Dish Online&39's HBO promotion.(Credit:Screenshot by Don Reisinger/CNET)Dish Online viewers can now watch HBO and Cinemax content.More than 1,800 pieces of HBO's and Cinemax's programming, including movies, television shows, and other content, are now available on the satellite provider's online-streaming service. However, only Dish subscribers who pay for access to those movie channels will be able to watch the content on Dish Online, the company said in its announcement yesterday."Dish Network customers with an HBO or Cinemax subscription can also get new series titles after their premiere--plus bonus content including interviews, recaps and behind-the-scenes extras--none of which are available through Netflix's online service," Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming for Dish Network, said in a statement.Dish Network's dig against Netflix is telling. HBO has been saying it wants full control of its programming ever since it launched the HBO Go streaming service last year. HBO is apparently willing to break its own rule for Dish--but not for Netflix.A "high-placed Time Warner executive" told The Hollywood Reporter in January that in order for Netflix to even have a shot at getting HBO content, Netflix would need to start charging subscribers $20 per month, rather than the $7.99 per month they currently pay for streaming only.In addition to Dish Online, HBO hinted earlier this week that its programming will soon be coming to theApple iPad andiPhone and to Android-based devices. A video promoting the new option flashed "05.02.11," indicating that an app would be launching on those platforms early next month.

0 Vote(s)

Somewhere between a nightly and a beta liesFirefox Aurora, Mozilla's first public browser under its new publishing schedule. Announced yesterday, Firefox Aurora for Windows (download), Mac (download), and Linux (download), is most analogous to the intent behind the Google Chrome developer's channel (download Windows | Mac | Linux): to provide a place where users who don't mind browser instability can test out new features, and contribute feedback to the developers.(Credit:Mozilla)Mozilla is now running all four of the browser builds that it mentioned in this blog post: Minefield, or the nightly test builds' the new Aurora' the beta build, which users who downloaded the Firefox 4 betas are still using despite there not being an official beta release at this time' and the Firefox final release, which is the stable version most Firefox users have.Currently, Mozilla Firefox Aurora 5.0a2 doesn't appear to offer anything different from Minefield or the stable release, but that will change as Mozilla pursues a release schedule similar to Google Chrome's six-week release cycle. If you do notice anything different between the current Aurora and stable builds, let me know in the comments below.

0 Vote(s)

The latest stable version of Opera 11 debuts today with a faster Turbo, an expanded Speed Dial, and some plug-in tweaks. Opera 11.10 for Windows (download), Mac (download), and Linux (download), also makes a handful of other changes to the browser, notably adding in more HTML5 support, mail client improvements, an updated rendering engine, and better battery management on laptops. The version of Turbo that debuts in Opera 11.10 is up to four times faster than before, according to the company.(Credit:Opera)The changes to Opera Turbo and Speed Dial are the most apparent changes in Opera 11.10. The Norwegian company says that Turbo is four times faster than before, and Opera spokesman Thomas Ford said that those speed improvements are likely to filter down to Opera's mobile versions since the improvements were made to Turbo's servers. The gains were achieved in part by adopting support for Google's WebP image format, which resulted in higher image quality in Turbo mode. This still allowed sites to render 35 percent smaller and 15 percent faster than in Opera 11, according to Opera's internal benchmarks.Speed Dial, the feature that Opera developed to show frequently visited site thumbnails in a grid format, can now be configured to show an unlimited number of dials. The layout is customizable, and a new slider helps users zoom to show more or fewer dials by default.Other changes include the improved plug-in support that now offers to download and install plug-ins like Adobe Flash if missing from your system, a feature long-present in other browsers' partial HTML5 File API support, which means that Opera ought to be added soon to the list of official browsers that support Gmail' Web Open Font Format support, for next-generation font rendering' and search hijacking protection.Speed Dial can now handle an infinite number of thumbnails, and can be zoomed in or out.(Credit:Opera)IMAP has been improved in the built-in Opera Mail e-mail client, so that it better manages "special status" folders such as Trash, Spam, and Sent Items.
Hulu CEO Jason Kilar(Credit:Greg Sandoval/CNET)Hulu is forecasting sales of close to half a billion dollars and more than a million Hulu Plus subscribers this year.In a blog posted yesterday, CEO Jason Kilar marked the end of the first quarter with some notable figures and projections about the company's recent past and upcoming future. The forecast of almost $500 million in sales for the year follows the first quarter in which revenue shot up around 90 percent compared with last year's initial quarter, according to Kilar. For 2010 as a whole, Hulu took in sales of $263 million.Touting the expected rise in Hulu Plus subscribers to more than a million this year after the pay option launched last summer, Kilar said that as far as he knows, this marks the fastest start of any online video subscription service.Of course, Hulu Plus has faced a bumpy road. Its initial $9.95 price tag, the inclusion of ads, and the limited selection compared with Netflix triggered complaints among many users. Competing against the likes of Netflix, Hulu was forced to drop the price of Hulu Plus to $7.99 in November. In an effort to expand its offerings, Kilar pointed out that Hulu increased its number of content partners to 264 in this year's first quarter, up from the 211 partners it had during the same time period a year ago. During that time, the company saw ups and down with its partners. Viacom broke off with Hulu early last year amid concerns that the partnership wasn't yielding enough revenue. However, a renewed deal between the two in February has since allowed Viacom shows from MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, and other cable channels to appear on Hulu and Hulu Plus.Hulu's "content community" is expected to earn around $300 million over the course of the year, said Kilar. The service is also boasting more advertisers: 289 for the first quarter of 2011 compared with 194 in the same quarter last year.Despite Hulu's rosy results so far this year and Kilar's positive forecast, the company and its CEO are in the midst of some challenges.Reports have arisen about tension between Hulu and its owners, NBC Universal, Disney, and News Corp. Hulu and its parents have reportedly long disagreed over key aspects of Hulu's basic business model, such as how much content should be free. Certain content providers themselves have also reportedly complained that Hulu brings in too little revenue and disrupts their other forms of distribution. Kilar almost certainly added fuel to the fire in February with a blog post in which he criticized traditional TV advertising and distribution.

