Two Michigan women are suing Google over location data collected by Android devices, a week after Apple was named in a lawsuit citing privacy violations with theiPhone logging similar data. The $50 million lawsuit against Google seeks to stop Google from selling phones with software that can track a user's location, the Detroit News reported today. The lawsuit was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Detroit on behalf of plaintiffs Julie Brown and Kayla Molaski, who are seeking class action status for the suit. Their lawyer, Steven Budaj, argues in the complaint that the tracking of Android owners' location "puts users at serious risk of privacy invasions, including stalking."Google acknowledged last week that it collects location information--including GPS current location, timestamps, nearby Wi-Fi network addresses, and device IDs--from Android devices but said it was not traceable to a specific individual. Users can disable the GPS feature, but then they won't get as much function out of maps and other location-based services. Google representatives declined to comment on the lawsuit. The lawsuit against Apple filed in Florida last week also seeks class action status and accuses Apple of violating privacy laws, as well as the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act by keeping a log of user locations without offering users a way to disable that. The matter first came to light last week when two researchers said they had discovered that the iPhone collects and logs current and historical location information without user permission or warning, and stores it unencrypted on the device. In addition to the lawsuits, the controversy has prompted lawmakers to seek an FTC probe of the issue and questions from attorneys general in Connecticut and Illinois. After a week of silence, Apple finally spoke up about the matter, explaining in an FAQ that it was collecting the data to get more accurate location data for eventual use in a traffic database and blamed a software bug for storing an excess amount of it on the devices.

0 Vote(s)

The Federal Communications Commission has formally started the process for reviewing the proposed $39 billion merger between AT&T and T-Mobile USA that was announced last month. The FCC has posted its public notice that establishes procedural rules for the review process and will allow the public to weigh in on the proposed merger. AT&T and T-Mobile will file their formal applications by the end of the month as the FCC considers transferring wireless licenses. The agency is still not discussing specifics of the review process, but earlier today it held a press conference in which it explained broadly how the agency will evaluate the deal. Specifically, the FCC will do two things. First it has to determine if the deal will meet specific requirements in the Communications Act and FCC rules. And second it will determine if the merger is in the public interest. The agency will work in conjunction with the Department of Justice, which will be evaluating the merger to ensure it doesn't violate antitrust laws. For the FCC its "public interest" evaluation will include things such as how the merger will affect competition. This is broader than the standard antitrust review and will consider whether the deal will encourage the deployment of new services. The FCC will use a test called the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) to measure concentration in a particular market. The commission will also evaluate spectrum coverage, and it will look at how much spectrum is available in certain markets for mobile services. It will evaluate what percentage of that spectrum is held by AT&T and T-Mobile.Related links&149' AT&T to acquire T-Mobile USA for $39 billion&149' Sprint to fight AT&T's bid for T-Mobile&149' T-Mobile undercuts rivals on 'unlimited' planAT&T has argued that the T-Mobile spectrum will help it keep up with growing demand for wireless data services. The company plans to use T-Mobile's AWS spectrum acquired in 2006 for its 4G LTE network. AT&T will also use spectrum it acquired in the 2008 700MHz auction for this network as well. Specifically, AT&T says that the T-Mobile spectrum will help the company alleviate congestion in already crowded markets such as New York City.In a Q&A with The Washington Post recently, AT&T executive Jim Cicconi said that "without additional spectrum, by the fall of next year, we will be significantly constrained in New York City and elsewhere."But consumer groups argue that AT&T has plenty of unused spectrum. They also say that if the deal is approved, that pricing will go up. T-Mobile is considered a low-cost provider of wireless service. In fact, yesterday the company announced an "unlimited" calling, texting, and data usage plan--which is in fact limited to 2GB of data per month--for $80 per month. This is $20 less per month less than Sprint, its closest competitor. Meanwhile, a comparable plan from AT&T, which also limits data to 2GB and charges customers if they go over that limit, is $115 a month. To help ensure the public interest, the FCC may require certain conditions for the approval of the merger. The agency imposed conditions on the Verizon-Alltel merger and the merger between Comcast and NBC Universal. While those conditions are supposed to help the deal meet public-interest goals, they do expire after a certain period of time. Some of these conditions may require AT&T to adhere to certain Net neutrality regulations, as was the case in the Comcast-NBCU merger, or it may require the company to divest some of its spectrum and customers in certain markets, like the agency required in the Verizon-Alltel deal.If the FCC finds that the deal is not in the public interest, a hearing will be held before an administrative judge. The FCC hasn't outlined a specific timetable for reviewing the merger. But the general rule of thumb is that the agency tries to complete its process within 180 days. But most experts believe the merger will take anywhere between a year and 18 months. The time clock on the merger begins after AT&T and T-Mobile have filed their applications.Consumer groups and Sprint Nextel, the third-largest wireless operator in the country, oppose the deal and want regulators to block the deal. Congress is expected to weigh in on the debate as well. There is a hearing scheduled for May 11 before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

0 Vote(s)

Google Docs lets you address particular comments to people. They&39're notified of comments by e-mail, and responses sent by e-mail appear in the discussion thread.(Credit:Google)The ideas behind Google Wave, a real-time communication technology the Net giant ditched, are making something of a comeback as a collaboration tool in Google Docs and Gmail.Google announced discussions in Google Docs today, a new ability to automate the communications part of collaborations. Google Docs already let multiple people edit a document at the same time and to append comments to a document, but the discussions feature advances those abilities.(Credit:Google)For one thing, comments now can be hidden once they've been addressed, not just deleted, and they can be resurrected if necessary. For another, comments are adorned with the commenter's photo, and they can be addressed to specific people. Such a comment automatically generates an e-mail to the person, who can open the document with a link in the e-mail. Simply replying to that e-mail will insert the response to the comment in the document itself.Wave users will recognize some of its features in these changes. Wave was a hybrid of e-mail, instant messaging, and group chat rooms. Though it ultimately failed at Google, the idea of collaboration--with both store-and-forward and real-time communications--has a lot to recommend it."Now you can easily tell who made a comment and when--with timestamps and profile pictures--and you can keep track of the conversation with e-mail notifications and reply to comments directly from your e-mail," said Scott Johnston, Google's group product manager for Google Docs, in a blog post. For details about how it all works, check the Google Docs blog post.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.--Enduring the heat of re-entry one last time, the shuttle Discovery dropped out of orbit and returned to Earth today to wrap up a near-flawless 39th and final mission, marking the beginning of the end for NASA's winged rocket ships. After firing its twin braking rockets for a computer-controlled descent halfway around the planet, commander Steven Lindsey took over manual control and guided Discovery through a 250-degree left turn to line up on runway 15.Pilot Eric Boe then deployed the ship's landing gear and the 204,000-pound shuttle swooped to a tire-smoking touchdown on runway 15 at 11:57:17 a.m. EST.The shuttle Discovery settles to a smooth touchdown at the Kennedy Space Center to close out its 39th and final flight.(Credit:NASA)Lindsey had no problems with a stiff 25-knot headwind, and a few moments later, NASA's oldest surviving space shuttle rolled to a halt, wrapping up a career spanning some 5,750 orbits, 148 million miles, and 365 days in space during 39 missions since its maiden launch in August 1984."And Houston, Discovery, for the final time, wheels stopped," Lindsey radioed flight controllers in Houston."Discovery, Houston, great job by you and your crew," replied astronaut Charles Hobaugh in mission control. "That was a great landing in tough conditions and it was an awesome docked mission you all had...So job well done."With only two more missions left on NASA's shuttle manifest--a flight by Endeavour in April and a final voyage by Atlantis in late June--Discovery's landing marked the beginning of the end for the world's most complex and expensive to operate manned rocket."We're seeing a program come to a close here and to see these shuttles, these beautiful, magnificent flying machines end their service life is obviously a little bit sad for us," astronaut Michael Barratt said earlier this week."But it is about time, they've lived a very long time, they've had a fabulous success record, they've built this magnificent space station, they've given us lots of science and a tremendous amount of experience of just how to operate in space. More than anything, we look forward to seeing them retire with dignity and bringing on the next line of spaceships."Discovery races down runway 15, rolling out on its final landing at the Kennedy Space Center.(Credit:NASA/Bill Ingalls)Lindsey, Boe, Barratt and their crewmates--Nicole Stott and spacewalkers Stephen Bowen and Alvin Drew--were welcomed home by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and scores of other agency managers and engineers who turned out for Discovery's final homecoming."This is a pretty bittersweet moment for all of us," Lindsey said on the runway. "As the minutes pass, I'm getting sadder and sadder about this being the last flight. And I know all the folks involved in the shuttle program feel the same way."Lindsey thanked Discovery's processing team at the Kennedy Space Center for "giving us just a fantastic vehicle to fly. It was a privilege to be in charge of her for just a couple of weeks and I'm sad to give her back. But I couldn't imagine giving her back into better hands than this group right here."Over the course of an extended 13-day mission, Lindsey and his crewmates attached a final U.S. module to the International Space Station, delivered a spare set of radiator panels and an external stowage platform, and transferred several tons of supplies and equipment to the lab complex.Bowen and Drew also staged two spacewalks to accomplish a variety of long-planned maintenance tasks. And the astronauts helped their station colleagues service a U.S. oxygen generator and a carbon dioxide removal system. With Discovery safely back on Earth, engineers in the nearby Vehicle Assembly Building made final preparations to haul the shuttle Endeavour to launch pad 39A tomorrow for work to ready the ship for its 25th and final launch April 19.If all goes well, NASA will close out the shuttle program by launching the Atlantis June 28 on a final space station resupply mission.Discovery is towed back to its processing hangar for decommissioning.(Credit:NASA TV)Discovery's landing brought that long-awaited--and to some, long-dreaded--end game into sharp focus. Barratt captured the thoughts of many space workers when he reflected on the shuttle program's legacy from orbit."I think about this space shuttle fleet like the clipper ships that were strong and fast and powerful, they did their jobs but they were also graceful and beautiful," he said. "They conjured up imagination, of foreign travel, exotic places, of exploration. And Discovery is just an elite member of this elite fleet."We have the legacy of the clippers in our shuttle fleet and it's a legacy that everybody who's ever touched these vehicles should be extremely proud of. I think the only problem area there is we don't have that follow on, we're not replacing the shuttle with something and I think that's what makes it a little bit sad for us."At the same time, he said, "it is a time to celebrate.""The legacy this spaceship has made for herself is just nothing more than cause for celebration. She's returned so much science, so much experience, and the experience that we as crew members have had has just been marvelous and, again, something our country should be very, very proud of."Over the next few months, Discovery will be decommissioned and ultimately turned into a museum display.NASA has not yet announced where the orbiters will end up, but it's widely expected that one of them will be displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.NASA's space shuttle Discovery takes last flight (photos)

