Microsoft revealed more about the plight of Netbook sales in the age of theiPad during the company's third-quarter earnings conference call today. This follows statements by Intel's chief financial officer earlier in the month. A Toshiba Netbook.(Credit:Toshiba)The Redmond, Wash., software giant said today that the consumer PC market declined 8 percent in the most recent quarter and part of that was "a 40 percent decline in Netbooks," according to a statement by Bill Koefoed, general manager of investor relations, during the earnings conference call. "In total, we estimate the PC market declined 1 percent to 3 percent in the third quarter," he said.At Intel, the story--or at least the emphasis--was different, with the chipmaker reporting strong PC client growth of 17 percent on April 19. In a CNET interview on April 19, Stacy Smith, Intel's chief financial officer, said this about Netbook sales: "The Atom [processor] volume going into Netbooks is pretty flat quarter on quarter. Pretty flat year on year. If there's an impact withtablet cannibalization, it certainly is happening there. But even there it's still a $400 million business for us." Today, Microsoft provided more clarity. Responding to a question from an analyst, Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein explained some of the reasons for the discrepancy between Intel's relatively neutral and/or upbeat statements and Microsoft's more sober interpretation. "There are some unique things going on with Intel's results...There's a few other things in terms of an extra week in the quarter," he said. "They've also excluded netbooks from the PC MPU (microprocessor unit) numbers. And I think there was some appropriate inventory buildup so if you look at our numbers, it ties pretty closely from a unit perspective to what they're seeing. And obviously, we're in line with the big third party analysts as well." The last statement from Microsoft is important. Intel was questioned during its earnings conference call about why it had such robust earnings despite less upbeat analyst numbers. Whatever the case, Apple's iPad is undoubtedly having an effect on Netbook sales, as numerous reports have shown. And Intel may ultimately abet this trend as it points its Atom processor increasingly in the direction of tablets. Via Business Insider.

0 Vote(s)

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg(Credit:The City of New York)New York City plans to restrict the use of dirty heating fuels, use its capped landfills for solar farms, and issue loans for green and energy efficiency upgrades to home owners.New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the latest initiatives for PlaNYC, the city's sustainability plan, on Thursday at a press conference in Harlem. It's part of the lead up to Earth Day, which is Friday, April 22, and also happens to be the anniversary of when PlaNYC was first announced, in 2007.Over 132 initiatives grew out of "48 public meetings with 220 groups, yielding almost 1,000 ideas, suggestions, and feedback" and are included in the updated plan released by the mayor's office Thursday. The solar panel/landfill project aims to create partnerships with solar developers. The city plans to offer some of its 3,000 acres of landfill property, including some land on the infamous Fresh Kills landfill, for development of solar farms. The Clean Heat heating fuel campaign proposes to use financial incentives and a public education campaign to curb the use of certain types of heating oils in favor of natural gas and low-sulfur oil. It came about as a direct result of the findings from the city's most recent air quality assessment."Just 1 percent of all buildings in the city produce 86 percent of the total soot pollution from buildings--more than all thecars and trucks in New York City combined. They do this by burning the dirtiest grades of heating fuel available, known as residual oil, or 6 and 4 heating oil," according to an excerpt from the report.Perhaps taking a cue from social-media savvy Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Mayor Bloomberg announced he would be implementing a social-media platform dedicated to crowd-sourcing answers and directing help on New York issues. The new-media tool, called "Change by Us," will first propose questions to the public, then expand into a platform for any community group to utilize. The mayor's office also announced via Twitter that Bloomberg would take questions from the public about PlaNYC marked askmike via Twitter, and try to answer them on his Friday morning radio show."97 percent of PlaNYC's initiatives have been launched. Now we're updating the plan to find new ways to reach our sustainability goals," said a post on the mayor's Twitter page, @NYCMayorsOffice.Bloomberg was compared with Booker after a December 2010 blizzard in which the Newark Mayor successfully used his Twitter account to oversee Newark resources and communicate directly with residents, while the New York mayor simply tweeted that residents should call the usual agencies.PlaNYC was originally announced on Earth Day 2007, with the main intent of reducing the city's greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 when compared with its 2005 levels. As of 2011, emissions have dropped by 13 percent.PlaNYC not only addresses carbon emissions, it also includes programs to change things like the city's air quality in general, water quality, land use, transportation habits, and electricity usage.

0 Vote(s)

Tapjoy&39's favor system inside an iOS application. Users can download and launch applications to gain in-game currency.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Following murmurs of Apple making changes to its App Store ranking algorithms to devalue the effect of downloads alone, new claims have been made that Apple is actively rejecting applications that include features designed to boost installations.A letter sent to developers by Tapjoy, a company that runs a program that promises to "drive 100,000-plus app installs daily" as well as grow revenue by 100 percent, said that an unspecified number of applications making use of the promotional program were being rejected by Apple."To be clear, there is no new Apple policy that we are aware of," wrote Mihir Shah, Tapjoy's president and CEO, in the letter picked up by VentureBeat. "It seems there may be a new interpretation of the existing 3.10 clause, which is a bit surprising, as Tapjoy, AdMob, iAd, Flurry, W3i and others all power various forms of app install advertising."The 3.10 clause Shah is referring to is part of Apple's App Store Guidelines, which highlight manipulating and cheating of user reviews and chart ranking within the App Store, threatening to ban offenders:3.10 Developers who attempt to manipulate or cheat the user reviews or chart ranking in the App Store with fake or paid reviews, or any other inappropriate methods will be removed from the iOS Developer Program.Shah said if that was the case, it was a "misconception" by Apple about the company's pay-per-install program, as well as others like it. "We believe there are significant benefits to the advertiser (only pay for what you get), the publisher (monetize users who otherwise wouldn't pay), and perhaps most importantly to the users, who not only get to discover new, exciting applications, but receive what is essentially a coupon for ad-funded virtual currency inside one of their favorite apps," Shah wrote. "All of this, of course, adds up to value for Apple as well, by creating a viable and thriving ecosystem."Despite Tapjoy's claims, not all these companies are convinced Apple has made sweeping changes to its reviews system to bar such features from applications. W3i, a company that offers a similar pay-per-install advertising program, would be a likely target. But company spokesman Ryan Ruud told CNET that "it's too early for us to speculate on alleged rejections or changes to Apple's policy." Like Tapjoy, W3i's pay-per-install advertising program gives developers and publishers a way to promote applications through its network of participating applications that offer in-game points and rewards to users. The company would not say how many iOS applications make use of the system, but based on the promise of being able to "crack" the Top 25 app lists on multiple platforms, and claims of pushing more than 1.5 million total application installs per day, it's safe to say the number is high. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it was barring applications that made use of such features. CNET also reached out to Flurry, Google-owned AdMob, and Tapjoy for more information about the scale of any rejections for applications that make use of the two systems.

