Dell said it will acquire Insite One, a developer of medical archiving cloud applications, for an undisclosed price.
The technology allows doctors to share medical images in the cloud. That means physicians can share medical images and make quick diagnoses by collaborating with other doctors online. Dell will combine Insite&'s archive product with Dell&'s own Unified Clinical Archive and DX Object Storage Platform. The platform simplifies storage of images through virtualization technology.
It may seem like a stretch for a computer maker to do this. But Dell is competing fiercely with rivals such as EMC and Hewlett-Packard to become a serious player in cloud and storage services. If the technology works as billed, it could lower costs and improve the quality of care for patients.
Based in Wallingford, Conn., InSite One manages a giant imaging database with more than 3.6 billion medical images. That&'s a lot of pictures of broken arms and whatnot. Medical image data is expected to grow 35 percent a year to nearly 2.6 million terabytes by 2014, according to market researcher Enterprise Storage Group.
