LG Optimus Big is LG&39's biggest phone.(Credit:LG)Once again Asia one-ups the rest of the world's mobile industry, this time with the LG Optimus Big. The Optimus Big sports a whopping 4.3-inch display, making it the largest LG phone to date. Its other specs are also quite impressive. It runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor (no word on if it's a Tegra 2) and is equipped with a 5-megapixel rear camera, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, 16GB of internal memory, and an HDMI port. The display has the same technology we saw on the Optimus Black--the Nova display has apparently 700 nits of brightness, making it one of the brightest and most colorful screens out there. The Optimus Big only ships with Android 2.2 and it looks like there's a bit of an interface skin on it. It'll debut in Korea on April 28, but it hasn't been announced whether it'll arrive on U.S. shores.

0 Vote(s)

The mysterious white iPhone 4, in the wild.(Credit:Engadget)Adding extra legitimacy to credible reports that the white version of theiPhone 4 would arrive within the next few weeks, the unit has already popped up at a Vodafone UK retail store, and has even been sold to a customer before stock was pulled.Engadget has a photo from a reader who claims to have purchased the 16GB model of the yet-unreleased device from a Vodafone store in the U.K. Following the sale, the carrier is said to have sent a message to stores telling them to hold the stock until next week. The white version of the iPhone 4 was supposed to launch alongside the black one in 2010, but manufacturing difficulties have pushed its release back nearly a year. Following the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G and 3GS were both available in black and white, though with the iPhone 4, Apple radically changed the manufacturing process and added color to the front of the device as well as the back.According to Engadget, the model number on the white iPhone 4 the customer purchased (MC604B/A) is only slightly different than that on the currently available black version (MC603B/A). This suggests that any major differences between the two phones, other than color, are unlikely. Reports emerged last week that Apple planned to get the long-delayed white iPhone in stores by the end of the month. Apple later confirmed it was nearing its targeted launch timeline of "spring."

0 Vote(s)

Get ready for reliable electricity, and an automated world of electronics, appliances, and buildings, to become the new normal. That's the main message in a report released today by GigaOm Pro and Pike Research.Smart-grid applications in six key areas will change the way people use, buy, manage, and think about electricity, according to the report "Smart Grid Apps: Six Trends That Will Shape Grid Evolution" led by Clint Wheelock, Pike Research founder and managing director. Those electricity-related applications focus on home energy management systems, electric vehicles, distribution automation, smart-grid analytics, building energy management systems (BEMS), and carbon management.Checking the home energy dashboard will become a common household chore. All those home energy management (HEM) and energy information display (EID) tools that are popping up via web-based apps, smartphones, networked TVs, andcar dashboards are not a fad. Most everyone is eventually going to have smart electronics, smart appliances, and smart homes that will communicate energy use and receive instruction remotely, according to Pike Research. It will be normal for people to check what their home is doing in real time in terms of consuming energy, as well as take a long-term view. People will manually change or set long-term preferences for how and when they want their appliances, electronics, and home to consume electricity. While home energy management will become de rigueur, which tools people choose to use to do that, whether it be a wall dashboard in the home or one's smartphone, remains to be seen. For those who buy them, electric vehicles will become the biggest electricity guzzler in a home. That doesn't mean, however, that it will necessarily be the appliance that racks up the electricity bill. Owners will have the ability to set their EVs to charge during off-peak hours, and their home energy system will automatically tell the EV or its charger when it's time to charge. Companies are already making these integrations possible: for instance, Ford EVs and Microsoft Hohm' Ecotality's Blink charger and Cisco's home energy controller' and GE's Watt station charger and the Nucleus home energy management system."The bulk consumption of EVs is also the greatest potential benefit (and threat) to utilities," according to the report. The predicted mass adoption of EVs and resultant charging of EVs at home can help explain why governments and utilities are investing in and escalating the adoption of smart grids and the long overdue upgrade to the electric grid.Long-term blackouts due to things like storms causing trees to fall on power lines will become a quaint memory of old technology. Electricity will be generated, distributed, and consumed with more transparency.Distribution automation will give utilities the ability to automatically and remotely detect the location of circuit faults and implement work-arounds or fixes, dramatically increasing the speed and ease with which electricity is restored in the event of disruption. It will also allow electricity grids to supplement a local load with an intermittent local power source like wind or solar in real-time as it becomes available. It will do so in conjunction with the peak and off-peaks loads of its upper-layer grid source as well, giving the extended grid even more reliability, according to Pike Research.Brown-outs, which often stem from things like mass air conditioner use in summer, will simply just not happen because utilities will have the data to be prepared and manage electricity distribution. Smart-grid analytics will play a major role in managing the massive amount of electricity generation and usage data collected at both the lowest and highest levels, and then used to optimize service. That application is the key to making distribution management of loads and demand response possible. But expect turf wars between engineering, billing, and operations since presently there are many different systems at different levels that "own" the information from smart meters to distribution network management.Commercial customers will have more control over their electricity needs, and be able to track their carbon emissions as part of that management. Large companies will partner with utilities on projects to accommodate their energy needs rather than simply be at their mercy as clients. Large commercial and industrial buildings will begin to take more responsibility and management of energy use and needs. Demand response, essentially the integration of IT and energy management, will not solely remain the domain of utilities as building energy and management systems become the norm. Expect these companies to use a BEMS service provided to them by their existing building services provider like Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or Siemens. IT services giants like Cisco Systems and IBM could also become large players, according to the report.Gone are the days when companies had no idea about the volume of carbon emissions they and their partners spewed.Carbon management systems are mastering the complicated analysis of a company's carbon emissions output and efforts at curtailment, and will stick as a tool despite political disagreement over how carbon emissions in the U.S. should be managed. Carbon analysis and management will become just another type of business process data system offered by IT service companies as part of a company's overall energy management portfolio, according to the report. The six central smart-grid applications represent an inevitable lurch forward toward a more transparent and controlled use of electricity overall. The changes will benefit residential consumers, industrial energy consumers, utilities, enterprises, service providers, and even automotive companies, according to Pike Research.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Warner Bros. Interactive)Does the most iconic fighting franchise of all time come back with a vengeance Or is this one resurrection better left letting the coin credit countdown run out Jeff: If isn't broke, don't fix it. We've all heard the tired cliche, but now more than ever game developers are reaching back to a game's roots as inspiration for franchise reboots. The most recent example is the latest incarnation of Mortal Kombat. The 2D fighting is back, along with the series' genre-defining iconic finale, fatalities. Mortal Kombat is a gift to the loyal MK fan. Anyone who grew up playing one of the classic Mortal Kombat arcade cabinets in the '90s will instantly feel right at home. The nostalgia is laid on thick at times with handfuls of inside jokes, references, and other "-alities." We were also impressed to find that Mortal Kombat packed in a significantly deep story mode. While most fighting games go light on the narrative, MK successfully thickens the experience with in-game cinematics and dialogue beyond the trivial character intros. There are also hours upon hours of challenges here, including new "Test Your" modes including "Might, Sight, Luck," and more, not to mention the new double and triple tag team versus modes. Mortal Kombat (photos) Graphically speaking, the character design in Mortal Kombat is nothing short of spectacular, with each unique fighter sporting a painstaking amount of detail. Speaking of pain, the new Mortal Kombat is more brutal than ever, properly taking advantage of current-generation hardware that delivers each gruesome blow, crunch, splat, and thud. Characters bleed and swell over the course of a match and their wardrobes rip and burn.We were partial to the collection of character-unique X-ray moves that slow the action down to give players a biology lesson or two, showing bones snapping and organs rupturing. (Credit:Warner Bros. Interactive)As we mentioned above, fatalities are back. Instead of flipping through move list printouts, the team at NetherRealm Studios has conveniently listed special moves and fatalities in the pause menu, providing easy access in the game. There's even a fatality trainer mode that lets you practice your favorite "FINISH HIM!" moment without all the pressure. For an in-studio demo of Mortal Kombat that includes two fatalities, tune in to this week's episode of preGame!Dan:It's the game that parents, newscasters, and legislators love to hate, so it's not surprising that Mortal Kombat makes a return appearance every few years (or even more frequently). After all, labeling something as forbidden fruit is the easiest way to attract the game's target demographic of young males. Yet, the latest incarnation of Mortal Kombat seems overly conservative, if anything. Sure, there's plenty of violence and some bloodletting, but other than improved graphics, it's not that much different in concept than the 1992 original. Since then, we've become so jaded by the more realistic violence in games, movies, and TV, that the fatalities in MK seem almost quaint and retro by comparison. Not that I'm complaining' to truly up the stakes, the game would need to move in the direction of "Hostel"-like torture porn, and there's a point beyond which that becomes self-defeating. Like Street Fighter IV and other recent fighting games, the characters here are 3D renderings trapped in a 2D plane' think of the classic satirical/geometric novel "Flatland," but with more beheadings. (Credit:Warner Bros. Interactive)Being only casually familiar with the main characters and lore of the game's universe (but the image of the late Raul Julia as M. Bison is forever burned in my brain), a handful of things kept my attention for at least a few days. ThePS3 version has two important bonuses over theXbox 360 game. On the PS3, you can play in stereoscopic 3D, which definitely adds to the experience in this genre, and that version also has a very cool exclusive character: God of War's Kratos. Finally, I will never forget the triumphant match where, by randomly mashing a few buttons after defeating my opponent, Kratos performed a little-known variation on the infamous Fatality move: my foe was transformed into a kicking, screaming infantalized version of himself, as the screen proudly proclaimed "Babality!"