0 Vote(s)

Google visualized: Top Web sites like Wikipedia, Amazon.com, YouTube, and IMDB are red and orange. Less popular sites, in blue and violet, were less visible on Google&39's first page.(Credit:Declan McCullagh/CNET)Google's sweeping changes to Web site rankings have roiled the Web industry, including the company's announcement last week that its algorithms now incorporate more "user feedback signals."The reason Google made such a dramatic change to how it ranks Web sites is simple: Search engine optimizers had learned how to game the earlier algorithm to make low-quality writing more visible than quality content. Instead of preparing Web pages designed to benefit readers, SEO-focused content farms were writing for search engines. To test the changes and provide a rare glimpse into Google's algorithmic workings, CNET compiled nearly 100,000 results by testing Google.com in March and again last Friday after the most recent alterations took effect. (See below for charts and downloadable data.)News sites generally benefited from the changes. According to our rankings based on the number of appearances on the first page of Google results, Fox News moved up from the No. 89 spot to No. 23. ABC News had a similarly impressive uptick, and ESPN, The New York Times, and Yahoo News became more visible as well.Related links&149' Demand Media downplays Google algorithm hit&149' Google to content farms: It's war&149' How to permanently block sites from Google searchThe "Panda" algorithm change dramatically lowered traffic to sites like AssociatedContent.com, FindArticles.com, and EZineArticles.com, according to a post by SearchMetrics.com. It also negatively impacted some perfectly legitimate sites, including Cult of Mac and the British Medical Journal as well.CNET's analysis found no significant change among the very top sites, which remained the same. Wikipedia, YouTube, Amazon.com, and IMDB stayed in the same enviable tier one positions, respectively. Hulu.com surged to position No. 22 from No. 51.Twitter, Facebook, and Huffington Post each moved up a single notch, with Yelp, Flickr, Apple.com, and WebMD slipping a bit. Government Web sites got a boost, with WhiteHouse.gov climbing from No. 125 to No. 79, and NASA, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Institutes of Health increasing as well.Among the Web sites that slid in visibility: WikiHow and eHow, which is consistent with other reports that Panda lowered the ranking of so-called content farms. The comparison site Nextag.com also slid."People who got hit were trying everything to get their sites out of it," says Barry Schwartz, news editor of Search Engine Land. "It was targeting low quality content sites."Google declined to elaborate. "We typically don't comment on how specific algorithmic improvements impact specific Web sites," a spokeswoman said. How we did this To generate these results, we compiled approximately 2,000 search terms from a sampling of Google Insights' Web, news, and shopping searches. We then removed the duplicates, resulting in a total of 1,656 search terms, and tested those with Google.com (while not logged in) to see what the results would be.We ignored advertisements, Google shopping results, and "searches related to" suggestions. We did decide to include Google News results, even though they're relatively ephemeral and can change by the hour. Plus, our analysis showed that excluding them wouldn't have changed the results very much. Now, the disclaimers: Google, as it will be the first to tell you, is constantly altering its algorithm, and by the time you read this, the results from Friday's searches could well be out of date. Our first scan was in March, after Panda's appearance in late February, so it likely didn't capture the most significant changes.Examples drawn from CNET&39's compliation show what search terms pulled up each of these news organizations on Google.com&39's home page.(Credit:Declan McCullagh/CNET)Also, this shouldn't be viewed as a representative cross-section of Web searches. Google Insights only includes the most popular requests, not the more obscure ones. It focuses disproportionately on current events and--because we borrowed terms from the shopping searches--products, especially tech gadgets. Then again, "charlie sheen teeth" and "venereal disease" appeared in our list of search terms. Thank you, Google Insights!Google's localization algorithm We also tested what happens if you connect to Google.com from an overseas Internet address. We picked one in London. We performed the same searches on the same day--the only variable that should have changed, in other words, was our location. The results Google engages in significant localization efforts, as you might imagine, with Yelp.com being the largest beneficiary by far.In searches originating from the U.K., Yelp appeared only twice. In U.S. searches, by contrast, it was the ninth-most popular Web site, with both its topic and individual business pages weaved seamlessly into the main search results. From our California address, Yelp garnered an enviable 45 first-page appearances for generic searches like "chocolate," "cleaning," "food," "lights," "laundry," "tv," and "weddings." Other big localization beneficiaries that appeared prominently in U.S. searches but not from the U.K.: Davidsbridal.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and Walgreens.com.In addition to highlighting nearby bookstores and drugstores operated by national chains, Google also heavily favors local businesses. For our U.S. tests, we used an Internet address near Palo Alto, Calif., which prompted Google to rank nearby businesses and municipal Web sites near the top of search results. The City of Palo Alto's Web site appears in the first page of search results for terms including "adventures," "art," "business," "gas," and "jobs." PaloAltoOnline.com makes repeat appearances ("budget cuts," "restaurants"), as do Stanford, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and Mike's Bikes. There's not as much localization in the other direction. But the BBC's Web site leaps from the No. 66 spot to No. 5, and the U.K.'s National Health Service (which made no appearance in the U.S.) shows up at No. 26. The visibility of Amazon.co.uk, the U.K. pharmacy chain Boots, and NetDoctor.co.uk also jumps dramatically. We wondered if connections to Google.com last month from abroad bypassed Panda and used the earlier algorithm, which would have made for another intriguing test. But an informed source close to the company, alas, says that's not the case.See for yourselfBelow you'll find an Excel file with multiple spreadsheets containing the raw data. If you use the data for any purpose, please attribute it to CNET and include a link to this article.Four of the spreadsheets (March U.S., April U.S., March U.K., April U.K.) should be self-explanatory. The others show comparisons and may require a bit of explanation: the first column is the hostname, and the second and third columns show how the ranking has changed from the point of comparison. The final columns represent the search terms that bring up that Web site on the first page of Google.com results. In the case of the U.K. spreadsheet comparing March to April, the second and third columns indicate that Facebook.com moved from position 11 to 7. The difference is 4, which shows a positive change (negative numbers are the opposite). For the "April U.S. vs. U.K" spreadsheet, those columns show that Yelp moved from rank 1328 to an enviable rank of 9 because it benefited from Google's localization efforts in the United States."NA" means the Web site didn't exist in the spreadsheet being used for comparison. In the "April U.S. vs. U.K" spreadsheet, "NA" shows up because the U.K.'s National Health Service Web site doesn't appear in any U.S. searches for the terms we tested. If you find anything interesting, or have any suggestions, please contribute to the discussion below!Files:Excerpts on Google Docs (limited because Google Docs allows only 400,000 cells)Full spreadsheet in Excel format (.xlsx.gz)Disclosure: McCullagh is married to a Google employee who is not involved with Panda.

0 Vote(s)

The Boston Acoustics A 360 tower speaker(Credit:Boston Acoustics)In the early 1980s the Boston Acoustics A 40 and A 60 were the go-to speakers for audiophiles on a tight budget. They were hugely popular, and there are still vast numbers of them in circulation. Well, the smart folks at Boston Acoustics have brought the A Series back, but the new speakers don't share any technology with the original models. The engineers have learned a lot over the decades, and that was immediately obvious when I heard some of the new A Series speakers earlier this week. The little bookshelf model, the A 26 ($200 each), was sounding a lot bigger than I would have thought possible. For a speaker that measures just 13 inches by 8.25 inches by 10.5 inches, bass was punchy and deep, dynamics were wide open, and the treble was clear. Female vocals sounded especially natural. These speakers don't need the assistance of a subwoofer to sound full and rich, so they would be a great fit for two-channel home theaters or hi-fi use. I also heard the A 360 towers ($400 each), which produced more and deeper bass, and played louder, but the same sound signature was evident over both speakers. The A Series also includes a smaller tower, the A 250 ($300 each)' two smaller bookshelf models, the A 25 ($150 each) and the A 23 ($140 each)' and the A 225C center-channel speaker ($250). A 5.1-channel satellite-subwoofer package, the A 2310 ($900), completes the line. Build quality is exceptional for speakers in this price class, and the cabinets' high-gloss, scratch-resistant finishes with textured top panels and magnetically attached grilles looked great. Vertical and horizontal internal braces reduce cabinet resonances for enhanced audio quality, and all the speakers feature newly developed ceramic and glass fiber polymer woofer cones that allow for higher speed, reduced distortion, and improved sensitivity. The crossover components in all A Series models incorporate low-loss film capacitors, and low-distortion laminated silicon steel cores for the inductors in all critical areas, and five-way gold-plated binding posts. The speakers also use a single 1-inch Kortec soft-dome tweeter. Two new powered subwoofers, the 300-watt ASW 650 and the 150-watt ASW 250 ($350), are also available.

