewing, and creating videos with an easy-to-use, live-editing feature."Alas, the resolution is only 640x480 and not "HD" and it comes with no memory (you must supply an SD/SDHC card). But the unit is pretty affordable. It lists for $119.99 but we've seen it for $100 online. Hopefully, we'll get our hands on a review sample in the next few weeks.

0 Vote(s)

This year's Cleantech Open 2010 Business Competition winner, announced last week, is Puralytics, a company developing photochemical water purification products.Since 2006, the Cleantech Open has offered a venue for competition amonggreen tech start-up companies looking for funding. Winning alumni of the contest include Cool Earth Solar, Green Volts, and Micromidas. This year's winner, Puralytics, is an Oregon-based start-up that uses natural sunlight or LED lighting as the catalysts to remove pathogens, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals from waste water. Its processes under development have applications for both industrial manufacturing facilities and small rural communities. Puralytics will receive $250,000 in a combination of cash and services from sponsor companies.Runners up included EarthClean and OnChip Power.Minnesota-based Earth Clean came up with what many would call a practical clean idea for fighting fires. The start-up has developed a fire suppressant called TetraKO. The water additive gel, which can be used in existing fire hoses for building fires or aerial spray systems for forest fires, is non-toxic to plants and wildlife, and completely biodegradable. When mixed with water, TetraKO creates a sticky substance that adheres to vertical surfaces as well as ceilings, which the company says improves fire suppression and reduces chances for rekindling. Upon prolonged exposure to heat, the substance evaporates as steam leaving no residue. The other runner-up, which was also the Northeast Regional winner, is OnChip Power, a start-up based in Massachusetts that grew out of MIT. It makes miniature VHF power supply components. The company says its OnChip Power is "10x smaller size, 3x longer life, 20x faster response, 1/2 the component count.""You know the brick on your laptop power cord We make that thing the size of a quarter," OnChip Power Founder and CEO Vanessa Green said in a video interview backstage during the Cleantech Open awards ceremony in San Francisco on November 17.The "People's Choice" winner, which receives $100,000 in services from sponsor companies to bring their idea to market, went to Silicon Solar Solutions. The Arkansas-based start-up is developing a process to reduce the amount of silicon needed to manufacture solar cells without sacrificing their efficiency.