0 Vote(s)

The cash keeps coming in for former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)Eric Schmidt, Google's former CEO and new executive chairman, has been handed a huge pay raise, according to a document that Google filed yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.According to the filing, Google's Leadership Development and Compensation Committee has granted Schmidt annual compensation of $1.25 million. In addition, he will be allowed to receive a "target bonus of 400 percent of his base salary." In other words, Schmidt could walk away with more than $6 million in cash compensation in a good year.Schmidt's raise is effective as of April 4, the same day he stepped down as CEO of Google and handed the reins over to company co-founder Larry Page. Schmidt, who previously took a salary of $1 per year as Google CEO and board chairman, is now the company's executive chairman.Google's decision to give Schmidt a raise is the company's latest move to heavily compensate him. Earlier this year, the search giant gave Schmidt $100 million in stock and stock options while he was still chief executive. As much compensation as Schmidt has been awarded as of late, it will do little to affect his standing as one of the richest people in the world, considering how much he already has. According to Forbes, Schmidt is worth $7 billion.

0 Vote(s)

But in-store availability of the actual device is very limited.(Credit:Toys R Us)The iPad 2 has been chronically selling out at stores everywhere so news that a new outlet will have the iPad 2 can potentially send shoppers scurrying to that location. But don't expect to waltz into a Toys R Us today and get one. In the Los Angeles area, only select Toys R Us stores got a shipment of iPad 2s. And a store in Tustin, Calif.--a Los Angeles suburb--had already sold out of the iPad 2 by 10 a.m. The store opened at 9 a.m. Best Buy launched an iPad 2 promotion in its weekly flier. Problem is, few stores have any inventory.(Credit:Best Buy)The situation isn't much better at Apple stores. The Manhattan Apple store had no stock on Sunday and a store representative said they generally sell out every day. And Best Buy, despite aggressive promotions (see graphic), has trouble keeping any inventory. Chicago downtown and Thousand Oaks, Calif., stores said they're only taking orders and have none in stock. And a store representative at the Thousand Oaks store apologized for giving the impression that iPads, via a Sunday flier featuring the iPad 2, were in stock, when they weren't.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)Apple this week unveiled the next major version of Final Cut Pro, the company's video-editing software that plays big brother to the more ubiquitousMac pack-in iMovie. The software, which arrives in June, comes off a two-year update hiatus and is a bold step for Apple. It does away with boxes and discs, instead being delivered as a direct download. It also comes in at $700 less than the current version, which is available as part of Apple's pro video-editing suite.Such a cut raises some questions though, like "what's missing" and "is this a downgrade for current Final Cut Studio users" CNET is here to give you the answers with an FAQ.What's newFinal Cut Pro X has a laundry list of new features and tweaks, but the really important thing is that the application is now 64-bit, meaning it can address more RAM. The application also makes use of some of the new low-level system features in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard like Core Animation, OpenCL, and Grand Central Dispatch, which lets the software run on as many processing cores and as much of the graphical processing unit as it can get. As a result, Apple says the software has effectively done away with rendering times, giving editors a way to view changes they've made to content instantaneously. This is managed with a new background-rendering feature that does the work behind the scenes each time a change is made.Final Cut's interface has also been completely reworked, which Apple says puts the focus on the three areas video editors tend to need while making cuts: a preview area, a new media browser, and an editing timeline that's been given an overhaul. Two of those areas: the media library tool and the timeline are where many of the most drastic changes can be found. The media library tool, which is where clips are organized has been redesigned to do some of the heavy lifting with footage. This is something pros have told CNET they thought could be improved from older versions of the software, and it's something Apple has addressed in Final Cut Pro X. The new library lets editors begin edits on media that's being imported, before it's fully transferred. And as footage is being imported, it can analyze shots to help editors sort them out, including tools that can tell what type of shot it is (close, medium, wide), and if there are people in it. It can also run color management and stabilize video if it's shaky. To add to this, footage that's been imported can be organized with range-based keywording, which lets users apply tags to specific, or entire clips to search and pull out later. On the timeline side, Apple has tweaked the connection between audio and video tracks with something it's calling "Clip Connections." This binds secondary audio tracks to the primary audio tracks that are attached to footage. This way, if it's dragged to another part of the timeline, it won't lose the secondary audio that was added after the fact. Joining that is a feature Apple calls "Magnetic Timeline" which makes sure that these connected items that are dragged around on the timeline do not collide with one another. To make specific clusters of edits less unwieldy, Apple has added a timeline feature called "Compound Clip" that can group together audio, video, transitions, and titles into single clips. These can be treated just like a finished clip, but de-clutter the timeline. And because it's non-destructive, editors can go in and make changes to something in this cluster any time they want, then re-compound it to save space. Other changes made to the edit side include an inline precision editor, which lets users adjust where cuts have been made on clips, right on the timeline. This has been set up so if you realize you want an extra second or two from a clip, you don't have to go back and re-find it from your library, cut out one that's slightly longer, and switch it out. You can just dip into that source clip from the timeline, extend it and be done. Another edit feature, called "Auditions" lets users do A-B testing on two variations of an edit to see what each one would look like, without having to redo the work to re-create it. In its presentation, Apple said these were just a few of the new features that are part of the new software, with more to be unveiled closer to its release in June. What's it look like compared with the current Final Cut ProHere's Final Cut Pro 7:(Credit:Apple)And Final Cut Pro X:(Credit:Apple )OK, those are neat pictures, but this is a video application, I want to see it in action. Is there a video somewhereThere is. As spotted by MacRumors, pro film group Les Machineurs was there and filmed Apple's presentation. It's split up into two parts with a small break in between. What's missing is the initial part of the presentation where Apple spells out some of its customer satisfaction metrics and that it's got more than 2 million licensed Final Cut Pro users. If you're looking for the hands-on demos with the software, skip to part two, which has Apple's chief architect of video applications, Randy Ubillos going over some of the new features.Part one: Part two: (Credit:Apple)How does this compare with Final Cut StudioThe big difference here is that this is one application, versus Final Cut Studio's six. That suite includes Final Cut Pro along with Motion, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Color. That said, there are features you'd find in Soundtrack Pro and Color that have been built into Final Cut Pro X. But that may not be enough for pros, who were using the authoring tools in DVD Studio Pro to make salable products with their work, or movie makers using Motion to do composite work. So does that mean those applications aren't making the jump to be a part of the Final Cut Pro X universe Following the presentation an Apple representative told The Loop that "today was just a sneak peak of Final Cut Pro," and to "stay tuned." How does this compare with iMovieFinal Cut Pro X is a much more advanced piece of editing software with many more bells and whistles than iMovie. That said, several features that started out in iMovie have made their way over to Final Cut Pro X, such as skimming previews for clips, identification for types of shots and if people are in them, as well as some of the visual aesthetics. The bottom line is that if you're an iMovie user who wants a little more, Apple is going for the same up-sell as it's had with Final Cut Express. The big difference is that this is now being positioned as its top of the line editor at about $100 premium of what Express costs. What does this mean for Final Cut ExpressApple has stayed mum on if Final Cut Express has been shelved. However comments made about the $199, middle-of-the-road between iMovie and Final Cut Studio at the end of Apple's presentation strongly suggest it's being replaced by the lower-priced Final Cut Pro X once the software is released. From Apple's Richard Townhill, who is the director of pro video product marketing:"Lastly perhaps, we've had a couple of different flavors. We've had upgrade pricing, we've had Final Cut Express, we've had Final Cut Studio. So we decided we really wanted to do away with that. We wanted to greatly simplify the pricing structure and make it very easy for you if you decided that you wanted to get a copy of Final Cut Pro. So we've decided to make it available for the amazing price of $299."With that said, Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro 6 (which pre-dated the current version of Final Cut Pro) remain two of the the last versions in the Final Cut family that can run on PowerPC hardware, providing those with older computers a way to edit using Final Cut. I already have Final Cut Pro, do I still have to pay $299Yes. Unlike past versions where a new version means previous users can pay a smaller amount with an upgrade price, everyone pays $299 for Final Cut Pro X.One thing to keep in mind is that the previous upgrade price for Final Cut Studio upgrades was also $299, so its no more than it used to be. It can be argued that users are getting less included if Apple does not ship it with a comparable feature set with what some of the other studio tools can do.(Credit:Apple)Can I buy this in storesNo, Apple has only said that it's offering Final Cut Pro X as a paid download through its Mac App Store. On the plus side that means there are no more worries about punching in serial numbers or losing physical media since it can be re-downloaded. Can my computer run thisApple has not released hardware requirements, but it's making use of many OS X 10.6 specific features that will require Snow Leopard, specifically Grand Central Dispatch. The current version of Final Cut Pro requires that users are running Mac OS X version 10.5.6 or later. What's up with the nameSimilar to Mac OS X, the X is a Roman numeral, meaning it's said like "Final Cut Pro ten." But don't be confused, this isn't actually the 10th iteration of the software. The last version of the software was version 7, technically making this version 8. Version 8 and 9 didn't disappear per se. Apple just seems to have followed a similar naming convention to what it did in making the jump from QuickTime 7 to QuickTime X in Leopard to Snow Leopard. Apple also has a history of doing this with its iLife apps, so it's odd, but not unusual.Any other questions Send them our way and we'll try to get them answered for you.