0 Vote(s)

SAN FRANCISCO--As expected, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors today approved a payroll tax cap for some businesses willing to move to the city's Mid-Market neighborhood. The legislation and subsequent amendments passed by a vote of 8 to 3.The Board in a preliminary vote agreed to grant the tax breaks last week by the same margin, 8 to 3. Mayor Ed Lee has said he will sign the measure. The legislation's passing should come as good news to growing businesses in the city, but the poster child for this effort has been Twitter. The company currently resides in a building in the South of Market neighborhood and has been considering a move out of the city due to San Francisco's high payroll taxes and rents. Other tech firms like social-gaming company Zynga and Yelp, all born in San Francisco, have also threatened to leave the city for similar reasons. The legislation that officially passed today will cap payroll taxes for companies with a payroll of at least $1 million for the next seven years. That cap would remain even if the companies add to their ranks. Additionally, employee income from exercising stock options will not be taxed. Critics have said the legislation will drive away residents from one of the few neighborhoods in San Francisco with affordable rents and will deprive the city of a valuable source of revenue. But those in favor say it will revitalize an economically depressed neighborhood and encourage successful businesses to remain in a city whose tax structure has been increasingly unfriendly to businesses.CNET's Kent German contributed to this report.

0 Vote(s)

A purported &34'mold engineer drawing&34' of an iPhone 5 from earlier this month.(Credit:iDealsChina)Those who were expecting Apple to ship a follow-up to theiPhone 4 this summer may be in for a longer wait than usual. A new report from JapaneseMac blog Macotakra says Apple is behind its usual schedule of ordering parts that go into the manufacturing process for the device. That change in pace could result in Apple shipping out a phone a few months later than the June time frame for the previous two models, and July for the iPhone 3G. AppleInsider, which picked up on the report this morning, notes that the later timing would result in the next iPhone missing Apple's fiscal 2011, which concludes on September 24 this year. Along with the timing news, Macotakra's report, which is based on its sources in China, notes that Apple has still not committed to changing the materials used on the back of the iPhone from glass to metal. Rumors of such a change had first cropped up in March, with a follow-up report a few weeks later by 9to5Mac that said Apple was indeed testing out prototypes of future iPhone designs with metal backs. That move had originally been said to help set the device apart from the iPhone 4 since there were many other design similarities, as well as cut down on shattering incidents for dropped phones. If the rumor proves to be true, it would likely be unwelcome news to those who had been banking on upgrading their phones this summer. But with expectations that Apple now has to juggle both GSM and CDMA versions of the device, possibly implement a near-field communications chip (and the infrastructure that goes with it), as well as cook up the next major release of iOS, there are plenty of moving parts that can push back that time frame.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)Since Apple has still not announced how manyiPad 2s it's sold since the device went on sale last Friday, analysts and onlookers alike have tried to scrap together numbers from line counts, anecdotal stock reports, and order numbers. That last part of the strategy may no longer work, however. Citing sources familiar with Apple's ordering system, Apple Insider reports that Apple has tweaked its Web ordering tools to randomize order numbers so that users can't figure out how many units the company has moved between two different points in time.During the first iPad launch, forum users on Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board shared Web order numbers with one another and put them into a spreadsheet, eventually discovering that they were in a specific order. Putting them in line and with time codes, the group was able to determine that Apple was selling around 25,000 per hour, well ahead of company's official announcement a day and a half later. Along with the randomization claim, Apple Insider says Apple's early opening at its retail stores yesterday to cope with long lines was actually using stock delivered the day before. That move, the blog's source says, was to keep mistakes from being made in the rush to get freshly-delivered iPad 2 units to buyers. So far analysts have estimated that on its first day of iPad 2 sales, Apple sold to frenzied buyers anywhere from half a million of the devices, all the way to 1 million, compared to the 300,000 it sold on the first day of sales for the first-generation iPad. Last year the company revealed its first day sales just two days after the device went on sale.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Despite theiPad 2 not shipping with a display that matched the pixel density of theiPhone 4, a new report by DisplayMate says thetablet holds its own against the phone's display in a number of other areas. The Apple iPad 2 and iPhone 4 LCD display "shoot-out," which posted earlier today on DisplayMate's site, ran a number of tests on the iPad 2's display, comparing it to the iPhone 4 as well as the iPhone 3GS--all products made by Apple. DisplayMate's conclusion is that while the iPad 2's pixel density of 132 pixels per inch (PPI) is not quite up to snuff with the iPhone 4's 326 PPI "Retina display," it's got the same color depth, and performed similarly in viewing tests. Furthermore, the report says Apple can improve things with a few software tweaks. "Other than PPI resolution the iPad 2 display delivers similar performance to the iPhone 4 Retina Display," wrote DisplayMate's President Dr. Raymond M. Soneira in the report. "It needs a software update for anti-aliasing and another for the Auto Brightness Control, then higher PPI resolution for the next generation," he recommended. Rumors had kicked up months ahead of the iPad 2's unveiling that Apple was planning to bring a 2,048 x 1,536 pixel "Retina display" to the iPad successor. The gadget maker was also said to be working on anti-reflective technologies to combat screen glare, something that had been a target for competitors like Amazon in its advertising for the Kindle. As for the anti-aliasing suggestion, some developers have already taken it upon themselves to include the feature on their apps targeted at the iPad 2. Given the device's beefier processor and graphics specs, developers are able to run anti-aliasing, which can smooth edges without slowing down what's happening onscreen. Among the other findings from DisplayMate's round of testing was that the iPad 2's screen is less bright and has a lower contrast ratio than the iPhone 4, while it beats the iPhone 4 out in other areas like having more accurate white levels and a slightly higher readability rating when viewed at a 30 degree angle. The company has yet to determine how the iPad 2 stacks up against the iPhone 4 in terms of its anti-reflective capabilities, something that CNET has found to still be an issue when trying to use the iPad 2 as an e-reader.
Here's a new spin on an old way to catch crooks--researchers at Michigan State University have developed algorithms and software that can match police sketches to thousands of mug shots in a database. The research, by MSU computer science and engineering professor Anil Jain and doctoral student Brendan Klare, is being published in this month's edition of the journal IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence.Mug shots and composite sketches have long been used in police investigation, but witness descriptions can be inaccurate. The researchers say their project is the first large-scale experiment to link the sketches and mug shots, adding that results have been promising. The algorithms compare eye, nose, and chin shapes, as well as other structures, in pairs of images. In the experiment, using a database of more than 10,000 images, the system found the correct person 45 percent of the time. The sketches were from real crimes in which the culprit was later identified."We improved significantly on one of the top commercial face-recognition systems," Klare was quoted as saying in a release. The system is to be field-tested in about a year.

0 Vote(s)

Mozy, the online backup service, is testing out a bit of technology offered by rival DropBox: file synchronization. The company started telling customers today that it's begun closed beta testing of the sync feature, which will let files stored on one machine automatically be replicated on another. It's a big advancement over Mozy's bread-and-butter of file backup, transforming the service into something people actively use rather than run passively in the background. It also dovetails with the multicomputer subscription plans Mozy introduced in January at the same time it announced it's ditching unlimited-data backup. Also taking a page from Dropbox, Mozy announced mobile apps for Android,iPhone, andiPad that let people access their archived files. Again, this makes an archive more actively useful.