0 Vote(s)

Chrome and Safari continue to gain share of worldwide usage while IE and Firefox continue to lose. Note that statistics shifted in February 2011 a little because of updated population figures changed how much some countries were weighted.(Credit:Data from Net Applications' chart by Stephen Shankland/CNET)Despite arriving a week later,Firefox 4 is outpacing Internet Explorer 9 in real-world use so far, new statistics show.Microsoft released IE9 on March 14, and Mozilla's Firefox 4 arrived on March 22--both brand-new even by the fast-moving standards of today's software market. By month's end, IE9 accounted for 1.0 percent of browsing activity worldwide, according to statistics from analytics firm Net Applications. Firefox 4, though, reached 1.7 percent, despite its later start.Firefox 4 has a big advantage in usage statistics over IE9: Windows XP. Mozilla's browser works on the decade-old operating system, but IE9 requires Windows Vista SP2 orWindows 7. Given that Windows XP machines represent 54.4 percent of the usage on the Internet right now to Windows 7's 24.2 percent and Vista's 10.6 percent, Windows XP is a big ally even if the growth is with Windows 7.IE9 has injected a massive dose of new competition into the browser market. Microsoft's browser supports a raft of new Web standards, led the charge for hardware acceleration, and offers much higher performance than its predecessors. But IE still isn't the browser of the technophiles, so it's reasonable to expect IE9's usage to trail that of Firefox.Expect usage of both to increase more when people are actively encouraged to update."Firefox 3.x users have not yet received a major update, but will receive it soon (usually, major updates come 60-90 days after a major release). If they check for an update manually, they of course will find Firefox 4," said Mozilla spokeswoman Valerie Ponell. As for Microsoft, "Internet Explorer 9 will not be broadly rolled out on Windows Update until the end of June," said Ryan Gavin, senior director of IE business and marketing, in a blog post. When all versions were taken into account, IE still leads the overall market with 55.9 percent of usage in March, with Firefox in second place at 21.8 percent. Only IE, though, ceded share to the up-and-coming browsers in the market right now, Google's Chrome and Apple'sSafari.IE dropped 0.9 percentage points from February to March, while Firefox staved off the rivals with a 0.1 percentage point gain. That's not much, but it's a stronger showing than the steady losses that Firefox has experienced since reaching its high-water mark of 24.7 percent of usage in November 2009.Chrome continued its steady rise, from 10.9 percent to 11.6 percent. Safari rose from 6.4 percent to 6.6 percent. And fifth-place Opera stayed level at 2.2 percent for both February and March.Net Applications' statistics are based on the activity of about 160 million visitors per month to Web sites using its services. It adjusted its technique slightly for February's statistics after the U.S. government released new per-country Internet usage statistics that the company factors into its results. For example, IE got a small boost in February because it's widely used in China, which showed higher Internet usage, while Firefox slipped a bit."This adjustment corrects an increasing inaccuracy over time as population shifts occur and reflects reality more closely than unadjusted numbers," Net Applications said last month.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Jeff Bakalar/CNET)Today the Nintendo 3DS officially launches in the U.S. You've already read the review, but what about the games Sixteen are available for purchase today, and we've had our hands on the majority of them. We've rounded up our thoughts on these titles to provide a handy guide for launch day. Madden Football: EA's powerhouse NFL franchise is somewhat less so on the 3DS: It doesn't even get a number (just "Madden Football"). On the other hand, the depth effect of Nintendo 3DS gaming seems to suit sports games perfectly: the field seems more expansive in 3D. NFL junkies will appreciate the improved graphics and animation, but it's a seriously pared-down experience: no franchise mode, no minigames...not even multiplayer (no joke). For the hard-core fans only. Pilotwings Resort: Easily the 3DS' flagship game, Pilotwings Resort does provide some impressive 3D flying fun in a trio of apparatuses. While the mission-based challenges are fun, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of them. However, plenty of time can be wasted flying around the island and trying to discover hidden items and areas. Be careful not to max out the 3D setting here, it's tough to see straight when it's turned all the way up. Lego Star Wars III: Here's the nice surprise about the Clone Wars-themed Lego Star Wars game: not only is it good, but it feels just like a console game. You could argue the game doesn't need 3D at all, but the birds-eye-view levels almost become little dioramas with the 3D slider turned up. With its plethora of characters and extras, this is a launch game that'll last a while.Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition: Having Street Fighter IV in the palm of your hands is certainly something to get excited about and the game does a great job at shrinking the console version down to a portable size. While the fighting controls perform well, we're just not sure this is a game that needs to be in 3D. Sure, the background depth-effect provides a nice amount of eye candy, but in a game where button mashing can un-sync the player from 3D, we think most people are better off playing in 2D. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D:This is the real must-have sports launch game for the 3DS. While Madden might still be choice for NFL nuts, Konami's excellent port of their solid footie franchise feels silky-smooth on the 3DS. While 3D isn't necessary in order to enjoy the game, the added depth actually helps perspective on a crowded field. Not only are tons of teams available, but this one's got local one-on-one wireless play, too. Super Monkey Ball 3D: We love the Super Monkey Ball franchise, but the 3DS version seems a little sparse. The 70-plus levels don't get significantly challenging until about halfway through the game. There are two minigames, though: a Mario Kart-like racer that feels like a whole separate game, and a 4-player mini-brawl that'll kill a few minutes, provided you can round up three other 3DS owners. Nintendogs + Cats: There's no denying Nintendogs + Cats is the cutest launch game available for the 3DS launch, we're just not sure it's worth a purchase for those who've played the DS original. That said, the dogs do look and act more realistic than in the past, so for those looking for a healthy dose of adorable, Nintendogs + Cats is worth taking for a walk. Rayman 3D: While we had a few issues with some ghosting when playing in 3D, Rayman is a solid platforming adventure game for the 3DS. It's just a port of the classic title Rayman 2: The Great Escape, so for those who've yet to have the pleasure of a playthrough, having a go in 3D is definitely an added bonus. Steel Diver: At first glance, this side-scrolling submarine shooter feels like a weird throwaway launch game. Give it a little time: the controls and level challenges get surprisingly tricky, and the 3D tunnels show off the 3DS 3D effects excellently. A 3D motion-controlled periscope-shooter mode will just make you dizzy fast. Bonus: a turn-based strategy game mode feels like shades of Nintendo's old Advance Wars. The Sims 3: It's the Sims, but in 3D. To EA's credit, this handheld version feels more robust than previous handheld Sims, but...well...we just can't get excited about The Sims anymore. Do you know anyone who can Ridge Racer 3D: Namco's racer gets trotted out for every game system launch we can remember, and it's here to welcome in the 3DS, too. We initially soured on the old-fashionedcar controls, but the game's got plenty of race modes, unlockable cars, customizable upgrades, and even a mode that will custom-create a race circuit based on how much time you'd like to play. Once you let the 3D race tracks sink into your eyeballs for a few minutes, it's also one of the most immersive launch games around. Asphalt 3D: The second of two racing titles available at launch is Asphalt 3D, a more arcade-like experience than Ridge Racer 3D. Fans of the Burnout series will notice a few similarities, including elimination and survival races. We can't help but notice that Asphalt doesn't run as smooth as Ridge Racer, but each title's 3D is experience is among the more satisfying out of all the launch games. Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars: Be warned: Shadow Wars is not like any of the Ghost Recon games you're probably used to playing. In fact, it's actually a turn-based strategy game where players manage different classes of Ghosts. Each mission has a different objective and the 3D turns the game into a sort of dimensional board game. There's not a whole lot of action here, but turn-based fans will be served well.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)Since Apple has still not announced how manyiPad 2s it's sold since the device went on sale last Friday, analysts and onlookers alike have tried to scrap together numbers from line counts, anecdotal stock reports, and order numbers. That last part of the strategy may no longer work, however. Citing sources familiar with Apple's ordering system, Apple Insider reports that Apple has tweaked its Web ordering tools to randomize order numbers so that users can't figure out how many units the company has moved between two different points in time.During the first iPad launch, forum users on Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board shared Web order numbers with one another and put them into a spreadsheet, eventually discovering that they were in a specific order. Putting them in line and with time codes, the group was able to determine that Apple was selling around 25,000 per hour, well ahead of company's official announcement a day and a half later. Along with the randomization claim, Apple Insider says Apple's early opening at its retail stores yesterday to cope with long lines was actually using stock delivered the day before. That move, the blog's source says, was to keep mistakes from being made in the rush to get freshly-delivered iPad 2 units to buyers. So far analysts have estimated that on its first day of iPad 2 sales, Apple sold to frenzied buyers anywhere from half a million of the devices, all the way to 1 million, compared to the 300,000 it sold on the first day of sales for the first-generation iPad. Last year the company revealed its first day sales just two days after the device went on sale.

0 Vote(s)

Part of Apple&39's Granny Smith trademark application with the European Trademarks Office.(Credit:Patently Apple)Some four years after Apple Inc. and Beatles-backed record label Apple Corps announced that the two companies had settled their trademark dispute (with Apple Inc. coming out the owner), theMac and iOS device maker has filed paperwork with the European Trademarks Office seeking to make the famous Granny Smith logos its own abroad. The filings, unearthed by Patently Apple, cover 14 international trademark classifications in common areas like advertising, games, and computer hardware, and in more obscure ones like precious metals and building construction. Following the 2007 settlement, Apple had filed trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that showed the company having been transfered the rights to use the Apple Corps Granny Smith logo, as well as cross-sections of the fruit photo as part of its business. One of the apple's most recent manifestations since appearing on the album and disc art on the "Abbey Road" album, was in the form of a fruit-shaped USB stick that shipped with the entire Beatles catalog back in 2009. That catalog has since arrived as a digital download on Apple's iTunes store.