0 Vote(s)

The AT&amp'TiPhone 4 drops more calls than Verizon's model, yet customers of both carriers seem about equally satisifed, according to a ChangeWave Research study released yesterday.Questioning a total of 4,068 mobile phone users in a survey completed March 28, ChangeWave found that 82 percent of the Verizon Wireless iPhone 4 owners polled and 80 percent of those using AT&amp'T's iPhone 4 said they were very satisified overall. The Verizon iPhone has been on the market since February, when it ended AT&T's long run of exclusivity for the Apple gadget. But aside from the neck-and-neck satisfaction levels, Verizon holds in the upper hand in other key ways.(Credit:ChangeWave Research)Among iPhone 4 users, Verizon scored the fewest dropped calls, with those surveyed reporting on average only 1.8 percent of all calls dropped over the past 90 days. That compared with AT&amp'T iPhone 4 owners who said that on average 4.8 percent of all their calls were dropped over the same period. The survey, which also looked at T-Mobile and Sprint, found that Verizon led the pack overall in the lowest number of dropped calls across the industry. Verizon mobile phone customers in general reported that on average only 1.4 percent of their calls dropped over the past 90 days. T-Mobile took second place with 2.3 percent dropped calls, followed by Sprint with 2.7 percent. That again left AT&amp'T to bring up the rear, with its mobile phone subscribers pointing to a average of 4.6 percent of all calls dropped over the past 90 days.(Credit:ChangeWave Research)Dropped calls have plagued AT&amp'T and its customers for a number of years, contributing to the carrier's often poor grades for customer satisfaction. In response, the company has made some effort in recent years to strengthen the performance and reliability of its network. In a survey from December, ChangeWave discovered that AT&amp'T had improved its level of dropped calls from a high of 6 percent last September. The current survey, which included 1,264 AT&amp'T customers, found that the dropped call rate had improved further, albeit by only a tenth of a percentage point. At the same time, the number of dropped calls among the 1,283 Verizon customers included in the survey has shrunk to its lowest level ever seen by ChangeWave.Verizon also outscored AT&amp'T with future iPhone owners. Among those who plan to buy an iPhone 4 down the road, 46 percent said they'll go with Verizon, while only 27 percent are eyeing AT&amp'T.

0 Vote(s)

Anxiety over Japan's quake-crippled nuclear reactors has triggered calls from lawmakers and activists for review of U.S. energy policy and for brakes on expansion of domestic nuclear power.President Barack Obama has urged expansion of nuclear power to help meet the country's energy demands, lower its dependence on imported fossil fuels and reduce its climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions. But as engineers in Japan tried yesterday to avert a meltdown at three nuclear reactors following Friday's massive earthquake, some U.S. policy makers were re-evaluating their take on nuclear energy even as the industry itself offered assurances about the safety of new and existing plants."I don't want to stop the building of nuclear power plants," independent Senator Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said on the CBS television's "Face the Nation."The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.(Credit:CBS News video/Screenshot by Jonathan Skillings, CNET)"But I think we've got to kind of quietly put, quickly put, the brakes on until we can absorb what has happened in Japan as a result of the earthquake and the tsunami and then see what more, if anything, we can demand of the new power plants that are coming on line," Lieberman added.Since the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, many Americans have harbored concerns about nuclear power's safety. Controversy has also dogged the nuclear power industry due to its radioactive waste, which is now stored on site at reactor locations around the country. The Nuclear Energy Institute, which represents the industry in Washington, said regulators already are reviewing license applications for 20 reactors that would be built over the next 15 to 20 years. Four to eight new reactors are slated to begin operating between 2016 to 2020, spokesman Steven Kerekes said."It is a fairly measured build-out program," he said. "We feel it would be premature at this point to draw any conclusions from the tragic events in Japan relative to the U.S. program."In February 2010, Obama announced $8.3 billion in loan guarantees to build the first U.S. nuclear power plant in nearly three decades. The backing helps Southern Co build two reactors at a plant in the U.S. state of Georgia. The White House said it was watching the events in Japan for lessons about nuclear safety but indicated that no major policy changes were imminent."Information is still coming in about the events unfolding in Japan, but the administration is committed to learning from them and ensuring that nuclear energy is produced safely and responsibly here in the U.S.," White House spokesman Clark Stevens said."The president believes that meeting our energy needs means relying on a diverse set of energy sources that includes renewables like wind and solar, natural gas, clean coal and nuclear power." Environmentalists said Japan's example should be a wake-up call for Obama to reconsider his policies."Obama's request for additional loan guarantees for new nuclear reactor projects is now revealed to be a questionable approach given the inherent safety risks of nuclear reactors and resulting radioactive waste," said Tom Clements of environmental group Friends of the Earth."Congress should deny any additional funding," he said. The group was opposed to the expansion of nuclear power even before the Japan disaster. Both Democrats and Republicans have embraced expanding nuclear power as a way to generate electricity and jobs. The recent spike in gasoline prices as well as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have put a renewed focus on revamping U.S. energy policies to find more sources of fuel.Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, speaking on "Fox News Sunday," urged a cautious approach."I don't think right after a major environmental catastrophe is a very good time to be making American domestic policy. I think we ought to just concentrate on helping the Japanese in any way that we can," McConnell said.Lieberman noted there are 104 nuclear power plants in the United States, and that about 23 of them are built according to designs similar to the nuclear power plants in Japan that are now the focus of the world's concern.Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited.
(Credit:Next New Networks)Video host YouTube today announced that it has acquired Web video production company Next New Networks.YouTube says the newly bought production team will be on the forefront of testing new YouTube technologies, as well as acting as an incubator for up and coming video talent."Within YouTube, Next New Networks will be a laboratory for experimentation and innovation with the team working in a hands on way with a wide variety of content partners and emerging talent to help them succeed on YouTube," Tom Pickett, YouTube's director of Global Content Operations, wrote on a company blog."We are thrilled with the new capability the team brings and the positive impact it will have making our YouTube partners more successful," he continued.Along with the acquisition news, Pickett also outlined the company's new "YouTube Next" program, which he described as "a new team tasked with super-charging creator development and accelerating partner growth and success." Those efforts, Pickett said, included outreach programs like meet-ups and community events alongside training and education programs.Reports that YouTube was eyeing Next New Networks as an acquisition target were first reported by The New York Timesin December, though new tidbits on the sale had all but dried up since then. Pricing details of the deal have not been disclosed.Other Google acquisitions that have been YouTube-related include annotations tool Omnisio in 2008, online video platform Episodic in April of last year, and sentiment analysis and recommendation engine Fflick just last month. Out of all those, this is by far one of the boldest moves in turning YouTube into an original content creator of its own, something competitors like Microsoft are said to be cooking up to challenge existing TV content networks for viewership on Internet-connected TVs and set top boxes.

0 Vote(s)

AT&T customers can now choose postpaid data plans for theirtablet PCs.Starting today, AT&T said, customers can opt to pay $14.99 for 250MB of monthly data or $25 for 2GB of monthly data. The postpaid option will show up on the person's monthly wireless bill after the data is used. Prepaid plans, which feature the same price and data allotments, are charged on a person's credit card prior to their use. Both the postpaid and prepaid plans are month-to-month, meaning that customers have no long-term contract. The only difference, apparently, between the two types of plans is the charge for exceeding the data limit. Under the postpaid plan, those who exceed 2GB will be charged another $10 per 1GB of extra data. Under the prepaid plan, customers who exceed 2GB can choose to buy an additional 2GB for $25.AT&T's new option is available for all tablets, including theiPad 2, which will launch March 11.To jump-start the new postpaid option, AT&T is offering customers their first month free when they activate a new 2GB postpaid plan.