0 Vote(s)

Intel today detailed its high-speed Thunderbolt connector tech, which is appearing first on Apple's MacBook Pros--also announced today. Thunderbolt, formerly known by its codename Light Peak, is a new high-speed PC connection technology that combines high-speed data transfer and a high-definition display on a single cable. Running at 10Gbps, Thunderbolt can transfer a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds. The Intel-developed technology is coming to market through a technical collaboration with Apple, and is being made available first on Apple's new line of MacBook Pro laptop computers, which were rolled out this morning. Probably one of the most salient points today made by Jason Ziller, an Intel manager heading up Thunderbolt work, is that very-high-speed external devices will look like they're actually "in the computer," due to the use of PCIe (PCI Express) technology. PCIe, to date, is a high-speed standard typically used for internal devices like video cards. Ziller was speaking at an Intel event that CNET covered live earlier today. Ziller also addressed the optical connection question. Though originally code-named Light Peak--which makes an obvious reference to optical technology--the connector is currently being implemented as an electrical technology based on copper. Intel will work toward enabling optical Thunderbolt connectors but is not committing to any kind of firm schedule at this point, Ziller said. Intel did say, however, that it is working on an optical cable that "has the optics in the cable...[which] will extend to tens of meters. We expect to see that a little later in the year, " according to Ziller. Whither USB 3.0 An oft-voiced claim is that Thunderbolt will replace USB 3.0, the latest version of the universally used connector standard. Thunderbolt will complement USB 3.0, according to Ziller. "They will co-exist on the same platform...in terms of storage (devices) we'll see both [USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt] products on the market," he said. Addressing USB 3.0, he did mention that Intel plans to "integrate it in the future" in silicon. It's also worth noting that because both Intel and Apple are the driving forces behind Thunderbolt, it should have a very good shot at gaining acceptance--down the road--by major PC makers. That said, no major PC companies chimed in today announcing support, and Ziller deflected questions about wider adoption by specific PC makers. One reason for the lackluster support out of the gate is likely due to the close cooperation between Apple and Intel, which seemed to be exclusionary to some extent. Thunderbolt highlights: Intel-Apple collaboration Physical connector is compatible with DisplayPort and supports legacy DisplayPort devices 10Gbps per channel, bidirectional' small connector that can fit on ultraslim devices PCIe and DisplayPort protocols, compatible with standard DisplayPort displays Expect an increase in external devices that tap into the "flexibility" and speed of PCIe Daisy chains up to seven devices Moves media files faster: complements Intel's Sandy Bridge-based Quick Sync Video transcoding tech Copper (electrical) connection for now, optical connectors possible in the future but no firm schedule Optical cables (not connectors) are coming later this year, however Will complement USB 3.0, according to Intel The nuts and bolts of Thunderbolt.
To improve solar cell efficiency, Stanford researchers added a self-assembling monolayer (SAM) of an organic molecule to a titanium oxide semiconductor and cadmium sulfide quantum dots.(Credit:Stanford University)In the search for cheap and efficient solar cells, Stanford University researchers are mixing in new ingredients.Chemical engineering professor Stacey Bent on Sunday presented the results of a paper at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that showed how a new combination of materials boosted the performance of solar cells made with quantum dots. The research is in very early stages, but it could provide clues on how to make solar cells with relatively inexpensive materials that have higher efficiency than is currently possible. Many researchers are trying to use materials with quantum dots as a replacement for traditional semiconductors, such as silicon, in a solar cell. Quantum dots are tiny crystals only a few nanometers in size and can be far cheaper to produce than a silicon wafer or thin-film solar cell. Quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells can also be tuned for different wavelengths of light. But the efficiency of quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells is very low, making them impractical for commercial use. Bent and her research team added an organic molecule to a solar cell using titanium oxide semiconductor and cadmium sulfide quantum dots in an effort to improve the conversion of light to electricityAlthough the efficiency is still very low, researchers found that inserting the additional material improved the efficiency threefold. Surprisingly, the size of the organic molecule mattered, but not the type of material, according to Stanford. When sunlight hits a solar cell, an electron gets excited and "jumps" to another layer of material and carries an electric charge. Bent's theory is that the added layer to quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells helps keep that free electron separated, rather than recombining and losing its energy.

0 Vote(s)

SolarCity said today that it has acquired the residential solar business from GroSolar, giving it presence in four states in the eastern U.S.Through the move, SolarCity will offer its solar panel leasing program to homeowners in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania starting March 1, said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive. Financial terms for the cash deal were not disclosed. GroSolar will continue to operate its distribution business and installation for commercial customers. The deal adds about 55 people to SolarCity, giving it about 1,100 employees. It now works in 10 states, including California, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas, giving it the largest footprint in its line of business, according to the company.SolarCity is a pioneer in solar financing, through which consumers avoid the upfront cost of buying solar photovoltaic panels. The model initially took hold in California and is spreading to other states, particularly in places with high electricity prices or policies to encourage solar power. With a solar lease, consumers have solar electric panels installed and pay a monthly fee. Between reduced electricity consumption from the grid and the leasing fee, the net result is about a 10 percent reduction in electricity bills, Rive said. SolarCity also bought an energy efficiency company and intends to offer residential efficiency services in the new states later this year.Although not a giant acquisition, it does point to a trend of consolidation among solar installers. Whereas many residential installers have historically been small operations, Rive expects that larger companies will be able to operate with lower costs and expand further.

0 Vote(s)

Fifty fish in Microsoft&39's virtual aquarium moved relatively swiftly in this early version of IE9 running with hardware acceleration on Windows Phone 7.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)BARCELONA--Apple gets plenty of praise for advancingmobile browsers with itsiPhone's version ofSafari, but an audience greeted its performance with some laughter as Microsoft compared it to an upcoming version of IE9 for Windows Phone 7.Joe Belfiore, a Microsoft corporate vice president, showed off the browser here at the Mobile World Congress show during a keynote speech by Chief Executive Steve Ballmer. Specifically, Belfiore showed it running a Microsoft fishtank demonstration that's been in widespread use since the hardware acceleration work began in earnest among personal computer browser makers last year. And he got a laugh from out of the audience when he compared the 50 fish in the IE9 virtual fishtak on an unnamed HTC phone. They flitted rapidly on IE9 but barely moved on Safari."The Safari Web browser is not taking advantage of hardware acceleration so you really get a sense for how dramatic the difference is when we use the full-power capability of the device," he said.Belfiore neglected to emphasize that the version of IE9 he was pitting against Safari isn't due until toward the end of 2011 with an update to Windows Phone 7, and it's quite likely Safari will look different then, presumably running on new iPhone hardware.Like IE9 for Windows on PCs, the mobile version includes hardware acceleration in some domains and supports HTML5, a next-generation standard for Web pages. Belfiore also showed the mobile browser using HTML5's ability to show built-in video, in this case with a demonstration version of an IMDb movie site.Microsoft, lagging Apple's iOS and Google's Android in the smartphone market, is trying furiously to become a contender with Windows Phone 7. Released in November, a minor upgrade is due in weeks bringing copy and paste abilities and some better application performance, said Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Windows Phone 7. The IE9 for mobile devices will arrive later in 2011 in a major release, an upgrade pace not as rapid as Google's.Windows Phone customers could well be pleased with IE9--indeed, they'd better be, because it's unlikely they'll get an alternative. That's because Microsoft requires third-party apps to be written in Silverlight or XNA, and browsers today typically aren't."If you can write a browser in Silverlight or XNA, you could submit it to the market," Sullivan said. "We have no policy" to specifically bar other browsers, he added.Opera and Firefox are available on Android, though only in beta thus far, because Google released a native development kit (NDK) that lets programmers write to lower-level interfaces. Is it possible that Microsoft might take that route Not likely, he said."We have no plans" for an NDC, Sullivan said. "We think our development platform and tools are a key strength of the platform."