0 Vote(s)

&34'He&39's gettin&39' killed out there!&34'&34'No, he&39's gettin&39' mad!&34'(Credit:Screenshot by Rick Broida)I've always been a fan of the Fight Night series of console games, so I couldn't wait to strap on the virtual mitts for EA's new Fight Night Champion foriPhone. After going a few rounds with Ali, Tyson, and 18 other boxing legends, I can safely say this: the game lives up to the Fight Night name.Which is to say, it's fun but flawed. Fortunately, it's roughly a 90/10 split between the two. Anyone familiar with the console versions is sure to have a ball with this one.The app probably comes closest (in gameplay, not graphics) to Fight Night 4. It gives you 20 famous boxers (and two from "the console storyline," to quote EA) to fight as and against, but you can also create your own character and build a career. This is no arcade-style boxing game a la Beast Boxing 3D--there's real depth here. Your character actually ages and faces eventual retirement. As with its console counterparts, half the battle in Fight Night Champion is learning the controls. EA did a commendable job leveraging the touch screen, with actions that logically correspond to moves: tap to jab, swipe sideways to throw a hook, swipe up for an uppercut, tap and hold both thumbs to block, and so on.But there's a lot to remember, so give yourself some time to learn everything. It took me three or four matches before I felt like I'd mastered the controls. And even now there's one area that gives me trouble: movement. You move your boxer by tilting your iPhone, and I find it really hard to multitask that alongside the various screen controls. As for the actual gameplay, it's fast and furious, though I do have one gripe: when you block or slip a punch, there seems to be some lag before you can answer it. What's the point of good defense if you can't take advantage of itAlso, the game crashed the first time I ran it. After resetting my iPhone, it worked--but this time with no audio. (Awesome crowd noises and ringside commentary accompany each bout.) Eventually it ran properly, but obviously EA has some bugs to iron out.I wasn't able to test Fight Night Champion's multiplayer modes, which support head-to-head boxing over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. (Note: multiplayer requires a third- or fourth-geniPod or iPhone.) In an ideal world, EA would add online multiplayer, as all the Fight Night games are best when played against other humans.A few minor gripes aside, this is my favorite iPhone fighting game to date. All that's missing is aniPad version.

0 Vote(s)

Since then however, we've yet to get a proper gaming impression of the phone, at least until this afternoon when a few CNET editors headed over to a Sony event to get our hands on it. Our colleague Dan Ackerman had a chance to handle it too, and compared the gaming experience with that on the iPhone. Here, we'll focus a bit more on the feel of the controls. It's clear that even though the Xperia Play is not technically a "Playstation Phone," Sony made great pains to emulate the Playstation controls with the Play. You get two four-way directional pads -- one with the usual D-Pad arrows and the other with Sony's own buttons -- along with left and right shoulder buttons, plus the Select and Start keys. These keys act and feel as expected -- they press down easily and are spaced evenly apart so that I wasn't scrambling to find the right button, much like how it feels on my Playstation controller at home. The overall heft of the phone is much thinner and lighter than that of the PSP, which makes it feel a bit more fragile at first. I soon got accustomed to that however, and managed to immerse myself in the game (It was Gameloft's Asphalt 6). The biggest knock on the Xperia Play is with the so-called analog controls. Instead of two joysticks, you get two inset touch-sensitive circles, which act as a strange virtual analog control. Obviously this is meant to keep the phone slender, but we wonder if it wouldn't be that difficult to have a flat analog pad similar to the one on the PSP. As you might expect, the touch-sensitive circles just don't have the same physical feedback as real joysticks, and it was a bit of a pain to keep swiping at it when I was maneuvering around sharp corners on the Asphalt race track. However, I unexpectedly grew to really like the touch-sensitive circles for smaller side to side movements. In fact, I ended up using the touch-sensitive circle for most of the race, and only going to the D-Pad when I had to drift sharply. However, I fear the odd touch analog controls has too steep of a learning curve. This was especially apparent when I was playing an RPG called Dungeon Defenders. I had to use both analog controls to move the character and change where it's facing. Adjusting to one touch control was bad enough, but two I spent quite a bit of time just trying to learn how to get across a room properly, much less learning all the other controls. That said, I don't think the analog controls were so bad in Air Attack, a retro arcade game where you fly a plane and shoot at enemy aircraft. Sure it was easier with the physical D-Pad, but it didn't take that long to get used to swiping about on the circle. It seems to me that the analog controls on the Xperia Play are suited to some games more than others. In the end though, I really would much prefer a physical analog pad.The key for me, however, was gameplay immersion. As soon as I got into a game, I was swept in, and the controls were secondary. After a few minutes, my right thumb would hurt after an intense bout of button mashing. I realized that this is rarely the sort of experience that you would get on aniPhone or other smartphone -- that sort of visceral physical button experience is missing. Real gamers know that part of the joy of gaming is its intensity -- the sore thumbs, the blisters on your hands, the sweat from your palms -- and the Xperia Play does deliver at least a little bit of that. It's just a shame that it doesn't deliver more.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)The Smart Fortwo is a goofy-lookingcar, and even sillier in cabriolet form. But it is designed with a surprising amount of practicality. In cities, you can park where no car has parked before. And any city dweller knows the value of that. The cabin does not feel cramped, as long as you only try to put two people in it, and the cargo area is actually useful. We won't say the Fortwo is a high-tech roller. In stock form the two-speaker stereo doesn't even come with a CD player. But it can be optioned up, a cure for most of its issues. You can even upgrade to power steering. What can't be changed is the pitiful way the transmission shifts. That, you just have to cope with.Read our review of the 2011 Smart Fortwo Passion Cabriolet.

0 Vote(s)

Apple is reportedly looking at ways to make the iPhone cheaper than the current $199 subsidized starting price.(Credit:CBS Interactive)Is the nextiPhone going to be smaller Bigger Or maybe cheaper"Cheaper" is the latest in a series of confusing and seemingly contradictory rumors about the nature of the next iPhone Apple has in store. Today the New York Times chimed in to say that contrary to a previous report in The Wall Street Journal, the next iPhone is not going to be smaller, but Apple is working on ways to make it cheaper and more accessible for buyers.Apple is focused on making the iPhone attractive to a larger audience, according to the report. That includes offering a phone more easily controlled by voice commands for those who have no interest in or can't use a virtual keyboard. As for how the company is considering bringing down the cost of the phone, it wouldn't be by downsizing the screen. Rather, using cheaper internal components, less memory, or a lower-quality camera are options Apple is considering, according to the Times source who has apparently worked on several iPhone prototypes.Another source says it wouldn't make sense to make a smaller iPhone (we agree) because of how it would affect developers who make their apps formatted to a particular screen size. A "senior Apple executive" also tells the Times that Apple isn't interested in having a lineup of multiple models of iPhones. It doesn't sound like a cheaper iPhone is a sure thing yet, just something Apple is thinking about. One thing's for sure: the next iPhone isn't expected until this summer. So anticipate many more months of rumors to come.