0 Vote(s)

The number of infected Web sites tracked by Dasient has doubled in the past year to more than one million. (Credit:Dasient)More than 1 million Web sites were believed to be infected with malware in the fourth quarter of last year, nearly double from the previous year, according to figures released today by Dasient. Malvertising, advertising containing malware, also is on the rise, with impressions doubling to 3 million per day from the third quarter of 2010, Dasient said in a blog post. "The probability that an average Internet user will hit an infected page after three months of Web browsing is 95 percent," the company said. The news corresponds with information released this week by another security firm. An analysis of than 3,000 Web sites across 400 organizations last year found that 44 percent of them had serious vulnerabilities at all times, while 24 percent were frequently vulnerable for an average of at least 270 days a year, according to WhiteHat Security, which provides Web site testing and security services for companies. Meanwhile, only 16 percent of the sites examined were found to be rarely vulnerable, the report said. About 64 percent of those sites had at least one information leakage vulnerability, which inched past Cross-site scripting as the most prevalent vulnerability, WhiteHat said. Neither WhiteHat nor Dasient identified the Web sites they analyzed or disclosed whether any of the biggest Web brands were among those with malware or vulnerabilities. Dasient researchers wanted to see how easy it would be to spread malware on social-networking sites and created some test accounts to spread various types of links. More than 80 percent of the dozen unidentified sites it tested allowed through links that were on Google's Safe Browsing list, while all of them allowed through links that led to a benign drive-by download. In another test, the researchers posted an ad whose click-through links led to a benign drive-by download and found that the social-networking site kept the ad up for more than three weeks before pulling it. The ad had the headline "Click for a security test," led to a site at "hackerhome.org," and said a Windows calculator would pop up if the computer was vulnerable.

0 Vote(s)

We all know that any single tweet has a much better than average chance of containing total nonsense, and that any individual Twitter user's Oscar predictions aren't worth their weight in ones and zeroes. But if you aggregate tens of thousands of users' guesses, you end up with what could be called The Wisdom of the Twitterverse, and in this case, the crowd has spoken: "The King's Speech" will win Best Picture in a runaway.Based on tens of thousands of tweets, Tweetbeat expects 'The King's Speech' to be the runaway Best Picture Oscar winner.(Credit:Tweetbeat)Since the announcement of the Academy Award nominations last month, a service called Tweetbeat has been collecting each and every Oscar-related tweet, and today it released its conclusions. With well more than 25,000 votes, if you can call them that, "The King's Speech" emerged as the clear winner, with the support of 31.4 percent. Next up was "The Social Network," with 13.7 percent, "Black Swan," with 10.9 percent, "Inception," with 10.6 percent, and "True Grit," with 8.1 percent. The five other Best Picture nominees, "The Fighter," "127 Days," "Toy Story 3," "Winter's Bone," and "The Kids are Alright" all had less than 8 percent. In the Best Actress category, Natalie Portman was an even bigger favorite than "The King's Speech." The "Black Swan" actress garnered support from 54.5 percent of tweeters, while runner-up Nicole Kidman got 16.7 percent, Annette Bening got 11 percent, Jennifer Lawrence got 10.6 percent, and Michelle Williams came in last at 7.3 percent.Among the men, Colin Firth, the king in "The King's Speech," did even better than Portman, raking in 56.4 percent of the "vote," while Jesse Eisenberg was the favorite of 14.1 percent, and James Franco, Javier Bardem, and Jeff Bridges rounded out the field with 12.3 percent, 10.6 percent, and 6.5 percent, respectively. To be sure, these are entirely unscientific numbers, so please don't bet your kid's college fund based on them. But when you're talking about the collective impressions of many tens of thousands of people, it's hard to imagine Tweetbeat's predictions being off base. I, for one, think "The King's Speech" is a shoo-in to win, and that Firth certainly deserves the Oscar for his role as King George VI. I haven't seen "Black Swan," so I can't weigh in on Portman's performance.Regardless, this is an interesting way to arrive at wisdom of the crowds-type predictions, and it will be very interesting to see if Tweetbeat has it right. If so, I'll be very, very interested to see what the Twitterverse has to say about the 2012 presidential election.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)Adobe may be leaving the flashy announcements to Nokia and Sony Ericsson this Mobile World Congress, but there are some plans pertaining to Flash that will impact a wide swatch of Android smartphones andtablets going forward.Adobe shared mostly statistics in a press event before the show, but bobbing in the sea of performance numbers (like: over 20 million Android Flash downloads in first six months) were some nuggets of information that spell out Adobe's commitment to help fuel the high-speed Android train. (Don't worry, BlackBerry fans. There's news for you, too.)Flash Player 10.2Adobe says it will release a mobile-compatible version of Flash Player 10.2 for Android 3.0 Honeycomb and BlackBerry Tablet OS. The updated version is touted to vastly reduce the a device's CPU usage and battery drain by letting the phone's hardware rather than software decode and render video. The company has tested Flash Player 10.2 on the Motorola Xoom, on netbooks, and on "other pre-release products," Adobe said' likely the BlackBerry PlayBook. Compatibility issues will apparently keep Flash 10.2 off other Android OSes for the time being, and there's no road map except the promise that Flash Player 10.2 "will come to the first devices in the next few weeks" on smartphones and tablets, and then ship on other devices. We're still trying to discern the smartphone end of Adobe's distribution claim. So far all its certified smartphones are Android 2.2 or older, which would make them ineligible for the new Flash Player by Adobe's own terms.WebM videoIn addition to releasing the current Flash Player, Adobe also told journalists that they are "committed" to building support for Google's WebM codec into Flash, although it's not announcing a timeline. Adobe did say it's working with Google to support WebM, giving developers the ability to choose between WebM or H.264, both high-definition video codecs.WebM, which comprises the VP8 video codec plus the Vorbis audio codec, was initially not included in Adobe's plans. Previously Adobe said they'd only support the VP8 video standard.Digital editionsAdobe will continue to encourage developers to use its desktop-based Creative Suite apps to package content like magazines for mobile devices. There are currently over 100 such apps for theiPhone andiPad, and support for developers to create digital editions for Android is coming next. 2011 projections Over 132 million smarpthones will support Flash, 36 percent of smartphones will ship with it, and more than 50 tablets will ship with Flash Player either enabled or installed--including WebOS, BlackBerry Tablet OS, and Android platforms.
Federal authorities are investigating repeated intrusions into the computer network that runs the Nasdaq stock exchange, according to a Wall Street Journal report that cited people familiar with the matter. The intrusions did not compromise the tech-heavy exchange's trading platform, which executes investors' trades, but it was unknown which other sections of the network were accessed, according to the report."So far, [the perpetrators] appear to have just been looking around," one person involved in the Nasdaq matter told the Journal. The Secret Service reportedly initiated an investigation involving New York-based Nasdaq OMX Group last year, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations has launched a probe as well. Investigators are considering a range of motives for the breach, including national security threat, personal financial gain, and theft of trade secrets, the newspaper reported.Nasdaq representatives could not be reached for comment. Investigators have not been able to follow the intruders' path to any specific individual or country, but people familiar with the matter say some evidence points to Russia, according to the report. However, they caution that hackers may just be using Russia as a conduit for their activities. In 1999, a hacker group called "United Loan Gunmen" defaced Nasdaq's public Web site with a story headlined "United Loan Gunmen take control of Nasdaq stock market." The vandalism was quickly erased, and Nasdaq officials said at the time that the exchange's internal network was unaffected.