0 Vote(s)

Lance a locust this September. (Credit:GameSpot)It may be one of the jewels in Microsoft's 2011 lineup, but Gears of War 3 has had a tumultuous time on the road to release. The game's unveiling was set to take place on talk show "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" but was delayed, though not before the game's release date was reportedly leaked onXbox Live. Shortly after the "Late Night" showing, Microsoft confirmed that the game would be landing in April, but then had to renege on its initial promise and delay the game to a holiday 2011 release. Today, Microsoft announced a new worldwide release date for Gears of War 3 of September 20. This brings territories such as Japan, Australia, and Europe in line with the U.S., which was originally going to get the game first when it was slated for an April release date. Microsoft has also named some of the maps and weapons that are due to appear in the game when it lands in September.
Though more online stores have been crowding the mobile app market, Apple remains by far the app-store leader, according to data out today from IHS, which recently acquired technology researcher iSuppli. For 2010, Apple took in $1.78 billion in worldwide sales from its App Store, a leap of 132 percent from $769 million in 2009. And while it lost market share to some of its mobile rivals, Apple still captured 82.7 percent of the app store market last year, down from 92.8 percent the prior year. One factor that boosted Apple's mobile app sales in 2010 was the debut of theiPad. AlthoughiPhone users still outnumber those who own Apple's populartablet, iPad apps on average cost more than those designed for the iPhone, contributing a healthy percentage of sales. By 2014, about 50 percent of Apple's App Store sales in the U.S. will come from the iPad, compared to just under 20 percent last year, forecasts IHS. "In terms of mobile application stores, Apple remains far ahead of the competition, with the other stores so far unable to replicate Apple's success in generating revenue from users," Jack Kent, an IHS mobile media analyst, said in a statement. "Apple, in contrast, has been able to maintain advantage by leveraging its tightly controlled ecosystem--combining compelling hardware and content with the capability to offer consumers a trusted, integrated, and simple billing service via iTunes." Despite Apple's dominance, other app stores were able to make a dent in the market last year. Though still in fourth place behind Research In Motion's BlackBerry App World and Nokia's Ovi Store, Google's Android Market saw the greatest surge in revenue growth. Sales for the Android Market rose 861.5 percent last year, giving Google a 4.7 percent cut of the market, up from just 1.3 percent in 2009. In third place, the Ovi Store also witnessed strong sales growth, with revenue increasing by 719.4 percent to give it a 4.9 percent share of the mobile app market. BlackBerry App World hung onto its Number 2 spot with revenue rising by 360.3 percent last year, boosting its market share to 7.7 percent from 4.3 percent in 2009. (Credit:IHS) Overall sales in the mobile app store market climbed by 160.2 percent last year to reach $2.2 billion, up from $828 million in 2009. Games proved to be the most popular type of app, responsible for 52.2 percent of all mobile app store sales in 2010. Looking forward, IHS expects the global market for mobile apps to rise by another 81.5 percent this year, reaching $3.9 billion in total sales. The Android Market and other rival stores are likely to further slice away at Apple's leading share, but the iPhone maker will still take home at least half of all sales generated from the app store market through 2014.

0 Vote(s)

Halogens in the shape of a traditional bulb can be about 20 percent more efficient than incandescent lighting.(Credit:General Electric )You can include halogens to the list of lights that can replace traditional incandescent bulbs. General Electric on Monday announced a line of halogen lights, which are available now, in the shape of the familiar incandescent which up to 22 percent more energy efficient. A 2007 law created mandated efficiency levels for home lighting, which is expected to lead to fewer incandescent bulbs, starting with the 100-watt incandescent next year. Governments in other countries have set similar lighting efficiency requirements, which has led to more options for efficient lighting.Compact florescents and large LED bulbs are expected to meet the mandated efficiency levels. Halogens for general lighting or spotlights will comply with U.S. and global efficiency laws as well, GE said. It sells two-packs of the halogens bulbs for between $4 and $7.Halogen is an incandescent technology which offers precise dimming and crisp light, said John Strainic, global product general manager of GE Lighting in a statement.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)There's no doubt that Google's Android mobile operating system has exploded from its first foray in October 2008 to become--for many--the everyman's smartphone OS. Google's breakneck development speed has paid off since it acquired Android, then a start-up, in 2005. The mature Android now accounts for 53 percent of smartphone sales as of the final quarter of 2010, according to research from Canalys--and there's no slowdown in sight.&nbsp' Despite an earlier promise that Android updates would be reduced from about twice per year to once per year, Google has recently released Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and thetablet-specific Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), and hinted at the next treat in its enticing alphabet of releases, Ice Cream Sandwich. Meanwhile, many people are still waiting to see their Android 2.2 (Froyo) updates, some of which will no longer arrive. Here's a look at milestones in Google's Android operating system, from its humble beginnings to its current ambitions in tablet domination.mytable body {font: normal 11px auto "Trebuchet MS", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'color: 4f6b72'background: E6EAE9'}mytable a {color: c75f3e'}mytable {width: 620px'padding: 0'margin: 0'}mytable th {font: bold 13px "Trebuchet MS", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'color: 4f6b72'border-right: 1px solid C1DAD7'border-bottom: 1px solid C1DAD7'border-top: 1px solid C1DAD7'letter-spacing: 2px'text-transform: uppercase'text-align: center'vertical-align:middle'padding: 6px 6px 6px 12px'background: CAE8EA'}mytable .nobg tbody { border-top:none'}mytable td {border-right: 1px solid C1DAD7'border-bottom: 1px solid C1DAD7'background: E6EAE9'padding: 6px 6px 6px 12px'color: 4f6b72'}mytable th.spec {border-left: 1px solid C1DAD7'border-top: 0'background: fff'font: bold 11px "Trebuchet MS", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'}Android versionSDK release*Notable updates1.0 (G1)February 2008GPS and Bluetooth (but not stereo Bluetooth)MultitaskingTight integration with Google services like Gmail, Google Maps (with Street View), and Google CalendarApps: Amazon MP3 Store' YouTubeAndroid Market (about 35 apps at launch)No Microsoft Exchange Server' no camcorder1.5 (Cupcake) April 2009Universal search box (search had been limited to the Web)Revamped Android Market: Browsing categories (Apps, Games, Downloads) and filters (Top Free, Top Paid, Just In)Camera: Toggle between camera and video modes' integrated photo gallery and camera with bulk photo deletingSDK expands support for gestures, voice-to-text1.6 (Donut)September 2009Virtual, onscreen keyboardCamcorder mode for recording (and watching) videoStereo BluetoothHome screen widgets and foldersCopy/paste and search within the browserDirect upload to YouTube and Picasa2.0 (Eclair)October 2009Multiple user accountsExchange support' universal e-mail inboxQuick Contact pop-up widget to launch communications with friends in the address bookSearch saved SMS and MMS messagesCamera improvements include support for flash and digital zoomBluetooth 2.1Keyboard improvements: Adaptive dictionary that includes contact names in suggestions2.1 (Eclair, second helping)January 2010Live Wallpaper' five home screensSpeech-to-text added to any text field' microphone icon for voice dictation in e-mails, texts, and so on2.2 (Froyo)May 2010Multiple user accountsSpeedier OSUSB tethering and hot-spot supportAndroid Market update: Batch and automatic updates' installing apps to the SD cardAdobe Flash 10.1File uploading in the browserImproved Microsoft Exchange support: Security policies, global address lookup, calendar sync, remote wipeBluetooth support for voice dialing and contact sharing2.3 (Gingerbread)December 2000Redesigned copy/pasteWebM video compression supportNFC (near field communication) supportSwitch to front-facing camera from camera appVirtual keyboard shortcuts3.0 (Honeycomb)Preview SDK 20113D graphics supportSide-by-side browser tabs' private browsingDual-pane modes for address book, e-mailRedesigned UI includes program thumbnailsVideo chatting with Google TalkFull-screen-mode photo galleryBluetooth tethering* We list the date of the SDK release rather than the over-the-air (OTA) update timeline since OTA release dates vary by carrier and handset model.Gingerbread (Android 2.3) The Nexus S is the only Android phone to currently run on Gingerbread. So far the tablet optimization impresses, especially when held up against other Android tablets running Android 2.2.Google made its heavy investment in Honeycomb evident at its special demo event this month. There, The Goog showed off two-way video chatting with Google Chat and a new interactive app called Google Body that takes a Google Earth approach to human anatomy. CNET will have much more on Honeycomb when we get the Xoom in-house.Ice Cream Sandwich (Android .) There isn't much known about Google's next Android release, not even a confirmation of the name. We're unsure if Ice Cream Sandwich will pick up where Gingerbread left off, as Android 2.4, or if it will follow in Honeycomb's footsteps as Android 3.1. It could roll out as soon as Google's annual I/O conference this May.What about Google Music Speaking of I/O, we're also waiting for Google's Android Market music store to rival iTunes, something we've been looking out for since Google acquired Simplify Media. At this point, it's more probable we'll see Google Music announced and demoed there than at another special event like the Honeycomb demo. Watch out, Apple. It's getting to be a Google World.Update, February 7, 2011: Gingerbread and Honeycomb added.