0 Vote(s)

President Barack Obama today proposed boosting funds for clean-energy research and deployment in his 2012 budget by slashing subsidies for fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. The budget would provide the Department of Energy with $29.5 billion for fiscal year 2012, up 4.2 percent from the proposed 2011 budget, and up 12 percent from the enacted 2010 budget. Some $8 billion would support research in clean energy like wind, solar, and advanced batteries. "Whomever leads in the global, clean-energy economy will also take the lead in creating high-paying, highly skilled jobs for its people," the administration said in the budget. The budget would also provide $853 million to support new nuclear energy technologies, such as small modular reactors. The White House asked for $36 billion in federal loan guarantees to help finance the building of nuclear power plants, as it did last year. The loan program already has $18 billion in authority. To help pay for the clean-energy initiatives, the White House is asking Congress to repeal $3.6 billion in oil, natural gas, and coal subsidies, a move that would total $46.2 billion over a decade. In addition, the budget cuts funding for oil and gas research and for hydrogen fuels programs. But many Republicans oppose cutting subsidies for fossil fuels, saying it would hurt industries that provide jobs while the economy is still fragile. "Given the broad difference in priorities between House Republicans and the White House on energy issues, we believe that few of the proposed cuts and expansions...will become law," Whitney Stanco, an energy policy analyst at MF Global, said in a research note.Republicans, who now have control of the House of Representatives, have also proposed to cut funding for the Environmental Protection Agency's program to regulate greenhouse gases, saying Congress should be the one to decide whether to fight climate change, not the administration. Republicans may try to force a government shutdown if the Obama administration does not agree to its spending cuts. But analysts said a delay in EPA climate regulations led by Congress was more likely than shutting down the government over an environmental rule. The Obama budget cuts the 2012 EPA budget by about $1.3 billion or about 13 percent with reductions in a clean diesel program and in Great Lakes restoration projects. Stanco said the budget's funding for electric vehicles could be likeliest to make it into law as it could be paired with funding for natural-gas vehicles. The budget proposes $588 million for vehicle technologies, an increase of 88 percent from current levels. The budget would double the number of energy innovation hubs to six to bring scientists to work on topics like rare earth elements, energy storage, and batteries, and development of smart-grid technologies designed to make electricity transmission efficient.
A body modification artist in a Los Angeles tattoo shop installed the camera system in Bilal's head. (Credit:Brad Farwell)Professor Wafaa Bilal hasn't been feeling so well lately. And it's no wonder. His body hasn't been entirely accommodating of the camera he had implanted in the back of his head to take photos of what's going on behind his back. So, for now at least, he's had part of it surgically removed. That might be a relief to those who found themselves walking behind the NYU arts professor/cyborg and staring disconcerted at a strange round contraption jutting out from his skull. Bilal had the shooter installed last year as part of a project called "3rd I." For the past couple of months, it has spontaneously captured images at a rate of one per minute, wirelessly transmitting them via laptop to a Web site for public viewing, as well as to monitors in an installation at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar. But according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, Bilal's body rejected part of the camera's apparatus, one of three posts between his skin and skull that held the digital camera in place. Antibiotics and steroids didn't ease the discomfort, the Chronicle reported, so last week Bilal had to resort to surgery to remove part of the system that had been put in place by a Los Angeles body modification artist. He does not, however, view the lens-ectomy as the end of the 3rd I project, which he describes as an attempt to objectively (without the direction of hands and eyes) document his life. Once his wound heals, he may try implanting a different, more skull-friendly cam, but for now, he'll just tie the camera to the back of his neck. The 3rd I headcam, the Iraqi-born professor says in an artist's statement, "arises from a need to objectively capture my past as it slips behind me from a non-confrontational point of view." He says he is left with only ephemeral memories of his journey from Iraq to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the U.S., and wishes he could have better recorded his experiences. This isn't Bilal's first provocative fusion of technology and the arts, however. In 2007, he mounted a video installation called "Domestic Tension" that invited the public to log on to WafaaBilal.com to splatter the artist with paint using arrow icons to maneuver a remote-control paintgun. The Iraqi-born artist said he viewed the constant assaults as a metaphor for the danger and confinement his family and others face back home. An image captured by Bilal's implanted headcam. The artist says he wants to objectively document his daily life.(Credit:Wafaa Bilal&39's head, via 3rdi.me)

0 Vote(s)

Though Google is still king of the search engine arena, Bing is creeping up, according to a report released yesterday by market researcher Experian Hitwise.Looking at the global search engine market in January, Google took home almost 68 percent of all searches. But that marked a 2 percentage point dip from December. The number of searches run at Bing.com and Bing-powered sites collectively rose by 6 points, giving Microsoft's search engine a 27.4 percent cut of the market.(Credit:Experian Hitwise)Breaking down the Bing results, Bing.com by itself accounted for 12.8 percent of all searches, a 21 percentage point jump from December. Searches conducted at Yahoo sites powered by Bing slid 4 points, giving those 14.6 percent of the market, said Experian Hitwise.Further, Bing and Yahoo combined outscored Google in January's success rate, which indicates the number of search results that actually triggered a visit to a Web site. This rate is considered key as it measures not the quantity of searches but rather the accuracy and relevancy of the results returned. For the month, Bing/Yahoo scored an 81 percent success rate, according to the data, surpassing the 65 percent rate achieved by Google and virtually the same as the rates in December.(Credit:Experian Hitwise)Google and Bing were both on the warpath recently after Google accused its rival of stealing its search results following a surprise sting operation. Reps from both companies found themselves in a heated exchange at a conference last week debating the accuracy and validity of Google's findings.Launching such a sting operation could be a sign that Google is growing more concerned about Microsoft's rising chunk of the search engine market. Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently told reporters that he sees Microsoft and not Facebook as a major competitor, calling it the company with "more cash, more engineers, more global reach."

0 Vote(s)

The Department of Energy today released a financial report card on its ARPA-E research program, saying that grants for clean-energy technology development led to larger investments from the private sector.Six early-stage energy technology companies received $23.6 million in grants, sized from $750,000 to $8 million each. One year later, those companies attracted a total of $100 million from outside investors. "This amount of private capital support indicates that the business community is hungry to invest in truly innovative solutions to the country's energy challenges," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement. The six companies the DOE chose to single out, which work in solar, wind, and battery storage, represent just a portion of the grants that ARPA-E has awarded. According to a report prepared for Congress (click for PDF), the $151 million in ARPA-E awards in 2009 brought in $57 million from the private sector at the time of the grants. Within two months, those companies attracted an additional $33 million from the private sector.Looking for a clean-energy home run (photos) The Obama administration is eager to highlight positive results from the ARPA-E program and from investments in clean-energy research and technology. During the State of the Union address last month, President Obama called for reining in subsidies for oil companies to pay for government-funded research in clean energy technologies to spur economic growth and exports.Obama today also announced a program to spur investment in commercial building efficiency through tax incentives and government financing. The ARPA-E program has attracted the attention of many scientists and entrepreneurs and has become a favorite of Secretary Chu. Its mandate is to finance high-risk ventures with a big potential pay-off that are navigating the transition from basic science to commercialization.ARPA-E was created in 2007 but not funded until 2009 with the passage of the stimulus plan. Now, the DOE hopes to double its budget from its initial rate of $400 million over two years, although it faces significant challenges advancing its energy agenda with the current Congress.Venture capitalists continue to funnel money into green-technology companies. But because of the high cost and difficulty of scaling energy technologies, government funding has become an important part of start-ups' financing strategy. Here are the companies that the DOE chose to highlight:1366 Technologies, which is developing a process to cut the cost of manufacturing silicon solar cells. The MIT spin-off received a $4 million grant that accelerated its development and helped attract an additional $33.4 million.Envia Systems with Argonne National Laboratory is making lithium-ion batteries with better energy density that will allow for longer electric vehicle driving range. General Motors intends to use the technology in future versions of its electriccars.FloDesign Wind Turbine is making a wind turbine that uses a design similar to a jet engine's. Because they are smaller, the turbines, which concentrate the wind to boost power output, could be used in conjunction with traditional windmills in wind farms, according to the company.SunCatalytix is designing a low-cost catalyst for an electrolyzer for making hydrogen from water. The company's vision is for buildings to use solar panels to run a hydrogen fuel cell, which would then power a home.General Compression is developing an air compressor that would be attached to a wind turbine to store energy. The compressed air would be stored in underground caverns and released to generate electricity, allowing turbines to supply the grid when needed.24M, another MIT spin-off, is designing a lithium-ion battery with higher energy density than existing batteries. It was founded by the same MIT professor who started battery maker A123 Systems.Correction at 9 a.m. PT: The 2009 ARPA-E grants totaled $151 million.

0 Vote(s)

Verizon Wireless will begin throttling the data speeds of customers who use an "extraordinary amount" of data, according to a document posted on the company's Web site.First reported by BGR.com, the PDF on the Verizon site says the new rules will not affect the majority of the company's customers. However, if you are a heavy data user, you should be aware that your speeds will drop."If you use an extraordinary amount of data and fall within the top 5 percent of Verizon Wireless data users we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand," states the document.Verizon said it is taking the steps "to ensure that the remaining 95% of data customers aren't negatively affected by the inordinate data consumption of just a few users."The company doesn't say how much data constitutes an "extraordinary amount," only that the new rules will affect the top 5 percent. Theoretically, that means you could be affected one month, but not the next even though you consume the same amount of data.In addition to throttling data speeds of some users, Verizon also described new "optimization and transcoding technologies" it is implementing in its network to deliver files more efficiently.Verizon began accepting preorders for theiPhone today and even reportedly asked its employees to delay ordering the phone because it anticipates "unprecedented" demand for the device.