0 Vote(s)

This week's episode of Dialed In is brought to you by the letters L and G, as in LG Electronics, because the company has certainly dominated the headlines these past few days. LG looks to be making a big push in the smartphone market, as it continues to release new smartphones for the U.S. market, including possibly the first Android device to have a dual-core chipset. Plus, U.S. Cellular and Cellular South detail their LTE plans--well, sort of--and we come to the defense of basic cell phones. All this and more on this week's Dialed In.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft&39's Kinectimals may be a precursor to the future of Microsoft&39's advertising on the Xbox 360. (Credit:GameSpot/CBS Interactive)SAN FRANCISCO--Kinect is already proving to be a hot seller for Microsoft, but some of the real revenue opportunities could lay in ads that make use of its cameras.Speaking to a crowd as part of a panel discussion at the Web 2.0 Summit here, Yusuf Mehdi, who is Microsoft's senior vice president of Online Audience Business, said that Microsoft's gaming peripheral could one day end up offering Kinect owners a more tangible experience at trying out products right in their living rooms (emphasis mine):"The amazing thing is, you can use your hand to manipulate. And there's a little game product that my daughter was playing with this tiger where you can effectively pet the tiger. And you can imagine that that's an open IP platform. And you can imagine that as people are going around, they can look at a product, and you can imagine they can actually pick it up and take a look at it.And what would you pay to have someone pick up and sort of hold your brand, and look at it, and know--oh, this person--they were actually looking at it, as opposed to on the other aisle looking at the other product And so the number of different experiences that will open up platforms is going to be so rich--and I think John [Hayes] said that, is that you just have to kind of steal yourself from the fact there will be a lot of opportunities and that you just have to pick and choose which ones deliver value."Mehdi's possible future use for Kinect, which cannot currently be found on the console, comes less than a week after Microsoft VP Dennis Durkin suggested to audience members at BMO Capital Markets' Digital Entertainment Conference that the company could use the Kinect to serve up different ads based on things like who was using the console or how many people were in the room. Microsoft was quick to issue a statement that such a system was not currently in place but did not deny that it might come at a later date.Kinect's true advertising prowess and Microsoft's plans for it in that capacity are sure to unfold more extensively as the peripheral ages. As it stands, the company is only selling one third-party ad spot on the Kinect Hub--a specialized version of theXbox 360 dashboard, which is already speckled with advertising--including ones with motion and sound, which were introduced as part of the pre-Kinect system software overhaul. Building more interactive experiences into that spot could certainly demand bigger ad dollars, especially with detailed information on the person who is using it, as Mehdi had suggested. Besides talking about the future possibilities of Kinect, Mehdi also talked Bing--specifically some of the things the company does to test and take the product forward. Part of that includes running what Mehdi says are around 100 different versions of the search engine at any given time. Each one has slight variations on things like on-page marketing, keywords, and color. The company then sees the effects of those tests in real time and can make decisions about updates based on the data. One thing Mehdi says the company still spends a large amount of time on, and what it continues to build out, is how people accomplish tasks. Mehdi cited a situation like trying to look up flights and going to three of four different carriers being made simpler by adding some of those destination functionalities inside of Bing's product. To take that one step further, Mehdi said that same kind of problem is happening with mobile phone apps, so to get beyond that part of figuring out which app is the best, Mehdi envisions Bing delivering that basic function instead. "Even today, the little apps that we talk about become a problem when you have so many of them," Mehdi said. "If you want to plan a night out, the question is do I install and run Urbanspoon or Yelp or Opentable, which of these do I pick They're all good services. It would be so much easier if I could say 'hey book this table,' or 'I want to plan a night out, what are my options' and have the options come to bare." You can catch a replay the whole panel, which also includes Google's Nikesh Arora and American Express' John Hayes, below:Watch live streaming video from web20tv at livestream.com Josh Lowensohn Full Profile E-mail Josh Lowensohn E-mail Josh Lowensohn If you have a question or comment for Josh Lowensohn, you can submit it here.
Advanced Micro Devices appears ready to offer the stiffest challenge to Intel's Netbook processor yet. AMD's trump card: extra circuitry integrated into the main processor that brings a higher level of graphics horsepower to small, thin laptops. New AMD chips should appear in slim designs like the MSI X-340 early next year.(Credit:MSI)Today, at the company's finanical analyst day, AMD announced an umbrella technology dubbed "Brazos" that comprises two new lines of processors for Netbooks and small laptops.Aimed at designs that typically range from 10-inch to 13-inch diagonal screen sizes, the "Ontario" and "Zacate" line of chips graft AMD Radeon 6000 series graphics technology onto the main processor, or CPU. And that's exactly what may give AMD the edge in performance over Intel's Atom. "I would have to give the graphics edge to AMD particularly in Ontario," said Ben Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies. "[Though] Atom will still have the edge in lower power and performance per watt and probably get into smaller form factors." A write-up at Notebook Review was upbeat about price-performance: "If streaming online videos and playing games are important to you then you'll have a hard time finding Intel-based notebooks and netbooks with the same level of performance for less than $500."AMD is also touting the fact that it graphics silicon supports Microsoft's DirectX 11 technology for boosting gaming and multimedia performance. Intel's integrated graphics currently does not support DirectX 11. New laptops using the chips are expected early next year. The Ontario and Zacate processor lines are almost identical but run at different speeds. They will come in single and dual-core versions and have power envelopes of 9 watts and 18 watts, respectively. Here's a brief overview:AMD C-50 with AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics: dual-core CPU at 1.0GHz: 9W (Ontario) AMD C-30 with AMD Radeon HD 6250 Graphics: single-core CPU at 1.2GHz: 9W (Ontario) AMD E-350 with AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics: dual-core CPU at 1.6GHz: 18W (Zacate) AMD E-240 with AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics: single-core CPU at 1.5GHz: 18W (Zacate)