0 Vote(s)

RIM yesterday reiterated that it's unable to provide the Indian government with the means to access secure e-mails on its enterprise network, despite a looming deadline.Robert Crow, Research In Motion's vice president for Industry, Government and University, repeated the company's familiar position. Speaking to reporters yesterday in New Delhi, Crow said that RIM does not have the ability to turn over the keys to the encrypted data flowing over its BlackBerry Enterprise Server because those keys are held by its corporate customers.Despite promises to India that it would offer a permanent solution by January 31, Crow said that "there is no possibility of us providing any kind of a solution. There is no solution, there are no keys to be handed," according to Reuters.Earlier this month, RIM had given Indian officials the ability to monitor its consumer messaging services, which include BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS) e-mail. But that access does not extend to the company's Enterprise Server, which it sees as a type of secure virtual private network (VPN) for its business customers.RIM has been facing challenges by India as well as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, all of whom have been demanding access to its secure customer data for national security reasons. The nations see such access as a necessary tool in their fight against terrorists and have all at one time threatened bans against the BlackBerry service unless RIM complies. The company narrowly averted a ban on BlackBerry services in India in October by offering an interim solution and promising a permanent one by January 31. Last year, RIM faced potential bans from the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but it was able to work out agreements with those two nations that allowed its services to continue. Though RIM hasn't revealed how it averted those bans, some reports say the company was able to work around the issue by setting up local BlackBerry servers.Crow said that the overall problem extends beyond just the BlackBerry network. This is not an issue unique to BlackBerry. BlackBerry represents a very small fraction of the total population of VPN in India," he said, according to the AFP news service.India has also been after Google and Skype to allow access to their services as well, asking them to install local servers for the purpose of monitoring e-mail and messaging.Crow has been meeting with Indian officials from security agencies and the country's ministry to discuss the issue and said that further meetings are planned during his current visit, Reuters reported.

0 Vote(s)

Androids in orbit, man.(Credit:Matt Hickey/CNET)British researchers plan to launch an android into orbit--not the C-3PO and R2-D2 kind, but an Android smartphone. It's not the first attempt to launch an Android phone into space, but it's the first that's aiming to make a smartphone the brain for an orbital satellite. The STRaND-1 (Surrey Training, Research and Nanosatellite Demonstrator) is being made from advanced and off-the-shelf components by Surrey Satellite Technology, a spinoff of the University of Surrey, and the university's Surrey Space Centre. The project has a few stated goals. The first is to see if a smartphone can function in the hostile environment that is space. It will live in a protective case, and a computer on the satellite will put the phone through a number of tests to determine which components (sensors, video cameras, GPS systems, Wi-Fi radios, and so on) do and don't work in orbit. If enough parts of the handset pass muster, the custom software will be tested next. If that works as planned, the smartphone will be used to operate parts of the satellite. The phone's cellular radio won't be used, as there are no cell towers in space (yet). Instead, the team will communicate with the phone using the satellite radio technology already in place. That said, some of the phone's other systems--processor, RAM, storage, and camera, just to name a few--will be used.A camera will likely be outfitted so the controllers on the ground can see the screen. This will allow the scienticians to control the phone with their own custom software packages. The ability to load custom software payloads and its open-source nature is the reason why Android was chosen as the first phone OS for the stars. The satellite will rely on its own GPS, guidance, and thrusters, but will use the phone as a backup to the main computer. Then, if all goes well, it will take over as the main "brain" and control the satellite's functions."If a smartphone can be proved to work in space, it opens up lots of new technologies to a multitude of people and companies for space who usually can't afford it. It's a real game-changer for the industry," said Chris Bridges, STRaND-1's lead researcher. If all works out, the research could lead to reduced costs and sizes of future satellites, which to some is backward thinking. While in the past, technology for the space program has lead to innovations in consumer technology, this is just the opposite. And that is why it's cool.Smartphone makers, of course, have been in a race for years trying to cram more and more advanced technology into smaller and smaller handsets. Smartphones are essentially pocket-sized computers, though fairly advanced. The latest batches have gigahertz-and-faster processors, which make them more powerful than some laptops people were buying just a few years ago.Couple that with the massive amounts of flash storage, cameras, GPS receivers, radios, and USB ports, in addition to the ability to run advanced software, and suddenly they become attractive alternatives to the custom computers most satellites use as a brain.

0 Vote(s)

Apple is reportedly switching up the wireless chipset used in future versions of both the iPad and iPhone.(Credit:iFixit)Is Apple moving to a new wireless chipset supplier for the nextiPad andiPhone An unnamed but "reliable" source is quoted by Engadget today saying that Apple is going to ditch the current Infineon chipsets used in both devices and move to Qualcomm instead. The report seems entirely plausible.Verizon already let it slip that it's going to have an iPad that runs on its network. It's very likely that will be for its CDMA network, and not LTE. The current iPad model only works on GSM networks. Apple probably doesn't want to have to make two different iPads the way it's currently making two different models of iPhone (one with GSM chips for AT&T et al., and one with CDMA for Verizon and perhaps other future carrier partners), so switching to a chipset that allows the device to connect to both networks would be smart. Qualcomm has that, or is going to, very soon. It's long been rumored Apple would eventually start shipping a dual-mode iPhone--a report that the iPhone 5 would work on GSM and CDMA networks hit back in October--so going that way with both of its flagship mobile products makes a lot of sense.Engadget also notes that while the next iPad won't have a USB port, it will have an SD card slot, and has some images of what it would look like.

0 Vote(s)

Advanced Micro Devices' chip strategy over the past several years had some flaws that if not fatal, at least cast some doubt on how the chipmaker would fare in a quickly changing competitive landscape. AMD&39's smartphone-centric Imageon chip technology was sold to Qualcomm.(Credit:AMD)Though no one outside of AMD's board may ever fully know why CEO Dirk Meyer was fired today, there were important markets the chipmaker had essentially abdicated. The most salient beingtablets and high-end smartphones. In 2008, AMD appeared well situated to make a foray into smartphones and later tablets (and seemed ahead of Intel and Nvidia in this market segment). But AMD sold that Imageon technology--which it got with the purchase of graphic chips supplier ATI--to cell phone chip giant Qualcomm in January 2009. And Meyer made some high-profile comments in October of last year, stating in no uncertain terms that the tablet market was not a priority. "Frankly, we're still so small in the notebook market that it doesn't make sense for us to turn R&D dollar spending toward the tablet market yet. We'll start doing that when the market is big enough," he said during an earnings call. His point was ostensibly a rational one: the tablet market isn't big enough today to justify AMD's focus. But this thinking could have dire consequences going forward if there's a rush to tablets, hybrid devices (e.g., tablets with slider keyboards), and large, high-end smartphones. In short, AMD's strategy has been too centered on PCs, a mature market where Intel controls the most lucrative segments. Its biggest rival, Nvidia, on the other hand, has set it sights squarely on tablets and high-end smartphones for the last couple of years and had a strong presence atCES. Some of Motorola's highest-profile smartphone and tablet products this year, for example, will use Nvidia's ARM processors. Though AMD's Fusion, aka "Brazos," chips could be used in larger tablets, they're not optimized for that segment like Nvidia's ARM chips are. Even Intel, which is facing its own challenges in smartphones and tablets, has two Atom chip variants (Oak Trail and Moorestown) that can be used in tablets today. At CES, AMD did gain some traction in the market segment just above Netbooks--mostly small laptops with 11-inch and 12-inch screens. Sony stated at CES that it was quitting the Intel-Atom-based Netbook market in favor of small laptops based on AMD's Fusion processors, and Hewlett-Packard announced Fusion-based designs. Again, there may be other reasons that Meyer was fired, but it's nevertheless worth noting that AMD was not a force in two promising chip markets.

0 Vote(s)

LaCie&39's FastKey USB drive is the first USB 3.0 solid-state portable storage solution that is the size of a large thumb drive.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)What do you get when you put solid-state storage, USB 3.0 connectivity, and a thumb-size design together Well, you'll get LaCie's FastKey.This is a unique portable storage solution that uses the fastest technology in terms of storage type (solid state) and peripheral connectivity (USB 3.0). On top of that, the device is about the size of a large thumb drive but offers up to 120GB of storage space. Unfortunately, for the quite obvious reasons stated above (namely is high-end functionality), it isn't cheap' the LaCie FastKey costs $475 for the 120GB version. The drive is also available in 60GB and 30GB capacities for $250 and $150, respectively. You pay for what you get, however, as the FastKey really lives up to its name. It's one of the fastest USB 3.0 portable drives we've ever seen. If compared against any thumb drive on the market, it would be by far the fastest ever made. The FastKey also supports AES 256-bit encryption, which allows for creating a secure partition that requires a password to access. This is a great feature to keep your data safe in case of loss or theft. And judging from the look of the device, you might create quite a bit of temptation when you show it to people. The good thing is, thanks to the size, it's easy to keep it hidden from admiring eyes. For more information on this currently one-of-a-kind portable storage solution, check out the full review.