0 Vote(s)

Sony has trimmed $50 off the list price of the PRS-350 Pocket Edition, making it a more tempting purchase. (Credit:Sony)When it comes to e-readers these days, most of the action here in the U.S. seems to be concentrated around the Kindle, Nook, andiPad. But every week or so, we'll notice a traffic spike on CNET for an e-reader that isn't from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Inevitably, this is due to a special discount that some store is running on the product or perhaps even an appearance in a Best Buy circular. That discount price is usually pretty attractive--and has to be--to compete with the Kindle with Wi-Fi at $139 and the Nook Wi-Fi at $149. But even at $99, we'd have a hard time recommending these products. Here's a quick look at some of the "deals" we've seen out there. Borders Kobo Wireless eReader: Recently, Borders was offering the Kobo Wireless eReader, which carries a list price of $139.99, for $99.99. It's back up to $139.99. This e-ink e-reader, which features an attractive enough design and wireless connectivity, is an OK product, but at $139.99 it's simply not viable. At $99.99, it's a tad tempting (it does offer support for lending from your local libraries), but it's still worth spending the extra $40 on the Kindle, which has a better screen and performance, along with a superior e-bookstore.Velocity Micro Cruz Reader: The Cruz Reader is an Android-basedtablet with a resistive touch screen. Some retailers have it for $119, but we've seen it advertised for as low as $99. While it offers decent functionality, its biggest problem is the resistive touch display, which doesn't operate nearly as smoothly as today's capacitive touch screens found on the iPad, Nook Color, and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Sure, those products cost a lot more, but the user experience is much better.Sony PRS-350SC Pocket Reader: Sony started the PRS-350SC out at $179.99 but the price has now dropped to $129.99. If you want a compact e-reader (the screen is 5 inches compared with the Kindle's 6-inch screen) and can live without the Wi-Fi connectivity, the PRS-350SC merits some consideration. It's a decent little e-reader that supports the EPUB format and allows you to check out e-books from your local library. Still, the Kindle looms large for only 10 bucks more.Sharper Image Literati (white): Bed Bath & Beyond has the Literati on "clearance" sale for $99. It has a color LCD, Wi-Fi connectivity, and integration with the Kobo eBook store. The best thing we can say about it is that it's not terrible and comes with a protective case. We still think it's worth spending the extra $40 on the Kindle.Pandigital Novel (black): The Pandigital Novel, an Android-based tablet with a 7-inch resistive touch screen, got off to a bad start because it was rushed to market and had buggy software along with sluggish performance. Pandigital has since made some improvements, but it's still a tough sell at around $150 (we've seen it for less, but not in recent days). While it offers good functionality, the overall experience, like the Cruz Reader, makes you feel like you're using last year's technology. That may be OK for some but we've heard the Novel has seen high return rates (note: it comes in black and white versions that offer slightly different specs). If you have differing views on these products and other budget e-readers we might have missed, feel free to comment below. We hope that later this year we'll see a compelling e-reader for $99, but for now, the Kindle and Nook--even with their higher prices--remain better choices for budget-conscious consumers.

0 Vote(s)

Texas Instruments admitted during an earnings conference call today that Nvidia beat it to market with the first dual-core processor fortablets. This is surprising statement from a company that has been in the business of building power-efficient chips based on the ARM design for close to two decades. ARM is the basic chip design being used by Apple, Nvidia, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments for tablets. TI licensed its first ARM design back in 1993 (PDF). Nvidia, by contrast, is an upstart in the ARM chip market, announcing its first ARM processor only in 2008. Nvidia's dual-core Tegra 2 processor is most notably in Motorla's Xoom tablet, arguably the highest profile tablet sinceApple's iPad was announced last year. The Xoom is expected to go on sale as early as next month. Texas Instruments' answer to the Tegra 2 is OMAP 4, TI's first dual-core ARM processor for tablets.TI&39's dual-core chip is in RIM&39's PlayBook tablet. But Nvidia is in Motorola&39's highly-prized Xoom. (Credit:RIM)Here's the question that Uche Orji, an analyst at UBS Investment Bank, posed to TI executives Monday. "We've seen Nvidia Tegra 2 get very aggressive. We've heard comments about share gains within the tablet market. And that's been probably the one dual-core product from ARM that's shipping now in tablets that we know. So I just want to see now what makes you comfortable about OMAP 4 prospects in the light of all the competition we're seeing," he said. In response, Ron Slaymaker, vice president, TI investor relations, acknowledged that Nvidia has emerged as the early leader. "Nvidia, to their credit, was the first out with a dual-core applications processor. I believe they had a couple of months, maybe a quarter lead on our OMAP 4 product," Slaymaker said. He continued. "OMAP 4 began sampling fourth quarter a year ago. So we've had that product in customers' hands for over a year at this point. We're well along in development program. And again, them being first for customers that are trying to get out with tablet programs right away, especially some that are based upon the Android operating system, they're the player, they were the first player out so there is a natural alignment there." But all is not lost. TI is supplying the dual-core (OMAP 4) processor for RIM's upcoming PlayBook tablet. To be exact, that is an OMAP 4430 1GHz processor (see graphic above) with two ARM Cortex-A9 cores. And Slaymaker referenced other tablet designs that will use OMAP 4. "We are in volume production now with OMAP 4. And we're not just in production to put those products in inventories. In fact, we're shipping to a customer that plans to ramp their tablet production based on OMAP 4. So again, we've acknowledged for a long time the tablet market, as is the smartphone market, will be a competitive market. But I think you're going to find that translates to great opportunity for TI across a variety of product areas," he said.

0 Vote(s)

A laundry list of features new to Kaspersky debuts today in a new home security suite, Pure Total Security. Originally announced earlier this month atCES 2011, Kaspersky Pure Total Security takes the highly regarded set of features offered in Kaspersky Internet Security and mixes in some extras that are designed to appeal to people who have more complicated, multi-machine setups at home.Kaspersky Pure Internet Security(Credit:Kaspersky)Most notable among these new features is centralized home network security management. It allows users to control the security settings of the other computers within their home LAN that are also running Pure, and it will work remotely as long as the user is connected via VPN. Pure will let you run scans, configure security policies, run backups, and monitor parental controls for multiple machines from one computer.Pure also is the only Kaspersky home offering for North American residents that includes local backup management. The company took its preexisting Crypto-Storage product and integrated it with Pure, so that you can run and manage backups similarly to how Pure will let you handle security settings.Another new feature in Pure is the inclusion of password management from Lamantine's StickyPassword, which along with basic password-management controls has a portable option so you can export your encrypted passwords onto a USB stick and use that on any PC. Pure also comes with file encryption and shredding.Kaspersky has further plans for new products. In mid-March, the company hopes to release Kaspersky Small Office Security, which will include server support for up to 10 computers, and free tech support, and is qualified on MS servers Windows servers 2008 R2 and above. And like many competitors, the company plans in the next few months to add Android and BlackBerry support to its mobile security option that currently is only available for Symbian and Windows Phones.A one-year license for Kaspersky Pure Internet Security covers three computers, and retails for $89.95.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Screenshot by Jasmine France)As evidenced by the introduction of Unifi atCES 2011, there's a move to provide cloud storage services that focus specifically on media files. Of course, the problem one runs into with these types of files is that they tend to be a lot larger than things like documents, spreadsheets, and presentations--downright huge, in the case of video. A new software and service called Libox is aiming to tackle that problem.Like Unifi, Libox serves to aggregate your media files from various drives and devices (though at this time, it doesn't bring in content you may have stored with other services such as Facebook). The difference with Libox is that it doesn't actually upload your media files to the cloud. Instead, the service sniffs out the content stored on your computer, designated networked drives, and connected devices and creates a marker to their location. So it doesn't actually move or copy any files' rather, it offers a path through which you can access media. There are three ways to do this: via the desktop software, by logging on to the Web portal, or by using the corresponding mobile app (currently available for iOS only, but coming to Android in the near future). There are a few benefits to this method of media aggregation. For one, you don't have to wait through a lengthy uploading process. Although the initial scan will take some time--quite a bit if you have a ton of content--it's generally much quicker than uploading. Also, you don't have to select files for uploading because anything added to your computer or devices automatically shows up within the Libox interface. Finally, Libox is able to offer the service entirely for free, since there's no costly storage overhead on its end. And there are no ads for the user either (the company will generate revenue from partnerships rather than advertising).(Credit:Screenshot by Jasmine France)So far, it's looking like Libox is doing pretty good job delivering on its promise of media accessed anywhere easily and for free. I gave all three methods a spin, starting with the desktop software. Indeed, you will be required to download the program in order scan--and then keep an eye on--the media on your drives. However, the mobile app isn't a necessity in order for your media to be added to the overall container' you simply must connect the device once. Also, you can access Libox through the Web portal on non-iOS phones (that is, those that don't have their own apps yet). One thing I liked off the bat is the fact that the Widows software and the Web portal offer the same visually-appealing interface. Library navigation options are laid out clearly on the left, while large thumbnails dominate the main window. A nice touch with music is that Libox fills in some funky imagery for albums without cover art, so the whole space is a colorful mosaic. However, as much as the navigation looks good, it would be nice to have a way to browse content by a detailed list. Photos and music may be easy to navigate by thumbnail alone, but it's not ideal for video--as it stands, it's difficult to find the exact video you want to watch (although the search bar helps).Unsurprisingly, Libox also offers a social element. Although your aggregated library is only accessible by you, you can select individual files or even folders and albums to share. For now, the social aspect is limited to other Libox users, so you'll have to convince your friends to sign up, too. However, it wouldn't surprise me if the software offered some Facebook or Twitter integration in the future. As for the performance, there are some hiccups in certain cases. For one, Libox does not appear to recognize certain video types, particularly those with the AVI container. That said, this is a forgivable issue given the fact that Libox is doing extensive behind-the-scenes transcoding to get files to playback on all types of devices. Video formatting is particularly problematic, so the service gets some slack for now. Hopefully, this will be remedied in the near future.Another issue I ran into was with theiPhone app, which seems to be more of a beta than the other two portals. I manually selected some photos to be uploaded, since the process did not happen automatically, and the action continually caused to app to crash. Also, it takes forever for a video to load for playback on the device. Again, these are issues that I expect will be addressed going forward.Libox still has a few kinks to iron out before it hits a home run, but the service has the right idea. Obviously, if you're looking for something that actually backs up all of your media, Libox is not the answer. However, if the goal is to quickly and easily access and share your media from anywhere, it's worth giving this service a spin.