0 Vote(s)

INQ Mobile today took the wraps off two new Android smartphones, headed first for the U.K. market, that are designed for people who depend on Facebook. The INQ Cloud Touch(Credit:INQ)The INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q both heavily integrate the popular social network into their overall operation. Working closely with people at Facebook, INQ has outfitted the home screen with a visual feed that lets users quickly access updates, pictures, videos, and other Facebook content. The phones also provide quick links to various Facebook features, including chats, messages, wall postings, and notifications, according to London-based INQ.Facebook Places is accessible directly from the homescreen, giving people the ability to use the feature to check in at stores, restaurants, clubs, and other spots. Facebook's Events feature is also available to let people schedule events and sync them with Google Calendar. And instead of requiring users to log onto each feature separately, the phones offer a single sign-on to access all of the Facebook features available, INQ said. For entertainment, both phones provide the Spotify music player with all of its features available to subscribers."The INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q bring Facebook to people with a single touch while they are mobile and demonstrate the power of socially aware devices," Henri Moissinac, head of mobile business for Facebook, said in a statement. "INQ has built an innovative and easy to use set of features that enable people to use common Facebook interactions such as viewing photos and videos, chat, message, and check-in to their favorite businesses all from the home screen."Few specs were available on the Cloud Q, with INQ saying only that it runs Android Froyo 2.2 and offers a 2.6-inch touchscreen. But the company provided an array of details on the Cloud Touch.Like its sibling, the Touch runs Android 2.2, but ING says it's easily upgradable to Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread. Beyond Facebook Chat, the phone includes Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk for instant messaging.Hardware-wise, the Cloud Touch is powered by a Qualcomm 600MHz 7227 chipset and offers a 3.5-inch HGVA touch screen, 4MB of memory with an option to add more, and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera. Also built into the phone are Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, GPS, an FM radio, an accelerometer, and a compass. The company didn't reveal the cost of the new phones, saying only that they would sell at "affordable prices for the mass market." But speculation says that as a midlevel phone geared toward teens, the Cloud Touch could sell for as low as $50 when bought with a contract. The Cloud Touch will reach consumers during the second quarter, specifically reaching users in the U.K. in April, while the Cloud Q will show up sometime in the third quarter. Both phones will sell only at Best Buy and the U.K-based Carphone Warehouse, according to INQ.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)Google wasn't the first mobile platform provider to introduce an online app catalog, but its Android Market Web storeis the first to offer seamless over-the-air installation.Using the online Android Market is fairly straightforward. Apart from some initial hiccups everyone encountered when the Web store first launched, it takes just a few mouse clicks to wirelessly download both paid and free apps without craning over your smartphone screen or straining your peepers. However, those early frustrations are telling. Scrambling to test the online Market just after it launched, I had no problems selecting apps to download, but several of my first installation attempts failed before they succeeded. What to do if your online Market apps refuse to download is definitely a concern, particularly if you've just paid good money for an app.First, have a little patience. People downloading over a 2.5G EDGE connection, for instance, may not see downloads install as quickly as if they were on a Wi-Fi connection. That said, if the installation doesn't start within about 10 seconds, you may have a failed transfer on your hands. The good news is that your app selection is tied to the same Google account you use on your Android phone. When in doubt, going to the Settings menu on the Web store will show a list of past purchases. If your app is on that list, but not on your phone, you can download it afresh from the Market app on your phone--without being doubly charged. If your app isn't on the list, just try the installation again from the Web-based Market.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft is trying to tighten up security on medical information that is sent by e-mail, while at the same time making it easier to share. At a U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services event earlier today in Washington, D.C., the company unveiled an updated version of its HealthVault medical records system that can send encrypted copies of a patient's medical records via e-mail. Microsoft says the new feature should make it easier for health care records and other information updates to be sent to its system, while at the same time meeting security protocols mandated by the Office of the National Coordinator's Direct Project. The first health care technology companies to use it will be MedPlus and VisionShare.Medical records that are sent through Microsoft's HealthVault system will be saved to a user's profile on the service, so that they're easier to access when a patient goes to a new doctor. In a blog post by Peter Neupert, the corporate VP of Microsoft's Health Solutions Group, Neupert explained that the system will eventually expand so that doctors can share and discuss this information like they would an e-mail exchange:To start with, we will enable physicians to transmit a copy of a patient's clinical information to a new e-mail address created within HealthVault. This information can be read or saved to a patient's HealthVault account to build their personal health record - a holistic view of an individual's health history. In the future, we expect to make this functionality available to providers and to enable secure messaging for physician-to-physician consults and for transfer of patient records.Microsoft first unveiled its plans for HealthVault in late 2007, as a way to make health records more transparent and centralized for patients and health care providers alike. Besides the online component, the technology initiative was designed to expand into devices that could make use of the information to custom tailor things like workouts, and dietary recommendations. Since its introduction, Microsoft has partnered with companies like CVS Caremark to share prescription histories, as well as the Mayo Clinic, which tapped Microsoft's HealthVault to power its Health Manager product.

0 Vote(s)

One end of the CMS detector during the LHC&39's assembly in 2007.(Credit:Maximilien Brice/CERN)The Large Hadron Collider, CERN's particle accelerator straddling the border of Switzerland and France, is due to shut down for a major upgrade later than expected, after managers concluded the current rate of operational improvements could reveal new physical phenomena. The LHC is a mammoth tool best known for its search for the Higgs boson--or more likely, some believe, a suite of them--and its other probes of the bizarre realm of subatomic physics. By colliding particles in two high-energy beams of protons, or more recently lead ions, physicists can re-create conditions present near the Big Bang.Currently the LHC runs with two beams moving in opposite directions around its 27-kilometer circumference, with the particles in each beam accelerated to an energy of 3.5 tera-electron-volts or TeV.The eventual plan is to double that to 7TeV, which would detail high-energy physics better. Until recently, CERN had planned to shut down the LHC at the end of 2011 to make the upgrade. Now that plan has been pushed back.CERN has tripled the amount of data it can gather in 2011 compared with 2010, which leads to the "tantalizing hints" that new physical phenomena could be observed at the 3.5TeV level, CERN said in a statement yesterday."However, to turn those hints into a discovery would require more data than can be delivered in one year, hence the decision to postpone the long shutdown," CERN said. Thus, only a short technical pause is planned for the end of 2011."With the LHC running so well in 2010, and further improvements in performance expected, there's a real chance that exciting new physics may be within our sights by the end of the year," said Sergio Bertolucci, CERN's research director. "For example, if nature is kind to us and the lightest supersymmetric particle, or the Higgs boson, is within reach of the LHC's current energy, the data we expect to collect by the end of 2012 will put them within our grasp."

0 Vote(s)

There are dozens of companies that make dashboards to give consumers a real-time display of their energy use via the Web or a dedicated device. These dashboards are meant to help consumers save energy, but experts say that successful efficiency programs depend heavily on what information is presented to consumers and how.The Energize application seeks to get consumers actively involved by setting energy efficiency goals, measuring them, and then sharing them with others. The application can be accessed from Internet-connected devices such as smartphones or dedicated displays, or presented with paper reports. Opower is another company that has successfully used behavioral psychology, data analytics, and Web-based tools to improve utility efficiency programs. The announcement from Tendril, one of the most established smart-grid companies, was made at the DistribuTech utility conference. A number of consumer-oriented smart-grid programs are aimed at reducing peak-time power use and increasing customer efficiency.Late last week, Tendril announced a deal with Whirlpool in which the latter plans to make connected, or smart, appliances that can be managed by Tendril's Connect software.