0 Vote(s)

Google's newest test versions of Chrome are equipped with a faster JavaScript engine, an increasingly important browser component for running Web-based programs. The result is faster-loading pages, more powerful Web applications, and another round in the browser performance competition with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla'sFirefox, Apple'sSafari, and Opera.Chrome Canary uses the new Crankshaft version of Google&39's JavaScript engine. On Mozilla&39's Kraken test, where shorter bars are better, it wins handily over the current stable version of Chrome. This and other tests are on a Dell Studio XPS 16 with a 1.73GHz Intel Q820 Core i7 processor and 6GB of memory.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)The new JavaScript engine works better on Google&39's V8 benchmark, too.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)On the SunSpider test, now in disfavor in some circles for being obsolete, the two browsers are tied.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)Chrome's browser engine, called V8, is being upgraded to version 3, called Crankshaft. It uses a technique called adaptive compilation that translates JavaScript into native instructions for a processor and then concentrates more energy on improving the parts of the code used most often, Google said."Crankshaft uses adaptive compilation to improve both start-up time and peak performance. The idea is to heavily optimize code that is frequently executed and not waste time optimizing code that is not," Google programmers Kevin Millikin and Florian Schneider said yesterday in a company blog post. The result: "pages that contain significant amounts of JavaScript code" load on average 12 percent faster, the programmers said. And when it comes to how fast JavaScript programs run once they're loaded, they said, "this is the biggest performance improvement since we launched Chrome in 2008."JavaScript has become such a competitive feature among browsers that they're using brand names. Up against V8 is Microsoft's Chakra, debuting in IE9' Apple's Nitro' Opera's Carakan' and Mozilla's JaegerMonkey, debuting in Firefox 4.JavaScript performance is important, but it's only one facet of browser quality. Others include support for new features such as WebGL's 3D graphics' the ability to accelerate display of graphics and text' privacy and security' how fast it can handle the increasingly important CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) technology for formatting' and performance of interacting with a Web page's DOM--or document object model, the hierarchical description of its elements. All these areas and more are getting ever more attention. And if it wasn't clear what's at stake, look no further than Google's Chrome OS and Chrome Web Store. The first is a browser-based operating system that runs Web apps only' the second is a distribution mechanism to find and buy those apps. There are plenty of uncertainties about how well Google will succeed in its ambition to transform the Web into a foundation for applications, not just static Web sites. But there are some things that aren't so unclear: more and more of people's work and personal life is being spent doing things within a browser. That trend is enabled by better performance and, at the same time, encourages even more advances. The programmers specifically pointed to improvements in Gmail loading times, which I've found excruciatingly slow in recent months. However, my not-terribly-reliable stopwatch tests showed Crankshaft actually slower with that site: 2.4 seconds to load on an average of five runs loading Gmail on Chrome Canary 10.0.603.3 compared with 2.1 seconds for the newest stable version of Chrome, Chrome 8.0.552.215. Given the variability in the results (less than 2 seconds to more than 3), though, I wouldn't read too much into that result.Of course, there are plenty of benchmarks for broader if more more artificial tests of JavaScript performance: Mozilla's Kraken (version 1.0), Google's V8 Benchmark (version 6), and WebKit's SunSpider (version 0.9.1).Here, Crankshift definitely shows a difference, except on the SunSpider test whose influence has waned as browser makers' advancements have rendered it out of date. Bear in mind, though, that this was a test just on a single machine, a quad-core Dell Studio XPS 16 with 6GB of memory and that other machines will produce different results.Browser benchmarks are a thorny issue. It's always tough to represent the full breadth of computing challenges in a single convenient test, and there's always the risk that engineers will design products for good benchmark scores even when the approach has little or no bearing on real-world work. Indeed, Firefox leveled benchmark engineering charges at Microsoft with IE9.Chrome is gaining in popularity, on the verge of 10 percent of browser usage on the Web today for third place after IE and Firefox. It took years and a somewhat subversive effort to convince Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt that the company should release a browser, but it's clearly a force to be reckoned with on the Net.

0 Vote(s)

But there's a new beasty that will haunt my dreams tonight: the multijoint pork de-boning robot. It's an articulated arm with a razor-sharp knife at the end. It's called the HAMDAS-R, and it's made by Japan's Mayekawa Electric. The thing is programmed with one purpose: separating pork flesh from thigh bone, a task that's supposed to be tough for humans. It just won the top prize in the small business and venture category at the 4th Robot Awards sponsored by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. This HAMDAS-R system has achieved a higher yield of deboned pork than skilled workers do, according to Mayekawa. It's smart enough to change its instructions on-the-fly to account for different meat forms and bone sizes, which means it autonomously learns the best way to cut up formerly living things. That means it could very easily make work of a human, like me, even if it's never been programmed to. See why I'm so scaredAnd why yes, we do have a video of the monstrosity in action.
Apple'siPhone 4 and Google's freshly minted Nexus S share a critical core component inside, underscoring Samsung's presence in some of the most popular devices on the market and how it is triangulates relationships between its own products and it chip customers. Google&39's Nexus S has a contoured 4-inch screen.(Credit:Google)Google makes no bones about what's inside its slick Samsung-manufactured Nexus S: a 1GHz "Hummingbird" processor. That's a close cousin of--if not identical in many respects to--the processor inside of Apple's A4 system-on-a-chip, as a TechInsights analysis (PDF) revealed earlier this year. "It's common in the electronics industry for competitors to get chips from the same source," said Joe Byrne, an analyst The Linley Group. "But it is somewhat of an odd situation for Samsung to develop chips and make their own systems (products). It does put them in a weird position," he said. Byrne continued. "The Samsung-Apple deal is odd in that a system company (Apple) is doing a custom chip with a semiconductor supplier--that is, Samsung--that also has a system business. There's a potential triangle there." The plot thickens when the new Samsung Galaxy Tab is added to the mix. That tablet has emerged as the principal competitor--with 1 million units sold in about two months--toApple's iPad. Samsung's Galaxy Tab uses the same--or similar--processor as the iPhone 4 and Nexus S. Samsung is obviously a large company with different arms that have competing interests. And, in that sense, it's not unlike Intel. Samsung is doing, however, what Intel, on principal, has avoided: making branded consumer systems and also supplying chips to companies that compete with those systems.

0 Vote(s)

The BP oil spill was among the top searches in 2010, according to Yahoo and AOL.(Credit:U.S. Coast Guard)The tragic BP oil spill was on the minds of Yahoo and AOL search users this year.According to Yahoo, which released its Year In Review blog post today, more users searched for information about the BP oil spill than any other topic in 2010. It was followed by searches for the World Cup, Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, and Lady Gaga, respectively. Apple'siPhone took the sixth spot in Yahoo's list of the top searches, while Megan Fox, Justin Bieber, American Idol, and Britney Spears rounded out the top 10.When it came to queries through Yahoo's mobile search, the list was much different. According to the company, the NFL was the most popular mobile query this year, followed by Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, and the NBA. The BP oil spill fell to 10th place in the company's mobile-search list. The World Cup was the most searched-for sporting event on Yahoo this year, while more people asked "how to tie a tie" than any other question in 2010. Apple's iPhone 4 topped the list of "obsessions" this year, beating out Lindsay Lohan and theiPad. When it came to the financial world, unemployment was the top search query in that sector, Yahoo reported.AOL's list of the top searches in 2010, which it announced yesterday, is a bit different.Although the company didn't say which queries bested them all, it revealed that Tiger Woods attracted the most searches among celebrities during the year. Apple's iPad was the "top shopping" query in 2010. New York City's trouble with bedbugs caused that query to top all health-related searches. The BP oil spill was the most popular news query of the year, beating out unemployment and the earthquake in Haiti.Microsoft yesterday released its own list of top searches for 2010 on Bing. According to the company, its most popular search was for Kim Kardashian. She was followed by Sandra Bullock, Tiger Woods, Lady Gaga, and Barack Obama, respectively. Perhaps a sign of the state of the economy, the 10th most-popular Bing query this year was "free."Google has yet to release its list of the top search queries in 2010. Given the strong debt markets, improving business conditions and other financing options, Seagate has initiated a plan to further optimize its capital structure to maximize shareholder returns."Luczo announced in October that the company was exploring a sale to a private equity firm. It was reported that at least two firms were interested. Seagate has taken the private equity option before. Back in 2000, the hard-drive maker was bought out for $20 billion by Silver Lake Partners, only to step back into the public markets just two years later. In the last few years, as one of the largest hard-drive makers in the world, Seagate has seen its business take a hit from the drop in consumer and corporate PC sales. This time, however, it appears it plans to ride out this rough patch with its books in the public eye.