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's Larry Page (right) has plenty of work now that Google&39's ruling trio of Eric Schmidt (left) and Sergey Brin has changed.(Credit:Joi Ito/Flickr)Back in 2001, Larry Page wasn't ready to lead Google's 200 employees. Ten years later, with 24,400 employees, Page takes control of a much more complex operation, and both still have much to prove. Ready or not, it's Page's company now, following news that former CEO Eric Schmidt would be moving up and out of the way to assume a traveling statesman role as Google's public face. Page's longtime partner Sergey Brin will focus more on product and technology direction while Page assumes control of Google's overall strategy and financial performance, which is a similar working relationship the two enjoyed before Schmidt came on the scene. For all who levy the one-trick pony accusation at Google these days, back then that's exactly what is was. Now not only does Page have to make sure that Google stays atop the search world, he needs to figure out a way to make Google relevant in social media, oversee a burgeoning mobile software platform, nurture an enterprise-software sales and support group, and figure out a way to keep Google's best employees from departing for Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, and the other darlings of the start-up world. Oh, and the government is watching.Page is easily the shyest member of Google's Big Three, and with his elevation arguably becomes the most socially awkward CEO of any of the ruling powers of Silicon Valley. His performance on stage at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show was awkward even by geek standards, as Page's monotone delivery and handheld paper notes lulled the Vegas crowd to sleep. But he is not one to be underestimated' the engineer who created PageRank with a keen mind for strategic concerns and a sense of what people want from Google. For example, he bootstrapped the Google Street View project by driving around Palo Alto, Calif., with a video recorder hanging out the side of hiscar. He famously wrote in the letter accompanying Google's 2004 initial public offering that "Google is not a conventional company. Eric, Sergey and I intend to operate Google differently, applying the values it has developed as a private company to its future as a public company." Now that that ruling troika has changed, what's next for Page Perhaps the most immediate change is that Page now holds the legal responsibilities of a CEO, responsible for Google's financial statements and accountable to the demands of any legal actions in which Google is involved. Like most companies its size, that's quite a few, and staying on top of all those considerations will sap a lot of time from Page's schedule. The aforementioned 2004 letter was inspired by Warren Buffett's approach to management, and if Page adopts many of the Oracle of Omaha's tactics, he'll probably be all right. Yet while Google is far from broken as a financial and technical machine, Page's biggest challenge is the longer-term problems facing Google. As noted in our 2011 resolutions for Google, in addition to the social-media concerns, it needs to successfully confront government regulators and ramp up its game in consumer software to match the Apples of the world. If Schmidt is free to concentrate on Google's external opportunities and threats, Page and Brin can tag-team Google's strategic and execution problems when it comes to product development. Page also needs to figure out a way to make Google a more nimble decision-maker and more attractive place for those with entrepreneurial leanings. Google has experimented with alternative management structures that created autonomous teams, as it has did with the Google Wave team (perhaps not the best example from Google's point of view). However, there's just no getting around the fact that young, talented engineers looking to make a score before they settle down aren't as attracted to working for Google has they once were five years ago, when Google was the place to be. While life at Google has hardly turned into sweatshop labor, there are alternatives to its particular brand of engineering playgrounds filled with gourmet food and volleyball courts. Is Page merely a placeholder CEO, keeping the chair warm until another adult can be brought in to supervise It's certainly hard to imagine Google adding an external CEO at this point in its career, but an additional challenge for Page will now be succession planning and executive retention. For when the CEO is only 38, the experienced senior vice presidents who are invaluable when it comes to running the company can do the math and calculate whether their careers would be better served elsewhere. In any event, it's his company now. When Page wrote that 2004 letter, he envisioned working as one leg of a stool alongside Schmidt and Brin for a long time. While Schmidt isn't exactly leaving, he is putting an outsized amount of responsibility on the back of a brilliant engineer who hasn't run a company in 10 years. It's up to Page to prove that he's ready for the challenge of running one of America's most important and most targeted organizations. Google might wait a while before booking him on the Stephen Colbert show.See also:&149' Schmidt: 'Adult supervision' at Google no longer needed&149' CEO shake-up at Google: Page replaces Schmidt&149' Eric Schmidt's letter on stepping down as CEO

0 Vote(s)

I hope you're sitting down, because I have some information that might be earth-shattering for some of you. Others will give a collective "meh," and nobody would really blame you. But here it is: due to one scientist's offhanded comments, the Internet says you might no longer be the astrological sign you always thought you were. You see, the ancient Babylonians made up the first zodiac systems thousands of years ago, and astrologically minded people have been using the same systems, more or less unchanged, since then. The problem, though, is that the Earth's tilt on its axis has shifted significantly since then. If you remap the zodiac using Earth's current position, you get a different telling of who's an Aries, Leo, and so on--including a newish sign called Ophiuchus.Imagine it like this: If you spin something, the direction of the axis tends to wobble. The Earth's axis in its orbit does the same thing because of a phenomenon called precession, and is now facing a different star than it did 5,000 years ago. That means that the constellations that made up the Babylonian zodiac are not the constellations the sun currently passes through. So, according to many stories online today, a new zodiac could be devised. And that has believers in a frenzy. The sign of Ophiuchus, the new 13th zodiac. Sounds lucky, no(Credit:Wikipedia)The thing is, there is no actual new zodiac. The re-imagining of the tables with newer data is all academic, and today's hype on blogs and Twitter comes from an article published Sunday in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. In it, an astronomer with the cool name of Parke Kunkle said that due to the Earth axis' wobble, when the sun "...is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces."Of course, the Internet went predictably bonkers at the news, inflating what Kunkle said (and meant) into something he didn't (and didn't): that there's a new zodiac.Popular astrologer Susan Miller called the news "ridiculous." "We've known about this for ages," she told ABC News. "The constellations don't suggest what's coming up, it's the planets. The constellations are a measuring device." So don't worry, fellow Pisces, we're still Pisces. And the rest of you are the same, too.

0 Vote(s)

Apple is being sued for allegedly letting mobile apps on theiPhone andiPad send personal information to ad networks without the consent of users.Jonathan Lalo, who filed the lawsuit on Thursday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., alleges that Apple's iPhones and iPads let ad networks track which applications people download, how often they're used, and for how long, according to a Bloomberg article published today.Specifically, the suit alleges that the ad networks are able to trace an iPhone or iPad using the unique device identifier, or UDID, which is a number specific to each unit that can't be blocked by users. Claiming that sending personal data without consent violates federal computer fraud and privacy laws, the suit is seeking class action status on behalf of all Apple iPhone and iPad users who downloaded an app between December 1, 2008, and last week, according to Bloomberg.Privacy concerns over mobile data have heated up lately. Last week, a Wall Street Journal article asserted that mobile apps send certain information without the user's consent or knowledge. That article helped light a fire under the Mobile Marketing Association, an industry group that is now calling for new, more transparent privacy guidelines to tell consumers what information gets sent to advertisers and how it's used.Along with Apple, the lawsuit names as defendants certain mobile apps, such as Pandora, Paper Toss, Weather Channel, and Dictionary.com, Bloomberg reported. The Journal article had specifically mentioned Pandora, which it found was sending age, gender, and other personal information to ad networks, and Paper Toss, which the paper asserted was transmitting UDIDs.An Apple representative told CNET today that the company declines to comment on the suit.