0 Vote(s)

Intuit&39's SnapTax app(Credit:Intuit)Intuit's SnapTax app for Apple'siPhone and Android-based smartphones has been downloaded 350,000 times since its launch last month, Intuit executives have told All Things Digital. All Things Digital's Ina Fried reported today that so far, it has seen more than twice as many downloads on the iPhone than on Android-based devices.SnapTax is designed for simple tax returns that include little more than a W-2 wage statement. After downloading the free app, users need only to snap a picture of their W-2 from their smartphone, and the program will automatically input that information into the user's return. The data is also encrypted to ensure it's kept secure from others. After inputting their personal information and reviewing the return, users can then file it with the Internal Revenue Service for $14.99.Actually paying that fee is somewhat difficult on an Android smartphone. Users must first download the free version of the program and then when they're ready to file, they have to dole out the $14.99 for the paid version of the app. The iPhone offering requires users to pay through an in-app payment system.Even with 350,000 downloads, there's no telling if all those people will actually file their taxes with the app. In fact, Intuit told All Things Digital that it was "surprised" that people would want to file their taxes with a smartphone, given that sensitive data is included in returns. But after performing its research, the company found that younger taxpayers aren't especially worried about that. For those with security concerns or with more sophisticated returns, hiring a tax preparer or using a software program is still the go-to way to pay Uncle Sam.

0 Vote(s)

Google is recruiting developers to work in-house on mobile apps for its Android operating system, a report says, as the tech giant continues its challenge to Apple's iOS and the popular devices that run on it.Benjamin Ling, a Google product-management director, has been supervising an attempt to coax software engineers, user-interface specialists, and product managers into the Google fold, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. The Journal added that some current Google workers have shifted their positions at the company to join the app project, which will be spread across Google's global offices and cover everything from Angry Birds-like games to Foursquare-like check-in apps. The resulting apps will probably be free, with ads included to generate revenue, the Journal said. The mobile battle has been heating up for Google and cross-Valley rival Apple. Google has been breathing down Apple's neck in the smartphone market, and some saytablets such as Motorola's Xoom, which run on Google's "Honeycomb" OS for tablets, might well give the wildly populariPad a run for the money.Apple, meanwhile, is finally offering up the iPhone on Verizon, and has a healthy lead when it comes to apps. More than 350,000 paid and freeiPhone and iPad apps are available in Apple's App Store, and more than 10 billion have already been downloaded since the store's launch in July 2008. It's a general industry rule of thumb that the more apps available for a given device, the more potential buyers that device can attract.Google's Android Market currently features less than 130,000 apps, but its stable of offerings reportedly grew more than 500 percent last year, compared with Apple's App Store, which saw offerings rise by about 110 percent. Developers, it seems, are warming up to Android. And apart from company rivalries and struggles between devices, the market for mobile apps is nothing to sneeze at. Gartner recently predicted that such apps will generate $15 billion in revenue this year, with downloads more than doubling, to 17.2 billion from 2010's 8.2 billion.

0 Vote(s)

Apple shares slide on news of Steve Jobs&39' medical leave of absence.(Credit:Screenshot by Don Reisinger/CNET)Apple's shares are trading lower this morning as investors start to come to grips with the news of Steve Jobs taking his second medical leave of absence in two years. An hour and a half into morning activity on the Nasdaq exchange, Apple shares were down approximately $13 to just over $335 per share, representing a nearly 4 percent slide.Apple released word of Jobs' medical leave early yesterday on the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., meaning that the stock market was closed. That extra day to process the news likely softened the reaction on Wall Street over worries about how Apple will fare in the day-to-day absence of its CEO, a pancreatic cancer survivor. The reaction also may be tempered by expectation of more favorable news later today when Apple is scheduled to announce its fiscal first-quarter earnings, which includes the holiday sales period. Financial analysts are expecting a strong showing, with average forecast for revenue coming in at $24.38 billion and earnings per share at $5.38.Apple gave no date for Jobs' return, but said that Jobs would continue to have a say in strategic decisions. In his absence, day-to-day operations will be handled by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who also filled in during Jobs' 2009 medical leave.

0 Vote(s)

Device attaches to windshield and connects to car&39's electrical system(Credit:Inthinc)A 2009 study (PDF) from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that truck drivers who were texting were 23 times more at risk of a "crash or near crash event" than "nondistracted driving." As reported by CNET's Jennifer Guevin, the study also found that "texting took a driver's focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds--enough time...to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph." Teenage drivers are especially vulnerable. In addition to being less experienced drivers, they are more likely to text than adults. A Federal Communications Commission consumer advisory on texting while driving quotes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as reporting that driver distraction was the cause of 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008, resulting in 5,800 fatalities and 515,000 injuries. The American Automobile Association says that "taking your eyes off of the road for two seconds doubles your risk of getting into a crash."Inthinc, a Salt Lake City company, was at the Consumer Electronics Show with a solution for parents and companies whose employees have company issued phones. The product, which is called Tiwi and costs $299 plus a $29.95 monthly subscription fee, can disable a cell phone for calling or texting, according to CEO Todd Follmer. It can also report the person's speed, whether they're engaged in aggressive driving, and even if they're using their seat belt. Parents or employers can check in via an Internet portal.
Floor bots: The new Roomba 760 (back) for vacuuming and Scooba 230 (front) for scrubbing. (Credit:Tim Hornyak/CNET)LAS VEGAS--iRobot demoed its updated line of robot floor cleaners at CES 2011, showing off a more powerful Roomba vacuum bot and a much more compact Scooba floor scrubber. Roomba hoovered some crushed Cheerios, while Scooba got to work on a coffee-stained tile floor. Both robots go on sale this spring. They're similar to their predecessors, but have important differences. Both updates have the iAdapt cleaning tech, a sensor and software system that monitors the floor more than 60 times per second and chooses from dozens of robot behaviors to get the job done, the company says. I played around with the Scooba 350 last year, and wasn't crazy about its bulk, which proved a bit of a pain when emptying the cleaning fluid tanks. At only 6.5 inches across and 3.5 inches tall, the new Scooba 230 has a much smaller footprint, making maintenance easier, and it can be grabbed with one hand. The new size, however, is mainly designed to allow the robot to get into tight corners around toilets, which was never a delightful chore anyway. The 230 can scrub up to 150 square feet of sealed hardwood, tile, or linoleum floors, and has edge-detect sensors to keep it away from stairs and drop-offs while working. The company says it can neutralize up to 97 percent of common household bacteria. A neat feature is how the reservoirs work: An active reservoir system separates the cleaning solution from the dirty water. The active reservoir shrinks as more cleaning fluid is put down on the floor, allowing it to suck up more dirty water. iRobot says this eliminates dirty water from the cleaning area so the robot isn't just moving dirt around like a mop can.