0 Vote(s)

Verizon&39's 4G VL600 USB modem is truly a speed demon, but you don't want to enjoy it too much due to the limited data plans.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)I reviewed the LG VL600 4G LTE USB modem awhile ago and conclude that apart from the limited and expensive data plans Verizon offers with it, it makes a great solution for mobile Internet access. It seems to have just gotten better. Verizon announced today a firmware upgrade for the device that the company calls a "software update." This is not to be confused with the VZAccess Manager, which is used to start the connection. According to Verizon, the firmware update to the VL600 modem offers the following improvements:Successful reconnection to the network after the SIM card's activation or reset. The time and size of LTE Data usage sessions are now accurately recorded in the VZAccess Manager Session Log.VZAccess Manager now displays current network connection correctly. The modem now scans for better service more often to ensure the best connection possible.Unfortunately, there's no word on whether the company will lower its monthly fee of $80 and/or increase its data cap to more than 10GB (or unlimited). For now, the Clear 4G+ modem, which comes with a $55/month unlimited 4G data plan, is still clearly a better deal for those who don't travel outside of the state frequently. The new firmware, version VL600ZV4, and its update tool can be downloaded for free here. The upgrade process is fairly easy and straightforward but the detailed instructions can also be found here (PDF).

0 Vote(s)

Consumers may soon be able to pay for items on the go directly through their iPhones or iPads. Will the next-generation iPhone let you make payments on the go(Credit:Apple)Apple is reportedly working to outfit the next generation of its smartphone andtablet with near-field communications (NFC) technology, which would let consumers use the devices to make mobile payments as an alternative to cash and credit cards, according to a story today by the Bloomberg news service.Richard Doherty, director of the technology consulting firm Envisioneering Group, told Bloomberg that both theiPhone 5 from AT&T and theiPad 2 would likely include NFC chips, citing engineers working on the project. NFC technology lets devices exchange information over a short distance--no more than four inches. As such, a mobile device equipped with NFC could send payment information from a bank account to a register or terminal, allowing people to use them to pay for items and services at stores, restaurants, and other types of retail outlets. Apple has apparently been eyeing NFC for for some time. Last summer, the company hired an expert in NFC to join its mobile commerce team at the same time it reportedly was already testing the inclusion of the technology in its next iPhone. Beyond the benefits to consumers, companies like Apple stand to gain from NFC, notes Bloomberg. Like any business that accepts credit cards, Apple currently pays processing fees on every iTunes purchase made through a credit card. By letting people pay for iTunes content on their iPhones via NFC, Apple could cut out the Visa or MasterCard middleman and trim its own expenses. For tech users, the new technology could also help them more easily transfer and share files and settings between their NFC-equipped smartphones and other devices, such as PCs. Other players have also gotten into the act. Last November, AT&amp'T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile announced the creation of a new mobile payments network that would use NFC. Google soon followed up that up with the launch of its Nexus S Android phone packing an embedded NFC chip and with support for the technology in Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread. On its end, Apple is currently looking into launching a mobile payment service as early as the middle of this year, Doherty told Bloomberg.

0 Vote(s)

The first service pack forWindows 7 has been sent to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), according to a post on TechNet by Microsoft's Russian Windows Visualization team.Microsoft launched the first release candidate for Windows 7 SP1, and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 in late October of last year, saying that it would be the only RC prior to the software being finalized and made available to manufacturers. The company also promised that SP1 would arrive in the hands of users in the "first half" of 2011.Blog Winrumors, which reported the news earlier today, weighs in, saying that while SP1 is indeed going out to OEMs, it may be a while longer before consumers get their hands on it.A Microsoft spokesperson told CNET, "we have nothing to share at this time but will keep you posted."SP1 packs together a round of hotfixes, as well as an updated remote desktop client that makes use of RemoteFX. Besides bringing a boost to 3D applications, RemoteFX helps IT admins deploy Windows 7 through virtual machines using the technology, which it picked up with its acquisition of Calista Technologies back in 2008. Other SP1 adds include dynamic memory support for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2, and all previous Windows security fixes.Earlier this week, Microsoft released KB 976902 through its Windows Update software before having the knowledge base article to explain what the update was for. Security expert Brian Krebs dug a little deeper and found out it was an update to the Windows stack to get the OS ready for future updates, something the company did ahead of the SP1 beta back in July.

0 Vote(s)

The parody likens Google&39's WebM video codec to the failed Esperanto language.(Credit:Tim Sneath)A Microsoft evangelist has mocked Google's decision to remove H.264 video support from Chrome, implying that Google is trying to impose an edict on an industry that's already made up its mind to the contrary. In a blog post, Tim Sneath, who runs Windows and Web evangelism for Microsoft, likens Google's WebM video codec to the utopian but unsuccessful Esperanto language. The blog post rewrites Google's original announcement that the company is removing support for the widely used H.264 codec to advance its own WebM.Both technologies can be used with the nascent HTML5 standard to embed video directly into Web pages without using a plug-in such as Adobe Systems' Flash Player. But Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 beta and Apple'sSafari support H.264, while Opera and Mozilla'sFirefox support WebM and the earlier, largely unsuccessful Ogg Theora technology for encoding and decoding video. Sneath wrote:The Esperanto language was invented last century as a politically neutral language that would foster peace and international understanding...We are supporting the Esperanto and Klingon languages, and will consider adding support for other high-quality constructed languages in the future. Though English plays an important role in speech today, as our goal is to enable open innovation, its further use as a form of communication in this country will be prohibited and our resources directed towards languages that are untainted by real-world usage.Sneath hyperlinks "Esperanto" references to the WebM Project, "Klingon" to Theora, and "English" to the Wikipedia entry for H.264. (He doesn't attempt to draw any parallels between the difficulties of learning English and the expense of licensing H.264 patents.)The post is titled "An Open Letter from the President of the United States of Google." And in a tweet, Sneath referred to Google's decision as "despotism."Clearly, the post is snarky and jocular. But it still can be included as an example of the backlash against Google's H.264 move.Microsoft is among the patent holders that receives payments when the MPEG LA licenses the H.264 pool of patents, but Microsoft said it pays more to the licensing group for including H.264 support inWindows 7 than it receives in royalty payments from the group.

0 Vote(s)

The SoundFreaq SFQ-02 Sound Step speaker dock.(Credit:Donald Bell/CNET)One of my happy surprises of 2010 was a Bluetooth speaker dock called Sound Platform from an upstart company called SoundFreaq. Stylish yet unique, with a premium sound, generous extras, and a down-to-earth price, the Sound Platform came out of nowhere to deliver a product few others can match. So this year, in spite of being torn in a dozen different directions to covertablets atCES, I made time to visit SoundFreaq to see what they're cooking. For their sophmore product, SoundFreaq is going smaller, more portable, and more affordable. The SFQ-02 Sound Step is a 2.1 speaker dock, due out this summer for $149. It doesn't have the tiny, retro knobs of the original, but core features such as A2DP Bluetooth streaming,iPod/iPhone/iPad support, FM radio, remote control, and UQ3 audio enhancement are all still here. The Sound Step boasts some advantages over its predecessor, as well. For one, it includes a built-in lithium-ion battery, offering up around 6 hours of cord-free music. There's a video output, making it a suitable little soundbar to keep near your TV. And finally, the dock connection has been raised up, making it possible to dock an iPad (even one that's wrapped in a case). To see the SFQ-02 Sound Step in all its minimal glory, head over to our photo gallery.SoundFreaq SFQ-02 Sound Step (photos)

