After the WD Caviar Green, Western Digital announced today a new green hard drive that also offers up to 3TB of storage, the WD AV-GP.
The company says that the new drive is designed specifically for audio and video applications, such as DVRs, Media Center PCs, and surveillance systems' will deliver 24-7 reliability' and uses less power thanks to WD's GreenPower Technology. According to WD, the AV-GP drives have been field-tested to have a 1-million-hour mean time between failures rating.
The new WD AV-GP drive has a SATA interface and comes in 2.5TB and 3TB capacities. Note that due to the 2.19 storage barrier it will not work well with legacy operating systems, such as Windows XP.
Other than that, the new drives will work in all applications where other 3.5-inch SATA hard drives are used. With low power consumption and relatively low performance, however, the WD AV-GP is best suited for audio- and video-serving purposes.
The WD AV-GP is available now and is slated to cost $160 for the 2.5 TB model (WD25EURS) and $180 for the 3TB model (WD30EURS).