0 Vote(s)

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, shown here at the 2010 RSA conference, would have the power to &34'establish and enforce&34' cybersecurity requirements for the private sector.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Democratic politicians are proposing a novel approach to cybersecurity: fine technology companies $100,000 a day unless they comply with directives imposed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.Legislation introduced this week would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to levy those and other civil penalties on noncompliant companies that the government deems "critical," a broad term that could sweep in Web firms, broadband providers, and even software companies and search engines."This bill will make our nation more secure and better positions DHS--the 'focal point for the security of cyberspace'--to fulfill its critical homeland security mission," said Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.Thompson's proposal comes after a decade of heated, sometimes classified discussions in Washington centering on how much authority the federal government should have to regulate network and computer security, and which agency should be in charge. In a series of reports, three successive presidential administrations have taken strikingly similar approaches that favor self-regulation.Skeptics say it's not clear that lawyers and policy analysts who will inhabit DHS' 4.5 million square-foot headquarters in the southeast corner of the District of Columbia have the expertise to improve the security of servers and networks operated by companies like AT&T, Verizon, Microsoft, and Google. (American companies already spend billions of dollars on computer security a year.)"Congress is stepping forward to regulate something it has no idea how to regulate," says Jim Harper, a policy analyst at the free-market Cato Institute. "It's a level of bureaucracy that actually adds nothing at all."DHS's own cybersecurity record is far from perfect. In 2005, government auditors concluded that DHS failed to live up to its cybersecurity responsibilities and may be "unprepared" for emergencies' as recently as 2008, the head of the DHS said the agency still needed to develop a plan to respond to a "cybercrisis."Besides Thompson, the new bill, called the Homeland Security Cyber and Physical Infrastructure Protection Act (HSCPIPA), has other high-profile backers. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), chairman of the intelligence subcommittee, and Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), chairman of the cybersecurity subcommittee, are also co-sponsors. No Republicans have signed on."Cyberattacks, whether originated by other countries or sub-national groups, are a grave and growing threat to our government and the private sector," Harman said. "This bill provides new tools to DHS to confront them effectively and make certain that civil liberties are protected."Section 224 of HSCPIPA hands DHS explicit legal "authorities for securing private sector" computers. A cybersecurity chief to be appointed by Napolitano would be given the power to "establish and enforce" cybersecurity requirements.HSCPIPA's process works like this: DHS draws up a list of regulated "critical" companies by evaluating the likelihood of a "cyberincident," existing vulnerabilities, and the consequences of an attack. DHS is supposed to consult with the NSA, other federal agencies, and the private sector to the "maximum extent practicable," but the other groups don't get a veto over the final list.Any "system or asset" that is a "component of the national information infrastructure"--read broadly, that could be any major Web site or provider--is fair game for DHS regulation. Companies can appeal if they don't want to be on the "critical" list, but it means asking DHS to reconsider its original decision (no neutral party considers the appeal)."With a little bit of imagination, you can pretty much pull anything into that," says Lauren Weinstein of People for Internet Responsibility. "Does Google represent critical infrastructure now It's hard to see how any major Internet service or property could be assured of the fact that it would not be covered."Once the list is complete, DHS has the authority to require those regulated tech companies to "comply with the requirements" that it has levied. Those requirements include presenting "cybersecurity plans" to the agency, which has the power to "approve or disapprove" each of them. DHS "may conduct announced or unannounced audits and inspections" to ensure "compliance.""In the case of noncompliance," the legislation says, DHS "may levy civil penalties, not to exceed $100,000 per day, for each instance of noncompliance."Harper, from the Cato Institute, says that private firms already have the right incentives on cybersecurity. HSCPIPA imposes "a layer of bureaucracy that seeks to replicate the incentive structure that technology firms already face," he says.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)With its simple styling, the 2010 Challenger is an excellent take on a classic Dodge musclecar. But more impressive here is the update to the driving tech. Boasting 425 horsepower in SRT trim, the Challenger is surprisingly drivable. It does equally well crawling through a parking lot or blasting down a country road. Far less back-breaking than other modern muscle cars, it exhibits European refinement in ride quality.Tech-wise, it looks a little rough, but it is feature rich. We didn't like using the graphical interface for the navigation system, but voice command worked very well.iPod and phone integration also did their jobs.Check out our full 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 review.

0 Vote(s)

Mozilla is advising fans ofFirefox to update the stable version of the browser after it released a patch for a security bug marked "critical" today. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, Firefox 3.6.12 patches a heap buffer overflow that could allow for remote code execution. Mozilla notes that the bug affects the current version 3.6 branch of Firefox, the legacy version 3.5 branch, and could potentially affect Thunderbird users who load Web pages in the RSS reader. The bug has not been found in the upcoming version 4, currently in beta development and behind schedule. Firefox 4 beta 7 was originally due in the middle of September, then pushed back to the end of September because of a stability bug. Mozilla has since initiated a code freeze on the next generation of its browser but has yet to update the schedule because of multiple critical bugs. It's expected that Mozilla's updated JavaScript engine will land in the seventh beta. Called JaegerMonkey, it's currently available for testing in the Firefox nightlies.

0 Vote(s)

In online games, social game firms such as Zynga have stolen the limelight in 2010. But massively multiplayer online game publisher Gazillion Entertainment is stealing some back today as it announces it has raised $60 million. The money comes from Singapore-based private equity firm Temasek Holdings. That&'s a lot of money, but Gazillion is one of the most ambitious builders of MMOs, or virtual gaming worlds. The company just launched its Lego Universe online games for kids.Gazillion also has a license to build a major MMO based on the Marvel universe of superhero characters. And it is also working on an MMO for kids dubbed Marvel Super Hero Squad.Only Zynga has raised more money than Gazillion in the game space in 2010. It will be heartening for others in the game industry see that a traditional MMO online game companies can still draw a lot of investor interest, even though most of the attention has been focused on social and mobile games.Gazillion was founded by Rob Hutter and raised a lot of money at the outset. It announced its Marvel deal in March, 2009. Other backers include Hearst Corp., Abu Dhabi Media Co., Revolution Ventures, and Pelion Ventures. These kinds of games take a lot of people and a long time to develop' many of them take a lot of funding and often go off schedule. The company has been quiet recently, but earlier this year it shut down a major game at its Slipgate Ironworks studio, headed by Doom co-creator John Romero. That led to some unspecified layoffs.Temasek is owned by the Singapore goverment and has holdings in Singapore TV broadcaster MediaCorp, Indian telecom firm Bharti Airtel, Chinese video site Tudou, and Chinese online gaming firm 9You.Gazilliona4a4s game studios include Amazing Society, based in Issaquah, Wash., which is making the Super Hero Squad game and two other unannounced MMOs' Net Devil in Louisville, Colo., in charge of LEGO Universe, Jumpgate Evolution and another unannounced game' Gargantuan in San Mateo, Calif., making the Marvel Universe PC and console MMO game' and Slipgate Ironworks in San Mateo, Calif.Next Story: Is Google&'s data spat with Facebook a prelude to social war Previous Story: The Kno wants to be the tablet for students &8212' but is it too priceyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Lego Universe, Marvel Superhero SquadCompanies: Gazillion EntertainmentPeople: John Romero, Rob Hutter Tags: Lego Universe, Marvel Superhero SquadCompanies: Gazillion EntertainmentPeople: John Romero, Rob HutterDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Ticketfly, a startup hoping to challenge Ticketmaster with its social media savvy, said it has had a good year &8212' and it&'s capping the year off with a new partner, the Baltimore Grand Prix. The grand prix is a big IndyCar race, and it&'s projected to draw more than 150,000 visitors over the 2011 Labor Day weekend. Beyond the pure numbers, the deal is significant for Ticketfly because it marks the company&'s first big partner outside the concert industry.&''Ticketfly has had a lot of success in large-scale, outdoor music festivals, so now ita4a4s time for us to continue our growth into new segments and to apply our skill set to those segments,&'' Ticketfly chief executive Andrew Dreskin said in a press release. The San Francisco startup was founded by Dreskin and Dan Teree, who previously led TicketWeb, which was acquired by Ticketmaster. They said they saw an opening for a service that not only sold tickets, but also helped concert promoters create a presence on sites like Facebook and Twitter. The company says it now serves more than 100 venues and is on-track to sell 1.2 million tickets this year,Ticketfly raised $3 million from High Peaks Venture Partners, Contour Venture Partners, The NYC Seed Fund, and angel investors including Howard Lindzon and Roger Ehrenberg.Next Story: Google Maps 5.0 for Android now available with 3D buildings, offline support Previous Story: Rackspace picks up cloud performance monitoring startup CloudkickPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Boston Grand Prix, ticketingCompanies: TicketflyPeople: Andrew Dreskin, Dan Teree Tags: Boston Grand Prix, ticketingCompanies: TicketflyPeople: Andrew Dreskin, Dan TereeAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Apple just wrapped up its press event for the iPad 2, and Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman has already weighed in with her response. Her verdict: Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is right when it says that a4A2011 will be the year of the iPad 2.a4During the event, Jobs made several digs at the competition, arguing that a wave of a4Acopycata4 devices are flooding the market, but theya4a4re taking the wrong approach by treating tablets as a4Athe next PC marketa4 rather than a4Apost-PC devices that need to be easier to use than a PC, more intuitive.a4 Jobsa4a4 confidence seems well-earned, given the iPada4a4s stellar sales &8212' J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz had previously predicted that Apple will dominate the market until 2012 at least. So how does the iPad 2 affect that argument Rotman predicts that the device will claim 80 percent of the total US marketshare for tablets in 2011. The iPad 2 seems to represent an incremental improvement over its predecessor rather than a huge leap forward, but Rotman argued that the key to Applea4a4s victory lies not in a rational comparison of features. Instead, it&'s mostly about adding enough cool stuff to stir consumers&' emotions:Apple understands desire. The first thing consumers will notice about the iPad 2 is how it feels: Lighter (by a crucial 2 ounces) and thinner (at 8.8mm, thinner than an iPhone 4). Color triggers emotion: iPad 2 comes in not just black but white, with multiple colors in the thin &''smart covers&'' that snap into place with &''auto-aligning magnets&'' and clean those unsightly fingerprints off your screen. a4In a post-PC world, consumers have a more intimate relationship with their devices. They use them on the couch and in bed and not just at their desk. They show their devices to other people (40% of iPad owners in Forrester&'s surveys report regularly sharing their iPad with other people). Fostering that desire is a smart way to differentiate your piece of glass from other pieces of glass that perform essentially the same functions.Still, Rotman said ita4a4s possible that someone could take on the iPad, pointing to Amazon, Sony, and Microsoft as companies that might announce something formidable. So Apple has solidified its place at the top but, she said, a4AThings could get rowdy.a4Next Story: Nintendo to partner with Netflix, AT&038'T to boost 3DS Previous Story: Ge Wang on iPad 2: it&'s better for multimedia app makers (video)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPad, iPad 2, tabletsCompanies: Apple, ForresterPeople: Sarah Rotman, Steve Jobs Tags: iPad, iPad 2, tabletsCompanies: Apple, ForresterPeople: Sarah Rotman, Steve JobsAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.