0 Vote(s)

A Russian Soyuz rocket carrying three crew members bound for the International Space Station blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan today, kicking off a two-day flight to catch up and dock with the orbital lab complex. With Russian commander Dmitry "Dima" Kondratyev at the controls, the booster's first-stage engines roared to life on time and the rocket lifted off at 2:09:25 p.m. EST (1:09 a.m. Thursday local time), quickly climbing away from the same pad used by Yuri Gagarin at the dawn of the space age 50 years ago next April. The Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft lifts off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, bound for a Friday docking with the International Space Station.(Credit:NASA TV)Live television shots from inside the cabin showed Kondratyev in the capsule's center seat, flanked by Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli on his left and NASA astronaut Catherine "Cady" Coleman on his right. All three appeared relaxed and in good spirits as the rocket streaked toward space.Nine-and-a-half minutes later, the Soyuz TMA-20 capsule separated from the rocket's third stage and slipped into its planned preliminary orbit. Solar arrays and antennas deployed a few moments later and Russian flight controllers said the spacecraft was healthy and on course for a docking with the International Space Station around 3:12 p.m. Friday."Everything's good on our side. Congratulations on the successful orbital insertion," chief flight director Vladimir Solovyov radioed after engineers assessed telemetry. "Everything looks good, everything pressurized as it was supposed to, and the telemetry is nominal.""OK, thank you for your good wishes," Kondratyev replied.Nespoli, a European Space Agency astronaut who flew aboard the space shuttle in 2007, is serving as flight engineer for the trip to the station, assisted by Coleman, a mother and retired Air Force colonel who flew aboard the shuttle in 1995 and 1999 and holds a doctorate in polymer science and engineering. She celebrated her 50th birthday Tuesday."As the right-seater, I don't have as many duties (during launch) and so I have a chance to watch these two at work and it's fascinating to see them solve problems together, usually in Russian, some English. I'm not sure we ever actually know what language we speak together," Coleman said during a pre-launch photo opportunity at Baikonur."But we do those things together and like a family, a little bit like brothers and sisters. It's quite a feat and Dima is a supreme leader in that capsule. I think Paolo and I feel very privileged to fly with someone with such good skills. My mother is glad (he has) those skills as well!"The Soyuz TMA-20 crew (left to right): Catherine &34'Cady&34' Coleman, Dmitry Kondratyev, and Paolo Nespoli.(Credit:NASA)Kondratyev will oversee an automated docking with the space station's Rassvet mini-research module Friday afternoon. Waiting to welcome them aboard will be Expedition 26 commander Scott Kelly, Alexander Kaleri, and Oleg Skripochka, who were launched to the station October 7."As soon as they get on board, my primary goal is to get them acclimated to the environment and get them comfortable enough to where they can work up here efficiently," Kelly told a reporter. "One of the first things we do is a safety briefing, make sure they're aware and reminded of all the safety training they've had, but see it from the perspective of being on board here. Really, just to get them comfortable and ready to work starting the following Monday."The six-member Expedition 26 crew faces a busy timeline that includes research, normal maintenance, two Russian-segment spacewalks, and work to unload a variety of supply ships. A Japanese HTV cargo craft is scheduled to arrive in late January, followed by a Russian Progress supply ship, the shuttle Discovery in early February, and a European Automated Transfer Vehicle, or ATV, at the end of the month that will deliver another load of supplies and equipment. The shuttle Endeavour is scheduled to show up in early April along with another Progress later that month."There's a lot on our plate," Kelly said. "A lot of it is logistics, with these cargo vehicles coming up and preparing the space station for its future beyond shuttle and all the science, not only the science that we conduct now but the science we'll be able to conduct here for the next 10 years aboard the International Space Station."Along with the government-sponsored supply ships and crew rotation flights, Coleman, Nespoli, and Kondratyev also may get a chance to oversee the first visit by a commercial cargo craft, the Dragon capsule developed by SpaceX. The company carried out a successful test flight earlier this month and is pushing to combine the next two test flights into a single mission that would deliver supplies to the station next spring or summer."We will be very prepared if they decide to make that a docking mission," Coleman said. "Paolo and I have been training extensively for both the Dragon and the HTV, the Japanese supply vehicle. Both get captured by the robotic arm. They're different vehicles, but the principle is the same for our duties so we are, indeed, prepared for that."Kelly, Kaleri, and Skripochka are scheduled to return to Earth in the Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft on March 16, leaving Kondratyev, Coleman, and Nespoli behind as the core members of the Expedition 27 crew. They will be joined on April 1 by Alexander Samokutyaev, Andrei Borisenko, and Ronald Garan, scheduled for launch March 30 aboard the Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft.Kondratyev, Nespoli, and Coleman are scheduled to return to Earth May 16.

0 Vote(s)

Visitors to such sites as Torrent-finder.com, 2009jerseys.com, and Dvdcollects.com found that their usual sites had been replaced by a message that said, "This domain name has been seized by ICE--Homeland Security Investigations, pursuant to a seizure warrant issued by a United States District Court.""My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!" the owner of Torrent-Finder told TorrentFreak, which listed more than 70 domains that were apparently part of the massive seizure.DHS representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The seizures came after a Senate committee unanimously approved a controversial proposal earlier this month that would allow the government to pull the plug on Web sites accused of aiding piracy. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) allows a Web site's domain to be seized if it "has no demonstrable, commercially significant purpose or use other than" offering or providing access to unauthorized copies of copyrighted works. The proposal has garnered support from dozens of the largest content companies, including video game maker Activision, media firms NBC Universal and Viacom, and the Motion Picture Association of America and Recording Industry Association of America lobbying groups. However, critics such as engineers and civil liberties groups say the COICA could balkanize the Internet, jeopardize free speech rights, and endanger legitimate Web sites. The battle against online file sharing has ramped up. Earlier today, a Swedish court upheld the copyright conviction of the founders of The Pirate Bay, a notorious file-sharing site. In October, a U.S. district judge issued an injunction against Lime Wire, the company that operated the popular file-sharing software LimeWire. In May, a judge granted summary judgment in favor of the music industry's claims that Lime Group, parent of LimeWire software maker Lime Wire, committed copyright infringement, engaged in unfair competition, and induced copyright infringement.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Bing)Those of you planning to catch a film this holiday weekend may want to check out the latest changes at Bing Movies. The search engine's movie site has updated its lineup with some new features to help you decide what you want to see.Users can now more easily see all the local theaters showing a particular picture rather than bouncing from one venue's site to another. Just search for or click on a title like the latest Harry Potter movie, and Bing lists all the theaters in your area where it's playing along with their showtimes and driving distances.A new trailers page provides a host of clips, previews, and interviews on new movies. You can watch each video full screen and share it with other people via Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.Bing now combines a variety of reviews on each film from both the critics and other users, giving you one page where you can decide if the movie is worth your hard-earned dough. Finally, the Bing Movie home page ties all the new features together nicely, providing a single spot where you can view trailers, read a synopsis, and check out local show times.Bing's revamped movie page is now similar to the one offered by Google. Searching for a movie at Google also shows you local show times, links to reviews, and a video of the movie's trailer all in one spot. But Bing offers a greater variety and number of reviews and a wider selection of trailers and other clips.

0 Vote(s)

The Nokia N8, a Symbian smartphone(Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)The first updates to current Symbian phones will appear in the first half of next year, Nokia said today. At the Symbian Exchange and Exposition in Amsterdam, the handset manufacturer--which said yesterday that it was bringing development of Symbian back in-house--said the first updates would include the addition of split-screen text entry, a Qwerty keyboard that works when the phone is in portrait mode, integrated Swype input, and a new browser.New Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop revealed in October that there would no longer be a sharp break between Symbian^3--the version found in handsets including the N8 and C7--and what was to be the upcoming Symbian^4. Instead, Symbian^4 has been scrapped and features that were due to be released in that version will be gradually added to the current handset range, so as to improve the user experience.See also: "Nokia: We will define 'open' for Symbian" Read more of "Nokia times first Symbian updates for 'early 2011'" at ZDNet UK.