0 Vote(s)

Intel has rolled out an ultrasmall solid-state drive, targeting dual-drive laptops that pair an SSD with a hard disk drive.Intel&39's ultrasmall Solid-State Drive 310 is aimed at dual-drive laptops. (Credit:Intel)Intel's Solid-State Drive 310 Series delivers "full SSD performance in 1/8th the size," according to Intel's announcement today. The SSD contains 34-nanometer (one of Intel's most advanced chip manufacturing processes) Intel NAND flash memory and is available in an m-SATA form factor (see photo) in 40GB and 80GB capacities. It weighs just 10 grams. In addition to dual-drive laptops, Intel said it is targeting single-drive Netbooks and tablets. In a dual-drive laptop, an SSD is used to "accelerate boot time and access to frequently used applications or files," Intel said. High-end gaming laptop vendors have been offering dual-drive configurations for some time. A typical configuration consists of a large-capacity HDD and smaller-capacity SSD. SSDs can be extremely fast, leaving traditional hard disks in the dust when reading data. And in ultrathin laptops, they are being used as the primary drive due to space and heat considerations. Apple has moved its entire MacBook Air line to SSDs. And ultrathin designs like the Sony Vaio X series use SSDs because, like the MacBook Air, they cannot accommodate the relative bulk of a standard hard disk. Lenovo said it will tap the new Intel SSDs. "The Intel SSD 310 series will allow us to provide the advantages of a full-performance Intel SSD paired with the storage of a hard disk drive in a small, dual-drive system," said Tom Butler, director of ThinkPad product marketing, in a statement. There are competitors out there, too. Seagate, for example, offers a 500GB Momentus XT hard disk with integrated flash memory for extra speed. And Toshiba is supplying the compact solid-state drives--what Apple calls "flash storage"--in the new MacBook Airs. Intel's SSD 310 is priced at $99 for the 40GB model and $179 for the 80GB version, both in 1,000-unit quantities.

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's Chrome for a Cause browser extension translates Web browsing into charitable donations.(Credit:Google)Google Chrome users can donate to charity through Sunday simply by downloading the Chrome for a Cause browser extension and surfing the Web. The system counts the tabs while the user browses the Web. Google plans to donate money based on how many tabs are clicked on each day, up to a maximum of 250 tabs per day per user. It did not specify how much money it would donate per tabs clicked on, though it did say it will donate up to $1 million as part of this effort. The campaign ends on Sunday. People can choose from five organizations to contribute to. The groups are: The Nature Conservancy' Charity: Water, a nonprofit organization working to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations' Doctors Without Borders' Un Techo para mi Pas, which builds transitional housing for impoverished families' and Room to Read, a nonprofit focused on child literacy and gender equality in education. After a short bit of use, a small window popped up for me, telling me how many tabs I had clicked and what that can result in for the charities. Clicking on 10 tabs, according to Google, will result in one book donated or one tree planted. Users must sign into their Google accounts to participate so that the system can keep track of the number of tabs clicked and allow users to select a charity. Google also plans to collect usage statistics and information on how often other product features are used, and then delete the data after eight weeks. More information is available on the Google Chrome Blog.

0 Vote(s)

CES 2010 was a lightweight show when it came to cell phones and smartphones. That's often the case with CES, as mobile devices have to share the stage with bigger products like 3D televisions and futuristic robots. That's set to change at CES 2011 of course, but we wanted to take some time and take a look back at the phones of CES 2010.Mobile handsets of CES 2010: Where are they now (photos) We awarded the Best of CES 2010 in the mobile category to the LG Lotus Elite, because that was the most innovative handset we saw at the show. Even though it was really a sequel to the LG Lotus of the previous year, the Lotus Elite had a great wow factor with its fashion-forward looks, innovative external touch screen, and overall features. Even if it's "just" a simple messaging phone, it was one we liked. This is true even when we ended up reviewing it later on.Other Best of CES nominees included the Motorola Backflip and the Sonim XP3.2 Quest Pro. We thought the Backflip had an interesting design, but we had questions about the usability of the back touch pad and the durability of the oddly placed keyboard. We ended up liking it a bit more than we anticipated when we reviewed it later on, but we still weren't too pleased with its sluggish performance. The Sonim XP3.2 Quest Pro, while newly updated with Gorilla Glass and GPS features, was really an update of a previous product. A couple of other products that debuted at CES 2010 were the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus, both of which were sequels of the previous year's Palm products. One thing we should note is that even though we saw Google'sNexus One in Las Vegas, it didn't technically debut at CES, which is why it didn't get nominated. Otherwise, I think we can agree it would have been a shoo-in.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Air Force Research Laboratory)PlayStations have seen plenty of army action with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops. Now they're doing real-life military duty as part of the Condor Cluster, a U.S. Air Force supercomputer whose off-the-shelf components include more than 1,700Sony PS3 processors. The computer--which will undertake a range of tasks including synthetic aperture radar enhancement, image enhancement, and pattern recognition research--also incorporates 168 separate graphical processing units. It's capable of computing about 500 trillion calculations per second, which makes it some 50,000 times faster than the average laptop. As such, the Condor can read a whopping 20 pages of information per second. Even when 20 percent to 30 percent of the characters on a page are removed, the computer can recover all of the sentences and words with about 99.9 percent accuracy, according to the official Web site of the U.S. Air Force. Affordability was a key motivator in the decision to use PS3 processors. "The total cost of the Condor system was approximately $2 million, which is a cost savings of between 10 and 20 times for the equivalent capability," said Mark Barnell, director of the Air Force Research Laboratory's high-power computing division. He said the Condor isn't made to compete with the world's largest general-purpose supercomputers, but is meant for highly specific military tasks. "The biggest thing for us was [that] the particular applications and the hardware we chose to build this computer with purposely match those applications well," he said.Initial projects scheduled for the Department of Defense mega-machine, housed in Rome, N.Y., will include neuromorphic artificial intelligence research, in which programmers will "teach" the computer to read symbols, letters, words, and sentences so it can fill in human gaps and correct human errors. The military has for several years now turned to video games to recruit and train personnel. The U.S. Army Experience Center in Philadelphia, now shuttered, also incorporated hardware, sporting computers preloaded with military video games, game controllers, and video displays that described military bases and career options. The Condor Cluster, however, marks an unusual twist in the relationship between the Armed Forces and the game industry. The Air Force says it believes the Condor Cluster currently holds the spot as the 35th- or 36th-fastest computer in the world, a standing that could improve even more with pending updates.

0 Vote(s)

Amazon may offer one of the best holiday deals on the red-hot MacBook Air. But don't count out California retail giant Fry's Electronics before doing the usual comparison with Best Buy. The 11.6-inch MacBook Air can be had for $959 at Amazon. But Fry&39's beats that by a few dollars.(Credit:Amazon)Amazon is serving up a pretty good deal on the popular 11.6-inch MacBook Air, offering the MC505LL/A model right now for $959, which Apple lists for $999 (1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip, 64GB flash memory drive, and 2GB RAM). This was based on a price check I did Saturday morning Pacific Time. Which brings me to a caveat: the price can change quickly, as demand for this unit appears to be high. Fry's Electronics--whose giant warehouse-size stores are located mostly in California and Texas--will beat that price, though. At a Fry's I visited Friday night in Los Angeles, the MC505LL/A Air model was on sale for $949. Fry&39's, a California phenomenon, beats all rivals on decor.(Credit:Brooke Crothers)Not to be outdone, the MacConnection is selling the same model for $1 less, at $948. Though the online store shows it "on order." Amazon is also offering the 11.6-inch MacBook Air model MC506LL/A (which ups the flash drive capacity to 128GB from 64GB) for $1,148.99, a discount of $50 off the list price. So far, Best Buy isn't offering any special deals on the new MacBook Air. (Correction: The current-generation 13.3-inch model is available for $1,299 with a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB Memory, and a 128GB flash memory drive. That's a few hundred dollars less than I paid for the similarly-configured, prior-generation 13.3-inch model with a 1.86GHz processor, the same-capacity solid-state drive and same amount of memory. Ironically, that older model is listed for $1,699 on Best Buy's site. Go figure. ) And let me add as a postscript: Fry's beats Best Buy handily (for effort, not necessarily the result) on interior decorating. (Amazon can't compete because it has no brick-and-mortar stores.) I've been to Fry's stores all over California--Palo Alto, Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles, and throw in Phoenix, Arizona, too--and I always find myself gawking and/or scratching my head at the curious dioramas that usually occupy a corner of the store (see photo). And decor, as well as bargains, usually get amped up during the holidays.Updated at 9:30 p.m. PST: correcting for current 13.3-inch MacBook Air model with 1.86GHz processor.