0 Vote(s)

A technology developed by Intel and backed by Apple is expected to appear earlier than previously thought, paving the way for very-high-speed connections on both PCs and Macs. Intel demonstrating Light Peak back in 2009.(Credit:Intel)Light Peak is now on track to appear in products in the first half of 2011--and likely earlier in the year than later, according to an industry source familiar with the progress of the technology. Light Peak is significantly faster than even USB 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously. In this respect, Light Peak eclipses USB 3.0, which is not supported by Apple and is only supported sporadically by PC makers on certain models. The reason Intel has yet to support USB 3.0 in the chipsets that accompany its processors. But Apple is expected to back Light Peak, if past comments from Intel still hold. Shortly after its annual developer conference in 2009, Intel said that it had showed the technology to third parties, got feedback, then incorporated the feedback into the next design, adding, at that time, that "Apple is an innovating force in the industry." (Apple has reportedly claimed that it conceived the idea for Light Peak.)If Apple implements Light Peak, it would be a safe bet that the company will have a lot to say about the technology--maybe with a catchy name in tow. And it would probably not be wild speculation to say that Apple would want to be the first to use it. An Intel demonstration in 2009 at its developer conference used a machine running Apple'sMac OS X. And Sony has, in the past, endorsed Light Peak also. Apple did not respond to questions. Whither USB 3.0Though USB 3.0 has arrived, it hasn't arrived on Apple's MacBooks nor on most PCs. The current USB 2.0 standard, which is found on virtually all laptops today, has been around a long time--indeed, too long for some consumers' tastes. Intel laid the groundwork for widespread use of USB 2.0 on PCs and devices in spring 2002 when it put the technology in its chipsets. And there's the rub. USB 2.0 is universal, USB 3.0--because it's not supported in Intel chipsets--is not, despite being up to 10 times faster. And there are other reasons cited for the lack of a dire need for USB 3.0. Peripheral devices, like printers, don't benefit from moving to 3.0. And a number of laptops already ship with the faster eSATA standard or FireWire (in the case of the MacBook), which Intel supports in its mobile chipsets. What's Intel's stance on USB 3.0 "We are absolutely committed to USB 3.0 and beyond that," said an Intel spokesperson. But don't expect USB 3.0 support in Intel chipsets anytime soon. Some credible speculation puts this as far out as 2012. That said, not everyone is necessarily waiting for Light Peak with bated breath. There are reports of Light Peak detractors, who claim it won't be widely implemented and that PC makers are, instead, gearing up for USB 3.0. But the USB 3.0 start-up phase has been going on for a long time. Moreover, USB 3.0 is now available on laptops from Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Asus, and Toshiba (laptop port replicator, in Toshiba's case) but only very selectively. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. See Intel Light Peak demonstration.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft and Yahoo said today that they have completed the shift to using Redmond's AdCenter tools to power paid search in the U.S. and Canada on Yahoo and its partner sites."As of today, AdCenter powers 100 percent of paid search advertisements on both Bing and Yahoo!, partner sites and publisher networks in the U.S. and Canada," the companies said in a joint statement. It's part of the companies' massive 10-year deal aimed at joining forces in search to better rival market leader Google.(Credit:Yahoo/Microsoft)Although the companies had a goal of doing so by the end of this month, they had said they were willing to push things back so as not to interfere with business in the all-important holiday shopping season."The transition comes after months of testing and collaboration between Yahoo! and Microsoft, with strict attention being paid to protecting the quality of experience for publishers and advertisers during the upcoming holiday season," the companies said.Yahoo made the shift to using Bing for organic (non-paid) search results in August. The companies still plan to move Yahoo's mobile search advertising to Microsoft's engine by the end of October. The international move will take more time, with the complete work not expected to be complete until early 2012. On the organic front, the companies plan to shift Spanish-speaking Latin America in the first quarter of next year. For paid search, the first countries will be the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, and India, which are slated for the second quarter.