0 Vote(s)

Google has begun work on a feature to let Chrome load pages before they're needed, the latest instance of the company's relentless focus on Web performance. The work, described briefly in the Chrome issue tracker, said the project to "pre-load pages in background tabs for 'wicked fast' page loads" is scheduled to arrive in the browser's code base in February. The very early stages of work has begun: support for an eventual option to enable testing the feature through Chrome's "about:flags" interface. With Chrome's tabbed browsing interface, multiple pages can be loaded into separate memory compartments simultaneously. A background tab, presumably, is one that's in use but hidden from the user interface. When a person clicks on a preloaded Web page, the browser could simply activate the page rather than load it.One tricky part of the technology is of course deciding which pages, or fractions of pages, to preload and when to purge unread pages from memory. Some Web pages have dozens of links, and some browser users have dozens of active tabs open.Another complication: artificial inflation of page-view statistics on the Web. Analytics tools will have to be able to distinguish between a "real" page view and a preload. A related analytics complication is registering when a preloaded page is activated. AppleSafari's 3D interface for showing a thumbnail array of recently used Web pages brought similar complications.Through a process called DNS prefetching, Chrome already tackles some potentially slow networking chores before Web pages are clicked. And Google has many other fast-Web projects under way, including a technology called False Start to speed encrypted Web pages, rewiring Web server communications with the SPDY protocol, support for the WebP image format as an alternative to JPEG, and switching to the libjpeg-turbo library for when JPEG images need to be drawn.

0 Vote(s)

I have never been a Nicaraguan general, but I imagine that the job has its fun parts. So one might just put it down to naive enthusiasm that Eden Pastora--such an idyllically peaceful name for a general--might have accidentally wandered with his troops into territory that would seem to be owned by its neighbor, Costa Rica. And yet, no. General Pastora doesn't blame general euphoria. No, he blames Google Maps. The dispute that has ensued over Google's version of the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border has become rather serious. So much so that the secretary general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, is flying to the area to help ensure that a cartographic mess involving Google doesn't become a graphic mess involving dead bodies. The Google Maps tale, originally offered by Search Engine Land, reads almost like a scene from the wonderful 2001 movie "No Man's Land." You see, Costa Rica and Nicaragua aren't necessarily in agreement about who owns the areas near the San Juan River. But the Costa Ricans claim that both countries are in possession of maps that delineate a currently tolerated border, which was allegedly agreed in treaties as long ago as 1858 and 1888.In the interests of peace, here is a lovely picture from San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. At least I think it&39's Nicaragua.(Credit:CC Thombo2/Flickr)The Costa Rican paper La Nacion quoted General Pastora as saying the Google Maps version showed that his area of encampment was on Nicaraguan soil. "Esta clarito," he declared.Costa Rican experts who spoke to La Nacion seemed, surprisingly, in agreement that Google's version was erroneous, while Bing Maps' was correct. The paper also quoted Nicaragua's ambassador to the Organization of American States as saying the local maps can be confusing. However, Laura Chinchilla, Costa Rica's first female president, who must feel slightly perturbed, as her nation doesn't have what might officially described as a permanent army, is not happy. She reportedly declared on national TV: "The Armed Forces of Nicaragua crossed the border and remain until this day on Costa Rican territory on the Island of Calero, in the province of Limon. There they set up military encampments, raised the Nicaraguan flag."Google was accused earlier this year of showing a radically misleading version of the border between Cambodia and Thailand. And CNN says the company is looking into the Nicaragua-Costa Rica issue.Given that Google Maps do occasionally lead people up garden paths and even highways, it is hard to imagine that fine generals rely on the service, especially in sensitive areas.Who would be surprised, therefore, if General Pastora might have been attempting to attain a certain heroic status by conquering a little pastoral foreign land And who would be surprised to hear that the Nicaraguans have requested that the Google Maps version stays as it isI would have suggested that the two sides play a game of soccer to settle this little fracas. And then I remembered that Central America hasn't always been politically lucky, where soccer is concerned. In 1969, Nicaragua's near neighbors, El Salvador and Honduras, got into a war that was somewhat inspired by a soccer game between the two countries. So one can only wish Jose Miguel Insulza--and Google--luck. Insulza, at least, may not need it. He is a Chilean politician, whose nickname is, um, El Panzer.

0 Vote(s)

Is this the Droid Incredible HD(Credit:Boy Genius Report)Back in August, the Boy Genius Report posted the first images of what was said to be an Evo 4G-like device destined for Verizon. Described as polished and being at the "very upper-end of the market," the images of the phone revealed a sleek handset with a 4.3-inch touch screen, an 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, and a front-facing camera. But just as quickly as the phone came onto our radar, it went away. Now, however, it's back on our scope after an administrator on Droid Forums tapped the phone with the name of Droid Incredible HD and a November 23 release date. The source of the info, Miami1683, says he has personally held the device and will have pictures for everyone next week. Though we've seen plenty of leaked Verizon news over the last few weeks, and even a roadmap or two, we haven't seen any hint of a Droid Incredible followup. So why would we believe Miami1683 Simply put, he has a proven track record. He was the first person to predict the release of the Droid Incredible early in the year. The hardware of the supposed Droid Incredible HD matches up with the Evo 4G, but it likely has more in common with HTC's new Desire HD. Filling in the gaps, we might also expect 768MB of RAM, Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual surround sound, and a kickstand. It's very possible that it will run Android 2.2 and carry the new version of HTC Sense, adding weight to the successor rumor. As many of you know, the first Droid Incredible also ran the custom user interface.Regardless of what name this phone ends up with, I'm sure this will sell fairly well with Verizon. The nation's largest carrier has yet to offer a phone with a front-facing camera, so that feature alone should find an audience. Releasing this during the prime shopping season when many customers come up for contract renewal won't hurts either. With many of the Android handsets favoring Motorola over the last few months, it will be a nice change of pace to see a big HTC announcement.

0 Vote(s)

It also announced in May it had raised $150 million in equity financing from investors that included Alstrom, Draper Fisher Jurveston, Morgan Stanley and VantagePoint. The company is perennially bandied around as an IPO candidate, with a couple of folks betting that this will be the year.BrightSource has been flying high on a few successes, last year landing a $1.37 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy for its Ivanpah project, a 392-megawatt solar project that could generate enough energy to power up to 140,000 homes. The project is currently underway and uses BrightSource&'s solar thermal technology, which involves using a field of mirrors in the Mojave Desert to reflect sunlight onto a point on &''power towers&'' that contain liquid that can be heated to generate the steam that turns electrical turbines (pictured).Power plant company NRG Energy has pledged to invest $300 million over the next three years in the Ivanpah project.
If Pablo Picasso or Belgian surrealist, Ren Magritte, were alive and on Facebook, their profiles would probably be a terrific work of art. Yes, that&'s right, Magritte is the one who did this painting. With a little inspiration from the Treachery of Images, I bet he&'d also write something along the lines of &''This is not a Facebook profile&'' or &''Ceci n&'est pas un profil Facebook&'' somewhere on his Facebook page.Yet, while Picasso and Magritte may not be around to wow us with a little contemporary Facebook art, the profile of French artista4sAlexandre Oudin is probably the next best thing. The Co-Director of La Bande Originale managed to maximize the new Facebook design released officially last week in order to express himself in a rather innovative and original way. While Facebook&'s simple blue and white layout is sometimes a little less funky than what one could find on other social platforms, like MySpace&'s over-the-top personalization options and whatnot, Oudin has clearly demonstrated that there are still creative ways to express yourself on Facebook.I wouldn&'t be surprised if his unique way of using notably the 5 images now displayed on the top of a profile page becomes a hit with other users or sets off a wave of other innovative profile picture displays. For anyone who wants to copy his style, all you have to do is block the other photos you&'re tagged in and upload photos to your profile pictures album that are the exact size (yes, down to the pixel) of the display on Facebook and voil !Check out some more cool, Alexandre Oudin-like designs featured on TechCrunch France. If anyone else out there has an artsy profile going on, feel free to send it my way.*Thanks to Moop Design for the tip !

0 Vote(s)