0 Vote(s)

WikiLeaks no longer has a home at Amazon. The controversial site, which has roused the ire of the U.S. government for leaking classified information, is no longer being hosted by Amazon's Web servers as of yesterday.WikiLeaks had been tapping into Amazon's EC2, or Elastic Cloud Computing service--including earlier this week. WikiLeaks said yesterday it's now being hosted by servers in Europe, according to Reuters. In response to its expulsion from Amazon, WikiLeaks tweeted two comments:"WikiLeaks servers at Amazon ousted. Free speech the land of the free--fine our $ are now spent to employ people in Europe."and"If Amazon are so uncomfortable with the first amendment, they should get out of the business of selling books."Amazon may have dropped WikiLeaks following inquiries from Sen. Joseph Lieberman (Ind.-Conn.), who is chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Lieberman's staff contacted Amazon officials on Tuesday asking them to explain the company's relationship with WikiLeaks. In response to Amazon's move to drop WikiLeaks, Lieberman issued a statement that reads in part:"I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on Wikileaks' previous publication of classified material. The company's decision to cut off Wikileaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies Wikileaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material. I call on any other company or organization that is hosting WikiLeaks to immediately terminate its relationship with them."Lieberman added that he plans to further question Amazon about its relationship with WikiLeaks and determine what it and other hosting providers can do to make sure they're not used to "distribute stolen, classified information."Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNET. WikiLeaks has repeatedly found itself in trouble with the U.S. government over its leaking of sensitive information. But the latest release of classified and in many cases embarrassing documents from the U.S. State Department has prompted calls among some politicians to brand the site a terrorist group, putting it in the same category as al-Qaeda. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, is among those looking to clamp down on the site, saying that "WikiLeaks presents a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States."WikiLeaks has faced other pressures as well. It was hit by hackers since last weekend. The cyberattacks, which included distributed denial of service attacks, were seen as an attempt to take down the site to keep people from reading the latest round of classified disclosures.
It should come as no surprise that Apple and Android are the two "most desired" smartphone systems, according to a new Nielsen survey of mobile phone users. But the results vary a bit based on the people who were surveyed.Among current smartphone owners questioned by Nielsen, the survey results out today show that 35 percent are looking to buy aniPhone as their next device, while 28 percent plan to go for an Android phone. But among those who currently own a feature phone and want to upgrade to a smartphone, 25 percent are eyeing an iPhone and 28 percent will likely opt for an Android device.(Credit:Nielsen)To define the difference: smartphones run a third-party operating system, such as Apple's iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia's Symbian, and they support third-party mobile apps. Feature phones use a proprietary OS, are typically unable to run third-party apps, and usually have other limitations.Among age groups, the iPhone proved slightly more desirable than an Android phone to people 18-24, 25-34, and especially those 55 and older, according to Nielsen. Those 35-54 preferred an Android device as their next phone by a slight margin. And by gender, women favor the iPhone as their next purchase, while men are more interested in Android.Smartphone owners were more decisive than feature phone users about their next device in terms of operating system. Among those who presently use a feature phone, 25 percent said they were "not sure" what their next phone would be, compared with only 13 percent of smartphone users who were equally uncertain. People 55 and older were also less certain than younger users over which mobile OS they'd want for their next phone.Overall, 29.7 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers use smartphones, compared with 70.3 percent who still have feature phones. The most common smartphones platforms in the U.S. are the iPhone's iOS and the BlackBerry OS, each with 27 percent of the market, while Android now holds a 22 percent share, according to Nielsen's data.(Credit:Nielsen)

0 Vote(s)

Chrome gained 0.75 percentage points of global browser usage share in November.(Credit:Net Applications)November was a good month for Google's browser ambitions as Chrome won over a sizable new fraction of Web usage.Chrome usage rose from 8.5 percent of worldwide Web usage in October to 9.3 percent in November, according to statistics released today by Net Applications, whose analytics software monitors Web traffic extensively.Chrome claimed most of that share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which dropped in overall usage from 59.2 percent to 58.3 percent. Chrome's gains means Google has an easier time pursuing its agenda--adding new features for Web programmers, modifying Net communication protocols to make them faster, and generally trying to make the Internet a place where people spend more of their lives.Third-placeFirefox was essentially flat yet again at 22.8 percent, whileSafari crept upward from 5.4 percent to 5.6 percent and Opera slipped from 2.3 percent to 2.2 percent.Microsoft, though has plenty of silver lining: its ancient Internet Explorer 6 is gradually fading from use, and the newerIE8 grew in usage from October to November nearly as much as Chrome overall did. (IE9, a more radical upgrade, remains in beta testing.)"One of our main missions here on the IE team at Microsoft is to get people off of IE6 and onto a later version of IE as fast as humanly possible," Roger Capriotti, director of Internet Explorer product marketing, said in the blog post. "In the last six months, IE6 usage is now declining faster among enterprises than it is among worldwide consumers. We believe this reflects how organizations are recognizing the need to migrate to a modern browser."Corporations' software changes can be gated by conservative administrators, upgrade expenses, and dependence on a particular browser. Thus their lingering usage of IE6 has been a particular challenge for Microsoft and developers eager not to spend long hours trying to craft modern Web sites for the old browser.Net Applications said China remains a major holdout for IE6, where 45.2 percent of people use it. That compares with 14.6 percent worldwide. Microsoft is happy to point to signs of IE6&39's fading usage.(Credit:Microsoft)

0 Vote(s)

Kinect, from Microsoft, has a wide range of uses. But Microsoft may not have imagined the motion-controller as a sex toy. Others have.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)You knew it was coming. It was inevitable. And, yes, I'm talking about Kinect sex. With almost any hot new tech toy, especially one with a heavy degree of interactivity--which Microsoft's motion-sensitive controller has in spades--someone is going to try to hack it and try to make it X-rated. The Kinect is no exception. To date, there are no overtly sexual Kinect games on the market, though the folks who put together Kinect MotionSwinger (pretty NSFW) would like you to believe--for a moment at least--otherwise. But that's nothing more than a joke concept for a Kinect sex game put together with some imagery from Second Life.Still, when it comes to finding ways to utilize new technology for, shall we say, lewd purposes, there are few people more qualified thank Kyle (qDot) Machulis, the dean of the underground sex-tech genre known as teledildonics. In a Sunday blog post titled "Kinect Sex--Because you knew I'd make this post sooner or later," Machulis finally brings his trained eye to the project that countless millions were surely waiting for him to get around to and evaluates the kink potential of the device Microsoft is hoping may breathe new life into itsXbox 360 video game console. The question, as Machulis delicately puts it, is "How can I [have sex]" using KinectAs he quickly points out, Kinect most likely wasn't designed for such a purpose, and though the device was made to recognize even minute movements by a person's body, it's geared to look for our larger limbs, like arms and legs."Microsoft put a ton of work into making the Kinect track the human body as a whole, so you can play games by jumping and running and generally acting the...fool and feel like you're in the game instead of just sad," Machulis wrote. "Genitalia, for the most part, are not a major geometric feature of the human body when taken in perspective of physical size....Neither are they normally used in the control of video games, be they rated [for all] or [for adults only]."Machulis said he experimented by waving a sex toy in front of a Kinect, and then by wagging his tongue around in front of it, and concluded that the graphics quality isn't very good, though the device was capable of picking up both the toy and his tongue. "In short, porn is about sex, but for many customers, it's also about being able to see the sex in a way that doesn't make you think, 'Wait, why does her arm detach completely when her [breast] is in front of it,'" Machulis wrote. "The pattern the Kinect uses to get depth data is made for picking up full bodies to control video games, and therefore isn't quite so good at picking up minutiae about those bodies."Yet, Machulis also points out that because the Kinect is both very good at picking up hand-based gestures and capable of identifying discrete body parts like "manbreasts" (see video below), there is the distinct possibility that the device could be used to digitize--albeit with less than ideal graphics quality--simulated sexual motions. Kinect Titty Tracker from Dan Wilcox on Vimeo."The Kinect alleviates the need for having hardware, because now as long as we have a shot of the 'action,' as it were, we can use that 'gesture' as a control," Machulis wrote. "Not only that, the gesture itself is the toy. Or you could employ a toy under the gesture."There are limits, of course. Without being too graphic, it seems that though presenting good quality imagery based on some hand-gesture-oriented sexual activity may currently be "out of the Kinect's normal operating procedure," Machulis suggested that "I'm sure we'll figure something out."More to the point, it appears Machulis is hoping that others who are into mashing up technology and sexuality will "prove me a sexual Luddite once again. At least I hope they will."