0 Vote(s)

It was made available in the free Mac OS X 10.6.6 software update. According to Apple, the store currently has over 1,000 free and paid apps in categories ranging from education to games. But the Mac App Store's first day didn't bring only good news for Apple.A reported Mac App Store hack being shared across the Web allows users to take digital receipts from free applications and use them on pirated copies of a paid app. The receipts effectively fool the paid app into believing use has been authorized, thus allowing users to run the programs and pay nothing for them. (Credit:Tim Hornyak/CNET)LAS VEGAS--What if you could control a 5-foot-tall robot with youriPad iRobot's AVA, introduced today at the Consumer Electronics Show, is a self-navigating,tablet-controlled droid that can map out environments, project your presence into remote locations, and turn virtually any app into a mobile platform. "You just tap your tablet screen to tell it where to go," said iRobot CEO Colin Angle, who introduced a prototype of the machine. "It could be serving drinks or act as a mobile alarm clock." AVA, short for "avatar," is a three-wheel platform that runs on software from the company's military robots like PackBot. It has a Wi-Fi-linked tablet mounted on a mast that can move up and down, from about 3 feet to a maximum height of about 5 feet. The robot has two PrimeSense sensors, the same ones used in the Kinect forXbox 360, as well as microphones and speakers, laser rangefinders, scanning acoustic sensors, and bump sensors for obstacles. It can move in any direction, with a top speed of about 6 feet per second. Aside from its excellent maneuverability and speed, using a tablet (or any Android device) opens up a wealth of applications as well as programming by myriad app developers. Unlike telepresence robots that rely on remote control to move around, AVA can learn and map out its environment, taking some of the navigation tedium out of telepresence. iRobot doesn't have a release date yet, but Angle said the company is actively seeking application developers for the platform. The telepresence robotics field keeps growing steadily, and if iRobot's success with Roomba is anything to judge by, it looks poised to go mainstream before too long.

0 Vote(s)

Intel compares chip performance at CES 2011.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Intel unveiled its long-awaited new line of desktop and laptop CPUs at its press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show today in a demonstration that positioned them as a way to handle high-quality video and gaming without a separate processor. The processor lineup known as Sandy Bridge, which the company is now calling 2nd Generation Intel Core, boosts performance by grafting the graphics chip onto the CPU. It means hardware makers, especially for budget PCs, won't have to implant a separate graphics processor from rivals Advanced Micro Devices or Nvidia."It's about user experience, but you also need performance," Shmuel "Mooly" Eden, an Intel vice president, told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He said Sandy Bridge is 69 percent faster than older Intel chips. (See earlier CNET coverage and technical details.)Intel CEO Paul Otellini introduces the company&39's Sandy Bridge processors at CES 2011.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Eden showed off a series of demonstrations that highlighted the processors' ability to do speedy video format conversions, render complicated graphics in Valve's forthcoming Portal 2 game, and play a slew of instantly resizeable video clips simultaneously. One feature of Sandy Bridge could prove to be controversial: the digital rights management, or DRM, functions embedded deep within the CPU.Eden said that implanting anti-copying technology was necessary for movie studios to allow films to be sent to PCs at the same time they're released in cinemas. The studios need to feel comfortable, he said, that there is a "secure link" between their servers and home PCs.Warner Brothers, Fox, and several Bollywood studios are on board to "enable this great content to be streamed to the PC early in its release," Eden said.Kevin Tsujihara, a Warner Bros. executive vice president, showed up at Intel's event to say that studios historically have been reluctant to place their "high-value content" into a PC format, an apparent reference to frequent pirating of new releases."We now are going to put our content out earlier," Tsujihara said, without elaborating.Because the so-called Intel Insider technology relies on hardware, not software, Intel has shied away from using the term DRM, which tends to be a sore point for hackers and open-source enthusiasts. In a blog post yesterday, the company described it as "an armored truck carrying the movie from the Internet to your display, it keeps the data safe from pirates, but still lets you enjoy your legally acquired movie in the best possible quality."Intel also demonstrated Best Buy's Cinemanow service, showing the movie Inception streaming in high definition--as long as you have a Sandy Bridge PC.Manufacturers have started to announce just that. Hewlett-Packard this week said some Pavilion Elite desktops would receive the Sandy Bridge CPU after news leaked last month about upcoming Pavilion dv7 laptops also equipped with the processor. Toshiba said today that its newly updated laptop lineup will also be Sandy Bridge-equipped.CNET's Tom Krazit contributed to this report.

0 Vote(s)

Qteros, which has a method for creating ethanol from naturally occurring microbes, has signed a partnership to bring its technology to market in India. The Marlborough, Mass.-based company is expected to announce on Wednesday a joint product development deal with Pune, India-based Praj Industries. Qteros initially plans to make ethanol from the byproduct of sugar cane processing.(Credit:CC Will Ellis/Flickr)In two years, Praj and Qteros aim to develop a system using Qteros technology which can be licensed to companies that build cellulosic ethanol plants. In addition, Qteros said it has raised $22 million, which is the first tranche of a series C round of funding. Qteros was started as a University of Massachusetts spinoff in 2006 to make ethanol from non-food feedstocks, such as agricultural residue and wood chips. The company founder, Susan Leschine, identified a microbe which has properties that promise to short-cut traditional ethanol production. The microbe produces the enzymes needed to convert plant matter into sugars and ferment them into ethanol, explained CEO John McCarthy. That streamlined process, called Consolidated Bioprocessing, makes it cheaper than many competing methods, he said. In the deal with Praj, the two companies will develop an engineering design package which can be licensed to other companies that build ethanol refineries, McCarthy said. Both companies will share in any revenue from licensing, he explained.Praj has already built about 450 ethanol mills in India, which means that its current customer base is a likely customer for the cellulosic ethanol technology, McCarthy said. Instead of using sugar cane as a feedstock, those plants could create an additional facility to convert bagasse--the by-product from sugar cane ethanol processing--as a feedstock. The development of cellulosic ethanol on the whole has been disappointing in the U.S., with many companies, including Qteros, falling short of their original targets. In 2007, the U.S. set aggressive targets for "advanced biofuels" which covers ethanol not made from corn but the technology is still not done at commercial scale. McCarthy said that progress of cellulosic ethanol companies in the U.S. is unlikely to move ahead rapidly given the dependence on government loan guarantees and grants. He expects the first commercial-scale deployments will be done in Brazil, China, and India where ethanol producers can add cellulosic ethanol refineries to existing plants. Initially, Qteros expects its process to work with sugar cane bagasse and other agricultural residue but ultimately dedicated energy crops will be used.