0 Vote(s)

Verizon Communications saw revenue slip in the third quarter of 2010 as it experienced a decline in wireless subscribers. For the third quarter of 2010, Verizon today reported a profit of $881 million, or 31 cents a share. This was down from $1.18 billion, or 41 cents a share, during the same quarter a year earlier. Excluding certain items, such as merger and restructuring costs, earnings dropped to 56 cents per share from 60 cents and revenue declined 2.9 percent to $26.5 billion. Analysts had expected Verizon to report earnings of 54 cents on $26.3 billion in revenue.Verizon's wireless business struggled to keep up with rival AT&T during the quarter. Verizon added 997,000 new wireless customers in the third quarter, compared with 1.2 million customers a year before. The company added 584,000 "postpaid" subscribers, or those who have contracts.Meanwhile, AT&T, which announced third-quarter earnings yesterday, said it added 2.6 million new subscribers during the quarter. AT&T added 745,000 postpaid subscribers, of which about 80 percent of whom were using smartphones.AT&T's smartphone growth was fueled by sales of theApple iPhone. AT&T has had an exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the U.S. since the device's launch 2007. There are rumors that Verizon will get a version of the phone starting in January.Verizon has invested heavily in theGoogle Android platform, selling smartphones called Droids to compete against the iPhone. These devices, made mostly by Motorola and HTC, have done well for Verizon. But the third quarter demonstrates, these devices are still no iPhone. A Verizon iPhone could have a big effect on sales and subscription levels.Verizon also reported that its wireline business added 204,000 subscribers to its Fios Internet and TV, for a total of 3.3 million, up 26 percent from last year.During the quarterly conference call, Verizon executives confirmed that it will begin offering a tiered pricing plan as part of a promotion around the holidays. CFO John Killian said the company believes it will have a unique approach to pricing data services. He confirmed that the company will offer a $15 plan that will offer 150 Megabytes of data per month along with the company's $30 unlimited plan. The new $15 a month plan is designed to entice customers to upgrade to smartphones. He wouldn't comment on what the new pricing plans will look like long term. But he said that changes are likely to occur as Verizon rolls out its 4G LTE network in 38 markets later this year. "We like the concept of tiered pricing," said Killian, "but we will continue to look at this. We will probably have some pricing changes when we roll out 4G and 4G pricing, so there will be more to come then." Updated at 11:10 a.m. PDTwith information from the conference call.

0 Vote(s)

Forrester Research just released a new report on mobile augmented reality (AR) that says few companies are delivering &''real&'' augmented reality (AR) today.Augmented reality overlays digital information over your view of the physical world in a mobile device&'s camera view, as pictured left. It currently works by using a combination of the mobile phonea4a4s camera, compass, GPS data and other sensors to identify objects in the field of view, retrieve relevant data and overlay that data over the camera view. For example, you could point your camera at a building to get information about apartments for sale or the history of the building. The Forrester report says that AR requires object recognition on the mobile device itself as well as 3D rendering to superimpose images on the real world and that only a few companies like Metaio and Total Immersion provide this. Visual search like Google Goggles and GPS browser-based experiences such as that provided by Layar don&'t meet that definition of AR.Forrester also concludes that AR isnot yet scalable or mature. VentureBeat highlighted some of the problems (and possible solutions) with mobile AR technology at the start of 2010.Thus far, few consumers are using the technology. Layar is ahead of the pack with 1 million active users, while Metaioa4a4s Junaio mobile AR solution has been downloaded500,000 times.Mobile AR will merge with other technologies like location-based services, visual search, image and facial recognition and barcodes, predicts Forrester. In fact this already started to happen in 2010. In February we saw an application called Recognizr which combined facial recognition with AR to recognize people and pull up profile information. Both companies involved in Recognizr were acquired in 2010, facial recognition companyPolar Rose by Apple and interface specialists TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) by Blackberry-makers RIM. Metaio combined visual object search with AR so you can point your camera at everyday objects and get information about them. More recently, we saw the wonderfully useful WordLens which translates Spanish text to English (and vice versa) in the camera view in real time.In spite of these provisos, Forrester is optimistic on the future of mobile AR and expects more blue chip companies to join the AR fray in 2010. Currently the space is dominated by startups. The report points out thatQualcomm opened an AR research center. And eBay classifieds recently partnered with Metaio.Funding for mobile AR companies in 2010 went mainly to Layar (which did two rounds, 3.4 million in February and 14 million in December) and gaming companies like Tonchidot which received 12 million.Next Story: The best and worst in mobile 2010: It&'s all about Apple and Android Previous Story: Game companies raise record $1.05B in 2010, up 58 percentPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: augmented reality, visual searchCompanies: Forrester, layar, Metaio, Qualcomm, Total Immersion Tags: augmented reality, visual searchCompanies: Forrester, layar, Metaio, Qualcomm, Total ImmersionCiara Byrne is a full time techie and part-time writer.