0 Vote(s)

editor's notebook The future just keeps getting closer and closer these days. Not only do we have iPhones with FaceTime--which, when combined with theiPod Nano (as I'm sure they will be before too long) will come pretty close to creating a mass-market version of Dick Tracy's 2-way wrist TV--we've also got robot cars and, ahem, robot journalists (which I'm trying to keep at bay by way of this terribly sophisticated and never-ending sentence--apparently the roboscribes have trouble with such Proustian gymnastics: Quick! They're coming for our jobs! Hand me another semicolon and an em dash!).And too, we've got Minority Report-like gesture-driven interfaces and now this: a multiuser touch screen the size of a desk, which curves up to create a, well, desktop like the metaphorical one you may be staring at right now.Cool!I realize some of you will scoff at this device--whipped up by The Media Computing Group at Germany's RWTH Aachen University, and brought to my attention by Engadget--but I freely admit that it fires my imagination.I can see it combined with the type of Wacom pen-and-tablet device that lets you "draw" directly on screen. As a sometime graphic designer, I'd be in nirvana. I could hunch over in a hard-working, tortured artist kind of way and draw a picture or manipulate a Photoshop file, save a version of it, and then whisk that version across the (horizontal) desktop to see it curve up onto the (vertical) desktop that would now be a perfect bulletin board.(Credit:Media Computing Group)I can see it incorporating the aforementioned gesture-driven technology to allow me to sit back and point at the drawings on my bulletin board to choose the ones I like: I could snap my fingers, say, and preserve those files' then--I don't know--dismiss the rejects with a disdainful backhanded wave and watch them burst into unbelievably lifelike flames courtesy of a supercharged graphics card or an up-and-coming 3D Web technology like WebGL. A client meeting was never so much fun! It's a multiuser device: I could set the client's favorite drawings ablaze, and she could ignite mine! We could create a new videogame! I'd let her win! I'd have to! She's now my only source of income--my journalism job having been stolen by R2-D2!But enough of my overheated holiday-weekend imaginings' irrelevant asides about robots' and tiresome, tiresome, tiresome--tiresome--syntactical pyrotechnics. Why don't you take a look at the video and share with us your own brilliant vaporware in the comments section below(And, yes, I know, we've already had at least one real-life interpretation of the Dick Tracy gadget--and for a long time now. See I told you the future just keeps getting closer. So close it's become the past. Feel free to point out if and where the technology mashup I've conjured already exists--and when it appeared.)

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft&39's Kinect will be in short supply this holiday season.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)GameStop isn't pulling any punches with its expectations of product supply this holiday season.Speaking to investors during an earnings call yesterday, GameStop president Tony Bartel said that customers shouldn't wait to get their hands on Kinect, Microsoft's motion-gaming peripheral that allows users to control on-screen action with only body movement."[Kinect] will be a hot item through the holiday season and the key opportunity will be just to continue to keep them in stock," Bartel said during the call, according to a transcript provided by SeekingAlpha. "So, whenever consumers do see Kinect and they want Kinect for the holiday season, they should pick it up because it will be in short supply in the holiday."Bartel went on to say that Sony'sPlayStation Move will also be "in short supply" during the holiday season. He wouldn't provide exact sales figures for either the Kinect or the Move, but he did say that GameStop was seeing that Kinect Sports and Dance Central were the most coveted titles among Kinect buyers. In Bartel's estimation, according to the SeekingAlpha transcript, demand could rise high enough that this holiday season might match that of theWii's initial launch when customers followed UPS and FedEx trucks to stores to ensure they could get their hands on Nintendo's platform."[With] the Wii phenomenon, we had customers following UPS trucks to our store," Bartel said, according to SeekingAlpha's transcript. "I think you are going to have the exact same thing with new [Move] controllers and with the Kinect Bundle that goes out. I think you are going to have consumers following the UPS truck to our stores to pick up that product as soon as they can find it."Finally, Bartel said that GameStop's in-stock guarantee on its products will not apply to the Kinect this holiday season.Bartel's comments on the Kinect seem to follow what Microsoft has been saying. Microsoft revealed earlier this week that it sold 1 million Kinect units in the device's first 10 days of availability. It took Sony's PlayStation Move 30 days to reach that figure. Moreover, Microsoft said earlier this week that it's currently on pace to sell 5 million Kinect units by the end of the year.Microsoft did not immediately respond to request for comment on how it plans to maintain supply to meet demand this holiday season.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Rosenfeld Media/Flickr)Of the 2,200 people who filed 250,000 mood status updates through theiPhone app called Track Your Happiness, those who were at their happiest were two things: highly focused and having sex. In fact, they rated their emotion level an average score of 90 on a scale of 1 to 100.Perhaps unsurprisingly, sex turned out to produce the highest rating of any activity recorded, according to research published in Science by Harvard psychologists.Whether they actually rated their mood mid-coitus or waited until after remains unknown, which is a shame, because it would be interesting to know whether people are actually happier during sex or after.Perhaps the biggest surprise out of the Harvard-created Track Your Happiness project involved mind-wandering. Out of those quarter-million responses, people reported that their minds were wandering some 47 percent of the time. Again, it remains unclear whether people's minds actually wander half of their waking hours or just half the time they are using their iPhones to report on happiness levels.Assuming the former, it turns out that the more people's minds wander, the less happy they report themselves feeling. In fact, during sex, people reported wandering thoughts only 10 percent of the time. Exercise was next best, then conversation, listening to music, followed by walking, eating, praying, meditating, and cooking.Personal grooming, commuting, and working rounded out the bottom of the list. Sorry, dear boss and fellow bus passengers.Another iPhone happiness tracking app, called Mappiness, gathers data from 22,000 users in the U.K. and boasts more than a million happiness ratings. For most people, Saturday at 8 p.m. ranks the highest. The secret to happiness, the research out of Harvard suggests, is what those who engage in meditation have been saying for years: live in the moment."If you ask people to imagine winning the lottery, they typically talk about the things they would do--'I'd go to Italy, I'd buy a boat, I'd lay on the beach'--and they rarely mention the things they would think," Harvard Professor Daniel Gilbert recently told The New York Times. "But our data suggest that the location of the body is much less important than the location of the mind, and that the former has surprisingly little influence on the latter. The heart goes where the head takes it, and neither cares much about the whereabouts of the feet."If you're interested in tracking your own happiness levels, or you think these findings are bull and want to prove them wrong, the researchers continue to seek more app users, and thus data. Now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to indulge in a little daydreaming. Defying the wisdom of experts, after all, surely has a role to play.

0 Vote(s)

So you remember how Apple used to laugh at Microsoft for years and yearsYou know, there was that portly chap in the glasses who couldn't quite get anything right and secretly marveled at Apple's ability to both be very clever and, well, attract a very high class of sleeping partnerWell, Microsoft has decided to try its hand at handing it to Apple. For look what has appeared on the Windows YouTube site. Yes, it's aWindows 7 "I'm a PC" ad. (Oh, you might call it a video. But to me, everything is an ad, regardless of where it happens to appear.)Here we haveMac and PC flying on a rocket-plane made out of Andy Warhol's castoff props. Scarcely has the rocket-plane reached its cruising altitude before the Windows 7 PC shows off its buff new exterior. And, indeed, interior. For it has something that Mac does not. No, not the adulation of Megan Fox, but the next best thing. Yes, built-in Blu-Ray.Perhaps you are as completely mesmerized by this information as is the rather worn-out Mac in this ad. Perhaps the presence of built-in Blu-Ray will tip the balance for you, so that your enjoyment of "Avatar" will feel four-dimensional the next time you go on a rocket-plane to visit your relatives. For myself, I am reminded of reality shows. They are always better when there is a certain amount of conflict. One loud woman decides to tug at another loud woman's hair extensions on "The Bachelor." One large man steals another large man's pea puree on "Top Chef." These are the things that keep us excited, begging for more.So it is quite delightful that Microsoft's former chubby, downtrodden self is standing up to the handsome, eligible Mac that began to show a little smugness beneath its dazzling beauty. (Oh, even George Clooney succumbs just once in awhile.) Welcome, then, to the "I'm a PC and you're an Annoyingly Popular Former High School Quarterback and Rhodes Scholar with Bulges in All the Right Places and a House on Lake Como" campaign.May the fight be unfair, amusing, and draw just a little blood.