0 Vote(s)

Best Buy is on its way to losing more market share to competing retailers, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said in a note to investors yesterday."We expect continued market share losses in consumer electronics to online retailers and lower-priced big-box competitors, and entertainment software to GameStop, Amazon, and Wal-Mart," Pachter wrote.Pachter believes Best Buy's decline is due mainly to its market strategy. The analyst said that the company's "offering the widest selection of goods at premium price points is undermined by value-focused comparison shopping."During its latest reported quarter, announced last month, Best Buy posted weaker-than-expected sales across several categories, including TVs, computers, and video games. Overall, it saw comparable store sales decline by 3 percent compared to the previous year. However, the company still generated a profit of $217 million on nearly $12 billion in revenue, meaning it might not be time to sound the alarm on Best Buy just yet.But the pressures Best Buy faces are worrisome. Most products the company sells can be purchased online for less. Even Wal-Mart, one of the company's brick-and-mortar competitors, is besting it on price in some cases. And until it finds a solution, market share erosion could be something Best Buy will continue to deal with going forward. Moreover, Best Buy's recent decision to discount items to better match the competition might not be something it can sustain for long, Pachter said. He noted that he "expect[s] to see some pressure on margins when [Best Buy] reports its February earnings" later this year due to that decision. Before that happens, Best Buy is expected to release December sales figures at the end of this week. Pachter believes it will show a 3 percent decline in same-store sales, down from the 2.2 percent decline the analyst first expected Best Buy to post. But the pangs of being a brick-and-mortar retailer are nothing new to Best Buy. The company has watched as its many competitors, including CompUSA and Circuit City, faltered in the face of online competitors. And at least so far, Best Buy has been most capable of weathering that storm.Best Buy declined to comment on Pachter's research note. The company's shares are up $0.60 to $35.07 as of this writing.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Microsoft)Microsoft warned today of a Windows vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer if the user is logged on with administrative rights. To be successful, an attacker would have to send an e-mail with an attached Microsoft Word or PowerPoint file containing a specially crafted thumbnail image and convince the recipient to open it, Microsoft said in its advisory, which also contains information on workarounds. An attacker also could place the malicious image file on a network share and potential victims would have to browse to the location in Windows Explorer. The flaw, which is in the Windows Graphics Rendering Engine, could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code in the security context of the logged-on user, meaning that accounts that are configured to have fewer user rights would be affected less.
The Joby Yogi iPad case and stand(Credit:Joby)The Joby Ori iPad stand and case(Credit:Joby)Joby, maker of a distinctive line of knobby-legged flexible tripods for cameras and other devices, has entered theiPad market with two products that serve both as cases and props.First is a flexi-leggediPod holder called the GorillaMobile Yogi. It attaches with a protective polycarbonate case and can used to simply prop up an iPad in portrait or landscape orientation or, for the more adventurous, attach it to something with the legs. Joby suggests glomming it onto kitchen fixtures to show recipes, but I'd watch out for the flour and flecks of olive oil.Second is a folding case called the GorillaMobile Ori that doubles as an iPad stand. It's made out of an aluminum-polypropylene composite and can be used to hold the iPad at a variety of angles and heights. The Ori costs $79.95 in the U.S. and 69.95 pounds in the U.K (not 79.95 pounds, as parts of the Joby Web site said for a time on Tuesday). The Yogi is $49.95 in the U.S. and 39.95 pounds in the U.K.The company is showing the products off at the Consumer Electronics show this week in Las Vegas. It's not the first time the company has catered to the Apple crowd: Joby began selling an iPhone 4 holder last year.Corrected at 3:22 p.m. PTwith the U.K. price of 69.95 pounds for the Ori.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Kodak)Rugged and waterproof cameras are growing segments of the point-and-shoot market, but most of them will cost you more than $200. The 12-megapixel Kodak EasyShare Sport, however, is less than $100 and is waterproof down to 10 feet. Unfortunately, the camera is otherwise unremarkable.Despite the appearance of a zoom rocker on back, there is no optical zoom on this camera' it's digital zoom only. The LCD on back is small at 2.4 inches, too, and the Sport seems to have a bare minimum of shooting options.Look for the EasyShare Sport in spring 2011 for $79.95 in white, gray, red, yellow, and blue.Editors' take:The Sport is a pretty limited-use camera. It isn't rugged, just waterproof and in turn dustproof, so it won't stand up to the abuse that more-expensive shockproof, crushproof, and freezeproof models can handle. But if all you want is a camera to keep poolside, survive a trip to the beach, or keep working in rain, it's an option that hasn't really existed at this price. Plus, since it's powered by AA-size batteries, you can easily keep this handy as a secondary camera for when things might get a little wet.

0 Vote(s)

Intel has rolled out an ultrasmall solid-state drive, targeting dual-drive laptops that pair an SSD with a hard disk drive.Intel&39's ultrasmall Solid-State Drive 310 is aimed at dual-drive laptops. (Credit:Intel)Intel's Solid-State Drive 310 Series delivers "full SSD performance in 1/8th the size," according to Intel's announcement today. The SSD contains 34-nanometer (one of Intel's most advanced chip manufacturing processes) Intel NAND flash memory and is available in an m-SATA form factor (see photo) in 40GB and 80GB capacities. It weighs just 10 grams. In addition to dual-drive laptops, Intel said it is targeting single-drive Netbooks and tablets. In a dual-drive laptop, an SSD is used to "accelerate boot time and access to frequently used applications or files," Intel said. High-end gaming laptop vendors have been offering dual-drive configurations for some time. A typical configuration consists of a large-capacity HDD and smaller-capacity SSD. SSDs can be extremely fast, leaving traditional hard disks in the dust when reading data. And in ultrathin laptops, they are being used as the primary drive due to space and heat considerations. Apple has moved its entire MacBook Air line to SSDs. And ultrathin designs like the Sony Vaio X series use SSDs because, like the MacBook Air, they cannot accommodate the relative bulk of a standard hard disk. Lenovo said it will tap the new Intel SSDs. "The Intel SSD 310 series will allow us to provide the advantages of a full-performance Intel SSD paired with the storage of a hard disk drive in a small, dual-drive system," said Tom Butler, director of ThinkPad product marketing, in a statement. There are competitors out there, too. Seagate, for example, offers a 500GB Momentus XT hard disk with integrated flash memory for extra speed. And Toshiba is supplying the compact solid-state drives--what Apple calls "flash storage"--in the new MacBook Airs. Intel's SSD 310 is priced at $99 for the 40GB model and $179 for the 80GB version, both in 1,000-unit quantities.

0 Vote(s)

Faced with mounting legal bills, Julian Assange has agreed to a $1.5 million deal to write his autobiography."I don't want to write this book, but I have to," the controversial WikiLeaks founder told Britain's Sunday Times yesterday. "I have already spent 200,000 pounds ($307,400) for legal costs and I need to defend myself and to keep WikiLeaks afloat."Assange told the Times that he would receive $796,654 from Alfred A Knopf, his U.S. publisher. A deal with British publisher Canongate would bring in around 325,000 pounds ($501,000). And money from international markets and serialization of the book would bump up the total to at least $1.5 million.Currently out on bail in England, Assange is wanted for questioning by Swedish authorities over charges of sexual abuse, or "overraskningssex," as it's known in Sweden. Specifically, one Swedish woman claims Assange had sex with her after a condom broke, and another has accused him of having sex without a condom in the first place. The WikiLeaks founder has long maintained his innocence in the crimes. His supporters believe the charges have been trumped up as a way to silence him following outrage from the U.S. government over his publication of classified U.S. State Department and military documents.Assange is scheduled to appear in court again on January 11.

0 Vote(s)

Verizon calls on HTC to deliver another 4G first.(Credit:Gizmodo)When Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg take the stage January 6 for a CES keynote, it's expected that he'll show off a broad range of LTE products and services. Both the dual-core LG smarpthone and the Motorola Honeycomb tablet should make an appearance, and we also look for the 4G LTE-ready HTC Thunderbolt.Previously known by other code names (Mecha and Droid Incredible HD), the Thunderbolt will be the third 4G "first" from the manufacturer, following the Evo 4G (Sprint's first 4G phone) and the G2 (T-Mobile's first 4G handset). The Thunderbolt moniker makes sense as it conjures up imagery of Verizon's recent 4G LTE commercials, which show a guy harnessing a lightning bolt much like Zeus would. What's more, it would fall right in line with the carrier's new "Rule the Air" campaign. After making its initial appearance all the way back in August, the Thunderbolt hasn't remained the best kept secret. Normally a company might scramble to release the device or make an official announcement ahead of any leaks--too many leaks and rumors can lessen a device's impact--but it's possible that HTC has a different game plan for this smartphone.HTC itself appears to have leaked images of the device to various outlets, including AndroidCentral, Engadget, PhoneDog, and SlashGear. Each received different close-up photos of the device, teasing an overall bigger picture.Recently, Gizmodo was the first to post a picture of the phone running the Sense UI with a 4G LTE icon in the notification bar. The Thunderbolt is expected to feature a 4.3-inch touch screen, an 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, and a front-facing camera. Other rumored details include a kickstand (think EVO 4G), microSD card, and a 1GHz processor similar to the Desire HD and T-Mobile MyTouch 4G.In any case, check back January 6 to see what happens in Las vegas.

0 Vote(s)