Welcome to the age of the stealth IPO.Groupon, the fast-growing purveyor of online discounts from local businesses, has confirmed through afiling with the Securities and Exchange Commission, that it has authorized a new $950 million financing round. (Groupon&'s plans first came to light earlier this week through a related filing in the state of Delaware, where Groupon is incorporated, discovered and analyzed by VC Experts.)Of the $950 million, $500 million has already been raised from new and existing investors. New investors, Fortune reports include, T. Rowe Price, Morgan Stanley, and Fidelity Investments &8212' all players one would expect to see involved in an initial public offering. The funds involved are staggering, ranking among the largest venture-capital financings ever. And an estimated $345 million is going to cash out insiders. It&'s important to note that that&'s an estimate: Groupon is reportedly making a tender offer to buy back up to 15 percent of current investors&' shareholdings. That estimated $345 million could represent the maximum if CEO Andrew Mason (pictured here, in a thoroughly fictional Photoshop), Lightbank&'s Brad Keywell and Eric Lefkofsky, Accel Partners and other prominent shareholders sold a full 15 percent of their holdings. But it&'s still notable that Groupon is raising a massive warchest and offering to cash out insiders, all without the usual mechanism of an initial public offering. Here&'s my take: Groupon is satisfying restive shareholders who may wish it had taken Google&'s $6 billion offer, at the same time that it&'s gathering an intimidatingly large cash pile to buy up overseas knockoffs of its daily-deal site and scare off domestic competitors like LivingSocial and BuyWithMe out of the market. Meanwhile, it&'s building a sales force to reach more and more cities and beefing up its technology to personalize offers and satisfy demand from businesses. And this stealth IPO has one more advantage: There&'s nothing preventing Groupon from doing a real IPO in 2011. If anything, the reassuring cash pile makes it a more attractive investment.Previous Story: Amazon turns on Kindle ebook lendingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: daily deals, e commerce, IPO, social buying, social shoppingCompanies: Fidelity Investments, Groupon, Morgan Stanley, T.
Back in 1961, Steve Russell was toying around with electronics at the Tech Model Railroad Club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He created a game called Spacewar!, an early computer game that ignited interest in computer video games. Over time, Russell&'s invention spawned copycat games such as Computer Space, Space War, and Asteroids. The latter was a huge hit in the arcades.Russell wrote the first two versions of the game in Lisp for the IBM 704 computer. We caught up with him at the opening of the $19 million Revolution exhibit at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. (The exhibit opens to the public on Thursday). Russell has a working version of the game running on a Digital Equipment Corp. PDP-1.He noted that it took the contributions of just four people to come up with Spacewar! That&'s far different from the modern age of video games, which often require teams of 100 or 200 people. Russell&'s work preceded that of pioneers such as Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn, who made the first big commercial successes in video games. In Spacewar!, you fly one of two space ships &8212' the Needle and the Wedge &8212' that attack each other as they orbit a sun. The ships feel the sun&'s gravitational effect as they move near it. The missiles fired from the space ships don&'t have a gravitational effect, for lack of memory. That&'s why Russell decided that they were photon torpedoes, or light energy pulses, which aren&'t subject to gravity. The game is just 2,000 lines of machine language. It uses about half of the available 18-bit words of the 4,000 words of memory in the Digital PDP-1 minicomputer that the game runs on. Here&'s our video interview with Russell, who noted that he didn&'t really cash in big on the whole video game phenomenon, which now generates $21 billion in sales per year in the U.S.Next Story: Indie sandbox game Minecraft racks up 1 million sales sans a publisher Previous Story: Who&'s afraid of young startups An increasing number of venture capitalistsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Asteroids, Spacewar!Companies: Computer History MuseumPeople: Steve Russell Tags: Asteroids, Spacewar!Companies: Computer History MuseumPeople: Steve RussellDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
A company called Graphight just announced a new service that it describes as a4AeHarmony meets Mint.com for professional networking,a4 which it says will make salespeople more effective. So does that mean Well, Graphight is like Mint.com in that aggregates information from a number of online accounts &8212' in this case ita4a4s your social networks and email inboxes, where you might be doing professional networking. Then like eHarmony, Graphight recommends connections you might want to reach out to. So it might recommend an important sales lead who you haven&'t spoken to in a while.Therea4a4s also a mobile application, which means you could be in the airport with an hour to kill and quickly bring up a list of contacts who you can reach out to, or you could find yourself in a new town and immediately see who you should try to meet.Graphight demonstrated its product at the Launch conference today in San Francisco. Now, this might not sound like something you might use &8212' one of the event judges, Joyent chief executive David Young, said it sounded a4Avery dystopiana4. But Graphighta4a4s spokespeople noted that their target audience includes salespeople who have 2,500 to 5,000 business contacts. At any given time, they might be talking to 5 to 10 percent of them to close deals, but ita4a4s probably a good idea for them to reach out to other contacts and lay the groundwork for deals in the future.Salesforce.com is clearly interested in this area as well, since it purchased Etacts, a startup trying to bring similar features specifically to email. Basically, get ready for a future where you get many more calls from salespeople saying, &''So, uh, how&'s it going&''Lowercase Capitala4a4s Chris Sacca argued that this could actually apply beyond salespeople. For example, what about guys who want to manage all the women they&'re trying to date Not that I recommend that use case.Next Story: Junar:the dashboard for cheap Web content production Previous Story: AudioMicro unleashes smarter way to download cartoons, tattoos, and morePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: launch2011, networkingCompanies: Graphight Tags: launch2011, networkingCompanies: GraphightAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Atari has named a new chief executive today, promoting Jim Wilson from within to the top job as part of a plan to resuscitate the company&'s struggling video game business.Atari is the oldest brand in video games, but it has not been the most successful. The company has changed hands a few times and is now based in Paris, France. Wilson, who was deputy CEO, replaces Jeff Lapin, who is leaving the company. For the first half of the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, the company reported revenues of $38 million, down 57 percent from $89.9 million a year ago. The company reported a net loss of $12 million, compared to a loss of $37.9 million a year earlier. That&'s pretty sad for a company with a brand that goes back to the beginning of video games. Atari&'s Pong ignited the video game revolution in 1972.Wilson joined Atari&'s U.S. division as CEO in 2008. He helped turn around that business and has been focused on getting things right in Europe. The company has shifted more emphasis to its digital, online, and mobile businesses. But it suffered a huge setback when Star Trek Online, made by the Cryptic Studios division of Atari, was poorly received. Atari has taken the Cryptic resources and focused them on social casual online games. Smaller games such as Faeries vs. Darklings (pictured) are the focus for the future.a4AJim has the boarda4a4s full support as he continues to drive new goals of growth and success. At the end of Jeffa4a4s mandates, Atari is better positioned as we enter the next strategic phase of our plan,a4 said Frank Dangeard, Atari chairman, in a statement. But Atari is a small fish in a pond full of piranhas. Rivals such as Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft are far bigger and have proven more adept at making hit games. Wilson will run the company&'s operations from Los Angeles.Next Story: Skype CEO offers update on outage that affected tens of millions Previous Story: Secret Santa success caps banner year for RedditPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Faeries vs. Darklings, PongCompanies: AtariPeople: Jeff Lapin, Jim Wilson, Thom Kozik Tags: Faeries vs. Darklings, PongCompanies: AtariPeople: Jeff Lapin, Jim Wilson, Thom KozikDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