0 Vote(s)

Let's just say it's a good thing this breakthrough didn't come around when I was in my early twenties, or I may have been tempted to spend a little more time at my favorite neighborhood watering hole.Scientists at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center say they've successfully used human liver cells to create miniature livers that function like their larger, more naturally derived counterparts.Using a process called decellularization, the team rinsed real livers from an unspecified animal with detergent, stripping them of all their cells and leaving only a collagen-based structure behind. They then introduced two types of cells--immature human liver cells and endothelial cells that line blood vessels--via a system of tiny vessels in the liver. The livers were then placed in a bioreactor that flooded them with nutrients and oxygen. After a week had passed, the team saw that new, functional liver tissue had grown within that biological "scaffolding."Despite the success of the project, the researchers were quick to caution that their work is a long way from making its way into any sort of human treatment. For one thing, the manufactured livers have only been tested in the lab. Whether they'll function as well when transplanted into an animal's body is yet to be seen. There is also the challenge of making a similar organ large enough for human use."We are excited about the possibilities this research represents, but must stress that we're at an early stage and many technical hurdles must be overcome before it could benefit patients," said Shay Soker, professor of regenerative medicine and the project's director. "Not only must we learn how to grow billions of liver cells at one time in order to engineer livers large enough for patients, but we must determine whether these organs are safe to use in patients."Still, the news is encouraging. And while it's not the first time organ tissue has been manufactured in a lab, it is the first time a functional human liver has been created, according to the team's statement. The results, they say, could have eventual implications not only for people with liver disease, but also for those needing other organs that are in chronic short supply, such as kidneys or pancreases. The research was presented yesterday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in Boston.

0 Vote(s)

But more impressive here is the update to the driving tech. Boasting 425 horsepower in SRT trim, the Challenger is surprisingly drivable. It does equally well crawling through a parking lot or blasting down a country road. Far less back-breaking than other modern muscle cars, it exhibits European refinement in ride quality.Tech-wise, it looks a little rough, but it is feature rich. We didn't like using the graphical interface for the navigation system, but voice command worked very well.iPod and phone integration also did their jobs.Check out our full 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 review.

0 Vote(s)

A 3D body scanner in development for 10 years and out this month from U.K. company Select Research, can not only tell how obese you are in relation to what's recommended, but exactly where those numerous high-tea buffets have distributed themselves. Ouch. Say hello to BVI, or body volume index, and goodbye to BMI, or body mass index, which uses a standard international formula to calculate body weight. The more detailed BVI system is a 7-foot-tall booth that scans a patient, stripped down to his or her undergarments, using 16 sensors and 32 cameras. In a whopping six seconds, more than 200 linear data measurements of the patient's body are gathered and sent to a secure server to be accessed and analyzed by authorized doctors. An exact "virtual" image of a person's shape is also created. The BVI scanner uses white light but no radiation. The system, developed in conjunction with Aston University in Birmingham, England' Heartlands NHS Hospital, also in Birmingham' and the Mayo Clinic, scanned over 2,000 test subjects across the United Kingdom, United States, and Europe to fine-tune the norms for fat deposition in various parts of the body according to age, gender, body shape, and body composition. As developed countries face increasingly obese populations, it's hoped that the device will be able to alert doctors to the potential for heart disease, stroke, or diabetes."Most people in the world realize that carrying extra weight around the stomach means that they do have a greater health risk, commonly known in healthcare as central obesity," Select Research's Dr. Richard Barnes said. "What BVI now offers the world is a brand new way of measuring the abdominal area which BMI simply cannot do." Speaking to the Daily Mail, Barnes added that "BMI was never meant to be used as an individual assessment for obesity and we believe that after nearly 200 years, each patient deserves to be measured in a way that takes their own body shape and lifestyle factors into account."Now, all that's left is to hope that when this comes around to our local doctor's office, we won't get hit with a fat consultation fee.The body volume index could make BMI outdated as the former reveals how two people with similar BMIs could have fat distributed differently.
Samsung Mesmerize(Credit:U.S. Cellular)U.S. Cellular bolstered its Android lineup today when it announced its new Mesmerize smartphone. Part of the Galaxy S series, the Mesmerize joins the Samsung Acclaim and HTC Desire in the carrier's growing Android repertoire. The hardware on the Mesmerize is nearly identical to that found on the other Galaxy S series handsets with its 4-inch Super AMOLED display Although the phone comes with Android 2.1 out of the box, U.S. Cellular claims customers will be able to upgrade to 2.2 "Froyo" later this year. Features inlcude a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture, and Samsung's Media Hub video store. Looking forward, the Chicago-based carrier promises two more Android phones in the LG Apex and LG Optimus U. Not much is known about the Apex, but I venture to guess the Optimus U will be very similar to the Optimus T from T-Mobile and the Optimus S from Sprint. The Mesmerize runs $199 after $80 mail-in rebate and two-year service agreement and can be purchased immediately.
Here&'s the latest action we&'re following today on the GreenBeat:Think City electric car recalled &8212' The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recalled all 39 of the 2011 Think City two-seater electric cars (pictured), Green Car Reports writes. Sixteen of the models have an issue with a seatbelt missing the component to properly hold a child&'s seat, while 23 may have inadequate defroster systems. The recall calls for the removal and replacement of the insufficient parts.Khosla predicts disruptive new energy sources &8212' Cleantech venture capitalist Vinod Khosla recently told an audience that he doesn&'t believe there will be a lithium ion battery by 2025 because there isn&'t enough available lithium in the world to power the batteries needed for electric vehicles. He&'s also betting that a cheaper alternative to the silicon-based solar cell will have emerged by that time, Forbes reports.Power-One opens plant in Phoenix &8212' The facility is thefirst North American manufacturing plant for Power-One, the second-largest power inverter maker in the world. Inverters are a key part of renewable energy, converting the direct current (DC) energy generated by solar panels and wind turbines into the alternating current (AC) electricity for the grid. The plant will reach a capacity of 1 gigawatt in production by the end of the year.Control4 lands NV Energy deal for home energy management-- Control4 will deploy its home energy management devices as part of a smart grid project for Nevada utility NV Energy. The devices (example pictured, right) will allow NV Energy to manage residential energy load and in particular deploy demand response solutions on a large scale. Demand response offerings allow residents to opt into programs to earn rebates for dialing back electricity use during peak load times.Solar player Heliovolt raises $8.5 million in debt &8212' The Austin, Tex.-based thin-film solar panel manufacturing startup has $1.5 million to go before it reaches its $10 million goal, according to an SEC filing. The company plans to begin shipping modules in the second quarter of this year, Earth2Tech reports.OriginOil lands deal with MBD Energy &8212' Carbon capture company MBD Energy said it will test out OriginOil&'s algae oil extraction system at three of Australia&'s largest coal-fired power plants. The pilots will take concentrated CO2 emissions to produce oil-rich algae via MBD&'s technology. OriginOil&'s technology will then harvest algae oil and biomass from the mix, which can be used to produce oil and petroleum-based products like plastics. If all goes well, the projects have the potential to grow to commercial-scale.Next Story: Intel&'s billion-dollar mistake: Why chip flaws are so hard to fix Previous Story: IBM, Intel, TechStars and the White House start up AmericaPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: algae fuel, algae oil, batteries, biofuels, demand response, electric cars, electric vehicles, home energy management, inverters, lithium-ion batteries, Solar, thin film solar, windCompanies: Control4, HelioVolt, Khosla Ventures, MBD Energy, NV Energy, OriginOil, Power One, ThinkPeople: Vinod Khosla Tags: algae fuel, algae oil, batteries, biofuels, demand response, electric cars, electric vehicles, home energy management, inverters, lithium-ion batteries, Solar, thin film solar, windCompanies: Control4, HelioVolt, Khosla Ventures, MBD Energy, NV Energy, OriginOil, Power One, ThinkPeople: Vinod KhoslaIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.

Last night, social introduction service Hashable rolled out a new site design to members. While the site is still semi-closed (you need an invite or introduction from an existing member to get ina4"the first 500 readers to follow @hashable on Twitter will get one), it is playing with some very interesting ways to rank your online social connections. One of the new features on the site allows you to see your contacts by the strength of your relationship on Hashable. The more interactions you have with that person, and whether or not they reciprocate, determines whether you are &''tight,&'', &''connected,&'' or merely &''acquainted.&'' Hashable is taking on LinkedIn in a very lightweight way. Instead of static degrees of separation, you can see exactly who you are connected with has the strongest connection to someone else you might be seeking an introduction to. Hashable is also now starting to show &''hashbits&'' whenever you post a connection. A hashbit is just a serendipitous bit of information showing how one person you know is also connected to someone else you know. You can connect with people on Hashable either through Twitter or email, and it serves as both a business introduction service and a souped-up online address book. CEO Michael Yavonditte calls it a &''relationship book&'' because it tracks your business relationships over time. It starts out with a simple intro (you introduce people by using the hashtag &''intro&'' in a Tweet and their Twitter handles), but early users are also recording when they justmet someone, or go out for drinks, lunch, or dinner. You can use Hashable to publicly thank someone, or make up your own hashes. I use it to record when a startup founder gives me a demo. These descriptive tags make those hashbits more interesting because they flesh out how people are related. Imagine when people start hashing their dates on this service. The more you use Hashable, the more points, or Hashcred, you get. Every city has a leaderboard, and soon there wil be leaderboards by industry and profession. So people will be competing to be the startup lawyer with the most Hashcred. It&'s a way to measure status for super-networkers. But even if you are not into the competitive aspect of the service, you can use it just as a simple way to keep track of the people you meet and write notes about those meetings either to yourself in private or publicly. Then later on if you are going to meet that person again you can see your history, or you can search by hashtag to see all the demos you&'ve gotten or people you have justmet. And the more you interact with any given person, the stronger your connection strength becomes.Once Hashable opens up more publicly in the coming weeks, we&'ll see if this new form of business networking catches on. Yavonditte quit LinkedIn a few days ago, and he no doubt hopes you will too. Here&'s a video interview I did with him last October:CrunchBase InformationHashableLinkedInInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

The team behind Microsoft&'s oft-maligned email service, Hotmail, is hoping to score back some of its users from the titans in the industry like Gmail by doing something Google hasn&'t quite pulled off: showing they are human.Hotmail team members appealed to the community of news aggregation site Reddit.com by posting an &''ask-me-anything&'' thread today, where users can come in and basically ask questions about the service and get feedback from the Hotmail team. But leave it to the tech- and Internet-savvy Reddit community to ask the hardest question. The top-rated question in the thread is why users should abandon their Gmail accounts and head over to Hotmail. The comments immediately put the Hotmail on the defensive, with Reddit users wondering why the service didn&'t use some of the most popular email protocols that sync up to mobile devices and external email programs.Hotmail has faded into a bit of obscurity after Gmail emerged as the clear email service to beat. (Though in terms of total users, research firm comScore shows that Hotmail&'s still king, with 361.7 million users compared to Gmail&'s 193.3 million.) Gmail syncs with the rest of its applications like Google Calendar. Google also has the edge in that a lot of companies use its email service and connect it with other apps, like Analytics. Google Apps has signed up 3 million companies with more than 30 million users total. The Hotmail team said Microsoft is trying a number of things to differentiate itself from Gmail and make it more viable, like removing limits on attachment sizes and offering a deeper level of connectivity with its web-based Office applications. But file-sharing is really a non-issue at this point with the emergence of services like Dropbox. Google has also been in the web-based office game for some time now. It&'s not the first time Microsoft has ventured into Reddit. The company dove into Reddit back in September to help promote the newest version of its Internet-browsing application, Internet Explorer 9. The feedback then was pretty positive a4" but that&'s mostly because it was actually a decent application. Microsoft even purchased advertising&nbsp'for IE9 on Reddit, a community that&nbsp'hasna4a4t traditionally been friendly to the black sheep of the browser family. It seems the fangs are out in this thread as well. Best of luck to Microsoft while it navigates the Internets on this one.Next Story: Call of Duty and Kinect help video game sales hit record in November Previous Story: Email: The hottest revenue generation technology in social mediaPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: ask me anything, Hotmail, Microsoft Hotmail, RedditCompanies: Conde Nast, Microsoft, Reddit Tags: ask me anything, Hotmail, Microsoft Hotmail, RedditCompanies: Conde Nast, Microsoft, RedditMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Techmeme, the news aggregator thata4a4s usually my first stop on the Web, just announced that ita4a4s adding a new kind of headline to the mix &8212' tweets posted on Twitter. For Techmeme, the move seems like an obvious extension of the site&'s existing Twitter-based news tip system. This should bring in a fresh, fast source of news. Tweets will also be incorporated in the discussion and commentary sections under each headline. And Techmeme usually tries to highlight the publication that first broke a story, so adding Twitter is almost a requirement, since so much tech news (be it an official announcement, accidental announcement, rumor, or otherwise) surfaces first on the microblogging site, rather than on blogs or in traditional news publications.Beyond Techmeme itself, Ia4a4m curious to see whether this will change the way reporters cover the tech world. I know Ia4a4m not the only tech writer whoa4a4s kind of obsessed with the site, and who sees links to my stories on Techmeme as an important form of validation &8212' even though those links usually arena4a4t a big source of traffic. If you want to get a tech blogger riled up, ask him about the times he felt overlooked by the sitea4a4s editors. (Techmeme headlines are selected through a mix of automation and human curation, but when you&'re mad about something, ita4a4s easy to convince yourself that therea4a4s a mean editor behind it.)So as reporters keep aiming for Techmeme fame, I imagine they might do more tweeting as theya4a4re covering breaking news or working on big scoops. (Shoot, maybe I should have tweeted about this first.) I also wonder if we might see a little less of the race to publish stories when a company tweets some news. Most bloggers want to publish first, but once something is on Twitter, it&'s even more clear now youa4a4re racing for second place &8212' at least on Techmeme. You can read more about how to get a tweet onto Techmeme in founder Gabe Riveraa4a4s blog post.
When Apple passed Microsoft in market cap this past May, the Microsoft fanboys were out in full force. &''This means nothing.&'' &''Microsoft still makes so much more money than Apple.&'' &''Look at the revenues.&'' Okay, let&'s look at the revenues.Microsoft just posted their earnings for last quarter. The result $16.2 billion in revenue. A very strong number, easily beating what the Street was projecting. But just 10 days ago, Apple posted their revenues for this past quarter. The result there $20.34 billion. Yep.During the last round of earnings results in July, some people had been predicting that Apple would pass Microsoft in revenue (though, for the record, I wasn&'t so sure). But sure enough, Microsoft stayed barely ahead of Apple by about $700 million. But as we noted at the time:It seems quite likely that next quarter Apple will surpass Microsoft in revenue. Assuming that iPhone 4 sales are huge and that the iPad continues to grow, Applea4a4s momentum in revenue is simply too great for Microsoft to keep up with. Apple may or may not hit $20 billion in revenues next quarter (theya4a4re projecting $18 billion, but they always low-ball that number so they can beat it).And here we go. Not only did Apple hit that $20 billion revenue quarter, Microsoft&'s quarter-to-quarter total only went up slightly (around $200 million). And so Apple zoomed right by them.Naturally, it&'s important to note that Microsoft still has a lead in profit a4" $5.41 billion to $4.31 billion a4" but that&'s because one is mainly a software maker (huge margins), while the other is mainly a hardware maker (lower margins). If this trend continues, that will change soon shortly as well. Remember, it&'s the holiday quarter now.Meanwhile, in terms of market cap, Apple now holds a $52 billion lead (remember when there was still some doubt this would happen). And Google is inching closer to Microsoft as well.[photo: flickr/NASA]CrunchBase InformationAppleMicrosoftInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

I am shown product demos in some of the strangest places. On Wednesday afternoon, I found myself in a Starbucks in New York City&'s Grand Central Terminal with Rajnish, one of the founders of Althea Systems. Rajnish was in town from Bangalore and he wanted to show me Shufflr TV, his startup&'s Internet TV application. Shufflr is available right now as a desktop AIR app, but the company is also working on a simplified version for TVs and one for Android phones. In the video above, Rajnish shows me a demo across all three screens (using his laptop in place of a TV, but he did switch to a TV remote as you can see). There was a lot of distractions, including some screaming kids next to us, but Rajnish stayed focussed and powered through the demo.Shufflr lets you browse videos from across the Web, and sorts them by recommended videos, buzz, or what your friends are watching on Facebook and Twitter. You can share, comment on, or bookmark any video. And The AIR app has this slick wall of video effect that would look great on a touchscreen. Videos are pulled from all over the Web, including YouTube, Comedy Central, and Funny Or Die. You can also browse by channel/source or by people. If you start following people, then you start to see the videos they share. It also suggests people with similar tastes.Rajnish also gave me a sneak peak at Shufflr&'s ten-foot UI, which is designed for regular TVs and can be controlled via a remote. It lets you explore different genres and zero in on what you want with related tags. Articles from the Web about particular shows could also be brought up, and it integrates with Flickr to bring your photos to the big screen. The Android app is the simplest of all, showing three different video feeds: friends, recommendations, and queue. The last one will works in conjunction with Shufflr&'s browser plug-in which lets you add any video you come across on the Web to your queue (essentially a video bookmarking system). As with every other Internet TV project out there from Google TV and Apple TV to Boxee, a lovely UI will only get Shufflr so far. It is screaming for more mainstream shows and movies. But the demo is instructive in terms of showing what a three-screen experience might one day look like. Althea Systems recently raised $3 million from Intel Capital.
